Ancient mining in Southern Africa, with reference to a copper mine in the Harmony Block, north-eastern Transvaal T. M. EVERS. B.A. (Birm.) (Visitor) and R. P. VAN DEN BERG. B.Sc. (Wits.) (Visitor) A recently discovered mine on the farms Harmony 24 and 25 in the Letaba district has been investigated archaeologically by T. M. Evers and geologically by R. P. van den Berg. The archaeological investigations shed light on the mining techniques and accompanying metallurgical techniques, while the geological investigations give information on the structure and mineralization of the mine. Comparisons with other investigated ancient workings show that mining was well understood in Iron Age times, before the African peoples had any contact with Europeans.

Two Rivers Platinum Mine (TRP) is a 55:45 joint venture between African Rainbow Minerals and Impala Platinum, respectively. TRP is situated on the farm Dwarsrivier 372KT, in the southernsector of the eastern limb of the Bushveld Complex. Dwarsrivier is underlain by rock formations of the Critical Zone (Winterveld norite-anorthosite) and the Main Zone (Winnarshoek norite-anorthosite). Two economically significant PGE-bearing layers namely the Merensky Reef and the UG2chromitite are found within the upper Critical Zone. These are approximately 140 m vertically apart, separated by a series of barren norites and anorthosites. At Two Rivers Platinum, only theUG2 chromitite layer is currently being mined for PGEs. The UG2 sub-outcrops north/south along the Klein Dwarsrivier river valley with a very gentle dip to the west of 7º?10º. At Two Rivers the UG2 averages about 120 cm in thickness, overlain by a waste pyroxenite parting about 20 cm thick, above which is a leader seam about 20 cm in thickness. The mineable cut consists of the leader seam, the waste pyroxenite parting, the UG2chromitite layer including 25 cm of pegmatoidal pyroxenite footwall, below the UG2 reef to a minimum of 185 cm trackless mining cut. The mining method is a mechanized bord and pillar layout, which will yield a total of 185 000tons at full run of mine production from the underground UG2 mine.

Heavy mineral deposits often contain relatively high levels of radioactive elements (thorium and uranium in particular).It is difficult to obtain clean separation of ilmenite and monazite (the main impurity mineral containing radioactive elements), and physical intergrowths of the two minerals are, in fact, not uncommon. As a result, ilmenite concentrates obtained from such deposits often contain high levels of thorium and uranium. Because of the large negative free energies of formation of ThO2and U3O8boththorium and uranium report to the slag during smelting and if an ilmenite concentrate contaminated with monazite is used to make high titania slag, the concentrations of these elements in the slag end up about 40% higher than in the ilmenite feed. Previous work, patented by RGC Mineral Sands Limited, and subsequently confirmed by Mintek, showed that radioactivity may be reduced by roasting an ilmenite concentrate with borax at 1000°C to 1100°C and leaching it with hydrochloric acid1. It is evident that the cost of an ilmenite roast/leach process will be high and there may be economic benefits in removing the radioactive elements from the slag instead (the volume of slag to be treated is smaller than the volume of ilmenite feed). To remove radioactive elements from the slag it is necessary to know how these elements occur in the slag. Inother words, the distribution of uranium and thorium between the various oxide, silicate and metallic phases in high titania slag must be determined. Once the deportment of thorium and uranium between the various phases ha sbeen determined, an appropriate process for slag purification can be developed. Test samples High-titania slag was prepared in a pilot-scale DC furnace from ilmenite concentrates with different levels of uranium and thorium. Subsequently, ten slag samples representing a range of compositions were selected for bulk chemical analysis, scanning electron microscopy and micro-analysis. The samples were crushed to a maximum particle size of 1 mm and from each sample a 20-kg batch was riffled out for analysis. Bulk chemical composition Chemical compositions of the samples selected for test work are given in Table I. TiO2, Al2O3, SiO2, MgO, MnO, FeO and V2O5were analysed by ICP-OES, Na2O, CaO andCr2O3by atomic absorption spectroscopy and U and Th by XRF (the XRF detection limit for U and Th was around 4 ppm). The ?B? series has a higher silica content than the others as a result of small silica additions that were made during smelting. All samples have elevated alumina levels as a result of furnace refractory contamination during smelting. As expected, there is an inverse relationship between the concentrations of TiO2and FeO in the samples (Figure 1).The TiO2and FeO levels are similar to the levels found in industrial slags2. Extreme conditions of reduction under which reduction of more ?refractory? oxides (e.g., chromia, magnesia, silica, alumina and even urania and thoria) might take place were not explored in the study. Note that BB1and BBB1 contain more than 7% combined silica and alumina (SiO2as a flux addition during smelting, and Al2O3from refractory contamination) and they do not fall on the general trend defined by the other samples. The U and Th concentrations of sample E2 is noteworthy. In the preparation of slag E2, monazite concentrate was added to the ilmenite to increase the concentrations of radioactive elements in the slag. This was done primarily to facilitate the detection of Th and U during the phase chemical characterization of the slag. The initial results obtained from the implementation of computer-controlled strategy on the milling circuit are reported. An analysis of these results showed that a peak-power pebble-mill controller on a high throughput hardrock wet-milling circuit reduces the stability of the system. It was concluded that the milling circuit should be regarded as a single system in which the measurement of grinding efficiency, circulating load, product size distribution, and feed rate should minimize the product variance and maximize the feed rate according to the grinding power available. Work is proceeding on such a system.

Based on information supplied by South African collieries to the Coal Mining Laboratory of the Chamber of Mines since 1978, the paper outlines the general performance of the continuous miners used and gives the results more-detailed studies of the cutting, loading, and transportation processes. On average, the continuous miners produced coal at a rate of 76 t per operating hour, which, at an average machine availability of 67 per cent, resulted in a production of 51 t per total hour. The cutting rates varied between and 250 t/h but, owing to machine and system inefficiencies, the overall production rate varied between 92 and 48 It is concluded that, if the collieries concentrated on improving their machine utilization procedures and operating practices, they could increase the overall production from their continuous-miner sections.

Labour-intensive narrow reef stoping, as traditionally practised in South African gold and platinum mines, is almost unique in the modern first-world mechanized mining environment. Shortcomings of the system include the ever increasing cost of labour, a cap on achievable productivity and a poor safety record, particularly in the field of rock-related accidents. In the absence of sustainable alternative technologies, the South African mining industry has spent millions of rands improving the present system, focusing on improving workplace safety. This paper details the changes to stope support at Impala Platinum?s Rustenburg operations, and the impact on rock-related safety performance. The authors and Iscor's management are to be congratulated on an interesting and detailed paper that discloses Iscor's philosophy, strategy, and action concerning what can also be termed productivity improvement. Aside from the pioneering work of Beeforth and Dicks regarding Dynamic Profitability Analysis at Vaal Reefs, there appears to be a shortage of papers on this topic from the mining groups.

It is common practice in the mineral processing industry to use hydrocyclones for particle classification. However, classification in the UG2 platinum circuits using the hydrocyclone poses major challenges due to the differences in density between silica and chromite, the two major components of this ore. Silica,-the PGM carrying component, has an average density of 2.7 and the barren chromite component has an average density of 4.5. When conventional and flat bottom cyclone are used there is a misplacement of particles due to differences in density leading to inefficiencies in the classification by size. As a result of the density effect, coarse silica reports to the overflow, resulting in loss of recovery, and fine chromite reports to the underflow, resulting in loss of milling capacity and unnecessary production of fine chromite. A classifier based on a different concept was required in the classification of UG2platinum ore. The three-product cyclone, which is a hydrocyclone with two concentric vortex finders to produce three distinct products, has been tested in the UG2 ore application and indications are that misplacement of particles due to differences in the component densities can be minimized through the use of this unit. Industrial and pilot plant trials were conducted and indications are that the three-product cyclone can be installed to selectively produce a middlings stream that can be screened using Pansep screens to provide a screen oversize, which is predominantly coarse silica that can be preferentially reground to recover the PGM values contained in the coarse silica.

A dynamic simulator of the leaching and adsorption cascades of a gold plant was developed and used to compare the effect of various disturbances on the overall efficiency of the plant. These comparisons show which disturbances most critically need to be controlled to optimize plant performance. The simulator was based on an existing gold plant. Dynamic and steady-state data were collected on the plant and were used in the modeling of the process. Simple dual-rate models are used to describe the leaching and adsorption processes. Mole-balances of various species take into account the changes of concentrations in the leach, and also the movement of pulp and carbon up and down the adsorption cascade. Fluctuations in the flow rate, density, and cyanide concentration of the feed to the leach have a negative effect on the efficiency of the leach, while carbon attrition was found to be an important factor in decreasing the efficiency of the carbon-in-pulp (GIP) section. Badly regulated transfers contribute towards the decreased efficiency of the GIP section, but overflows and carbon leakage have only a limited long-term effect. Various carbon profiles and transfer schemes were studied, and the results indicated that a slightly heavier loading at the bottom of the cascade is beneficial, while the type of transfer is relatively unimportant.

To understand the effect of thermal loading from HLW on the groundwater flow nearby, the coupling of TH in an equivalent porous medium is studied. Results indicate that under given conditions the alteration of groundwater flow by decay heat is localized phenomena. More comprehensive studies are underway for THM coupling. Zum Verstandnis fur die Wirkung der thermischen Belastung von HLW in der Nahe von Grundwasserstrom, ist die Verbindung von TH in den entsprechenden porigen Medium erarbeitet. Die Ergebnisse zeigen, dass unter vorgegebenen Bedingungen die Anderung von Grundwasserstrom durch Zerfallwarme lokalisiert wird. Zusatzliche umfassende Arbeiten sind fur die THM Kupplung auf dem Wege. Pour comprendre l'effet du chargement thermique de HLW sur l'écoulement d'eaux souterraines tout près, l'accouplement du TH dans un milieu poreux équivalent est étudié. Les résultats indiquent que dans des conditions données le changement d'écoulement d'eaux souterraines par la chaleur d'affaiblissement est des phénomènes localisés. Des études plus complètes sont en cours pour l'accouplement de THM.

There is a considerable wealth of information on the behaviour of rockbolts under axial loading conditions both in situ and under controlled laboratory conditions. However, there is comparably less data on the behaviour of rockbolts in shear. Several authors have contributed to the understanding of the behaviour of conventional rockbolts’ performance under shear loading. Much of this data have been gathered through experimental programmes conducted on sections of the rockbolt. Considering the continuous coupling between the rockbolt and borehole interface, the approach is justified. Due to the design premise of energy-absorbing rockbolts with discrete couplings, full scale testing is required to quantify the behaviour of the rockbolts. This paper reviews published results obtained from two testing facilities, which are the SINTEF rockbolt pull test rig in Trondheim, Norway and the Epiroc Combinations Shear and Tensile test rig in Johannesburg, South Africa, both capable of conducting full scale testing of rockbolts. Based on this high-quality database it was possible to identify three distinct responses of rockbolts in shear. The behaviour under load is controlled by the presence or absence of an encapsulation medium (resin/cement grout), the reinforcement mechanism, and whether the rockbolt is continuously or discretely captured. As a reference the results are compared to the performance in shear of conventional grouted rockbolts.

The utilization of centralized blasting systems is progressively becoming a feature of the South African mining industry, owing to increased pressure from the Department of Mineral Resources (DMR) to ensure safer blasting conditions. The purpose of a centralized blasting system (CBS) is to ensure reduced blasting-related incidents and to improve the underground working environment for the mine?s employees. The brief from Samancor Western Chrome Mines (WCM) pertaining to this study was to explore?at a conceptual level?all variables pertaining to the implementation of the CBS. Studies have indicated that Sasol?s SafeBlast? was preferred due to low overall risks and user-friendliness. Empirical observations, however, indicated that attention should be given to the current shaft-clearing procedure and to the installation of additional transformers. This is required to co-ordinate the power supply from 2 level to 10 level with the required supply of the network slave station. A cost analysis indicated that an electronically initiated CBS will result in a R24 cost increase per panel, which relates to a mere 1% cost increase per panel. This cost, in addition to the R1.1 million capital cost, proved to be negligible in comparison to the possible direct and indirect costs incurred by the mine in the event of a blasting-related incident. It was found that Samancor should conduct further studies incorporating the necessary requirements to ensure a successful transition, while considering all stakeholders on the mine. This study proved that the transition to a CBS would ensure safe and efficient blasting at Samancor?s Mooinooi Mine.

Compressed air is widely used on South African gold mines. However, due to recent and proposed future electricity tariff increases it is quickly becoming too expensive to produce and use. Boxfront chute systems at ore passes were focused on during this study, and a number of alternative power sources were examined. After comparing primarily costs, and secondarily safety and practicality, of a number of systems based on water and hydraulic oil, a system making use of either air or water was determined to be the most cost effective. A payback time of 8 years was calculated, which will be significantly less taking into account the avoidance of failures due to electricity and water shortages, which would not affect this system due to its ability to swap between either air or water. It was recommended that this system be installed at all boxfront chutes as soon as possible so that the company can begin to benefit from the cost savings.

Optimizing the public gains from the exploitation of mineral resources By Dr A. AZIS and Dr J. ZWARTENDYK Every nation must decide how it should exploit its mineral resources so as to contribute most to its national objectives. It is argued that the present value of the future corporate income tax flow derived.from mineral exploitation may serve as a useful indicator in moving toward a taxation policy that would contribute optimally toward the greatest public benefit. The future stream of corporate income taxes depends largely on the mineral endowment, consisting of deposits now being mined, known unmined deposits, and unknown deposits. Unknown deposits may be estimated by geological inference. Both known and unknown deposits can be categorized according to grade and size, and divided into economic and uneconomic deposits on the basis of certain prices, costs, rate of return and taxation levels. Computer simulations can be run of discounted cash flow models at various taxation levels to showthe impact of taxation changes on future tax revenues.

This paper explores how to apply system dynamics principles to surface mining problems towards understanding the consequences of mining efficiencies. Some simulation examples related to machine and people performance have been used to demonstrate systems engineering concepts to mining engineers. The simulation tool used is Vensim, which is widely used in industrial engineering applicable to systems thinking, and systems dynamics. The science and mathematics behind the system dynamics as well as benefits and typical challenges are discussed to explore the applicability to mining problems. The benefit of having one less drill is easily quantifiable with the developed model which is one of many other measurable benefits, using the developed model. Some of the benefits of the improved quality of drill holes are not fully quantified as this depends on the mine specific inputs. There are examples of quantifying this in the other industries using system dynamics tools.

It is often said in business that if you don't have a customer you don't have a business. The same rule applies to project evaluation; if you don't have customers you really don't have a viable project. It is therefore essential that in the early stages of project evaluation the following fundamental questions are addressed: ? What products will this project produce? ? Who are the potential customers? ? What are the customers' requirements with respect to grade and impurities? ? Do they have adequate capacity to take the production from the proposed project? ? Will the products introduce adverse effects in the customer's process circuits? ? Will additional waste streams requiring disposal be produced? In the past the attitude has been along the lines of the customer will take whatever we produce at the mine site. Times have now changed with customers now operating under much tighter environmental regulation with waste disposal becoming increasingly difficult. It would therefore be prudent that the principles of product stewardship be used as a tool in project evaluation. This paper will provide a general discussion on customer requirements and provide detail on case studies of the impact of mine products on smelter process circuits. It will provide examples where there were synergies between the mine product and the smelter circuit and where the mine product had adverse impacts on smelter performance.
