Ground water and associated pore pressure represent elements which can have a negative impact on surface mining and slope stability. Ground water flow and deformation within a slope influence each other. An increase in pore pressure will result in a decrease of effective stress; and conversely if the pore pressure decreases, the effective stress increases. Slope analysis and slope design calculations require good information on pore pressure distribution around an open pit excavation. Until recently very little pore pressure data was available and assumptions had to be used. Location and design of measuring points depend on geological and structural setting, geotechnical domains and practicality. Good planning and the use of sensitive point piezometers to measure in situ pore pressures means that real-time data can be collected and used for the construction of flow nets, the determination of pore pressure distribution around an open pit mine, the validation of the dewatering/depressurization requirements, the calculation of the efficiency of the dewatering system and finally the use of pore pressure data in slope stability analysis. The recommended layout for a monitoring system, types and design of piezometers, data collection and use of the pore pressure data are presented.

After the presentation of the paper the President said: "Thank you, Professor Howat, for so ably introducing the paper prepared by yourself, Dr Jochens and Mr Wolhuter. Once again we are deeply indebted to you for bringing to our attention a new development in the metallurgical field, this time a technique for assessing the suitability of slags for the production of slag cement, and thereby providing a means of turning a waste material into a valuable asset. May we hope that this will lead to an end to unsightly slag dumps and, at the same time, to some conservation of our local limestone resources. Discussion within this Institute on the problems of cement manufacture, has of recent years been all too infrequent, and we thank you for bringing this interesting and important subject again to our notice. We are doubly grateful to you and your co-authors. Paper written on project work carried out in partial fulfilment of BSc (Eng) (Chemical) The generation and control of manganese sulphide particle size distribution using various mixing configurations were investigated. Specifically, this paper discusses how varying mixing intensities on a macro and micro scale affect the resultant manganese sulphide particle size distribution (PSD) at a constant concentration. The mixing variations were achieved using various Y- and T-mixers as premixing devices into a jacketed, agitated vessel. The reagents used to generate the seeds were aqueous manganese sulphate and sodium sulphide solutions. The results showed that the absence of micromixing resulted in very poor control of the particle size distribution, the particle size and the number of particles produced. This was due to the fact that the macromixing time is much greater than the corresponding precipitation time, resulting in different mixing regions existing within the reactor. From the micromixing experiments, the T?mixer was found to be the most effective mixing device at lower concentrations due to the T-mixer providing a faster mixing time than the other mixing configurations, thereby effectively localizing the supersaturation and hence controlling the precipitation. The results obtained from the direct addition without the extension pipe (i.e. short mixing time) indicated a general increase in mean particle size and decrease in total particle number at reagent concentration of 0.007 mol.dm-3as compared to the corresponding micromixing experiments. The phenomenon may be due to incomplete crystallization at the immediate exit of the mixing device. Further experiments need to be conducted before any conclusions can be drawn about the precipitation mechanisms.

The aspect of sustainability of ferroalloy processes has long been a serious matter for consideration in many of the world?s industrialized countries. A number of countries can be named where ferroalloy plants that were once flourishing, have all but disappeared. One of the most important factors playing a role in this type of occurrence is the cost and availability of quality raw materials. Given that all natural resources will be depleted with time, users are compelled to develop new processes that are sustainable in the changing environment. The DC arc smelting furnace is one such process that has proved itself, and has gained increasing popularity over the past two decades. This process, amongst other benefits, directly addresses the use of more readily available and more affordable raw materials in ferroalloy production. Since early in the new millennium, GLPS has been involved in various studies for different clients of furnaces for the production of ferroalloys. Two of these recent studies have culminated in the design, construction and commissioning of DC arc furnaces for the production of ferrochrome. One of these furnaces is a 10 MW unit at Mogale Alloys, and the other a 60 MW unit at the Middelburg plant of Samancor Chrome. This paper discusses the approach taken in the design and construction of these two furnaces, which, although varying significantly in size and capacity, are very similar in many other aspects of their design. As the grade of the gold (head grade) in the ore supplied to a reduction plants falls, the efficiency of recovery of the metal drops. This is not simply due to a fixed grade lost in the residue, since the residue grade is itself a function of the head grade. A multi-disciplinary approach was used in the construction of a model to represent the relationship between head grade and recovery efficiency. The model is a physicochemical one based on (i) the reaction characteristics of cyanidation, (ii) the milled-ore selection characteristics of gravity concentration, and (iii) the nearly log normal distribution of gold grades and particle sizes in ore reserves. The model was used to set sound target levels for recovery efficiency for a given head grade at a given plant, against which the performances of the plant equipment can be judged for control purposes.

You wouldn't start excavating before testing core samples, so why would you approve a project plan before all factors have been identified, reviewed and addressed? Even a champion sports team made up of the best players can't produce optimal results without a well understood and agreed game plan. Could an F1 racing team produce their outstanding performance without rigorous evaluation and testing of the factors for successful performance? Why would we expect a capital works project team to be able to get it right without an understanding and an involvement in setting and implementing the overall game plan and without an understanding of all stakeholder requirements? For International Power's Hazelwood (IPRH) mine in Victoria, the challenge was development and delivery of a 40 year mine plan, ultimately involving relocation of existing mine operations into an adjacent new coal field, land acquisitions and major environmental and other approvals to allow diversion of three streams, a highway, an Over Dimension route and other infrastructure in a political and environmentally sensitive atmosphere. The lessons from International Power Hazelwood's (IPRH) experience are: ? that the clear set of project principles and guiding values ensured delivery of a robust plan; ? a robust plan can withstand significant change; and ? value management (VM) played an important role in providing assurance, to all, that the plan was sound at both the strategic and micro levels. This Hazelwood mine project included five major VM workshops. The first was a critical review process in addition to design and cost reviews. This VM workshop was used to analyse, at a high level, the preferred coal mining sequence and design concepts, together with the interaction between design elements, risks and costs. In addition to this, the workshop provided an agreed common pathway for all downstream decisions. A second VM study was conducted to ensure that the proposed plan and design for relocation of the conveying systems from the existing mine into the new field were planned for optimum achievement from a whole of life cost, time, operational and maintenance perspective, plus the logistics of continuing operations while relocating assets. A third study followed to review the Conveyor Transfer Alliance and review functional design. A fourth VM study workshop was formed at the start of Phase 2 Alliance to ensure that the best value for money was being achieved through the current design, schedule and project arrangements and that all interfaces between parties had been reviewed and responsibilities were clear and understood. Other studies are outlined later in this paper. This paper details the evaluation criteria and processes used in the project evaluation that led to the WestField Mine Development.

The transportation of men, material and rock in mechanization programmes is often neglected, or at least plays only a secondary function, as the primary focus is on proving the technology. This is despite recognition of the fact that mechanization is essential if gold mines are to remain competitive. However, the use of totally mechanized systems will require further research in the short to medium term before they become generally available. Thus, there is a real need to improve mechanized men, material and rock transportation systems as they are currently used. This applies to both reef horizons as well as to horizontal transport systems. ABSTRACT: The paper describes the application of both continuum and discontinuum modelling to the study of the stability conditions of the Alpetto mine, a high rock cut located in Cesana Brianza (Italy). The main objective is to provide valuable information for future mine planning and for the assessment of the stability conditions of the abandoned high rock cuts. Continuum modelling involved the applications of the finite difference method, whereas the distinct element method was used for discontinuum modelling. RESUME: L'article décrit l'application des méthodes de modélisation continue/discontinue pour l'étude des conditions de stabilité de la mine d' Alpetto, située à Cesana Brianza (Italie). Le but du travail consiste à determiner des paramètres utiles vis-à-vis du projet et d'estimer les conditions de stabilité de l'amas rocheux au terme de l'exploitation de la mine susmentionnée. La modélisation continue a impliqué l'application de la méthode des différences finis alors que la méthode des éléments distincts a été utilisée pour la modélisation discontinue. KURZFASSUNG: Der Artikel beschreibt die Verwendung der Modellierung von continuum und discontinuum zur Untersuchung/Studium der Stabilitätsbedingungen von der Alpetto Mine, hohe Aushubsfront in einer Felsmasse die sich in der Gemeinde von Cesana Brianza befindet. Das Hauptziel dieser Arbeit ist die Festlegung von Parametern die zur Planung nützlich/behilflich sein können sowie auch die Möglichkeit zur Analyse/Auswertung der Stabilität der Felsmasse-Front nach Aufhebung der Nutzung derselben. Die continuum Methode/Analyse wurde verwendet durch Unterstützung der Finite Differenz Methode da man für die Analyse der discontinuum (Fels als discontinuum beschrieben) der Distinct Elemente Methode verwendet hat.

A frequency distribution model plays a fundamental role in ore evaluation, especially for the feasibility study of new deep gold mines. The geological complexity of the reefs being mined at present in the Witwatersrand basin poses some difficulties regarding the modeling of the underlying ore-value distribution. This geological complexity has given rise to a need for more applicable distributional models. This paper places the geology of the Witwatersrand basin in perspective and draws some important conclusions from the genesis of the deposition. In addition to the three-parameter lognormal model, two more-general distributional models are proposed. These are the compound lognormal (CLD) and log-generalized inverse Gaussian (LN-GIG) distributions. A detailed, although preliminary, comparative study of these two more-general models with the three-parameter lognormal model is described, and the efficiencies of the estimates and modeling are analysed. It is found that the broad assumption that gold grades follow a three-parameter lognormal law is not always the case, and the need to test for departures from log normality should be emphasized so as to ensure the use of appropriate models.

Limestone formations in the United States can be subject to relatively high horizontal stresses due to the existence of tectonic loading of the limestone strata. Underground limestone mines use the room-and-pillar method, in which 12- to 18-m-wide rooms are typically excavated. The stability of these excavations can be compromised by the horizontal stress, resulting in a rockfall hazard. Rockfalls are the cause of 15% of all reportable injuries in underground limestone mines. Horizontal stress related damage can occur in the form of guttering along one or more sides of an excavation, roof beam buckling or oval shaped roof falls, with the long axis perpendicular to the major horizontal stress. Numerical analyses show that the pillar layout and orientation of the mine workings have an effect on the horizontal stress distribution within the roof. The effects of high horizontal stresses can be mitigated by orientating the heading development direction parallel to the maximum horizontal stress, reducing the number of cross-cuts and offsetting the cross-cuts to limit the potential lateral extent of horizontal stress related roof falls. The modeling approach described in this paper can be used as a tool to evaluate potential roof failure and optimize the stability of room and pillar layouts.

The present study investigates the feasibility of using some materials as start-up slags for the extraction of magnesium metal from Egyptian dolomite ores by the Magnethermic technique. The reduction of roasted dolomite (dolime) takes place in a closed evacuated electric arc furnace (small Magnetherm reactor) using ferrosilicon as a reducing agent and liquid start-up slag as a reduction bath under an inert atmosphere. The operational parameters affecting the stabilization of the start-up slag composition and the extraction of magnesium such as reducing agent stoichiometry, reduction temperature, and time were investigated. The dolomitic charge was in the form of sintered briquettes. The charge was reduced under an argon atmosphere in the Magnetherm reactor for constant period and constant temperature. The results showed that the clinker can be used as a start-up slag for the magnethermic process. Also, the optimum conditions for the extraction process were found at 2XSi stoichiometry to give maximum reduction of 80% after 15 minutes reduction time at a temperature of 1550°C. XRD and XRF measurements were used to determine the phases present and the extent of reduction of magnesium, respectively. A study was made of the performance of a rod mil operating without liter bars and with different arrangements of liter bars in the lining. . The results show that striking improvements in performance, increased throughput, and reduced consumption of liner metal and electrical energy can be obtained by a change in the geometry of the liter-bar arrangements within a mil. Rod mils of equal size fitted with the same arrangement of liter bars but operating at different speeds presented apparent anomalies in the relative consumption efficiency of electrical energy for the production of material smaller than 75 µ m. Marked savings in the consumption of liner metal were achieved by the use of an arrangement of alternating lines of higher and lower liter bars. A study of the relative performances of two large tube mils showed that the use of liter bars in one of the mils resulted in a marked reduction in the consumption of liner metal and electrical energy per ton of material smaller than 75 µ m in the product.

Extraction of isolated blocks of ground with elevated levels of stress and/or seismicity is a common occurrence in South African gold mines. Isolated blocks of ground that are divorced from the main orebody and are bound by complex, dip and strike parallel, non-persistent geological structures dominate the Klerksdorp gold fields. No quantifiable methods exist to assess the risk associated with mining these and other classes of remnants. A case history, from a gold mine that planned to extract three remnant blocks hosted in a large complex fault system, is used to illustrate the decision making process based on a combination of underground observations, numerical and seismic techniques. Simple risk estimation matrices were developed and used to estimate remnant-mining risk and finally to quantify the decision on which of the three remnant blocks could be extracted at the lowest possible geo-mechanical risk. Il est courant dans les mines aurifères sud-africaines d’extraire des blocs de terrain isolés qui possèdent des niveaux élevés de contraintes et/ou sismicité. Les régions aurifères de Klerksdorp sont dominées par des blocs de terrain isolés qui sont séparés du gisement principal et qui sont retenus par des structures géologiques non continues, à parallèle de pendage et direction, et complexes. Il n’existe pas de méthodes quantifiables pour évaluer le risque associé à l’extraction de ce genre et autres genres de résidus. Une observation de cas, celle d’une mine d’or qui avait l’intention d’extraire trois blocs de résidus qui se trouvaient dans un grand système complexe de faille, est utilisée pour illustrer le processus décisionnel basé sur une combinaison d’observations souterraines, et de techniques numériques et sismiques. Selected members of the slag system were reduced in graphite crucibles in an argon atmosphere, and the physicochemical properties of the reduced derivatives of the slags were determined in inert crucibles. It was found that slags having magnesium aluminium titanate as the primary phase before reduction underwent an increase in liquidus temperature, accompanied by a change in the primary phase. No analogous behaviour could be detected for the slags having perovskite as the initial primary crystallization product. In most instances, the viscosity of the melt passed through an initial minimum, followed by an increase as the reduction time was extended. Increased MgO/CaO ratio. basicity, titania content, and reduction temperature all served to accelerate thickening. During reduction, the electrical conductivity of the slags tended to rise relative to the value for the unreduced melt.

Excessive build-up of methane and water pressures was identified as the leading cause of some Q/the roof falls in a coal mine in the eastern Transvaal. In order to characterize the migration of the methane and water into and around the mined coal seam, a laboratory investigation of the permeability of the roof strata was undertaken. The aim of the investigation was to correlate changes in the fades with changes in permeability to enable the prediction of possible zones of pressure buildup. The tests were carried out on samples from borehole core that had been obtained from the roof strata as part of the mine exploration programme. Permeability measurements were then conducted under atmospheric and triaxial-stress conditions. For the tests under atmospheric conditions, a modified Ohle cell was used and, for the tests under triaxial-stress conditions, a modified Hoek cell was used. The liquid equivalent permeability?s of the different samples were obtained by use of ASTM D4525- 85, and these were then used as a basis for comparison. Facies type, i.e. grain size, was found to have an influence on the permeability but, owing to the variable nature of the sediments, a range of permeability rather than a specific permeability value was associated with each type of Jades. The measured permeability was bound to decrease with an increase in gas pressure. The liquid equivalent permeability was bound to increase with an increase in grain size for the coarser-grained Jades, and to decrease with an increase in grain size for the finer-grained types. The application of an external stress regime to the sample was bound to reduce the permeability, but the amount of the reduction depended on the type of stress. The permeability was also found to depend on the recent stress history of the sample. The authors conclude that the methods described are useful for the correlation of facies type with permeability, but that the results are sensitive to changes in locality.

The fundamental ideas of Computer Aided Lignite Mining (CALM) with respect to hardware and software used at Rheinbraun are explained and outlined in detail. The computers used in the main data processing department and in the different departments in the mines are described. Special emphasis is laid upon the network connecting the computers at different places for data-exchange. Concerning technical applications, the main facilities of CALM are deposit and pit modelling, complex geomechanic computations and mass calculations, data recording from the production process in the pits and refining plants, and detailed information and planning systems for water management and mining equipment. Concerning administrative applications, the main facilities of the software are the accounting system with cost controlling and planning, the materials management system with stock control, forward planning and computer supported order procesing, a system for the administration of property within and surrounding the mines, and systems for personnel administration and payroll. The various software systems developed for these application and the influence of data processing technique, such as data base management and the interconnection of data processing systems, are demonstrated.

(Member) The iron charged to the basic oxygen furnace at the steel plant of Highveld Steel and Vanadium Corporation has a relatively high sulphur content. Considerable emphasis is therefore placed on the reactivity of the lime. An investigation of the lime used at the steel plant showed that its reactivity had deteriorated considerably both during transport from the supplier (Northern Lime Company) and during storage and handling at the steel plant. The deterioration on the steel plant is the more severe, and is due to hydration and carbonation. Rapid deterioration is a characteristic of highly reactive lime when exposed to the atmosphere. Plant tests showed that the desulphurization efficiency decreases with a decrease in the reactivity of the lime. The addition of slag rich in manganous oxide to the furnace considerably improved the efficiency of desulphurization that can be achieved with limes of lower reactivity and with lime that has deteriorated. A decrease in particle size of lime of lower reactivity greatly increased the desulphurization efficiency. Less lime of higher reactivity is required for the same degree of desulphurization to be achieved. Lime of higher reactivity gives rise to slags with lower ferrous oxide contents and hence the steel yield is increased.
