Abstract: In this paper both continuous and discontinuous modelling are utilised in order to analyze the stability of the Gjøvik Olympic Mountain Hall. The large span cavern (62 m) was built for the 1994 Winter Olympic Games at Lillehammer, and is a unique case study because of the large amount of available input data, through a comprehensive pre-investigation, stress and deformation monitoring program before, during and after the excavation. Phase2, a two-dimensional non-linear finite element program, and the Discontinuous Deformation Analysis (DDA) are used as representative tools for continuous and discontinuous modelling, respectively. The analysis results are compared and discussed taking the reliability of the models, time-consumption and costs into consideration. Some guidelines for the total modelling process, from field measurements to final results, are also presented. Zusammenfassung: In diesem Artikel werden sowohl kontinuierlich als auch diskontinuierlich Modellierung verwendet, um die Stabilität, der in den Berg gebauten Olympiahalle in Gjøvik zu analysieren. Die Olympiahalle wurde 1994 zu den Olympische Spielen in Lillehammer errichtet. Ihr Dach erstreckt sich über eine Breite von zweiundsechzig Meter. Für den Bau wurden umfangreiche Daten durch Voruntersuchungen, und Überwachung von Gebirgsspannungen und Deformationen bevor, während und nach Exkavation eingesammelt. Auf Grund dieser großen Datenmenge stellt die Olympiahalle ein herausragendes Beispiel für den Bau ähnlicher Projekte dar. Für die kontinuierlichen Modellierungen wurde „Phase2“, ein zwei-dimensionales, nicht lineares „endlich Element“ Rechnerprogramm angewandt. Die diskontinuierlichen Modellierungen erstellte man mit Hilfe von der „Diskontinuierliche Deformations Analyse“ (DDA). Die Analysenergebnisse sind mit Rücksicht auf die Zuverlässigkeit der Modelle, Zeitverbrauch und Kosten verglichen und diskutiert worden. Im Artikel werden Richtlinien für den Modellierungsprozess von Dateneinsammlung bis Schlussfolgerung gegeben. Résumé: Dans cet article la modélisation continue et discontinue sont utilisés pour analyser la stabilité de Gjøvik Olympic Mountain Hall. Cette caverne de grande portée (62 m) a été construite pour les Jeux Olympiques d’Hiver de 1994 à Lillehammer, et est une étude de cas unique grâce à la grande quantité de données disponibles, de par un programme de pré-investigation compréhensive, monitorage des contraintes et déformations avant, pendant et après l'excavation. Phase2, un code d’éléments finis non linéaire à deux dimensions, et l’Analyse en Déformations Discontinues (DDA) sont utilisés comme outils représentatifs de la modélisation continue et discontinue, respectivement. Les résultats d'analyses sont comparés et sont discutés, prenant en compte la fiabilité des modèles, la consommation en temps de calcul et les coûts. Quelques indications pour le procédé total de modélisation, des mesures sur place aux résultats finaux, sont aussi présentées.

The latest Draft MPRRB was released for public comment in October 2006. The main purpose of the Bill is to collect royalties at mines developed in terms of new-order mineral rights granted through the MPRDA process. The transition phase stipulated in the MPRDA will be completed by 1 May 2009, on which date mineral royalties will become payable to the state. The royalty rates stated in the MPRRB differ from mineral to mineral and also depend on the degree of refinement. Gold is the subject of this paper, where the royalty rate ranges from 1.5% (for refined gold) to 3% (for unrefined gold) of sales revenue. This royalty is payable regardless of profit, with a maximum 75% relief for loss-making mines. The purpose of this paper is to establish whether or not it would be necessary for gold mines to adjust their mineral reserve statements as a result of this Bill. The methodology is to add the royalty costs stipulated in the MPRRB to the actual quarterly information for the past ten years as reported by the gold-mine members of the COM. The rationale is to investigate the impact this Bill (in its current form) would have had on gold reserves that must be left unmined in the ground because of a higher pay limit. The results of the study point to a significant impact on reserves available for mining with the subsequent shortening of mine lives and retrenchment of workers. Had the MPRRB been effective for the 10 years prior to 1996, it would have resulted in 46 tonnes of gold being sterilised. Stated alternatively, 30 700 workers at COM gold mines alone would have lost their livelihoods.

(Witwatersrand) (Visitor) The effects of stress on the directions of cracks that are propagating in a brittle medium are described. It is shown that the superimposition of stress fields from the holes of an array always adversely affects fragmentation. Consequently, the best fragmentation will result when holes are fired far enough apart in space or time for each to develop its whole crack pattern without disturbance from the others. This concept leads to a philosophy for the design of more effective blasting patterns, which has been verified on model scale and which explains many published, empirical results.

A brief review of Computational Thermodynamics software concerning the modeling and prediction of reactions involving metals, slags and fluxes is presented. Their application for various steelmaking treatments is discussed. Examples concern phosphorus removal in BOF and EAF, ladle steel desulfurization, and specific treatments for inclusions control in semi-killed or Al-killed carbon and stainless steels.

Discus¬sion during this session was thus largely concerned, directly or indirectly, with communication between computing and mining personnel, and as such was relevant to the symposium as a whole.Mr A. Weiss set the tone of this discussion by referring to `user-orientated systems'. He congratulated Mr Burne in this regard, pointing out that his long-term production scheduling program, as a computer system, was similar in approach to the manual system it replaced, and was therefore easily understood by planning engineers. He asked whether the schedule engineer had his 'hands on' the system, to which Mr Burne replied that the engineer did in fact spend several days running alternative schemes through the computer. Mr Weiss commented on the advantage of having terminals on site for this sort of engineer-computer interaction. He also commented on the flexibility of Mr Burne's approach to scheduling and how preferable this was to a one-step optimization package. This was brought home by a question from Mr H. D. Small: Mr Burne's program sometimes found it necessary to temporarily halt an advancing face, and he asked whether the logic of the program could be altered to avoid this (e.g. by suitably slowing down the rate of face advance). Mr Burne replied that it was in fact easier for the planning engineer to sort this problem out manually. The way in which the computer results were presented made it particularly simple for the production engineer to see how to avoid or remedy a stopped face.On the technical side, both Mr Weiss and Mr H. M. Wells questioned Mr Burne on the handling of grade control by his program. From answers by Mr Burne and his colleague Mr K. H. Thomson it emerged that a spot-check on grade every now and then was all that was necessary at Mufulira, and that the idea of actual grade control was more a question of short-term than of long-term planning."

This paper details the recent trends in slag-related research from 1999 to 2003. The trends in thefollowing are outlined: • Annual publication rate • Geographical origin of the work • Nature of the research (e.g. thermodynamics, kinetics) • Nature of the slag studied. This study has revealed that slag research in the USA and Europe has decreased to about a half over the last 20 years and that there has been a significant decrease in Japanese research in this area in recent years. However, these decreases have been offset by significant increases in Chinese and Korean research activity. There has been a significant increase in the amount of work carried out on the recycling and environmental aspects of slags in recent years.

Longwall shearers usually suffer from excessive pick and pickholder consumptions and severe wear of the back plate of the clearance ring section of shearer drums. In practice, most of the drums were seen to be withdrawn from the face due to the abovementioned problems, while vane picks and their holders were intact due to the improper lacing design of the clearance ring picks. However, few underground investigations and their results on the effect of lacing arrangement of clearance picks on the service life of shearer drums have been published. Nevertheless, the pick consumption characteristics of shearer drums were not investigated in detail, since these are fewer pick consumptions with shearers when compared to roadheaders. This paper is concerned with the comprehensive in situ trials on the effect of lacing of clearance ring picks on the lifespan of shearer drums, and the pick consumption characteristics of longwall shearers at Cayirhan Coal Mine in Turkey. The lifespan of shearer drums employed with shearers in this mine increased 70 per cent, while the consumption rate of clearance ring picks decreased threefold through using an alternative lacing for clearance picks, indicating the significance of utilizing proper design techniques for clearance ring picks for the service life of shearer drums. Statistical analyses carried out, using the raw pick consumption data, implied that the clearance ring picks experienced much higher loads than vane picks, revealing that special attention must be paid to designing clearance ring picks. An average maximum consumption value of 41 was determined for clearance ring picks, with corner-cutting picks having the most replacements, while it was 35 for vane picks, on three-day based pick replacements.

A study was carried out to evaluate various batch flotation models for the recovery of minerals in a UG2 platinum ore. The major minerals in a UG2ore can be grouped as platinum group minerals, chromite, and siliceous gangue. This study also examined the entrainment of minerals during flotation. The models were ranked using statistical methods and an analysis of model-fit residuals. Entrainment parameters obtained from model fitting were evaluated for logic using a simple mineral-to-water ratio versus time plot. The foremost conclusion from the study was the importance of entrainment modelling. The measurement of water recovery increased the size of the data-set, and the inclusion of a simple entrainment model was statistically significant. The overall fit to the data was improved, and the entrainment model provided logical information on the recovery of gangue minerals that were not considered to be floatable.

The extraction of iron and lead from their oxides with a volatile organic ligand such as acetylacetone in the gas phase offers potential advantages of lower energy consumption, recycling of the extractant, recovery of pure metals, and a reduced environmental impact compared with conventional extraction processes. The influence of reaction temperature, ligand flow rate, and metal oxide levels on the extraction and rates of reaction of iron and lead from single metal oxide (synthetic haematite (Fe2O3) and synthetic massicot (PbO)) systems in a fluidized bed was studied. It was found that at the investigated acetylacetone flow rates, the influence of mass transfer was limited, but that the reaction suffered from reactant starvation. When the metal load increased the effect of starvation on the rate of reaction also increased. The reaction kinetics increased with an increase in temperature for both systems. At low metal oxide concentrations more that 80 per cent of the iron and lead could be extracted from their respective metal oxides after only four hours.

The results of over 900 coal strength tests done during the period 1993?1994 for the SIMRAC project COL021A were re-analysed with a view to find a method to delineate areas or seams that can be grouped together for analyses of coal strength and strength decay characteristics. It was confirmed that the strength of a coal specimen increases linearly with increasing diameter-to-length ratio and decreases exponentially with increasing size of specimen. However, by extrapolation of the data, it was shown that beyond a diameter of approximately 2 m, the size effect is insignificant. For larger specimens, the diameter-to-length ratio (referred to as the width-to-height ratio for full scale mine pillars) alone continues to influence the strength. The slope of the linear strength vs. diameter-to-length ratio relationship is independent of the size of the specimen and is not unique for coals from different mines. However, the intercept of that relationship is unique and is a function of specimen size. This offers a previously unknown method to distinguish between the coals from different mining areas and coal seams. Interest in early gangue rejection has grown substantially in the minerals industry to reduce energy and water consumption arising from excessive comminution. Recent developments in coarse-particle flotation have proven successful by promoting a quiescent hydrodynamic environment to limit particlebubble detachment and by helping to convey more buoyant particles to the overflow. Current approaches also benefit from upstream classification to remove the finer particles ahead of the coarse-particle flotation. In this study, coarse-particle flotation was investigated experimentally using a novel hybrid gravity-flotation system called CoarseAIR™ that exploits the hydrodynamic advantages of the Reflux® Classifier. The system consists of a lower fluidised bed housing, with a system of inclined channels above. The inclined channels enhance the segregation and hence rejection of intermediate through to relatively coarse particles containing little or no surface liberation. This approach overcomes the need for pre-classification, while offering strong transport of coarse particles made buoyant through their attachment to air bubbles. The paper explores the strong relationship between the solids transport to the overflow and the input gas flux, showing firstly the potential for significant mass rejection at the relatively low gas fluxes, and robust performance in terms of recovery across the full range of gas fluxes. We report on the development of a finite-element method model for a pilot furnace for the production of manganese alloys. The model is a multiphysics model that addresses material flow, electrical conditions, heat transfer, and physical and chemical transformations. It is capable of studying both quasi-steady and transient states in time-dependent simulations. The model includes common charge materials and fluxes and can simulate production of both ferromanganese and silicomanganese alloys with acid and basic slags, as well as changing charge compositions. The model output provides access to the material distribution in the furnace during furnace runs, temperature profiles, current paths, energy balances, and alloy and slag production rates and compositions.

Determining the cutability and mechanical properties of rocks is vital for the feasibility studies of a mine or tunnel projects. Many scientists have investigated the correlation between these parameters in order to predict specific energy (SE) and other important rock cutability properties for many years. On the other hand, textural properties of rocks have been quantified in detail by Howarth and Rowlands (1987). Hence, it was possible to correlate mechanical and textural properties of rocks by using a parameter known as the texture coefficient (TC). The main objective of this study was to use the test results taken from a research project carried out by Bilgin and Shahrair1tocorrelate the mechanical and cutability properties of rocks with textural properties of rocks. For this purpose, uniaxial compressive strength (UCS), uniaxial tensile strength (UTS), cone indent or (CI),point load index (PLI), unit volume weight (?), porosity, SE, and normal and cutting force values, were correlated with textural properties of rocks. Hence it was possible to make illuminating interpretations about the relationships between the mechanical and cutability with the textural properties of rocks. In ilmenite smelting, the FeO content of the feed material (nominally FeO.TiO2) is decreased by reduction with carbon. In a parallel reaction, a significant amount of the TiO2is reduced to Ti2O3.One of the striking features of these reactions is a consistent relationship between the extents of FeO and TiO2reduction; this relationship is independent of furnace size. It was recently proposed that this relationship follows from the solidification behaviour of the slag, where the final slag composition corresponds to the minimum melting point (?eutectic groove?) in the FeO-TiO2-Ti2O3phase system; the hypothesis is that solidification equilibrium with the freeze lining stabilizes the slag composition. If this is the case, the system of slag and freeze lining must be capable of correcting two types of disturbances: thermal and compositional. Thermal disturbances result from incorrect power input, for the feed rates of ilmenite and reductant. For example, excessive power input will tend to overheat the slag, causing the freeze lining to melt partially, establishing a new steady-state heat loss from the furnace. Compositional disturbances result from an incorrect reductant input for the given power and ilmenite input. In this work, the dynamic response of the slag and freeze lining to different inputs (flow rates of ilmenite and reductant, and power input) is modelled. The model is based on solidification equilibria, and quantified heat loss through the freeze lining. The conclusion is that the solidification equilibrium cannot constrain the composition to the eutectic groove for typical operating conditions. An effective electrowinning process in hydrometallurgical industry requires fluoride levels in the base metal solution to be less than 10 mg/l. Selective removal of the fluoride ions from base solution is thus desired, if fluoride was added to control calcium and magnesium in the circuit. Consequently, adsorption of fluoride onto activated alumina was studied in a batch and a column set-up. The effects of base metal solution pH, temperature, initial concentration and flow rate on activated alumina performance were investigated in either a batch or column configuration. A two-level factorial experimental design was implemented in studying column dynamics. Results demonstrate that activated alumina is an effective adsorbent for selective removal of fluoride from base solution. In the batch operation, fluoride was removed to values below the maximum allowable concentration (10 mg/[l]) when pH was = 8. In the column adsorption step at 55°C and 600mg/[l] initial concentration, up to 16 bed volumes were processed before breakthrough level was reached. Desorption step using 1% sodium hydroxide solution achieved an elution of 8 bed volumes. The activated alumina (AA) had a capacity of 8.65 gF/[l]AA at the 10mgF/[l] fluoride breakthrough level during the column adsorption test. Calcium minerals such as scheelite, phosphate, apatite are valuable minerals, which have similar flotation properties to the calcium gangue minerals. An additional problem is the fine dispersion and close mineral association of valuable and other minerals. Low polar compounds (non-ionic surfactant), such as fatty iso alcohols, neonol and phosphol, and their combinations with sodium oleate have been studied using flotation of monominerals and ore flotation; ATR IR spectroscopy and TEM for study surface of minerals; UV spectroscopy for control solubility, aggregation and de-aggregation processes. Increase in solubility of fatty acid collectors was confirmed by low soluble (heteropolar) compounds. Oxyethylated esters of phosphoric acid are adsorbed on phosphorite by -O2PO2R2 and on other rock minerals by donation of OH bond. Same effect shows difference of adsorption of fatty iso alcohols on calcite and scheelite. The different forms of adsorption of ionic and nonionic compound on a sparingly-soluble mineral surface creates distinction of the flotation kinetics and technological balance of ore flotation. The results of the separation of flotation of scheelite from calcite depend on the order of pouring into pulp of fatty iso alcohols and oleate, and their ratio in the mixture. Increasing scheelite recovery into rougher scheelite concentrate by 3.6% for both the flotation and sludge classes was obtained. Calcite recovery varied slightly upwards or downwards by 0.8-2.4%. The use of the non-ionic surfactant phosphol in combination with a fatty acid soap allows for obtaining a phosphate concentrate with more than 28% P2O5 content and almost 80% recovery in flotation operation. In modern steel continuous casting technologies mould fluxes are well-known to assure lubrication required by tribological system of mould-solidifying strand shell, and to provide crystalline phase solid film, contributing to control heat extraction between strand and mould wall. Actual cooling rates during normal continuous casting mould operations are far higher than critical cooling rate of the liquid slag. Indeed, DTA measurements point out that even relatively small cooling rates of 30?50 K/min are high enough to give exiguous formation of crystals. In this paper, contribution of devitrification in defining crystalline phase formation of industrial basic mould slag, used in continuous casting of crack-sensitive steel grades, has been investigated by means of non-isothermal experiments study. Devitrification has proved to play a major role in mould flux crystallization in a working environment explaining the higher amount of crystalline phase formed in plant sample in comparison with lab sample from DTA analysis with typical cooling rate of 5?20 K/min. The amount of crystalline phases formed ranks as follow: Cuspidine > Combeite > Gehlenite. Kinetic analysis of DTA non-isothermal experiments has provided kinetic parameters through Kissinger and Ozawa methods, as Avrami constant resulting to be n ?2 and activation energy of Cuspidine crystallization resulting to be EC= 315 kJ/mole. The effect of addition to the parent material of oxides as MnO, TiO2, ZrO2, Al2O3 and Fe2O3near to saturation point has proved to affect, in certain cases, crystallization behaviour of mold flux. In particular, MnO, TiO2, ZrO2oxides produce a relevant dump of crystallization of Combeite and Gehlenite phases, while Al2O3and Fe2O3do not appreciably affect crystallization. "To be able to responsibly develop a multiphysics model of the steel belt sintering (SBS) process used to sinter chromite fines, it is important to have a comprehensive understanding of the process. This understanding was gained through a site visit, observation of the process in operation, and interaction with the operators. Material characterization will also reveal much about the process that is not yet fully understood. A well-defined and representative mass and energy balance will also give valuable insight into the process. The plan for the multiphysics model aims to combine a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model with a discrete element method (DEM) model.To obtain a more accurate mass and energy balance representation of the SBS process, it was decided to develop a dynamic distributed parameter model of the mass and energy balance. This model will be used to gain better understanding of the SBS process so that a more complicated multiphysics model can be developed later. The reason for this is because the SBS process is very dynamic, with a large temperature distribution throughout the length of the process. In its current state, the mass and energy balance model is capable of handling solid and gas material packages and exchanging heat between these packages where they are mixed, and is able to model the heating of the gas by burning CO gas. The next step in the development of the model will involve enabling it to handle evaporatoin of liquid water, burning of solid carbon in the pellets, reduction of iron oxide in the pellets with the CO gas formed from carbon combustion, and then oxidation of the reduced iron in the oxygen-rich cooling zones."

Research is a business activity, and is as different from other business activities as banking is from mining. attempting to use research to solve their problems, managers do not always recognize its unique features, are frequently disillusioned with the outcome. With a view to enabling managers to use research more effectively, an outline is given of the features of research as applied to mining. Types of research are distinguished, and stages in the research-and-development process are identified. The time-scales and resource requirements of the various types and phases of research are explained. Examples of research that have reached implementation in gold mining are given to illustrate the features mentioned. Practical and economic considerations are discussed, and pitfals and recommendations in the use of research are highlighted.
