Anisotropy is a characteristic of intact foliated metamorphic rocks (slates, gneisses, phyllites, schists). Testing was used to establish the anisotropic behaviour of selected gneissic rocks. The effect of anisotropy on various mechanical properties (strength, deformation) and dynamic properties (wave velocity) was examined. The rock samples were also tested at successively higher confining pressures in order to evaluate the effect of anisotropic behaviour at high overburden pressures.

Today, mine backfilling has become an integral part of mining operations, both from a local and overall ground control point of view, and as regards mining techniques and environmental considerations. During the past decade, substantial research has been carried out to contribute to the better understanding of the mechanisms involved in mine backfill behaviour. This work involved analytical, experimental and numerical studies at different scales. Accordingly, this work has been aimed at developing backfill design guidelines for actual working conditions. Backfill design for deep mining conditions is complex and requires understanding of various elements. The most important of these elements are: backfill inherent strength parameters, backfill placement method, stope geometry and interaction between backfill and host rock. The mobilization of backfill strength parameters controls the backfill behaviour and thus, its failure mode. It is believed that the governing boundary conditions and backfill-rock interaction influence the backfill strength mobilization significantly. Accordingly, the interaction between backfill and host rock is an influential factor in overall backfill behaviour under applied loads. The focus of this research is to investigate the backfill-rock interaction, considering a nonlinear behaviour for both backfill and rock mass. Assuming typical stope geometry, the FLAC code was used to model the complex boundary condition associated with narrow vein mining conditions and to simulate the backfill behaviour. A comprehensive numerical study was conducted and the results obtained were compared against field observations. The analysis of findings provides qualitative results, which can be used for backfill design. 1. A NEW CONTEXT FOR METAL INDUSTRY Producers and owners of industrial extractive sites are living hard times due to Environmental pressure and liabilities. This is valid whatever the region in the world, it is just a question of time. On one hand, the normative environmental pressure is increasing through more severe regulations and controls on all pollution sources and production materials. [ ] Furthermore, more impurities are extracted and captured, more the volume of the related wastes is increasing. But disposal costs are increasing, disposal areas for wastes are restricted, markets for wastes are limited and technologies for waste treatment are, most of the time, not available. On the other hand, for most of the extractive industries, the costs required to get access to refine primary raw material are killing the profitability of the industry. Definitively, a technological and economical breakthrough is ongoing: extractive industries have to increase their feed from secondary material and to be involved more and more with the recycling business.

Seven full and partial pillar extraction operations were visited in New South Wales, Australia, in the early parts of 2001. Certain factors unique to these operations have led to the general success of the safe and economic extraction of these coal pillars. Some of these factors attributable to the overall success of these operations are discussed in this paper. In particular, geotechnical mapping, specific legislation pertaining to pillar extraction, mining methods, the role of temporary supports and training are described. It is found that some of these factors have useful attributes which could be used to design a methodology for extraction of underground coal pillars in the Witbank and Highveld coalfields of South Africa.

Mining has always been, and still is, an activity which is vital for the development of mankind. This is because a predominant proportion of industrial products and energy is produced from raw materials that are excavated using mining methods. The need for environmental protection and the close proximity of urban settlements and mines in Slovenia have necessitated ever stricter requirements for the excavation of raw materials and the introduction of more environmentally-friendly mining methods. This is achieved by implementing a closed eco-technological cycle of raw material excavation within the scope of mining methods. In surface mines, this means prompt reclamation of the degraded surfaces, and in underground mines the use of methods with minimized impact on the surface and on underground water. In underground mines, mining methods with backfilling installed according to the multi-barrier disposal system are the only ones that allow the possibility of implementing a closed eco-techno-logical cycle of excavating raw materials. Various industrial waste materials are also included in the backfilling material in order to improve its strength properties. Backfilling consisting of several different waste materials is produced in the form of a composite. Before backfilling consisting of waste material composites can even begin to be used in mines, an environmental impact assessment of its suitability for mines needs to be made. In order to make such an assessment, a pressure leaching cell and an open diffusion cell were made, i.e. a pressure leachate test and a sorption test were developed. The two cells and the developed tests will enable the study of the influence of backfilling on the environment if installed in an underground mine. The pressure leachate test performed with the use of the pressure leaching cell simulates leaching from a consolidated backfill during the seeping of underground water into the backfilling material under pressure. The sorption test performed in an open diffusion cell simulates the flow of eluate leached from the backfilling material through the rock/geotechnical barrier. The two tests were developed in such a manner that they are performed either in succession immediately after one another, but they can also be performed separately at a certain time interval. The paper presents an assessment of the suitability of backfilling made of different waste material composites. There have been several high-profile accidents in the South African mining industry where fatigue was identified as either causal or contributory. The risk of fatigue is inherent in any work-time arrangement involving shift work and work that is physically or mentally demanding, repetitive, or requires high vigilance. The management of fatigue is not simply a matter of correct shift scheduling. Amore comprehensive approach is needed. In order to be successful, a fatigue management programme should address the unique needs of the operation in which it will be implemented and should be integrated into normal operations. Fatigue management is a shared responsibility between the organization and its employees, and all stakeholders should participate in order to provide the safest and healthiest working environment possible.

A risk study was carried out at the Cerrejon coal mine in order to assess the impacts of pit slope failure in terms of safety of personnel and destruction of equipment with economic consequences. Results of the assessment enabled the definition of risk treatment requirements and the identification of key aspects to consider in a risk treatment plan. The approach included the following tasks: (1) Assessment of the total probability of failure (POF) representative of the stability conditions of typical footwall and highwall slopes. For this purpose, stability analyses were carried out to define the Design POF, which accounts for the variability of strength parameters and represents the normal conditions considered for slope design. Strength parameters for highwall slope analysis were derived from borehole data obtained with a geotechnical drilling campaign. The Total POF was estimated through the use of Source Response Diagrams (SRD) in order to incorporate other sources of uncertainty not accounted for, like changes in geometry, variability of rock conditions due to geological or operational factors, changes in groundwater conditions and occurrence of seismic events. (2) Assessment of the consequences of footwall and highwall slope failure on safety of personnel. The assessment was performed through the use of event tree analysis to establish the probability of fatality caused by slope failures, from the Total POF defined in the previous task. This analysis required the evaluation of personal exposure to slope failures. Also, the assessment included benchmarking of acceptability criteria in terms of probability of fatality and the evaluation of options of risk mitigation to comply with these criteria. (3) Assessment of the consequences of footwall and highwall slope failure in terms of economic losses associated with impact on equipment. The analysis included the evaluation of equipment exposure to slope failures, and it was performed through event tree analysis to establish the probability of an economic loss associated to total or partial lost of equipment, from the total POF value defined in the first task. The magnitude of the economic losses was estimated from the costs of damaged equipment, lost production and site restoration. Options of risk mitigation were also examined in terms of economic losses. The risk assessment process applied to the Cerrejón mine showed how the system can be applied to evaluate the consequences of failure in terms of personnel safety and economics and to identify the more adequate risk mitigation options. The system can be an extremely powerful tool in the mine design process and provides the opportunity to rationalize the geotechnical information requirements, once the risk criteria have been defined by management. The main purpose of this paper is to present the process; therefore, the emphasis has been put on the methodology followed rather than on the actual results obtained.

The corrosion behaviour of a high-quality rebonded magnesia-chromite refractory in contact with a vacuum oxygen decarburization (VOD) slag with high Al2O3content (15?20 mass per cent) is investigated under VOD process conditions by rotating finger tests in a vacuum induction furnace. The refractory degradation mechanisms are studied by the characterization of corroded microstructures using scanning electron microscopy, equipped with energy dispersive spectroscopy. Hercules? is a low nickel austenitic stainless steel developed at Mintek that has a typical composition of 9 wt% Mn, 0.05 wt% C, 2wt% Ni, 0.25 wt% N and 16.5 wt% Cr. A more corrosion resistant version of Hercules? (Hercules? B) with 0.5 wt% Mo has also been developed. Potentiodynamic tests performed on Hercules? B in a 5wt% sulphuric acid solution showed it to have improved corrosion resistance comparable to that of AISI 304. The effect of a varying Mn content on the corrosion resistance of Hercules? B has also been investigated and the results discussed in this paper. From the corrosion test results, it is clear that decreasing the Mn content of Hercules? B increased the corrosion rate, while increasing it decreased the corrosion rate. This paper provides a review of the chemical reactions occurring in the submerged arc processing of chromite ores. The excavations of industrial furnaces have shown that the charge, as it descends through the furnace, passes through a number of distinct reaction zones. Each zone is characterised by differing process conditions and reaction products. The phase equilibria, reaction steps and mechanisms occurring as the charge progresses through the furnace are examined, and the potential influences of these factors on the process outcomes are discussed.

"In deep excavations under conditions of high ground stress, even hard rock undergoes creep and other time-dependent effects that may result in instability. This study involves an analysis of the typical damage to the surrounding rock in the deep tunnels of the Jinchuan nickel mine in China. In order to understand the creep mechanism, triaxial creep laboratory tests were conducted under high stress. The creep characteristic curves and the Nishihara model parameters of typical rock were obtained from these tests. The numerical simulations, with which the creep model is developed, were performed using Flac3D. The creep model parameters were back-analysed on the basis of field monitoring data. Finally, appropriate support schemes for deep tunnels are suggested. The creep deformation of rock increases with time and axial load. At the same load level, the creep deformation of unloading is greater than that of loading. The simulated deformations of the surrounding rock are coincident with those from in situ monitoring, indicating the applicability of the presented rock creep model in situations of high ground stress. The results constitute a reference for support design in deep mining tunnels.IntroductionThe excavation of underground caverns can alter the natural stress field of the surrounding rock. In deep engineering projects under conditions of high ground stress, even hard rock shows obvious creep properties and time effects (Yao, 2005; Liu, 1994). The time effect of excavation not only causes decompression of the floor and increases sidewall stress, but also leads to stress concentration at the corners of the excavation, which influences the stability of the surrounding rock in a very complex manner.Many researchers have studied the creep properties of rock. ‘Griggs (1939) showed that creep occurs in sandstone, shale, and silty sandstone rock under the load of 12.5%–80% of the failure load.’ Subsequently, much research has been published on rock creep tests, including the uniaxial compressive creep test, the triaxial compressive creep test, the discontinuity rock shearing test, and field tests (Wawersik, 1974; Amadei et al., 1980; Okubo et al., 1991; Jin et al.,1995). A rheological model is used to describe the complex rheological deformation of material. This model is based on various fundamental parameters including rock elasticity, plasticity, and viscous properties, which can be combined into a constitutive model to reflect the rheological properties of various types of rocks. Wang et al. (2014) studied the creep– damage–rupture characteristics of rock salt by applying a creep-damage model. Munson (1997) developed a multi-mechanism constitutive model of creep of polycrystalline rock salt based on steady-state creep and modified it to incorporate transient creep through work hardening and recovery. An elasto-viscoplastic approach was developed to simulate the timedependent nature of the fracture zone (Malan, 1999). Rheological models were proposed to understand the collapse of iron ore mines in Lorraine by Dragan et al. (2003)."

Scientific and technical research is becoming an expensive business, and needs to be managed as well as directed. Regardless of whether it operates under public or private auspices, a research-and development organization should not tolerate inefficiency or irrelevance. Its true worth is ultimately decided by the impact it makes on its environment. Doing the right things is preferable to merely doing things in the right way. Clear definition and the setting of goals form the crux of the Management by Objectives (MBO) system. This system provides the research establishment with a profound sense of purpose and direction, which is essential for effective planning and control. Performance standards, in association with costs and manpower, value assessment, feedback, and improvement, tend to follow naturally once the principle of a results-oriented management system is adopted. MBO is a participative management system, leading to decentralization and self-control of the individual rather than imposed control. If wisely implemented with the necessary respect for creative work, it can enhance the job satisfaction of the research worker as well as the overall productivity ofthe research establishment.

This paper deals with the influence from blast induced stress waves on the performance of shotcrete support in the Kiirunavaara mine. Time histories of stress waves from blasting were obtained from measurements during production blasts in the mine, followed by failure mapping. A finite element model, consisting of beam and spring elements, was used to calculate the shotcrete response to vibrations from blasting. The modelling approach was similar to that of a building during an earthquake, with accelerations measured in-situ used as loads. The analysis showed that the calculated adhesive stresses exceeded the strength in the interface between rock and shotcrete near to the blasted ring. It also indicated that tensile rock failure did occur. These types of failure will presumably result in ejection of joint defined rock blocks or rock slabs and will require a ductile support, such as fibre reinforced shotcrete. The predicted failure was confirmed by the mapping, which also showed that the zone of failed shotcrete was much larger in areas with plain shotcrete compared to areas with reinforced shotcrete. L’influence de l’onde de pression générée par les sautages à la mine de fer de Kiruna sur la performance du béton projeté est étudiée dans le présent article. Les ondes créées par les sautages ont été enregistrées et les domages résultants ont été cartographiés. La réponse du béton projeté aux vibrations de sautage est étudiée à l’aide d’un modèle d’éléments finis, constitué de poutres et de ressorts. L’approche est similaire à celle d’un immeuble subissant un tremblement de terre, avec les accélérations internes utilisées comme charges. L’analyse montre qu’à proximité des sautages, la contrainte adhésive dépasse la résistance de l’interface roche-béton. L’analyse confirme aussi l’existence de ruptures en tension. Ces types de rupture induisent probablement l’éjection des blocks définis par les structures du massif rocheux et requierent un support ductil, comme du béton projeté renforcé par exemple. Le type de rupture est confirmé par les observations de terrain, qui montrent aussi une extension plus importante des domages lorsque le béton projeté n’est pas renforcé. In diesem Konferenzbeitrag geht es um den Einfluss, der aus einer Sprengung hervorgerufenen Schwingungswellen auf die Ausführung der Spritzbetonverstärkung in dem Kiirunavaara Bergwerk. Die Aufzeichnungen der Schwingungswellen von Sprengungen gemäß einer Fehlerkartierung beziehen sich auf Messungen, die während der Sprengungen durchgeführt wurden. Ein Finite Elemente Modell, bestehend aus Stab- und Federelementen, wurde für die Berechnung der Spritzbetondeformation in Bezug auf die Schwingungen aus Sprengungen angewendet. Die Modellierungsmethode war ähnlich der eines Gebäudes während eines Erdbebens anhand der gemessenen Beschleunigungen vor Ort, die als Lasten benutzt wurden. Die Untersuchung hat gezeigt, dass die berechnete Haftspannung größer war als die Festigkeit in der Verbindung zwischen Gestein und Spritzbeton in der Nähe des Sprengungscentrums. Die Analyse hat gezeigt, dass die Zugfestigkeit des Gesteins versagte. Diese Arten von Versagen werden als Folge der Herausnahme von Gesteinsbrocken oder Gesteinsplatten erklärt und benötigen eine faserverstärkte Spritzbeton. Das vorausgesagte Versagen bestätigte sich beim Kartieren, welches auch zeigte, dass die Zone des versagenden Spritzbetons in Bereichen mit unverstärktem Spritzbeton viel größer war als in Bereichen mit armierten Spritzbeton.

To study the preparation process of an earthquake, we should get closer to the hypocentre. In co-operation with ISS International, we had an experimental field (~200 m x~200 m) without dykes and faults in a South African deep gold mine. We have monitored more than 20,000 seismic events (M<2) with borehole tri-axial accelerometers. We used a data acquisition system with 15 kHz sampling and 120-dB dynamic range. In a remnant area at a distance of 100?200 m, an earthquake sequence associated with an M~2 event occurred. Significant changes in seismic parameters such as stress drop, b-value, energy index were observed associated with the sequence. We installed Ishii?s borehole strain meters and could monitor as large a strain change as 10-4associated with mining. However, sampling was only 4 times per hour and 12 bit A/D. A distance from the M2 sequence was ~100 m, being not close enough. Therefore, we found another field with several crosscut tunnels excavated across a fault where an M=2-3 event is expected. We installed the strain meter within several metres of the fault to monitor both shear and normal strains on the fault. The strains are continuously digitized with a 24-bit 25-Hz A/D conversion. The Earth Tide (10-8)is clearly detected. Seismicity induced by longwall mining can be compared to earthquake swarm induced by fluid intrusion to vertical dykes. We also found a decrease in energy index in the source area of M>5events a few days before the major events. An equilibrium study was carried out at 1873 K to ascertain the effect of carbon in CaO-SiO2-Al2O3-MgO-MnO-FetO slag systems on their FetO and MnO activity coefficients, representing the slag?s thermodynamic potential for steel reoxidation. Both ?FetOand ?MnO showed not only a sharp increment, but also a simultaneous slow decrement by increasing carbon content in slag, suggesting opposite roles of the carbon according to its stable forms. XPS (X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy) was introduced to clarify the stable forms of carbon in slag. XPS results prove that carbon dissolves in slag as carbonate, and carbide ions under oxidizing and reducing atmospheres, respectively. It was concluded that carbonate ions increase ?FetOand ?MnO, and that carbide decreases them. This paper suggests an application method of the present results to actual ladle refining processes, in order to enhance steel cleanliness without decreasing (FetO + MnO) content in slag. This paper provides an overview of the current developments towards a new National Curriculum in South African Schools and highlights areas in which the Minerals Industry might provide input into this process.

Ground control problems in the form of large dome or wedge collapses have been experienced at Tau Lekoa Mine since production began. Crush pillars in various configurations have been used and through a process of trial and error the current pillar layout has been derived. A strike pillar layout is used and additional mid-panel pillars are left spaced a maximum of 10m or 16m apart, depending on conditions and mining direction. Pillar spacing is based on an empirical relationship between fallout height and pillar spans. Analysis of the spatial distribution of large falls of ground indicates that there may be several geotechnical relationships contributing to stable pillar spans. The current focus is to define the relationship between geotechnical areas and hangingwall stability so that area specific support strategies can be formulated that could result in increased production efficiencies. Depuis le début de la production, la mine Tau Lekoa a connu des problèmes de contrôle au sol, sous la forme d’effondrements de grands dômes ou coins. Des piliers d’écrasement, dans des configurations variées, ont été utilisés et une série d’essais a résulté en la disposition de piliers en cours. Une configuration de piliers de direction est utilisée, et des piliers mi-panneau supplémentaires sont laissés, espacés d’un maximum de 10m ou 16m, selon les conditions et la direction de la mine. L’espacement des piliers est établi sur une relation empirique entre la hauteur des retombées et les intervalles entre piliers. L’analyse de la distribution spatiale de grandes tombées de terrain indique qu’il peut y avoir plusieurs relations géotechniques qui contribuent à des intervalles de piliers stables. L’intérêt présent est de définir la relation entre les zones géotechniques et la stabilité du toit, pour pouvoir formuler des stratégies de support spécifiques à un endroit, ce qui entraînerait des accroissements de production. Ein Layout für Strukturpfeiler wird verwendet und zusätzliche mittig situierte Pfeiler in einem Maximalabstand von 10m bis 16m installiert, abhängig von den Konditionen und der Vortriebsrichtung.Der Pfeilerabstand basiert auf dem empirischen Verhältnis Fallhöhe und Pfeilerspannweite. Die Analyse der räumlichen Verteilung großer Bodenabsenkungen deutet an, daß es einige geotechnische Verhältnisse geben kann, die zu stabilen Pfostenspannweiten beitragen. Der gegenwärtige Fokus soll das Verhältnis zwischen geotechnischen Bereichen und Stollendeckenstabilität definieren, damit bereichspezifische Unterstützungsstrategien formuliert werden können, welche in erhöhter Produktionsleistung resultieren könnten.

Ten Council meetings were held during the year with an average attendance of seventeen and the standing committees held 45 meetings. FINANCE The annual accounts, which are attached to this report, show an excess of expenditure over income of R4,608 compared with R2,124 last year. This deterioration can be attributed largely to two important factors, namely an increase in secretarial fees of RI, 789 and an increase in the loss on the Journal from R2,343 to R3,508. In addition, our contribution to the expenses of the Federation of Societies of Professional Engineers increased by R607 from R549 to R1,156. The increase in secretarial fees is partly due to our increased demand for services and partly to increased salaries. In order to maintain its essential services it has been necessary for the A.S. & T.S. to increase salaries in order to keep pace with commerce and industry. With regard to the Journal, we did not expect immediate dramatic results from the changes that were effected as from the beginning of last year in the arrangements for publication. However, the improvement has been even slower in materialising than we expected. This situation is being watched carefully and we will not hesitate to make further changes if necessary. It became clear early in the year that the financial position was deteriorating and your Council decided that it was essential to meet the situation by raising subscriptions and entrance fees. At the same time it was decided that there are no grounds for a distinction between Town and Country members and that in future the scale for the compounding of subscriptions should be based on anticipated future membership, rather than past membership. These changes have had only a minor effect on the accounts under consideration. The MacArthur Forrest Memorial Fund shows an excess of income over expenditure of R132 and the total fund was, therefore, increased by this amount to R4,338. The balance sheet shows that the market value of quoted shares and debentures decreased during the year from R13,059 to R6,567, while accumulated funds now amount to R17,959 compared with R22,567 last year. It will also be noted that we are holding R25,844 on behalf of the Symposium on Opencast Mining. MEMBERSHIP Twenty-eight Fellows, twenty-four Members, seventeen Graduates, twenty-five Associates and twenty-seven Students were elected during the year. MEMBERSHIP DRIVE A committee was established to organise a drive for membership as it was felt that there are numbers of persons in our mining and metallurgical industries who are not yet members but who qualify for membership. Members of the committee were allocated responsibility for campaigning in sections of industry and for publicising the aims, objectives and advantages of belonging to the Institute.

The Colloquium on &apos;Recent Mining and Metallurgical Developments in the Orange Free State&apos; was held at the Civic Centre in Welkom on the 4th and 5th May, 1983. The Chairman of the Orange Free StatejKlerksdorp Branch of the Institute and Acting General Manager of Unisel Gold Mining Company, Mr D. A. Parfitt, opened the proceedings, and Professor A. N. Brown gave the welcoming address. Mechanization of mining The South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy is to hold a one-day colloquium on &apos;Developments in the Mechanization of Mining Operations&apos; during September 1984. Surfac,e mining and quarrying The Second International Surface Mining and Quarrying Symposium is being organized by The Institution of Mining and Metallurgy in association with the Institute of Quarrying.

A study was made of the smelting process in two experimental furnaces patterned on Iron Age furnaces excavated at Melville Koppies Nature Reserve, Johannesburg. In a number of smelting experiments, the influences of air supply, temperature, time of operation, fuel consumption, and other operational factors were investigated. Metallurgical and metallographic aspects of the furnace operation and smelting products are discussed, and the experiments are compared with similar research work conducted in Europe and Africa.
