A flowsheet incorporating rotary-drum filtration for the solid-liquid separation step, followed by solvent extraction for uranium purification, is used as a standard against which four flowsheets are compared. These flowsheets employ either counter current decantation or belt filtration for solid-liquid separation, and either solvent extraction or continuous ion exchange plus solvent extraction for the purification step. Sales revenue, taxation, capital expenditure, and operating costs are estimated. These factors are taken into account in the calculation of an incremental net present value for each circuit by the discounting of cash flows at 25 per cent per year over a projected life of 15 years. For the material used in these examples, the highest net present value results from the circuit that employs belt filtration followed by continuous ion exchange and solvent extraction.

Shovel-truck systems for loading and hauling material in open pit mines are now routinely analysed using simulation models or off-the-shelf simulation software packages, which can be very expensive for once-off or occasional use. The simulation models invariably produce different estimations of fleet sizes due to their differing estimations of cycle time. No single model or package can accurately estimate the required fleet size because the fleet operating parameters are characteristically random and dynamic. In order to improve confidence in sizing the fleet for a mining project, at least two estimation models should be used. This paper demonstrates that the Machine Repair Model can be modified and used as a model for estimating truck fleet size in an open pit shovel-truck system. The modified Machine Repair Model is first applied to a virtual open pit mine case study. The results compare favourably to output from other estimation models using the same input parameters for the virtual mine. The modified Machine Repair Model is further applied to an existing open pit coal operation, the Kwagga Section of Optimum Colliery as a case study. Again the results confirm those obtained from the virtual mine case study. It is concluded that the Machine Repair Model can be an affordable model compared to off-the-shelf generic software because it is easily modelled in Microsoft Excel, a software platform that most mines already use. Gold has been demonstrated as a possible catalyst for oxidation reactions. Some evidence for a possible promotion effect of platinum has also been recorded. The influence of platinum as promoter for Au/?-Al2O3 prepared via anionic ion-exchange for the oxidation of glycerol was investigated in a batch reactor at 60°C. It is inferred that the addition of platinum reduces the catalytic activity and therate of deactivation, resulting in an overall higher final conversion of glycerol with increasing platinum loading. The addition of platinum to the catalyst favours the formation of the desired product, glyceric acid.

The paper describes how stress analyses were used to show the defect of a tunnel's shape on the overstressing potential of its periphery. The best profile was found to be that of a horizontal ellipse, for which there was little significant scaling, permitting temporary support to be incorporated into a permanent tunnel support system. This investigation was followed by the modeling of several support systems for tunnels with a horizontal-ellipse profile, which showed that such a profile can reduce the installed support required for a tunnel of different cross section by an average of 57 per cent.

Blasting is widely used in mining and basic construction because of its speed and economy to destroy the rocks. Blasting has the advantages of reduced excavation costs and shorted construction time when compared to the use of heavy machinery for excavation and cutting such as that with a tunnel boring machine. There are numerous problems with blasting, including the noise, vibration and fly rock. So it is necessary to accurately evaluate fracture mechanics of rocks on the dynamic loading condition to control the fracture process of the blasting. The tests using Hopkinson's effect for the dynamic condition using the precise detonators were performed for various strain rates on three different kinds of rocks. In the tests using Hopkinson's effect for the dynamic condition, the high-speed camera was used to observe the fracture process of the test sample rocks. As the results of experiments there was an increase in the tensile strength of rock with an increase in the strain rate for three kinds of rock on the dynamic loading. The tensile strength of rocks with high porosity on the water saturation condition was decreased on the both static and dynamic condition. It is clear that the strain rate and water saturation were influenced to the tensile strength of the rocks.

Some years ago, the authors developed an analysis of non-Newtonian pipe flow based on enhanced turbulent microscale and associated sublayer thickening. This analysis, which can be used for various rheologic modelling equations, has in the past been applied to smooth-walled pipes. The present paper extends the analysis to rough walls, using the popular Bingham plastic equation as a representative rheological behaviour in order to prepare friction-factor plots for comparison with measured results. The conditions for laminar-turbulent transition for both smooth and rough walls are also considered, and comparisons are made with earlier correlations and with experimental data.

"Blast furnace performance depends strongly on the coke reactivity index(CRI) and coke strength after reaction (CSR) properties. An innovative and cost-effective method, known as the Salem Box Test, has been developed to prevent the mass production of inferior coke unsuitable for blast furnace use. This method consists of coal carbonization on a micro-scale and involves charging approximately 18 kg of coal blend in a stainless steel box, carbonizing it together with coal cake in the plant coke ovens, and testing the coke produced for CRI and CSR to determine its suitability for blast furnace use. Only coal blends that yield coke with CRI <25% and CSR >64% are permitted for mass production, and other coal blends are either rejected or the blending ratios adjusted in an attempt to upgrade them. The experimental results reveal that, for a given coal blend, the quality of coke produced by the Salem Box Test is comparable with that produced by bulk production, indicating that the test is acceptable as a screening tool for regular use. The present paper describes the methodology and application of Salem Box Test to predict the suitability of coke for blast furnace use at JSW Steel Limited, Salem Works (JSWSL), and illustrates its advantages in adjusting the coal blending ratio to produce superior coke, in detecting coal contamination, and in preventing bulk production of inferior coke."

"The Lower Orebody at Chingola Division of Nchanga Consolidated Copper Mines, Limited, is a stratified orebody that is mined by a continuous caving system. The accurate determination of the developed and semi-developed ore reserves has always been difficult. The new system proposed in 1971 is designed to update and, as new informa¬tion becomes available, to account for the depletion of, the reserves.There are three main inputs to the system. These are borehole data, survey data and extractions data. The borehole data are input to a geological borehole master file system, which holds every recorded detail of a borehole in an easily extractable form. These data can be extracted for ore reserve calculations or for contour mapping of orebodies and rock types. The grades for use in the ore reserve calculations are extracted from the relevant boreholes.The survey data are information on the position of the blocks and drifts, taken from plans, and information on the scraper drift and trough drive positions taken from sections. The information is extracted from the plans and sections using a D Mac pencil follower. The ore reserve is calculated from the survey data and the borehole data.Data on extractions are taken from scraper operators&apos; logs, tramming records, skips hoisted records and accepted mill tonnages and grades. Using these data, the mill tonnages are reconciled back to the drifts, to deplete the current ore reserves.As new workings are brought into operation and further evaluation holes are drilled, the relevant data are input and the new developed ore reserve is calculated."

The Merensky Reef zone, as developed on Impala Platinum?s Rustenburg Operations, displays a gradational mineralized zone, with grades decreasing from the Merensky Pegmatoid Unit into the footwall and hanging wall. A system of identifying a manageable method of defining the mining cut is introduced, termed the grade profile attenuation cut-off grade. Although horizontal grade selectivity is not applied in the mining of the Merensky Reef zone, low extraction of the orebody, due to manageable and non-manageable factors, can contribute to a reduction in revenue, even losses, due to fixed cost contributions in the mining and beneficiation of the ore. A model is proposed that integrates all variables affecting the revenue of the mining operation, including the grade profile attenuation cut-off grade, the extraction factors, commodity prices and exchange rates, utilizing numerical simulation techniques in a PC-based environment. A breakeven extraction factor for a specific cut-off grade is delivered for a range of market conditions. The breakeven extraction factor is a useful guide when designing mining layouts in structurally complex and low metal content areas. Incorporating distribution functions for individual commodity prices and exchange rates into the model provides mineral resource managers with a risk profile for individual mining areas. Shaft areas have varying grade profiles and each area should have individual models run, to prevent generalizations being made about acceptable risk levels on mining areas.

Copper smelter dust (CSD) is a byproduct of copper smelting and is composed of considerable amounts of copper values and also contaminants (like silica and mullite). Silica in CSD forms Siloxane, a low density material, which is difficult to separate from the aqueous phase during solvent extraction. The need therefore arises to reduce/remove the aluminosilicates for better grade and recovery of copper in subsequent processes. This paper reports the use of two types of centrifugal gravity concentrators, namely Knelson (KGC) and Falcon (FGC), for upgrade of copper in CSD. The aim was achieved by an initial characterisation (Particle Size Distribution (PSD) and mineralogical analysis), together with Density Separation (DS) experimentation, premised on a hypothetical density difference between copper oxide and silicon/aluminum oxide. Wet screening results showed that 88.52 % of CSD particles were in -53 μm fraction. Further PSD study using laser diffraction showed the -53 μm fraction to be composed mainly of 26 μm, 22 μm and 18.5 μm fractions. Mineralogical analysis showed copper to occur mainly as oxides (24.34 wt%), but also as sulphides (7.95 wt%), and a substantial amount of aluminosilicates (42.97 wt%) were identified. Density of CSD was determined as 2.83 g/cm3. Copper content (18.02 wt%) in CSD was upgraded to 35.94 wt% in concentrate using KGC. In conclusion, the results showed good convergence between hypothesis and experiment. Additionally, it was also concluded that KGC performed better than FGC for copper upgrade in CSD. To achieve safe and healthy working conditions in shaft sinking operations, ventilation, and where necessary cooling, must be provided. These requirements are considered for sinking vertical, sub-vertical and decline shafts. Regulatory requirements, determining air volumes and amount of cooling required, the various ventilation methods used such as force, exhaust, twin columns, air reversal using four gate systems and the equipment required to achieve this, are discussed. Consideration is also given to the sinking of single and twin declines using diesel equipment, calculating the air volumes required to dilute pollutants and the various methods for achieving this. Also discussed is the importance of having early ventilation design input to the overall design of the mine. In many cases ventilation can be the prime determinant for the size and configuration of the shafts or declines that have to be sunk.

The peak in Sulphur price late 2008 caused again intensified investigation into the decomposition of sulphates and spend acid. One option is the recycling of sulphur from spend acid, which already started more than 40 years ago in the field of spend acid from organic processes in refineries and acrylic glass manufacturing. Since this acid couldn&apos;t be neutralized and discarded due to high organic contents, another source of SO2 to produce sulfuric acid is the decomposition of metal sulfates. The decomposition of metal sulfates was investigated at the next peak in Sulphur price in the 80?s. The first major scale pilot tests and studies of gypsum decomposition were carried out for clients in Florida. The decomposition of gypsum was quite often mainly influenced by the strategic decision of some countries to get own and independent acid production. In other cases the industry doesn?t have enough space to dump the gypsum. Therefore the company was also forced to convert the gypsum into ?saleable? products to avoid these residues. Other projects were made for the recycling of iron-sulfates from the pigment industry. The motivations for these projects were not only given by acid price. For the German pigment industry it was no longer permitted in the 80?s to dump the iron sulphate residues into the sea. These regulations forced the industry to develop new technology, which allows converting of the FeSO4-residues into iron oxide and acid. Therefore economical and mainly environmental factors influenced the decision of the companies to develop and to build these plants. Beside the above mention iron- and calcium-sulphates many other process exist, which produce metal sulphates as an intermediate product. These cases are not forced by environmental or strategic factors. In cases like Ni, Co or Mn-decomposition the main product of the plant is treated in the decomposition plant and later on used as ferrous-alloys. These final products are higher in price compared to e.g. CaO, which exclude the high-energy consumption for the endothermic chemical decomposition reaction. The reaction of SO2 generation based on acid or sulfate decomposition takes place in the range of 1000°C. The energy demand of the endothermic reaction is considerable and leads due to the high fuel-combustion off-gas stream to a diluted SO2 gas. Energy prices are usually increasing at the same time like sulphur. Sulphuric Acid based on decomposition is therefore more expensive than as acid based on sulphur combustion. The paper describes fluid bed technology and possible process concepts for decomposition plants. Additionally the thermodynamic background of the decomposition process and the main influence factors are provided to receive a better understanding of this technology.

"SynopsisCapital cost estimates are important in decisions on whether a project will be approved, mothballed, or abandoned. In South Africa, junior coal miners do not have extensive databases of historical projects from which to estimate capital costs. The purpose of this paper is to establish formulae that can be used for estimating capital costs of developing coal mines in a coal-producing country, using South Africa as a case study. The costs are estimated to an error of magnitude level of -30% to +50%, which is suitable for a concept study level, using a parametric estimation technique. The study uses data from completed coal mining projects from selected coal-producing countries. Three formulae are developed and presented for estimating capital costs of underground bord and pillar, surface shovel and truck, and dragline operations.IntroductionCapital cost estimates play a critical role in deciding whether projects will proceed, be delayed, or abandoned. It is therefore important that capital cost estimates are carried out accurately as determined by the estimation guidelines based on the level of estimation conducted (Shafiee and Topal, 2012). The lack of literature on estimation of capital costs in many coal mining countries is adversely affecting junior coal miners, since they do not have an extensive database of historical projects on which to base estimations. In South Africa, the difficulty in estimating capital costs is attributable to lack of publicly available data on completed South African mining projects (Hall, 2013)."

The modelling, simulation, and design of processes for the recovery of gold from solution by absorption on carbon require the combination of a suitable rate expression with a description of the flow conflguration of the system. By the use of a suitable rate expression from the literature, methods are presented for the design of multi-stage countercurrent absorption systems corresponding to the commonly used carbon-in-pulp and carbon-in-column contacting systems. The sensitivity of the recovery to various design parameters is illustrated. These results have important implications in the choice and design of equipment.

The research described considers whether the variability in coal material strength, as derived through a series of uniaxial compressive strength (UCS) tests, could be used to indicate the variability in coal pillar strength. The aim is to be able to use a distribution of UCS tests as input into the coal pillar strength calculation. This will allow the pillar design to be expressed in terms of a probability of failure rather than as the commonly used safety factor. To achieve this, the bulk strength factor associated with commonly used pillar strength formulae was replaced with a distribution of UCS results divided by an adjustment factor. The factor was determined so as to ensure that the resulting bulk strength does not deviate from the statistically determined bulk strength published in the original formulae. This approach enabled pillar strength distributions to be obtained using industry-accepted strength formulae, subsequently allowing for a probability of failure to be calculated for a specific pillar design. Using a regional coal material strength curve as a baseline, coalfields in which the coal is stronger than the regional mean can be identified and the pillar designs optimized. This is based on the stronger coals achieving lower probabilities of failure at similar safety factors. The research has considered actual UCS data from multiple mines in the Mpumalanga coalfields of South Africa, and has proved that the variability in material strength between coalfields could allow for some optimization using the proposed approach. Based on the data used in the study, a 2.78% increase in extraction could be achieved. However, further research will be required to validate the results of the study in an underground environment.

The rising tide of environmentalism has adversely affected many mineral producers, but it has also provided them with a number of opportunities for mineral applications. These markets are as diverse as water treatment, waste disposal, and flue-gas desulphurization. Whilst legislation is forcing up the industry&apos;s environmental standards, the advent of environmental management provides an opportunity for producers to display its &apos;green&apos; credentials. The picture painted of the extractive industry by environmentalists is undeservedly black, because the more efficient a producer is, the more effectively that producer conserves the very resources he exploits. The 1993 IM Forum examined these issues and how they affect the mineral producer, and this publication comprises the papers presented at that meeting.

Records over the past ten years indicate that there is potential for serious multiple accidents due to engulfing associated with rockpasses. Significant attention is not usually given to the design of rockpasses, with the implication that mistakes leading to poor performance of the passes are often repeated. This paper outlines general guidelines for the design, support, operation and rehabilitation of rockpasses based on information obtained from the limited amount of literature on the subject.
