An investigation into the kinetics and mechanism of the oxidation of iron (11) by oxygen in aqueous chloride solutions By R. P. COLBORN Pr. Eng., Ph.D. (Natal) and M. J. NICOLt B.Sc. Hons., Ph.D. (Rand) A reaction mechanism for the oxidation of ferrous chloride by molecular oxygen is developed. and the appropriate constants are evaluated. The effect of a number of cations and anions on the rate of oxidation has been tested.

South Africa remains the largest global producer of gold, accounting for 11.3 per cent of total world mine production, which amounted to 2520.2 t in 2005. The benefits and disadvantages associated with hedging practices in general, and among South African gold producers is examined. The wide variety and unique nature of risks faced by the mining industries provide a strong case for hedging. Only the principles of hedging, such as selling ounces of gold in the ground at a pre-agreed price for delivery at a future date as a cost-effective mechanism for price risk management, is discussed. Progressive and cumulative increases in the volume of forward sales in the major producing countries are considered by many to be the cause of the declining gold price over the past decade. In spite of negative publicity, forward selling continued as an industry-wide practice until recently (2002) when the global hedge book contracted by 352 t; contraction amounted to 158.6 t in first quarter of 2006. The objectives and benefits of hedging include continuity and stability of cash flows, stability in price achieved, reduction of frictional costs, and creating an effective management tool. The importance of a defined hedging strategy in reducing uncertainty about the hedging objectives is essential to a successful hedging policy. Historical patterns in hedging revenues at an industry level indicate five distinct periods during which the fortunes of hedgers have fluctuated. Finally, since 2001 the rising gold price and reduced price volatility through the consolidation in the global price means that the need to stabilize revenue flows is less urgent. This has meant that hedging is becoming progressively less important for the mining industry at large.

Over 206 million tons of hard coal were mined in South African collieries in 1996. Some 132.5 millions tons came from underground operations and approximately 120 million tons came from bord-and-pillar workings resulting in between 100 000 and 150 000pillars being formed. Coal pillar design remains a significant feature of South African mining. This paper reviews South African coal pillar design procedures in the light of 90 pillar collapses that have occurred since 1904. It shows that, while the current pillar strength formula is still valid within the original empirical range of Salamon1,cognisance must be taken of local conditions. Current South African coal pillar research is attempting to account for the variations in local conditions with the emphasis on the effect of discontinuities and pillar deterioration. It is suggested that a more holistic approach to pillar design be adopted to include a design methodology that examines the stability of the roof, pillar and floor of the underground workings. Using this approach, deviations from the empirical database used by Salamon and Munro will be incorporated into the design methodology resulting in more stable underground workings.

Optimal management of natural resources in mountain areas through decision support tools offered by remote sensing will go a long way in realization of the Ganesh Himal Zinc-Lead Project. The authors have a real life endeavor spanning over 37 years in developing a mining industry in a mountainous region of Nepal and an attempt to integrate with the development of other natural attributes of the region. With rapid acceleration of science and technology, humankind has acquired power to transform his environment countless ways and on an unprecedented scale. While mineral resources are the pillars on which we have built industry and infrastructure, industrial countries in the North have been in the forefront of technological advancements, the developed countries of the South have been at the receiving end of exploitation of mineral resources worldwide. A relationship with natural environment, re-crafted by the civilizing impulse, to meet human demands are upcoming challenges for management of natural resource in sustainable manner for a livable world.

"SynopsisFluorine – in the form of hydrofluoric acid, anhydrous hydrogen fluoride, elemental gaseous fluorine, fluoropolymers, volatile inorganic fluorides, and more – has played, and still plays, a major role in the nuclear industry. In order to enrich uranium, the metal has to be in the gaseous state. While more exotic methods are known, the standard and most cost-competitive way of achieving this is by means of uranium hexafluoride (UF6). This compound sublimates at low temperatures, and the vapour is enriched using centrifugal processes. The industrial preparation of uranium hexafluoride requires both elemental fluorine gas and anhydrous hydrogen fluoride (HF). HF is prepared by the reaction of sulphuric acid with fluorspar (CaF2). Fluorine gas in turn is prepared by the electrolysis of HF. Yellowcake is first converted to uranium tetrafluoride (UF4), using HF, after which the compound is treated with fluorine to yield UF6. After enrichment, the UF6 is reduced to UO2 for use in fuel elements in pellet form.South Africa has the largest reserves of fluorspar internationally, and is the third largest producer after Mexico and China. Fluorine technology has many associated difficulties, because of the reactivity of fluorine and the toxicity of HF. The main barriers to entry into the fluorochemical industry are thus the abilities to produce both HF and F2. Both these substances are produced locally, at the industrial scale, at Pelchem SOC Ltd. Should South Africa contemplate developing its own nuclear fuel cycle as part of the awaited new-build nuclear project, it will be imperative to leverage the existing skills with respect to fluorine technology, resident at both Pelchem and Necsa, for this purpose. This paper summarizes the fluorochemical skills developed locally over the past several decades, and suggests strategies for maintaining the technology base and developing it for the next generation of scientists and engineers.IntroductionFluorine chemistry has always had a very close relationship with the nuclear industry. Although the first mention of fluorspar was recorded in the sixteenth century, and the fundamentals had been well-developed by the Second World War, it was only during the Manhattan Project (Banks et al., 1994), when almost unlimited funds were made available for the large-scale industrialization of fluorine and related compounds, that the technology took off. Expertise in both the chemistry and the engineering aspects of fluorine is essential for the design and running of several of the unit processes in the nuclear fuel cycle."

In 1992, a paper was compiled highlighting a common-sense approach to electric smelting at Impala Platinum. Since then, the smelter complex has undergone considerable changes. Mineral economics, UG2 exploitation, and changing environmental legislation have enforced numerous process upgrades, yet a common-sense approach has always been adopted. This document details the major changes in the smelter complex at Mineral Processes (Minpro) over the past 15 years, and provides the rationale for the changes. A 21st Century worker is one who works less with his physical power and more with mental ability. Such a worker is more skilled than a labourer and is consequently rewarded accordingly. A21st Century supervisor is one who ensures that workers are constantly supported so that they can maximize safety and productivity. A 21st Century manager is one who constantly searches for ways to maximize returns for the various stakeholders. Given the well-known constraints in narrow reef mining, all of the above is meaningless unless a mining method is found which provides conditions which support the 21st Century initiatives. [ ] The identified mining method is a continuous non-explosive stope breaking system using rocksplitter technology. Rocksplitting is defined as: The fragmentation of rock through high energy pulse wave transmission in a fluid-filled hole or hydro fracturing. Shotholes are effectively filled with a water-based geland 30 grams of explosive after which the hole is closed off with a ?rocksplitting gun?.

Chalcopyrite represents the most important copper resource and is currently mainly exploited using pyrometallurgy. Bioleaching is an environmental-friendly and economic alternative to conventional mineral processing technologies. The technical feasibility of stirred tank reactor bioleaching of copper ore concentrates using acidophilic iron-/sulfur-oxidising bacteria is proven, however, often incomplete due to inefficient chalcopyrite dissolution. A decoupling of bacterial growth from bioleaching activity in one bioreactor by adjusting appropriate temperatures for both process steps allows for almost complete chalcopyrite dissolution. Separation of copper and recovery of other metals from the PLS was possible by implementation of different biological and chemical techniques. The Ferredox process has been proposed to treat limonitic laterite ores for cobalt and nickel recovery by means of anaerobic reductive dissolution with autotrophic, acidophilic bacteria. As a modification, aerobic reductive dissolution of laterites with acidophilic bacteria has shown economic and environmental advantages over anaerobic reductive dissolution. The reductive bioleaching technology has the potential to increase metal recovery in existing mines, and transform unexploited ores and limonite stockpiles into valuable resources. Paper written on project work carried out in partial fulfilment of B. Eng. (Metallurgical Engineering) The weathering of kimberlite can be accelerated with cations in solution if swelling of the kimberlite occurs in contact with the weathering medium. The type and amount of swelling clays present, along with the surface charge and cation valence, determine the degree of swelling that can occur. Crystalline swelling occurs by the incorporation of cations in the interlayer spacing of the silica sheets. Kimberlite exposed to cupric cations showed very strong weathering, indicating that this type of weathering may be considered a viable process option. Kimberlite fines generated after weathering with monovalent cations showed poor settling behaviour compared to kimberlite weathered with di-, and trivalent cations.

The efficiency of an ore-processing unit depends on the consistency of the characteristics of raw material entering the plant. When the mined ore is highly variable in quality, the only way to ensure consistency is to homogenize the ore prior to feeding to the processing plant. The homogenization can generally be achieved by the bed blending operation. Given that the stockpiling and reclamation processes are very expensive, it is necessary to design the process in such a way as to minimize variabilities of specified properties of raw material. In this paper, for alternative stacking types, optimal stockpile geometry is found in three stages: First, stockpile input is simulated by sequential Gaussian simulation, and then the variance reduction ratios (VRR) as a criterion of stockpile efficiency are calculated for various stockpile geometry scenarios by a stockpile simulator written in FORTRAN. Second, multiple regression analysis is performed to model the VRR by the use of stockpile length, the number of layers and stacker speed as the independent variables. Finally, the model is an optimization problem. Decision variables are the stockpile length, the number of layers, stacker speed and stacking type. The genetic algorithms (GA) are used to minimize the VRR. The approach was demonstrated on data from an iron orebody. The problem was to reduce fluctuations of iron, silica, alumina and lime contents in the stockpile output. The results showed that the approach could be used for the bed blending design efficiently. The introduction of extra low profile (XLP) mechanized equipment within Anglo Platinum is aligned with the overall New Mining Technologies strategy to focus on continuing modernization of our mining operations` incorporating injury-free production and cost-effective mining technologies. The method allows for the introduction of a suite of ultra-low profile equipment in narrow reef (1.2 m) stoping operations. For the first time it is now possible to achieve total trackless mechanization at these widths and indications are that XLP mining has the potential to add more value when benchmarked with conventional mining and low profile (1.8 m) room and pillar methods. Various mine layouts were tested at different sites within Anglo Platinum and the XLP breast mining layout proved to be the most effective. This paper describes the results of the trials at Waterval Shaft and concludes with recommendations on our future strategy on implementation of XLP technology within Anglo Platinum.

Much as one hopes to predict whether damaging seismicity might occur somewhere in the next shift, this is not possible at present. Recently, an analysis of seismicity at two mines has shown that a small increase in seismicity occasionally occurs before both large and small events. This analysis is extended here to five mines, with the same results. Earthquake seismologists forecast hazard in terms of the average incidence of earthquakes over the last 50 years, adjusted on an hourly basis according to the possibility of aftershocks of events that have happened. The rate of seismicity in any area remains approximately constant when expressed as seismicity per area mined, or better still, per unit of elastic strain energy released. It is suggested that seismic hazard in mines be estimated using historical seismicity and forward modelling, adjusted according to the possibility of aftershocks. In summary, medium-term forecasting of seismicity is viable; short-term prediction of large events is not.

Hochtief AG Germany has developed a comprehensive management and information system for the construction industry named Aristoteles. This system is an efficient supporting tool to manage a variety of construction sites as well as operating business units with required economic targets. As such, Aristoteles offers wide-ranging control of complex economic processes in construction in a consistent manner. In this paper the process oriented functions of the system will be described with special emphasis on finance accounting and cost control. The basic elements in this respect are tender estimation, creation of initial project budgets and running budgets, regular determination of work done and result forecast to the end of the project. Further, cost accounting, monthly reporting, and all balance-related postings are included. On the basis of the extensive reporting (targeted/actual cost comparison, cost manager, project report, actual/targeted hours worked comparison, overhead cost report, amendment report or project (result) lists of all projects realized by one business unit), the responsible managers can make justified project evaluations, project controls and variance analyses during the project period and derive appropriate management measures. Thus, Aristoteles includes all substantial elements for the risk management of the operational business. In big construction joint-stock companies it is of crucial importance to satisfy the information requirements of the investors. In this respect the system provides a transparent presentation of the financial, investment and profitability situation of the company. In the international construction industry the balancing rules according to IAS (International Accounting Standards) have already been used to a larger extent. In accordance with these rules the partial profits of the work during execution can be shown as realized even before completion of a long-term contract. The validity of Aristoteles will be outlined briefly. Major advantages using the system are highly enhanced accuracy of project controlling, systematic overhead allocation to projects, change of attitude of the project personnel due to increased cost consciousness and improved flow of information within the company.

The theme of the Congress was 'Resources and Technology', the intention being to highlight those basic technical aspects in the disciplines of geology, mining, extractive metallurgy, and metals technology that are required for successful mineral-based operations. The technical programme covered a fairly broad field, as is appropriate for the CMMI Congress, and was generally considered to be of a high professional standard; informative and, with the exception of some minor hitches, well-run. Parallel sessions were held in the four disciplines. All were well attended, and despite tight presentation schedules, certain valuable discussions developed.

Physical testing of rock support for rockbursting conditions has been carried out for over 40 years. A review of this testing shows that it has been mostly component based, rather than actually testing support systems. Further, it is concluded that none of the testing is truly representative of rockburst loading in a similitude sense. Similitude conditions are not achievable, mainly because the real conditions in a rockburst event, such as seismic source location and magnitude, wave frequencies, amplitudes, and interactions, are not all known. Because such information is not available, and because the results of all testing carried out to date have not been able to define, for support design purposes, the capacity of support systems, ongoing physical testing of rockburst support systems is essential. It is essential that the test should simulate, or actually take place in, a supported rock excavation. A rock support system is a combination of individual support components that work together to retain and contain the rock. In doing this, the components are subjected to loading by the rock and to interactive loading between one component and another. It is necessary to prove the capacity of such rockburst support systems by subjecting them to severe loading, as in direct blasting. The direct blasting approach, pioneered more than 40 years ago, probably still provides the greatest validity as a significant test of rockburst support capabilities, even though it does not simulate a rockburst. Direct blast testing of rockburst support systems in a surface environment, such as in a quarry or on exposed rock cutting surfaces, could represent a practical development of the approach, facilitating the execution and monitoring of tests.

Unplanned dilution and ore loss directly influence not only the productivity of underground stopes, but also the profitability of the entire mining process. Stope dilution is a result of complex interactions between a number of factors, and cannot be predicted prior to mining. In this study, unplanned dilution and ore loss prediction models were established using multiple linear and nonlinear regression analysis (MLRA and MNRA), as well as an artificial neural network (ANN) method based on 1067 datasets with ten causative factors from three underground longhole stoping mines in Western Australia. Models were established for individual mines, as well as a general model that includes all of the mine data-sets. The correlation coefficient (R) was used to evaluate the methods, and the values for MLRA, MNRA, and ANN compared with the general model were 0.419, 0.438, and 0.719, respectively. Considering that the current unplanned dilution and ore loss prediction for the mines investigated yielded an R of 0.088, the ANN model results are noteworthy. The proposed ANN model can be used directly as a practical tool to predict unplanned dilution and ore loss in mines, which will not only enhance productivity, but will also be beneficial for stope planning and design.

The earliest authenticated scientific report of the occurrence of platinum in rocks from the Bushveld Complex appears to be by William Bettel on 10 November 1906. Thereafter, prospecting of the chromite-rich rocks for platinum proved frustrating. I suggest that the resurgence of interest shown by Dr Hans Merensky in 1924 resulted from his realization that newly panned platinum had a different grain size from that in the chromite layers and indicated a different source rock, which he located, and it became known as the Merensky Reef.

Most mine safety initiatives in South Africa are doomed to limited success because of one simple fact: they are a-historical and un-cultural and do not deal with the serious ?legacy issues? that still negatively impact on safety, production, and relationships. We in the SA mining industry continually use imported, foreign safety concepts and systems that will not work fully in a South African context. ?The 4th Wave: Culture-Based Behavioural Safety?, as developed by Lance Bloch, an international award-winning clinical psychologist with 12 years? experience in the mining industry - focused mostly on Platinum - is making waves. He has been very successful in creating people-centred, empowered, high-performance safety cultures wherever he has worked. Not only does the 4th Wave transform the corporate culture of a mine, improving safety and production and building an environment of Ubuntu, but it also uses people?s cultures as a means of winning hearts and minds in the battle for safe production. Powerful relationships are built through engagement at all levels, leading to all being focused on the best needs of the company and its constituents as a whole. The programmes are no less than nation-building - something most necessary in the industry, with the pressures from community, unions, the DMR, and politicians. This presentation will describe and discuss the 4th Wave as an advance on previous safety technology and programmes, as particularly relevant to platinum mining in South Africa today.

In the HC FeMn production, better utilisation of coke and electric power is vital for reducing the production costs. The higher manganese oxides in the charge are reduced to MnO in the prereduction zone, where also the Boudouard reaction is active. These gas-solid reactions are to a large extent decisive for the total consumption of both coke and electrical power in ferromanganese production. In the present work formulas for calculating the Degree of prereduction have been developed for industrial practice. It shows that the typical Degree of prereduction is between 10-40%, but it may in good periods be as high as 60%. Statistical analysis has been done in order to find how various operational parameters influence the Degree of prereduction. A few parameters were observed to have an effect on the prereduction. Comilog ore definitely had a positiveinfluence on the prereduction, Comilog sinter and Mamatwan ore probably had a positive influence on the prereduction, all in relation to the average prereduction in the selected periods. Meanwhile, As man ore definitely, % H2O in raw materials and increasing Hd probably, had a negative influence on the prereduction. The findings for these raw materials were very much in coherence with the results of laboratory scale experiments performed, where the CO-reactivity of different ore materials was studied.
