The effect of body movement on convective heat transfer from a man performing a block-stepping task was investigated experimentally by direct measurements of convective heat transfer. A series of experiments was conducted in which a nude man was required to stand at rest or to block step at 12 and 24 steps per minute. Wind speed, which was kept constant during each experiment, spanned the range 0,5 to 3,5 m/so Air temperature was kept constant at 43 °C in all the experiments. The results showed conclusively that the convective heat-transfer coefficient depends on the stepping rate. The effect of body motion can be regarded as being equivalent to an increase in the velocity of the free stream. The equivalent increase in air speed was found to be 0,36 and 0,77 m/s for 12 and 24 steps per minute respectively. Data from various sources, including the present study, indicate that wind speed should be increased by about 0,30,0,55, and 0,80 m/s to account for low, moderate, and vigorous body movements respectively. These findings are of direct relevance to the practical assessment of heat stress.

The size distribution and morphology of gold particles in Witwatersrand reefs and their crushed products by D. K. HALLBAUER, Dr. rer. nat., Dipl. Min. (Visitor) and N. C. JOUGHIN, B.Se. (Eng.), Ph.D. (Rand) (Member) Undistorted gold particles were obtained from samples of a variety of Witwatersrand reefs by dissolution of the quartz in hydrofluoric acid. The size distribution of the gold particles and their shapes and association with thucholite and pyrite are discussed. Gold particles with a natural flat, plate-like appearance occur in varying proportion in all reefs. The effect of a number of different comminution processes on the gold particles was investigated, and the shape of gold particles in mill pulp from a number of mines was examined.

The most important event in the Institute's recent history is the strategic plan, which was drawn up in 1986 during Henry James's term of office. This plan was formulated at a workshop attended by most of the senior members of Council, and from it has flowed a number of changes that have been introduced over the past four years.

Wolhuter entitled, 'Utilisation of slags for the manufacture of cement.' After the presentation of the paper the President said: "Thank you, Professor Howat, for so ably introducing the paper prepared by yourself, Dr Jochens and Mr Wolhuter. Once again we are deeply indebted to you for bringing to our attention a new development in the metallurgical field, this time a technique for assessing the suitability of slags for the production of slag cement, and thereby providing a means of turning a waste material into a valuable asset. May we hope that this will lead to an end to unsightly slag dumps and, at the same time, to some conservation of our local limestone resources. Discussion within this Institute on the problems of cement manufacture, has of recent years been all too infrequent, and we thank you for bringing this interesting and important subject again to our notice. We are doubly grateful to you and your co-authors. May I now call on Dr Stutterheim, Deputy Director of the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research, to contribute to your paper, and to tell us something about the Conference on the Chemistry of Cement which he attended in Tokyo towards the end of last year." Ten Council meetings were held during the year with an average attendance of eighteen and the standing committees held forty-six meetings. FINANCE The annual accounts, which are attached to this report, show an excess of income over expenditure of R5 051 compared with an excess of expenditure over income last year of R4 608. This major reversal of fortunes is due in the first instance, of course, to the increased subscriptions. There were, however, other important contributors, particularly sales of the Proceedings of the Symposium on Open Pit Mining and profits on the operation of symposia and colloquia. It would appear from a study of the accounts that there has been a substantial drop in expenditure on secretarial fees. In actual fact, however, our total expenditure on secretarial fees was higher. A portion of this expenditure was charged against the administration of the Symposium on Open Pit Mining and, in addition, the charge against the Journal accounts for secretarial fees was increased. It will be recalled that in last year's annual report it was mentioned that subsequent to the new arrangement for publication of the Journal, the expected improvement in the finances of the Journal had been slow in materialising. After a total period of 18 months there was still no sign of improvement and it was accordingly decided to end the arrangement. As a result, the drain on the finances of the Institute was considerably lessened in the second half of the year. During the course of the year Council became concerned about the rapid depletion of our accumulated funds and gave careful and detailed attention to all aspects of the Institute's financial affairs. Particular attention was given to: 1. The fact that the Institute does not have a solid financial backing and must appeal for funds every time any special event such as a symposium is held. 2. The responsibilities of the Institute to the profession and the community, with particular reference to the desirability of establishing Institute bursaries and participating in other educational activities. 3. The rapidly rising cost of living. 4. The immediate financial position of the Institute. 5. The rapidly increasing cost of publishing the Journal due to the increasing number of papers available. In the meantime the immediate financial position of the Institute has improved but as this is due largely to non-recurring or irregular items of revenue, it should not be given undue weight. After careful consideration it was decided that an appeal should be made to industry for financial assistance, which would be used to cover the cost of symposia and other unusual expenditure and also, if possible, to build up the capital resources of the Institute so that there is a solid foundation for the future. Before appealing to industry, Council wished to be quite certain that there could be no criticism of the Institute for not having done our best in a personal capacity. Furthermore, Council examined many comparative statistics, including those circulated to members, which showed that, while expenditure per member has risen at an average annual rate of 7,5% over the last fifteen years, subscription revenue per member has risen at only 3,4% per annum. It was with this background that your Council decided to raise the subscriptions. Initial approaches have been made to the big mining groups and there has been a very generous response, although the details of how financial assistance will be provided have not yet been worked out. It seems likely that some form of affiliated company membership will be the most suitable method of achieving this. When these details have been fixed, it is the intention to extend the appeal to all corners of the mining industry as well as manufacturing and metallurgical industries. It is believed that these measures will ensure that the finances of the Institute are placed on a firm foundation on which the expanding activities can be planned. The MacArthur Forrest Memorial Fund shows an excess of income over expenditure of R73 and the total fund was, therefore, increased by this amount to R4 411. The balance sheet shows that the market value of quoted shares and debentures increased during the year fron R6 540 to R9 160. The market value is now almost exactly the same as the book value. Accumulated funds now amount to R23 010 compared with R17 959 a year ago.

Until 2000, pricing involved profit taking and cost covering combined with limited global published information. Market information was mostly subjective in nature and large resource companies benefited exclusively from aggregated company information and data. The market constituted producers and consumers only. The nineties saw massive cost cutting drives and re-engineering initiatives and this underwrote the structural changes evident in the late 1990s? economy. This supported South African producers on the international FOB cash cost curve, and ensured profitable coal mining operations. As the debate on relative scarcity of fossil fuels ensued, producers and buyers looked to the developing terminal coal market for direction. The much needed direction was provided when the API coal indices were developed and derivative trading was embraced to include financial institutions, trading houses and hedge funds. The liquidity of coal trades increased rapidly and vastly and market information became obtainable on a daily basis. Interpretation of current and future coal prices became available to all market players and contributed to the sophistication of the market that is now able to participate in risk management of prices, capital expenditure and brownfield developments.

"The primary objective of any mining business unit is to make profit by extracting, processing, and selling minerals from a particular mineral deposit. It is important to optimize extraction of the mineral resource given time, capital, and space constraints. Mineral extraction is often associated with uncertainty due to variable technical and human factors. Technical factors such as grade distribution, ground conditions, and equipment reliability influence the performance of a mining production system (MPS). The performance of the MPS is also impacted by human factors such as employee skills, health, and attendance. Uncertainty associated with technical and human factors often leads to actual output differing from what was planned. Therefore an in-depth analysis of the significant causes of deviations from the planned outcomes is relevant.In this paper we investigate the empirical relationships between inputs and outputs in a MPS in order to assist management in directing efforts at key production drivers. Once a MPS has been empirically characterized, more effort and resources can be focused on the key decision-making variables (DMVs) in order to meet the planned outcomes.For a typical underground, tabular, narrow-reef conventional drill-andblast platinum mine the face advance, face length mined, number of teams, team efficiencies, and team size have a statistically significant relationship with the centares (m²) produced, which is a key performance indicator (KPI). The production function derived in this study can be used to align the physical, technical, and human factors together to predict the optimal output level. The most significant production lever of the MPS is the face advance. IntroductionA mining production system (MPS) is a result of an iterative process of design, planning, and optimization of mining input variables and decision-making variables (DMVs). The MPS exists within the mineral extraction link of the complete mining value chain. It represents the stage where mining companies have the opportunity, through production, to start generating returns on the investments undertaken. Returns on shareholders’ investments can be realized at this stage."

Sheryl Sandberg, the COO of Facebook, published a book titled 'Lean In', where she invites women to sit at the table. In summary, to 'sit at the table' entails not only embracing opportunity, but to actively seek out opportunities in leadership positions. Sandberg points out that, unfortunately, apart from institutional obstacles, a woman's own perceived limitations have a negative impact on her leadership ambitions. To create an environment where diversity will flourish, where everyone has a seat at the table and everyone has a voice, safety must be established first. To establish safety within a diverse team, there is power in relationships and connections. This study will first and foremost review theories in literature as to why diversity and inclusion are so important and the value that diversity brings to our industry. The study also recommends a few focus areas for improving diversity and inclusion in the industry.

Abstract: From the viewpoint of interaction mechanics of solid and gas, a coupled mathematical model is presented for coal/rock mass deformation and gas leak flow in parallel deformable coal seams. Numerical simulations for the prediction of the safety range of mining of protection layer are performed with experimental data from a mine with potential danger of coal/gas outbursts. Analyses show that the numerical simulation results are consistent with the measured data on the spot. Therefore, the coupled model shows a positive future for applications in a wide range. ZUSAMMENFASSUNG:Von der Veranschaulichung der Abhängigkeit Mechaniker für Körper und Gas, wird ein verbundenes mathematisches Modell für festen coal/rock Deformation und Gasleckstelle Fluß in parallele deformable Kohlenähte dargestellt. Numerische Simulationen für die Vorhersage der Sicherheit Strecke, die Schutzschichtbergbau verwendet, werden mit experimentellen Daten von einer Grube mit möglicher Gefahr der coal/gas Ausbrüche durchgeführt. Analysen zeigen, daß die numerischen Simulation Resultate mit den gemessenen Daten bezüglich des Punktes gleichbleibend sind. Folglich zeigt das verbundene Modell eine positive Zukunft für Anwendungen in einer breiten Strecke. RÉSUMÉ: Du point de vue de la mécanique d'interaction pour le solide et le gaz, un modèle mathématique couplé est présenté pour l'écoulement plein de déformation de coal/rock et de fuite de gaz dans les filons houillers deformable parallèles. Des simulations numériques pour la prévision de la gamme de sûreté employant l'exploitation de couche de protection sont effectuées avec des données expérimentales d'une mine avec le danger potentiel des accès de coal/gas. Les analyses prouvent que les résultats numériques de simulation sont conformés aux données mesurées sur place. Par conséquent, le modèle couplé montre un futur positif pour des applications dans un éventail.

"Successful development of projects or life-of-mine strategies requires an understanding of the relative sensitivity of value drivers such as grade, tonnage, energy costs, direct operational costs, and recoveries. For example, the results could vary significantly depending on the grade strategy, given a specific orebody amenable to open pitting.Pit optimization is a very powerful tool widely used in the industry to determine the pit shell with the most attractive value potential. Based on the input parameters utilized, the pit optimization process determines the stripping ratio, mineable reserves, and pit shape, and effectively calculates a cut-off grade, assumed to be the optimal cut-off grade.Once the initial pit optimization process is completed, the need may arise to align the optimization results with the company strategy by further optimizing other criteria, such as maximizing short-term cash flow. This paper describes and discusses the selection of an alternative cutoff grade as a strategic intervention. It involves changing the cut-off grade, effectively increasing the head grade to gain a strategic advantage aligned with the company strategy, with a clear understanding of the financial value impact. With this knowledge, it is clear that pitoptimization establishes the basis for future analysis and refinement.IntroductionIt is common for companies to select the optimal pit shell defining the mineral reserve without much further consideration. However, companies may consider various strategies to optimize the long-term value of the project or to optimize the short-term cash flow. Analysis of the entire life-of-mine value estimation process shows that the selection of a cut-off grade and other parameters should be based on careful analysis. Determining the optimal cut-off grade of ore at a different period during the life of mine to maximize the value is often one of the most difficult challenges for a company.A cut-off grade is the lowest grade that mining activities will target. As a result the average mining grade, which drives the value of a project, will always be higher than the cutoff grade applied.According to Bascetin and Nieto (2007) cut-off optimization is still not widely practised. Cut-off grade optimization is an effort to maximize the value of a project by understanding the capacity constraints in the mine, mill, and the market. At any point during the life of mine, any or all of the limitations on tonnage mined, tonnage milled, and product sold may be constraining the system. To ensure cut-off optimization is done correctly, the capacity constraints must be independent of the cut-off grade."

One of the important facets of The South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy is its service to its members. One way of achieving this objective is by pursuing an active branch structure. In this Spotlight, Richard Beck, Holder of the Regional Development Portfolio, gives the aims of the Institute's branches, with a short note on each branch prepared by the regional chairman. Aims of the Branches: The primary aims of the Branches of The South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy are those of the Institute itself: to further the interest of its members, to uphold the status of the mining and metallurgical profession, and to promote the image of mining and metallurgy. Beyond these 'high' objectives, the branches have a special function in providing a more intimate relationship between the Institute and its members. The branches enable members who live outside the Johannesburg area to participate in the affairs of the Institute to an extent that would not otherwise be possible and that they themselves can define. This is achieved through the holding of social events, colloquia, and visits.

The kinetics of the reactions involved in the non-oxidative dissolution of nickel concentrate in hydrochloric acid were studied by electrochemical and powder-leaching methods. It was found that the rate of non-oxidative dissolution increases with a cathodic shift in the mixed potential, which can be achieved by an increase in the nickel-to-sulphur stoichiometric ratio at the reaction surface. An unactivated concentrate with a sulphur content of 36 per cent exhibited a mixed potential of +O,3V (SCE) and could not be leached satisfactorily in 3 M hydrochloric acid at 60°c. When activated material (18 per cent sulphur) was leached, it had a mixed potential of -O,3V, and high iron and nickel extraction rates. Results reported by other workers on the non-oxidative dissolution of sulphides are explained in terms of the mixed potentials at which dissolution occurs.

ABSTRACT: Determining tunnel stability is a key issue during preliminary site investigation. In contrast, problems of excavatability have been largely ignored. While the choice of an economic tunnelling method is admittedly a clear priority in the planning stage, special investigations focus-sing on rock fragmentation (e.g. drilling or cutting performance, rock mass blastability or tool wear) are rarely carried out. This paper explores possibilities to quantify key parameters for rock mass excavatability in drilling, blasting and cutting by TBMs and roadheaders. RÉSUMÉE: La détermination de la stabilité du tunnel est une question clé lors des études prélimi-naires. En revanche, les problèmes d'excavabilité sont souvent en grande partie ignorés. Tandis que le choix d'une méthode de percement économique est évidemment une priorité claire dans l'étape de planification, des investigations spéciales se concentrant sur la fragmentation de la roche (par exemple le comportement de la roche au forage, à l’excavation ou au dynamitage et l’usure des outil) sont rarement effectuées.
