This paper reviews the sources, production, and technology of gold in South Africa. First of al it details the geographical distribution of gold-bearing materials, together with the mineralogy and distribution of gold within those materials. It goes on to the geological origins, and to the discovery and early exploitation, of the gold deposits. The laws relating to the mining and disposal of the metal are explained, after which an outline is given of gold exploration, processing, and refining. The economics of gold production are discussed briefly, and it is concluded that, although present expertise in the financial and technological aspects of a gold-mining venture have largely reduced the risks involved, one severe risk remains: that the rate of cost inflation will not be matched by the rate of escalation in the gold price.

The extent of ground movements and stress concentrations in the vicinity of the reef in the deep mine-shafts used in the South 4frican gold-mining industry have led to the requirement that special tower structures be developed to span the reef intersection zone in several new shafts. So that structural engineers are able to design these towers, it is necessary to model the dynamic behavior of conveyances traversing them in some way, to provide a means to determine the magnitude of the forces generated. This paper describes the development of two such procedures. The first is a numerical method, utilizing a step by- step integration technique to track the motion of a conveyance through a tower. This technique has been implemented in a computer program, and some results are given.

This paper describes the economics of backfilling, hydro-power, and mechanization when they are combined in an integrated stoping system. These three technologies have been shown to be viable, and the mines of the Gold Fields Group are introducing backfilling where the depths exceed approximately 2000 m below surface and in other highly stressed areas. addition, a number of mines are installing hydro-powered systems, and the first trackless stope within the Group may soon be a reality. The main emphasis in the paper is placed on the quantifiable effects of trackless stoping, including a basic risk analysis by use of a spreadsheet model. It is concluded that a substantial decrease in working costs and an increase in revenue are possible, resulting in a marked increase in working profit.

Strategic mine planning is concerned with the decisions that determine the value of the business, while tactical planning deals with the tasks to realize that value. When tasked with formulating a strategic mine plan, the mining engineer often turns to commercially available software. However, these software packages have limited applicability to the RBM situation. Adopting a simpler, back to basics approach founded on a deep understanding of the economics of the orebody has the advantage of providing a clear logic to guide tactical planning. By creating a coherency between strategic mine planning, and tactical planning the likelihood of successfully executing the plans and attaining the value promised by the strategic plan is increased. This paper describes the reasons why RBM embarked on a strategic mine planning process, the rationale of choosing the process, and the process itself.

ABSTRACT: Stiffness controlled test procedures performed with servo-controlled shear systems are the most versatile for simulating the wide range of boundary conditions expected in nature. Examples of a function controlled procedure in addition to dilatation controlled procedures are discussed for different characteristic behaviours. ZUSAMMENFASSUNG: Steifigkeitskontrollierte Scherversuche mit servohydraulischer Steuerung eignen sich gut unterschiedliche Bettungen, wie auch in der Natur vorkommen, zu simulieren. Beispiele für spezielle Steuerungsfunktionen und dilatationsgesteuerte Prozeduren mit verschiedenen charakteristischen Eigenschaften werden diskutiert. RESUMÉ: La rigidité a commandé des méthodes d'essai exécutées avec les systèmes asservis de cisaillement sont la plus souple pour simuler l'éventail d'états de frontière prévus en nature. Water is a valuable and in many areas a scarce resource. Governmental legislation regulates the environmental impact of water usage and wastewater disposal through the issue of licenses. These requirements mean that hydrometallurgical refineries must ensure that water consumption and water disposal is managed on a continuous basis in order to prevent the repeal of their operating license. Water balances are often overlooked during the design of a hydrometallurgical refinery. Recent changes in environmental legislation have forced both design engineers and operational management to review water use and disposal within these processes. Unlike concentrators where water can easily be recovered by recycling from tailing dams, water introduced into hydrometallurgical refineries becomes contaminated with soluble metals and thus requires pre-treatment prior to disposal. This paper discusses the various concerns that need to be considered during design and operation of hydrometallurgical refineries with respect to the water balance.

Despite its growth over the years, necessitating ever¬larger office accommodation, the Gold Fields group changed its head office address in Johannesburg only twice in 94 years. The first move was at the turn of the century, from the then select suburb of Doornfontein to the corner of Fox and Simmonds Streets. The second move was in the thirties, from that address-now the Reserve Bank building-to the well-known address of 75 Fox Street. With the advent of the first mines of the West Wits Line by the end of the thirties, 75 Fox Street proved too small, and the eastern section of the Commissioner Street side of the present head office was added on. In the fifties, when space once more became a serious problem, the old Exploration building was purchased and demolished, and the present west wing on Commissioner Street was built on the site. In the early seventies, cramped conditions again made life difficult and, despite a reorganization of the interior layouts, the need for expansion remained critical. Two employees of a gold mine on the West Rand risked their lives in saving four colleagues from being gassed underground in the mine, and were awarded one of the mining industry's highest honours, the Award for Outstanding Bravery. The improved design of support systems and stoping strategies when changes in depth, stratigraphy, or mine layouts are considered must rely on the designer's fundamental understanding of the deformation mechanisms adjacent to underground openings so that he can extrapolate and predict expected mining conditions. This paper presents a numerical approach to the modeling of the growth and interaction of mining-induced fractures near the edges of deep tabular excavations in brittle rock. Fractures are represented by displacement-discontinuity elements that are allowed to propagate according to prescribed growth rules. This procedure is justified by the reproduction of several features observed in laboratory simulations of fracturing around openings in blocks of rock subjected to uniaxial and biaxial compression. An attempt is then made to explain some of the attributes of the fracture zone surrounding tabular stopes. Particular questions of interest are the sequence in which fractures form and are mobilized in front of the mining face, the effect of parting planes parallel to the plane of the excavation, and the distribution of stress parallel to the hangingwall and footwall.

Ground water and associated pore pressure represent elements which can have a negative impact on surface mining and slope stability. Ground water flow and deformation within a slope influence each other. An increase in pore pressure will result in a decrease of effective stress; and conversely if the pore pressure decreases, the effective stress increases. Slope analysis and slope design calculations require good information on pore pressure distribution around an open pit excavation. Until recently very little pore pressure data was available and assumptions had to be used. Location and design of measuring points depend on geological and structural setting, geotechnical domains and practicality. Good planning and the use of sensitive point piezometers to measure in situ pore pressures means that real-time data can be collected and used for the construction of flow nets, the determination of pore pressure distribution around an open pit mine, the validation of the dewatering/depressurization requirements, the calculation of the efficiency of the dewatering system and finally the use of pore pressure data in slope stability analysis. The recommended layout for a monitoring system, types and design of piezometers, data collection and use of the pore pressure data are presented.
