The integration of various highly sophisticated IT applications has been implemented at Bafokeng Rasimone Platinum Mine, a new platinum mine in the Anglo Platinum Group. This system is required to assist with compiling the necessary geological and grade information together with safety, environmental, ventilation, rock engineering and logistical constraints, to allow the design of the appropriate mining layout, to schedule this design, provide the necessary output for technical review and costing as well as budgeting to allow medium- and long-term business planning. In addition the production management and short-term planning needs must be met. This includes the plotting of all underground and surface infrastructure and excavations, giving the necessary mining and best cut instructions, daily production management, ore reserve and grade management as well as assisting with budgetary management. In addition all safety, health, environment and risk assessment requirements and legal requirements have to be met. The system at Bafokeng Rasimone Platinum Mine has met these criteria. Since 1955 extensive pressure-leaching testwork has been conducted by Anglo American Research Laboratories (AARL) in laboratory-scale batch autoclaves. In 1958asmall continuous pilot-plantof45 kgofsolids per hourwas operated by AARL. In 1974, when high uranium prices were anticipated, Anglo American, encouraged by successful commercial- scale autoclave operations as practised by Outokumpu, Sherritt Gordon, and Impala Platinum, decided to install a continuous pilot plant at Western Deep Levels. At that time the proposed pilot plant was considered to be of prototype size. The project was funded by members of the Nuclear Fuels Corporation (Nufcor). Since its commissioning in February 1977, the pilot plant at Western Deep Levels, which can treat between 10 and 20 tons of dry solids per hour, has been used to test ores from four different mines. The paper compares the uranium extractions and pyrite oxidation obtained in laboratory batch autoclaves with those obtained in the continuous pilot plant. In general, differences in uranium extraction are not great and can be explained; the differences in pyrite oxidation are less well understood. The effect on plant design of the evolution of carbon dioxide during leaching is discussed. Evaluation of the equipment and materials of construction would have been almost impossible in a small-scale batch autoclave. It is doubtful whether such results would have generated the necessary confidence to permit decisions to install a commercial-size plant. The development and performance of the multistage pumps, instrumentation, shaft seals, and shaft-seal water treatment are discussed. It is concluded that the operation of a largescale continuous pressure-leaching pilot plant to supplement laboratory batch autoclave tests has been a necessary part of the development of this process.

High-rate floc-blanket clarification of gold pregnant rotary filtrate was introduced at the Vaal Reefs South gold plant of the Anglo American Corporation during February 1978. A. daily 12 000 to 15 000 t of filtrate, with an average suspended-solids concentration of 350 mg/I, is continuously clarified to a concentration of less than 2S mg/I of suspended solids in a modified plant pachuca (10 m in diameter) at throughput rates of 7,7 to 8,5 ma/m2.h by the addition of 5 g/t of ferric chloride inorganic coagulant and 0,2 g/t of Superfloc NI00 flocculant. The pachuca overflow is then clarified further in seven Stellar candle pressure filters of 54,S m2 surface area to under 5 mg/I of suspended solids. The combined clarification cost when the hopper clarifier is used in conjunction with the Stellar filters is R0,0032 per ton of liquid treated, which is approximately 60 per cent lower than the cost of Stellar filtration on its own. The savings are mainly due to the reduced use of filter pre-coat, the consumption of which has dropped by 70 per cent since the introduction of hopper clarification.

The Tromp distribution curve was used in an evaluation of gravity separators treating a synthetic ore made up of silica and marker minerals of various relative densities. The results pinpoint differences in the concentration of particles of different sizes, and indicate how the grade of a concentrate is likely to vary with particle size. An increase in the feed rate increased the efficiency of the 'waterless' spiral concentrator that was tested, but the multiport spiral concentrator tested was more efficient. Both spiral concentrators were found to be more efficient than the pinched sluice and the shaking table that were tested. The method was found to be a useful way of evaluating gravity concentrators, but, for ease of analysis, care must be taken in the choice of marker minerals.

Rand (Member) Recent studies have shown that the overall extraction of gold from Witwatersrand ores is increased as the proportion of gold reporting to the amalgamation circuit is increased. Testwork has therefore been carried out with a view to improving recovery by gravity concentration. In this paper, the history of gold recovery by gravity concentration is reviewed, and methods and machines at present in use are briefly described. The results of plant and laboratory tests are presented, and the limitation of existing concentrators is discussed. A pilot plant is being built for the testing of improvements to the existing concentrators and of several new devices, particularly the Reichert-cone concentrator.

To B. K. Martus I discussed several points raised by Mr Martus in my reply to Professor Krige*. Mr Martus discusses several possible interpretations of optimum South African sales, but in my paper these sales refer to the sales level that maximized the working profit of the whole South African gold-mining industry over the past eleven years. Mr Martus also seems to be under the impression that the paper deals with the future. While there may be references to the future, and some implications for the future may be obvious, the paper deals essentially with the past eleven years.

The use of SO2/air gas mixtures as an oxidant to precipitate Mn from Co(II) leach liquors was investigated. The effects of SO2/air ratio, pH and temperature on Mn precipitation were evaluated. It was found that the use of SO2/air gas mixtures resulted in significantly higher Mn precipitation kinetics compared to using air or pure O2 alone. The SO2/air ratio was varied from 0% to 6% SO2(v/v) in air and similar Mn removals were achieved at 0.75% to 3% SO2 at pH 3. The solution pH was varied from pH 2 to pH 4; Mn precipitation did not increase considerably from pH 2 to pH 3, but increased significantly at pH values higher than pH 3. Cobalt co-precipitation also increased as pH increased, with 1% Co co-precipitation at pH 3. An increase in temperature from 30°C to 60°C also increased Mn precipitation and 100% Mn precipitated at 50°C. Cobalt co-precipitation also increased significantly with an increase in temperature. An activation energy of 25 kJ/mol was calculated from the Arrhenius plot, which is an indication that the precipitation reactions were both chemically and diffusion controlled. XRD analysis showed that Mn precipitated in the form of Mn2O3 instead of MnO2 that was predicted from thermodynamic data. SEM and XRD analysis also revealed that the precipitate consisted mainly of gypsum or bassanite (99%), with the Mn containing phase (< 1%) distributed within the gypsum phase. Mine water poses a significant problem in lignite coal mining. The drainage of mine water is the fundamental prerequisite of mining operations. Under the legislation of the Czech Republic, mine water that discharges into surface watercourse is subject to the permission of the state administration body in the water management sector. The permission also stipulates the limits for mine water pollution. Therefore, mine water has to be purified prior to discharge. Although all mining companies operate mine water treatment plants, there is hardly any utilization of the final effluent. The high expenditure involved in the more sophisticated methods of mine water treatment has fuelled the search for the commercial utilization of the effluent.

An account is given of the performance of a 37 MVA electric-arc .furnace in which bottom stirring with inert gas by an indirect-contact stirring-plug system was applied. The system, which was developed and patented by Thyssen-Stahl AG, and which is the first inert gas stirring system to be installed in South Africa, was commissioned in January 1992. Initial problems were experienced due to the blockage of stirring plugs by molten steel. The causes of these malfunctions are examined, and an account is given of how they were overcome. The system is described and evaluated. A comparison with direct-contact stirring systems shows why Iscor Vereeniging Works considered it to be more suitable for their Vaal Melt Shop. The results show that, through the successful application qf this technology, Iscor Vereeniging Works has achieved an annual cost saving of more than R2,5 million.

In situ leaching tests with thiourea as the lixiviant were caried out in two worked-out stopes at the No. 6 shaft at Rand Leases Gold Mining Company. Dissolution rates of 0,9 and 0,7 9 of gold per week per 100 m2 of footwal area were achieved. A major disadvantage of the method seems to be the slow rate of dissolution of the gold, which is probably caused by poor contact and slow mass transfer between the lixiviant and the gold surfaces. Under full-scale application, the loss of lixiviant by leakage could also be a very important factor. Furthermore, the oxidation products of thiourea may &apos;poison&apos; the activated carbon that is used for the recovery of the gold. The method may therefore be economically viable only in stopes that contain high values of residual gold.

The minerals industry needs the support of al sections of the population if it is going to be able to supply the new materials required for future development. It will achieve this support only if its image is good. Perceived images of the minerals industry are examined in respect of history, technology, environment, safety, education, and economics. Concern is expressed about the low technological image of the industry and the declining number of students enrolling in minerals-related disciplines. It is concluded that it is the professionals, through institutes like The South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy, who must take the lead in improving the image of the minerals industry. The Presidential Address gives data to support this thesis; data that, is hoped, can be used in efforts to educate people about the minerals industry.

The use of hydraulically placed backfill in the deep gold mines of South Africa has increased rapidly over the past decade. The backfill that is delivered to the placement areas has a relatively high moisture content, and it is therefore pumped into geotextile containment bags that allow excess water to drain out but retain solid particles. The specific problems associated with this process that are addressed in this paper include the loss of solid particles entrained in the excess water, the rate of strength gain of the backfill, and the post-placement shrinkage of the backfill. The results of laboratory, surface stope, and underground tests are described. The parameters that were varied included the slurry density, the particle-size distribution, and the feed rate of the slurry the concentration of added flocculant; and the type of geotextile used as containment. Suggestions are given for the optimization of the placement properties of backfill.

(Visitor) An account is given of an investigation of the use of a continuous particle-size monitor - the PSM-IOO. The monitor system, in addition to showing marked variations in grinding fineness over short periods of time, particularly after stopping and re-starting the feed to the mill, has indicated weaknesses in accepted mill operating practice. The main potential of the system is the opportunity it has provided for almost complete automation of the milling circuit.

The investment decision under uncertainty by H. M. WELLS, Pr. Eng., M.Se. (Fellow) The future outcome of a proposed investment is uncertain at the time the decision must be made to accept it or reject it. This uncertainty can be expressed in the form of a probability distribution. An attempt is made to rationalize the investment decision under these circumstances, especially when the range of possible outcomes extends into both the acceptable and unacceptable domains. A rigorous definition of risk is proposed, and a criterion of risk aversion is developed that forms the boundary between acceptable risk and unacceptable risk (called the loss limitation line). It is shown that this decision criterion can also serve as a quantitative yardstick in the evaluation of various possibilities for &apos;tailoring&apos; the proposal to mlke it more compatible with the particular financial circumstances of the company concerned.

Mostert This publication records the proceedings of a con¬ference convened to deal exclusively with prospecting in areas of desert terrain. The meeting, organized jointly by The Institution of Mining and Metallurgy (London) and the Ministry of Energy and Mines, Morocco, was held in Rabat from 14th to 17th April, 1985, and generated considerable international interest. Exploration cam¬paigns and case studies of successful discoveries in the desert areas of more than 14 lands are described. Since large areas of South Africa, Botswana, and Namibia are characterized by and and semi-arid terrains, this publication should be of considerable interest to explorationists and mining engineers engaged in the search for and development of mineral deposits in southern Africa. The fact that the desert terrains of southern Africa are host to a number of important base-metal (Aggeneys, Gamsberg, Prieska, and O&apos;Okiep) and diamond deposits (Orapa, Jwaneng) has ensured continued interest in these areas from the viewpoints of exploration and mining.

ABSTRACT: Stiffness controlled test procedures performed with servo-controlled shear systems are the most versatile for simulating the wide range of boundary conditions expected in nature. Examples of a function controlled procedure in addition to dilatation controlled procedures are discussed for different characteristic behaviours. A series of experiments was caried out in a vacuum-induction furnace to investigate the solubility of nitrogen in stainless steel type 3100S. Melts were made under constant and variable partial pressures of nitrogen so that the absorption of nitrogen from the atmosphere could be examined. Additions of nitrogenized ferochromium were made to give high nitrogen contents in the steel. Nitrogen contents of up to 0,16 wt per cent were obtained under gaseous atmospheres. With additions of nitrogenized ferochromium, nitrogen contents of up to 0,525 wt per cent were obtained. Comparisons of the later value with existing data indicate that the equilibrium concentration of nitrogen was reached for the experimental conditions used.

In South Africa, the Bushveld platinum group metal deposits are unique in that they are the largest platinum group metal deposits in the world. These deposits occur as two distinct stratiform tabular orebodies and strike for many hundreds of kilometres. Mining is extensive, with depths ranging from close-to-surface to 2 000 m. The mining method is a variation of planar open stoping. Pillars are widely used to support the open stopes. Crush pillars are commonly used in this role, where the residual pillar strength provides the required support resistance to stabilize the stoping excavations. This paper describes the direct measurement of stress within these crush pillars, and describes the stress?strain behaviour of these pillars. These findings indicate that the measured pillar failure stress is too high. The implications of these findings are that roof damage and pillar bursting could occur, and some examples of this type of damage are shown. The paper concludes that this problem could be mitigated if the three dimensional pillar geometry were modified and the pillars were cut smaller.
