The paper deals with the technologies required for opening up anew idealized ultra-deep level mine. First the overall philosophy of accessing ore at ultra depths is discussed. Then the individual technologies which will be required are explored. Finally a detailed overview on one of the key technologies, namely tunnel support, is given. Because this project is still in its infancy, few definitive answers are provided; instead each of the envisaged technologies are briefly discussed, with emphasis on those which require the element of speed for rapidly accessing the ore body.

In the present study, the production of low carbon ferrochromium (LC-FeCr) from chromite concentrates containing 55.09% Cr2O3 and 13.06% Fe via metallothermic process was investigated. For this aim, in the experiments, the aluminothermic reduction method was applied in an open crucible. 10% CrO3 + 10% NaClO3, 15% CrO3 + 5% NaClO3 and 20% CrO3 by weight of concentrate were added to the charge, respectively and the charge was reduced with aluminium. The experiments were done with the additions of 90, 100, 110, 120 and 130% of stoichiometric requirement of aluminium. The highest Cr content in alloys was found as 71.7% at 120% of stoichiometric Al whereas the highest Cr recovery in alloys was found as 71.8% at 130% of stoichiometric Al when the both charge contained 15% CrO3 + 5% NaClO3 by weight of chromite concentrate.

The gold mine sector is presently facing low gold prices as well as technological challenges. Its competitiveness and survival will depend on new mining methods and equipment to improve ore extraction. In 1999, Natural Resources Canada has invested new funds over a period of three years at CANMET’s Experimental Mine to establish the Narrow-Vein Mining Project. A team of engineers and researchers specialized in mining, mechanics and electronics engineering are working to meet the critical need of ore-extraction technology. CANMET’s programme in mechanization and automation for narrow-vein mining had, prior to 1999, realised several important achievements, many in co-operation with a consortium of mining companies(Soredem). The investment of new funds in this area will contribute to develop technologies to improve the productivity, as well as health and safety conditions of the narrow-vein mining industry. Several important impacts of this project will be monitored. In particular, a database of methods and equipment used in narrow-vein mining is being developed. A key thrust is to identify operators’ needs with respect to the development and automation of mining methods and equipment. Based on those needs, research and development projects will be created. The paper will present the objectives of the narrow-vein mining project and some of the results, including the web site developed to present the results of the project.

Conventional PGM matte smelting requires the presence of a certain quantity of base metal sulphides in order to collect the platinum group metals in a molten sulphidic matte phase in the furnace. Furthermore, the quantity of chromium oxide in the feed materials is controlled in order to avoid the build-up of high-melting chromite spinels in the furnace. Mintek has developed a process for smelting difficult PGM-containing feed materials that contain low amounts of sulphur and/or high amounts of chromium oxide. A DC arc furnace is used to provide the appropriate conditions to generate an iron alloy that collects PGMs very effectively, leaving extremely low residual quantities of PGMs in the slag. Various feed materials have been treated successfully in furnace campaigns running at power levels up to 1.5 MW. The longest of these campaigns was run continuously for more than four months, treating more than two thousand tons of materials such as low-grade concentrates, revert tailings, and converter slag. The campaigns demonstrated the robustness and versatility of the process, and proved that it is possible to sustainably produce a PGM-containing alloy and discardable slags containing an average of less than 1.4 g/t of PGMs over the entire campaign. "Both Polish and European hard coal mining nowadays faces the need of deepening shafts (significantly in some cases) or extending mining hoists, due to the exploitation of deeper coal deposits.In order to protect the crew working within a shaft, rope safety platforms (artificial shaft bottoms) are employed. Old solutions, based on rigid steel constructions with the external damping layers made of e.g. slag and up to several tens of metres long, are intended to absorb the energy of approximately 5 t mass falling a distance of 700 m. However, current requirements often assume a drop of 20 t to a depth of 1000 m or even more.More modern safety platform structures, made of one or more support rings with steel ropes stretched on them (rope platforms), are more compact (up to 3 m high) and lighter than traditional solutions. Multi-ring rope platforms with additional damping layers filling the empty spaces between the ropes are able to absorb sufficient energy to meet the current requirements.Single- and double-ring platforms have been employed in Poland to absorb the energy of approximately 5 t dropping to a depth of 900 m. They have been developed (and some have already been implemented) by SADEX Ltd. and are protected by various patents and patent applications.This paper presents a design for a triple-ring platform structure with six rope nets. FEM analysis was used to model the performance of the platform. According to the simulation, a 20 t mass falling from 1000 m (>100 m/s) will destroy all the nets, breaking most of the ropes and deforming the support steel boards placed on the nets, but will ultimately be stopped by the platform, as its kinetic energy falls to zero."

Many factors affect the overall performance of a gravity circuit beyond that of the primary gravity recovery device. It is critical to examine the gravity circuit in its entirety in order to determine the dominant operating variables that affect overall performance. Knelson has developed a mathematical model which has been used to assist in the design of gravity circuits, and in particular, in making accurate predictions of plant scale gravity recovery. More recently, inclusion of recovery by particle size class and additional data from various mine sites and research studies has made the model more robust. The model is now able to predict GRG (gravity-recoverable-gold) recoveries using various devices such as centrifugal concentrators, shaking tables, jigs and flash-flotation within the grinding circuit. The benefits derived by these recent advancements in modeling capability are two-fold; the first is as a tool to assist in circuit design and correct equipment selection and the second is as an analytical tool to help to evaluate and enhance the performance of existing gravity circuits.

"Geometallurgy aims to improve mining project value by predicting the impact that ore and waste characteristics will have on mining and metallurgical processes. This requires integration of rich spatial models of orebody characteristics with validated process response models. These models have, until recently, been constrained by the spatial coverage and representativity of relevant data and the ability to validate predictions made.The revolution in the diversity and volume of data and computational power that is now becoming available for integrated geoscientific modelling of orebodies, and stochastic simulation of mining and mineral processes is accelerating. By embracing emergent integrated data analysis and simulation techniques, geoscientists and engineers can lead a transformation in the way the mining value chain, from orebody to recovery, can be conceived, evaluated, and operated by using the geometallurgical paradigm.This paper describes a methodology that is applied to an existing diamond operation. Analysis of spatial and process data is used to build an integrated geometallurgical value chain model (IGVCM). This IGVCM is used to generate geometallurgical options and evaluate their potential outcomes. The model facilitates the use of flexible, highly configurable, and potentially automated intelligent approaches to evaluate mining and mineral process configuration, and results in more robust design outcomes. The approach described here, and its successful implementation has potential to deliver step-changes in value. IntroductionGeometallurgy aims to identify treatability risks – and opportunities – that arise from the interaction of orebody characteristics with mining and treatment. Improved understanding of the rock/process relationships allows project planners and production teams to predict performance, identify potential shortfalls, and thus enable the proactive creation and evaluation of strategies to mitigate these risks. These advanced insights also create opportunities for continually improving operational performance through dynamically adapting and improving the process response to the changing properties of the ore (Figure 1)."

Technosol production from mine waste, following amendment with additional organic residues, to provide healthy and functional topsoil is an advantageous alternative to the long-term dump disposal of mine waste. Minimising the legacy of mine waste and supplying soil for mine site rehabilitation contributes towards more sustainable mining practices. Following the creation of the physicochemical structure of the soil from appropriate mixtures of coal waste with low sulfur content, physical ameliorants and nutrient sources, the inoculation of Technosols with active microbial suspensions may accelerate the decomposition of organic matter present and ensure nutrient availability for plant growth through active nutrient cycling, particularly of nitrogen, sulfur and phosphorous. In this paper, South African ultrafine coal waste was used as the main mineral matrix, and malt residue was used as source of organic matter and nutrients. In order to evaluate the effects of Technosol inoculation, five microbial treatments were used, including the addition of: commercial grade efficient microorganisms (EM Prosoil), anaerobic digested sludge supernatant from treating brewery waste, and ‘tea’ extracts prepared from compost, vermicompost and soil native to the mining area. Growth experiments were carried out using Eragrostis teff, commonly known as teff, a grass typically used for the rehabilitation of mined areas in South Africa. Preliminary results showed that Technosols inoculated with microorganisms performed better in terms of nutrient availability and plant growth. Varied performance was observed as a function of the microbial inoculation applied. This suggests that the inoculation of Technosols with appropriate microorganisms may be recommended to accelerate nutrient availability assisting plant growth during the initial establishing of the Technosols. Technosols continue to show promise as an alternative to both mine waste disposal and the burrowing of topsoils for mine rehabilitation. It has previously been observed that industrial high-titania slags display a compositional invariance, remaining close to stoichio-metric M3O5. The present study focuses on this invariance and the phenomena which may cause it. The invariance was studied using thermochemical calculations and a mechanism is proposed for the observed behaviour. The mechanism suggests that a combination of thermochemical equilibrium and transient slag solidification and melting results in the observed compositional invariance. The proposed mechanism provides new insights and prompts questions about other mechanisms in the smelting process.

Bougainville Copper Limited (BCL) operates a 50 Mtpy copper/gold/silver mine and concentrator on Bougainville Island, Papua New Guinea. BCL has installed an in-house developed data logging and supervisory process control system using a DEC PDP 11/73 mini-computer in the mill and has recently installed a similar system in the crushing plant. Together with the central DEC VAX 11/780 computer, they form part of a high speed, fibre optic, local area network in the concentrator. The in-house developed software, known as BIAS (Bougainville Copper Information and Automation System), was developed as a low cost option to interface to a number of different existing plant input/output systems while providing the capability to make maximum use of computer networking facilities. The package includes the more usual control system colour displays and data logging features, but also makes provision for two novel features: (a) Any user connected to the computer network can access the system displays. This allows metallurgists and management to monitor (but not control) plant operation from their offices. (b) Specialized application programs for performing advisory and supervisory control, dynamic simulation, and data analysis are easily incorporated into the system. The mill process system currently runs rougher/scavenger flotation stabilizing control and general data logging. The crushing plant system currently performs data logging only; however it will soon be augmented with the facility to run dynamic crushing plant simulations. Future developments will concentrate on making greater use of the detailed information available from the mine's fully automatic truck dispatch system which runs on a VAX 11/780 computer. Milling process control will be expanded to examine possible economic control of the operation of regrind and cleaner flotation circuits. An advisory water management system to optimize water supply within powerhouse generating capacity constraint will also be investigated.

Variography was introduced by Dr. Pierre Gy to monitor a process, in the sixties. Later on, Francis Pitard extended this concept, building a complete system of variographic controls for different applications. Nevertheless, the existence of information about its use as a way to effectively control plants has been limited. There are infinite areas where variography and chronostatistics can be used. In this paper, two different cases related to gold and silver recovery, through well known but complex metallurgical routes are studied. The use of effective management of process variability software (EMPV) has shown to be a suitable solution to clarify problems at the plant and, consequently, a solution to the encountered problems has been proposed. Chronostatistics is like opening a new world to the metallurgist, making the process variability speak in a more comprehensive and in depth way. Once the ore has been extracted from the mine, sampling is necessary at each sequence of the metallurgical process involved. As a first example, leaching of the ore with cyanide in agitated tanks is another case of a complex metallurgy. The aim of the process is to know about residual values in the tailings in order to optimize process. As a second example, leaching of gold and silver in ore heaps, has to be optimized in terms of time, reagents consumption and, of course, in predicting a reasonable recovery. This last issue appears to be crucial. After cyanide leaching at the heaps, a carbon in columns process is involved, where there are a series of carbon loaded columns that are submitted to a dynamic process of load and unload, to finally deliver an enriched solution to the precious metal electrowinning plant. In both cases, variography has been a good approach to show metallurgists ways to improve the operation.

"Mapping of hydrothermally altered areas, which are usually associated with mineralization, is essential in mineral exploration. In this research, open source reflectance spectroscopy data from the multispectral moderate-resolution Landsat 8 satellite was used to map altered rocks in the Gauteng and Mpumalanga provinces of South Africa. The unique spectral reflectance and absorption characteristics of remotely sensed Landsat data in the visible, near-infrared (NIR), shortwave-infrared (SWIR) and thermal infrared (TIR) regions of the electromagnetic spectrum were used in different digital image processing techniques. The band ratios (red/blue, SWIR 2/NIR, SWIR 1/NIR), spectral band combinations (Kaufmann ratio, Sabins ratio) and principal component analysis (Crosta technique) were applied to efficiently and successfully map hydrothermal alteration minerals. The results showed that the combination of spectral bands and the principal component analysis method is effective in delineating mineral alteration through remotely sensed satellite data. The validation of results by using the published mineral maps of the Council for Geoscience South Africa showed a good relationship with the identified zones of mineralization. The methodology developed in this study is cost-effective and time-saving, and can be applied to inaccessible and/or new areas with limited ground-based knowledge to obtain reliable and up-to-date mineral information.IntroductionMany developing nations depend on exploration and exploitation of mineral resources to sustain their economic growth. Usually, the traditional mineral exploration techniques require enormous finances, prolonged time, and tremendous manpower, particularly in areas that are not easily reachable (Maduaka, 2014). Furthermore, mineral exploration required state-of-the-art techniques and expertise along with geological, geochemical, and geophysical datasets, which may not be easily available or may be lacking where access is problematic (Kaiser et al., 2002; Bemis et al., 2014). Modern remote sensing technology has proved to be one of the highly efficient and robust techniques used for mineral exploration. The use of remote sensing satellite images for geological mapping and mineral exploration usually involves studying the physicochemical properties of rocks and weathering soils, such as mineralogy, landforms, geochemical signatures, and the spatiall distribution of lineaments (Bhattacharya et al., 2012)."

Obviously all mining operations require much analytical work to be carried out. This starts with exploration, becomes more stringent with the evaluation of a mineralised area and finally becomes on-going when mining operations are under way. All these phases are carried out by geologists, metallurgists and mining engineers. They require analyses to carry out their functions but usually have no involvement in the analyses themselves. Analyses are carried out at commercial laboratories or in-house analytical laboratories. In the past in South Africa the tendency was for the larger mining houses to have their own centralised laboratories for exploration samples with each mine having it?s own laboratory to meet only that mine?s requirements. The centralised laboratory maintains QC functions at the subsidiary laboratories. In other mining areas of the world there has been a strong tendency for all geological analytical requirements, especially for exploration and mining, to be carried out at commercial analytical laboratories. In recent years there has been a tendency for mines in South Africa to move in the same direction. This paper discusses the factors that need to be taken into consideration when a new laboratory is being planned and automation is an option. The planning of the laboratory at the new Langer Heinrich Uranium mine in Namibia is discussed considering these factors. 2.0 REQUIREMENTS OF A MINING ANALYTICAL LABORATORY The purpose and requirements of a mining analytical laboratory are fairly obvious and can be summarised as follows :- 1. All mining operations must have access to analytical facilities, either in-house or commercial 2. The laboratory must be able to handle all the sample types submitted by the mining operation These can be mining, exploration and/or plant samples. They can comprise solids (rocks, bore-cores), slurries and/or liquids.

Four mining alternatives for exploiting an ultra-deep orebody were assessed through a multidisciplinary evaluation process which involved: the generation of a 3D geological model; the design and scheduling of life-of-mine layouts; the analysis of anticipated ventilation and cooling conditions; the study of rock-related risks of mining in ultra-deep stress environments; the logistic implications of transporting men, rock and materials; and, lastly, the economic implications of each option. Once results from the integrated mine design assessment were available, mine planners were faced with an important problem to solve: how to identify the optimal mine design alternative when numerous assessment measures and multiple decision criteria needed to be considered simultaneously? To address this ‘multiple-attribute decision problem’ and arrive at the ‘optimal layout for ultra-depth’, a generic decision methodology that uses principles of ‘utility’ was applied. The methodology assumes that ‘single-value risk estimators’ do not account for the inherent variability of real conditions. Therefore, risk estimators were represented by statistical distributions of their incremental changes, where applicable. The stochastic variables, once defined, are used as inputs in the ‘utility’-based layout decision scheme. This ‘utility’-based decision methodology offers a framework for mine design decisions to be made objectively, when complex trade-offs between multiple risk domains need to be considered simultaneously. "Historically, mining companies worldwide provided housing and developed towns to accommodate their employees. At the end of the 1980s this approach became less prevalent and attempts were made to mitigate the effects of mine development and mine closure on communities living near the mines. Permanent settlement in mining towns urgently needed to be minimized. Since the advent of democracy, South African policy has moved in the opposite direction, shifting the emphasis to creating integrated communities and encouraging home ownership. Despite this policy shift, however, mines continue to influence local housing conditions. One direct outcome has been the development of informal settlements. We surveyed 260 informal settlement households in Postmasburg, a small and remotely located town in the Northern Cape Province of South Africa. We found that because they employ contract workers and thus arouse expectations of employment, the mines here contribute extensively to the development of informal settlements. But local factors also contribute, and the functional role of informal settlements as a form of housing that supports mobility should not be underestimated. We also found that both municipal and mining company policies for informal settlements were inadequate. Finally, we found that low-income informal settlers not associated with mine employment suffered the highest levels of social disruption.IntroductionA mine generates demand for labour, which in turn generates demand for housing. When settlements spring up near a mine this often means poor housing conditions. In South Africa in the 1960s and 1970s mining companies invested heavily in company towns or mining settlements, but they have become increasingly hesitant to do so, for three reasons. First, declining resource prices in the mid-1980s and the 1990s compelled them to focus on core business interests and reduce the costs of peripheral activities such as housing (Bryceson and MacKinnon, 2013); second, at the turn of the 20th century they were often accused of taking over the role of local government (IIED, 2002) and consequently became hesitant to invest in developing mining towns; and third, changing labour regimes also curbed their investment in such towns (Haslam McKenzie, 2010). Increasingly, the companies began to endorse block-roster shifts, and outsourcing also became more common in the early 1990s. Block-roster shifts in Australia (together with improved technology) have meant that miners do not need to settle near the mines but can fly in and fly out and have their urban houses as their stable homes. This has had serious negative implications for housing in remote towns in Australia, particularly worker camps, large-scale renting out of available accommodation, and ‘hot-bedding’."

"Low-cost calcium lignosulphonate (CL), which is a byproduct of the wood pulping industry, was investigated as a potential binder during laboratoryscale pelletization of inertinite-rich high-ash coal fines from the Highveld Coalfield of South Africa. Coal-binder mixtures containing between 1 and 15% calcium lignosulphonate were prepared, pressed, and ultimate, proximate, porosity, XRD, and XRF analyses obtained. It was found that increased pressure during pelletization results in increased attractive forces, due to increased interparticle contact areas. FTIR analysis showed that chemical interactions occur between coal fines and the binder, as evidenced by the formation of new C-O ether-type bonds. The presence of moisture during pelletization enhanced surfactant activity of the binder. Chemical interactions between the coal and the binder seem to be mainly electrostatic, driven by Ca2+ from the calcium lignosulphonate, which may act as a bridge between the anionic parts of the binder and the surface of the coal. IntroductionCoal has over the years remained South Africa’s major energy source, with over 90% of the country’s electricity being produced via coal-fired processes (Arndt et al., 2016). Sasol’s coal conversion technology alone provides more than 40% of South Africa’s liquid fuel requirements (van Dyk, Keyser, and Coertzen, 2006). The production of high-grade coal requires the processing of run-of-mine (ROM) resources by a combination of processes which include crushing, screening, and washing (Radloff, Kirsten, and Anderson, 2003). These processes result in the generation of coal fines (< 0.5 mm) which, until recently, have been discarded into slimes dams (le Roux, Campbell, and Smit, 2012). Several issues are associated with slimes dams, among which are the costs of transportation of these fines from the place of origin to the discard point (often a considerable distance), and the potential environmental effects due to seepage of toxic materials into surrounding ecosystems (Clausen, 1973).Consequently, utilization of these coal fines is an area of great interest. Mechanical densification of fine coal by means of pelletization and/or briquetting to larger sizes for use in technologies that require lump coal, such as chain-grate stokers and fixed-bed gasifiers, has been shown not only to reduce environmental risks (Mangena et al., 2004), but also to significantly reduce storage and transportation costs (Mani et al., 2001). Pelletization is the process by which solid particles are consolidated into uniform, usually hard, impact-resistant agglomerates, rendering them useful as a fuel with sufficient calorific value for domestic and industrial utilization (Finney, Sharifi, and Swithenbank, 2009)."

This paper describes measurements of current and voltage done on submerged arc furnaces. The aim is to focus on and attempt to separate from one another the electric arc current and the current bypassing the arc through the charge. Toward this goal two measurement campaigns on AC-arcs burning on coke beds are ac-counted for. The first was done on a 150 kVA pilot furnace at SINTEF in Trondheim Norway, and the second one was done on a 48 MVA industrial furnace run by Icelandic Alloys in Iceland. The measurements were compared to simulations employing an advanced MFD arc model. The main results are that a coke bed does not necessarily behave as a linear conductor. However the warmer chemically transformed part of an operating Si-metal or FeSi furnace probably exhibits linear behaviour and passes a considerable fraction of the phase current, perhaps on some operating conditions, as much as 50%.

The utilization of computer assisted tomography (CT or CAT-scan)as general non-destructive examination (NDE) technique and as research tool for scientists in South Africa, is limited due to the relative unavailability or nonexistence of such specialized analytical equipment. Many medical hospitals are equipped with X-ray CT scanners for the diagnostic examination of patients but do not easily allow paleontologist or other scientist to utilize their very expensive equipment. As from 2003, Necsa hosts the South African Neutron Radiography (SANRAD) and tomography facility where neutrons from the SAFARI-1 nuclear research reactor and their penetrating power as well as X-rays as a complementing tool, are utilized in many R&D applications. This facility is being made available to HEI and specifically utilized by postgraduate students as part of their studies and/or by industry on an ad hoc commercial basis. The capability of these radiation imaging facilities at Necsa will be demonstrated in areas such as paleontology, geosciences and specifically the physical properties of rock and the distribution of minerals in borehole cores, petrophysics to predict the percentage tar/oil/water content within sandstone samples and others. The penetration capability of neutrons through specimens with a matrix of high atomic number (dense materials) and their ability to be attenuated by low atomic number material (light density) makes neutron imaging complementary to X-ray imaging. The capability of X-ray and gamma radiation for relatively easy penetration through specimens of low atomic number allows for viewing of imbedded high atomic number materials and density variation. X-ray micro focus radiography is capable of resolving objects of micro scale size that are micro distances apart whereas X-ray phase contrast radiography utilizes the wave properties of the electromagnetic spectrum of X-rays to clearly define edges of the specimen under investigation. Many applications with neutrons as imaging probe are successfully applied at several facilities across the globe such as at NIST in USA, Neutra at PSI in Switzerland, and ANTARES at FRM2 in Germany, etc, are documented 4?9, through world conferences on neutron radiography, for example. This is achieved through very well thought through and implemented instrumentation from the production of neutrons to their detection and interpretation of the images. The need arose at Necsa to upgrade the current facility from 42-year-old technology, which was successfully applied in neutron imaging over the past 10 years, to state-of-the-art technology found at European facilities. This initiative started under the auspices of an IAEA-TC programme for the period 2007?2010.
