With the advent of the First World Conference on Sampling and Blending (WCSB1) in Denmark in 2003 and the subsequent biannual meetings, together with other sampling conferences held on a regular basis, the central tenets of sound sampling practice and theory are spreading throughout the minerals industry. End-users and project houses, or groups who execute the projects, are all now better-informed about the principles of ?correct? sampling and preparation. To support this, many large mining companies now have their own in-house champion who will advise and ensure that the supply of sampling equipment is correct in terms of design and application, which further contributes to improved metallurgical accounting. The presence of a sampling champion also ensures that consistent and acceptable standards in regard to sampling practice are maintained throughout the group. This has, in turn, placed a greater degree of responsibility on the shoulders of sampling equipment suppliers, in terms of their equipment designs and product offerings, as well as applications knowledge for effective installation of equipment on client plants. This paper attempts to highlight the significant challenges that sampling equipment manufacturers often face with regard to complying with the newly understood requirements of best practice and sampling equipment design. Manufacturers invariably face issues with end-users or project houses, including project cost control, restricted headroom for samplers in plant layouts, and a lack of knowledge in certain quarters. These all have a potentially negative effect on the final outcome of a proposed sampling solution or implemented project. In reality, what is intended by all parties and what is ultimately installed are at times very different, with undesirable consequences for all concerned. Against this challenging background, there are, however, a number of instances where intent and implementation are complementary, with very satisfactory results. The First International Symposium on Seismicity in Mines, organized by the South African National Group on Rock Mechanics in collaboration with the South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy, was held in Randburg (near Johannesburg) from 13th to 17th September, 1982. It was the first attempt to provide an international forum for the consideration of seismic problems specifically affecting mines or associated with mining. Numerical mathematics The South African Society for Numerical Mathematics and the Computer Science Department of the University of Natal are organizing the Ninth Symposium on Numerical Mathematics to be held in Durban from 18th to 20th July, 1983.

Members are advised that the Council has decided to change the format of the Journal from the present size to the standard international A4 size with effect from August, 1969. By making this change we will be conforming to more general practice today in regard to publications and this should effect certain economies and facilitate selling of advertising space. It has been arranged that in future the publication of the Journal, including advertisement sales, will be handled by Kelvin Publications (Pty.) Ltd. who are already doing this work satisfactorily for the Mechanical and Electrical Institutes. While making these changes, the opportunity is taken of redesigning the outer cover of the Journal to incorporate the new coat of arms. The Council trusts that these changes will meet with the approval of members.

Crossroads for Students Students in their matriculation year, whatever their background, have reached a crossroads in their lives: behind them lie the relatively carefree years of childhood; ahead lies the whole of their working lives. Whether those working lives will be rewarding and interesting depends to considerable extent on whether they get 'a good matric' and carry on to some form of further education. This symposium, being held at The President Hotel, Johannesburg on 9th-11th September, 1969, is being jointly sponsored by The South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy, The South African Corrosion Council and the Southern Africa Stainless Steel Development Association, and supported by the C.S.I.R. The three days of technical sessions, at which 350 delegates are expected, will include introductory films on the properties and uses of stainless steels, papers on corrosion problems and prevention, design and economics, welding and applications in industries of particular importance to South Africa. The programme includes four overseas guest speakers who are acknowledged leaders in their respective fields. Another very successful evening meeting was organized by the Johannesburg Branch of The South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy on 20th November, 1990, when Mr R.D. MacPherson, General Manager of Richards Bay Minerals, gave a presentation on the Richards Bay operations. The function was held in the Ballroom of the Johannesburg Country Club, and the very high attendance (some 250 people) was indeed a reflection of the high profile of the subject mater. It was also a fitting reward for the efforts of Mr MacPherson and his team, who spent a considerable amount of time and effort traveling the country to present 'the other side of the story'.

The Department of Mineral Resources of Thailand is organising, on behalf of the Government of Thailand and the International Tin Council, the Second Technical Conference on Tin. The Conference will be held at Sala Santitham, Bangkok from 18th to 22nd November, 1969. Papers will be grouped under three main headings: (i) Geology and prospecting; (ii) Mining and ore dressing; (iii) Miscellaneous, e.g. stimulating production, metallurgy, estimation of reserves etc. Pre-prints of papers will be circulated. A field trip to Southern Thailand has been arranged for 25th November to 2nd December, 1969. Details of the Conference and the field trip can be obtained from Mr. W. A colloquium on solid-liquid separation was held by The South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy on 23rd September, 1982, at the State Pavilion Auditorium, Milner Park, Johannesburg, to co-incide with the Electra Mining Exhibition. It was attended by about 150 delegates. Eight papers were presented covering: Geostatistics The School of Earth Sciences of Stanford University, the Centre de Geostatistique ofthe Paris School of Mines, and the Department de Genie Mineral of the Ecole Polytechnique of Montreal are cosponsoring the organization of a 2nd NATO ASI (North Atlantic Treaty Organization Advanced Study Institute), under the name of 'GEOSTAT TAHOE 1983', to be held at South Lake Tahoe, California, on 4th to 17th September, 1983.

Underground rock boring was the topic of the mining vacation school held at the University of the Witwatersrand in the week 4th to 8th February, 1980. The School, which dealt with the management and economics of the subject, attracted 75 delegates from all sectors of the South African mining industry, in addition to two delegates from Germany and one from Zambia.

Copper sulfide minerals generally have high floatability, but their floatability decreases when surfaces are oxidised under some conditions. Sodium hydrosulfide, NaHS, is known both as an activator and as a depressant for copper minerals. NaHS at low concentrations activates copper oxides by sulfurising surfaces, but at high concentrations depresses copper sulfides by interfering with the adsorption of collectors. In this paper, we applied NaHS to activate oxidised chalcocite and bornite and focused on the conditions of NaHS treatments such as dosages and pH, and the effect of these conditions on the floatability of those minerals. The pure minerals treated with NaHS were analysed using zeta potential analyser and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Analyses indicated that the reactions of NaHS and the products on the mineral surfaces after the reactions (i.e. oxidation, pH change) depended on whether NaHS reacted with copper or iron, and the reactions between NaHS and iron depend on NaHS concentration and pH. Flotation tests using a small column cell were performed with a single pure mineral, and using a Denver-type flotation machine with a copper sulfide ore. The results of each flotation test were utilised to clarify the floatability. The relation between flotation behaviours and analysis results were also discussed. The separating performance of a pilot dry beneficiation system using a gas-solid fluidized bed was investigated with coal from South Africa. The coal used for the study has a low inherent moisture content, a moderate ash content, a moderate volatile content, a low sulphur content and a high calorific value. Its washability is moderate. Experimental results show that the separating quality of the fluidized bed drops gradually as the feed-coal particle size decreases. The probable error, E, values for 50?25mm, 25?13 mm and 13?6 mm coals were 0.04 g/cm3, 0.06 g/cm3 and 0.09 g/cm3, respectively. The cause of the differences in separating characteristics was analysed by particle dynamics and numerical modelling. Furthermore, the pilot fluidized bed was employed to separate 50-6mm coal. In this experiment the coal ash content was reduced from 23.74% to 11.79%, with a probable error, E, value of 0.07 g/cm3and a recovery efficiency of 98.26%. This indicates that the fluidized bed is applicable to the separation of coal from South Africa and has good separating performance and wide applicability. The aspect ratio (mill diameter/mill length) of autogenous and semi autogenous mills varies widely and can be as high as three or as low as 0.5. The literature on the subject of what effect aspect ratio has on grinding mill performance or energy efficiency is almost non-existent. However, at the design stage of many grinding circuits the subject is often vigorously debated amongst metallurgists. In this paper the performance characteristics of mills with different aspect ratios are examined to determine whether process performance characteristics are a function of aspect ratio and whether high aspect ratio mills are any more or less energy efficient than low aspect ratio units. Data from both pilot and full-scale mills are used for this purpose in open and closed circuit configurations.

The feed to the BCL concentrator is made of the ore from Phikwe No3 shaft, Selebi shaft and Selebi North shaft. The receiving bin of the concentrator has daily throughput of 7869mt live capacity of ore with feed grade from underground operation of 0.70%Ni, 0.75% Cu and 0.05% Co. The valuable minerals in the ore are Pentlandite, Chalcopyrite. Cobalt is present mainly in the solid solution in pentlandite. The common non-sulphides minerals are Amphibolites, quartz, micas, and Feldspar while pyrite and pyrrhotite are the major gangue sulphides. Pyrrhotite contains between 0.1% and 1% Ni in solid solution. From the mineralogical investigation, it was found that approximately 65% of the pentlandite in the ore occurs as exsolutions in the pyrrhotite and the grain sizes ranges from 8 to 38µm. about 25% of the nickel bearing pentlandite is medium grained and subhedral. This kind of pentlandite occurs along the cracks of pyrrhotite or as inclusions in pyrrhotite. The rest of pentlandite present is disseminated in the gangue matrix. Because of the fine occurrence of pentlandite, fine grinding was conducted in order to improve the recovery as well as the concentrate quality. A series of subsequent flotation test were performed in order to evaluate grinds of 35, 40, 45, 50, 60 and 80% passing 75µm. It was observed that ? The mass pull increased together with increasing fineness of grind ? Similar nickel recoveries were obtained at 35 and 40% passing 75µm but from 50% and 60% the grind was seen to adversely affect the nickel recovery. At 80% passing 75µm the recovery increased by small amount. ? Flotation kinetics showed higher initial nickel recoveries but these did not translate into higher final recoveries. ? Grinding finer than 80% passing 75µm yield very high grades of the concentrate in the first minute of the flotation test, and the grade is dramatically reduced in the fifth minute of the test. It was concluded that the current grind of approximately 48% passing 75µm is close to the optimum and no significant benefit were found to be associated with finer primary grinds. The inconsistence of the grade and recovery as well as the pentlandite losses will be discussed. Keywords: Pentlandite, Nickel losses, Grain size, Flotation
