The Rhodax inertial cone grinder, designed by France?s FCB Group Fives, is the result of three years, theoretical and mechanical research in the field of compression grinding by the research staff of FCB?s CRM minerals research centre. A number of potential uses have been assessed and will be discussed in the paper. The crusher is an inertial grinder that works on the pressurized bed fragmentation principle. The fragmentation force is caused by the rotation of unbalanced masses rather than by an eccentric mass, as is the case in a conventional crusher. This makes it possible to achieve very high reduction ratios. By controlling the speed of rotation of the unbalanced masses, the grinding force can be modified, thus changing the product size distribution. The paper describes the machine layout, operating principles, control parameters and will briefly describe the results obtained on reef, waste and ROM reject pebbles. Some comparisons are made with conventional crushing.

Keywords: Kyoto Protocol, carbon credits, global warming, energy, auditing Climate change is nowadays being taken increasingly seriously, and the link between global warming and the carbon dioxide released in the generation of energy is coming under increasing scrutiny. The Kyoto Protocol was signed in 1997, after five years of negotiation. So far, about 84 countries have ratified this agreement, under which terms developed countries have strict targets linked to their 1990 level of emissions. However, ?greenhouse gas? (such as carbon dioxide) emissions continue to rise alarmingly. According to the World Resources Institute, greenhouse gas emissions in the USA increased 13% from 1990-2002, while Australia recorded a 22% increase. In contrast, the European Union, a Kyoto signatory, has seen a small decline in its emissions during the same period. This is led by the UK and Germany, who reduced their emissions by 15% and 19% respectively. The concept of ?carbon credits? provides a funding mechanism for companies in the developed world to compensate for some of their CO2 emissions by paying companies (trading credits) elsewhere in the world to undertake projects to bring about reductions in emissions. In the southern African mining industry, it will be possible to get refunded for undertaking voluntary emission-reduction projects. Concern about the environment is creating business opportunities. A preliminary calculation has shown that various projects in South Africa (those in the pipeline, with quite a high likelihood of coming off) could earn a combined total of about R2.5-billion, under the initial phase of the Kyoto Protocol's carbon-credit scheme, which allows developed-country companies to trade credits with developing countries. A number of local companies are planning projects that could comply with the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM), in which they will implement techniques to achieve certified emission reductions (CERs) of greenhouse gases. In order to prevent abuse of such a system involving vast sums of money, vigorous audits need to be carried out. A company has to prove it has made real changes and is not simply conducting business as usual under a cloak of claimed environmental improvements. PricewaterhouseCoopers has applied to become one of only a few international agencies that will be accredited to conduct validation and verification of the credits, by auditing what is called the ?designated operational entity?. An independent validator needs to confirm that the project meets the strict requirements of the Kyoto Protocol. The company has to demonstrate that it?s not business as usual. So, if you refurbished every five years, the next refurbishment is not a good CDM project, unless you can demonstrate that you will do something beyond the maintenance - that is what can be registered. So, Kyoto intends to get additional projects going, and the money for that is actually quite good - prices of 14 euros per ton of carbon dioxide not emitted have been seen. The price depends on who takes the risk for non-delivery if a project doesn?t deliver the emission reductions on time. The highly energy-intensive South African mining industry is heavily dependent on coal. There should be many opportunities for the pyrometallurgical industry to come up with creative ideas to reduce emissions, and there is now an additional financial incentive to encourage this. Companies can actually get money in return for doing these types of projects, in addition to the contribution to corporate social responsibility.

The use of Molecular Recognition Technology (MRT), a highly selective separation technology using specifically designed ligands (such as macrocycles), has been demonstrated to be an effective treatment process for removal of several ions that are commonly found in many hydrometallurgical circuits as well as in environ-mental treatment operations. Ions removed by MRT include base, heavy and transition metals, precious metals, halides, and alkali/alkaline earths. A MRT pilot plant run was conducted at Zincor to demonstrate the cobalt/nickel purification of zinc electrolyte, and to recover saleable pure cobalt/nickel sulphate solution. The MRT process holds various advantages, which include the elimination of a catalyst such as arsenic trioxide, conventionally used in cobalt and nickel cementation. SuperLig® 138 can be used to remove cobalt and nickel from120?170 g/l Zn-solutions at pH 1?2. The Zincor MRT application demonstrated its capability of concentrating large volumes o copper barren impure solution at low cobalt and nickel concentration levels in the feed, to small solution volumes at high cobalt and nickel concentrations. Around 99.5% of the cobalt was removed from solution with cobalt impurity levels in feed varying between 10 mg/l and 26 mg/l.

ABSTRACT: Hydraulic experiments have been conducted since 1997 within a small fractured calcareous rock mass in southeastern France, at a site called Coaraze. On this reduced-scale site closing a floodgate located on a downstream spring produces repeated hydraulic loadings. Simultaneous measurements of normal deformations and pressure in several joints have provided a better understanding of the hydromechanical behaviour of such a fractured rock mass. The present paper first describes both the site and conceptual interpretation of the measurements performed. We showed that accurate measurement reproduction requires incorporating certain features: a variable normal joint stiffness, the joint vicinity (through introducing a Z coefficient), and the initial stress state. The paper then develops an original analytical interpretation of the coupled pressure-displacement measurements carried out, which reveal the high level of measurement suitability to the non-linear behaviours examined. 2D modelling, using the discontinuous code (UDEC) was used to proceed with the calibration step. Gleichzeitiger Druck und normale Verformung Meßungen in mehreren Fugen haben erlaubt, das hydromechanische Verhalten einer solche gebrochene Felsenmasse besser zu verstehen. Der Artikel beschreibt zuerst den Standort und stellt die begrifflichen Interpretationen der Meßungen vor. Um die Meßungen gut zu reproduzieren ist es wesentlich, bestimmte Faktoren wie die veränderliche normale Steifheit der Fugen, die Nachbarschaft der Fugen (über einen Z-Koeffizient) und der Spannungstand zu berücksichtigen. Der Artikel erklärt die originale Methode für die Druck- und Verformungs-Meßungen Interpretation und zeigt die gute Korrelation der Meßungen mit dem nicht-linearen angenommen Verhaltens der Fugen. As a result of the depletion of high-grade manganese reserves, it has become necessary to consider the exploitation of low-grade manganese ores. The main problem of low-grade manganese ore is the low Mn/Fe ratio, which makes it unfit for the production of manganese ferroalloys. In this work, a selective reduction technique was used for smelting low-manganese ore in the presence of coke and fluxing material in an electric submerged arc furnace to obtain a rich manganese slag and low-manganese pig iron. The product slag was blended with medium-manganese ore and smelted in an electric submerged arc furnace, in the presence of coke and the fluxing agent, to produce silicomanganese alloy. The influence of reducing agent ratio, charge basicity, and charge Mn/Si ratio on the smelting process was investigated. The optimum conditions were found to be a coke ratio of, 1.35, Mn/Si ratio of 2.0, and charge basicity of 2.5. The silicomanganese alloy produced under these conditions satisfies the specifications for Si16Mn63 and Si17Mn65. The experimental results were applied on a pilot scale, producing a silicomanganese alloy with a chemical composition close to that of the standard specifications.

A simple method for the application of excess shear stress (ESS) analysis to the mining of planar reefs is examined. The potential for seismicity associated with mining is expressed as the calculated increase in ESS on a regular grid of points 50 m above the reef, and is compared with observed seismicity around a deep-level, relatively geologicaly-undisturbed gold mine. Thirty regions were studied, involving over 2000 seismic events with magnitudes greater than 1,5 on the Richter scale and associated with almost 2 million square metres of stoping. The total seismicity, measured either as the number of seismic events or as the total radiated energy, corelated more closely with changes in ESS than with ERR. The incidence of rockbursts also favoured the ESS model. Corelation coeficients of around 0,8 for seismicity and ESS indicated that the assumptions inherent in the method used are collectively reasonable. The total seismicity in each region was found not to be strongly controlled by the presence of dykes and faults, although numerous individual seismic events were located close to such features.

For many years the concept of life cycle costing (LCC) was promoted for decision making in corrosion protection systems. Nevertheless, the application of LCC was limited. Input data was often sourced from suppliers and met with scepticism. As a result final analysis was often insufficiently rigorous to meet the needs of Project Managers in sound decision making. The need for expediency often resulted in non-optimal corrosion protection system specifications. With improved communications and the global reach of industries, case history data, based upon actual performance has been able to provide input to substantiate decision making. However, today?s focus upon sustainability whereby environmental, economic and even social aspects enter into decision making has extended LCC into Life Cost Analysis (LCA). In an LCA analysis energy and environmental inputs into systems are compared as part of an overall assessment. The development of Agenda 21 at the Rio summit of 1992 has challenged the countries of the world to look at sustainable development in every economic activity. This ranges from construction to mining to electricity production to automotive production, use and disposal. The protection of buildings, infrastructure and transport systems is part of the needs of sustainable development. Zinc based corrosion protection has been an important part of the arsenal of the corrosion protection industry. This paper will highlight the use of LCC and the development of LCA with reference to the use of zinc based protection systems in a number of important industries.

This paper addresses the prediction of groutable joint apertures, grout penetration limitations, and possible grout take volumes per cubic metre of rock, as a result of 5 to 10 MPa pre-injection pressures ahead of tunnels. Joints are obviously opened more than in the preceding Lugeon tests, and many rock mass properties can apparently be improved if stable micro-cement based materials are used. Cet article concerne la prédiction des ouvertures des fractures injectables, les limites de pénétration du coulis et les volumes injectés par mètre cube, d’après les résultats des injections à l’avant tête des tunnels sous pressions de 5 à 10 MPa. Pushback 8 South is the final cut back on the south wall of the East Pit at BHPBilliton?s Mt Whaleback iron ore mine in the Pilbara region of Western Australia. Development of the cutback commenced in 1999 and is now nearing completion with ultimate pit walls up to 300m high. This paper describes the geotechnical, structural and hydrogeological setting of PB8S, reconciliation between design and slope performance and the slope engineering techniques used to effectively manage the risks associated with the slope. These techniques include slope buttressing and sequential mining with waste backfilling, as well as a detailed program of displacement and hydrogeological monitoring, structural mapping and slope stability assessment. During the course of slope formation recent developments in remote slope displacement monitoring using radar and remote structural mapping using terrestrial photogrammetry have also been applied. Aspects of the PB8S slope management plan are relevant to many large scale open pit slopes. This paper provides geotechnical practitioners with information which may be helpful in managing geotechnical risk in similar environments.

Ausmelt is supplying commercial quantities of an alkyl hydroxamate flotation collector AM28 for flotation of oxide and supergene base metal ores and tailings. AM28 is a non-hazardous product used as a ten per cent to 50 per cent solution in dilute potassium hydroxide. It is a selective flotation collector for oxide or oxidised base metal minerals and replaces conventional sulfidisation for oxide mineral flotation. At Radio Hill, the AM28 is used in conjunction with traditional sulfide collectors, which allows simultaneous flotation of oxide and sulfide copper minerals. The Fox Resources Radio Hill copper concentrator near Karratha, Western Australia, is currently configured to treat supergene copper ore sourced from the West Whundo open pit. This Archean VMS type copper deposit has been deformed and remobilised with uplift, erosion and weathering to form a significant supergene zone. The sulfide copper minerals present in the upper zone are digenite and chalcocite with lesser chalcopyrite and covellite. Oxide copper minerals present include cuprite, with lesser malachite and azurite. Gangue minerals include quartz, talc and chlorite. Plant trials at Radio Hill are reported for supergene West Whundo ore, where the AM28 was stage added into the circuit at nominally 80 g/t. Plant data over three months shows the copper recovery increased consistently from around 50 - 60 per cent to above 70 per cent when AM28 was added. This has been proven statistically. The grade of the concentrate was consistent with and without AM28, at nominally 22 - 24 per cent copper.

Petrographic analyses of coal rank and maceral-group composition are widely used in the characterization of coal. This paper describes the use of an image analyser (IBAS Kontron) for fuly automated measurements of the rank and maceral groups of seam coals. The rank is then derived from reflectance histograms, or 'fingerprints', of coal reflectance distributions (being expressed as the mean random reflectance of vitrinite). The volume proportions of the maceral groups are calculated from the histograms. The results obtained with the IBAS were generally in agreement with those obtained by conventional methods of reflectance measurement and point-count analysis. However, the results were inconsistent for coals with a bimodal character or a wide V-class distribution. The rank of the analysed coals ranged from 0,50 to 1,10 per cent mean random reflectance. The lowest reflectance that can be analysed with the IBAS is 0,4 per cent. The speed, objectiveness, and repeatability of this technique make it exceptionally suitable for use in the quality control of large numbers of samples.

The construction of the Guaigui Multipurpose Project includes a 74 metre high concrete face rock fill dam, a 350 metre long diversion tunnel and a 350 metre long spillway tunnel. The topography in the project area is very steep, and the rock masses are characterized as soft rocks. The stability of the 80 to 100 metre high dam abutments and the excavation of the tunnels in soft rock conditions have caused various challenges and problems to be solved. Limited pre-investigations have called to a great extent for estimation of parameters for the stability calculations based on experience. The preliminary calculation of the stability of the planned rock slope above the spillway intake platform has been carried out by conventional partial factor methods and by use of a computed based Slide Program. The two methods of calculation give different results , and that rock support is necessary to obtain an acceptable factor of safety for a slope inclination of 52o. The input parameters for the rock mass characteristics need to be verified for the permanent calculations.

"Exploitation of an ore deposit can be optimized by adapting the beneficiation processes to the properties of individual ore blocks. This can involve switching in and out certain treatment steps, or setting their controlling parameters. Optimizing this set of decisions requires the full conditional distribution of all relevant physical parameters and chemical attributes of the feed, including concentration of value elements and abundance of penalty elements. As a first step towards adaptive processing, the mapping of adaptive decisions is explored based on the composition, in value and penalty elements, of the selective mining units.Conditional distributions at block support are derived from cokriging and geostatistical simulation of log-ratios. A one-to-one log-ratio transformation is applied to the data, followed by modelling via classical multivariate geostatistical tools, and subsequent back-transforming of predictions and simulations. Back-transformed point-support simulations can then be averaged to obtain block averages that are fed into the process chain model.The approach is illustrated with a ‘toy’ example where a fourcomponent system (a value element, two penalty elements, and some liberable material) is beneficiated through a chain of technical processes. The results show that a gain function based on full distributions outperforms the more traditional approach of using unbiased estimates."

Outotec?s direct leaching process is an atmospheric leaching process for sulphidic zinc concentrates. The direct leaching process, based on special leaching reactors developed by Outokumpu, is the most economical way to produce electrolytic zinc. The production scale applications of the process realized so far are in use at Boliden?s Kokkola and Odda zinc plants. A new full-scale application of Outotec?s direct leaching process will be started in 2008 in China. The process is integrated to the existing production plant, replacing part of the old production facilities by modern technology. Besides high zinc extraction the plant expansion and modernization offers also indium recovery, iron precipitation and solution purification processes. The process equipment includes tailor-made reactors designed on the basis of the work and experience of Outotec research center. The standard technology for processing of gold-bearing sulfide raw material has many problems associated with the use of cyanide as a gold lixiviant. Therefore, many tests to find alternative gold recovery methods are being undertaken. This paper describes some technological solutions, which can become alternatives to cyanide technology in the future. Pressure oxidation (POX) of refractory gold-bearing sulfide concentrates from five different Russian gold deposits were investigated. Concentrate 1 was gold-copper concentrate. Concentrate 2 was gold-pyrite concentrate. Concentrates 3-5 were pyrite-arsenopyrite double refractory concentrates. The POX tests were at temperatures of 110, 200 and 220 °C and oxygen pressures of 1.5, 2.4 and 3.0 MPa were carried out. Gold lixiviants, such as chloride, thiosulfate, sulfite and thiocyanate were tested. The recovery of gold from sulfide gold-bearing concentrates by non-cyanide methods was 97- 99%, and from double refractory concentrates, 86-93%. The tested reagents are less toxic than cyanide, and their use will reduce of the cost of gold production. These methods make it possible to recover gold in acidic media, and eliminate the washing operation and POX slurry neutralisation. In addition, precious metals recovery from POX cakes using lead reduction smelting was investigated. It was shown that the “POX-pyrometallurgical” technology for double refractory concentrates processing could be used with recoveries of gold and silver of 97 and 96%, respectively. Muckpile fragmentation formed by blasting depends on the specific charge factor, the discontinuities in the rock mass, and the rock strength. Determination of the discontinuity characteristics and rock strength is a long and difficult process. These two parameters are directly associated with the rock drilling speed. Therefore, it is the drilling speed of the machine used for the blast-hole, rather than the blasthole discontinuity characteristics and rock strength parameters, that is used in the prediction of muckpile fragmentation before blasting. Primarily, it has been suggested that the muckpile fragmentation values can be correctly determined by establishing correlations between the efficiency of the loader and muck pile fragmentation, since fragmentation is directly correlated with the former parameter. Subsequently, a correlation predicting the drilling speed of the drill machine was developed according to the discontinuity characteristics of the blasting surface and the rock strength. Finally, a correlation was developed predicting muckpile fragmentation according to the specific charge factor and the drilling speed of the drill machine The data was obtained by conducting blasting tests in two different limestone quarries.

Experimental studies for quantification of force and brittleness indices relevant to rock cutting performance are presented. A simple interpretation method is developed, which quantifies the force-penetration response obtained from indentation tests. Basic parameters of the quantification are force increment and decrementrates, force increment and decrement periods, and number of increment and decrement data points. Blocks of eleven different rock samples were collected from different operating mines in Turkey and subjected to indentation tests to calculate the indices. The samples included harzburgite, serpentinite, trona, limestone, claystone, two different sandstone samples, siltstone and three different chromite ore samples. The concept was validated by a set of full-scale linear cutting tests using a conical cutter for measuring the cutting performance in relieved and unrelieved conditions, i.e. cutter forces, specific energy, size distribution of rock cuttings. The rock cuttings were sieved to determine coarseness index, indicates coarse chip generation characteristics, and size distribution. The force index is moderately correlated with the cutting performance and mechanical properties of the rocks, and poorly correlated with the coarseness index and size distribution of cuttings. A general and moderate trend is observed between the brittleness index and the coarseness index, cutting performance for unrelieved cutting conditions and mechanical properties of the rocks. However, additional data is required to fill the data gaps and to potentially establish relationship between the brittleness index and all other parameters.

Perceptions of disaster caused by burning fossil fuels have reached such a pitch that they seriously threaten the very future of the industry. Coal is a dirty word. A leader in Business Day(January 192009) claimed ?There is no disputing that renewable and non-polluting energy sources are preferable to the country?the true cost of so-called cheap coal-fired power stations is neither reflected nor accounted for by Eskom?the true and immediate but unacknowledged cost of continued coal mining is apparent in the catastrophic level of acidification from mining runoff of all significant natural water resources in the country?and their waters have been rendered unfit for human consumption. Air quality is in a similar state with?increases in pulmonary disease causing workforce absenteeism and compromised childhood development, among many other health problems recorded in areas polluted by coal mining.? The upshot is that our latest coal-fired power station, Kusile, is being required to use flue gas desulphurization. The costs are considerable, and the benefits minimal. Meanwhile, exports are being threatened by EU directives and an assumption that South African coal gives off excessive quantities of SOx and NOx when burned. The industry needs to arm itself with clear responses to these and similar misconceptions, and to communicate those responses loudly and clearly, if it is to survive.

Two column flotation cells have been installed as single-stage rougher cleaners at Batu Hijau. The objective was to provide additional residence time in the cleaner circuit to maintain maximum recovery during high mill throughput and high feed grade periods. Installation of the columns has allowed the relatively coarse, well-liberated rougher concentrate and the relatively fine, low-grade scavenger concentrate to be treated separately, improving metallurgical performance in the cleaner circuit. Plant results show that the columns produce a high-grade concentrate at an average stage copper recovery of approximately 80 per cent. There is also indication of increases in both overall plant copper recovery and final concentrate copper grade. In addition, the operability and stability of the cleaner circuit has greatly improved.

Bateman Engineering managed the establishment of a second diamond treatment plant at the Letseng Mine in the Mokhotlong District of northern Lesotho, about 100 km from the town of Buthe Buthe. Letseng Diamonds Proprietary Limited, is owned 70 % by Gem Diamonds and 30 % by the Government of the Kingdom of Lesotho. The second plant, which commenced construction in late 2006, doubled Letseng Mines' hard rock processing capacity from 2.6 million t/yr to 5.2 million t/yr, making it the worlds' seventh largest diamond mine by throughput. Bateman Engineering provided the engineering design, procurement and construction management of the new plant.
