10th COMMONWEALTH MINING AND METALLURGICAL CONGRESS-CANADA, 1974 The Commonwealth Council of Mining and Metallurgical Institutions has received and accepted an invitation from The Canadian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy for the 10th Commonwealth Mining and Metallurgical Congress to be convened in Canada in April, 1974, immediately following the Annual General Meeting of The Canadian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy. It is proposed that the Congress centre will be Montreal and that, after technical sessions, tours of operations will be arranged. In 2001 Platinum overtook gold in foreign revenue earnings for South Africa. The export sales from platinum group metals amounted to R29.3 billion as opposed to gold export sales of R28.6billion1. Organizations must undertake new ventures to replace old, worn-out and obsolete assets with new ones. These assets could be a building, a new product or process, a new mine, or anything that can help the organization to achieve its objective. These ventures are projects by their nature. When a project is pronounced a success, the judgement is usually based on some factual evidence, although not every one uses the same data. From the literature, it is obvious that there is a lack of consensus and objectivity as to what constitutes a successful project. The purpose of this paper is to address the following questions: ?What constitutes a successful project? ? How does one measure project success? ?How can one work toward project success? This paper addresses the requirements for project success of three of the primary stakeholders of a project, namely the business or client, the employees as far as the project team is concerned, and the local community. Indicators are developed into a work breakdown structure (WBS)-like chart to demonstrate success indicators. These indices take cognisance of all the constituents required for project success. The indicators are further developed to take cognisance of the requirements of the local communities. These indices are then weighted to arrive at a total score for the respective stakeholders. Using these WBS models, the success and performance of a project can be evaluated. This score is considered an objective measure of project success. Projects are evaluated more consistently across different projects and the project manager is provided with a management tool that can assist him/her in ensuring greater project success. The shortcoming of this approach is that the weights of the different indices have been estimated at this stage. Research will have to be conducted to more accurately reflect the weights assigned to the indices.

The metallurgical response of a difficult to treat coal and an easy to treat coal orebody were investigated in terms of the coal yield and the coal quality in a basic coal recovery flowsheet. The purpose of this paper is to show trends and derive principles for the treatment of different coal types. This investigation entailed using the LIMN simulator to simulate the metallurgical response by varying the plant operational parameters. The controllable plant variables investigated were: ?Cyclone size ?Screen and hydro-cyclone cut points ?Medium cut density ?Feed particle size distribution.

The use of face conveyors in gold mines by N. C. JOUGHIN. B.Sc. (Eng.). Ph.D. (Wits) (Member) and A. C. BUCKMASTER; M.A. (Cantab.) A mechanized stope-cleaning system has been developed around an armoured face conveyor, which was tested on the surface and in two underground trials. In the second underground trial, an average face advance of 8,5 m per month was obtained with a labour productivity of 27 ca/worker/month on a two-shift blast cycle. Two new face cleaning systems have been built, each incorporating an armoured face conveyor, a loading plough, a collapsible self-advancing barricade, and an integral roof-support system. These are about to be tested. A new type of reciprocating flight conveyor is being developed for stope use. This is cheaper, lighter, and more compact, and exhibits better wear characteristics, than an armoured face conveyor. In the early stages of the trials, this conveyor frequently achieved a singleshift blast cycle. It should be possible to achieve face advances of up to 40 ca/worker/month with a consistent one-shift blast cycle. The use of drill rigs and a self-advancing roof-support system would improve the productivity to over 50 ca/worker/month.

(Rand) Gold Fields of South Africa Limited is the largest producer of tin in the form of concentrates in South Africa, more than 55 per cent of the South African tin production being produced by the tin mines of the Group. Most of these concentrates are exported to be custom-smelted in overseas smelters, but the modern tendency is for tin-mining countries to establish their own smelters.

SYNOPSIS Bad eyesight and poor illumination can contribute to the occurrence of accidents in mines. As one part of a study of this problem, surveys of light intensities have been conducted in 19 gold mines. On 17 of the mines the surveys were on one underground level only, whilst in two of the mines more intensive surveys were conducted by measuring light intensities in all areas to determine any inter-mine variations between the levels of illumination. Readings of light intensity were taken underground at stations, tips, winches, stopes, conveyor belts, waiting places, pump stations, fitters' and boilermakers' workshops, ambulance rooms and in haulages. It is concluded that the average levels of illumination in South African gold mines are comparable with those reported in the literature for mines elsewhere. Standardisation of lighting conditions underground could eliminate inter- and intra-mine variation in illumination levels where they occur. A guide to mine illumination practice would assist such standardisation, and help increase the levels and effectiveness of illumination in mines. Some suggestions are made in this latter connection.

The dimension stone industry is not widely known or appreciated within the mainstream mining industry. This is in spite of the fact that the industry has grown at an average of over 7% per annum since 1980, and is estimated to now have a global turnover in excess of US$ 60 Billion per annum. Production technologies, particularly in the developed world where labour costs are high, have developed rapidly over the past two decades. Aligned with this, there has been a significant trend in adoption of a more professional mining approach in the exploration for and operation of dimension stone quarries. In fact, in the experience of the authors, mining a dimension stone deposit successfully if often more challenging from a mining engineering point of view than many conventional surface mines. This paper gives an overview of the industry and then proceeds to discuss best practice in exploration for dimension stone and to outline the latest technologies applied in mining of dimension stone. These technologies are varied and the specific combination of technologies applied in any given quarry is determined by both the physical properties of the material as well as the influence of geology which significantly impacts on the recovery of saleable material and hence the economics of the quarry.

Putting out fires in faces is an extremely complex and dangerous operation from the technological point of view which sometimes is accompanied by human victims. The new technology of fire-extinguishing sets giving directly into a mining face has been developed at the DNTU in order to put out such kinds of fires. The technique presupposes an availability of special installation placed on ventilation and conveyor mining drift. In case of fire a special fire-extinguishing powder is delivered with the help of remote control into mining face. Subjects, allowing to determine powder delivering distance in the frame of mining workings are presented in the report. The given technology substantially increases safety of accident work which are carried out in case of fire.

The simulation of mining in faulted ground was recently described by Crouch. His method is extended here to enable a wide range of non-homogeneous mining problems to be modelled. Essentially, the boundary conditions at geological interfaces are incorporated into the overall iterative solution, which is necessary if faults and joints are to be modelled realistically. Two examples are given to demonstrate the method: the mining of coal a seam below a thick dolerite sill, and the mining of a flat reef in close proximity to a vertical fault where hangingwall and footwall rocks have different properties.

The mining industry in South Africa faces real challenges with regard to the reduction of safety-related incidents. The purpose of this paper is to highlight the need for alternative interventions in addition to other safety improvement strategies already employed on mines. It furthermore supports an existing paradigm: incident investigations. An investigation into fatalities in the South African mining industry shows that although great progress has been achieved through the reduction in fatalities in all sectors of the industry over the last few years, more can and should be done to achieve status of ?zero harm?. Fatalities and lost time injuries on mines result not only in large financial losses, but also in disruptions of mining operations in general through Section 54 stoppages to resolve the situation. The approach of the paper is therefore not to try and prove whether there is high fatality rate and/or lost time injuries, but in what way incident reconstruction simulations (IRS) can have an impact in the future prevention of such incidents. The challenge therefore lies in the utilization of pro-active systems that would show employees the possible outcomes of being exposed to certain hazards. In real life, these incidents cannot be re-enacted and in most cases we can only learn through the previous mistakes of others. A virtual reality (VR) education and training system will enable employees to be ?exposed? to different hazards in a safe environment, and simulation, in a ?forgiving? environment, of the possible consequences of unsafe acts. According to the Occupational Safety and Health Act (OSHA), unsafe acts and unsafe conditions are indirect causes of safety-related incidents, but there are also direct causes; for example, unplanned release of energy and/or hazardous material, and basic causes, for example, management safety policies, personal factors, and environmental factors. The administrative workload associated with any incident investigation places a large burden on the investigation team, and in most cases other employees are informed through vague administrative processes what the ?real cause? for the incident/accident was. New preventative strategies are often put in place without showing the employees what the real causes of the incident/accident were. This can be mitigated through the use of interactive VR simulations/animations of the hazards that they are exposed to and how to deal with them. If VR interventions are not used as proposed by this paper, the real causes and consequences of almost all fatalities and lost time injuries may never be fully understood. This paper also emphasizes what potential impact IRS could have on the prevention of future mine incidents as part and parcel of a pro-active risk prevention strategy. The intention is therefore not to replace any other risk prevention strategies, but to visually enhance the reality of the incident. Analyses have revealed that the presence and Orientation of geological discontinuities ahead of the mine face can be predicted from the data produced by this system.

Your article on page 202 of the August 1993 Journal refers. I was surprised to read that this grant was first introduced in 1984 as it was awarded to me (albeit under the auspices of The Institution of Mining and Metallurgy, London) as long ago as 1964, and I spent two very profitable months in Sweden at that time. Training in job-skills * A South African mine is leading the way in providing alternative job-skills to staff in a bid to upgrade services in local communities and create greater economic empowerment. In recent months, 85 employees of the Associated Manganese Mine (ASSMANG) in the Western Cape have learnt skills as diverse as candlemaking, shoemaking, concrete-product manufacturing, and brick production through a newly established community training centre.

This paper describes DRA?s involvement with the expansions at Tati Nickel, Phoenix Mine, that have taken an initial plant design of 3.6 Mtpa (originally built by Murray & Roberts), up to 5 Mtpa, and eventually 12 Mtpa capacity. Initially, the plant could not achieve the design name plate capacity for the first few years of operation, as a consequence of the notoriously hard and abrasive nickel ore affecting primarily the operation of the crusher circuit. In order to extend the life of mine, Tati? assessed and then redefined the mining plan, choosing to increase the Phoenix mine reserves to a lower cut-off grade. In order to increase nickel units produced, the concentrator had to therefore treat additional tonnage at lower head grades. Site investigations and field tests around the comminution circuits are outlined, indicated that the milling circuit could be increased to 650 tph, from the initial design of 470 tph, for a similar feed grade and recovery. A project was initiated to debottleneck the crusher circuit and achieve the new target throughput. (Project 5M). This was followed by a feasibility study of the impact of pre-concentration by DMS, which after promising laboratory tests, was followed up with the installation of a 200 tph ?demonstration? plant. The success of this demonstration plant provided the impetus to expand the supply to the 5 Mtpa mill from a large preconcentration stage. A gyratory crusher (one of the largest and most powerful) will receive ore directly from the open pit operation, feeding into a secondary-tertiary crushing plant followed by a modular DMS preparation circuit. Four large DMS processing modules have been installed to treat the tonnage, with high expected rejection levels. Finally a review of the DMS process capability on an ostensibly disseminated micro-gabbro nickel ore is given, which shows the remarkable impact that preconcentration can have on an operation, both in terms of profitability and a successful process ?expansion?. The performance of the DMS plant has significantly extended the life of mine, allowing the mine to significantly reduce mine cut-off grades and curb its previously selective mining practice.

AngloGold Ashanti?s Obuasi Mine, in Ashanti Province, Ghana, operates a plant utilizing bacterial oxidation technology. The mineralization consists predominately of arsenopyrite with gold associated in the sulphides. The plant was commissioned in 1994, at that time was the largest BIOX® plant in the world, and has been operated by AngloGold Ashanti since 2004. The constraints identified in the plantwere the flotation capacity, BIOX® feed size and disruptions to the BIOX® process. This paper focuses on the practical steps that were followed in order to increase the recovery of the plant. The original plant design was based on a head grade of 10 g/t and an overall recovery of 86.5%. In 2007 the plant was operating at an overall recovery of 79.2% at a head grade of 5.6 g/t and this has improved to 80.6% at a head grade of 5.8 g/t during the last quarter of 2008. Additional improvement to 81.5% are expected by the end of April 2009. Improvements that have been implemented include: ?Replacement of the regrind mill ?Installation of additional float capacity ?Installation of a scavenging circuit ?Installation of a complete water treatment plant. In addition we have focused on the effect of the water circuit on the BIOX® process and the steps involved in correcting this problem. The water circuit was originally designed as an open circuit and through environmental considerations the circuit was closed towards the end of 2007. The bacteria in the BIOX® are particularly sensitive to cyanide and cannot tolerate levels above 0.05ppm (free cyanide), this required extensive modifications to the water circuit. The plant improvement project is ongoing and the current scope of work should be complete by the end of April 2009. Further research and development work is being planned, which includes a ?white rot bacteria? that can consume the preg-robbing carbon and oxidize the sulphide in a single pass.

Although remote sensing technology has been available for many years, it has rarely been used for monitoring mining activity. Recent studies indicate that remote sensing is also a valuable tool for managing and planning certain aspects of the mining operation. In this paper, we examine areal expansion of marble quarries and the affected vegetation over a period of 10 years in the Mugla region in Turkey, using geographic information system (GIS) and remote sensing (RS) techniques. Images captured by ASTER Level 3A01 (3D Ortho Data Set), Landsat 5, and Landsat 7 satellites between 2001 and 2009 were used for the analysis. Changes in the natural vegetation as a function of the production level in the marble quarry were calculated using the normalized difference vegetation index. According to the study results, land cover and natural vegetation decreased by less than 3 per cent and 1 per cent respectively between 2001 and 2009, following an upsurge in mining activity in the region.

The 8th Annual University of Cape Town (UCT)/ University of Stelenbosch (US) Minerals Processing Symposium was held at the Van Riebeeck Hotel in Gordon's Bay on 3rd August, 1990, under the auspices of the Western Cape Branch of The South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy. The primary object of this meeting was to give research students at UCT and US the opportunity to present their work to a critical audience from industry, and to obtain feedback regarding the research needs of the minerals industry. Although the emphasis of these symposia is on work in progress at US and UCT, they also create an excellent opportunity for informal discussion between academics and metallurgists in industry. The first symposium in this series was held in 1982 at US, while the symposium in 1989 was replaced by the International Colloquium on Developments in Froth Flotation, also held in Gordon's Bay.

The dewatering of coal, and particularly fine coal, continues to challenge coal prepatration engineers to find a cost-effective solution. With known world oil reserves being depleted daily, it is envisaged that the future price of coal may justify the use of thermal drying to achieve lower coal product moisture levels. The effect of exposure of the coal to elevated toemperatures on the mechanical strength of the coal was investigated. It was found that temperature does not play a major role in determining the volume breakage of a particle and that other variables such as orientation during impact has a much greater influence. A double breakage mechanism was reported during the grindability tests. Surface, as well as volume breakage, occurs for the first 4 minutes while only surface breakage takes place thereafter. Due to this double breakage action, it was found that exposure to temperature does play a role in the amount of breakage and breakage rates during grindability tests. It was also concluded that a particle will break to an optimum size due to impact, after which only its surface will grind away as it is subjected to breakage forces.

The South African gold and platinum deposits were formed in very different ways and yet both have many similarities. They are flat dipping tabular orebodies, extremely narrow and located in hard abrasive country rock. The mining methods employed are also similar. Primary access is via shafts or declines; secondary access is via haulages and cross-cuts; and tertiary access is from raises. The proposed solution for rapid access described in this paper is focused on the haulages and cross-cuts.

Deposition of gold-bearing deposits in the Witwatersrand Basin was controlled by hydraulic processes. These resulted in the formation of independent sedimentological facies areas having different statistics and semivariograms. Consequently, when there are indications that data are a mixture of statistical populations, it is important to decompose them into statistical subpopulations and analyse these independently. However, in the case of actual mining, physical position and extent of sub- populations are important and, as a consequence, any decomposition of data must take space into account if it is to be of use. An algorithm for the spatial decomposition of data into its sub-populations is described and is applied to real data taken from the Witwatersrand. Two distinct areas with completely different geostatistical parameters were revealed.
