WeissThe reasons for failure of computer applications in the mineral industry and the direction of future developments.The Chairman opened the discussion by elaborating on the disappointment felt by some authorities with the lack of progress in the application of computers in the mineral industry during the last ten years, and posed the question to the panel : 'Do you agree that the computer age has not come up to expectations?'Mr Langton said that although there seemed to be a tremendous amount of brainpower applied to the theoretical side, he thought that the production men had not got all the help from computers that could have been given to them. The computer, said Prof Griffiths, is as yet a new tool which should not be used to do old things in old ways. To learn to use the computer will take time. After all, he said, it had taken 400 years after the introduction of the printing press to achieve general literacy, and perhaps it will take 40 years after the introduction of the computer to achieve `numeracy'.In Mr Weiss' view, the reason for the feeling of disappoint¬ment lay in the focussing of attention on the computer. The blame, if any, lay with the people surrounding the computer, that is, the analysts and programmers, to whom the emphasis should be shifted.Prof Hawkins said that he thought that some applications of the computer in the mineral industry had been successful, such as, for example, the compilation of payrolls. Reasons for failures in other areas were to be sought in the fact that the people connected with computers had failed to realise that they were merely part of a system. They had not understood the power structure of the organization which their work tended to change, and were therefore not prepared for the inevitable conflict with the production men.In Mr Splaine's view the production man had not received the assistance he could have had from the computer people because he may possibly not have allowed this to happen.Prof Bleksley concluded from these opinions that the promise which computers had ton years ago had not been fulfilled and added that the opinions expressed by the panel had intruded on his next question which was: 'Is the reason for this that people are involved?Prof Hawkins elaborated on his previous theme, namely, that of computer people in relation to management. Com-puter people, he said, were trying to impose change on management but were not prepared to share the responsibility for these changes. In fact, they wanted their work to be distinct and separate, and, as far as management was concerned, changes would be made when management believed that these would be less agonizing than no change at all."

INTERNATIONAL SOLVENT EXTRACTION CONFERENCE, 1971 The Society of Chemical Industry has agreed to sponsor an International Conference devoted to the science and technology of solvent extraction. This will be held in The Hague in the Netherlands during the week commencing 19th April, 1971. The organisation of the Conference will be in the hands of a Conference Committee under the chairmanship of Mr B. F. Warner. The emphasis of the Conference will be on technical solvent extraction of both inorganic and organic substances, including basic principles and practical applications. Sessions are envisaged covering the chemistry of solvent extraction, industrial processes and economics, the performance of contacting equipment and the underlying phenomena involved, and the response characteristics and control of such units. The Conference Committee will welcome offers of papers for presentation at the Conference. In the firts instance, intending authors should submit a preliminary title and an indication of the scope of their contribution to the Conference Secretary: Dr. C. Hanson, University of Bradford 7, U.K. It is hoped to have available in September a first circular giving further details of the Conference. SOUTH AFRICAN TUNNELLING CONFERENCE TO BE HELD IN 1970 A South African Tunnelling Conference, to be known as TUNCON 70, is to be held in Johannesburg during the latter half of July, 1970. South Africa, in common with other countries, has a vital and growing interest in tunnelling. Apart from the 800 kilometres of tunnel excavated annually in the gold mines, the 82 kilometre-long Orange-Fish Tunnel is being driven to carry water from the Orange River to the drier areas of the Eastern Cape Province. This and the realization that services such as water and transport are increasingly being carried underground in various parts of the world have emphasized the need for a forum at which the technology and potential of tunnelling can be discussed. TUNCON 70 is being supported by three professional engineering societies representing some 6,000 engineers, namely, the South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy, the South African Institute of Civil Engineers and the South African Institution of Mechanical Engineers, as well as by the Geological Society of South Africa. The conference has three main purposes. Firstly, to pool and exchange expertise by authorities on tunnelling; secondly, to discuss future developments in tunnelling technology with the aim of making those concerned with long-term planning aware of the potentialities of tunnelling; thirdly, to propose standards for tunnel shapes and sizes. Adoption of standards for tunnelling equipment and accessories would be a major step forward in improving tunnelling efficiency. The five themes of the conference will be: tunnel utilisation, exploration, design, construction and standards. The conference will be held at the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, from 21st to 24th July, 1970. For many years the concept of life cycle costing (LCC) was promoted for decision making in corrosion protection systems. Nevertheless, the application of LCC was limited. Input data was often sourced from suppliers and met with scepticism. As a result final analysis was often insufficiently rigorous to meet the needs of Project Managers in sound decision making. The need for expediency often resulted in non-optimal corrosion protection system specifications. With improved communications and the global reach of industries, case history data, based upon actual performance has been able to provide input to substantiate decision making. However, today?s focus upon sustainability whereby environmental, economic and even social aspects enter into decision making has extended LCC into Life Cost Analysis (LCA). In an LCA analysis energy and environmental inputs into systems are compared as part of an overall assessment. The development of Agenda 21 at the Rio summit of 1992 has challenged the countries of the world to look at sustainable development in every economic activity. This ranges from construction to mining to electricity production to automotive production, use and disposal. The protection of buildings, infrastructure and transport systems is part of the needs of sustainable development. Zinc based corrosion protection has been an important part of the arsenal of the corrosion protection industry. This paper will highlight the use of LCC and the development of LCA with reference to the use of zinc based protection systems in a number of important industries.

CIS countries are home to some of the world's largest producers of chrome, manganese and silicon ferro alloys and leading suppliers to world export markets. The region's ferro alloys production is rising faster than demand from its domestic steel industry - unit alloy consumption in domestic steelmaking is in fact falling as process efficiencies improve - and there is significant spare capacity available to increase production. CIS producers enjoy certain strategic advantages in the production of ferro alloys - for example, captive ore sup-plies, low power and labour costs - but must also meet certain challenges - such as lower labour productivity and greater distance to market than some of their competitors. CIS producers are ambitious but new investment is needed to upgrade some aging plants and overhaul outdated process technologies if they are to be more competitive with the world's leading producers and address the environmental issues that are now moving up the agenda. This paper describes the structure of the region's ferro alloys industry and discusses its advantages and disadvantages by alloy and by country. It considers how the ongoing process of restructuring and new investment in the industry might move forwards, based on its strengths and weaknesses, technical and environmental factors and the strategies of the main players. It asks how the industry might maximise its substantial potential - in particular, for the production of chrome and manganese ferro alloys - and examines the implications this holds for all global ferro alloys players.

When the slope angles of the southern side of the Venetia open pit were required to be flattened by some 20 degrees after an analysis completed by De Beers geotechnical engineering in conjunction with SRK, the additional waste stripping tonnage generated was in the order of some 70 million tons. The potential cost of having to move this tonnage had a significantly negative effect on the Net Present Value of Venetia Mine, challenging the viability of the third pushback and rendering a potential fourth pushback completely uneconomic. This paper details some of the innovation that went into the design and planning process undertaken to virtually negate the instantaneous effect of the flattened slope angles and the associated waste tonnage as well as further improve the NPV of Venetia Mine and bring the fourth pushback back into economic viability. This process has become known as NPV+ and is anon going exercise in waste reduction/deferment and revenue advancement.

The demand for stainless steel is ever-increasing. As an essential element in stainless steel-making process, so is the demand of chromite concentrate. At the same time, the industry proven technologies for beneficiation of chromite are limited. Chromite is only crushed, screened and jigged to produce a concentrate. However, for ultrafine and low-grade material, no satisfactory beneficiation methods for the enrichment of chromite fines exist in industrial operation. This poses a clear challenge for the industry, which Primetals Technologies has addressed with the development of a new beneficiation process. The aim of this process was to enrich low grade chromite tailings to a quality suitable for the smelting process. Required concentrate grades are different over the world, concentrate grades of Cr2O3=40% and lower are found at the Bushveld Complex, South Africa. The target for the present study was a Cr2O3-grade in the area of 49%. Three different chromite tailings with Cr2O3 grades between 16 % and 29 % were part of a study, executed by Primetals Technologies. All three tailing materials were characterised by Mineral Liberation Analysis (MLA). Based on the physical, chemical and mineralogical findings, process flowsheets were developed. The process flowsheets included grinding to ensure a full liberation of the chromite. The liberated material was classified at a cut size of 63 μm to a coarse and fine fraction. Gravity separation and flotation processes were tested with the coarse particle fraction. Due to the limitations of gravity separation with fine particles, only the flotation process is suitable and was tested with the fine fraction < 63 μm. A Design of Experiment (DoE) with six factors, each three levels, was conducted to identify optimal parameters for the fine chromite flotation. Two different collectors were tested: a phosphoric acid ester and a fatty acid type collector. In small scale test work a chromite concentration suitable for the smelting process was achieved. On this basis Primetals Technologies will develop a pilot-scale test program to research recirculation effects and upscale potential of the process. Anglo American Platinum has adopted a strategy of best practice principles (BPP) for sampling, mass measurement, analysis, and metal accounting for more than a decade now. When new plants are designed, the most suitable sampling equipment and sampling protocols are implemented and material flows and plant layouts are designed around sampling strategies. A few years ago, a crushing plant for a high-grade matte stream was commissioned. The design called for the high-grade material to be crushed to 95% passing 2 mm, and the design allowed for a single-cutter primary Vezin sampler taking increments from a gravity flowing stream at regular intervals while filling a tanker for pneumatic offload at the base metal refinery. This was a single point of sampling and analysis that would measure the wanted output from the smelting complex and the input to the refineries. In addition, the design incorporated the functionality to collect increments in an ?interleaved? fashion from the Vezin sampler for internal precision checks. The metal accounting strategy for Anglo Platinum involves the ongoing measurement of all inputs, outputs, and stock levels for all operations for platinum group metal (PGM) and base metal (BM) content. Included are yearly stocktakes, usually done on 1 February, across the smelters and refineries (at least the base metal refinery). In the accounting period immediately following the introduction of the new crushing and sampling facility, a trend was developing whereby the absolute difference between the physical stock and theoretical stock (PGMs predominantly) increased for the two respective sites on an ongoing basis. The smelter showed an increase in physical stock compared to the theoretical stock (sender) and the base metal refinery showed an increase in theoretical stock against physical stock. Because of this anomaly, an additional stocktake was held in September for the period in question, and it was confirmed through the physical stock measurement results that the PGM accounting problem was indeed pointing towards the evaluation of the high-grade matte stream. This paper showcases parts of the process that took place to explain the poor accountabilities for the two sites. Previous results from the sampler ratification process (of the interleaved sampling design) were reanalysed, a physical inspection was carried out on the sampling system again, and the sampler performance was monitored (quality control parameters) for the period. From these investigations, it was found that airflows inside the Vezin introduced the sampling bias. A change in sampling protocol was introduced, as well as certain physical changes to the sampling equipment, to eliminate the airflow and thus the bias conditions significantly. The accounting period that followed the phased upgrading process showed that the accounting between the smelter and base metal refinery had been restored to within statistical limits (difference between physical and theoretical stock below 5% relative to theoretical stock). Mixed integer programming (MIP) has been used for optimizing production schedules of mines since the 1960s and is recognized a shaving significant potential for optimizing production scheduling problems for both surface and underground mining. The major problem in long-term production scheduling for underground orebodies generally relate to the large number of variables needed to formulate a MIP model, which makes it too complex to solve. As the number of variables in the model increase, solution times are known to increase at an exponential rate. In many instances the more extensive use of MIP models has been limited due to excessive solution times.

The purpose of this paper is to develop an expert system for hydraulic excavator and truck selection in surface mining. Hydraulic excavators and trucks are finding increasing applications in mining operations. Hydraulic excavators are extensively used especially when bringing electricity to rural areas is difficult and for small-scale mining. This paper describes an expert system, which selects the optimum hydraulic excavator truck configuration such that unit production cost is minimized and technical constraints such as geological, geotechnical and mining constraints are satisfied. The system has four modules: user interface, rules and an methods, databases and output module. The expert system in this study is developed within KappaPC shell. It supports object-orientated technology for the MS Windows environment. The software provides a very useful tool to practitioners, saving time and cost. Equipment selection is a recurring and expensive problem of mine planning and often involves interdisciplinary experts from different fields. It is very difficult and expensive to bring together all these experts. The capabilities of the expert system developed are illustrated in the paper. The software overcomes the difficulties of selecting the proper equipment for surface mining operations, which is very important, and results in substantial savings. Equipment databases for hydraulic excavators with 15-59 yd3 capacities and trucks with 35-360 tons are constructed and these databases are used to select the proper configuration. The ConRoast process for the production of platinum group metals involves the use of a fluidized bed reactor for the removal of sulphur from ore concentrates by roasting prior to smelting in a DC-arc furnace. Test work was carried out in 2007 at Hazen Research in Golden, Colorado to provide the data necessary for a commercial roaster to be designed by Technip. This paper discusses the rationale behind the test work, the goals for calcine composition to be used as smelting furnace feed, the results of various roaster operating parameters in terms of calcine composition (particularly residual sulphur and the fate of trace elements), and the impact of the results in terms of a commercial roaster design.

Two detonation models, IDeX for ideal VOD and CPeX for non-ideal VOD, were used to predict the velocities of detonation (VOD) of five explosives: ANFO, a bulk emulsion, and three repumpable emulsions (R100 Gold, R100 Diamond, and R105). The theoretical VODs were compared with the in-hole VODs of the explosives, and the predicted and actual values were found to be within experimental error for ANFO and the bulk emulsion. The results were not consistent for the repumpable emulsions. The discrepancies can be explained as being due to variations in mining and loading practices. The results show that the detonation models can be effective tools in predicting the behaviour of explosives in different diameters and rock confinements, provided that the user is aware of the factors that can affect the optimal usage of explosives and equipment.

Recommendations are given for the design of multi-stage spray chambers in which air flows horizontally through water sprays. A detailed description is given of one such spray chamber at Hartebeestfontein gold mine that is used for bulk cooling of the incoming ventilation air, and that has been constructed according to these recommendations. A method for predicting the performance parameters of horizontal multi-stage spray chambers is given, and the method is illustrated with some examples. The method is equally applicable to spray chambers in which the water, rather than the air, is cooled.

The present study investigates the feasibility of using some materials as start-up slags for the extraction of magnesium metal from Egyptian dolomite ores by the Magnethermic technique. The reduction of roasted dolomite (dolime) takes place in a closed evacuated electric arc furnace (small Magnetherm reactor) using ferrosilicon as a reducing agent and liquid start-up slag as a reduction bath under an inert atmosphere. The operational parameters affecting the stabilization of the start-up slag composition and the extraction of magnesium such as reducing agent stoichiometry, reduction temperature, and time were investigated. The dolomitic charge was in the form of sintered briquettes. The charge was reduced under an argon atmosphere in the Magnetherm reactor for constant period and constant temperature. The results showed that the clinker can be used as a start-up slag for the magnethermic process. Also, the optimum conditions for the extraction process were found at 2XSi stoichiometry to give maximum reduction of 80% after 15 minutes reduction time at a temperature of 1550°C. XRD and XRF measurements were used to determine the phases present and the extent of reduction of magnesium, respectively. The South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy was approached by the Australian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy to present a paper on the current practice in terms of the valuation of mineral projects and properties, given the development of a Code for the Valuation of Mineral Properties, developed in Australia (the VALMIN Code), and a similar Code in Canada (the CIMVal Code).This paper is the result of research and investigation into the matter, in terms of the reporting of Mineral Resources and Reserves, financial reporting practice, the Listing Rules of the Johannesburg Securities Exchange, and various practices in valuation. The paper establishes that a strong linkage has already been established between the SAMREC Code for the reporting of Mineral Resources and Reserves and the Listing Rules, and that, for completeness, a Code for Valuation needs to be developed. This Code will be similar to its international counterparts, with the necessary inclusions which are relevant to South Africa, and will provide guidelines and definitions on matters such as transparency, materiality and competency in valuation. It proposes that a multi-stakeholder steering committee be established under the auspices of the SAIMM, to deliberate and design a process for establishing such a Code.

The complexity of commercial mining software has gained rapidly over the past decade as hardware developments have surpassed software capabilities at a staggering rate. Software users, recognizing the limitations of off-the-shelf applications, have adapted embedded scripting languages. Custom programming has always had a vital role in mine computing innovations, yielding a dynamic research environment in industry and academia. Fields such as industrial minerals can benefit from customization of existing software, since the majority of mine planning software was designed for large metal mines. Different customization approaches utilizing embedded scripting languages are presented, with examples of sand and gravel applications in development. Following implementation by Surpac and development of the Surpac Command Language, Tcl has been widely applied. Mintec introduced Python, also extensible and portable amongst various operating systems, for use in their MineSight products. In early 2000, Gemcom introduced the use of Microsoft Visual Basic for Applications, widely used customization tools for a decade. Datamine implemented a flexible multi-language approach, with all program commands and processes available through the COM Server Interface. This extends customization from the existing macro language to scripting in HTML, JavaScript, or any language that supports COM.

Probability-based empirical methods were employed as an alternative approach to predicting uncertainties associated with rock mass properties. The focus was on developing probabilistic spreadsheets to forecast rock mass classification indexes. Histograms were constructed to describe the best distribution in predicting rock mass properties. The developed models also offer utility in predicting the impact of discontinuities within the rock mass on rock strength and rock mass classification systems. Statistical analyses identified volumetric joint count, joint spacing, joint frequency, and rock strength as the most influential parameters. Moreover, the statistical analysis revealed varying degrees of correlation among different rock mass properties. While some properties demonstrated significant correlations suitable for modelling, others did not align well with any correlation model. The results highlight the need for a comprehensive approach to rock mass characterization, considering multiple factors beyond volumetric joint count. Geological complexities, including tectonic activity and weathering processes, may obscure direct correlations. These results emphasize the importance of empirical modelling and detailed site investigations for accurate assessment of rock mass quality and stability in the Himalaya.

Mintek and BacTech have joined forces to provide the metallurgical industry with bacterial-oxidation processes for the treatment of sulphide ores. The processes are aimed at both refractory gold-bearing and base-metal concentrates. Previously, BacTech had commercially implemented the refractory gold process at the Youanmi Gold Mine in Western Australia. More recently, the process has been incorporated in the Sulphide Treatment Plant at the Beaconsfield Gold Mine in Tasmania, Australia. In addition, Mintek and BacTech have recently signed an agreement with the Laizhou Gold Metallurgy Plant in China?s Shandong Province, which will see the third commercial realization of the technology for refractory gold. Development of the base-metal technology is the subject of several papers in the proceedings of this colloquium. The implementation of the refractory gold technology at Beaconsfield is discussed in detail. Some important aspects that are covered include: ?Test work, and the choice of bacterial culture ?Process design choices, and the advantages of the Mintek-BacTech process ?Inoculum build-up ?Plant commissioning ?Plant performance. Besides the Laizhou project, Mintek and BacTech are currently investigating several other commercial prospects for the technology. These include the use of the technology for a gold-copper deposit, where the production of both gold and copper is envisaged.

A frequency distribution model plays a fundamental role in ore evaluation, especially for the feasibility study of new deep gold mines. The geological complexity of the reefs being mined at present in the Witwatersrand basin poses some difficulties regarding the modeling of the underlying ore-value distribution. This geological complexity has given rise to a need for more applicable distributional models. This paper places the geology of the Witwatersrand basin in perspective and draws some important conclusions from the genesis of the deposition. In addition to the three-parameter lognormal model, two more-general distributional models are proposed. These are the compound lognormal (CLD) and log-generalized inverse Gaussian (LN-GIG) distributions. A detailed, although preliminary, comparative study of these two more-general models with the three-parameter lognormal model is described, and the efficiencies of the estimates and modeling are analysed. It is found that the broad assumption that gold grades follow a three-parameter lognormal law is not always the case, and the need to test for departures from log normality should be emphasized so as to ensure the use of appropriate models.

Over the last decade significant development and use has been made of a simulation model that describes the HCFeMn smelting operations in Assmang Ltd. This spreadsheet based, semi-empirical, predictive model is derived from data from the submerged arc furnaces at Assmang?s Cato Ridge, KwaZulu-Natal smelter site. Departures from the empirical base case mass balance due to changes in the ores, reductant feeds and operating parameters are accounted for by use of fundamental relationships and heuristic type ratios which are applied in an iterative manner in the model. The model performs a sequential set of calculations to iteratively converge on a fully consistent mass and energy balance solution, which predicts Mn alloy and slag output masses and compositions for a given set of feeds. 440 MWh per operating day is used as the basis of energy input. The paper describes the key model components, assumptions made and calculation approach. Added to the mass and energy balance is a cost and revenue balance, which allows prediction of the economic performance for each simulation. Substantial use of the model has been made in simulating the performance of the current Assmang HCFeMn furnaces for both smelter investigations and future production planning. The model has also been a valuable tool in the strategic analysis of the use of future Mn ores and has formed the vital link between mine ore grades (metal and slag elements) and the expected alloy output, grade and profitability. Additionally, the model has been used in benchmarking exercises to predict other Mn smelting operations with remarkable accuracy. The paper highlights some aspects of the approaches taken in using the model to benchmark Assmang?s own furnace performance and cost competitiveness with other producers. For Assmang the development and application of this modelling technology has led to transformation in understanding of the Assmang HCFeMn furnace operations and increased awareness of the potential of its Mn ore bodies.
