[Consider a square block W in an ore body S2, to be valued from one centre sample w, and one corner sample w2 (Fig. 9.1). The sample set is ws = Iw,;w21. We can estimate the block average µw by the average of the sample values x, and x2: µw = 'z (x, + xz). (9.1) The error made is measured by the estimation variance: o' (ws to W) = 2 - (ws; W) - - (ws;ws) - - (W; W). (9.2) However, we know that the centre sample w, gives more information about the block value than the corner sample w2. In the example studied in § 8.4, where w, and w2 were considered to be points, we found that of (w, to W) was nearly one third smaller than o2E (w2 to W), therefore when estimating W one should give more weight to w, than to w2. In general, when evaluating a block W from a set of n samples ws, where WS = l w;w2; ... wn1, a better estimator of µw can be obtained if we give different weights to the sample values, depending on the size and the positions of the samples. Some desirable properties of such an estimator µw are: ? It should be a linear function of the sample values xi: n µw = bi xi (9.3) =t where bi = weight given to sample x . ? It should be unbiased, i.e. its expected value should be equal to the true block value: E [µw - µw] = 0. (9.4) ? The mean squared error of estimation of µw should be a minimum E [(µw - µw)2] = a minimum. (9.5) The estimator which satisfies these properties is a minimum variance, linear and unbiased estimator, and is known as the kriging estimator. The corresponding error of estimation is the kriging error. This estimator is also known as the BLUE (for Best Linear Unbiased Estimator) estimator. This was named by Matheron in acknowledgement of the early work of Krige's in the optimization of the evaluation of the South African gold mines. Job evaluation and the changing wage pattern by D. L. VAN COLLER, B.A.(Cape Town), M.A., B.Litt.{Oxon.) (Visitor) This paper sets out to show how changing forces are affecting the techniques that have been used in the evaluation of Black jobs on gold mines in the Anglo American Group since the introduction of job evaluation in 1961. Initially, job evaluation was essentially a management tool designed to differentiate jobs in a limited skill spectrum and thereby permit the establishment of a 'many stepped' job ladder for Black employees to climb. With the changing wage pattern, job evaluation is becoming an industrialrelations tool aimed at recognizing the skill and effort contributed by the worker so that the pay relationships between jobs are seen to be equitable by the employees.

SYNOPSIS The phase equilibria, viscosities and sulphur capacities of titaniferous slags were determined in the composition range of CaO = 30 to 0 per cent, MgO = 0 to 30 per cent, SiO2 = 19.69 per cent, AI.O. = 13.12 per cent and TiO2 = 37.19 per cent. The phase equilibria were determined by high temperature microscopy, the viscosities were measured using a rotating outer cylinder viscometer and the sulphur capacities were evaluated from the results obtained by equilibrating the slag in a gas stream of CO, CO2 and SO2. The behaviour of these titaniferous slags under reducing conditions was examined. Possible use of the slags for aggregate, or slag-cement, and the possibility of extracting the TiO2 are discussed. These titaniferous magnetites occur as segregations in the gabbro body and the TiO2 is mainly present within the structure of other constituent minerals but also occurs in smaller amounts as ilmenite and ulvospinel. The vanadium is thought to be present in the iron oxide phase due to isomorphous replacement of the iron. Until very recently, it was feared that the high titania content of these titaniferous magnetites would militate against their value as useful iron ores. The capacity of grinding mills can be maximized by use of measurements of mill power and bearing pressures. The criterion is as follows. If the derivatives with respect to time of the power and bearing pressure signals have the same sign, the volume of the mill load is smaller than the optimum value; if they have different signs, the volume of the mill load is greater than the optimum value. Few attempts have been made to use measurements of bearing pressure in the estimation of absolute values for the parameters that define the state of the mill load (e.g, mass, volume, and dynamic angle of repose) because the bearing-pressure signal is a complex function of these and other parameters. This paper gives a mathematical model that relates bearing pressures to these parameters. The theoretical values obtained from this model are compared with experimental values, and it is concluded that the model constitutes a good description of experimental reality. If accurate measurements of the load supported by each bearing are available, the model can be used in the estimation of the mass of the load in the mill. If independent estimates of the volume of the load or the dynamic angle of repose are available, the other parameter can be estimated from measurements of the bearing loads.

Mr Philipus Albertus von Wieligh, a former President of the Chamber of Mines and Executive Director of Johannesburg Consolidated Investment Company, died in Johannesburg on Thursday, 28th December, 1989. He is survived by his widow, a daughter, and two grandchildren. Mr Von Wieligh served the mining industry for 45 years. The P.A. von Wieligh Park in Hilshaven on the West Rand is named after him.

The history of development of analytical techniques for the determination of elastic behaviour around tabular excavations, is examined briefly. The design of a completely digital system, which appears to afford considerable improvements in speed, accuracy and versatility compared with existing analogue methods, is described in detail. The practical application of this system is illustrated by means of an actual underground problem. The results are presented, not in the form of specific solutions to the mine's problems, but as indications of the versatility and scope of the new method.

This paper reviews some of the traditional methods of reserves estimation based on lognormal distribution with or without an additive constant. In the rush to computerize mine planning and grade control generaly, proven estimation methods, such as Sichel's t, seem to have been overlooked. By use of a personal microcomputer, the traditional methods were investigated thoroughly, the results being tested against existing tables and figures. The fitting of a lognormal distribution, including estimation of the additive constant, is discussed, and the calculation of Sichel's t estimator and its associated confidence limits is described in detail. Payability calculations for a lognormal distribution are also covered briefly. The advantages of personal computers, particularly speed and ease of use, are emphasized. This low-cost approach permits detailed investigation of some of the assumptions and approximations inherent in the established methods of calculation. Several disturbing discrepancies are revealed in various factors, and some generalized statements made by previous authors are found to be over-simplistic. Full details are given of acceptable approximations and computer algorithms, and concern is expressed over the possible loss of proven methods under the welter of new, sophisticated computer software.

This paper describes the development of large-scale thermal-plasma systems, which was motivated, in general, by the potential cost savings that could be achieved by their use as a replacement for the more conventional methods used in the generation of thermal energy. The anticipated cost savings arise not only from the use of plasma-generating devices but from the manner in which they have been interfaced with a furnace to process particular materials, mostly as fines. Thermal-plasma systems fall into two categories: non-transferred-arc and transferred-arc devices. In general, transferred-arc devices have been interfaced with open-bath furnaces in which melting or smelting processes carried out, while non-transferred-arc devices have normally been applied to shaft furnaces. Water-cooled transferred-arc devices are somewhat limited in power (about 5 MW) because of the relatively voltages (300 to 500 V) that can be attained in open-bath furnaces, where very long arcs are undesirable, and because only relatively low levels of current can be carried. Graphite electrodes can overcome the restriction current, and power levels of 30 to 50 MW seem feasible, even with one electrode, if direct current is used. Multiple water-cooled devices are capable of attaining similar power levels, but the capital costs are much higher. Costs due to electrode wear are lower for water-cooled systems, but expensive gases are needed for transferred-arc devices. Mintek conducted extensive pilot-plant work in which water-cooled devices were used initially but graphite electrodes were used subsequently to produce ferochromium from fines. Transferred-arc open-bath configurations were used. This work led to a decision by Middelburg Steel & Alloys (MS&A) to install a 16 MVA furnace of semindustrial scale to produce ferochromium aloys based on the ASEA d.c. arc furnace developed for the Elred process. Non-transferred-arc devices have atained reasonable scale-up to the 6 to8 MW power level, and high-voltage operation, which is inherent in such devices, has enabled lower currents to be used. Nevertheless, multiple systems are still necessary to accommodate large-scale applications, and this can be costly from a capital point of view. The cooling requirements are large, and can represent a considerable loss of electric energy. Shaft furnaces equipped with non-transferred-arc devices are suitable for the processing of materials that have volatile species, e.g. silica or manganese, or where the shaft is used to prereduce oxides that are amenable to gas-solid reactions. It is probably in the treatment of light and refractory metals that plasma technology will achieve its greatest development in the years to come. The energy requirements for the production of these metals are high, and very low oxygen potentials are necessary. These are factors that favour thermal plasma. Much developmental work is still needed in this interesting field. It should be remembered that electrically generated thermal energy is a unique temperature source that, in many instances, cannot be replaced technically or economically by the combustion of a fuel.

The time 06h30 in midwinter is a little early to set out on an excursion from Johannesburg. Yet this was the hour that members, many accompanied by their wives, started to assemble in the parking lot adjacent to the squash courts at the Wanderers Club, Illovo, for a visit to Premier Diamond Mine at Cullinan. All fifty were checked in and aboard the coach by 07hOO. Coffee and sandwiches, served en route by Doris Gardner and Pam Binstead, were most welcome. Computer control of flotation at the Ecstall concentrator By M. P. AMSDEN, C. CHAPMAN, and M. G. READING Ecstall Mining Limited, a subsidiary of Texas Gulf Sulphur Company, operates the Kidd Creek Mine, a 10000 tons per day base metal producer, near Timmins, Ontario. Two different types of ore are mined and milled: copper-zinc and silver-lead-zinc. At the highly automated Ecstall concentrator the ores are processed by selective flotation in three individual circuits. One of the most important metallurgical tools for process control is a sample system incorporating continuous on-stream X-ray analysis. Recently this system was automated further by the addition of computer control of reagents for two copper-zinc flotation circuits. The computer programs, utilizing optimum seeking methods and smelter contract terms, have increased copper recovery by 1,1 per cent, zinc recovery by 1,4 per cent, and have reduced reagent costs by 16 per cent. Although not expected, copper and zinc concentrate grades were improved slightly as well.

A review of some aspects of shaft design by G. W. HOLL, Pr. Eng., Associate of the Mine Managers Association of South Africa (Fellow)- and E. G. FAIRON, Pr. Eng., F.S.A.I.E.E., M.I. Cert. M.E.E., M.I.Mech. E., (Visitor) The reasons for the choice of vertical shafts in preference to inclined shafts of comparable capacity are set out, and the conclusion that the former are superior in virtually all circumstances is substantiated. The shapes of vertical shafts sunk during the past sixty years are recorded, and the shapes of those sunk during the past decade are analysed. From this analysis it is clear that circular and elliptical (and quasi-elliptical) shafts are the shafts of the future and that the rectangular shape will conceivably become obsolete. The determination of the size of shaft is discussed and it is forecast that shafts of a diameter of 13 metres and over will probably be sunk without difficulty in the years to come. The depth of the shaft is determined intrinsically by the Mines and Works Regulations applicable to factors pf safety of winding ropes and the design of the winding system. The Blair winder is the most suitable winder for hoisting rock, men, and material from a depth of, say, 3000 metres on an economic basis. Tertiary shafts will, therefore, be unnecessary in future deep-level mining projects at the limit of depth now envisaged. A few other factors relating to shaft design are described.

By 1984 Iscor's first direct-reduction plant will be operating at the Vanderbijlpark Works, and for the fin;t time the Corporation will have an alternative method to the blast furnace for producing iron from ore. The performance of Iscor's four-kiln plant, which will be the largest coal-based plant in the world producing sponge iron, will undoubtedly be watched with great interest by steelmakers throughout the world. Beneficiation of tin The Southeast Asia Tin Research and Development (SEATRAD) Centre is a regional oganization, formed by the Governments of Indonesia, Malaysia, and Thailand with assistance from the United Nations, to conduct, coordinate, and promote research and training in the various fields of tin production, including geology, prospecting, mining, mineral processing, and smelting.

The organization and mechanized colliery management of a large by G. C. THOMPSON, B.Sc. (Min. Eng.) (Witwatersrand), M.B.L. (Member), and P. G. HENDERSON, B.Sc. (Min. Eng.) (Pretoria), M.B.A. (Member). Usutu Collieries Limited, at present the largest single producer of coal in South Africa, supplies Cam den power station. and produces 435 000 tonnes per month by conventional mechanized methods from bord-and-pillar workings in three mines. The thickness of the seams averages 2 metres, and the depth below surface varies from 15 to 150 metres. Each mine depends to a different extent on certain common facilities and services. Two of the mines are located on the same coalfield, and their rationalization would possibly be advantageous. Production policy is one of productivity with flexibility. The double-loader system is widely used, and one section at each mine is worked on single shift. Pillar extraction is practised where possible. In addition to lubrication and inspections, planned maintenance of mining equipment consists of sub-assembly replacements and overhauls. Conveyor and tractor/trailer transport is used underground. but trolley-wire locomotive haulage is being considered. The organization is such that co-ordination is relatively difficult, and certain changes could possibly improve the functioning of the engineering and mining departments. Technical and management training is carried out. Long-term planning will make use of a computer programme and will involve the investigation of other mining methods. Five-year and twelve-month plans are prepared, the planning of coal quality being based on the view that the mine and the power station together constitute a system. Control information systems make use of a remote computer terminal located at the mine. An improved integrated system is being investigated.

In 2002 the commissioning of an ilmenite smelter on the North Coast of South Africa was extended by three months due to the failure and subsequent replacement of the magnesia-based refractory lining. The lining failed due to the hydration of magnesia caused by an unexpected source of water. The incident resulted in significant financial losses and a prolonged insurance claim which was settled in 2009. As magnesia-based refractories are used extensively in both ferrous and non-ferrous applications, the authors of the paper want to share the experience gained from this incident with others. The paper reviews the literature available on furnace start-up practices and explains the hydration of magnesia using available sources. The incident is studied in more detail, both technically and economically, and the costs incurred are quantified in terms of the cost of the original lining. The paper concludes with lessons learned and recommendations made for future work. The intention of the paper is to stimulate open debate regarding best practices in preheating of furnaces lined primarily with magnesia. Keywords Commissioning, hydration, start-up, magnesia.

An investigation of the slope stability of a pit and failures of spoil dumps, carried out at Silicon Smelters quartz mine, Pietersburg, South Africa, is described. The major geological feature of the mine is the intensely foliated schist in the footwall, with exceptionally Iow strengths upon extensive discontinuities, and the similarly unusual strength properties of the dumped schist spoil. The selection of slope angles for the pit is described, and a proposal for the stabilization of the failing spoil dump by segregated dumping is explained.
