The use of hydraulically placed backfill in the deep gold mines of South Africa has increased rapidly over the past decade. The backfill that is delivered to the placement areas has a relatively high moisture content, and it is therefore pumped into geotextile containment bags that allow excess water to drain out but retain solid particles. The specific problems associated with this process that are addressed in this paper include the loss of solid particles entrained in the excess water, the rate of strength gain of the backfill, and the post-placement shrinkage of the backfill. The results of laboratory, surface stope, and underground tests are described. The parameters that were varied included the slurry density, the particle-size distribution, and the feed rate of the slurry the concentration of added flocculant; and the type of geotextile used as containment. Suggestions are given for the optimization of the placement properties of backfill.

SYNOPSIS Changes in the national productivity (gross national product per head of the population) have been assessed in order to derive a target figure for the required annual increase. The conclusion reached IS compared with the targets of the economic development programme of the Republic. Productivity and management structure in the gold mining industry is then analyzed together with investment in plant, machinery and equipment for rock handling purposes. The conclusion is drawn that productivity improvement does not appear to have accorded with the massive expenditures in plant and equipment, and in augmented management. The productivity of the manufacturing and construction sectors of the economy has been examined. The principal difficulty is that the main avenue of approach is the value of product divided by the total labour force. This introduces inflationary questions, and the use of a suitable deflator becomes of prime importance. Severa1 different methods of assessing the productivity improvement in the industrial sector have been used with what is regarded as a comparatively high degree of compatibility. Improvements in productivity in the manufacturing industry up to 1966 appear, from the information available, to have substantially exceeded comparable figures for the mining industry. There is however evidence that thereafter productivity of the manufacturing industry has not maintained this satisfactory rate of increase. If the economy is to achieve the planned rate of expansion, there is no doubt that greater attention to this aspect will be required in the future than has been accorded to it in the past.

Additions of boron have been found to increase the hot workability of stainless steels. Boron forms complex chromium-iron borides, primarily at grain boundaries but also on delta-ferite stringers. This paper describes how a nuclear technique based on the track-etch method was used to distinguish between borides and chromium carbides on grain boundaries and to investigate the distribution of boron in stainless steels. The method was found to be sensitive for boron, and made it possible for boron precipitates to be identified on grain boundaries and interphase boundaries.

Wettability of graphite by synthetic SiO2-Al2O3-CaO-MnO slags with varied MnO content and by industrial slags was studied at 1350-1600 °C using sessile drop method under argon atmosphere. Initial contact angle was the lowest (110-115o) for the MnO-free slag. For slags with 10-40 wt% MnO, the initial contact angle was in the range 125-135o. The contact angle decreased with the contact time. The change in the contact angle with slag mass was found insignificant. The surface tension of slags obtained from the drop shape analyses was 500-800 mN/m and varied in a narrow range with temperature and MnO concentration. The reduction rate increased with increasing MnO content in the synthetic slag from 20 wt% to 40wt% and temperature. Increasing temperature also increased the rate of reduction. No correlation was observed between the reduction rate and MnO content in the synthetic slags in the range 0-20 wt% and in the industrial slags. The rate of SiO2 reduction from the molten slag was close to the rate of MnO reduction. The MnO-free slag had the largest contact area with graphite substrate. This paper outlines an investigation into the recovery of saleable fractions of coal from ?as-arising? South Export Plant effluent streams, using Baleen microscreening technology. South Export Plant, a subdivision of BHP Billiton Energy Coal SA (BECSA) Coal Processing, is a two-module plant treating 2000 t/h. The nominally -150 µm coal is untreated and is therefore passed from classifying cyclones to the thickeners for process water recovery. The thickened underflow is pumped into a series of slurry cells for further settling and recovery of supernatant water. The marginal quality, moisture content, and handlebility of this settled material renders it unsuitable for inclusion into saleable products and it is thus stockpiled and trucked to designated pits for disposal. Over the years, stockpiling and trucking has become an overly expensive exercise. In an effort to recover some of this cost, a task team was assigned to investigate less costly options to process slurry across BECSA plants. Various technologies such as froth flotation, sieve bends, and Reflux Classifier were considered, although the results were generally not beneficial ? this could be attributed to weathered/oxidized coal. A decision was made to pursue an alternative approach by testing the suitability of the new ?Baleen Filter?. The concept is to screen out the higher-grade fraction (+50 µm) as saleable product and reject the finer fractions to the slurry ponds. The Baleen Filter was found to effectively screen at an acceptable efficiency between 94% and 99.99%, with a very sharp cut-point (d50 and Ep). The actual yields from the screening results were better than the predicted yields in terms of both mass and energy as predicted from feedstock analysis.

On the one-hundredth anniversary of the founding of the South African School of Mines, this paper presents a historical review of the tertiary mining education carried out by the School of Mines in Kimberley and the subsequent institutions in Johannesburg. In addition to recording and evaluating a century of mining education, it describes the current activities of the Department of Mining Engineering at the University of the Witwatersrand, which is believed to be the natural successor to the School of Mines. The comparison of earlier and contemporary academic mining activities reflects a gradual transition from the educational philosophy and objectives of a school of mines to those of a modem university department. In the conclusions, some aspects of the educational effort expended during the past hundred years are briefly highlighted.

AUTHORS' REPLY TO DISCUSSION In his contribution to our paper Dr Lloyd makes two criticisms: The first criticism, as we interpret it, is that the agglomerate flotation process that we described is not really necessary because previously described processes effect almost the same results or could be made to give the same results by including sufficient paraffin in the reagent combination.

Geological mapping makes an important contribution to orebody knowledge during the evaluation of structurally controlled gold veins. Orebody knowledge comprises an understanding of mineralization characteristics relevant to evaluation, mining, processing and environmental issues and allows project expectations to be realistically set. Structural interpretation to define continuity and mineralization controls is a key part of geological risk reduction and the reporting mineral resources using the JORC and other codes. The Dolgellau gold belt is a small British field that produced an estimated 150 000 oz from narrow quartz veins. Historical records, recent exploration and production data, published material, and accessible surface and underground exposure provide a valuable case study. Previous mapping has shown the general geometry of vein systems, but tends to accentuate gross geological continuity. Recent work has attempted to determine internal vein architecture and examine the significance of the historical views of ore shoot controls. The work resulted in the definition of vein continuity scenarios for the gold belt and evaluation expectations associated with each. This has, in turn, led to a realistic view of what can be achieved from an evaluation and project development perspective.

The stability of pillars is analysed on the assumption that pillars shed load in a stable manner if the slope the strata load-deformation relation is steeper than that of pillars in the post-peak regime. Concepts of local stiffness, mine structural stiffness, and critical stiffness are discussed. Procedures are described for the determination of strata stiffness for various pillar layouts by use of the available boundary-element computer programs. The postpeak stiffness of pillars is assessed from the available data relating to the post-peak load-deformation relationship and width-to-height ratio. Stability analyses are carried out by the contrasting of strata stiffness with post-peak pillar stiffness. It is shown that the strata stiffness becomes unacceptably small for a stable yield-pillar layout when the span exceeds about 5 times the depth. The strata stiffness is found to increase, thereby increasing the stability, as the span-to-depth ratio, number of pillars, and percentage extraction are decreased. It is also found that the stability in a yield pillar becomes difficult to achieve when al the pillars in a layout are in the descending part their post-peak load-deformation curve

The prediction of rock properties from indirect testing methods is important, particularly for preliminary investigations since indirect tests are easier and cheaper than the direct tests. In this study, we investigate the predictability of the uniaxial compressive strength (UCS) and Brazilian tensile strength (BTS) of rocks from the indentation hardness index (IHI) obtained using point load apparatus. Forty-six different rock types, 14 of which were igneous, 15 were metamorphic, and 17 were sedimentary were tested in the laboratory. The UCS and BTS values were correlated with the corresponding IHI values and the results were statistically analysed. The influence of rock classes on the relationships was also investigated. A strong correlation between UCS and IHI was found for all data. The correlation between BTS and IHI is not as strong as the correlation between UCS and IHI. However, it is in the acceptable limits. When the regression analyses were repeated for igneous, metamorphic, and sedimentary rocks, the correlation coefficients were generally increased. The results show the UCS and BTS can be estimated from IHI. In addition, the effect of rock classes on the relationships between IHI and both UCS and BTS is important.

Much of the technology and methodology extensively employed in current mining operations is in the mature phase of its lifecycle and, consequently, subject to the principle of diminishing returns. It is probable that future gains in productivity and safety of the magnitude essential for the sustained economic viability of the industry will be derived only from a determined technological development programme. The history of trackless mechanized mining, which represented a radical change in methodology in deep-level gold mines, is reviewed. The benefits and obstacles to the realization of the full potential are highlighted. Similarly, an overview is given of alternative mechanization developments in South Africa. In addition to the development and application of advanced technology, an envelope of operating parameters relevant to each methodology must be engineered to facilitate the site-specific selection of the most appropriate. Furthermore, a mechanism for the evaluation of cost effectiveness is essential to the decision-making process. The narrow, tabular orebodies of relatively low dip that are encountered in the South African hard-rock mining industry make the design and manufacture of a comprehensive range of stoping equipment extremely difficult. The machinery that has been available to date has demonstrated only limited site-specific success. The development of suitable machinery must necessarily be initiated and driven by the South African mining industry in collaboration with the major equipment manufacturers in the world.

About 90 percent of the coal mined underground in the U.S.A. today is mined by the room-and-pillar system. The productivity of the system dropped from about 14,1t per man-day in 1969 to about 7,3 t per man-day in 1978. Since 1974, the U.S. Department of Energy (formerly the U.S. Bureau of Mines) has been engaged in research to improve the production and productivity of the room-and-pillar system. The effort involves the development of integrated, automated, and remote-controlled equipment and systems including remote-controlled continuous miners, automated miner-bolters, automated extraction systems, continuous haulage systems for use behind miners, and remote-controlled equipment for miners, bolters, and shuttle cars. These systems are discussed briefly, the discussion being related primarily to coal winning, although the concepts could be utilized in room-and-pillar systems in mines other than coal mines.

Discussion by P.J Lloydt Broekman and Penman describe (J.S. Afr. Inst. Min. Metal., vol. 91, Aug. 1991, p. 261) the addition of sodium cyanide and zinc sulphate to the flotation feed at Prieska. They note that for 'safety sake, lime was added to the rod mil to raise the pH to 9,5', and that 'personnel working in the vicinity of the rod mil were required to wear gas masks'. Author reply to P.J. Lloyd We thank Dr Lloyd for his interesting contribution. As he correctly points out, the Prieska float had run with cyanide solutions at pH values of 6,4. In fact, it ran safely for extended period with the pH slightly below 6.

SYNOPSIS The effect of conditioning energy on the flotation of gold, U308, and pyrite was investigated in the range 0,1 to 100 kWh per tonne of dry ore for various combinations of conditioning time and impeller speed in a cylindrical con¬ditioning tank. It was found that, when the conditioning energy was increased to between 5 and 10 kWh per tonne of dry ore, the total recovery and flotation rate of the valuable minerals (expressed as Klimpel parameters) increas¬ed substantially. The Klimpel parameters are dependent on conditioning energy, but are independent of condition¬ing time or impeller speed (at constant conditioning energy). The Klimpel parameters of the gangue are indepen¬dent of conditioning energy.

The use of large flotation machines is well established, resulting in substantial savings in both capital and operating costs. High-temperature phase relations in the Pb-PbS system were established by the quenching of samples equilibrated in evacuated and sealed silica capsules. The liquid-miscibility gap seen in some previously published phase diagrams was not observed. The thermodynamic activities of PbS in liquid solutions of this system were derived at 1473 K from the isopiestic equilibration of samples belonging to this solution series with Cu2S-PbS melts of known PbS activities. The behaviour of Pb-PbS melts was found to be compatible with a subregular solution model. This model also made it possible to obtain an analytical liquidus for PbS that was in excelent agreement with the experimental determination.

Results are presented on the elution of gold cyanide and base-metal cyanide complexes from strongand weakbase resins. It is shown that thiocyanate anions, zinc cyanide anions, and thiourea in acid solution are effective eluants of strong-base resins, but that it is generally necessary for electrowinning to be incorporated in the elution cycle if fast rates of elution are to be achieved. Weakbase resins are eluted with sodium hydroxide solution, which is shown to be far simpler and far more effective than the elution of strong-base resins. The effects of parameters such as concentration of the eluant, temperature, and electrowinning efficiency on the rate of elution of the resins are examined.

Traditionally it has commonly been believed that the only problem with inductive reactance in a submerged-arc furnace is that it leads to difficulties with the electricity supply as a result of the Iow power factor. This paper sets out to show that inductive reactance can also give rise to the following problems in the metallurgical operation of a furnace: (i) dead and live phases (fairly well known in openarc furnaces), (ii) lack of sensitivity to electrode movement, (iii) interactions between electrodes. These problems increase with increasing inductive reactance relative to resistance, and thus they increase with furnace size. Each of these effects is discussed in detail, and suggestions are made for their alleviation.
