A partial shaft pillar extraction project was embarked on at a mine in the West Wits mining region in South Africa. Prior to the extraction, a rock engineering assessment was conducted with the main objective being to establish which areas of the shaft pillar could be extracted without unduly affecting the stability of major infrastructure within the shaft pillar. Standard numerical modelling methods were used to conduct this assessment and several areas were identified for extraction. However, during the extraction process, it was found that the infrastructure was affected more than was originally predicted by linear elastic modelling. In addition to this, several large events resulted in far more large aftershocks than would normally be predicted. In order to gain an understanding of this phenomenon, seismic data was integrated with numerical modelling as follows: > The seismic data in the form of displacements was integrated in 3D space within the model to assess the effect of static stress changes associated with seismic activity > Data from large events was integrated onto specific structures, where displacements associated with large events were integrated onto the plane of structure in question. This paper describes the methodology and results obtained from each of the above processes and include insights into the mining process that were previously unfathomable using standard linear elastic numerical modelling. The way forward for this rock engineering assessment of partial shaft pillar extraction is also discussed.

"SynopsisThe physical properties of oxidative sintered pellets produced from typical South African UG2 ore are compared with the physical properties of pellets produced with conventional South African metallurgical-grade chromite ore (from the Lower Group 6 or the Middle Group 1 and 2 seams). A statistical evaluation of the cured (sintered) compressive strengths proved that pellets prepared from UG2 ore are likely to have the same, or better, compressive strength than pellets prepared from metallurgical-grade chromite ore. The cured abrasion strength of the UG2 pellets was also superior to that of the metallurgical-grade pellets. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) backscatter, secondary electron, and elemental X-ray mapping were used to determine the reasons for the general superior strength of the UG2 pellets. The case study UG2 ore also required 13 kWh/t less energy for milling to attain the required particle size distribution prior to pelletization, which can lead to substantial cost savings. Results presented in this paper can be utilized by ferrochromium (FeCr) producers to better quantify the advantages and disadvantages associated with the use of UG2 ore for FeCr production.IntroductionChromite, a mineral of the spinel group, is the only commercially viable source of virgin chromium units. Geologically, commercial chromite deposits in the world are found in three forms, i.e. alluvial-, podiform-, and stratiform-type deposits (Murthy et al., 2011; Cramer et al., 2004). Alluvial deposits were formed by weathering of chromite-bearing rock with the subsequent release of chromite and gravity concentration by flowing water. However, these deposits are relatively small and of comparatively minor commercial interest. Podiform-type chromite deposits usually occur as irregularly shaped pods or lenses, and their distribution within a mineralized zone is usually relatively erratic and unpredictable, making the exploration of these deposits difficult and costly (Cramer et al., 2004). Stratiform-type chromite deposits occur as parallel seams in large, layered igneous rock complexes with more regular layering and lateral continuity (Cramer et al., 2004). The largest example of a stratiformtype chromite deposit is the Bushveld Complex (BC) in South Africa, which holds an estimated three-quarters of the world’s viable chromite ore resources (Cramer et al., 2004).Several chromite seams exist in the BC. The seams of economic interest are the Lower Group 6 (LG6), the Middle Group 1 and 2 (MG1 and 2), and the Upper Group 2 (UG2) seams (Cramer et al., 2004). The LG and MG seams are specifically exploited for their chromium content, while the UG2 seam is mined primarily as a source of platinum group minerals (PGMs) (Xiao and Laplante 2004). Extraction of the PGMs from the UG2 ore usually involves the liberation of the sulphide by milling and subsequent recovery of the PGM concentrate through flotation (Xiao and Laplante, 2004). Chromite in the PGM concentrate is undesirable; therefore, PGM recovery circuits are specifically designed to ensure maximum rejection of the chromite to the tailings stream. However, the chromite in the PGM tailings can potentially serve as feedstock for ferrochrome (FeCr) production, after beneficiation to increase the chromium content."

The Mine Health and Safety Act No. 29 of 1996, as amended, embeds an occupational health and safety management system that facilitates communication between representatives of the state, capital, and labour. In underground mines, two communication loops between these role players serve to separate the production chain of command from the political tripartite relations. Worker-elected health and safety representatives are involved in both communication loops, but are severely constrained in escalating their occupational health and safety concerns to the legalpolitical level. This has a direct bearing on the exercise of the Right to Refuse Dangerous Work (RRDW). As previously reported, health and safety representatives were found to primarily consult their production supervisors in preference to their trade-union representatives. This follow-up article presents production supervisor perspectives on the RRDW. The study demonstrates how, for mineworkers, the two distinct communication subsystems constrain, rather than facilitate, implementation of the RRDW.

Rockbursting around underground excavations continues to be a core risk for many deep mining operations. Numerous advancements in mine design, preconditioning, monitoring, mining equipment, exclusion zones, and ground support have significantly lowered the risk to mine workers. As mining continues in deeper, more challenging environments, a multitiered approach to rockburst risk mitigation, starting with mine design, is required. Both the overall mine sequence, for example, avoiding converging mining fronts, and local design “stick handling” can play an important role in risk reduction. Rockburst case studies dating back to the late 1990s up until 2024 are used to highlight risk factors and risk mitigation (tactical and strategic). Examples from several deep hard rock mines are used, generally in high horizontal stress fields (k ratios 1.5 to 2), and strong brittle rock (> 200 MPa unconfined compressive strength). Mining induced stresses as well as high in situ stress due to depth are discussed. The context is Canadian mining, which typically has highly mechanised operations, large openings and equipment. Examples from a narrow vein mine and shaft sinking are also given because neither environment is simple to mechanise, highlighting the need for other risk mitigations. A “sieve” analysis based on mine incident reports is used to show how a multi-tiered risk management plan can lower exposure to violent ground failures. A few incidents still make their way through the “sieve,” indicating a need for further improvements. Thoughts on future/ current developments, and their strategic importance are given. Ground support is the last line of defence. The proliferation of multiple styles of yielding tendons and support systems has made many choices available to rock engineering professionals. Despite the increased availability of dynamic ground support components, there are still difficulties getting clean load transfer to bolts, determining support demand, monitoring loss of capacity over time/mining, and evaluating true system capacity. Virgin development in deep high stress brittle rock can result in high strainburst exposure prior to any stoping operations. The mining process must reduce worker exposure to unsupported rockmasses. Successful preconditioning in a shaft sinking operation, the use of high early strength shotcrete, and mechanised equipment are also discussed.

"The copper smelting industry faces increasingly stringent environmental regulations and must continue driving innovation to reduce energy usage in its production chain. With the coming of age of ‘bottom-blowing’ copper technologies in China over the last decade, much renewed attention has been brought to tuyere bath smelting for clean copper-making. Since bottom-blowing sonic injection was originally developed and implemented in steelmaking in the 1970s and lead smelting in the 1990s, the time seems appropriate to revisit the sonic injection concepts and dispel some myths. After reviewing the trends in the copper industry and providing a brief historical context of research and development related to sonic injection, the author presents a comparison of the main submerged tuyere bath smelting technologies, namely the Noranda Reactor (NR), the Teniente Converter (TC), and the Chinese Bottom-Blowing Smelting Furnace (SKS/BBS) for copper, and the Queneau-Schuhmann-Lurgi Reactor (QSL) for lead. The core of this article, however, consists of a brief description of the fundamental theories for sonic injection (jetting regime) and ‘sonic flow mapping’ to illustrate the relationship between the minimum tuyere back-pressure required to achieve sonic flow and the tuyere internal diameter. The article also offers a comparison between side- and bottom-blowing in jetting regime before concluding with the author’s vision of the new trend in submerged tuyere bath smelting. IntroductionIn the last decade, developments in the copper smelting industry have been driven by two key concepts: (1) increasing cleaner smelting capacity to meet the world’s growing copper demand, as illustrated in Figure 1, and (2) increasing process off-gas capture to comply with more stringent environmental regulations and abide by a corporate social responsibility ethic of a clean work environment (for smelter employees) and clean air (for families living around smelters). The copper smelting industry has also faced some major challenges in the last few decades, including (1) low treatment and refining charges (TC/RC or processing fees) impacting custom smelters, (2) lower concentrate quality and grades with higher levels of impurities (e.g. As and Hg), (3) higher processing and transportation costs due to the rising cost of energy, (4) restrictions in process intensification (tonnage oxygen usage) due to furnace integrity limits, and (5) scarcity of educated and trained personnel due to fewer metallurgists graduating from pyrometallurgical school programmes combined with a high retirement rate of skilled workers."

The development of a post-mining economy is generally framed as accessible and desirable and something that mining companies, consultants, and the government can, and should, plan for. It is indeed possible. Yet, most mining regions, other than the big metropolitan municipalities, find economic diversification after mining challenging, despite their grand plans, consultant reports, and company intentions. Their efforts blind them to other ideas that are often prerequisites to diversification. This paper highlights some economic and social misconceptions about economic diversification and explains where planning goes wrong. Mistakes typically stem from ignorance and misunderstandings. Planners and policy makers fail to grasp the essential requirements for economic diversification. They underestimate the structural constraints created by mining. They do not see how mine rehabilitation is linked to economic diversification. They generally do not understand the South African space economy or the nature of new economies. The paper also proposes a more careful consideration of those economic aspects that mining cities have control over, such as land use management and infrastructure. The paper further explains how understanding long-term dependencies can help prevent governance failures. The social disruption that accompanies mine decline and closure must be recognised and dealt with. The mines must plan for decline as a way to resuscitate the economy. It concludes with a framework for assessing and developing a post-mining economy.

"This paper aims to demonstrate how a systemic approach can be applied to the analysis of the causes of accidents in South African mines. The accident analysis framework used was developed previously by the authors from the combination of the Mark III version of the Swiss Cheese model, Incident Cause Analysis Method (ICAM), the Nertney Wheel model, and safety management principles. Data on 91 accidents occurring from 2010 to 2012 at the site of a platinum mine in South Africa were used to populate the newly developed framework. The results obtained show that while routine violations (45% of all accidents analysed) were the most common form of human error, problems in the physical environment of workers were the most common workplace factor (39.6% of all accidents analysed). Furthermore, inadequate leadership was found to be the most common systemic factor responsible for accidents (51.6% of all accidents analysed). Some workplace factors were more commonly associated with particular unsafe acts than others, and some systemic factors were more associated with particular workplace factors than others. The outcome of this study demonstrates that systemic factors, rather than human errors and violations, are the chief causes of accidents in the mining sector. IntroductionThe mining industry is a very important sector of the South African national economy. A major factor threatening the sustainability of this industry is mining accidents, which frequently result in injuries or deaths, destruction of property, and pollution of the environment. In the past, mining accidents have led to the shutdown and threat of shutdown of mines (Ryan, 2008; Mail and Guardian, 2011). The country stands the risk of incurring significant losses if the mining industry continues to experience shutdowns. In 2012, the mining sector accounted for R262.7 billion (equivalent to US$32.83 billion) representing 8.3% of GDP directly, on a nominal basis (Chamber of Mines of South Africa, 2013).Mining safety is a global concern and has attracted significant international attention. This has precipitated various studies into different aspects of mining. Unfortunately, human error has been blamed for the majority of these accidents. A study by the US Bureau of Mines found that human error is the cause of almost 85% of all accidents (Patterson and Shappell, 2008). In Australia, it is the cause of two out of every three occupational accidents (Patterson and Shappell, 2008). Various mining companies maintain that they run efficient systems, and hence the behavioural problems of workers are to blame for most accidents. An understanding of accident causality could be a major step in the quest to reduce accidents. Only with a good understanding of the accident process can effective remedies can be designed."

The difference in the magnetic properties of minerals is the basis for magnetic separation. All minerals can be generally classified as ferromagnetic (strongly magnetic), paramagnetic (weakly magnetic) or diamagnetic (non-magnetic). Magnetic separation can be conducted dry or wet. The majority of the applications of wet magnetic separation in the mining industry are based on the wet drum magnetic separator. The wet drum magnetic separator has been in use for over 50 years and its design is based on a rotating drum installed inside a tank. Inside the drum are stationary, permanent magnets arranged in an arc to provide the magnetic field. These magnets can be of the ceramic ferrite type providing a low intensity magnetic field or of the rare earth type providing a high intensity magnetic field.

"South African mining operations depend on the skilled professionals produced through the tertiary education sector. In geoscience courses at the University of the Witwatersrand, which lead into the mining sector, there has been a significant increase in student intake over the past 15 years. This increase has been characterized by a radical shift in demography: in classes where white male students once formed the majority, black female students are now in the majority. This demographic shift appears closely linked to policies addressing issues of social justice and transformation in post-apartheid South Africa. We document this change and consider the role played by employment equity legislation (as in the Mining Charter) and corporate social investment strategies in the mining industry, notably through bursaries offered to black female students. We also look at the changing needs of the industry, where the critical need for managerial skills, not just technical knowledge, is highlighted through data from surveys of past students and industry managers. Our findings indicate the need for a curriculum adjustment to meet these changing requirements, as well as more rigorous selection criteria for bursars than simply gender, race, and appropriate matric results. IntroductionThe South African economy has historically been linked to mining and the exploitation of mineral resources. South African mining operations are dependent on the professional labour that is produced through the tertiary education sector, with critical thinking, teamwork, and the art of negotiation having been identified as the crucial skills required for this industry (Sideropoulos, 2014). Over the past three decades the South African system of education has gone through a period of dysfunction that it is struggling to rectify (Maphai, 2014). This has impacted on the levels of academic preparedness of students applying for places in higher education. Concurrently, government and university policies have widened access to higher education in response to the need to address issues of social injustice and transformation related to South Africa’s history of apartheid. As a result, the number of students admitted to universities has increased dramatically. In the School of Geosciences at the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits), the increase in student numbers has been accompanied by a significant change in demographics: classrooms which in the past were dominated by white males have given way to classrooms in which black females are often in the majority. This demographic shift is related to legislation such as the Mineral and Petroleum Resources Development Act and the Broadbased Socio-Economic Empowerment Charter, developed to reshape the socio-economic and equity frameworks of the country (Botha and Cronje, 2015). Requirements aimed at transformation in terms of management, skills development, and employment equity, together with corporate social investment (CSI) requirements, have resulted in bursaries being made available to attract students from designated groups, which in turn has increased the number of black students, and notably black female students, taking courses in geosciences. However, due to the economic downturn, instability in the mining industry has recently resulted in the downsizing of some mines, with international investors pulling out of South Africa. This instability resulted in devastating strikes across all sectors of the mining industry (Stewart, 2013) and in Marikana, an important platinum mining area, the strike culminated in a deadly shoot-out between miners and police. The resulting tensions spilled over into the gold mining sector, resulting in further strike action, shaft closures, and retrenchments. These challenges have implications not only for the mining industry in South Africa, but for the tertiary education providers whose graduates would have been absorbed into the mine-related workforce."

The Soutpansberg Coalfield hosts South Africa's hard coking coal reserves. However, coals in this region are understudied compared to other coalfields in the country. This study characterizes the properties of fine-float fraction samples extracted from a wide diameter borehole core in the Makhado Project, Tshipise sub-basin, Soutpansberg coalfield. Conventional analyses were used to determine the coal quality, petrographic composition, mineralogy, geochemistry (including trace element and rare earth element composition), and free swelling index of samples from six coal horizons and three partings from the economic No.6 Seam. The coal samples are classified as medium rank bituminous C coals (0.88 %RoVmr, 0.92 %Rmax) and are highly vitrinitic in composition (97 vol% mineral matter free (mmf)). The samples show strong caking potential (FSI of 9). The total rare earth concentrations range between 570 and 3193 ppm in the ash samples. Preliminary analysis show all but two samples are promising sources of rare earth elements as the total concentrations exceeded the 1000 ppm cut-off grade. Further research is required to confirm these preliminary findings.

"When considered collectively, Mineral Resources and Mineral Reserves are arguably a key asset for any mining company. Mineral Reserves are the economically mineable portions of Mineral Resources. They therefore provide a good indication of the economic prospects in the short to medium term and associated non-financial impairments for mining companies, hence a focus on Mineral Reserves. An assessment of modifying factors for converting Mineral Resources to Mineral Reserves revealed that Mineral Reserves were most sensitive to long-term commodity prices, hence the focus on long-term commodity prices. The justification for selecting gold and platinum mines is that they collectively make a significant contribution to South Africa’s earnings from mining.The introduction of the South African Code for the Reporting of Exploration Results, Mineral Resources and Mineral Reserves (SAMREC Code) in 2000 informed the basis for analysing long-term commodity price assumptions for major South African gold and platinum mining companies between 2000 and 2016. The analysis revealed that the least number of non-financial impairments occurred when long-term commodity prices were within ±5% of spot prices. This finding suggests that this range is the ideal range for long-term commodity price assumptions to improve confidence in Mineral Reserve declarations and minimize impairments. Introduction The South African Code for the Reporting of Exploration Results, Mineral Resources and Mineral Reserves (SAMREC Code) defines a Mineral Resource as ‘a concentration or occurrence of solid material of economic interest in or on the Earth’s crust in such form, grade or quality and quantity that there are reasonable prospects for eventual economic extraction’ (SAMREC, 2016, p. 18). Mineral Resources are categorized according to increasing levels of geoscientific confidence or knowledge, from Inferred to Indicated and lastly, Measured categories. The SAMREC Code defines a Mineral Reserve as ‘the economically mineable part of a Measured and/or Indicated Mineral Resource’ (SAMREC, 2016, p. 25). In some of the other reporting codes such as the Australasian Code for Reporting of Exploration Results, Mineral Resources and Ore Reserves (the JORC Code), a Mineral Reserve is synonymous with an Ore Reserve. The conversion of Mineral Resources to Mineral Reserves involves applying modifying factors, which are non-resource considerations. The modifying factors used in the Mineral Reserve estimation process include mining, metallurgical, processing, infrastructure, economic, marketing, legal, environmental, social, and governmental factors. Each of these modifying factors consists of several components which require due consideration in the estimation of Mineral Reserves. Table I shows some of the components typically considered for each of the modifying factors."

The global emphasis on conserving energy resources has led to the adoption of hybrid power systems in vehicles. Optimally applied, hybrid systems can save up to 40% on fuel costs. To optimally manage a hybrid vehicle's energy flow it is necessary to know, in real time, all the energy requirements to complete a given route. The energy consumption depends mainly on the vehicle mass, speed profile, and route topography. Of these, the topographic profile is the one factor that is only route-dependent and not influenced by the vehicle or driving styles. The heading vs. distance profile is also an example of a route characteristic not influenced by the vehicle or driving style. In this study the topographic and heading profiles are used to identify routes, and are easily measured by means of digital barometric pressure and compass sensors. Correlations between the current route and previously travelled/stored routes are performed based on their topographic and heading profiles in a point-by-point manner. Above-ground tests were first performed using a road vehicle and six routes to evaluate the system. The system consistently and correctly identified a 20 km route within the first 4 km. It also proved to function correctly in underground tests through the implementation of an instrumented hand-held surveyor's wheel. This system finds direct practical application in optimizing the energy management of an underground hybrid locomotive used by the mining industry in South Africa, but can also be of benefit in applications where route identification is required and using GPS is not feasible.

A. W. S. Schumann The first reason for todays success lies in the very high standard which was set by our speakers today and I think that we owe a very special vote of thanks to Messrs P. M. C. Wilson, A. A. Oakes, M. J. Deats, A. C. Coetzee, R. E. Burnton and J. G. Ferguson. This, however, cannot account for the fact that there was a tremendous response even before anyone knew who was going to speak or what they were going to speak about. I suggest that the response was enthusiastic because people expected a more informal gathering with a greater opportunity for feedback, for an exchange of views and for questions and answers. The very popularity of the idea has defeated its own ends to some extent. This gathering is too big and many people must have been left with questions unanswered. Possibly one should arrange for a number of meeting places-there are many in the Chamber and the surrounding mining houses-and then have separate meetings in the morning with joint reporting session in the afternoon. Alternatively, we could have a symposium after the colloquium, using Webster's definition of a symposium as as 'a drinking party of merry fellows'. We all know that it is easy to discuss mining into the small hours. Obviously one cannot summarise todays papers and discussions, but I would like to make a few comments on technical matters and after that I would like to speak for a moment about what I see as major trends or tendencies which arise from discussions of this nature. Regarding the question of placing a village on a mine or away from a mine, I would mention that there is quite a body of literature on the adverse sociological effects on the development of children in any community in which the great majority of parents share the same occupation. It is something to be avoided if possible. We discussed the concept of the moving stockpile. If this is proved to be successful, it could save a considerable amount of money for Escom who could then avoid the construction of very large and costly staithes which are now regarded as parts of power stations. One does not see why both a moving stockpile and a staith should be necessary. By the way, speaking of Escom, I see that Mr Bob Scott is here; he has stopped pulling my leg by saying that we sell stone to Escom; perhaps someone has told him that if this is true, it must be the cheapest stone you can buy in this country. My next point relates to the use of epidiascope. It struck me again that this instrument which provides a visual image to accompany your message, can be very effective if it is properly used. These papers speak of a great deal of hard work which went into their preparation, and one really feels that the authors should have taken a few minutes more to prepare their drawings specifically for the epidiascope. There should be nothing on the drawing which is not necessary to illustrate a particular point and there should be nothing on the drawing which is not visible from the back of the hall. It is commonly accepted that three types of aquifers exist in the Bushveld Complex: (a) alluvial aquifers in areas of river courses, (b) weathered bedrock aquifer formed by the in-situ weathering of the bedrocks, (c) fractured aquifers underlying the weathered aquifers controlled by the regional and local fracturing of the crystalline rocks. Hydrogeological studies conducted in the Critical Zone of the Bushveld Complex in the western limb show that the UG2 pyroxenite layer is of a particular interest and has a unique aquifer property. It yields much of the groundwater inflow into some mines and can be classified as the most important aquifer in the vicinity of the mining zone. The UG2 pyroxenite aquifer is restricted to the dipping UG2 pyroxenite unit. The unit weathers more intensely than the surrounding norites and anorthosites and is characterized by deeper weathering horizons (two to three times deeper than the surrounding rocks). For much of the UG2 mining area between depths of 35 ? 80 m, stoping of the UG2 takes place approximately 5 ? 7 m below the UG2 pyroxenite aquifer, and usually there is no groundwater inflow into the mine workings. However, unsealed deep exploration boreholes intersecting the UG2 pyroxenite and reaching underground mine workings, or mine roofbolts penetrating the weathered pyroxenite aquifer from underneath, can result in significant groundwater inflows into the underground workings. The reason as to why the UG2 pyroxenite weathers more than the norites and anorthosites has not been fully studied but is suspected to be due to the bedding planes of the unit and mineralogical composition of the particular pyroxenes forming the unit, which result in preferential physical and chemical weathering under atmospheric conditions. The weathered pyroxenes form sand-sized, rounded grains with improved effective porosity and permeability suitable for the storage and passage of groundwater. The orientation of the pyroxenite aquifer can easily be determined as it dips with the Bushveld layered strata. No-flow boundaries can be assumed on the hanging- and footwall of the pyroxenite aquifer and the flow rates can be estimated using 2-dimentional analytical equations. However, this must be confirmed with strong conceptual models since the existence of a fracture network connecting the pyroxenite aquifer with the overlying weathered and/or underling fractured aquifers can complicate the system, lowering the accuracy of analytical models and necessitating the utilization of numerical models.

The Mineral Density Separator (MDS) was developed by Mintek to predict mineral separation in a plant, evaluate efficiencies and develop scale-up parameters. This study investigated the influence of particle size on the results of the MDS, the misplacement of material in the MDS and the possibility of replacing heavy liquid float and sink analyses of coal with MDS analyses. Six tests were done with coal of different size ranges. Each MDS layer was subjected to a float-sink analysis whereafter each float fraction was screened to determine the particle size distribution. The results indicated that MDS results represent float-sink analyses when compared to an ash curve. There is some misplacement in the different MDS layers, but this does not seem to influence the results negatively. Lightning has been observed in dust clouds following open-pit blasting. It is proposed that the occurrence of this phenomenon is related to the physical composition and characterization of the mineral fines that comprise the bulk of the dust cloud. Silicate minerals, which are susceptible to fine fracturing during blasting, generate the initial charge. This is further enhanced by collisions and friction during the turbulent upcast in the post-blast dust cloud. Varying size fractions result in different rates at which these particles drop out of suspension and create a secondary temperature gradient. This results in the creation of two charged zones and increases the potential of developing a discharge in the form of lightning. The ideal prevailing meteorological conditions need to be windless to minimize the effect of particle dissipation and have sufficient moisture toenhance the potential of generating lightning.

"The sizing, designing, and costing of copper electrowinning circuits requires an in-depth understanding of the fundamental relationships between circuit parameters and the practical operation requirements. The aim of this investigation was to optimize total copper electrowinning project cost by mapping the operating limits of key mechanical equipment. The model was compiled by mapping various cellhouse layouts in terms of number of cathodes per cell, crane productivity, stripping machine productivity, and rectifier–transformer (rectiformer) sizing using data tables for sensitivity analysis. These parameters were then collated and evaluated on a cost by size basis. The model provides an optimum band of operation for cellhouse productivity and project capital cost for a typical range of production throughputs, from 10 kt/a to 200 kt/a cathode copper. The information may be used as a high-level selection guide to assist with identifying a costeffective copper electrowinning circuit design for a specific production rate. The data was validated and compared with existing copper electrowinning cellhouses around the world that typically install no more than 84 cathodes per cell. Statistics is essentially a study of variability, the use of some suitable mathematical model representative of such variability, and the application of this inferred pattern of behaviour to practical problems. Probability theory is the mathematical structure devised for providing models for chance happenings. Perhaps the simplest example of a chance happening is the result obtained in tossing a coin. Although the result of a single toss can never be predicted with certainty, there is no reason why in repeated tosses the expectancy of heads and tails should not be equal. In such a case the outcomes of the experiment are said to be equally likely, so that the probability of obtaining heads (or tails) is 1 in 2, that is, 0,5. This simple probability .model refers to a 'mathematical' or 'unbiased' coin. Whether such probabilities are meaningful for actual coins tossed in any particular way is a matter for experience to determine. Probability models have also provided the basis for representing observed variability in cases where the actual under- lying probabilities are only partly known or defy analysis. A typical example of the latter case is the variability observed in the values obtained from gold or other ore samples. The interacting natural forces which gave rise to this variability are obviously very complex and are unlikely ever to be unravelled completely. In spite of this, probability theory and the more recent geostatistical theories have provided us with models which can represent this variability on a reasonable basis. Applied statistics and geostatistics must therefore never be accepted as exact mathematical sciences. Furthermore, a basic and essential concept is that in the type of applications covered in these notes, no model must ever be accepted as necessarily the final and exact answer to the problem; thus, any model must prove and continue to prove its appropriateness in practice, preferably by follow-up comparisons.

My opportunity to serve as President of the prestigious Southern African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy (SAIMM) was made possible by an Anglo American scholarship 39 years ago—a pivotal moment that set me on a career path spanning various roles and start-up ventures in the mining industry. Over the past decade, I have been privileged to broaden my experience by consulting across diverse industries globally. This exposure revealed something profound: what I had previously considered mining-specific challenges are, in fact, universal across many sectors. At its core, a mining operation is a complex system of interconnected activities—from exploration through mining operations like drill and blast, load and haul, to beneficiation, and outbound logistics. My cross-industry work has clearly shown that diverse sectors, such as chocolate manufacturing, tissue paper production, toilet paper converting facilities, labgrown diamonds, or high-tech equipment lifecycle management, all rely on value streams of interconnected activities to transform products. The objective is to maximise throughput while effectively managing performance variability. The primary difference lies solely in the specific technical expertise required for each industry, such as chemical, mining, processing, or metallurgical engineering. Across all these industries, I have observed a consistent pattern, that is, performance is primarily driven by individual efforts, where people react and work diligently as situations unfold in real-time. General managers and their teams often operate tactically, focusing on explaining yesterday’s poor performance rather than proactively setting up operations for success. This often resembles an ‘‘under-7s soccer match’’, with everyone chasing the ball. The common response to issues is to add more ad hoc meetings. This effort-driven organisational behaviour persists regardless of whether operations are greenfield digital manufacturing facilities, advanced digital mines with advanced process control, or operations run on paper and Excel spreadsheets for data acquisition. Paradoxically, more real-time data can lead to increased data noise, greater indecision, and sometimes, lower performance. Despite value streams often operating significantly below capacity, organisations continue to invest heavily in additional equipment or in ‘‘glossy brochure promises’’ of Industry 4.0 digital technology and real-time data solutions, which frequently fail to deliver value. This leads to a critical question: Have we underinvested in our most valuable resource— people? Even Tesla faced this challenge with their underperforming fully automated Model X facility. We must shift our focus to designing the ecosystem, or operating model, of our organisations. This extends beyond the traditional triad of people, process, and technology, and moves beyond simplistic views of change management. Artificial Intelligence (AI) has the potential to add significant value, but it also introduces another layer of complexity into designing the organisation of the future. My full presidential address below at the SAIMM AGM discussed the symptoms of an effort-driven organisation and covered the fundamental building blocks and requirements of an operating model, including recommendations on implementing a people-centric approach.

Admittedly, some debates are as old as the SAMREC Code itself and have been ‘parked’ as no consensus could be reached by members of the SAMREC Working Group.Some of the more critical issues currently under examination are the definition of Competent Person and the potential registration of Competent Persons, the current re-write of the Code, and the introduction of reporting of Exploration Results, Mineral Resources, and Mineral Reserves on an ‘If not – why not’ basis, noncompliance with the Code and discipline, the role of the Johannesburg Stock Exchange Readers Panel, and the valuation of mineral assets based on scoping studies.IntroductionThis paper is intended as a personal memoir of recent thoughts and debate around the South African Code for the Reporting of Exploration Results, Mineral Resources and Mineral Reserves (the SAMREC Code) (2009) (‘the Code’). Current practices in the compilation and reporting of Exploration Results, Mineral Resources, and Mineral Reserves are often deficient in adhering to the Code and a conscious effort must be made by the mining sector to improve the standard of public reporting, in particular Competent Person Reports (CPRs) and Public Reports issued by listed mineral exploration and mining companies."
