Platinum metal was first utilized by the Inca civilization in South America where it was found in alluvial deposits along the San Juan and Atrato rivers that lie between the Andean mountain range in Colombia and the Pacific Ocean. The nuggets found in these rivers average between 77% and 86%platinum, 7%?8% iron and small amounts of copper, gold and other Platinum Group Metals (PGMs). The Incas often alloyed platinum with copper to increase its workability and fabricated various ornaments from it. With the arrival of the Spanish in the early 1700s, platinum was labelled a nuisance for the Spanish in their quest for alluvial gold because it concentrated with the gold and had to be removed by either extended amalgamation or by hand sorting. It was at this time that platinum received the root of its current name for the Spanish referred to it as platina del Pinto, platina being the somewhat derogatory diminutive of plata (silver). Pinto was a river in Colombia where the Spanish first distinguished it. The English eventually adopted ?platina? and it is only in recent times that the Latin name platinum has been accepted as the metal?s common English name. From its first introduction to European scientists in 1740, platinum was unappreciated because of its brittle nature and difficulty of working and as a result had little commercial value. Its ability to be dissolved in gold did lead to some counterfeiting of gold bullion and even to the debasement of gold currency.

Weakening rocks by taking advantage of microwave-induced microcracks is a promising solution for comminution processes. This paper investigates the effects of microwave treatment of the rock/or samples in single and multi-mode cavities. Based on the experimental results of using a 2.45 GHz microwave generator, the performance of different cavity setups and their impact on the energy effectiveness of the microwave irradiation was examined. Physical interpretations were drawn from multiple experiments with a relatively wide range of power rates and exposure times. Both basalt and kimberlite samples were used in experiments, and their results were systematically compared. For single-mode cavity tests, a microwave applicator waveguide antenna was placed at different distances from the samples to evaluate the effects of sample positioning on microwave heating, both numerically and experimentally. Eventually, cavity performance was assessed by using calorimetric test results, and strength decay was documented based on the spallation of the samples. It was found that the singlemode cavity setup has unique properties that can significantly improve the electromagnetic heating and therefore, strength degradation process. Residual collectors and their byproducts (e.g., CS2) in flotation effluents can cause water contamination and even result in serious health hazards to humans and animals, Therefore, residual flotation reagents should be removed properly before discharge or recirculation into flotation circuits. In this work, four thiol collectors (potassium ethyl xanthate (EX), sodium diethyl dithiocarbamate (SN- 9), O-isopropyl-N-ethyl thionocarbamate (Z-200), dianilino dithiophoshoric acid (DDA)) were chosen as model pollutants. The collector removal, mineralisation and byproduct formation were compared by sole O3 and O3/UV185+254nm. The degradation rate constants of thiol collectors by O3/UV185+254nm were 2~6 times higher than those by sole O3. The mineralisation of collectors was also remarkably enhanced by O3/UV185+254nm. The degradation efficiency by O3/UV185+254nm had the order: EX>SN-9>>Z- 200>DDA. The Z-200 and DDA were refractory flotation reagents. The degradation of thiol collectors caused the reduction of solution pH and the increase of ORP and conductivity. However, the O3/UV185+254nm achieved more evident changes of these parameters than sole O3. During the degradation of thiol collectors, less than 4% of total sulfur in collectors was emitted into air as CS2 and H2S. Compared to sole O3, the O3/UV185+254nm had additionally included UV185+254nm photolysis and O3/UV254nm, resulting in higher efficiency in removing collectors. The O3/UV185+254nm was an effective process in treating mineral flotation wastewaters containing organic reagents. Since the dismal performance of the Rand Mines management was called to account by its shareholders in 1994, the waves of change have continued to ripple across the South African mining industry .The number of listings on the gold board of the Johannesburg Stock Exchange, that once numbered 40 or 50-odd, have now dwindled to no more than a handful as unprecedented restructuring has taken place. The redefining of the industry has not been limited to the gold sector, but across the base metal, coal, diamond, platinum and industrial mineral sectors as well. At the same time the Mining Houses began to reconsider their funding strategies. Originally established in the early part of the century to ensure the long-term sustainability of their group mining operations by providing substantial financial muscle and technical support, the Mining Houses were faced with a rapidly changing political environment, which proved to be a critical catalyst in giving momentum to the change. Furthermore, the significant development costs and increasing risk profile for new projects, coupled with pressure from shareholders demanding respectable returns, opened the door to opportunities for banks to begin providing external debt by the way of project finance. However, the provision of long-term debt to the South African mining industry had generally not been common since mining companies had financed new projects with equity, or with the cash flows from existing operations. Those banks that had the appetite for exposure to the perceived high risks of the mining sector rapidly built up specialist resource banking divisions capable of addressing the increasing demands of the industry. The application of project finance, the principles of which were developed in the 1970s specifically for infrastructure projects and privatization, is now commonly applied in the financing of greenfield and brownfield mining projects. This paper outlines the approach that lending banks would typically adopt when arranging or providing mining project finance, their usual areas of concern and the way in which the finance is structured to mitigate the many inherent risks.

The use of electrolyte additives to smoothen cathode deposits during copper deposition is practised worldwide. These additives absorb on the cathode surface and take part in the electrochemical crystallization process. However, these additives also affect the quality of the cathodes when they are inadequately controlled. Electrolyte additives used by Palabora are glue, thiourea, Avitone and chloride. Their effects were determined on cathode quality, the size of the current density region that gives the desired compact morphology, and current efficiency. This was done in a small-scale cell. Small cells have different hydrodynamics from industrial-scale cells, which makes it difficult to simulate the operation of industrial cells in a laboratory. The approach used here was to use a rotating cylinder cathode to attain controlled hydrodynamics. The rotation speed was chosen to give a diffusion layer thickness that is similar to that of an industrial-scale cell. It was shown that even fairly small changes in the additive levels can significantly affect the cathode morphology, and the current density range over which this morphology can be obtained. Metal casting is one of the most important operations in ferroalloys factories. After the tapping of the furnace and the depuration of the metal, the preparation for customers with cooling, crushing and sizing begins. In total production costs, this contains around 8 % of the total cost of the metal, depending on the value of the fines and other important parameters. From an investment point of view, this represents around 20% of the total capital for a new furnace. Casting onto a water-refrigerated copper plate is not new for molten metals. In steel, continuous casting machines are normal in every factory. Water granulation casting exists at some ferroalloys plants. However, the majority of plants and production technology still use the technology of lumping, crushing and sizing. This technology is time consuming, produces fines and requires a relatively large work force. In 2001, Ferroatlantica put into operation a new water-cooled copper casting-machine, which seems to be a very convenient solution to solve all these problems. It is in operation at a silicon factory; the same place where the new ELSA electrode was developed for silicon metal production. This paper describes our experiences using it.

A pilot plant paste thickening campaign was conducted at the Anglo Platinum Limited Mogalakwena South Concentrator plant in South Africa in order to determine the water saving capability of P&TT technology. In the process a simple water consumption model was developed for estimating the overall water consumption of the mine. The model indicates that for the Mogalakwena tailings, significant water savings are achieved by discharging thickened tailing directly to the TSF but only at densities where free water release at the TSF is close to zero. The roasting of sulphide ores and concentrates is often the first step in the production of metals or chemicals. In many processes, the production of sulphuric acid is viewed as a by-product, whereas in some plants production is an important economic factor. Regardless of the purpose, a pyrite roasting plant consists of mainly three plant sections: roasting, gas cleaning and sulphuric acid. With the addition of air, the pyrite concentrates are transformed into solid oxides and gaseous sulphur dioxide at temperatures of 600?1000°C. After cleaning and cooling, the sulphur dioxide in the roasting gas is further processed to sulphuric acid. Two types of reactors are used depending on the application: stationary or circulating fluid bed. For over 60 years, Outotec has progressively been developing the principle of fluidized bed technology in several different reactor types for a multitude of process applications. The versatility of the fluidized bed reactor system has manifested itself in the treatment of minerals, including solid fuels, and for metallurgical processes both in the ferrous and non-ferrous fields. Process applications have included roasting, calcining, combustion and charring of coals, as well as off-gas treatment. This paper provides a summary of the pyrite roasting technology currently used along with a simple cost comparison of pyrite roasting and sulphur burning processes.

This is a sampling of the papers presented at the conference, the proceedings can be bought from the SAIMM An extensive research programme to address the issue of rockburst control has been undertaken over a number of years. This paper discusses the development of preconditioning techniques to control face bursts, for safer mining in seismically hazardous areas. Preconditioning involves regularly setting off carefully tailored blasts in the fractured rock immediately ahead of a mining face, so as to encourage slip on pre-existing fractures, in order not to allow the accumulation of high strain energy density in the rock mass. Two different preconditioning techniques have been developed, namely face-perpendicular preconditioning and face-parallel preconditioning. Both have prevented face bursting in areas to which they have been applied, even though several large seismic events have occurred close to the faces in some areas. In addition, minimal overall damage was observed in the preconditioned panels following these events, compared to similarly exposed unpreconditioned panels. Preconditioning has also provided some protection to the face area from distant events, through the capacity of the preconditioned ground to absorb energy. An improvement in hangingwall stability and productivity has also been noted in preconditioned areas. In order to determine the optimum blast parameters for achieving the most effective preconditioning, an extensive optimization study was carried out for the face-perpendicular preconditioning technique. While optimum values for parameters such as hole length, diameter and spacing were determined, it was ultimately concluded that the differences in results obtained by varying the preconditioning parameters were less significant than the clear positive differences observed when comparing preconditioned areas with non-preconditioned areas.

The first crush pillars on the Bushveld platinum mines were introduced at Union Section in 1978. Before the introduction of crush pillars, serious problems were experienced when stoping advanced to a point 30 m to 40 m on both sides of the centre gully. At least three to four stopes were collapsing per month. The introduction of the pillars stopped the stope collapses in the mining area where they were introduced. The residual stresses of these pillars were never measured; however, the successful elimination of the ?back-break? problem suggests that the original pillars had a residual strength of at least 8 MPa. Apart from back analyses, very little work has been done to determine the residual strength of crush pillars and only very recently have any measurements been made. The lack of knowledge in this field has resulted in pillars being designed based on experience. Concerns about stope collapses, similar to the Coalbrook disaster, have led to larger pillars being cut in more recent times. If such pillars were cut in brittle quartzites they would always fail violently but the ductile nature of the Merensky Reef generally allows large pillars to fail without bursting. Occasionally, however, one would burst in a working area. Increased incidence of bursting has been reported on some mines at deeper levels but most of these bursts occur in the back areas. Nevertheless, the incidence of bursting increases the risk of falls of ground in already dangerous areas, and the larger pillars decrease the extraction ratio. This paper describes the evaluation of stress measurements conducted in two boreholes over a crush pillar with dimensions 2.5 m x4.0 m, and a height of 1.2 m. Boussinesq equations for vertical and shear stress were used to analyse the original measurements and provide a stress profile across the pillar as well as the residual strength of the pillar. The results showed an unexpectedly high peak stress of 280 MPa at the centre of the pillar and a residual strength of 48 MPa. The reason for the high residual strength is suspected to be the result of the stiff environment under which the pillar failed and the small height of the siding on the up-dip edge of the pillar. More measurements should be conducted on several mines to establish a range of residual strengths for narrow crush pillars.

Physical modelling is one of the research tools in the understanding of the failure mechanisms and the deformations likely to be experienced by the strata during mining operations. Success of the physical models to predict the strata behaviour depends on satisfaction of the scaling requirements in modelling material used. This paper gives results from a laboratory work carried out into the factors influencing the strength and elastic properties of a physical model material to satisfy the scaling requirements determined from application of dimensional analysis to the pertinent variables affecting the deformation and failure of the underground structures. It was found that the conditions for preparing the material over its composition had a great influence on the final properties. The effect of different water quantities, sand size and mixing time upon the properties of modelling material was studied and water requirement for different proportions of sand/plaster to prepare the material was optimized. Various sand/plaster ratios of compositions were cured at three different levels of oven temperatures. Curing at low temperature produced material within the average modulus ratios ranging from 290 to 432, which are common to most rock types according to Deere?s rock classification, whilst curing at high temperature produced material within the low modulus ratios ranging from 64 to 140 depending on its composition. A combination of low and high temperature curing resulted with an increase in modulus ratio compared to high temperature curing. Curing the material at low temperature compared to other curing temperatures provided a satisfactory range of strength ratio. It has been shown that the relative amount of filler to plaster in the mix controls the frictional properties of the material and results with an increase in strength and modulus ratio of the material provided that suggested preparation and curing conditions were applied. Model material developed by curing at low temperature simulated modulus ranging from 241 to 343 and strength ratios ranging from 11.6 to14.8 of a coal mine rocks, satisfactorily.

This paper develops the themes explained at the previous SAIMM Platinum conference by Whittle and Burks1. Optimization techniques can be used to significantly increase the value of mining businesses by enabling better long- term planning decisions. Open pit and underground mine design, mine scheduling, cut-off grade and blending, stockpiling, and the linking of these to flexible elements of the metallurgical recovery processes are all evaluated together. Transport or sale of intermediate products and the requirements of the product metal markets can also be considered. Experience shows that net present value (NPV) can potentially be increased by 5-35 per cent or more, usually even before the expenditure of significant amounts of project capital. The case studies presented include: ? An existing operation with multiple open pits and PGM concentrators linked to offsite downstream processing facilities, and with infrastructure constraints for which the scheduling of current operations and the potential for expansion were investigated ? An existing operation with an integrated portfolio of mines, concentrators, smelter and refinery, for which the various possible sources of ore for processing were prioritized to match the downstream process plant constraints and the product markets ? An underground operation in Zimbabwe for which the optimum mining width was calculated and expansion plans were evaluated ? An underground mine with many separate mining sections, for which a revised schedule was developed aiming to keep the shaft system and processing plant at capacity with the highest net value material available at any time throughout the life of mine. In the concluding section of the paper, a few brief notes are included suggesting how the strategic recommendations from enterprise optimization studies may be implemented by the Owner?s team.

Simultaneous reduction and foaming of chromium-rich slag have been studied in a laboratory furnace equipped with X-ray image analysis. Reduction of the metal oxides by graphite generated CO, which caused the melt to foam. The slag composition continuously changed due to reactions and dissolution of lining. Gas generation rate, foam height, and gas bubble size were studied and correlated to slag composition. Viscosity increased significantly during the experiments due to a change in slag composition. Bubble sizes varied little during the progress of reactions but differed considerably for different slags. Bubble sizes were largest for V2O5 containing slag, which is contrary to the general understanding that the presence of strong surface active agents reduces the bubble size. The foaming index did not follow expected trends for bubble size and viscosity, suggesting that foaming index is not a suitable parameter for discussion of foams under dynamic conditions. The bioleaching of arsenopyrite, the oxidation of arsenate and the precipitation of ferric arsenate are competing reactions, hence their rates depend on the relative concentrations of the respective species, and the activity of the bacterial culture. Bacterial arsenic resistance may be attributed to the Pst+Pit-mutation and an energy dependent efflux pump. Pst+Pit-mutations result in a reduced uptake of arsenate. This enables the bacteria to survive in solutions in which the arsenate concentration is significantly higher than the arsenite concentration. However, the excretion of arsenate requires energy. Therefore, in the absence of an energy source or during periods of reduced bacterial activity, the inhibitory effect of arsenate may manifest at concentrations to which the culture has been adapted. The chemical ferric leaching rate of pyrite and arsenopyrite decrease with a decrease in the solution redox and may be described using a modified Butler-Volmer equation. The bacterial ferrous-iron oxidation kinetics of L. ferrooxidans also depend on the redox potential, and can be described using a Michaelis-Mententype model modified to account for both temperature and pH. A model developed using the independently determined ferric leaching, and ferrous-iron oxidizing kinetics, has been shown to compare well with the experimental data for the continuous bioleaching of pyrite. The classical limit equilibrium methods are suspected to be ineffective in predicting the potential for highwall failure in many instances in coal mines around the world. Slope engineers have for many years recognized a block thrust failure mechanism for slope failures, but little work had been done before 2000 to explain the actual mechanisms which must be responsible for the failure. The main reason for this is that limit equilibrium methods implicitly assume rigid blocks, and the resulting force equations must be satisfied everywhere simultaneously for them to have any meaning. This paper will show that the material involved in the slope failure is not rigid; indeed it undergoes considerable permanent deformation during failure. This observation allows the authors to treat the block boundaries independently, because they need not maintain a constant spatial relationship with one another, as is assumed in other methods. To enable analysis of this type the authors assume that the weight of the blocks is evenly distributed. This is reasonable, because the slope material is not strong enough to be self-supporting without some sort of constraint, or strong enough to be able to apply point loads to the surrounding material. The purpose of this paper is to extend the practical application of the analytical method developed from mechanism studies to provide an objective assessment of the risk of slope failure, and therefore guidelines for more stable slope designs. This work is based on studies carried out on two failures in an open pit coal mine in South Africa, and provides a methodology to assess the potential for failure more objectively than is possible with currently accepted methods, while at the same time remaining sufficiently simple to allow a ?back of the cigarette box? assessment by geotechnical engineers on site.

Abstract: The aim of the research presented is to study the effect of complex loading schemes on the fracturing process during loading and/or unloading. A first set of experiments was done using a poly-axial cell. These experiments in combination with numerical simulations showed a difference in micro-fracturing (shear and tensile cracks), but not in macro-failure between various loading/ unloading schemes. The second set of experiments was based on the three-point bending test and several cycles with or without rotation between cycles were applied. If the specimen was rotated by 90° or 180° about its long axis between the first and second cycle, no Kaiser effect was observed. Résumé: Le but de la recherche présentée est d’étudier l’effet de schémas de charge complexe sur le processus de fracturation durant la phase de charge et de décharge. Une première série d’expériences était réalisée utilisant une cellule polyaxiale. Ces expériences combinées avec des simulations numériques ont montré une différence de micro-fracturation (fissures de cisaillements et de traction) pour les différents schémas de charge et décharge, mais en ce qui concerne la macro-fracturation ce n’est pas le cas. La deuxième série d’expériences était basée sur des essais de flexion trois points avec plusieurs cycles, avec ou sans rotation entre les cycles. Si l’échantillon est tourné de 90° ou 180° selon le grand axe entre le premier et le second cycle, l’effet Kaiser n’est pas observé. Zusammenfassung: Der Zweck der vorliegenden Forschung bestand darin, den Einfluß von komplizierten Beanspruchungsschemen auf den Bruchprozess im Laufe von Belastung und/oder Entlastung von Gesteinen zu untersuchen. Der erste hier beschriebene Satz von Experimenten wurde mit einer dreiaxialen Belastungsmaschine angestellt. Diese Experimenten zusammen mit dazugehörigen numerischen Simulationen zeigten Unterschiede zwischen Be- und Entlastungsbeanspruchungen in Bezug auf mikrobruchmechanische Mechanismen (d.h. Scher- oder Zugrisse) an, aber nicht in Bezug auf den Makrobruchprozess. Der zweite Satz von Experimenten umfasste Gesteinsbeanspruchung in mehreren Zyklen von Drei-Punkt-Biegung, indem die Gesteinsproben zwischen den Zyklen um einen angegebenen Winkel (0°, 90° oder 180°) gedreht wurden. Falls die Probe um 90° oder 180° gedreht wurde, wurde kein Kaiser-Effekt im zweiten Zyklus beobachtet.

"Prior to operating a non-recovery coke pilot plant, it was critical to ascertain coal cake stability during the loading of a 1 m3 coal cake into the oven. Various compaction parameters were verified and established on a small laboratory-scale compaction machine to obtain a coal cake of acceptable stability. These parameters include cake density, cake surface moisture, transverse strength (force applied perpendicular to the original compacted coal cake layers), and applied force to the coal cake. This work determined the behavioural characteristics of the coal while being compacted either with a full-sized or a 1/3-sized compaction plate in a 9 kg capacity mould. Two different coals were evaluated, namely Waterberg semi-soft coking coal (sscc) and Oaky North hard coking coal.The target wet cake density of 1 100 kg/m3 (79% of 1 400 kg/m3 relative density) was achieved for Waterberg sscc, with a particle size d50 varying between 0.6 mm and 1 mm, utilizing the 1/3-sized compaction plate in the laboratory-scale set-up, with 11.6% surface moisture and 92.2 t/m2 commercial equivalent applied force. For Oaky North hard coking coal, a wet cake density of 1 189 kg/m3 (85% of 1 400 kg/m3 relative density) was achieved at a surface moisture content of 12.3% and at a lower applied force than that for Waterberg sscc, i.e. 78.5 t/m2.Coal cakes of acceptable strength, and therefore sufficient stability for further processing, were obtained for all materials evaluated during this study.Further studies should be conducted to determine the effect of zeta potential during the compaction of coals.IntroductionExxaro Resources has successfully installed and commissioned a world-class stamp-charging horizontal 1 t electrically-heated pilot-scale coke oven at its Metallurgy Services facility. Prior to operating the coke non-recovery pilot plant, it is essential to ascertain coal cake stability during the loading of a 1 m3 coal cake into the oven. The design of Exxaro’s pilot plant is such that the coal cake is pushed inside the oven by means of a pusher plate, rather than through a ‘spoon’ feed mechanism, such as is found in industrial horizontal coke ovens. The pusher plate loading mechanism dictates that the coal cake should possess high stability and inherent strength during loading into the oven, owing to frictional forces exerted by the oven floor. In order to obtain a coal cake of acceptable stability, various compaction parameters needed to be verified and established on a small laboratory-scale compaction machine."
