Contribution by G. Narsimhan It was with much pleasure that I went through D.F. Malan's excellent paper. The following explanatory and critical note has been the result of my deep study of the paper. Although by qualifications and experience I have been a chemical engineer, involved over four decades with problems in the modeling and simulation of transport-limited (heat and mass) chemical reactions in multi-phase systems, I have of and on interested myself in challenging problems in extractive metallurgy. This is the first time I have veered of to continuum mechanics, at the age of 71! Author's reply. I thank Professor Narsimhan for his extensive contribution to the paper. It provided me with the stimulus to derive an extended model. However, there are some inaccuracies in his arguments that need further discussion. Professor Narsimhan's main concern is that there is not a good enough fit between the derived viscoelastic Kelvin model and the experimental data supplied by Güler1 (see Figure l1 on page 218 of my paper). I will therefore explain the choice of a viscoelastic model in more detail and also make specific comments on the arguments given in his contribution.

Ferricyanide ()()*is one of the most stable cyanometallic complexes present in the gold mining effluents. This cyanocomplex is hard to degrade by natural attenuation and generates a negative impact on aquatic environments. Although free cyanide (CN-) can be obtained by acidifying the solution, the CN- is lethal for all forms of life. The oxidation of ()()* in a typical photocatalitic system was evaluated with the addition of H2O2. To verify the degradation, chemical parameters, such as free cyanide, the formation of ammonia, nitrate, and total iron were analysed at the end of the process. The degradations obtained were up to 70% in a heterogeneous photocatalysis system with TiO2, and a low rate of dissociation was observed by photolysis. The best result was achieved with the H2O2 and TiO2 photocatalytic system, and the stoichiometric concentration was about 2.5 times less than the peroxide used in the real gold mining industry, reaching 83% degradation. The photocatalytic process obtained less toxic byproducts than the original synthetic ferricyanide used as mining wastewater. Mrazovka tunnel was excavated under one building whose subsurface space was not possible to reinforce against additional settlements induced by digging. In the presented contribution the risk analysis, warning levels and results of deformation measurements are described. Iron ore samples representing the input and output of several jigging experiments were analysed to determine the effect of particle size, shape, and density on jigging performance. Traditionally, the manual measurement of the size and shape of individual particles is very tedious and prone to inaccuracies and inconsistencies. Using a novel multi-view imaging technique the 3-dimensional representations of each particle in the sample was determined. From this representation several size and shape measurements were extracted, and these were correlated with the individual particle density measurements. A rigorous investigation into the confidence associated with density and the size and shape features as a function of sample size was conducted, thus allowing the significance of correlations in the data to be determined. The jig?s performance was seen to be clearly sensitive to density and markedly so to particle size, while the results for shape indicated the need for continued work in the definition of particle shape.

"Portions of the Icy Cape placer Au district have been described and exploited since the early 1900s. Industrial studies of Au-bearing garnetrich intervals established a 3.5 million troy ounce resource in the western half of the district. This estimate is not compliant with CIM and SME definition standards for Mineral Resources and Mineral Reserves. We note high variability in the textures of sediments and their heavy mineral (HM) content and composition in the district, probably as a function of the depositional environment. Sediments are medium- to fine-grained sands with a valuable HM assemblage that averages 26.0% in a range of 1.1– 72.6%. Valuable heavy minerals (VHMs) garnet, magnetite, ilmenite, rutile, and zircon, but excluding Au, average 7.9% in a range of 1.0–37.6% of the HM assemblage. Trace quantities of uraninite, thorite, monazite, xenotime, and others are noted. Garnets have an average Y content of 726 ppm with a range of 0–2150 ppm. Energy-dispersive X-ray fluorescence confirms compositions commensurate with Ca, Al, and Mg silicates. We provide empirical analytical data and note high variability in the textures, HM content, and compositions as a probable function of depositional environment. Icy Cape District land and resources are owned by the Alaska Mental Health Trust Authority and managed by the Trust Land Office (TLO). IntroductionThe Icy Cape Heavy Minerals (HM) District in Alaska subtends more than 200 km2 fronting the Pacific Ocean and backing to the foot of the Robinson Mountains at about 1700 m above sea level. We classify the district into geomorphic provinces; the eastern region as deltaic (Figure 1) and the western region as coastal plain (Figure 2), based on geomorphologic expressions. The coastal plain is entirely built up of unconsolidated outwash sediments and ancient beach sand deposits."

The wear of steel pipelines used for the transportation of backfill slurries is frequently regarded as an erosion problem only. An investigation was undertaken of the likely contribution to the total 'wear rate' made by corrosion. Use was made of a pipe flow loop with catholically protected specimens and corrosion inhibitors. Laboratory electrochemical tests utilizing a rotating-cylinder electrode were also conducted. The slurries used were classified tailings from two mines at a relative density of 1,7. The velocities were between 2 and 4,9 m/s. Substantial decreases in the wear rate of up to 80 per cent for one slurry and up to 67 per cent for the other were obtained with the use of corrosion control, showing that corrosion and, more importantly, interaction between erosion and corrosion, contribute a significant portion of the overall wear in steel pipelines

Finsch Diamond Mine, part of De Beers Consolidated Mines (DBCM), is situated between Kimberley and Postmasburg in the Northern Cape, South Africa. The kimberlite pipe was discovered in 1960 and De Beers assumed full mining rights three years later. Production commenced in 1966 from an opencast mine, and the operation moved underground in 1990 by developing and implementing a new mining method of blast hole open stoping. A mechanized block cave was brought into production in 2005. While block caving was not new to DBCM, with productive caves having operated in Kimberley and Cullinan, from the outset, the Finsch caving operation was designed as the most advanced with a semi-automated ground handling system. The extraction level was laid out as a single sided herringbone system due to the very poor ground conditions on the south side of the pipe. These factors combined to create a unique environment, which necessitated a completely new approach to draw control. The required system was developed by a team consisting of DBCM personnel from head office and Finsch, GEMCOM and Sandvik-Tamrock, the equipment manufacturers. It was essential that the system could be run quickly, provide daily updates and issue calls directly to the LHDs. It was also important that the base data were obtained from the resource model, which was to be depleted on a monthly basis, thus forming a close link between mine planning and draw control. A further requirement of the system was that it would form a central database for the extraction operation where all data pertaining to delays and changes in conditions, be they production or ground condition related, could be recorded and analysed. The design brought together empirical rules and tables developed at Cullinan plus concepts from programming developed for the front cave at Koffiefontein so that the new system was based on sound practical experience. These facets were incorporated into PCBC (GEMCOM) and CMS and PCS (Sandvik-Tamrock programmes). The system has now been operational for just under a year and while modifications have had to be made, it has proved itself as a practical and reliable tool with which to manage the draw control at Finsch. The system is unforgiving and has forced the production team to focus on the specified drawpoints. Problems have been encountered but most of these have been related to re-educating a workforce, familiar with a flexible mining method, to the strict discipline required for a modern block cave.

The gas turbine industry is faced with a challenge to improve the performance of engines, while simultaneously adhering to stringent environmental legislation. One way of addressing the problem is by further increasing the recipient working temperatures. Unfortunately, the use of nickel based superalloys (NBSAs) in the gas turbine industry has reached its limitations. Although coatings can be used for small increases, and air cooling is also incorporated by design, attention is towards developing stronger metallurgical materials having higher melting points, with acceptable creep and corrosion resistance. A series of ternary and quaternary Platinum-based superalloys were developed. Platinum was selected because of its higher melting points compared to nickel, similar fcc structure and better corrosion properties. Mechanical characterisation studies of Platinum-based superalloys alloys, which included oxidation, creep and hardness, demonstrated reasonable results, outperforming an oxide dispersed strengthening (ODS) Fe-based superalloy (PM2000) and a nickel based superalloy (MAR-M200). During any materials development where high temperatures are concerned, high strength is the primary property of interest. However, during the development of gas turbines, component life and reliability, which are influenced by temperature, need to be taken into consideration, and therefore creep as well as corrosion (both temperature dependant properties), are important. These properties become significant with increasing temperatures. With increasing demand for higher temperatures, it is becoming increasingly important to include hot corrosion properties of the alloy during the material selection process. A short description on hot corrosion and its degradation mechanisms are given in this paper. Coatings are currently dominating as the best practical solution to address temperature increases. This paper looks at benefits and shortcomings of coatings over Pt-based superalloys as candidates for applications under extreme conditions. Cassiterite is considered to be the only economically significant tin mineral in the earth's crust, and in its purest form has a tin content of 78,6 per cent. South Africa has limited deposits of the mineral, and by its exploitation contributes about 2 per cent of the world's production. This paper gives a brief history of tin mining in South Africa, which dates back almost 3000 years. Over the intervening years, many tin-mining operations have flourished and as quickly disappeared. At present there are only three tin mines in operation, and a description is given of the methods of mining, concentrating, and smelting that are used. The properties and uses of tin are listed, together with relevant statistics.

Dredging is an industry in constant transformation. It has changed tremendously in the last decades. The traditional dredging activity, like construction and maintaining ports and harbours, desilting of drainage and irrigation channels, keeping reservoirs at depths and removing sediments from waterways, is still of importance. However, it is surpassed by other applications of dredging technology. Reclamation is an important example, where large amounts of sand are dredged, transported over large distances and used to make new land for industrial, housing, airport and other infrastructural purposes. Beach nourishment and other protective measurements should be mentioned here as well. Other applications like offshore winning of oil and gas, environmental clean-up, mining of interesting minerals like gold, diamonds, titanium and tin as well as aggregates from inland and offshore deposits are of importance. For all of these dredging applications equipment is required, and with changing circumstances and constraints, the design and use altered significantly. Larger dredging depths and increasing capacities require an impressive scale-up of equipment and tools. A demand for higher accuracy and selectivity set the requirement for a higher level of automation and control in combination with a well trained crew. Operations under more difficult circumstances and with other soil characteristics necessitated the development of new dredging components and systems. A sound basis for all developments was and still is a better understanding of the various dredging processes. This paper will highlight some eye-catching developments in the dredging industry. It will focus on issues in the field of hydraulic transport such as ever increasing capacity and dredging depth, as well as the pumping of large size materials.

For some years the Collieries Research Laboratory of the Chamber of Mines of South Africa has been engaged in the development and application of computer programmes to aid in the solution of rock mechanics problems. It is the purpose of this paper to introduce some of the programmes having general applicability. A system capable of predicting stresses and displacements induced by large-scale tabular excavations is discussed. A finite element programme especially designed for handling layered continuum problems, and which is being used extensively has been supplemented by an automatic mesh generation facility that reduces problem preparation times considerably. Some typical applications of these programmes are described. An entirely new approach, potentially capable of performing linear three-dimensional continuum analysis at practical cost is introduced.

Zincor operates four Lurgi fluidized-bed roasters at its roast-leach-electrowin refinery in Springs, South Africa. In 2006, Zincor?s four roasters had reached ages ranging between 26 and 38 years, while the expected life of this type of roaster is generally 20 to 25 years. Roaster 3 was the first to be rebuilt in 2006 because its condition had deteriorated the most. Roaster 4 is being rebuilt in 2007 and the last two roasters will be rebuilt over the next few years as necessary. The main damage to Roaster 3 was caused by buckling of the roaster steel shell. This caused the freeboard and dome areas to shift, resulting in cracks in the dome brick lining and crumbling of the bricks lining the freeboard. The steel shell buckled owing to the combined effects of excessively high operating temperatures and corrosion. These were caused by the following two main factors: ?Thicker external insulation was installed during a previous maintenance shut, which resulted in an increased steel shell temperature and exacerbated the normal metal fatigue ?SO2/SO3 containing gas that had permeated the brick lining passed through its dew point during frequent planned and unplanned shuts over the life of the roaster. This caused acid formation between the refractory brick lining and steel shell, resulting in corrosion of the shell. The initial plan was to replace only the damaged areas of Roaster 3, but when it was dismantled more damage was found, and the roaster was rebuilding from the tuyeres upwards. During there building the opportunity was taken to modify the design of some of the brickwork to extend its life and make future repairs easier. This paper discusses the mode of failure of Roaster 3 and the lessons learnt during its dismantling and rebuilding.

High-profile failures of tailings dams illustrate the significant safety challenge they pose. The decant pond of such facilities plays an important role in their mechanical stability. This study investigates the feasibility of using public multispectral data collected by the Sentinel-2 satellite mission to monitor the area of the decant pond. The Sentinel-2 mission has a revisit time of 5 days and the data used herein has a spatial resolution of 10 m/pixel. We considered two water-detection metrics: the normalized difference water index (NDWI) and the near-infrared (NIR) reflectance. Implementation of the method at a South African platinum tailings dam illustrates the capabilities and limitations. Public, sub-metre resolution true-colour imagery served as validation data. There is good agreement between pond area measurements based on Sentinel-2 and the validation imagery. These results suggest the feasibility of using Sentinel-2 data to supplement the monitoring of the decant pond.

In this study the applicability of a batch press to predict the energy consumption and particle size distributions for medium-pressure roller presses was investigated. The relationships between energy consumption, feed size and product size are discussed with reference to Hukki?s interpretation of Bond?s and Rittinger?s laws, as well as the particle size parameter used. It was found that the comminution laws have limited utility for the characterization of the performance of the medium-pressure roller crushers or the batch press used, and also depend on the particle size distribution indicator used. It was also found that the batch press is not a suitable simulator for medium-pressure roller mills as it was notable to predict the energy requirements, or to predict the size distributions that would be obtained for the ores evaluated.

Owing to the strategic value of organic solvents, an investigation was conducted on the reduction of solvent losses at the Buffelsfontein solvent-extraction plant. It was established that the major cause of the high solvent losses was the high content of suspended solids in the uranium pregnant solution. To improve the clarification of the pregnant solution, it was decided to replace the conventional sand clarifiers that were being used at that stage. After pilot-plant tests had been conducted, a circulatorclarifier 16 m in diameter was installed to treat 9000 m3 per day of pregnant solution containing approximately 500p.p.m. of suspended solids. The clarifier was commissioned successfully, and yielded an overflow containing approximately 80 p.p.m. of suspended solids compared to the previous value of 250 p.p.m. This reduction in suspended solids immediately resulted in a decreasing trend In losses of organic solvent, finally yielding a reduction in these losses of approximately 50 per cent.

During the past five years, several research projects on the causes of mining induced seismicity have been carried out by the Rockburst Research Department at Western Deep levels Limited. This paper summarizes the results of these investigations. Several types of mining-induced seismic events are addressed, and models of their mechanisms are presented. It is shown that most of the seismicity results from mining in geologically disturbed areas, and ways and means are discussed to reduce the seismic potential. Stabilizing pillars, for instance, have been introduced to reduce stresses at the stope face and to alleviate the facebursting problem. Facebursts still occur in areas of very low stresses, and pillars became the source of very large seismic events (M >3). At this stage, the understanding gained of pillar-associated events allows a review of current mining practices. Further, it makes possible an examination of the efficiency of measures to alleviate the effects of various seismically prone situations.

The use of computers in the South African coal mining industry has increased during the 1980s. Applications at mine level commenced in the financial and personnel areas of payroll systems, mine accounting procedures and staff record keeping. More use is made now on mines of technical programs for purposes such as mine planning and mine survey calculations. The Coal Mining Laboratory of the Chamber of Mines Research Organization has provided, for a number of years, a service to Chamber member collieries in regard to the application of technical computer programs. Programs presently in use for simulating production procedures and conveyor belt transport systems are described. In addition, reference is made to the collection, storage and analysis of data concerning the performance of continuous miners over a period of eight years. More recently a computer program for the simulation of the cutting action of continuous miner cutting drums has been developed. The use of this program to assist with drum design is explained. The fact that many requests to make use of the programs are received from collieries is an indication of their acceptance by industry. Their interest in running the programs themselves on their own desktop computers has led to the need to convert the software for microcomputers.

The investigation, which was conducted at Iscor's Newcastle works (in Natal), was aimed at the development of reliable, consistent, and cost-effective methods of sampling. In the sampling of hot metal, it was found that lollipop and spoon samples had identical sulphur analyses, and negligibly different silicon analyses. Thus, spoon sampling of the hot metal was implemented, with a resultant saving of over RIOO 000 per annum on lollipop samplers. In the sampling of steel, aluminium -killed samples were found to have lower phosphorus analyses than titanium killed samples. Spoon sampling was rejected in this application since the use of titanium wire would be too costly. It was decided that titanium would be used as the deoxidant in lollipop samples of steel, and that the Leco carbon! sulphur analyser would be used as the sole arbiter of sulphur content.
