Pipe-stick support in deep-level gold mines is first described and illustrated, a pipe-stick being a mine pole trimmed to the required size and sleeved by a pipe. An account is then given of an investigation into this form of support that involved load-compression tests in a 1000-ton press, tests in a rapid loading machine simulating rock-burst conditions, a study of the load-compression behaviour of pipesticks installed underground, and a cost evaluation. Pipe-stick support was found to be very effective on the face and to cost less than conventional matpacks.

The results of laboratory abrasive and abrasive-corrosive tests carried out on a range of carbon, Iowalloy, and stainless steels are compared with underground tests conducted on similar materials on prototype shaker conveyors carrying gold-bearing quartzitic rock. The dry-abrasion resistance of all the steels was found to be better than that of mild steel. When the added effect of corrosion was tested, the stainless steels proved to be much superior to proprietary abrasion-resistant alloys both in the laboratory and underground. The ferritic stainless grades were shown to be superior on the basis of cost per unit of volume lost. This investigation has shown that laboratory tests on materials can provide valuable information on their possible performance in situ, and can thus be used to replace lengthy experiments on site.

PREFACE During the past year, the Council of the SAIMM undertook a major strategic-planning exercise to review all its current activities, and to redefine its scope and objectives in the light of changing circumstances. The following are the four main concerns that prompted Council to take stock of the situation. (1) Over the past five years, the SAIMM has become heavily involved in a variety of new activities. (There are many examples, of which the expansion in book publications and the establishment of physical metallurgy as a third major discipline with its own colloquia and schools are perhaps the most important.) While these new activities have considerably broadened the SAIMM's scope, they have resulted in a significant increase in the day-to-day workload of the President, Office Bearers, and Council members, and of the secretarial staff based at Kelvin House.

Diamonds are mined from ancient raised beach deposits in southern Namibia where complex geological controls have resulted in patchy diamond distribution, largely related to irregularities (trapsites) in the bedrock. The distribution of the number of diamonds per sample is a discrete, reverse- J shape distribution which can be characterized by two parameters. These parameters have been transformed into a Beta and Theta Contribution which can be interpreted as reflecting the 'quantity' and 'quality' of the trapsites. The relationship of statistical parameters, obtained during the sampling of an ore deposit, to the geology of the deposit is an important element of ore reserve estimation. The large-scale regional trends in the contributions have been explained in terms of the geology.

All underground openings are three-dimensional, and in many cases it is not valid to analyse two-dimensional sections. This has been a problem in the past owing to the magnitude and complexity of three-dimensional stress analysis. In this paper a three-dimensional boundary element approach, using non-conforming quadratic elements, which is specifically applicable to underground excavations, is described. In addition, the philosophy of application of stress analyses is discussed. Three case histories are presented to demonstrate the practical nature of the approach as a tool in solving mining problems.

Gold Fields is the world?s fourth largest gold producer with operations in South Africa, Australia, Ghana and South America. All of Gold Fields? South African Operations are located in the Witwatersrand Basin and are intermediate to deep level underground mines exploiting gold bearing, shallow dipping tabular orebodies, which have collectively produced over 50 kt (1,608 Moz) of gold over a period of more than 100 years. Although the use of Monte Carlo as a business tool was introduced in 1964, it has only been in the last 30 years that it has gained increasing acceptance within the mining industry. However, the application thereof has been mostly limited to determination of risk in project areas. This paper however, considers the possibility of using Monte Carlo simulations to asses the underlying ?Root Cause? criteria critical to the operations management of existing mining operations. Currently, working operations have a distinct advantage over project areas as they have a wealth of historical information at hand. This, in turn, can be utilized to model distributions and relationships that can be used in Monte Carlo simulations, the results of which can be analysed to determine areas of concern. Projects can then be set up to ameliorate the effects of these and in turn reduce the risk of not achieving the operational targets. It is here that it must be stated emphatically that it should be the ?root causes? and the associated relationships that need to be emplaced within the model in order to achieve results that reflect the true causal relationship. The paper outlines possible sources of ?root cause? relationships and considers the outcomes of these in a case study on a large South African Gold Mine.

A method is proposed to estimate the gold content of the ore in the size intervals during size reduction. The method uses the population balance model to trace the gold deportment through the size fractions and monitor the generation of liberated gold grains during the size reduction. The model is calibrated using batch grinding test results of a gold ore. Irrational usage of mineral commodities leads to depletion of natural resources and various ecological violations in natural environment. Fulfilment of a number of measures and strategic decisions by given problems requires a correct forecast of trends of social-economic systems. For solving the task of long-term forecasting special procedures, considering Kondratyev’s big cycles of world conjuncture, have been embedded into algorithms of unknown parameters identification and recovering of factors of different countries mineral resources production and consumption models. In the paper the classification of long cycles types, existing forecasting algorithms on the basis of Kondratyev’s ‘long waves’ or ‘K-waves’ and the modified algorithm, developed by us, which allows to reduce time and financial expenses and to improve the forecast quality, are presented. Furthermore, the article includes several forecasts of mining branch corrected models factors, received by us, permitting complex prognosis of economic and social development of different scale and control level systems. In the paper workability of proposed forecasting algorithms on the base of ‘K-waves’ and adequacy of created models to researched processes are proved.

KCM made a major modification to the Nchanga Tailings Leach Plant (TLP) changing the circuit from feeding post leach thickeners in parallel with leach discharge for solid ?liquid separation to a Counter Current Decantation (CCD) configuration utilising most of the existing equipment. The new circuit is aimed at improving copper recovery from approximately 70% to 79% through enhanced wash efficiency. The re-introduction of CCD circuit at elevated throughput of 46 000-tpd design was made possible due to the EIMCO E-Duc technology design which is an auto-dilution system that enhances solids settling rate. Commissioning (manual operation) which accommodated on-going operational requirements was phased and completed in January 2004. The circuit stabilised in subsequent months and in March alone an all time record copper recovery of 81.8% was achieved which contributed an extra 779 tonnes copper above the plant?s projected production plans. 100% of the project cost was paid back by end of April 2004 This paper discusses the work involved and the challenges faced during the re-commission

Treatment of tailings is an integral component of mineral processing. Tailings with a high clay content are a challenge for the mineral processing industry; e.g. the clay slimes produced from production of phosphate in the mid-western United States and the fine tailings produced from oil sands production in western Canada. Dispersants are a commonly used process aid, but their impact on the structure and settling properties of high clay content tailings is not well understood. The paper describes the changes in composition and bitumen release that occur when mature fine tailings (MFT) are treated with a polymeric dispersant (lignosulfonate.) Synchrotron-source computed tomography (CT) was used to obtain high-resolution 3D images of samples prepared at varying dosages of dispersant. The CT method permits a powerful visualisation of the internal structure and composition of the samples. These insights will enhance our understanding of the structural characteristics of mineral tailings relevant to solid-liquid separation by flocculation and thickening. If an orebody has been drilled to achieve some level of regulatory compliance, then a number of associated geological databases will exist, representing 10 000 to 100 000 m plus of core intervals. The databases usually contain data about assays, lithology, mineralisation and geophysical attributes. They will also include location information such as collar positions and downhole surveys. Obviously this data is collected by geologists for, predominantly, geologists and mining engineers. However, from a process design viewpoint process engineers usually ignore the geology where possible and rely on a small number of metallurgical test samples. Typically these test samples are sourced from convenient and available cores or from a small number of specially drilled metallurgical holes. One of the worst instances known to the author was the design of a SAG mill using only two SAG specific test results (one for each of the major ore types) while, geologically, the orebody was defined by more than 30 000 m of drilling. This paper sets out a philosophy to maximise the use of the geological data, both for process design and in preparation for the commissioning phase of projects. Geological data is used in the identification of preferred locations for metallurgical test samples, for checking the metallurgical validity of the geological ore-type definitions, where necessary developing new ore-type definitions (geometallurgical domains) and developing mathematical relationships for the estimation of important metallurgical factors across the geological database. If the estimation of factors (for example ore competence) is considered reliable enough then there is also the possibility of feeding calculated data back into the block modelling process to allow the generation of metallurgically relevant outputs in the mine plans.

Backfilling is one of the options available to the mining engineer in mine design. The decision as to the type of backfill is dependent on the purpose for which it will be used. For example, in a situation where high-grade, steeply dipping multiple reefs are to be mined, the purpose would be the following: ? to facilitate maximum extraction; a ? to minimize loss of fines; ? to allow closely spaced multiple reefs to be mined; and a ? to create a working platform. The physical properties required which will satisfy the abovementioned requirements can then be defined; the design of the fill plant, as well as the transport of the fill, will be governed by these considerations. The same procedure is also adopted in deciding on backfill in single- reef gold mines. The first question to be asked is the purpose of the fill. It may be to reduce the energy release rate, for environmental reasons, to reduce timber usage, to improve productivity, to reduce stoping costs, to obtain higher mining extraction, and so on. Only after one, or a combination, of these factors has been selected, can the specifications for the fill be decided on, and the plant designed accordingly. The introduction of backfill at Sheba Gold Mine will be used to illustrate the procedure adopted by Anglovaal in determining the type of fill required.

Potgietersrust Platinums Ltd is Anglo Platinum?s only open pit operation and annually extracts 57 million tonnes of rock from 2 open pits. Over the past 3 years ~220 km of exploration drilling has been done, ~1000 km of rock face have been exposed for face mapping and over 7000 laboratory and field tests have been conducted. This has produced large amounts of geotechnical data to be utilised for feasibility studies, initial slope design and ongoing slope optimisation. It was necessary therefore to develop geotechnical databases to manage the vast amounts of data collected. SABLE and MineMapper 3D databases were created for logging and mapping respectively, with rock testing data incorporated into both. A pit inspections database was developed in MS Access and the existing groundwater and slope monitoring database was improved. The databases were linked to AutoCAD and Datamine to ensure that the latest geotechnical data is used for planning, draughting and modelling. The use of geotechnical databases ensures that no data is lost, standards are maintained and analysis can be easily performed. This increases the confidence of the analysis and allows the geotechnical engineers to optimise slope designs and blast designs on a regular basis. This reduces the risk of slope failure thus making the open pits more economical and safe.
