An international conference on 'The Planning and Operation of Open-pit and Strip Mines' was held at University of Pretoria from 9th to 13th April, 1984. The Conference was organized by the Mining Alumni Society the University of Pretoria and The South African Institute Mining and Metallurgy. Delegates of the mining fraternity from all over the world and Southern Africa attended the Conference. These included more than 400 delegates from Australia, Austria, Botswana, Brazil, Canada, Germany, Holland, SWA-Namibia, the United Kingdom, the United States of America, Zimbabwe, and South Africa.

An approach to the design of a tailings disposal system is presented using an example from a platinum project on the eastern limb of the Bushveld Complex as a base case. The design is driven by two inputs: namely, maximizing water recovery and minimizing power cost, expressed as cubic metres and kilowatts per ton of solids deposited on the tailings storage facility respectively. The approach considers low-, medium-, and high-density platinum tailings and uses material-specific aspects such as thickening and rheology to determine the most economical option. An analysis based on direct capital and operating cost (water and electricity) shows that the medium-density scenario results in the lowest total cost per ton of tailings deposited, even though this system results in the highest electricity consumption per ton of tailings deposited. As the cost of water and electricity is likely to increase in the future, the higher-density tailings disposal options become more economical, with the paste option the preferred option.

In exploiting the ultra-deep, narrow reef ore bodies of the Witwatersrand, the ventilation and cooling systems within the stopes play a critical role because of high concentrations of active workers. This paper examines the heat, ventilation and cooling effects of a number of different stoping layouts for narrow reef mining in ultra-deep operations in very hot rock. The stope ventilation and cooling needs are driven primarily by the difference between the air temperature and that of the rock front being excavated. These needs depend on the face utilization, geometry, face advance (rate and direction), layout, backfill, use of water and machinery1,2,3. Detailed studies of different stoping configurations have been undertaken for mining operations extending to depths of 5000m below surface, where virgin rock temperatures approach 70°C. Extensive work has been completed with regard to evaluating ventilation and cooling requirements to maintain air reject temperatures of 28°C wet-bulb and better. This knowledge is being used to determine overall cooling requirements, reduce operational costs and maximize the efficiency of cooling systems. These issues are important when considering both the local and regional air conditioning systems and the most effective application of in-stope chilled water.

The Schools A school on 'Measurement, Process Control and Optimization in the Minerals Industry', organized by The South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy, was presented twice by course leader Dr Ken Garner, ably assisted by the staff of the Measurement and Control Division of Mintek. The first school was held from 16th to 20th July, 1984, at the University of the Witwatersrand, and the second from 11th to 15th February, 1985, at Mintek. Project development The Sydney Branch of the Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy will hold a second Project Development Symposium in Sydney between 7th and 10th October, 1986. This second symposium will extend the range of topics covered by its predecessor in 1983 to emphasize planning (including strategic planning), construction, and project commissioning.

The need to recruit locally produced engineers by the South African Mining Industry led to the Engineering Faculty at the University of the Witwatersrand developing a number of academic bridging initiatives for educationally disadvantaged students. The graduation rate achieved during the initial five years of operation by the most successful of these programmes has been on a par with that of al other students but the performance of subsequent intakes has declined to such an extent that the continuance of this scheme could now be at risk. One reason for this reduction in throughput is that many of the applicants for the increasing number of mining bursaries have been more interested in the bursary than the profession and have either failed or dropped out due to a lack of application and motivation. This will have serious consequences for both Wits and the Industry if it continues and some method of identifying unsuitable or suspect applicants needs to be introduced as a mater of urgency. It is recommended that an introductory course be set up at a working mine that would be run under the auspices of Wits, as a joint venture with industry, and include a level of academic input that would provide both bridging needs and certain first year credits. The final form of this course will require extensive consultation with al parties but needs to be completed before the end of 1996. It is further recommended that the advertising and promotion of mining careers be expanded and much improved.

Confined bed comminution in High Pressure Grinding Rollers (HPGR) and Vertical Roller Mills (VRM) is gaining substantial attention in many applications. Previously used mainly for milling coal or construction materials, HPGR and VRM have started to complement or even replace tumbling mills in ore beneficiation. Materials like coal or clinker are relatively homogenous, however, in comparison to metal ores and wall rocks. This characteristic poses a new challenge to the confined bed comminution but also an opportunity. Fuerstenau and Abouzeid have investigated the selectivity in comminution of a mixture of particles of different strength in a particle bed. The median particle size and particle size distribution (PSD) of the two constituents used were kept constant. Only the proportion of the two constituents was modified. The competence of a material is, however, also a function of particle size. Smaller particles tend to be more competent than larger ones of the same material. If selective comminution is applied on ores, this size influence has to be understood. The paper presents research results on this topic based on experimental investigations with model materials as well as with natural particles, which were stressed in a piston-die press. It appeared that the comminution result depends substantially on the material characteristics and the composition of the mixture. PK2 Ventilation shaft is part of Paardekraal No 2 twin shaft system that is being developed to replace depleting Merensky reef production at Paardekraal shaft complex. The sinking team at this shaft faced considerable challenge of improving the total sinking cycle in order to be able to deliver the fully equipped shaft on time and on schedule. The cladding support cycle was identified as the tedious and time consuming activity in the overall shaft sinking operation. Reduction in the time required for handling and setting up the support installation equipment, and the time required for subsequent installation of the necessary support has a direct impact on the overall cycle time, and consequently the overall productivity and efficiency of the sinking operation. This reduction in support cycle was achieved by making use of machine carousel. The objective of this paper is to describe the support methodology that was used during the ventilation shaft sinking and the use of the machine carousel to reduce the cladding support cycle. The machine carousel replaces the traditional use of machine kibble in conventional vertical shaft sinking and has been designed specifically for installation of sidewall support at the shaft bottom during the sinking process.

INFACON is of special significance to people in South Africa who are interested in ferro-alloys, because it was in South Africa that the idea of regular international congresses on ferro-alloys was conceived and developed. INFACON 74, the first-ever such congress, was held in Johannesburg from 22nd to 26th April, 1974, being organized by the South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy, the National Institute for Metallurgy, and the Ferro Alloy Producers' Association of South Africa. ABSTRACT: Some residential areas of the iron basin of Lorraine (in the North-East of France) are affected by noxious gas emissions (under oxygenated, carbon dioxide loaded and radon loaded gas mixtures). Site investigations showed that the gas flow was mainly due to natural thermal air circulation between old mines and the external atmosphere. The main hazards associated with this flow of gas and its potential accumulation in confined volumes within buildings are asphyxiation and intoxication. A further study is in progress in order to better understand the origin of the gas generation within the old iron mine workings. Following the first hypothesis, the carbon dioxide emission is mainly due to the specific hydro-geo-chemical process associating the pyrite oxidation with the acid dissolution of carbonates. ZUSAMMENFASSUNG: Einige Wohngebiete der Eisenmulde Lothringen (im Nordöst Frankreich) werden von Ausgasung gesundsheitsschädlichen sauerstoffarmen Mischungen, die mit Kohlendioxid und Radon beladen sind, betroffen. Untersuchungen am Ort haben gezeigt, wie diese Gasstroemung von natürlichem thermischen Luftumlauf zwischen den alten Bergwerken und der externen Atmosphäre ausgelöst wird. Erstickung und Vergiftung sind die wichtigste Risiken, die mit dieser Gasströmung und ihrer möglichen Speicherung in begrenzten Lokalen zusammenhängen. Eine weitere Untersuchung wird durchgefuehrt so dass man die Herkunft der Gaserzeugung in den alten Grubenräume besser versteht. Der ersten Hypothese folgend, Ausgasung von Kohlensäure liegt vor allem an dem hydro-geo-chemischen Prozess, der Pyritrösten mit der säuren Auflösung von Karbonate verbindet SCHLÜSSELWÖRTER: Gas, Ausgasung, Bergwerk, Strömung, Pyrit RESUME: Certaines agglomérations du bassin ferrifère lorrain (au Nord-Est de la France) sont affectées par des émanations de mélanges gazeux sous-oxygénés et chargés en certains gaz nocifs (dioxyde de carbone, radon…). Les investigations effectuées in situ ont montré que les écoulements gazeux à l’origine de ces émanations sont liées au phénomène de tirage naturel entre les anciens travaux miniers et la surface. Les principaux risques engendrés par ces émanations de gaz et son accumulation possible dans des endroits confinés sont l’asphyxie et l’intoxication. Une étude est en cours afin d’expliquer l’origine de la modification de l’air au sein des vieux travaux miniers. Les émissions de dioxyde de carbone seraient dues à des processus hydro-geo-chimiques associant l’oxydation de la pyrite et la dissolution de carbonates. The quality of the concentrator plant process water is crucial for high performing mineral flotation circuits. Significant metal recovery and concentrate grade losses have been noticed particularly in more closed water loops. The recovery and quality losses have started to emerge mainly with decreased freshwater usage and because of changes in tailings management towards tailings thickening, paste, or dry stacking. These changes result in shorter, closed water loops with a rapid build-up of harmful components with negative impact on the beneficiation process. Consequently, water quality has a direct link to decreased product value and sales returns. Complete cleaning or water blending might not be the right way to achieve high recovery and high-quality products. Instead, the key is to understand what kind of water qualities are needed for the flotation of specific minerals. In this study harmful substances in various plant water streams were removed and/or modified by pilot-scale dissolved air flotation. Batch-scale mineral flotation tests with the untreated and treated water were then performed by using fresh ore samples and the plant’s own laboratory flotation procedure. The results indicate that because of dissolved air flotation, the mineral flotation recoveries were enhanced by 1‒3.3%. The Moon, asteroids, and planets of the solar system represent the most distant caches of wealth that humanity has ever considered recovering. Yet, in addition to the potentially recoverable values represented there, harvesting off-Earth resources has a second, almost incalculable sustainable benefit in that they can be retrieved with absolutely no damage to Earth. Previous research mostly assessed the potential of asteroids and the Moon for mining purposes from a theoretical and scientific point of view. These studies investigated drawbacks that could be experienced in this type of operation, but no detailed economic evaluation that is meaningful for mining project management has been conducted and the parameters that are most likely to make an operation feasible are unknown. This paper provides a preliminary economic and sensitivity analysis of a possible off-Earth mining business extracting minerals from an existing asteroid.

Dr R. E. Robinson, Pr. Eng., obtained a B.sc. (Chem. Eng.) cum laude from the University of the Witwatersrand in 1950 and a Ph.D. (Eng.) from the same University in 1953, where he was awarded the Haikes Memorial Medal for Industrial Chemistry. Professor G. G. Garrett was appointed Professor of Physical and :Fabrication Metallurgy in the Department of Metallurgy at the University of the Witwatersrand in June 1980, and in January 1984 he became Head of the Department. Mr P. A. van Wielligh, Pr. Eng., climbed the mining ladder in the hard way, starting as a Mine Surveyor in 1936 and working his way up as Chief Surveyor, Underground Manager, Mine Manager, and Consulting Engineer, to Executive Director, including the intermediate steps. Mr H. E. James, Pr. Eng., is a graduate in Chemical Engineering from the University of the Witwatersrand. Both his B.sc. degree (1961) and his M.sc. degree (1964) were obtained on bursaries, the former from Gold Fields of South Africa and the latter from the Atomic Energy Board. Mr G. Pienaar, Pr. Eng., obtained a B.Eng. (Met) in 1967 and an M.Eng. in 1973, both from the University of Pretoria. Dr A. K. Haines, Pr. Eng., obtained all his degrees from the University of Natal, finishing with a. Ph.D. in 1971. Mr B. C. Alberts, Pr. Eng., obtained his academic training at the University of Pretoria, where he was awarded B.sc. degrees in both agricultural engineering (1963) and mining engineering (1965). Mr H. C. van Zyl, Pr. Eng., holds B.sc. degrees in mining engineering (1968) and civil engineering (1972), both from the University of Pretoria.

In most coal preparation processes, water is a necessary medium, but the presence of water in coal after it has been cleaned has a negative impact on transportation costs, handling and specific energy values. The utilization of super absorbent polymers (SAP) in the nappy application is well known. The concept of utilizing these polymers was investigated for the purposes of dewatering coal and other fines, generated by preparation processes such as flotation. SAPs are granular highly cross-linked synthetic copolymers with excellent water-absorbing properties. The dewatering process is characterized by three main stages: (a) contact of super absorbent polymer with high-moisture fine coal; (b) separation of dewatered fine coal from super absorbent polymer; and (c) regeneration of used super absorbent polymer, by exploiting its response to changes in conditions such as pH or temperature. Preliminary tests showed the separation step to be very difficult. The novel idea of encasing a given amount of polymer in a water permeable cloth solved this problem (of separating the swollen polymer from the dewatered coal). Preliminary tests investigating the effectiveness of the sachets of polymer showed a drastic decrease in the moisture contents of slurries. Furthermore, it was shown that it was possible to regenerate the polymer (still within the sachets) through thermal drying. A full-scale experimental programme was then followed to accurately determine the feasibility of using sachets of SAP. The experimental variables were initial slurry moisture content and polymer dosage. It was observed that the sachets seemed to work fastest and most effectively at high moistures and also at higher dosages of SAP. Regeneration of the polymer was also investigated, using two methods: thermal regeneration and pH-induced regeneration. The experimental variables, for investigating the regeneration process, were method of regeneration and grade of water used. Thermal regeneration at 70°C seemed to work successfully. Although the cost of using thermal energy is still a problem, the safety aspect (fire hazards) has been addressed since the polymer does not ignite when heated, unlike fine coal particles that may do so. The alternative method of regeneration, which exploits the pH-sensitivity of the polymer, was less successful, and further work needs to be conducted.

Detailed monitoring of the response of the rock mass between rockbolt reinforcement units subjected to a simulated seismic source has been successfully conducted. This work has shown the increase in amplification of the Peak Particle Velocity (PPV) with distance from a rock bolt unit, and, a minimum PPV for rockburst damage for the given site characteristics. This understanding, at this site, will allow the design of a suitable rock bolt spacing to prevent unravelling of the rock mass between the rock bolt units for a given level of seismicity. Or, alternatively, an estimation of the requirement for a suitable fabric support system, for the anticipated level of seismicity, can be made.

In a German governmental funded three-year research project, a closed loop recycling process for Nickel-Metalhydride-Batteries (NiMH) is under development. Today the discarded batteries are used in the steel industry as a cheap nickel source. Cobalt and rare earth (RE) are slagged and lost for reuse. The entire value of the metals in discarded Ni-MH is estimated to be 4?-4.5 ?/kg. Spent NiMH-batteries containing 36?42 per cent Ni, 3?4 per cent Co and 8?10 per cent rare rarth (Ce,La, Pr, Nd). The dismantled and processed NiMH-batteries are melted in a DC electric arc furnace producing a nickel-cobalt alloy and a slag phase highly enriched with RE-oxides. The key to success in this process is to find a suitable slag system, which ensures best separation of NiCo-alloy from the rare earth oxides and high concentration of RE in the slag. Different oxidic and halogenic slag systems are investigated in the melting process. So far a slag system based on 65per cent CaF2 and 35 per cent CaO delivers the best separation of the two phases and metal yields. A slag with a composition of 20?25 per cent La, 13-16 per cent Ce, 1.5?2.5 Pr, 4.5?6.5 per cent Nd is obtained and further treated to misch metal hydro-/electrometallurgically. The first results of the influence of rare earth oxides on the density of CaO-CaF2slag system are shown at 1600°C. A physical modelling study has been carried out to simulate the slag-metal dispersion induced by a high-strength bottom gas injection. Water and kerosene were utilized to simulate metal and slag respectively. A water model of CLU (Creusot-Loire Uddeholm)vessel was used with three different nozzle orientations, namely, off-centre, triangular off-centre and centre. The gas flow rates changed from 0.00599 m3/s to 0.01081 m3/s. Height of heavy and light phases was kept fixed at 0.23 m and 0.02 m respectively. The dispersed phase hold-up was determined at various axial and radial distances, gas flow rates, and tuyere configurations. The observations revealed that at a fixed gas injection rate, as the vertical distance increased in the centerline, straight off-centre orientation resulted in greater dispersed phase hold-up values than those of the centre configuration and the triangular off-centre orientation. The dispersed phase hold-up was found to increase with gas injection rate and decreased with axial distance. The variation of the dispersed phase hold-up with the dimensionless axial distance and the gas injection rate was correlated by using the modified Froude number. The experimental values of the dispersed phase hold-up were found to be in reasonable agreement with the correlated values obtained from the modelling equations. The findings of the present study may be utilized in the ferroalloy refining vessels in terms of designing tuyere locations for optimum processing conditions.

Zincor operates four Lurgi fluidised-bed roasters at its roast-leach-electrowin refinery in Springs, South Africa. In 2006, Zincor?s four roasters had reached ages ranging between 26 and 38 years, while the expected life of this type of roaster is generally 20 to 25 years. Based on its condition, Roaster 3 was the first to be rebuilt in 2006. Roaster 4 is being rebuilt in 2007 and the last two roasters will be rebuilt over the next few years as necessary. The main damage to Roaster 3 was caused by buckling of the roaster steel shell. This caused the freeboard and dome areas to shift, resulting in cracks in the dome brick lining and crumbling of the bricks lining the freeboard. The steel shell buckled due to the combined effects of too-high operating temperatures and corrosion caused by the following two main factors: ? Thicker external insulation was installed during a previous maintenance shut which resulted in and increased steel shell temperature and exacerbated the normal metal fatigue; ? SO2/SO3 containing gas that had permeated through the brick lining, passed through its dew point during frequent planned and unplanned shuts over the life of the roaster. This caused acid formation between the refractory brick lining and steel shell, resulting in corrosion of the shell. The initial plan was to replace only the damaged areas of Roaster 3, but upon dismantling more damage was found and the roaster was rebuilt from the tuyeres upwards. During the rebuild, the opportunity was taken to modify the design of some of the brickwork to extend its life and make future repairs easier. This paper discusses the mode of failure of Roaster 3 and the lessons learnt during its dismantling and rebuilding.

The 2101 lean duplex stainless steel has wide potential application in storage, heat exchangers, and in the oil and gas industries. This work investigates the electrochemical behaviour of 2101 duplex stainless steel with an addition of 0.15 wt% ruthenium, using potentiodynamic techniques in 1M H2SO4 at 25º, 40º, 60º, and 80ºC. The microstructures of samples were characterized using optical metallography and scanning electron microscopy. The results showed that the ruthenium addition moved the corrosion potential of alloy 2101 to a more positive potential. All samples containing ruthenium displayed longer passive regions at 25°C and 80°C compared to those without ruthenium. Alloys without ruthenium had higher critical current density (icrit) values when compared to the alloys with ruthenium. Ruthenium additions decreased the passive current densities and inhibited anodic dissolution. At room temperature the corrosion rate of alloys with ruthenium was lower than these without ruthenium.

Concerning the excavation of rock cavern, it is one of the most important issues to evaluate the behavior of rock joints. But few detailed measurements for joint behavior had been conducted. Therefore, in order to evaluate the stability of rock cavern, effective approach for monitoring and analyzing the joint behavior needs to be developed. In this paper, authors described the results of analysis for joint behavior during the excavation by comparing with both results of the in-situ measurement by BTV and the numerical analysis by MBC model. Bei Ausschachten von Gesteinshöhlen ist es von besonderer Bedeutung, das stark von den Verbindungsteilen beeinflusste Gesteinsverhalten zu bewerten. Jedoch wurden bisher nur wenige Beobachtungen über das Öffnungsverhalten von Verbindungen durchgeführt. Daher muss ein effizientes Verfahren zur Überwachung der Stabilität unterirdischer Höhlen und der Analyse des Verhaltens von Verbindungsstellen entwickelt werden. In der vorliegenden Studie beschreiben die Autoren das Verhalten von Verbindungsstellen während der Ausschachtung durch Vergleiche sowohl mit den Ergebnissen von in situ Messungen mittels BTV als auch numerische Simulation mit dem MBC Modell, welches auch Diskontinuitäten berücksichtigen kann. Quand il s’agit d’excaver une caverne dans une roche ayant des joints très développés, il importe fort d’évaluer le comportement de la roche. Cependant, le nombre d’observations du comportement des roches effectuées au niveau de joints est loin d’être suffisant. Par conséquent, pour s’assurer de la stabilité des parois des cavernes souterraines, il a fallu mettre au point une méthode fiable de détection et d’analyse du mouvement des joints. Dans cet article, les auteurs décrivent leurs études de comportement des joints pendant l'excavation, en comparant les résultats des mesures effectuées in-situ, dans un chantier d’excavation par BTV , avec ceux d’analyse de la simulation numérique par MBC permettant de tenir compte des discontinuités.
