An analytical framework is formulated to assist mining companies in assessing the relative merits of mineral exploration and acquisition strategies. The anticipated costs, risks, and returns of each strategy are conceptualised using decision trees. Economic criteria - expected net present value, expected return per unit of investment, and the probability of success - for each strategy are derived(from the appropriate decision tree network. Application of the analytical framework is illustrated using the example of a medium-size company in the Canadian base metal sector.

Palabora Mining Company operates a low grade underground copper mine situated in the Limpopo Province, South Africa. Full production was first reached in May 2005 after a successful transition from an open pit operation to an underground block cave operation. The operation faces a number of technical and operational challenges, not the least being fragmentation of a competent rock mass and external dilution. The cave is subdivided into three main sectors being the east, the west and the central sectors. Caving was initiated from the weaker central sector, which has the majority of its drawpoints located directly under the open pit bottom currently filled with about 130 million tons of waste material from the pit wall failure incurred in 2004. About 48% of the ore reserve has to be extracted from the western sector, which has a much courser fragmentation compared to the other two sectors and only 25% from the central sector with the finest fragmentation. The main constraint during the ramp-up stage has been secondary breaking of drawpoint blockages. Ground-breaking secondary breaking and cave management initiatives and practices have made it possible for Palabora to realize and sustain high production rates.

IRUP is an iron-rich ultramafic pegmatite rock that formed due to hot ironrich fluids and gases replacing local stratigraphic zones of the Bushveld Complex. This study focuses on the estimation of the probability of IRUP occurrence on the Merensky Reef at the Marikana Karee Mine. A 2.15 million centare IRUP-rich domain at the Karee Mine was initially defined from the interpretation of a surface aeromagnetic anomaly, and exposures in the mine workings. Surface boreholes (spaced 250-500 m apart) within this IRUP domain contain approximately equal numbers of IRUP-replaced and IRUP-free intersections. Owing to the uncertainty in the continuity of the IRUP alteration (a result of the wide borehole spacing), the risk associated with the development of mining infrastructure within this domain is unquantifiable. Semi-quantitative data comprising visual estimates of IRUP replacement from reef development mapping data and surface borehole reef intersections was interpolated into blocks using indicator kriging estimation. Comparative analyses of the estimate of IRUP occurrences were made by changing the block size and declustering the data systematically. Reconciliations of the probability of IRUP predicted from the block models derived from the different data-sets and sequential indicator simulation models were analysed for four mining study blocks. A quantitative approach to modelling the occurrence of IRUP can be an additional tool for refining the estimate of the geological losses that inform the mine plan in such high-risk zones.

In some underground hard-rock mines, squeezing compressive ground conditions are influenced by the presence of rock foliation and high stress. In these cases, the orientation of the foliation with respect to the drift direction has a considerable impact on the magnitude of the resulting deformation. Irrespective of the reinforcement and support strategy, keeping drives developed sub-parallel to the rock foliation operational is difficult, and often requires excessive rehabilitation during the lifetime of the excavation. This study uses field observations and convergence measurements at the LaRonde and Lapa mines of Agnico Eagle Mines Ltd to provide guidelines of the anticipated squeezing levels at these operations.

Casting, cooling and crushing/sieving of ferroalloys has followed a well-established pattern in the whole ferroalloys industry for many years. Usually liquid metal or alloys are cast into flat open moulds of various shapes and forms, and after solidification the product is removed from such mould to further cool down to a temperature where subsequent handling steps are feasible. Common to all mechanical product fractioning is the generation of dust and fine size material with lower product value. For almost 10 years, Bécancour Silicon has investigated alternative roads to improve technology and/or reduce or solve problems related to those disadvantages. Since 1995 Bécancour Silicon operates a special silicon granulation plant targeted to product for the chemical treatment/conversion of silicon for silicones production. Prior to the development of the granulation process, various systems had been evaluated, among others the vibrating casting bed, now in operation elsewhere but judged inappropriate because of the tapping volumes to be handled at Bécancour Silicon and other disadvantages. After evaluation of all aspects of heat transfer, radiation, and conductivity in relation to transfer media and within the product, a novel system was designed and built.

The use of plastics in the coal mining industry is making slow progress whereas these materials could make a greater contribution to safety, to a reduction of working costs and to the higher productivity of mine workers. Possibly the reluctance to experiment with the new material of our age is due to the low profit margin of coal mining. This note has been prepared to present a brief survey of what has been done in the last few years and to mention some of the investigations the author has made and is making in an attempt to develop more use of plastics in the industry. Some of the plastics used on the mines have taken their place in the industry in the same manner that they are used in everyday life while others have been introduced because there has been a need for them. New uses and applications are being developed and these are the ones that are most interesting. The plastic that is specially developed to give the maximum benefit and not the one that is a modification of some other everyday product is the next development in the field. Many manufacturers are keen to promote such investigation but are not aware of the problems the mines wish to solve and therefore it is only through management itself that this development can be carried out. This note deals with plastic material under three headings: (a) Plastic as the superior material, and briefly describes how plastic has replaced a few major items which are better when made from plastic. (b) Plastics of necessity, being a short summary of how plastics had to be introduced because of laws and conditions making it a necessity. (c) Development of new ideas, being briefly some of the ideas being developed overseas and some of the ideas being tried by the author. Plastic items in common use such as in housing, electric cables, laboratory equipment, awnings, nylon bearings, locomotive brake linings, etc. being well known are not discussed. PLASTIC AS THE SUPERIOR MATERIAL Plastic belting underground Following a fire in a belt road in England resulting in the deaths of many workers, and subsequently a fire accompanied by fatalities in a belt road in a mine in this country, a law was introduced which states that only flameproof belting is to be used underground. This ruling forced the mines to use P.V.A. belting as no other was available. This belting has non-inflammable characteristics that are superior to rubber. Due to the high tension on long-distance belts used today the need for stronger belting material called for something better than cotton and the answer to this was nylon. Nylon also has the ability to withstand dry-rot which reduces the life of a belt very quickly.

This study investigates the feasibility of using waste iron slag, the by-product from a mineral sands processing works, in road construction. The study includes the different options investigated for the treatment of a leachate that is produced during the cooling of the iron slag, prior to processing. It also reviews the reasons for choosing the current treatment option that is being trialed. Cooling the iron slag with water results in the formation of a leachate with a high pH and high sulphide concentration. This leachate can seep into the ground and, over time, it will contaminate the ground water. A system was designed to collect and treat the leachate to prevent contamination of surrounding natural water sources. Numerous leachate treatment options were investigated to find cost effective method of treatment After cooling, the iron slag is passed through an iron recovery plant and the unsaleable product is placed on a dumpsite. Rain percolates through the dumpsite, which can result in the formation of a leachate that can contribute to a contaminated plume. After extensive testwork, it was found that the dumpsite, which was leached of contaminants, could be screened and used as a G5material (specifications in Table II) in road construction. The initial challenge was to establish that this material was environmentally safe for use in this particular application. Approval from the Department of Water Affairs (DWAF) was required for the testwork and then for the long-term use of this material in the construction industry. The following challenge involved establishing a market for the material. Construction companies in the area were reluctant to change to a new product that was not naturally occurring. The economics of this project are extremely sensitive to transport costs and hence only projects within a specified radius can be supplied with the Black Top Gravel (BTG). This project is not are venue generator, but it does save the money that would be required to manage the dump, and it reduces the closure costs.

Rock engineering risk is defined in this paper as a function of the potential ground motion; the vulnerability of the workplace; exposure of people; and a general term – quality of information. The paper describes the development of prototype software that is a combination between an expert system approach for determining overall risk assessment, a risk control recommendation and a basic GIS (Graphic Information System) approach for graphically overlying input parameters and the output risk. The expert system uses a Bayesian probabilistic approach to combine various workplace-related information, a quantified seismological environment and the exposure of underground staff to provide an overall RE risk rating. The risk assessment is dynamic in that it is recalculated each time that any of the input parameters change, for example each time a seismic event is recorded in the area of interest. The code was tested on a data set from Savuka Gold. As risk assessment is not an absolute prediction of a specific outcome, it is therefore not possible to relate to individual case studies and the reliability of this method would only be determined after an extensive period of use with appropiate back-analysis. Le risque dans le génie minier est défini dans cette étude comme une fonction du mouvement potentiel de terrain ; la vulnérabilité du lieu de travail ; l’exposition des personnes ; et un terme général – la qualité de l’information. L’étude présente décrit le développement d’un logiciel prototype qui est une combinaison entre une démarche de système expert pour déterminer une évaluation générale du risque, une recommandation pour le contrôle du risque, et une démarche de SIG (Système d’Information Géographique) pour superposer graphiquement les paramètres d’entrée et le risque de sortie. Le système expert utilise une méthode de probabilité bayésienne pour combiner des informations variées sur le lieu de travail, des données quantifiées sur l’environnement sismique, et l’exposition du personnel travaillant sous terre, pour finalement produire un classement général de risque minier (RE). L’évaluation du risque est dynamique en ce sens qu’elle est recalculée à chaque fois qu’un des paramètres d’entrée change, par exemple à chaque fois qu’un évènement sismique est enregistré dans la région. Le code fut testé sur un ensemble de données obtenues de Savuka Gold. Comme l’évaluation du risque ne constitue pas une prédiction absolue d’un résultat spécifique, elle est par conséquent difficile à rattacher à des cas individuels et la validité de cette méthode ne pourrait être déterminée qu’après une longue période d’utilisation avec analyse rétrospective appropriée. Das Papier beschreibt die Entwicklung einer Prototyp-Software, die eine Kombination zwischen einem Expertensystemzugang für die Bestimmung der gesamten Risikobeurteilung ist, eine Empfehlung zur Risikokontrolle und eines fundamentalen GIS (graphisches Informationssystem) Zuganges für graphisch darüberliegende Eingangsparameter und das Outputrisiko. Das Expertensystem verwendet eine bayesische Wahrscheinlichkeitsannäherung, um verschiedene mit dem Arbeitsplatz in Verbindung stehende Informationen, ein quantitativ bestimmtes seismologisches Umfeld und das Ausgesetztsein des Untertag-Personals zu kombinieren, um eine gesamte RE-Risikobewertung zur Verfügung zu stellen. Die Risikobeurteilung ist insoferne dynamisch,daß sie stets nachkalkuliert wird wenn sich irgendeiner der Eingangsparameter ändert, z.B. jedesmal wenn ein seismischer Fall im Interessensbereich aufgezeichnet wird. Der Code wurde auf einem Datenbestand von Savuka Gold geprüft. Da die Risikobeurteilung nicht eine absolute Vorhersage eines spezifischen Resultates ist, es ist folglich nicht möglich, sich auf einzelne Fallstudien zu beziehen und die Zuverlässigkeit dieser Methode könnte nur nach einer umfangreichen Benutzungsdauer mit geeigneter Postanalyse bestimmt werden.

Growing use of deionised water in surface coating techniques by w. F. LORCH Production engineers in the metal plating, paint, plastics-coating and printed circuit industries are increasingly aware of the cost of sub-standard or blemished items which have been poorly processed. An area where quality control can quickly produce higher efficiencies is in the choice of suitably purified water for making up solutions, for rinse baths and 'drag-out' baths, for cleansing lines and electrophoresis tasks, for maintaining electrolyte density and hence consistency, and for facilitating the recovery of valuable minerals. The author of this article examines the general problems of using nonpurified water, and shows how purified water has become accepted by the principal surface coating industries to improve processes and effect economies.

"Underground mining is subject to various natural hazards such as seismic events, rockbursts, fire, and gas (methane). In general, an increase in the extraction depth causes an increase in the likelihood of these hazards, especially seismic activity and rockbursts. Dynamic phenomena such as rockbursts and tremors have been recorded on six continents: Europe (Poland, Russia, Czech Republic, Germany, and Slovenia), Asia (India, and China), North and South America (USA, Canada, and Chile), Africa (South Africa), and Australia. To select appropriate mine working supports for such dynamic phenomena, the performance characteristics of such support types must be determined under both static and dynamic load conditions.This article presents information regarding the application of rockbolts in Polish underground hard-coal mines. Dynamic phenomena occurring in the mines from 2004–2013 are also characterized. A methodology developed at the Central Mining Institute (GIG) for the laboratory testing of rockbolts is presented. In this methodology, the bolts are loaded by the direct impact of a free-moving mass (up to 20 000 kg) at speeds of up to 1.2 m/s. The facilities at GIG used to test the support under static and dynamic load conditions are characterized, and the results of laboratory tests on yielding bolts with a nominal capacity of 420 kN are presented. These types of bolts are commonly used for reinforcing steel arches and the surrounding rock mass in Polish coal mines. The results of the laboratory testing of yielding bolts are discussed.IntroductionSeismic events such as rock bumps and tremors occur with great frequency during underground mining. These phenomena have been reported in such countries as Poland, Czech Republic, Germany, France, Slovenia, Russia, India, China, the USA, Canada, Chile, South Africa, and Australia (Brauner, 1991; Potvin, Hudyma, and Jewell, 2000; Kidybin??ski, 2003; Driad-Lebeau et al., 2005; Li, Cai, and Cai, 2007; Whyatt and Loken, 2009; Durrheim and Riemer, 2012; Holub, Rušajova, and Holec?ko, 2011). Descriptions of the dynamic events and their effects in the form of damage to or destruction of supports have been presented in many publications, both for hardrock mines as well as for coal mines (Brauner, 1991; Dubin??ski and Konopko, 2000; Heal, 2010; Heal and Potvin, 2007; Simser, Joughin, and Ortlepp, 2002; Kaiser and Cai, 2012; Cai 2013; Nierobisz, 2013; Mark, 2014; Masny and Prusek, 2015). One of the main goals of the research has been to develop methods, criteria, and guidelines for the selection of an optimal and safe support for mine workings located in areas of rock bumps or tremors. Example of such studies include the Canadian Rockburst Support Handbook (Kaiser, McCreath, and Tannant, 1996), or the principles presented in the literature (Li, 2010; Cai, 2013)."

Wet stirred media milling is a widely applied grinding process in the field of mineral processing to produce <10 μm ground materials. In this paper, the results of wet stirred media milling of different Ti, Fe and Cu-oxide and phosphate minerals are presented. During the experimental work, grinding of ilmenite, vivianite, hematite and cuprite was carried out in a continuous operation wet stirred media mill. During the experiments, the particle size distribution and specific surface area of the ground materials were determined after a certain grinding time, as well as measuring the specific grinding energy, thereby determining the grinding kinetics of the different minerals. The measurement results showed the differences and similarities in the grindability of the individual minerals. Nano particulate vivianite, hematite and ilmenite was successfully manufactured in a stirred media mill; however cuprite was characterised as the coarsest final product for the same grinding circumstances. Several Rockmass classification systems have been developed and used in Civil Engineering design and for underground mining operations. Some of these rockmass classification systems have been modified and used in the South African coal mining industry to quantify descriptive geological information for use in coal mine design and roof support selection. The Coal Mine Roof Rating (CMRR) system developed in the USA has been investigated in detail as part of the study. Advantages and disadvantages of the system have been identified by means of underground and surface borehole testing. Investigations into the rating systems in South Africa found that most of the rating systems used in the South African coal mining industry are for planning purposes, and are conducted on borehole cores. This study also highlighted that the rating systems being used are based on geology, and that the human factor plays a major role in the rating systems. To overcome these problems, all the classification systems used in South African coal mines have been benchmarked against impact splitting technique and documented. The best elements of these systems are combined into a new standard system that will be easily used by all mine geologists and rock mechanics engineers. Plusieurs systèmes de classification de la masse rocheuse ont été développés et utilisés dans le Génie Civil et pour les opérations d&apos;exploitation minière souterraine. Certains de ces systèmes de classification de la masse rocheuse ont été modifiés et utilisés dans l&apos;industrie minière sud-africaine pour quantifier l&apos;information géologique descriptive utilisée dans la conception de mines de charbon et la sélection de soutènement du toit. Le système d&apos;Evaluation de Toit de Mine de Charbon (CMRR) développé aux USA a été examiné en détail, comme part de l&apos;étude présente. Tests en surface de trous de mine ont permis d&apos;identifier les avantages et inconvénients du système. Une étude des systèmes d&apos;évaluation en Afrique du Sud a révélé que la plupart des systèmes d&apos;évaluation utilisés dans l&apos;industrie minière sud-africaine sont utilisés pour la planification, et sont menés sur les carottes de trous de mine. L&apos;étude présente a aussi souligné que les systèmes d&apos;évaluation utilisés sont basés sur la géologie, et que le facteur humain joue un rôle majeur dans les systèmes d&apos;évaluation. Pour surmonter ces problèmes, tous les systèmes de classification utilisés en Afrique du Sud ont été référencés en termes de technique de fissuration sur choc, et documentés. Les meilleurs éléments de ces systèmes sont combinés dans un nouveau système standard qui sera utilisé aisément par tous les géologues de mine et les ingénieurs miniers. Das in den USA entwickelte Kohlengrubenfirstbewertungssystem (CMRR) wurde als Teil der Studie im Detail untersucht. Vorteile und Nachteile des Systems sind mittels der Untergrund- und Oberflächenbohrlochprüfung gekennzeichnet worden. Prüfungen der Bewertungssysteme in Südafrika ergaben, daß die meisten Bewertungssysteme die in der südafrikanischen Kohlebergbauindustrie benutzt werden, Planungszwecken dienen und werden anhand von Bohrlochkernen durchgeführt. Diese Studie hob auch hervor, daß die verwendeten Bewertungssysteme auf Geologie basieren und daß der menschliche Faktor eine Hauptrolle in den Bewertungssystemen spielt. Um diese Probleme zu überwinden, wurden alle in südafrikanischen Kohlengruben benutzte Klassifizierungssysteme vergleichsweise in Hinblick auf Spaltschlagtechnik überprüft und dokumentiert. Die besten Elemente dieser Systeme werden in ein neues Standardsystem kombiniert, das leicht von allen Grubengeologen und von Gebirgsmechanikingenieuren benutzt werden kann.

Bateman, like other engineering contractors, carries out or participates in many studies of potential projects in the Minerals Industry. This paper aims to explain the contracting approach to feasibility studies as practiced by Bateman, particularly where this differs from a traditional mining company approach. A brief description is provided of the usual phases of a project and the types of estimate needed to proceed from one phase to the next. Possible organizational structures involving different forms of association between owner, contractor and consultants are then outlined. The bulk of the paper then demonstrates that the cost estimates prepared stem directly from the mining plan, metallurgical process design and engineering design philosophy. The steps to be followed in order to prepare a credible estimate which accurately reflects the design constraints are described. The importance and the methodology of carrying out value engineering and of preparing contingency estimates based on a thorough risk analysis exercise are then discussed. Financial modelling techniques are described briefly. The paper concludes with short summary case studies of two recent investigations of potential projects in Africa.

"Kell is a hydrometallurgical treatment option for the recovery of platinum group metals (PGMs), gold, silver, and base metals from flotation concentrates to refined products on site. The process is cyanidefree, while eliminating emissions of sulphur dioxide, arsenic trioxide, and other toxic species often emitted by smelters and roasters. Kell has been tested on a range of concentrates, including PGMs (UG2, Merensky, Platreef, Great Dyke, Great Lakes, Lake Superior and others), refractory gold-silver, coppergold, and polymetallic concentrates. High extraction efficiencies (>95%) are achieved for value metals (Pt, Pd, Rh, Au, Ag, Ni, Cu, Co) and secondary metals (Sb, Zn, Pb, and others). Studies comparing Kell with smelter-refining show economic benefits: capex 18–33% of smelting; opex 51–66%; electricity consumption 13–46%; and environmental benefits: greenhouse gas emissions 57–61% of smelting, acidification 5–27%, human toxicity 37–62%, and freshwater ecotoxicity 43–55% of smelting. Synergies for Kell plants alongside smelter-refineries include utilization of recovered acid from sulphur abatement systems and excess capacity in precious metal refineries. Kell is unconstrained by concentrate grade and impurities, allowing the co-location of Kell plants for treatment of non-smeltable concentrates alongside existing smelters.Kell has been demonstrated in a nine-week integrated pilot campaign at 1:1000 scale, supporting a bankable feasibility study for a 110 000 t/a plant treating a UG2-Merensky concentrate at Pilanesberg Platinum Mine (PPM), owned by Sedibelo Platinum Ltd, which has along with South African Industrial Development Corporation (IDC), invested in Kell. Zimbabwean Mining Development Corporation (ZMDC) has signed a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) with KellTech for a centralized PGM concentrate processing plant."

Oxides of sulphur are corrosive and are produced when sulphur-containing fuels are burned. Sulphur dioxide (SO2) is a colourless gas with a characteristic, irritating, pungent odour. Exposure routes to the human body are mainly through inhalation and skin and/or eye contact. Symptoms of exposure to SO2 may include irritation of the eyes, nose, and throat; rhinorrhea (discharge of thin nasal mucous); choking; cough; and reflex bronchoconstriction. To protect employees against the ill health effects of SO2 exposure, they are often required to make use of respiratory protection whenever entering areas were the SO2 levels exceed the statutory limits. The use of respiratory protective equipment should always be a last resort and should be considered only after other control measures have failed to reduce occupational exposure levels to below the occupational exposure limit or whilst other control measures are being investigated or implemented. Whenever the use of respiratory protection equipment is considered, it should always be used as part of a comprehensive respiratory protection plan. It is also extremely important that all potentially exposed persons are adequately and comprehensively informed and trained.

The sequential flotation of copper, lead, and zinc in that order is practised at the Broken Hill Concentrator of the Black Mountain Mineral Development Company (Pty) Limited. The minerals of economic importance are chalcopyrite, galena, and sphalerite, with associated silver. The targets for recovery and grade in the lead and zinc circuits were reached quite readily after start-up, but the copper circuit failed to meet the performance requirements with respect to both recovery&apos; and grade. The original circuit for copper is described, together with the subsequent investigations and modifications that were required to produce acceptable metallurgical results. Circuits for semi-bulk and bulk flotation were tried, and the effect of the oxidation state of the pulp was investigated extensively and found to be all important. Tests were conducted on the depression of lead in the cleaning circuit by the use of sodium dichromate, and on heating with the addition of sulphurous acid. The latter technique was ultimately the more successful. The proportion of fresh to recycle water entering the circuit was shown to be important. The original reagent regime was altered and augmented. A more recent problem has been the contamination of the ore with cemented backfill. The changes that this new condition necessitated are described. Success has been measured by a continuous improvement in the economics of the copper recovery.

This paper presents the results of a study focussed on determining the distribution of cobalt in different types of pyrite of the La Estrella IOCG deposit in Chile. In the IOCG mineral deposits, where copper is the main product, the quantification and distribution of cobalt is required to correctly define the technical and economic viability of recovering cobalt as a by-product. In the La Estrella mineral deposit, seven alteration and mineralisation events were recognised through both optical and automated electronic mineralogical analysis. Of these seven events, five different types of pyrites were identified, each with unique characteristics of the pyrite crystals. Through advanced elemental analysis of these five types of pyrites, it was determined that the concentration and distribution of cobalt within the pyrite crystal is dependent on the mineralisation event. The results indicate high cobalt concentrations in the early pyrite mineralisation events, associated with relatively fine pyrite grains, and cobalt generally occurring in a solid form in the pyrite core. The late pyrite mineralisation event exhibits the lowest concentrations of cobalt, with cobalt predominantly present along the outer periphery of the pyrite. These results are relevant from a metallurgical point of view because the preferential location of cobalt within the pyrite crystal will influence the maximum metallurgical recovery of cobalt. For this, a cobaltiferous pyrite concentrate must be formed which, according to the characteristics of pyrite, must be processed with the optimal solubilisation method. The overall objective is to ensure both good cobalt recovery and a high concentration of cobalt in the leach solution resulting from pyrite leaching. Strategic mine planning is concerned with the decisions that determine the value of the business, while tactical planning deals with the tasks to realize that value. When tasked with formulating a strategic mine plan, the mining engineer often turns to commercially available software. However, these software packages have limited applicability to the RBM situation. Adopting a simpler, back to basics approach founded on a deep understanding of the economics of the orebody has the advantage of providing a clear logic to guide tactical planning. By creating a coherency between strategic mine planning, and tactical planning the likelihood of successfully executing the plans and attaining the value promised by the strategic plan is increased. This paper describes the reasons why RBM embarked on a strategic mine planning process, the rationale of choosing the process, and the process itself.
