Discussion Dr R. E. Robinson (Fellow): The author must be congratulated on a very meticulous and self-contained piece of work. It is indeed a pleasure to read a paper that is so clearly and systematically laid out, and where the conclusions and the testwork conducted have been so clearly described. The paper is complete in itself, which makes it very difficult for someone who is not intimately involved in the whole Torco project to make any comments on its content. However, two points that, strictly speaking, fall outside the scope of the paper are of considerable interest. The first relates to the particle size of the material treated. In the paper, the testwork is confined to one standard particle size (minus 60 plus 100 mesh). The essential feature of the paper is to indicate that the rate-controlling reaction in the whole segregation process is the rate of reaction of the ore particles with the reducing agent and the hydrogen chloride. One wonders, therefore, to what extent this relatively slow rate of reaction is affected by the particle size of the ore itself. One imagines that the reaction must take place by contact of the hydrogen chloride with the surface of the mineral particles, and it is reasonable to suspect that the rate of diffusion of the copper ions to the surface is a relatively slow process and is thus the limiting factor in this particular rate of reaction. It is possible, for example, that the improvement obtained, when the ore is subjected to reducing conditions before the chlorination, is due to a breakdown in the crystal structure of the original particle. This breakdown is brought about by the reduction and by the consequent increase in surface area available for reaction with hydrogen chloride. Can the author indicate whether any work has been done along these lines, and whether it has been established that the reaction depends on the surface area available? The second point relates to the application of this kinetic study to the actual operation of a Torco reactor. It was once planned to feed the sodium chloride, together with the reducing agent, into the top of the segregation chamber. In the paper, the author mentions that it has now been established that the segregation chamber behaves, to all intents and purposes, as a fluidized bed, and that there is, therefore, a rapid evolution of gas in the lower regions of the chamber, which, it is imagined, displaces the gas phase rapidly. Since the reaction between sodium chloride, water vapour, and the aluminium silicates in the ore is extremely rapid, one wonders how much of the hydrogen chloride produced is removed from the reaction zone before it has had time to react with the copper minerals. The extremely low consumption of sodium chloride (which is a vital feature of the Torco process) must depend on an extremely rapid circulation of the hydrogen chloride gas to all the ore particles in the segregation chamber. One wonders, therefore, if a system for the introduction of the sodium chloride into the bottom regions of the chamber might not result in even greater efficiency in the utilization of sodium chloride. ProC D. D. Howat (Fellow): All of us who have been concerned with the study of chemical reactions at high temperatures are keenly interested in kinetics and are well aware that this is not an easy study experimentally. Dr. Brittan is to be congratulated on the development of neat experimental methods and for his full discussion of the results obtained. Although the segregation process for the extraction of copper from oxide and silicate ores has been known for almost fifty years, the fundamental chemical and physical changes involved have been little understood and the fundamental data are very scanty. The work now in progress at A.A.R.L., together with that sponsored by the Anglo American Corporation in other research institutions throughout the world, is bound to produce new fundamental data and a much more complete understanding of this rather fascinating process. It is already apparent that some of the old and well-worn chemical reactions that were postulated to occur, just cannot take place in the way which was formerly accepted. Dr Brittan's work, carefully conducted and thoroughly analyzed as it has been, still leaves us with one great outstanding problem. The thermodynamic data and the possible reactions set out in Table I (page 281) of his paper leave us asking, in complete despair, how can copper be converted into a volatile chloride in the presence of HCl, CO and carbon at temperatures about 800°C? The thermodynamics all combine to show that copper should be reduced to metal as the first step in the process. This brings us right up against the second problem. If copper were reduced to the metal how would HCI convert it to the volatile chloride? On top of these problems is the unknown reason for the very high speed of reaction between CO, HCI and the ground copper ore. Still further into the region of the unknown is the reaction by which gaseous hydrochloric acid is produced in the actual process. Perhaps Dr Brittan is feeling grateful that he doesn't have to try to explain this reaction-at this stage of the research programme at least. The results very clearly show that both CO and HCl gas are essential for rapid production of the volatile copper chloride. Dr Brittan states that 18 minutes were required to attain 83 per cent extraction with HCl gas alone and this was reduced to 4 minutes when CO was

M J Martinson (Fellow) There is everywhere a lamentable dearth of quantitative information on occupational factors affecting the health and safety of mineworkers, and as the authors point out in their introduction underground lighting is one of the factors which has received little attention in South Africa prior to this welcome paper. Since the authors are to some extent pioneering, it is perhaps inevitable that the paper should raise more questions than it answers, but nevertheless it provides a provisional yardstick against which the need for, and success of, remedial action may be judged. Before commenting in detail on a few aspects of the paper it may be worthwhile to summarize the statutory provisions relating to underground lighting, contained in Chapter 15 of the Regulations promulgated in terms of the Mines and Works Act 27 of 1956. Chapter 15 is entitled `Lighting, Safety Lamps and Contraband', but in the context of the present paper only four simple regulations need be noted: firstly, no person shall work or travel in an unilluminated part of a mine unless he carries a light ; secondly, adequate stationary lights shall be provided at stations and certain other localities in shafts, winzes and places used for winding; thirdly, mechanically propelled conveyances shall be provided with an effective bright light shining in the direction of travel; and fourthly, moving machinery to which personnel have access shall be illuminated so as to be clearly visible. In all four regulations the standard of lighting to be provided is wholly subjective, and under these circumstances the wide inter- and intra-mine variations in light intensity disclosed by the study are hardly unexpected. Nevertheless the data presented in the authors' Table I raise three points (1) Is there any evidence that the 19 mines visited during the survey are representative of the 45-50 large gold mines in South Africa, or that the shafts selected are representative of the respective mines? Mine managers would scarcely be human were they not to offer better lit working places for the survey; perhaps the use of a scaling factor (e.g. tonnes or transit mineworkers per shift, kilowatts, etc.) for each working place might have helped to put the figures in perspective. (2) Looking at two of the more numerous - and probably important - of the ten working places included in the survey, i.e. stations and tips, one is struck by the marked. skewness of both intensity distributions (with higher frequencies at the lower intensities) and the abrupt cut-off in both cases just short of pitch darkness. Thus, of the 45 meaned readings recorded at 26 tips no less than 19 fall in the lowest range of 0,1-0,9 1m/ft2, with but one tip in total darkness; of 46 readings on 26 stations, 7 fall in the lowest range and none is in total dark-'1 ness. Although a light with an intensity in the range 0,1-0,9 1m/ft2 may satisfy the regulations, it is certainly arguable that in some situations it may be safer to have no light at all. (3) In view of the skewness referred to above, one wonders how meaningful are the `total average light intensities for (the gold mining) industry' quoted in Table I, which the authors compare with illumina¬tion levels found in other countries. Looking at tips again, one notes that 34 out of 45 meaned intensity readings fall below the `total average' for tips, and only 10 exceed it. From this it may be concluded that a few well-lit working places included in a `total average' may conceal a plethora in Stygian gloom. In their discussion the authors make fleeting reference to the effect of underground lighting on productivity and accident rates, without however quoting any South African experience in this regard. Intuitively it seems highly likely that better lighting (in the widest sense) would improve productivity and reduce accidents, and of course it is in these areas that the mining industry might seek economic justification for providing better lighting. It is all the more regrettable therefore that these factors were not studied simultaneously with the present investigation, especially at the Psychological Division of the Human Sciences Laboratory has recently published a study on underground accidents in the gold mining industry without making any reference whatsoever to lighting as a causal factor. In the event neither of the two studies enables us to make an economic appreciation of the situation, and this seems to be a classic example of a situation where some dovetailing of research effort would have greatly increased the useful return. On the effect of lighting on accidents, it may be noted that in 1939 Mickel presented some very interesting statistics to the Mine Managers Association of the Transvaal2, on the improvement in accident rates which followed the random issue of electric cap lamps to native mineworkers in the Hercules Section of E.R.P.M. the previous year. Based on a 12 month trial period in which 250 000 shifts were worked with carbide lamps and (contemporaneously) 307 000 shifts with cap lamps, the incidence of major accidents (at least one day in hospital among men using carbide lamps was 1,15 accidents per 1000 shifts, while the incidence of minor accidents (requiring dressing only) was 11,52 per 1 000 shifts. The corresponding figures for men using cap lamps were 0,79 and 7,31 accidents per 1 000 shifts respectively, representing a reduction of over 30 per cent in both major and minor accidents. While these figures are obviously dated - only men using cap lamps were issued with hard hats, for instance - they do indicate a need for similar research today.

The estimation of the tonnage and grade of payable ore in a mine and the correct policy of selective mining based on such estimates, is of vital importance to the mining engineer it is surprising, therefore, that more attention has not been devoted on the Witwatersrand to the scientific improvement of mine valuation methods. At present these methods consist almost entirely of the application of simple arithmetic and empirical formulae guided by practical experience, and ignore the many advantages to be gained from a careful statistical analysis of the behaviour of the gold values. The science of statistics has expanded rapidly during the last two decades and its value as a powerful and indispensable tool is now recognized not only by research workers and scientists but also, ever-increasingly, by the commercial and industrial world. This being the case it is noteworthy that in a mining field such as the Rand with its highly developed and advanced mining methods, singularly little attention has been paid to the analysis of mine valuation problems on a modern statistical basis. This omission is even more striking when cognizance is taken of the wealth of sampling data concerning the gold ore which is available and of the far-reaching decisions and deductions constantly being based on such data. Some contributions have however been made from time to time towards the application of statistics to mine valuation on the Rand (References Nos. 7, 8, 9, 11, and 12), but none of these have been generally applied in practice and a systematic practical approach based on clearly deemed fundamental concepts still appears to be lacking. The object of this paper is, therefore, to define these statistical concepts and to indicate briefly the lines along which statistical methods can be applied profitability in solving some of the existing problems and in improving the general standard of mine valuation on the Rand For this purpose a knowledge of mathematical statistics is essential, but as this paper is primarily intended to provide the mine valuator with a practical introduction to statistical application in his field, the mathematics is confined to a short annexure, together with references from which details can be obtained.

Although some of the platinum(II/IV) and rhodium(III) chemistry is considered ?old? and well-known, the application of modern multinuclear NMR spectroscopic methods to this chemistry in solution reveals new details about their rich and relevant solution chemistry. In this paper we will briefly illustrate that the highly-sensitive 195Pt NMR shielding is an excellent probe to explore aspects such as solvation, ion-pairing, and the hydrolysis chemistry of inter alia [PtCl6-n(H2O)n]n-2 (n=0-5). Moreover the novel use of 35Cl/37Cl and 18O isotopes effects as unique NMR ?fingerprints? leading to a new and unambiguous method of chemical speciation of the numerous possible PtII/IV and RhIII complexes present in halide-rich aqueous solutions. In the case of Rh(III) chemistry a new, direct speciation distribution diagram has been established for [RhCln(H2O)6-n]3-n complexes (n = 3-6) in HCl solution at 292 K with these methods.

Modern soil mechanics is generally considered to have begun in 1925, when Karl Terzaghi published his book Erdbaumechanik auf bodenphysikalischer Grundlage (Earthwork Mechanics based on the Physics of Soils). These theories were applied to rocks more than 20 years later and the science of rock mechanics became established. Methods of analysis and design have been introduced and applied, and have evolved over time. More recently, the rapid growth in computing power has resulted in more sophisticated analyses, and together with improved monitoring techniques, our understanding of geomechanics has grown considerably. Despite this, geotechnical failures with major consequences still do occur. This is partly due to failure to transfer and apply the knowledge that has been gained, but also there are aspects of geomechanics that are not well understood.

Since the early 1990s the underground mining industry has embarked on a vigorous program of improving process and eliminating costs. A leading development in this program has been the implementation of leaky feeder radio systems as an enabling infrastructure for future automation. El-Equip Inc. has led this development with more than 175 mines implementing mine-wide radio infrastructures for voice and data. In this paper, we describe the implementation of a digital radio network which supports existing installations through to an automation infrastructure employing full digital cellular communications with mobile video roaming capabilities. We outline the evolutionary path from existing low speed data communications links through to 155 Mbps and beyond.

Typical depressants for selective reverse flotation of iron oxides from complex silicates do not generally show high levels of efficiency. Therefore, as a hot topic, there are several ongoing investigations in this area. The main aim of this paper is exploring the potential of using humic acid (HA) as a depressant in reverse cationic flotation of hematite from complex silicates. For such a process, the wettability and flotation behaviour of pure minerals (hematite and silicates) was investigated at pH 10 in the presence of HA and cationic collector. Adsorption mechanism of HA on these minerals was measured by zeta-potential and FTIR. Results of flotation tests showed that at the lower concentrations of HA, selective separation of silicates from hematite is beneficial, where the floatability of amphibole was higher than pyroxene. A higher separation efficiency of hematite through reverse flotation was observed in the presence of amphibole, in comparison with the presence of pyroxene. Wettability studies showed that HA has a significant effect on reducing the hydrophobicity of treated minerals with the collector. The adsorption, ZPC and FTIR test results indicated that HA was adsorbed on both silicates and hematite. However, the absorption intensity onto hematite was much higher than silicates. It was found that the adsorption mechanism of HA on hematite takes place through both strong H-bonding and ligand exchange. Published information is available on the radiological impacts of disposing of zircon sand in a landfill. Zircon flour by virtue of its finer particle size presents a different set of issues during disposal. This paper describes two options for disposal of such fine grained materials – namely incorporation into concrete aggregates and agglomeration by addition of cement. The study considers the radiological exposure of the public from such disposal methods and concludes that these options are viable alternatives for the safe disposal of waste zircon flour. The disposal of zircon into concrete aggregates at a rate of 10 per cent produces a sufficiently low effect to allow such aggregates to be used in building foundations or other such mass concrete applications. The use of cement agglomeration methods will also provide a safe method of landfill disposal provided at least 20 cm of soil cover is included.

The results of prospecting operations involving geological data and a large number of geochemical determinations of the metal content of soil samples are plotted and evaluated by computer. Anomalous areas are identified in each type of environment by selecting probability or population boundary values from frequency distributions. The anomalies are plotted to permit correlation with geographical or geological features. Ranking of prospecting targets is made using geographic pattern, geology, absolute value and metal ratios. Three short case histories are presented.

The South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy hosted a School on 'The Practical Design of Comminution Processes' at Megawatt Park (near Johannesburg) on 14th to 16th May, 1991 Derek Barratt, a Senior Consultant of Wright Engineers, Canada, and the main speaker, provided a good insight into how Wright Engineers design milling circuits, particularly large semi-autogenous mills. He was ably assisted by Jens Lichterof Allis Mineral Systems, who described some interesting examples of pilot-plant testwork and summarized South African milling practice. The reassessment of coal reserves has become a matter of urgency and has come as a result of the present situation of the industry, in the context of globalized coal economies, as well as new mining legislation and the advantages and difficulties of domestic coal suppliers. The de Jager report concerning coal reserves, released twenty years ago, can no longer be used as an estimate for accurately forecasting South Africa’s future coal production. The new reserve and resource study will promote the diversification of energy sources and provide a clearer view of the future of coal mining in the country. With plans to increase South Africa’s coal export capacity to approximately 84 million tons by 2005, it is uncertain whether the country really has sufficient reserves to meet this expansion, as well as satisfy the projected increase in inland demand. The face of South Africa’s coal industry and by association, the economy of our coal-dependent country, are both set to change. This is mainly due to factors such as the demise of most of the large collieries over the last approximately twenty years, growing numbers of economic empowerment producers, the emergence of strong competition in the export market, the dawn of Clean Coal Technologies (CCTs) and the Kyoto Protocol The paper will attempt to dispel some of the current myths about coalfields and reserves and highlight potential areas of high quality coal reserves, available mainly to new entrants in the industry. Obviously all mining operations require much analytical work to be carried out. This starts with exploration, becomes more stringent with the evaluation of a mineralised area and finally becomes on-going when mining operations are under way. All these phases are carried out by geologists, metallurgists and mining engineers. They require analyses to carry out their functions but usually have no involvement in the analyses themselves. Analyses are carried out at commercial laboratories or in-house analytical laboratories. In the past in South Africa the tendency was for the larger mining houses to have their own centralised laboratories for exploration samples with each mine having it?s own laboratory to meet only that mine?s requirements. The centralised laboratory maintains QC functions at the subsidiary laboratories. In other mining areas of the world there has been a strong tendency for all geological analytical requirements, especially for exploration and mining, to be carried out at commercial analytical laboratories. In recent years there has been a tendency for mines in South Africa to move in the same direction. This paper discusses the factors that need to be taken into consideration when a new laboratory is being planned and automation is an option. The planning of the laboratory at the new Langer Heinrich Uranium mine in Namibia is discussed considering these factors. 2.0 REQUIREMENTS OF A MINING ANALYTICAL LABORATORY The purpose and requirements of a mining analytical laboratory are fairly obvious and can be summarised as follows :- 1. All mining operations must have access to analytical facilities, either in-house or commercial 2. The laboratory must be able to handle all the sample types submitted by the mining operation These can be mining, exploration and/or plant samples. They can comprise solids (rocks, bore-cores), slurries and/or liquids.

Two different methods of fuzzy multiple criteria decision making have been proposed to solve the problem of mining method selection in the paper titled ?Mining method selection by multiple criteria decision making tool, by Bitarafan and Ataei. This problem is really important and also difficult to solve because of the need of handling many criteria simultaneously in the process of decision making. Bitarafan and Ataei have selected 15 criteria for the case study in their paper and those criteria have not been clustered/grouped yet. The number of selected criteria is only 15, although there are more criteria that should be handled in a real case, because they have used Saaty?s method in the section ?Fuzzy multiple attribute decision making? in their paper. Saaty?s method considers the pair wise comparison of criteria and uses random indexed which have already been derived and published. Available random indexes, however, have been derived for maximum 15 criteria so far.

The processing of heavy mineral concentrates can be enhanced by the use of power ultrasound to clean their surfaces of oxidation products and fine coatings, mainly through the large, but very localized forces, produced by cavitation. Results are presented of the application of power ultrasound to remove coatings from the surfaces of mineral sand concentrates in order to improve the sharpness of their high-tension separation and, in some cases, the quality of the low iron components such as zircon. Improvements of 10–15% in recovery and up to 20% in grade compared to unsonicated material were achieved in a single stage laboratory high-tension separation. Cavitation also ensures that a fresh, clean surface is presented to leachants during the leaching of suspended solids. At the same time, the effect of cavitation and the shearing effect of the sound wave passing over the solids ensure that the saturated boundary layer is kept to a minimum if not completely removed. This application of power ultrasound helps to speed up leaching processes as applied to the removal of excess alumino-silicate contaminants in some ilmenite. There are practical indications that flotation recovery of palladium bismuth tellurides is poor. This work tested whether this can be caused by a lack of interaction of the collector with the telluride. Impedance measurements, voltammetry and Raman spectroscopy were performed to determine the interaction of dithiocarbonate collectors (KEX) with Pd-Bi-Te. Impedance measurements showed lower capacitance values in solutions containing KEX indicating the formation of a continuous surface layer. Anodic and cathodic polarization diagrams show the mixed potential tobe higher than the reversible potential of the xanthate-dixanthogen equilibrium reaction; hence the formation of dixanthogen on the surface is possible. Electrochemically controlled in situ Raman spectroscopy did indicate the presence of bulk diethyl dixanthogen on the surface. Raman spectroscopy has confirmed the co-presence of xanthate with dixanthogen, indicating that xanthate retains its molecular integrity when it adsorbs on the surface of the Pd-Bi-Te. As a result, the mineral surface is expected to be hydrophobic and a lack of collector interaction with the mineral is not the reason for low PGM recoveries experienced. JoughinMr Turgay Gurun, in presenting his paper, indicated that this simulator was no purely theoretical exercise, but that the model had been used in the design of crushing plants of capacities ranging from 3 000 tons per day to 66 000 tons per day, and that recently the design of a plant of capacity of 99 000 tons per day had been studied.The crushing plant simulator was an independent portion of a much more comprehensive simulator for the design of a. complete recovery plant. It would be possible to use each section of this simulator on its own, and simulators would be designed to cover flotation concentrates, cash flow analyses of the entire project, and so on.Each simulator would be backed by a comprehensive data bank. For example, the crushing plant simulator was backed by such a data bank which included the performance and cost data from five manufacturers for an average of 30 items of process and materials handling equipment each. This meant that data preparation involved generally less work than would be required for a manual calculation. On average, data preparation for one run took 30 minutes and three minutes of computer time on an IBM 360/40 completed the run. The model could be valuable as a design tool in that it allowed the designers an opportunity to make a thorough examination of many alternative designs. It was also of value to plant operators as it could be used to predict the consequences of operating decisions.This paper generated much interest and there were numerous questions and contributions, so many, in fact, that the discussion had to be cut short.It was pointed out by Mr K. F. Lane that crushing plants represented a very large capital investment. A plant designed for 40 000 tons per day at 98 per cent efficiency might well in practice be run at 50 000 tons per day at, say, 83 per cent efficiency. He asked how, therefore, their design could be investigated without building economic criteria into the model? The author conceded that this was a tender point. He would have liked to have given facilities for more variability of the metallurgical information. He pointed out, however, that while there was no overdesign for conservatism built into his system, some overdesign was inevitable as the performance characteristics given by the manufacturers were generally conservative. Also, in his system, if lower recovery was allowed for, the system would nut through more tonnage."
