The PPRust North project is an expansion of existing operations on the ?Platreef? orebody in the Limpopo Province of South Africa. Anglo Platinum has been mining and processing the Platreef since 1993 at the adjacent Sandsloot and Zwartfontein South open pits at a current rate of approximately 4.5 million tons per annum. This paper describes the origin of the proposed process flow sheet. A comprehensive test work programme has been conducted evaluating the best process flow sheet for the very hard and variable ore in the proposed mining area. The selection of the comminution circuit is discussed where conventional crushing and SABC options were analysed based on both extensive test work and analyses of current operational data at the existing concentrator. The application of the high pressure grinding roll technology has significant advantages?it replaces the 3rd and 4th stage crushing stages in a conventional circuit. This programme has been conducted over several years and has involved work done at site at pilot scale, internally at the company?s research facilities and externally at various sites. The on-site pilot work was completed over a 7-month period at the existing concentrator facility using a ThyssenKrupp-Polysius, ?Polycom?, 950 mm by 350 mm, high pressure grinding rolls (HPGR) machine. In excess of 185 000 tons of ore was processed through the unit during the trial period. This paper describes the test work programme and particularly the proposed application of high pressure grinding technology and its potential for further application in the platinum industry.

The development of feedforward semi-empirical control models for furnaces and the evaluation of mass balances are based on plant data. The models can only be as good as the data and it is therefore required to know the inherent uncertainty associated with the plant data. This uncertainty stems mainly from the fact that the slag, alloy or dust, have a distributed nature that depends on the degree of mixedness. It is commonly accepted that melts from open bath furnaces are well-mixed, and submerged arc furnaces less so. The impact of this assumption is significant, as a reasonably homogeneous melt could be represented by one sample only. As so much of metallurgical control depends on the assay information of the alloy and slag melts from furnaces, it was decided to characterise the possible variation in melt chemistry and temperature. Sampling campaigns and continuous temperature measurement of the melts were performed for different alloy and slag taps at a major ferrochrome producer. Both a submerged arc furnace and open arc furnace are evaluated in this way, by way of comparison. The slags of both open arc and submerged arc furnaces were found to be of similar degrees of homogeneity, with much spatial variance in the reducible iron and chromium oxides. However, it was found that the alloy melts deriving from open arc furnaces were significantly less homogeneous than the alloy derived from submerged arc furnace alloy production. The compositional variance could be related to the furnace operating conditions and it affects both metallurgical accounting and process control. In all cases it was found that the variance in melt solute components are larger than can be ascribed to analysis instrument error. It will be shown how this predetermined variance in melt composition could be included in process modelling and control.

Various reagents are added to flotation pulps to manipulate the chemical environment in order to create favourable conditions for the separation of the desired mineral from the unwanted gangue. Interactions occur between these reagents and between the other chemical parameters existing in the flotation pulp which complicate the elucidation of the behaviour of the respective reagents. This paper discusses the roles of the main classes of reagents added viz. collectors, frothers, depressants and activators, as well as the interactions between frothers and collectors. A case study reporting synergistic interactions between thiol collectors in the flotation of pyrite at pH = 4 is included. The use of Potassium n-butyl xanthate (PNBX) and a dithiocarbamate type collector (DTC) were tested both as pure collectors and as components in a collector mixture. In the batch flotation tests sulphur recovery and grade, water recovery, rate of recovery and image analysis of the surface froth were used to evaluate the effect of the mixture on the overall flotation performance. Bubble loading tests showed that the use of the mixture improved the efficiency of the particle collection process by bubbles. Thermochemical measurements of the adsorption of the collectors onto the mineral, indicated the formation of different surface products by the two collectors.

There are few data on the composition of discard coal in South Africa, and no overall view of the discards for the entire industry. As a result of work on coal qualities in South Africa, a database was established which enabled a good estimate to be made of the composition of the discard from every mine. The data are presented in the form of histograms of ash, volatile matter and fixed carbon content of the 43 million tons of material which were discarded in 1990. The results are discussed in terms of the closeness of the composition of much of the discard material to presently used power station coal. It is concluded that it is mainly developments in equipment, particularly fluidized bed boilers, which inhibit the wider use of discard coal. However, other factors must be noted, including the relatively high sulphur content of the discards, and the fact that even with the most careful storage the material ages and may become unusable after about 15 years.

The feasibility of using hydrogen to obtain clean steels is investigated. High hydrogen contents are generally considered as detrimental due to the risk of flakes, bubbles and breakouts during casting. Hydrogen can nonetheless be removed by degassing of the steel. The results of industrial campaigns, where total oxygen content and hydrogen content were monitored, are presented. High resolution microscopy of inclusions and laboratory experiments on the rate of inclusion removal by CaO-Al2O3 slags at different partial hydrogen have been carried out. So far, evidence that hydrogen may influence inclusions or the steel cleanliness is not clear. Keywords: hydrogen, cleanliness, inclusions.

The use of copper cooling elements to enhance refractory lining life in pyrometallurgical vessels is common in modern furnace design. Copper elements typically incorporate a base panel with cast in cooling passages and an integral extended surface (formed of pins, fins or similar) onto which suitable refractory material is cast. The metallic, conducting parts are located towards the cold face of the lining, with the refractory material interposing between the coolers and the process. The coolers are designed to arrest wear of the refractory material by freezing a layer of slag or partially reacted material onto the hot face, thereby rendering the lining inert to further attack [1]. These coolers have achieved success in new furnaces and relining of existing vessels. The freeze layer is prone to mechanical damage during operational and process instability. The coolers must be capable of extracting the additional heat flux under upset conditions to facilitate rapid self-repair of the freeze layer and prevent further refractory wear in the intermittently exposed areas. However, operational experience has shown that the high heat flux capabilities of the copper coolers have some disadvantages, especially in processes producing vapours which form corrosive compounds when condensing onto the cold surfaces of the coolers. When corrosive conditions develop, the entire composite will fail due to loss of structural integrity, and as a result of leaks from the cooling water passages. This paper describes recent developments in the approach to the design and manufacture of copper cooler panels customized to achieve specified heat fluxes and temperature profiles, thereby reducing the formation of corrosion mechanisms in applications with corrosive gaseous environments and enhancing refractory lining life. Condensation formation prevention is achieved by adjusting the geometry of the cooler and selection of suitable materials of construction.

The corrosion properties of iron-based composite materials containing graphite and silicon carbide (SiC) reinforcement were investigated. The effects of silicon carbide reinforcement were investigated by adding 0.5% graphite and 1%, 2%, and 4% SiC. A powder metallurgy method was used to produce the composite samples. Iron, graphite, and silicon carbide powders were blended for one hour with a threeaxis mixer and then unidirectionally pressed under a pressure of 750 MPa. After pressing, the composite materials were sintered at 1100°C for one hour. The corrosion properties and microstructure, density, and hardness properties of the composite materials that can affect the corrosion properties were also investigated. It was determined that the pore ratio and hardness of the composite material increased, and corrosion resistance decreased, with increasing silicon carbide content.

This paper reviews the major deposits of lower-grade chromite in the world, and a wide variety of methods used for the recovery of chromium from them. Gangue materials in more coarsely sized ores can be separated by gravity means, whereas flotation techniques are required for finer-grained materials. However, unless there is considerable Iron In the ores, physical means cannot increase the Cr/Fe ratios. Chemical techniques such as hydrometallurgical methods, chlorination, roasting and leaching, and smelting are required for this purpose. A greater understanding of the physical properties of chromites and the chemical reactions that take place in the recovery operations is required before. the recoveries from lower-grade chromites can be maximized. More efficient recovery operations can be realized If It can be shown definitively that the reduction of chromites occurs via either a gas-solld or solid-solid mechanism, for example. The effects of specific impurities on the chromite reduction reactions need to be better understood, as do reagent and pH control in the flotation of chromite.

In cement-based products, such as concrete and mortars, a balance between the particle sizes of the components must be kept in order to obtain the required material properties, such as workability and strength. Sometimes the aggregates lack the necessary amount of fines, hence fine particles, i.e., filler materials, have to be added. Large quantities of filler material are needed in the production of modern concrete types; one principle of self-compacting concrete (SCC) is, for instance, the use of large amounts of fillers to reduce the friction between the coarser aggregates. Use of by-products such as slag, dust or sludge from the metallurgical industries as filler materials in concrete may help to conserve natural resources and at the same time be an economically positive option. However, to be able to successfully use the available materials they must be suitable for the planned purpose, i.e., they must be compatible with cement. In this paper three different experimental studies of steel-slags will be discussed. The aim of the studies has been to investigate if it is possible to improve the steel-slags properties, by selective screening, fine wet grinding or remelting, so that the steel-slags can be used as mineral-addition/filler material in concrete. Arguments are presented in favour of a new interpretation of the chemistry pertaining to the dissolution of gold, when this takes place in typical gold plant leach circuits where calcium is present in solution. It is suggested that under these conditions the standard chemistry, as it applies in the absence of calcium, is no longer valid. Thus the concept of very soluble sodium and aurocyanide ionic species in solution is replaced by the presence of weakly soluble calcium aurocyanide, which is a covalent coordination complex that is non-ionic. Supporting evidence for this is provided and the implications that the presence of calcium in gold plant circuits may have for operational efficiency are discussed. In particular, because of the formation of this weakly soluble calcium complex, the addition of lime to the leach circuit is questioned. Arguments for the use of a sodium hydroxide/sodium carbonate/sodium bicarbonate buffer solution as a means of controlling pH and of increasing ionic strength in a so-called ?soft? leach are presented. Such a lime-free system, besides benefiting the leaching of gold, would have many downstream benefits in existing CIP circuits. Furthermore, the direct electrowinning of gold from the leach now becomes potentially feasible.

Uranium is a naturally occurring radioactive material in the earth?s crust. Geological processes have resulted in concentration of uranium into ore mined for its gold content in South Africa. This uranium is present in the form of discrete particles of uranium minerals, generally oxides, which are normally insoluble. Chemical and physical processes during gold mining and extraction, particularly when carried out in conjunction with uranium extraction and sulphuric acid manufacture, act on the uranium minerals and the radioactive decay products of uranium. This may result insignificant accumulations of radioactive materials in certain parts of the process. There are a number of naturally occurring radioactive materials in the earth?s crust, such as Uranium-235, Thorium-232, andPotassium-40. This paper focuses on Uranium-238, together with its decay products, and how they affect the gold mines. Water plays a significant role in the redistribution of radionuclides, both as a physical transport medium, and as a solvent in which chemical reactions take place.

The occurrence of fracturing due to high stress levels is a major factor in hangingwall stability in deep level gold mine stopes. However, rock falls cannot be the result of these fractures alone. Rock falls can result only from the occurrence of unstable rock blocks defined by the interaction of the stress induced fractures and naturally occurring geological planes of weakness. These planes include bedding planes and joint set planes. However, there is a general lack of information on the characteristics of these planes (orientations, spacings and lengths)?it does not appear that any such systematic and quantified information, if collected, has been published. To remedy this situation to some extent, joint mapping exercises have been carried out in several geological environments in two gold mines. The data collected on joint geometry included orientation, spacing and length, and this information is included in the paper. In addition, the paper describes the use of the data collected to evaluate the potential for rock falls and the probability of failure of stope support

Data are presented on the effect of iron oxide on the electrical conductivity of CaO-SiO2-FeO-Fe2O3melts, and on limiting current and impedance in direct current or alternating current charge transfer at iron electrodes. The strong influence of iron oxide content can be utilized for in situ determination of total iron oxide content and Fe3+/Fe2+ratio. The possible probe designs are presented and the principles and procedures of the measurements are explained. The author would like to refer to his contribution to the paper `Design of pillar systems in South Africa' by Ozbay et al. 1. The authors agreed `wholeheartedly that further research, together with carefully planned field trials, in pursuit of this potentially highly rewarding concept' of the small span small pillar method is warranted. On 30 September 2010 the author went underground at the Kroondal Chrome Mine to observe how the concept of smaller spans was being applied. He was pleasantly surprised to find that the typical coal mine bord and pillar sytem was being used very successfully. Although the deepest mining was taking place at a depth of only 450 metres, Kroondal would be an ideal mine to do further research together with carefully planned field trials. At Crown Mines Gold Mine, where the author worked, he was informed that the first recorded rockburst took place at a depth of 635 metres below surface. The depth of the platinum and chrome mines is increasing, with the risk of an excalation in injuries and fatalities due to 'backbreaks' and siesmic activity. The rock engineer at Kroondal was not aware of backbreaks occuring on the mine. It is important that the rock engineers of the base mineral and gold mines get together and give more serious attention to the host rock environment in which the pillars are situated.

With the advent of the First World Conference on Sampling and Blending (WCSB1) in Denmark in 2003 and the subsequent biannual meetings, together with other sampling conferences held on a regular basis, the central tenets of sound sampling practice and theory are spreading throughout the minerals industry. End-users and project houses, or groups who execute the projects, are all now better-informed about the principles of ?correct? sampling and preparation. To support this, many large mining companies now have their own in-house champion who will advise and ensure that the supply of sampling equipment is correct in terms of design and application, which further contributes to improved metallurgical accounting. The presence of a sampling champion also ensures that consistent and acceptable standards in regard to sampling practice are maintained throughout the group. This has, in turn, placed a greater degree of responsibility on the shoulders of sampling equipment suppliers, in terms of their equipment designs and product offerings, as well as applications knowledge for effective installation of equipment on client plants. This paper attempts to highlight the significant challenges that sampling equipment manufacturers often face with regard to complying with the newly understood requirements of best practice and sampling equipment design. Manufacturers invariably face issues with end-users or project houses, including project cost control, restricted headroom for samplers in plant layouts, and a lack of knowledge in certain quarters. These all have a potentially negative effect on the final outcome of a proposed sampling solution or implemented project. In reality, what is intended by all parties and what is ultimately installed are at times very different, with undesirable consequences for all concerned. Against this challenging background, there are, however, a number of instances where intent and implementation are complementary, with very satisfactory results. The Kriel Colliery is an Anglo Coal mine which is contracted with Eskom to produce No. 4 seam for Kriel power station. The mine previously found it uneconomical to mine No. 5 seam due to the low qualities and tonnages of the seam, both at the opencast and underground sections. An area has been encountered for the first time at Kriel Colliery opencast pit 5, where the tonnage and qualities of No. 5 seam warrant further investigation. The primary reason for the investi¬gation of No. 5 seam by Kriel Colliery is because of the advantage of the high selling price (R450/t) that the market is currently prepared to pay for the No. 5 seam. The aim of this project is to mine No. 5 seam economically without interrupting No. 4 seam mining operations. The problem is that the equipments that are currently being used at the mine belong to Eskom and are dedicated to mining No. 4 seam only, not No. 5 seam. Through geology investigation, it is found that the whole No. 5 seam (No. 5 seam upper and lower) has an average thickness of 1.8 m. It also contains a parting of carbonaceous shale which divides the seam into two parts. No. 5 seam upper contains less tonnage compared to No. 5 seam lower. The calorific value and ash content of No. 5 seam lower is far better than No. 5 seam upper, but would still require washing the coal. This makes No. 5 seam lower the preferred seam to mine because it meets the requirements of the customer which is Highveld Steel. It is a coincidence that the area containing No. 5 seam under investigation encounters high overburden problems. The problem of drilling to No. 4 seam was going to be encountered because the thickness of the overburden ranges from 35 to 39 m. The Gardner Denver at the mine can drill blastholes only to a depth of 34.5 m, meaning the full overburden will not be drilled at once. This means the mining of No. 5 seam will do favours for Eskom because the overburden thickness will be minimized. This then led to an agreement between Anglo Coal and Eskom to mine No. 5 seam because both companies benefit from the project. In order to identify a suitable mining method for No. 5 seam lower, literature studies took place. It is found that San Juan mine from the USA has similar geological features to Kriel Colliery's No. 5 seam. Through comparisons, it is found that truck and shovel mining would suit the geology of Kriel Colliery's No. 5 seam since San Juan mine is using it. The sequence of mining No. 5 seam lower allows for a clearance of two cuts between the truck and shovel operation and the dragline. The mining sequence of No. 5 and 4 seam will be in the order of top soil removal; soft overburden pre-stripping; pre-strip drilling; pre-strip hard overburden; No. 5 seam lower coaling; interburden drilling and blasting; interburden stripping and No. 4 seam coaling. Financial evaluation of the project shows that a contractor will charge Kriel Colliery (Anglo Coal) approximately R 102.2 million to mine No. 5 seam successfully. The sales of No. 5 seam lower will provide a profit of R99.4 million at a yield of 70% from the washing plant. The project is beneficial to both Eskom and Anglo Coal because Eskom will have eliminated the problem of pre-stripping and Anglo Coal will generate additional profit. Through investigation and analyses of the project, it is proven to be viable and should take place. This is after looking at the advantages that the project has for Anglo Coal and Eskom. Samples of four different satellite materials were prepared by either hot isostatic pressing (HIP) of the powder or tungsten inert-gas welding of rod onto a 316 L stainless-steel substrate. The samples were subjected to a series of comparative erosion corrosion tests, and generally the Hipped samples experienced between 13 and 24 per cent less loss in mass than the equivalent welded alloys. Resistance to erosion corrosion increased with increasing carbon, chromium, and tungsten contents. Metallographic studies indicated the differences in carbide content between the different satellite materials, and the differences in morphology between the Hipped and welded samples. ABSTRACT: A three-dimensional elastic constitutive model for rock salt is proposed. This stress strain law takes into account the three phases of creep (transient, steady state and accelerated creep), dilatancy, as well as the failure and post failure behaviour. The model was implemented into a finite element program and validated on the results of laboratory tests and in situ measurements. A good qualitative and quantitative agreement with the test and measurement results is achieved. A stability analysis for an underground repository in rock salt is presented. ZUSAMMENFASSUNG: Es wird ein dreidimensionales elastisch-viskoplastisches Stoffgesetz für Steinsalz vorgestellt. Mit diesem Stoffgesetz können die drei Kriechphasen (primäres, sekundäres und tertiäres Kriechen), Dilatanz sowie das Bruch- und Nachbruchverhalten erfaßt werden. Dieses Modell wurde in ein Rechenprogramm, das auf der Methode der finiten Elemente basiert, implementiert und an Ergebnissen von Laborversuchen und in-situ-Messungen validiert. Die Versuchs- und Meßergebnisse lassen sich mit diesem Stoffgesetz qualitativ und quantitativ gut nachvollziehen. Als Anwendungsbeispiel wird der Standsicherheitsnachweis für eine Untertagedeponie im Steinsalz erläutert. RÉSUMÉ: Cet article présente un modéle constitutive élastique/viscoplastique à trois dimensions pour sel gemme. Ce modéle comprend les trois stade de fluage (fluage primaire, secondaire et tertiaire), la dilatation, le comportement de défaillance et d'après défaillance. Il est implanté dans un programme de calcul aux éléments finis. À l'aide des essais laboratoire et des mésures in situ, le modéle a été validé. Les résultats des essais et des mesures concordent qualitatifs et quantitatifs aux résultats des calculations.

"In 2017, Petra Diamonds completed the construction and commissioning of a modern, fit-for-purpose diamond processing plant at Cullinan Diamond Mine (CDM). The design of CDM’s milling circuit is unconventional in that it comprises an autogenous (AG) mill with a grate discharge with large ports, low-revolution jaw crushers, and high-pressure grinding roll crushers with large operating gaps. In this paper we review the design to provide guidance on what is expected from the milling circuit and to demonstrate how the design aims to address challenges experienced in the old plant, which was based on staged crushing technology. We assessed the performance of the CDM AG milling circuit from commissioning and early production stages to examine its impact along multiple dimensions. In the assessment we sought to understand the lessons from our milling circuit regarding diamond liberation, energy consumption, and the future of diamond processing as a whole. IntroductionCullinan Diamond Mine (CDM), previously known as Premier Mine, is an underground diamond mine owned by Petra Diamonds. Petra Diamonds is a leading independent diamond mining group and a growing supplier of rough diamonds to the international market. Petra Diamonds is listed on the Main Market of the London Stock Exchange under the ticker ‘PDL’. Petra’s total resource of 305 million carats ranks third by size after De Beers and ALROSA (Petra Diamonds, 2018).CDM was established in 1902. The mine rose to prominence in 1905, when the 3106 carat Cullinan Diamond — the largest rough diamond of gem quality ever found — was discovered there. The mine has produced over 750 stones that are larger than 100 carats and more than a quarter of all the world's diamonds that are larger than 400 carats. Cullinan is renowned as a source of large, high-quality gem diamonds, including Type II stones, as well as being the world’s most important source of very rare blue diamonds (Petra Diamonds, 2018)."
