The scope of this project was to research, develop and eventually produce a personal occupational hygiene and safety exposure monitor system to assist in recording and analysing various stress factors that could affect the health, wellness and safety of employees, i.e. that could result in injury or ill health of workers, create stress build-up within individual workers that could negatively affect worker alertness and safety, and, may even result in permanent disability or death. Utilized systems at the time were all reactive, whereas the DOHEMS (Proactive Digital Occupational Hygiene and Safety Exposure Monitoring) System enabled the measurement of exposure (and associated risk) in a proactive manner via real-time exposure and digitized recordings. The idea of the development was to create a unit that is so cost effective, small and light that every worker can use a system on a daily basis. The development will eventually replace current, bulky and expensive monitoring equipment. The device must be a portable battery operated device and monitor the immediate working environment by periodic sampling for vibration, noise, toxic gasses (NO/NOX/CO/VOC, etc.), body temperature and heart rate. The samples must be time and date stamped, utilizing a real-time clock (RTC) synchronized with the closest regional secondary time source and related to synchronized real-time video captured samples. These samples are then recorded onto a rugged non volatile storage device with the capacity to store a vast number of samples covering the entire working shift of eight (8) hours plus. The system has been fitted with a clear visual local alarm indication system, indicating any excessive exposures or stresses, for the worker?s supervisor to respond to. This system allows for a pro-active approach. The system is also a wireless system (to the external environment) so as to not affect the mobility of an employee and flameproof to allow for use in explosive environments. "The impact of high-grade data on resource estimation has been a longstanding topic of interest in the mining industry. Concerns related to possible over-estimation of resources in such cases have led many investigators to develop possible solutions to limit the influence of highgrade data. It is interesting to note that the risk associated with including high-grade data in estimation appears to be one of the most broadly appreciated concepts understood by the general public, and not only professionals in the resource modelling sector. Many consider grade capping or cutting as the primary approach to dealing with high-grade data; however, other methods and potentially better solutions have been proposed for different stages throughout the resource modelling workflow.This paper reviews the various methods that geomodellers have used to mitigate the impact of high-grade data on resource estimation. In particular, the methods are organized into three categories depending on the stage of the estimation workflow when they may be invoked: (1) domain determination; (2) grade capping; and (3) estimation methods and implementation. It will be emphasized in this paper that any treatment of high-grade data should not lead to undue lowering of the estimated grades, and that limiting the influence of high grades by grade capping should be considered as a last resort. A much better approach is related to domain design or invoking a proper estimation methodology. An example data-set from a gold deposit in Ontario, Canada is used to illustrate the impact of controlling high-grade data in each phase of a study. We note that the case study is by no means comprehensive; it is used to illustrate the place of each method and the manner in which it is possible to mitigate the impact of high-grade data at various stages in resource estimation."

High pressure grinding rolls (HPGR) technology has come a long way in its application for comminution duty in hard rock mineral processing in the last three years. Several major projects in copper, nickel, gold, molybdenum, platinum, and iron ore have opted for this technology. Advances in wear abatement technology have established the HPGR as a reliable machine with the required high utilization and availability. The HPGR captures the imagination as the next step change improvement in ore processing, based on the following benefits: ?Energy efficiency (potentially 10?30% more efficient)?very topical in an increasingly ?green? society, and in times of rapidly increasing energy costs and availability concerns. 2008 has shown this to be especially important in Southern Africa ?High (and stable) throughput with a relatively small footprint ?Lower operation cost ?Liberation benefits ?Creative ?mine-to-metal? system improvements made possible by HPGR. The platinum industry, renowned for its historically conservative approach, has not been left behind with two significant new HPGR installations, one in Platreef application and one in UG2 application, commissioned in 2008. While the decision for the Platreef application was driven primarily by comminution circuit capacity and design imperatives, the UG2 application seeks to develop a flowsheet that will have a significant recovery benefit in addition to capacity increase and reduced operating cost. The Platreef application of HPGR also provides the opportunity to introduce a novel comminution flowsheet and to demonstrate exceptionally low wear rates treating very hard, abrasive and variable ore types. The HPGR lends itself for inclusion in existing SABC circuits to increase the capacity of the plant and mills. With current PGM prices many operations are attracted to the HPGR technology benefits. The HPGR clearly has the potential to transform entrenched opinion and provide decision makers with significant alternative comminution options. This paper aims to provide an overview of the current applications and to speculate on the transforming stimulus that the HPGR exerts on industry.

Chlorine-containing minerals are commonly present in coal. Associated minerals such as pyrite can undergo exothermic reactions. Consequently, it is of great significance to study the effect of inorganic chloride on the spontaneous combustion of coal. In this study, the effects of five inorganic chlorides (sodium chloride, magnesium chloride, potassium chloride, calcium chloride, and zinc chloride) on the spontaneous oxidation of coal were investigated. Analysis of the gaseous products of coal oxidization at low temperatures (323K to 453K) showed that the presence of inorganic chlorine in coal markedly decreases O2 consumption and the generation of CO and CO2. Samples of raw coal and chlorine-loaded coal were oxidized for 36 hours under the same experimental conditions. Infrared diffuse reflectance spectroscopy results showed that inorganic chloride can inhibit the oxidative decomposition of some functional structure components (methyl, methylene, methine, and hydroxy) in the coal. The influence of inorganic chloride on the oxidation characteristics of the functional groups in coal during spontaneous combustion was investigated using benzyl alcohol and 1-phenylpropanol as model compounds, which were tested under the same experimental conditions as the coal samples. The oxygen consumption of model compounds with and without the addition of inorganic chloride further suggested that inorganic chloride may hinder the oxygenolysis of these structures during low-temperature oxidation. This phenomenon can be attributed to the radical reaction from the perspective of radical chemistry. It can therefore be concluded that inorganic chlorides play an inhibitory role in the spontaneous combustion of coal.

"Historically, mining companies worldwide provided housing and developed towns to accommodate their employees. At the end of the 1980s this approach became less prevalent and attempts were made to mitigate the effects of mine development and mine closure on communities living near the mines. Permanent settlement in mining towns urgently needed to be minimized. Since the advent of democracy, South African policy has moved in the opposite direction, shifting the emphasis to creating integrated communities and encouraging home ownership. Despite this policy shift, however, mines continue to influence local housing conditions. One direct outcome has been the development of informal settlements. We surveyed 260 informal settlement households in Postmasburg, a small and remotely located town in the Northern Cape Province of South Africa. We found that because they employ contract workers and thus arouse expectations of employment, the mines here contribute extensively to the development of informal settlements. But local factors also contribute, and the functional role of informal settlements as a form of housing that supports mobility should not be underestimated. We also found that both municipal and mining company policies for informal settlements were inadequate. Finally, we found that low-income informal settlers not associated with mine employment suffered the highest levels of social disruption.IntroductionA mine generates demand for labour, which in turn generates demand for housing. When settlements spring up near a mine this often means poor housing conditions. In South Africa in the 1960s and 1970s mining companies invested heavily in company towns or mining settlements, but they have become increasingly hesitant to do so, for three reasons. First, declining resource prices in the mid-1980s and the 1990s compelled them to focus on core business interests and reduce the costs of peripheral activities such as housing (Bryceson and MacKinnon, 2013); second, at the turn of the 20th century they were often accused of taking over the role of local government (IIED, 2002) and consequently became hesitant to invest in developing mining towns; and third, changing labour regimes also curbed their investment in such towns (Haslam McKenzie, 2010). Increasingly, the companies began to endorse block-roster shifts, and outsourcing also became more common in the early 1990s. Block-roster shifts in Australia (together with improved technology) have meant that miners do not need to settle near the mines but can fly in and fly out and have their urban houses as their stable homes. This has had serious negative implications for housing in remote towns in Australia, particularly worker camps, large-scale renting out of available accommodation, and ‘hot-bedding’."

Traditionally, iron ore has been reduced with coke in a blast furnace and the hot-metal product of the blast furnace containing carbon, manganese, silicon, sulphur and phosphorous, was subsequently refined in a steelmaking furnace. During iron making as well as during steelmaking, significant amounts of slag are produced. Two decades ago, more than 13 m tonne of blast furnace slag and 4 m tonne of steelmaking slag per annum were produced in the USA alone. It is, therefore, not surprising that many attempts have been made to re-use iron and steelmaking slags. However, these slags are not merely metallurgical waste products but, on the contrary, their compositions and physical properties are judiciously designed to optimize the operations in the respective metallurgical reactors. The variation in composition and properties of blast furnaces lags are largely determined by the gangue in the ore and ash in the coke and much progress has been made in the re-use of such slag. With respect to steelmaking slag, emphasis has in recent years been placed on hot-metal treatment before refining and ladle treatment after decarburization. The bulk removal of silicon, phosphorous and sulphur from the hot-metal product of the blast furnace by specially designed slags prior to refining in a basic oxygen furnace, has reduced tap-to-tap time, lowered cost and produced steel of much higher quality. The use of synthetic slags in ladle refining techniques subsequent to decarburization in the basic oxygen furnace has resulted in reduced hydrogen and nitrogen contents and reduced solute impurities. Moreover, inclusion shape and composition control, again by the use of specially designed slags has led to the achievement of much improved mechanical properties of the steel. In these revised process routes, slag of different compositions are produced in the variety of unit processes and hence the re-use of steelmaking slags has become much more complex. Clearly, a thorough understanding of the design and use of these different slags is a pre-requisite to the development of re-use strategies. Japanese steelmakers have spearheaded attempts to reduce slag volumes in the individual unit processes and to strive towards ‘slagless steelmaking’ by recycling slags internally. Steelmaking slag volumes have been reduced on commercial scale from about 140 kg/tonne steel to 60kg/tonne steel. Moreover, model predictions have shown that, in principle, all slag can be recycled and the phosphorous extracted to produce fertilizer. This development is of particular significance since the supply of low-phosphorous iron ores is diminishing at an ever increasing rate. Keywords: slag, environment, iron, steel,

The Bushveld Complex is economically significant and strategically important to South Africa, thus it is imperative that optimal extraction of platinum group metal (PGM) resources on the Bushveld Complex is achieved. Optimal extraction broadly requires that the maximum amount of ore is extracted by excavating and hauling the minimum amount of waste in the shortest possible time, at the least cost, and in the safest and most environmentally acceptable manner. In open-pit mine planning this entails among other things, minimizing the waste stripping ratio, whereas in underground mine planning it includes minimizing the metres of waste development. In conventional mining, the main development that is in waste or partly in waste and defines the mining grid pattern includes levels and raises. It was prudent to consider optimizing level and raise spacing in conventional mining because the method is a prevalent mining method on the Bushveld Complex accounting for nearly 70% of platinum production.

Société le Nickel (SLN) exploits the Dôme lateritic nickel orebody at its Tiébaghi operations in New Caledonia. The site geology has an obvious bearing on recovery and metallurgical performance, and the controls are extremely complex at all scales: lithology, oxidation-reduction conditions, mineralogy, and multivariate geochemistry. In that context, establishing an adapted recoverable resource estimation method that is efficient and transparent proves an interesting challenge. The method must address the key notions of: ? Support effect: the exploration data-set can only warrant the estimation of large panels 20×20×3 m3, which are much larger than the selective mining units (SMUs) of 5×5×3 m3 ? Information effect: the selection at production stage uses estimates based on information much denser than that available for mine planning. The problem is rendered more complex in this type of deposit by the fact that the additive variables used for any estimation process (metal accumulation and ore tonnage) are not the ones used to establish the selection at mining stage (i.e. the nickel grade of SMUs, which is the ratio of accumulation on tonnage). Eventually, the selection criteria involve not only Ni grades but also other constituents such as Al2O3, Fe2O3, MgO, and SiO2. The solution presented in this paper is the construction of a platform of SMU multivariate simulations in the saprolitic horizon, together with efficient post-processing aimed at producing the multivariate recoverable resource estimates. The efficiency constraints imposed by the number of blocks to be simulated (1.5 million) lead to resorting to direct block simulations. The underlying multivariate discrete Gaussian model (DGM), the validity of which is tested beforehand, is put to good use to mimic the selection process at the mining stage, by offering the ability to simulate in each block a composite value located at random within the block. Finally, the paper presents the application of a scenario reduction algorithm to pick a representative subset of a few simulations to help appraise the risk attached to the downstream phases (reserve optimization, mine sequencing) of the project. The implementation presented here is for the first generation of the Scenario Reduction plugin built in Isatis software, where measuring the distance between the initial set of scenarios and the reduced set is based on Ni quantities only. Research is under way to adapt the measure to the true multivariate nature of the problem.

The prediction of rock properties from indirect testing methods is important, particularly for preliminary investigations since indirect tests are easier and cheaper than the direct tests. In this study, we investigate the predictability of the uniaxial compressive strength (UCS) and Brazilian tensile strength (BTS) of rocks from the indentation hardness index (IHI) obtained using point load apparatus. Forty-six different rock types, 14 of which were igneous, 15 were metamorphic, and 17 were sedimentary were tested in the laboratory. The UCS and BTS values were correlated with the corresponding IHI values and the results were statistically analysed. The influence of rock classes on the relationships was also investigated. A strong correlation between UCS and IHI was found for all data. The correlation between BTS and IHI is not as strong as the correlation between UCS and IHI, However, it is in the acceptable limits. When the regression analyses were repeated for igneous, metamorphic, and sedimentary rocks, the correlation coefficients were generally increased. The results show the UCS and BTS can be estimated from IHI, In addition, the effect of rock classes on the relationships between IHI and both UCS and BTS is important.

Silver and silver alloys tarnish readily by the formation of tarnish on the surface when exposed to a wide range of sulphur-containing atmospheres. This tarnish is unsightly and undesirable and can be removed either with a silver polish or a chemical dip. Polishes are, however, not suitable for irregular and embossed surfaces such as on coins, medallions and jewellery items, because of uneven removal of the tarnish layer and excessive wear. Successful tarnish protection can be achieved by either storing the items away from the aggressive atmosphere or by coating/treating the exposed surfaces with a protective layer. Storage is feasible for collections but is not suitable for items that are handled or worn regularly, such as jewellery. A number of commercial coatings and treatments have been developed, but to date there has not been a systematic evaluation of tarnish protection. This paper details the performance of a range of generic coatings in an accelerated tarnish test. The degree of tarnish was evaluated by means of loss in reflectivity and change in colour. Four coatings/treatments improved the tarnish resistance of silver by more than tenfold. These include an organic lacquer, rhodium electroplating and an organic self-assembled monolayer (SAM) conversion coating. Research is continuing to optimise these coatings. GIS and multivariate geometric distribution have been used to predict the association of high-level intrusives with hydrothermal alteration related to iron oxide Cu-Au (IOCG) mineralizing systems. Several examples in the Russian northeast are presented in this paper. IOCG ore deposits can have enormous geological resources containing significant reserves of base, precious, and strategic metals, and hence are economically attractive targets for mineral exploration. To date, examples of this type of mineralization have not been reported from the northeastern area of Russia. The Tarinskiy ore cluster, located in Eastern Yakutia, shows brecciated altered rocks with sulphide and iron oxide cement, which is typical for IOCG mineralization of the iron oxide Cu-Au±U type. This cluster was formed near surface and is linked with the Rep- Yuruinskiy pluton. It has potential to host new world-class precious metal deposits in northeastern Russia

"Biological cementation of the Mandena heavy mineral sand deposit in Madagascar was causing difficulty in dredge mining and hence in planning and control of production rates. An investigation was initiated to better evaluate the geotechnical properties of the orebody by defining the distribution and geotechnical properties of the cemented strata, in order to generate a site-specific geotechnical model for the deposit. The geotechnical characterization was developed by an integrated approach using several ground investigation techniques such as piezocone (CPTu) testing, geotechnical drilling, standard penetration testing (SPT), as well as laboratory testing. The final outcomes of the investigation included a 3D geotechnical model showing the distribution and extent of the cemented areas, as well as the typical geotechnical parameter ranges associated with each of the defined geotechnical units. The interpretations developed were incorporated into the mine and production planning to ultimately optimize operational planning and control.IntroductionQIT Madagascar Minerals (QMM) is a heavy mineral sand mining operation at Mandena, near Fort Dauphin in Madagascar. During the final planning and commissioning stages of the project, the need to fully characterize the unusual geotechnical conditions was identified and a geotechnical investigation became necessary.Nature of the problemDuring the commissioning phase it was found that mining production was being hampered by biologically cemented/indurated layers encountered within the sands. Closer inspection of the indurated horizons in the dredging face revealed that these layers contain a high loading of bacteria and fungi. It appears that the bacteria produce an extracellular (outside the cell) polysaccharide (i.e. sugar and carbon salts), which form a gelling biofilm to trap nutrients. There are a number of different bacteria. The fungi, on the other hand, produce a network of fibrous strands that bind the sand grains together. Thus both bacteria and fungi probably contribute to the ‘apparent cohesive’ strength or binding of the indurated sand (Lynn, 2008)."

"This article presents laboratory test work conducted on an African haematite ore to determine the influence of the flotation pulp pH on the final iron grade and recovery. Results show that a combination of an isodecyl ether propylene amine/amino acetate and 1,3-propanediamine, N-(3-(C10-C16-alkyloxy)propyl)-derivatives collector is suitable for separating haematite from quartz. Higher iron grades were obtained at pH levels between neutral and pH 9. This underlines the importance of the surface charge effect of the ore on its flotation characteristics. The results serve as good baseline conditions for further optimization. IntroductionBeneficiation of iron ore by flotation is widely used in Brazil, India and China. In Africa, however, this practice is not yet commercially developed.The aim of this test work is to serve as a starting point by establishing suitable pH conditions for the development of a practically implementable reagent suite, which will then be included in a larger beneficiation circuit for producing high-grade iron ore sinter feed.In the literature, African iron ore types are graded as low-grade (60.0–62.9% Fe; 8.6– 12.5% SiO2 and insolubles), high-grade (66.0– 69.9% Fe; 0.8–4.5% SiO2 and insolubles), and meduim-grade as the remaining portion (Astrup et al., 1998). The low-grade ore used in this work contains less than 60% Fe.For Brazilian ores consisting of a combination of haematite and quartz, it is common to use corn starch as a depressant and ether amine blends as collectors with additional frothing characteristic (Araujo et al., 2005). Work by Turrer and Peres (2010) shows the possibility of using other depressants successfully as well.The main mechanism of the reverse flotation of quartz from iron ore is based on the electrostatic theory of flotation. This is due to the strong pH dependence of the zeta potential of the mineral edge planes on silicate particles (Fuerstenau and Pradip. 2005)."

A new way of producing low-silicon ferrosilicon from iron-ore materials in a new type of aggregate-oxygen reactor is presented. The oxygen reactor process is based on using the calorific combustibility and reducibility of carbon materials inside the aggregate. The key to the process is successful post-combustion of carbon monoxide above a layer of a solid coke bed. Initially the possibility of production of grades of ferrosilicon containing 20 to 25% Si (FeSi20-FeSi25) was studied on a laboratory model of the oxygen reactor. Quartz sand and iron ore concentrates (from Russia and India) were used in the laboratory tests. This test work demonstrated that a ferrosilicon grade FeSi15 could be obtained directly from raw iron ore (containing 75.9 % Fe2O3 and a maximum of 23.8 % SiO2) without using rich iron-ore concentrates. The process was successfully tested on a pilot furnace at Serovsky metallurgical plant. Very promising results and efficiency parameters were achieved. The consumption of materials for 1t of ferrosilicon (15 % Si) production was as follows: 1567 kg raw iron ore, 591 kg of coal (in a composition of ore-coal briquettes), 299 kg of coke (for coke bed formation), and 815 m3 of oxygen.

An analytical framework is formulated to assist mining companies in assessing the relative merits of mineral exploration and acquisition strategies. The anticipated costs, risks, and returns of each strategy are conceptualised using decision trees. Economic criteria - expected net present value, expected return per unit of investment, and the probability of success - for each strategy are derived(from the appropriate decision tree network. Application of the analytical framework is illustrated using the example of a medium-size company in the Canadian base metal sector.

Paper written on project work carried out in partial fulfilment of B. Eng (Metallurgical Engineering) degree This work was done to characterize the leaching of a uranium containing pulp processed by a South African producer to identify parameters that could be adjusted to increase the extraction of uranium in the existing circuit. Batch leach tests were used to characterize the leach properties and especially the influence of the oxidant concentration on the leaching achieved. It was found that relatively high extraction could be obtained even at room temperature by using a high liquid-to-solids ratio and that increasing the oxidant concentration significantly improved the leaching of the uranium minerals.

Iron ore pellet feed pressing has been one of the first and most successful applications of High- Pressure Grinding Rolls (HPGR) in the minerals industry. Vale S.A. has been one of the pioneers in this application, currently with six HPGRs in operation in the pelletising plants of the Complexo de Tubarão (Brazil). In spite of the important advances in the technology, risks still exist when scaling-up the process from small-scale information. The present work takes advantage of the recent advances in the mathematical modelling of the HPGR performance, using the population balance model to evaluate the modified Torres and Casali model prediction in iron ore pellet feed pressing for different scales of operation. Results are presented that compare the HPGR performance in different operational scales for iron ore pellet feed pressing, demonstrating the confidence of this model-based approach for scale-up to full-scale HPGRs used in pressing iron ore concentrates. The leaching of chalcopyrite in ferric sulfate media is notorious for its slow and inhibited kinetics. Different methods have been proposed to improve the kinetics, including the use of organic compounds as additives to the leaching media. In this study, the enhancing effect of methanol, ethanol, 1-propanol, and 2-propanol on the leaching of chalcopyrite in aerated acid ferric sulfate solutions using different reactor systems was investigated. The results revealed a clear improvement of copper dissolution by methanol and 1-propanol relative to tests with no additives under similar conditions. Operating a continuous-flow mini-column reactor yields surprisingly good results, potentially related to the maintaining of a consistent leaching micro-environment on the mineral surface. Scanning electron microscopy studies showed that the alcohols result in the removal of surface deposits formed during the anodic dissolution, potentially thus facilitating improved cathodic reduction of the ferric ion to drive the anodic dissolution.

Gravity-driven rock falls account for a large proportion of all fatalities and injuries in underground mines. Potentially unstable blocks of rock are found in the hanging wall of excavations, which may be delineated by natural joints or stress fractures. These blocks, referred to as keyblocks, will fail if their weight exceeds the support capacity or if they are located between support units. This paper describes a computer program which simulates blocks in the hanging wall of an excavation based on measured properties of fractures and joints. Keyblocks are identified and placed at random locations in a predefined excavation. The keyblocks are tested against the support to determine whether they fail the support, drop out between the support or are stable. By repeating the procedure several thousand times, statistics of the probability of failure of the keyblocks are obtained. This approach allows the relative hazard associated with different types of support or excavation orientations to be obtained. It is concluded that a probabilistic approach is suitable for the evaluation of supports effectiveness in situations where large numbers of discontinuities or stress fractures are exposed in excavations.
