1. INTRODUCTION We have a moral responsibility towards the world to reduce the harmful deposits we emit into the environment arising from beneficiation technologies. Industry has not willingly spent money to limit these emissions because it affected their profit margin with the end result of emitting harmful elements into the environment. Governments have thus rightly stepped in and enforced systematic reduction of these emissions through legislation. In the past beneficiation of sulphur bearing ores was typically done through hydro-metallurgical concentration, smelting, followed by Sulphur removal by converting processes like the Pierce Smith converter. The latter two processes emitted substantial quantities of Sulphur into the atmosphere. Spiralling costs and legislation have resulted in the quest to develop more efficient and environmentally friendly processes to achieve the same end results. New hydro-metallurgical processes like the ActiVox process has completely eliminated the pyro-metallurgical processes. Kansanshi are also operating a similar process. It however elicits other ground water and spillage pollution hazards and problems of it?s own. Various improvements has also been made to the pyro-metallurgical stages, examples being combined smelting and converting with the Noranda reactor, the Codelco CMT furnace, one step flash smelting/converting or the Mitsubishi continuous smelting, converting and slag cleaning process. The new converting processes are also normally enhanced using oxygen leading to higher SO2 gas strength with only a marginal increase in off-gas volume. These processes have led to better efficiencies and a more controlled environment that reduces pollution, but does not eliminate it completely. The fact that there are still more than 70 existing Pierce Smith converter plants throughout the world that needs to be replaced or upgraded at tremendous capital cost, means that we will have the environmental problems for some time to come. The need thus exists to cost effectively get these existing plants into a state where they meet the new environmental regulations, community and safety requirements. This paper will concentrate on just one aspect of this quest, i.e. reduction/removal of off-gasses emanating from the converting of non ferrous sulphur mattes to achieve higher or specialised grades of refined metals.

As the price of gold increased, so did the viability of mining previously abandoned unpay areas of Stilfontein Mine. After an assessment to confirm the profitability of mining these areas, it was necessary to re-establish access-ways such as haulages, cross-cuts, and travelling ways. Openingup is a labour-intensive, relatively slow operation, and attempts were made to mechanizeand speed it up. Some of the techniques applied and the results achieved, whether successful or not, are discussed.

This paper is based on the Townlands Ore Replacement Project whereby the concept of conventional sinking of one large diameter shaft was declined and replaced with three smaller raise bored shafts. A wire line geophysical survey was done and the results indicated that a single shaft larger then 4 m diameter unsupported would not be suitable. The shafts were placed 28 meters apart measured from centre to centre. To ensure that the skin to skin pillars between the shafts remained regular and to minimise any deflection, the pilot holes were drilled with the Rotary Vertical Drilling System. The different shaft sinking methodologies are discussed explaining the risk associated with each method.

The material presented is taken from studies conducted overseas, and it is recommended that similar studies should be conducted on mixtures containing South African coals, which differ from the coals of the northern hemisphere

Recovery of precious metals from hydrochloric solution using sulfur-impregnated carbonaceous adsorbent was examined. Sulfur-impregnated adsorbent with adsorption abilities of precious metals can be prepared from activated carbon using pyrolysis at 600 oC under 10 % H2S gas flow, and the adsorbed Au and Pd were precipitated as metal phase on the surface of the adsorbent. The adsorbents after precious metals adsorption were burned at 700 oC to obtain the residue mainly containing precious metals. The adsorbent was found to be highly efficient and selective for the uptake of precious metals, especially Au, in the presence of excess base metal ions from simulated spent automotive catalyst eluted solution using a column pack test. The assessment of the stability performance of open pit highwalls has traditionally been based on consideration of surface movement rates. Although generally accepted in industry, this approach presents challenges for establishing appropriate threshold values to allow for safe mining operations and does not address the issue of total strain. Surface movement monitoring data from a limited number of open pit mining operations in North and South America has been evaluated in terms of highwall strain, rock mass quality and inferred mechanism of instability. Threshold strain levels for key stages of highwall stability proposed from previous work has been reviewed and are endorsed based on evaluation of additional data. An empirical highwall strain criteria for the assessment of highwall stability performance is postulated based on relatively consistent trends in highwall strain data. L’évaluation du niveau de stabilité des hauts murs de carrières a traditionnellement été basée sur les taux de mouvements de surfaces. Bien que cette approche soit généralement acceptée à travers l’industrie, elle présente des défis pour la définition de seuils appropriés concernant la sécurité des opérations minières et n’adresse pas la notion de déformations totales. Des données de mouvements de surface provenant d’un nombre limité d’opérations minières à ciel ouvert d’Amérique du Nord et du Sud ont été évaluées en terme de déformation des hauts murs, de qualité de la masse rocheuse et des mécanismes inférés d’instabilité. Des seuils de déformation pour différentes phases clefs de stabilité de hauts murs ont été revus et sont endossés, basé sur l'évaluation de donnés additionnelles. Un critère de déformation empirique pour l’évaluation de la stabilité des hauts murs est postulé, basé sur des tendances relativement consistantes de données de déformations de hauts murs. Die Beurteilung der Stabilität von hohen Felsböschungen basiert traditionellerweise von Oberflächenbewegungen. Obwohl dieses Verfahren im Allgemeinen akzeptiert wird, stellt es jedoch gewisse Probleme für die Festlegung von Grenzwerten für die Sicherheit dar. Die totalen Dehnungen werden bei dieser Betrachtungsweise vernachlässigt. Eine beschränkte Anzahl von Oberflächenbewegungs Daten von Bergbauwerke in Nord- und Südamerika sind in Bezug auf die Dehnungen von hohen Felsböschungen, Felsqualität und davon abgeleiteten Bruchmechanismen untersucht worden. Grenzwerte für die Belastung von hohen Felsböschungen während den massgebenden Bauetappen aus bisherigen Projekten sind begutachtet und durch zusätzliche Untersuchungen bestätigt worden. Gestützt auf relativ konsitenten Trends, ist hier ein empirisches Verfahren der Dehnungen in hohen Felsböschungen zur Beurteilung der Stabilität vorgestellt.

Nuclear waste should be disposed with the best warranty for the national health and welfare. Among the several repository systems, the deep underground disposal is considered to be a most suitable system in Korean peninsula. However it demands basically the comprehensive stability analysis such as the behaviour of discontinuities in rock mass, the behaviour of ground water, and the reaction of rock stress according to the heat from the nuclear waste. For these purposes, the underground nuclear waste disposal repository was simulated in two- and three- dimensions. It shows that emphasis will be given to the thermal conductivity of discontinuities and the thermal convection of ground water as well as the thermal stress generated by the nuclear waste for design and construction of repository system, and they should be obtained from the field measurements. Déchets nucléaires devront tre déposés avec la meilleure garantie pour la santé et le bien public. Parmi les plusieurs systèmes de dépôt, la disposition en souterrin profond est considérée au système le plus approprié en Corée. Pourtant ce système demande essentiellement l’analyse éten-due de stabilité comme le comportement des discontinues en masse rocheuse, le comportement de l’eau souterrin et la réaction des contraintes de roche selon la chaleur depuis les déchets nucléaires. Pour ce but, le dépôt des déchets nucléaires en sous-sol a étè simulé en deux et trois dimensions. Il montre que l’accent sera donné à la conductivité thermale des discontinues et la convection thermale de l’eau souterrin aussi bien que la contrainte thermale générée par les déchets nucléaires pour le plan et la construction du systèmes de dépôt, et ils devront tre obtenus depuis les mesures sur place. Die Kernwüste muß mit der besten Gewähr für die nationale Gesundheit und die Wohlfahrt angeordnenet werden. Unter einigem Fundgrubesystem, das tief unterirdisch Wegwerfen werde in Betracht das passendest System in der koreanisch Halbinsel gezogen. Jedoch, es verlangt grundzätzlich die umfassend Stabilitätsberechnung so wie das Behnehmen mangelnder Konti-nuität in der Felsmasse, das Behnehmen des Grundwasser, und die Reaktion der Felsenbelastung nach der Hitze von der Kernwüste. Für diesen Zwecke, die unterirdische Wegferfenfundgrube der Kernwüste wurde in der zwei und drei Dimensionen gesimuliert. Es beweist daß die Betonung wird zur thermisch Leitfähigkeit mangelnder Kontinuität und thermisch Konvektion des Grund-wasser sowie die thermisch Belastung ergezeugt durch die Kernwüste für den Entwurf und die Konstruktion des Fundgrubesystem gegeben werden, und sie müssen von den Feldmaße ergelangt werden .

Computer analysis, modelling and optimization of gold recovery plants of the Anglo American Group by M. I. BRITTAN M.Sc. (Eng.), M.S., Ph. D., (Member). and E. J. J. van VUUREN M.Sc., (Visitor). Multiple correlation and regression techniques are used to analyse gold plant operating records. Key variables m the process which Influence the gold recovery are Identified and assembled into a mathematical model. This constitutes a valuable tool for the optimisation of variables such as the rates of reagent addition and for assessing the economics of extending the plant. Substantial short term economic benefits have been realized. The techniques provide a rapid diagnostic service without interfering with normal plant operation. Quantitative results are presented and their implications examined. The value of the method is discussed.

After a short summary of the historical milestones of the submerged arc furnace, the paper will highlight different applications and their specific smelting furnace requirements in the non-ferrous area. Additionally, aspects of rectangular furnace design and the features of the copper cooling system for the side wall will be emphasized. Finally a state-of-the-art design tool as well as a new invention to improve slag cleaning technology will be featured, which shows great potentials especially for the PGM and copper related industry. The flotation performance of 2-(benzylthio)-acetohydroxamic acid (BTHA) to diaspore was first evaluated by micro-flotation tests. The adsorption mechanism was further investigated through adsorption experiments, molecular dynamics simulation, zeta potential and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The results demonstrated that BTHA had a stronger ability to collect diaspore in comparison with another diaspore collector, benzohydroxamic acid (BHA), especially under the condition of weak alkalinity, the flotation recovery can reach 90%. The more negative interaction energy (ΔE) between BTHA and diaspore from molecular dynamics simulation results revealed that BTHA had an easier adsorption ablity onto diaspore than BHA, which matched with adsorption results. The paper presents details of the costs and outputs being achieved by South African mechanized tunneling and stoping drillings. The information was gathered from various hard-rock mining and tunneling operations ranging from deep-level gold mines to shallow base-metal mines. The survey included older pneumatic rigs and the newer electro-hydraulic rigs, but excluded shaft drilling and the stope drillings that were developed recently for narrow reefs. The information presented is intended as a guide to those having to decide whether to use mechanized drillings and, if so, what type and quantity

Selective photo reduction, using the semiconductor TiO2 under UV irradiation, has been investigated as a possible recovery and/or separation method for the PGM's rhodium, palladium and platinum. The effect of pH value and concentration of the sacrificial reducing agent (ethanol) on the rate of reduction of Rh (III), Pd (II) and Pt(IV) ions have been determined separately for these ions as well as for some mixtures. Conditions favourable for the reduction and adsorption (or precipitation) on TiO2 have been established. It has been found that already deposited Pt or Pd metal promotes reduction of Rh (III) ions at a pH value where it would not otherwise be reduced. A method for the separation of a mixture comprising Rh (III), Pd(II) and Pt (IV), based on photo reduction and adsorption on the TiO2, is proposed.

This study applies attainable region analysis to optimise cobalt recovery from oxidised ores via reductive leaching with sulphur dioxide and sulphuric acid. The attainable region framework enables systematic visualisation of trade-offs between cobalt yield and sulphur dioxide loss, guiding reactor network design beyond conventional mass balance modelling. Experimental column leaching trials, supported by validation runs, were conducted under controlled flow and reagent conditions. Kinetic parameters for cobalt dissolution and sulphur dioxide consumption were used to simulate reactor trajectories and construct attainable region envelopes. To ensure hydrodynamic realism, residence time distribution tests confirmed partial plug flow behaviour with dispersion effects, justifying the use of hybrid reactor models in the attainable region simulations. The results revealed that increasing recirculation ratios improves cobalt yield while reducing sulphur dioxide losses, with attainable efficiencies exceeding 90% cobalt recovery and < 20% sulphur dioxide loss. Importantly, the study proposes practical reactor network configurations for future implementation, including staged percolation columns with intermediate mixing zones, oscillatory flow reactors, and modular fluidised bed systems. These designs offer scalable pathways to translate attainable region-based optimisations into industrial practice. Compared to traditional modelling, attainable region analysis provides a geometric decision support tool that captures multi-objective trade-offs and reactor interactions, offering novel insights for continuous leaching system design. This work advances the application of attainable region methodology in minerals engineering by bridging theoretical optimisation with practical reactor design, supporting sustainable cobalt recovery from both primary ores and recycled feedstocks.

Gold bearing deposits in the Witwatersrand consist predominantly of narrow tabular conglomerates with quartzite host rock. Extensive mining of these deposits at depth results in significant stresses being induced in the periphery of the tabular excavations. Where remnant pillars are created excessive stresses have resulted in the dynamic failure of the abutments. At the Hartebeestfontein Mine four brittle shear zones have recently been exposed and investigated. For most part, they represent abutment failure into the weaker hangingwall strata, striking parallel to the abutment, dipping towards the stope, with a sense of displacement consistent with closure of the stope from above. These shear zones are similar to those described in various publications by Ortlepp2: they are essentially brittle shear zones characterised by the presence of very finely comminuted ‘rock flour’ on an obviously freshly sheared surface. The angle between the shear zone wall and extension fractures indicate the sense of shear and the intersection of the extension fractures with the shear zone walls define a strong lineation normal to the direction of slip. It is suggested that these structures are referred to as ‘mining induced dynamic brittle shears’. Les gisements d’or du Witwatersrand consistent principalement de conglomérats tabulaires peu épais contenus dans une quartzite mère. Une exploitation poussée de ces gisements en profondeur a pour résultat l’apparition d’importantes contraintes induites à la périphérie des excavations tabulaires. Là où des piliers restants sont créés, des contraintes excessives ont eu pour résultat une rupture dynamique des appuis. Dans la Mine d’Hartebeestfontein, quatre zones fragiles de cisaillement ont été récemment exposées et étudiées. Dans la plupart des cas, elles représentent une rupture des appuis dans les strates moins solides de la paroi suspendue, orientée parallèlement à l’appui, inclinée en direction du chantier d’abattage avec une direction de mouvement consistante avec l’affaissement du toit de la galerie d’abattage. Ces zones de cisaillement sont similaires à celles décrites par Ortlepp2 dans diverses publications: Ce sont essentiellement des zones cisaillement fragiles caractérisées par la présence de « farine de roche » très finement réduite sur une surface évidemment fraîchement cisaillée. L’angle entre la paroi de la zone de cisaillement et les fractures de tension indiquent le sens du cisaillement et l’intersection des fractures de tension avec les parois de la zone de cisaillement définit une forte délinéation perpendiculaire à la direction du glissement. Il est suggéré que l’on se réfère à de telles structures comme des « cisaillements dynamiques fragiles induits par l‘exploitation ». Goldablagerungen im Witwatersrand bestehen überwiegend aus schmalen tabularen Konglomeraten mit Quarzitwirtgestein. Der umfangreiche Abbau dieser Ablagerungen in der Tiefe resultiert in signifikanten Drücken, die auf die Peripherie der tabularen Aushöhlungen wirken. Wo Restpfeiler hergestellt wurden, resultierten exzessive Drücke im dynamischen Versagen der Auflager. In der Hartebeestfontein Grube wurden kürzlich vier spröde Scherzonen freigelegt und untersucht. Zum größten Teil representieren sie Auflagerversagen im Stratum der schwächeren Stollenfirste, parallel zum Auflager verlaufend, in Richtung Abbaustelle abfallend, mit einem gewissen Grad an Verschiebung konsistent mit der Schliessung der Strosse von oben. Diese Scherzonen sind jenen ähnlich, die in den verschiedenen Publikationen von Ortlepp2 beschrieben werden: sie sind im Wesentlichen spröde Scherzonen, charakterisiert durch das Vorhandensein des sehr fein pulverisierten „Gesteinsmehls“ auf einer offensichtlich frisch abgescherten Oberfläche. Der Winkel zwischen der Scherzonenwand und den Bruchverlängerungen deutet die Richtung der Scherung an und die Kreuzung der Bruchverlängerungen mit der Abscherzone grenzt sich gegen eine starke Lineation normal zur Richtung der Lehne ab. Es wird vorgeschlagen, daß diese Strukturen als `vom Abbau verursachte dynamisch spröde Scherungen’ bezeichnet werden.

An account is given of the production of three types of experimental high-chromium duplex stainless steel. The alloys had chromium contents of 22, 29, and 35 per cent. The partitioning of the main alloying elements between the austenite and ferite phases was determined, and the effect of the alloying elements chromium, nickel, and molybdenum on the mechanical properties and corrosion resistance of the duplex stainless steels is summarized. The phase compositions of the different duplex stainless steels were measured by different techniques, and the values obtained were correlated. The cracking occasionally observed during the thermo mechanical processing of these alloys was studied, and is explained as being the result of known embritlement processes.
