This paper investigates the effect of chemical and physical operational parameters on the reverse flotation of Timbopeba itabirite iron ore in a pilot-scale pneumatic flotation cell. Operational parameters include collector and depressant dosages, feed rate, superficial gas velocity and solids concentration. Results show that increasing collector dosage results in an increase in quartz recovery, particularly for the coarser quartz where recovery increases by nearly 30%. Increasing depressant dosage results in a decrease in both quartz recovery and hematite loss, for the coarser hematite particles. Increasing the feed rate has no effect on quartz recovery or hematite loss, suggesting that the pneumatic flotation cell is not residence time constrained. Increasing the superficial gas velocity results in an increase in quartz recovery to an optimum at a Jg of around 0.6 cm/s after which it decreases significantly, particularly for the coarser particles where recovery decreases by as much as 50%. Decreasing the solids concentration does not affect quartz recovery but results in significant decreases in hematite loss. Here, fine and coarse hematite loss decreases from around 25% to 12% and 10% to 2% respectively. Superficial gas velocity and solids concentration are operating parameters which have the largest effect on the flotation performance of the pneumatic flotation cell. Results suggest that this flotation cell should be operated at relatively low superficial gas velocities and solids concentrations. However, these are pilot-scale findings and would need to be tested at an industrial-scale where different operating conditions may be optimal. Excavations in rock are commonly supported with wire mesh, shotcrete, wire mesh and shotcrete in combination, and shotcrete reinforced with various types of fibres. Wire rope lacing and various types of straps are additional forms of support installed over the above types, to cope with severe conditions. These support systems are very important items of ?membrane? rock support. With the recent development of several types of thin sprayed linings, the importance of membrane support is likely to increase in the future. In this paper, a wide range of mechanisms of membrane behaviour and mechanisms of loading of membranes, is described. The concepts of membrane components, which are single membranes that may be used on their own as rock support, and membrane systems, which are combinations of more than one membrane component, are introduced. Different situations have different requirements of membrane support, and differences between civil engineering and mining requirements are highlighted. With the different basic requirements in these two areas, the requirements of rock support are correspondingly different. A thorough understanding of the mechanisms of behaviour of the different types of membranes, and the different mechanisms by which the membranes are loaded, is essential before a selection of appropriate support can be made, before appropriate design methods and calculations can be determined, and before appropriate performance test methods for membranes can be defined. The material in this paper contributes towards the understanding of membrane support behaviour.

High Pressure Grinding Rolls (HPGR) are mostly used prior to pelletising processes to increase the specific surface area (SSA) of iron ore concentrate. For expressing SSA, the Blaine index is utilised as one of the most important dimensional properties of iron ore pellet feed. ISO 21283 is a standard test method that explains the manual of Blaine air-permeability apparatus for determination of this parameter. In this standard, the disaggregation method is based on passing the minus of 1 mm samples from the 0.150 mm sieve. The disaggregation process has an effective role on the results of Blaine airpermeability test especially for regrinding HPGR products. In this research, firstly the Blaine index of samples was measured without disaggregation. Following this, disaggregation was done by passing the minus of 1 mm samples through three sieves with different dimensions, 0.150, 0.090 and 0.045 mm, separately, and the Blaine index was calculated for each one. Finally, lab-mill with rubber balls, called Jar mill, was investigated as another option. Screen analysis and image analysis with SEM were performed to evaluate the effects of the sample's disaggregation on the size distribution and agglomeration of samples. The results showed that the disaggregation method with sieve size 0.150 mm, according to ISO 21283, was not applicable for HPGR products because the particles were still stuck together. In addition, the disaggregation method with the sieve size 0.045 mm or with Jar mill offered reasonable results. Paper written on project work carried out in partial fulfilment of BSc Engineering (Mining) The aim of this project is to determine whether certain pillars occurring within the no. 1 shaft and no. 2 sub-shaft ground are feasible for extraction. The extraction of these pillars is essential in prolonging the life of Kloof Main Shaft as its VCR resource becomes depleted. Extraction of these pillars will require a combination of designs and factors, with rock mechanics and ventilation being the main considerations. Primarily for the pillar extraction, an initial production target of150 kg gold, mine able in one year from commencement of ?opening up? was set. The planned target has been exceeded and the feasible pillars identified are expected to yield an additional 1 390 kg of gold to the shaft?s production profile. However, not all the required ventilation designs have been completed to date, the reason being that at the time of the project, many of the pillar areas were inaccessible and thus ventilation conditions are unknown. This project is therefore an ongoing process and will require further design once all targeted pillar areas have been opened up. A preliminary costing analysis of the pillar mining was performed and it was found that all targeted pillars with the exception of 38?61 pillar are profitable.

The compressive strength of rock (sc) has an important effect on design of structures in rock engineering. Compressive strength can be determined in the laboratory using the uniaxial compressive strength (UCS) test. Some other index tests, such as the point load test, are also used, particularly when suitable samples for UCS are not available. The quantification of rock texture has introduced a new method in rock engineering for estimating the mechanical and physical properties of rock materials from microscopic investigations. The aim of this study is to quantify rock texture to estimate rock strength from the texture coefficient (TC), which is determined from a statistical assessment of thin section images. Rock texture is quantified by twelve different images from a single thin section to increase the reliability of texture analysis. A data-set is prepared to investigate correlations between TC and sc. The statistical correlations are computed after classifying of the rock samples based on their lithology as well as grain features. Equations derived based on the results of this study are used to predict the approximate value of compressive strength from the texture coefficient. This method is particularly useful for preliminary studies in rock engineering projects prior to detailed site investigation.

The main challenges in most low grade iron ore deposits are finding the optimum flowsheet for beneficiation to achieve a final concentrate from both technical and economic viewpoints. Dry preconcentration techniques are being used to assist in reducing the amount of ROM feed to the plant. In this paper the benefits of utilising a dry cobbing magnetic separation technique for upgrading the product of HPGR in a closed circuit with dry screen 4 and 1.4 mm by performing a pilot scale test work was investigated. The experimental test work was done on two sample types of Yogi BIF magnetite iron ore located in Western Australia. Prior to magnetic separation studies, detailed characterisation of the feed materials including physical, chemical, mineralogical and magnetic properties were carried out. Furthermore, the effects of process parameters: drum rotation speed (1.5, 2.5 and 3.5 m/s), magnetic field intensity (1100 and 3800 gauss) and feed size (minus 4 and 1.4 mm) were investigated. The results revealed that sample type1 with 33.90% Fe could be upgraded to 41.51% Fe by using a stage of 1100 gauss dry magnetic separator with 69.12% weight recovery and 84.36% Fe recovery at a size of 4 mm. Also for sample type2, it is possible to increase Fe grade from 29.84% to above 36.68% with 75.58% weight recovery and 90.32% Fe recovery by applying one stage of 1100 gauss dry magnetic separator to a 4 mm size sample. Looking for an idyllic paradise that has investment and business potential as spectacular as the stunning views of mountains, the rich Ganesh Himal zinc-lead deposit exposed between 4,050 m and 5,000 m is the answer. Arising from the sea floor in a span of 55 million years, the enchanting Himalayas had remained one of the most potent factors influencing the Asian region. The challenges of the mighty Himalayas notwithstanding, it continues to provide opportunities for the humankind in optimum usage of the natural resources and sustainable development. Optimal management of natural resources in mountain areas through decision support tools offered by remote sensing will go a long way in realization of the Ganesh Himal Zinc-Lead Project. The authors have a real life endeavor spanning over 37 years in developing a mining industry in a mountainous region of Nepal and an attempt to integrate with the development of other natural attributes of the region. With rapid acceleration of science and technology, humankind has acquired power to transform his environment countless ways and on an unprecedented scale. While mineral resources are the pillars on which we have built industry and infrastructure, industrial countries in the North have been in the forefront of technological advancements, the developed countries of the South have been at the receiving end of exploitation of mineral resources worldwide. A relationship with natural environment, re-crafted by the civilizing impulse, to meet human demands are upcoming challenges for management of natural resource in sustainable manner for a livable world.

Occupational health and safety is regulated by statute and common law. South Africa has, like many other countries, legislated extensively on occupational health and safety. Despite the body of legislation, the common law continues to play an important role as far as it concerns contractual, delictual and criminal liability. Two major Acts regulate occupational health and safety viz. the Occupational Health and Safety Act, No. 85 of 1993 (?OHASA?) and the Mine Health and Safety Act, No. 29 of 1996 (?MHSA?). The MHSA applies to mines and works as defined and related aspects. OHASA applies to other industries but does not apply to employers and workplaces to which the MHSA and certain matters covered by the Merchant Shipping Act, No. 57 of 1951 apply. See section 1(3) of OHASA. 2 The employer?s health and safety obligations in terms of the MHSA 2.1 Section 2(1) of the MHSA provides amongst others, as follows: ?The employer of every mine that is being worked must: (a) ensure, as far as reasonably practicable, that the mine is designed, constructed and equipped: (i) to provide conditions for safe operation and a healthy working environment (ii) ... (b) ensure, as far as reasonably practicable, that the mine is commissioned, operated, maintained and decommissioned in such away that employees can perform their work without endangering the health and safety of themselves or of any other person?.

Stope support systems, typically consisting of props and packs, are used extensively in the gold and platinum mining industry to stabilize the rock mass in the excavation vicinity and to reduce the hazard associated with rockfalls and rockbursts. The design of stope support systems was historically based predominantly on past experience and practices, and cost considerations. The recent development of a new and improved support design methodology, has led to the potential for significant increases in worker safety and support cost savings. This paper reviews some of the fundamental rock mass and support criteria that form the basis of the improved support design methodology. The considered design criteria are the height of potential fall; quasi-static stope closure rates; dynamic stope closure rates; compressive hangingwall stresses; discontinuity spacing, orientation and interface properties; effect of support length (stoping width); effect of compression rate; consistency of support performance; a real coverage; support spacing; and zone of support influence. The proposed support design methodology combines both the zone of influence and key block stability theories, resulting in optimized support systems for rockfall and rockburst conditions. The site-specific methodology consists of two stages: (i) a tributary area analysis, and (ii) a zone of support influence and a stability analysis, considering hangingwall failure due to buckling, shear and block rotation, which gives maximum safe spacing of individual support units. The methodology is suitable for designing support systems for both blocky hangingwalls and hangingwalls fragmented by face-parallel extension and shear fractures.

Keywords: MgO-MgR2O3 refractory, SO2-containing gases, chemical attack The reaction mechanisms occurring when MgO-MgR2O3 refractories are exposed to SO2-containing gas atmospheres were examined. The study examined the characteristic structures of magnesite-chrome, chrome-magnesite and magnesite refractories exposed to SO2-O2 gas mixture at temperatures of 700°C to 1350°C. The phase characterization was conducted with scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and powder X-ray diffractometry (XRD). The results show that the physical characteristics of the refractory matrix along the grain boundaries are important refractory features during chemical attack from SO2-containing gas. Upon heating in SO2-containing gas, the changes in phase-chemical compositions and accompanying grain growth causes loosening of the structure and the pore volume promotes gas diffusion. The chemical reactions that occur form stable sulfate compounds identified as MgSO4, CaSO4 and CaMg3(SO4)4, and lead to disintegration of various phase structures and consequently erosion of the refractory. In conclusion, the reaction mechanisms in MgO-MgR2O3 refractories exposed to SO2-containing gases progress through a combination of structural disintegration and chemical attack.

The estimation of the spatial variation of the b-value of the Gutenberg- Richter relationship is important for both the general interpretation of the mechanism of rock mass response and seismic hazard assessment. The interpretation of b-value as a parameter of rock mass response is discussed in this paper. The methods applied to evaluate the spatial variation of b-value and the algorithm for obtaining the magnitude of completeness and b-value for subsets of data are presented with some verification analyses. The algorithms presented enable the automation of a spatial evaluation of b-value.

The Oyu Tolgoi porphyry gold and copper project is located in the south Gobi region of Mongolia. The Ivanhoe Mines project has the potential to become a long-life copper and gold producer that could rank among the largest in the world. There are five deposits which cover a strike length in excess of 6.5 km, from south to north they are named South Oyu, Southwest Oyu, Central Oyu, Hugo South and Hugo North. The first three, collectively known as the Southern Oyu deposits, are planned to be mined by open pits, whilst extraction of the deeper Hugo deposits is planned using block caving techniques. The pits will have diameters of approximately 1000m and a maximum depth of 550m. The geological environment consists of a sequence of porphyritic augite basalt, dacitic tuffs and sedimentary rocks that have been intruded by several generations of porphyritic quartz monzodiorite and numerous post mineralization dykes. Several major faults cut through the southern deposits juxtaposing the relative position of the stratigraphy. The geotechnical investigation for the Oyu Tolgoi Open Pits was conducted in three distinct phases of increasing complexity: scoping study; advanced scoping study and feasibility study. Each phase consisted of data collection, interpretation and analysis designed to progressively develop 3D geotechnical domaining for the empirical, structural and numerical evaluations. The development of the geotechnical design parameters for these green fields open pits posed many technical challenges, brought about by the conditions associated with a lithologically and structurally complex environment. The design work focused on the optimization of the pit geometry to conform to equipment selection and blasting characteristics. Limiting bench stack heights were derived from the influence of major structures. The overall slope angles in each pit sector were developed around the requirement for haulage ramps and geotechnical berms. This paper describes each of these aspects and the methodology used to address the integration of the geotechnical characteristics with the mining environment.

After obtaining a BSc Eng at the University of the Witwatersrand in 1972, he returned to Gold Fields. Mr P D K Robinson was born in Zimbabwe, and was educated at Dale College in Kingwilliamstown, matriculating in 1952. He holds a Mine Surveyor's Certificate obtained in 1961) and a Mine Manager's Certificate (obtained in 1966), as well as an EDP from the University of the Witwatersrand.

A two-dimensional numerical scheme for the simulation of the plastic stress-strain properties of rock, and the various components of rock reinforcement and shotcrete, was used to rigorously determine the characteristics of tunnel support under squeezing conditions. D-shaped tunnels varying in size from 2,8 to 6,5 m in height and width were considered. The four main mining stages in the BAS block cave on Premier Mine were simulated as alternative sets of field stresses. The rock reinforcement comprised 1,8 m long fully grouted rockbolts and 6,0 m long fully grouted cable anchors at various spacings, and of various tensile and bond strengths. Various thicknesses of shotcrete and footwall support configurations were also considered. It was found that shotcrete and rock reinforcement, owing to inherent differences in stiffness, do not function in unison. As monolithic application, shotcrete has an overriding avidity for the imposed loading and destructs itself unless of extraordinary thickness. Under squeezing conditions, it accordingly supports the excavation surface while the rock reinforcement contains on-going convergence. The loads in the various support components can be determined only by simulation of the shotcrete as a stress-relieved medium to represent its broken condition in the field. The loads in the rock reinforcement vary around a tunnel and are the largest in the sidewalls. The loads increase with an increase in tunnel dimensions, the increase in load in the sidewall due to an increase in height being larger than that in the hanging- and footwalls due to an increase in width. Depending on the strength of the rock, the loads in the rock reinforcement become prohibitively large beyond a certain size of tunnel. The reinforcement of footwall rock can be omitted without adversely affecting that in other walls, provided the tensile and bond strengths of the reinforcement are not limited. The resulting footwall heave may, however, result in undermining of the reinforcement in the adjoining walls. A relative depth of anchor of 1,37 provides adequate bond strength in the larger sizes of tunnel, whereas, in smaller tunnels, anchor length is determined by the allowable convergence. The lack of fun column grouting adversely affects the efficiency of rock reinforcement to a major extent. The loads in rock reinforcement are very sensitive to the strength of the rock. Owing to a lack in refinement and calculational rigour, empirical classification systems are an inappropriate means for the design of tunnel support in squeezing conditions and, as a result, grossly unclear-estimate the support requirements.

To date developments in the simulation of carbon-in-pulp (CIP) adsorption circuits have focused primarily on the modeling of adsorption. This series of three papers describes a development in a direction that has received less attention, i.e. the need for a detailed description of the movement of carbon and slurry in continuous CIP and carbon-in-leach (CIL) plants. A new simulator has been developed based on the population-balance approach for modeling the movement of carbon and slurry. Existing adsorption and leaching models are evaluated in this paper in order to establish which are appropriate for use in the new simulator. The details of the simulator are given in Part 2 of this series.
