In this paper, which is aimed to serve as a review article, first of all a breakdown of the earth?s total water reserves is given. The usage areas of water in the mining industry are mentioned and these uses are briefly outlined, together with the main pollution potential of each. According to this, most of the water (almost 80% of it) is utilized in processing. Later on, probable damages that the mining would give to groundwater as a result of acid mine drainage, heavy metal pollution, euthrophication and deoxygenation is described. Finally, the measures and controls that should be taken against water contamination in mines are presented.

A modified germanium recovery process in conventional zinc metallurgy, based on the understanding that ferric hydroxide has strong ability to coprecipitate germanium element, was presented. The relaxed lab-scale experiments were conducted to evaluate its technological feasibility. The experimental results obtained show the new process has great competitive advantage over the conventional one.

Experience with Mars pumping of underground water by N. E. K. SCHUTTLER (Visitor) As the result of a planned increase in production, Vaal Reefs Exploration & Mining Company Limited increased the hoisting capacity of their existing equipment to its fullest extent and installed Mars pumps and a washing plant. The layout of the installation is described, and details are given of the modifications made to overcome its weaknesses. Plans to change the present four-stage system to a seven-stage system are outlined.

Historical Background. South Africa's industrial history began with the discovery of gold and diamonds during the last century, and the mining industry was the first chief component of our technological development. During the past six decades, quantum leaps were made in other fields, too, when other industries and research bodies such as Escom, NDC, Iscor, Sasol, Foskor, Alusaf, Mintek, cs I R, SA B S, and A E C were established. These meaningful additions have two outstanding characteristics. Firstly, they were linked mainly to primary activities such as energy and minerals and, secondly, their establishment was to a large extent due to the driving force of individuals such as Van der Bijl, Van Eck, Rossouw, Schonland, and Roux, rather than to impersonal government policy. Encouraging signs of the evolution of such policy has emerged during the past few years.

The International Colloquium on Developments in Froth Flotation, which replaced the Annual University of Cape Town (UCT)/University of Stelenbosch (US) Minerals Processing Symposium, was held at the Van Riebeeck Hotel in Gordon's Bay on 3rd and 4th August, 1989. The Colloquium attracted 150 delegates from the mining, metallurgical, and chemical industries, including 9 from overseas.

The effect of varying aliphatic, olefinic, and aromatic groups in the N- and S-positions of dithiocarbamates was investigated in the selective and bulk flotation of a mixed copper-lead-zinc-iron ore. Selective and bulk flotation were found to be dependent on the type of functional group, as well as on the position of substitution.

The substitution of functional groups in covalent trithiocarbonate collector molecules influences the selective and non-selective bonding of collector molecules to mineral surfaces, as well as flotation efficiency in a mixed sulphide ore. These effects were concluded to be related to the metal-sulphide solubility products and electron densities on the sulphur atoms in the collector

A description is given of the general geology, structure and minerals of economic significance of the Loolekop copper orebody at Phalaborwa. The open pit mining method is described with details of drilling, blasting, loading, hauling and primary crushing operations. A brief description is given of mine planning and its relationship to the control of the mining operation.

The first commercial Corex Plant in the world capable of producing liquid iron from a variety of low-grade coals was commissioned in 1990 by Iscor at its Pretoria Works. The Plant has an annual production capacity of 300 kt of liquid iron. Because the compulsory use of coke is eliminated, the new method offers an economic and revolutionary alternative to liquid-iron production. Coke used in traditional blastfurnaces is manufactured from high-grade coal of which the available sources in South Africa are limited.

Methods based on regionalized variables theory, commonly known as geostatistics, have been widely used since more than three decades to predict/estimate spatial distributed data, namely mineral resources, with quite good results. However, some restrictive theoretical assumptions, such as the need of some kind of stationarity of data and the linearity of the predictor/estimator, are often wrong options in many applications. An alternative approach based on a finite mixture modelling, or cluster weighted modelling (CWM) technique, is presented and compared, in its theoretical and practical aspects, with the geostatistical methodology. CWM is a general non-linear framework based on the estimation of joint density functions allowing the calculation of the conditional probability function of the target values given their locations. Validation tests are performed in a 2D case study, where testing data proceeds from a soil contaminated by a heavy metal. The results of ordinary kriging and CWM estimations show a very good agreement with actual data. This article examines the stability analysis of intake tunnels of Karun III dam & power plant. The tunnels have been excavated with a 3-dimensional and fairly complicated geometry in Pabdeh weak formation rocks at Zagros region. Due to the particular excavation geometry and inapplicability of plane-strain status, the stability of these excavations has been analyzed using both the 3D elastic software Examine 3D and the 2D non-elastic software UDEC simultaneously. The geomechanical parameters have been estimated by back analyzing the measured displacements from instruments, which were installed in the tunnels, and the parameters have been used in non-elastic numerical model. The results of the analysis show that the strains occurred in surrounding rock mass are less than the allowable failure strain and that the tunnels are stable. In addition, considering the results of non-elastic 2D analysis, the areas with unstable potentiality were identified and after the instability occurred at the areas predicted by the model , it was stopped up to the allowable strain limit through installing additional support . Bei diesem Artikel handelt es sich um eine Analyse der Festigkeit der Eingangstunnel des Damms und Elektrizitätswerks “Karoon III”.Die Tunnel haben drei Dimensionen und eine sehr schwierige Form und sind in brüchigen Felsen in “Pabedeh ,in Zagrossgebirge”eingebohrt.Aufgrund besonderer Form der Bohrung wurde ihre Festigkeit durch elastische dreidimensionale Soft-ware analysiert,die gleichzeitig die drei-und zweidimensionale unelastische Soft-ware UDEC benutzt hat.Die geometrische Parameter sind mit Ausnützung der Analyse berechneter eingesetzter Versorgungen,die in Tunnel aufgebaut sind,bewertet.Und diese Parameter sind in Zahlen-Analyse benutzt.Die Ergebnisse dieser Analyse zeigen,dass die Drücke an Felsen weniger als problematischer Grad der Drücke sind und die Tunnel fest sind.Ausserdem wurde mit einem Einblick auf die Ergebnisse der unelastischen zweidimensionale Analyse die eventuellen unfesten Teile bestimmt.Nach entstandener Unfestigkeit an diesen Teilen wurde die problematischeDrücke für Aufbau mehrere Anlagen gestoppt. Cet article examine l'analyse de la stabilité de tunnels de la prise de Karoun barrage III et centrale électrique. Les tunnels ont été excavés avec une 3 dimensionnel et compliqué géométrie dans Pabedeh que la formation faible balance à région Zagros équitablement. Dû à la géométrie de l'excavation particulière et inapplicabilite de statut de tension plane, la stabilité de ces excavations a été analysée en utilisant les deux le 3D logiciel élastique Examen 3D et le 2D logiciel non - élastique UDEC simultanément. Les paramètres du geomechanical ont été estimés en analysant le déplacement mesuré d'instruments qui ont été installés dans les tunnels et les paramètres en arrière a été utilisé dans les modèles numériques non - élastique. Les résultats de l'analyse montrent que les tensions se sont produites dans masse du roc environnante est plus petit que la tension de l'échec admissible et que les tunnels sont stables. De plus, les régions avec potentialité instable ont été identifiées étant donné les résultats de 2D analyse non - élastique, et après que l'instabilité se soit produite aux régions prédites par le modèle, il a été arrêté jusqu'à la limite de la tension admissible à travers installer du support supplémentaire.

Sixteenth to seventeenth century Kalanga miners dug a series of sub-vertical shafts into a 10 to 30 m wide zone of copper ore at the Thakadu Mine near Matsitama, Botswana. They went down at least 6 m in search of thick malachite veins. The host rock was hand 'cobbed' to remove the veins, which were then smelted nearby in small bowl furnaces. Evidently, the furnaces lacked clay superstructures, since a simple pit was sufficient to smelt the almost pure malachite. The copper bloom was probably refined in villages further away.

The increasing transportation of solids by pipeline, in South Africa and internationally, replacing the conventional transportation methods of rail, road, and conveyors, has resulted in much research into this area of solids transportation. Pipeline wear continues to be an area of specific concern, since it constitutes a major cost during the life of a pipeline installation. Wear data from an accelerated wear test and actual pipeline tests are presented. Trends in the performance of the pipeline materials tested are discussed, and possible solutions to the problem of pipeline wear are presented.
