The application of kriging in assessing the area rainfall in a weather modification experiment is complicated by the presence of many zero rainfall recordings on a given day, and the fact that the variograms seem to be quite different for the rainfall on different days. Indicator variograms are shown to be directly related to two sets of conditional probabilities. Probability kriging is used in estimating the probability of rainfall amounts above any cutoff at any point

Following a short review of selected literature, a back analysis of stress measurements of stress regeneration in a closed mini-longwall is shown. The agreement is good, lending confidence to the parameters used in the proposed numerical model. Foundation yielding was modelled in the absence of total stope closure. A ?Prandtl? wedge was formed, coinciding with the yield point of the pillar/foundation system. Some theoretical work is used as a starting point for the formulation of a new design methodology for strike or dip stabilizing pillar/foundation systems in deep level goldmines. The existing guideline for the stability of foundations (APS< 2.5UCS) is critically examined. Finally, the advantages of the new approach, and the work required to substantiate the proposed new design methodology, are outlined.

Performance measurements of large-diameter circular saws were conducted on eight different carbonate rocks in marble factories located in some areas of Turkey. Rock samples were collected from these factories for laboratory tests. Uniaxial compressive strength, tensile strength and impact strength were determined in the laboratory. The brittleness of B3 (the ratio of compressive strength minus tensile strength to compressive strength plus tensile strength), the brittleness of B5 (the product of percentage fines in the impact strength test and compressive strength) and the brittleness of B8 (half of the product of compressive strength and tensile strength) were calculated from the test results. Hourly slab productions were correlated with brittleness indexes. It was concluded that sawability of carbonate rocks can best be predicted from the brittleness of B8.

Dual energy X-ray transmission (DE-XRT) sorting is a recent development in the range of sensor-based sorting technologies available today. DE-XRT is particularly suitable for dry coarse coal beneficiation in the size range -120 mm +12 mm. In this paper, we describe the technology and show the results of a number of test runs conducted on different types of coal from the USA and South Africa. The results have shown that DE-XRT is an effective technology not only for deshaling of coal and removing pyritic sulphur but also for separating coal and torbanite. The use of dry deshaling methods will be more important as water availability becomes a greater concern. DE-XRT is one such technology which will be incorporated in future dry coal processing plants.

Fragmentation analysis is an essential part of the optimization process in any mining operation. The costs of loading, hauling, and crushing the rock are strongly influenced by the size distribution of the blasted rock. Several direct and indirect methods are used to analyse or predict fragmentation, but none is entirely applicable to fragmentation assessment in sublevel caving mines, mainly because of the limitations imposed by the underground environment and the lack of all the required data to adequately describe the rock mass. Over the past few years, measurement while drilling (MWD) data has emerged as a potential tool to provide more information about the in-situ rock mass. This research investigated if MWD can be used to predict rock fragmentation in sublevel caving. The MWD data obtained from a sublevel caving mine in northern Sweden were used to find the relationship between rock fragmentation and the nature of the rock mass. The loading operation of the mine was filmed for more than 12 months to capture images of loaded load-haul-dump (LHD) buckets. The blasted material in those buckets was classified into four categories based on the median particle size (X50). The results showed a stronger correlation for fine and medium fragmented material with rock type (MWD data) than coarser material. The paper presents a model for prediction of fragmentation, which concludes that it is possible to use MWD data for fragmentation prediction.

Fine particle beneficiation plays an ever-increasing role in mineral processing plants and it seems that technology can’t keep up with the challenges involved in the treating of these fines. The REFLUX™ classifier has proven itself able to treat high tonnages of fine material, especially in the coal industry. There are various fine ore applications that can benefit from such a process, yet laboratory and pilot-scale tests on many of these ores show poor efficiencies and recoveries. A better understanding of the design, operation and mechanisms of the REFLUX™ classifier is required to determine if and how it fits into these applications. The mechanisms in gravity separators are very complex due to the complex hydrodynamics, and the REFLUX™ classifier is no exception. The mechanisms of these systems are usually described through theoretical single particle-models that are hard to verify through analysing the feeds and products of these processes. To verify these models the movement of individual particles must be measured, which is not an easy task. In this paper the separation mechanisms in the incline channels of the REFLUX™ classifier were investigated with high-speed videography. A small lab scale model of the incline channel was constructed for this purpose. It was possible to capture and track the trajectories of particles under certain conditions and match these trajectories with theoretical models. Job evaluation and the changing wage pattern by D. L. VAN COLLER, B.A.(Cape Town), M.A., B.Litt.{Oxon.) (Visitor) This paper sets out to show how changing forces are affecting the techniques that have been used in the evaluation of Black jobs on gold mines in the Anglo American Group since the introduction of job evaluation in 1961. Initially, job evaluation was essentially a management tool designed to differentiate jobs in a limited skill spectrum and thereby permit the establishment of a &apos;many stepped&apos; job ladder for Black employees to climb. With the changing wage pattern, job evaluation is becoming an industrialrelations tool aimed at recognizing the skill and effort contributed by the worker so that the pay relationships between jobs are seen to be equitable by the employees.

The dramatic strengthening of the rand against the dollar as well as a decline in quantity and quality of locally available concentrates have had a dramatic impact on Zincor?s operations during the previous two years. Zincor has responded with the implementation of a number of technical improvements to the process to decrease cost and increase revenue and plant flexibility. Among the initiatives is the pre-leaching and pelletising of the zinc concentrate, de-bottlenecking and process improvements in the leach and purification circuits, the introduction of cathode washing and automated cathode stacking in the cell house and the installation of a new furnace to produce pre-alloyed jumbos. This paper will describe these initiatives and others that Zincor have recently taken to stay competitive in changing global base metals market.

A comparison between hydraulic and pneumatic rockdrills by T. C. Marshall, Pr.Eng. (Member) The greatly increased output of rockdrills has placed new demands on booms, carriers, and drill steels and bits. Limited scope for further improvement in pneumatic rockdrills has led to the development of hydraulic rockdrills, which compare favourably with their pneumatic counterparts: they are more efficient, more flexible in coping with variations in the working conditions, more economical in the consumption of drill steel, and less productive of noise and mist. Their disadvantages include a greater need for a reliable power supply, a greater vulnerability to dirt, greater complexity (requiring more skilful maintenance), and the liberation of heat into the working environment. They should be regarded as a complement to, and not as a substitute for, pneumatic rockdrills.

The first Issue in this new series brings together a set of review articles by leading authorities in the field which, taken together, provide a thorough and detailed survey of many of the key topics of current concern relating to the environmental impact of mining. The level of treatment of most topics is at first introductory but evolves through to the advanced level of current research, backed up by extensive citations of relevant primary literature and other sources. Thus the Issue as a whole will be found equally valuable by students of environmental science and those actively engaged in research related to this theme.

In order to test the applicability of elastodynamic codes in the modeling of mining related problems, comparisons are made between seismic data and numerical analyses. The dynamic finite difference program WA VE is used for the modeling of a horizontal stope in a deep mine. The slip along a vertical fault situated within the positive excess shear stress lobe of the stope initiates seismic waves. The stope-fault geometry is modeled in both two and three dimensions. The three dimensional non-slip weakening WAVE analyses correlate well with Brune&apos;s analytical model. For accurate modeling of the peak particle velocities predicted by McGarr&apos;s empirical relationship, it is recommended that a three-dimensional stope -fault model is used, with the amount of slip weakening dependent on the magnitude of the event.

The Tromp distribution curve was used in an evaluation of gravity separators treating a synthetic ore made up of silica and marker minerals of various relative densities. The results pinpoint differences in the concentration of particles of different sizes, and indicate how the grade of a concentrate is likely to vary with particle size. An increase in the feed rate increased the efficiency of the &apos;waterless&apos; spiral concentrator that was tested, but the multiport spiral concentrator tested was more efficient. Both spiral concentrators were found to be more efficient than the pinched sluice and the shaking table that were tested. The method was found to be a useful way of evaluating gravity concentrators, but, for ease of analysis, care must be taken in the choice of marker minerals.

Although it is often said that South Africa does not have suitable deposits, or the potential to develop mines on a small scale, a recent survey by the Chamber of Mines1 showed that, out of a sample of 641 producers, 41 per cent had between 10 and 19 employees, and a further 29 per cent had between 20 and 29 employees. This goes to show that minerals-related small, medium, and micro-enterprises (SMMEs) do exist, and can play an important role in the development of rural industries in South Africa. Nchaka Moloi of the Department for Mineral and Energy Affairs defined the various categories of SMMEsas shown in Table I2. An enterprise could be placed in a certain category as long as two of the variables, employees, capex or production applied.

On the one-hundredth anniversary of the founding of the South African School of Mines, this paper presents a historical review of the tertiary mining education carried out by the School of Mines in Kimberley and the subsequent institutions in Johannesburg. In addition to recording and evaluating a century of mining education, it describes the current activities of the Department of Mining Engineering at the University of the Witwatersrand, which is believed to be the natural successor to the School of Mines. The comparison of earlier and contemporary academic mining activities reflects a gradual transition from the educational philosophy and objectives of a school of mines to those of a modem university department. In the conclusions, some aspects of the educational effort expended during the past hundred years are briefly highlighted.

This paper describes the design and implementation of the dispatching system at LAB Chrysotile Inc.&apos;s Black Lake Mine Operation, Quebec, Canada. The initial system uses a computer in a passive role, to record and display information in ongoing operations. Simulation studies were undertaken at McGill University to assess various heuristic dispatching rules which can be program- med and inserted into the dispatching system. The computer can then suggest to the operator where a truck should be sent to maximize productivity or improve fleet efficiency. The study stresses the importance of considering the effects of implementing computerized systems on those individuals who must use these systems in their daily work. The roles of individuals from the industry and the university in this joint project are also highlighted.

Exxaro Sands KZN produces?among other heavy mineral products?high titania slag, which is used as feedstock to the pigment industry. The titania slag is produced from the smelting of ilmenite in two 36 MW DC furnaces. In this smelting process carbon monoxide gas is produced. This gas is cooled, scrubbed and washed to remove entrained dust. This paper provides details on the gas cleaning plant system and the chemistry, mineralogy and size distribution of the particulate material contained in the off-gas stream. Characterization of the dust shows that is consists mainly of ilmenite, but with relatively high levels of SiO2and MnO. Smelting of the dust in a 500 kW DC furnace was carried out to investigate the potential for recovering valuable elements from the dust.

Paper written on project work carried out in partial fulfilment of BSc (Hons) (Eng) (Mechanical) degree Discrete element methods (DEM) are being used to provide detailed impact histories of the particles in comminution devices, such as mills. To match this immense detail of information, far more informative breakage tests than those that are generally conducted are now required. The split Hopkinson pressure bar apparatus is used in this study, as it allows the calculation of breakage forces and absorbed energies. The geometry of rock particles has been identified as significant, so this project undertook to identify the influence of shape on the breakage pattern of blue stone. Comparisons are then made between the breakage pattern of angular rocks and rounded, milled rocks for single impact fracture and consecutive impact loading at low energy. Results of this experiment indicate that although breakage for both geometries occurs over a similar energy range, rounded particles have the greater probability of fracture because they absorb more of the impact energy for a given loading. Size distributions of progeny show that five pebbles or more are sufficient to predict the distribution of most particles in small energy regimes. Cumulative impact testing shows that considerably more energy is required to break a rock through cumulative damage than through a single impact?this is of considerable importance in the light of the indications from DEM simulations that most breakage in a mill will be from cumulative damage rather than single impact breakage.

High density slurry and paste tailings systems offer significant environmental benefits primarily related to reduced water consumption. However, these potential advantages need to be evaluated on a project-by-project basis. The successful design of a thickened or paste tailings system requires that the system is designed to accommodate the effect of the high density slurry on pumps, pipelines and the overall system operation. The transport system must be designed as an integrated unit and the interaction of all the components need to be considered. The transport system includes the slurry preparation plant, the pump station and the pipeline. This paper assesses the impact of increasing the slurry density in a platinum tailings system from conventional densities to thickened and paste tailings densities. As slurry density and rheology increase, there is a sharp increase in energy consumption for the additional water savings and this additional cost needs to be considered. A case study shows that there is a considerable benefit in increasing densities to the point at which tailings can be still be deposited in the standard manner. For existing systems, increasing density can result in an increased capacity at a marginal power cost, provided that the slurry is not too viscous. For a new system, a smaller pump and pipeline can result in lower capital costs and a marginally higher energy cost, if the optimum density is selected. Keywords: tailings, paste, pumping, slurry

The common law requires an employer to take reasonable steps for the safety of employees. In general, the duty of care means that the employer, acting personally or through its employees or agents, must take reasonable care for the safety of its employees (Van Deventer v Workmen?s Compensation Commissioner; 1962 (4) SA 28 T; Oosthuizen v Homegas (Pty) Ltd 1992 (3) SA 463 T).The duty of care includes the provision of safe premises, safe machinery and tools and a safe system of work. The obligation is not an absolute one, but is restricted by the concept of reasonableness. The common law duty may, in certain cases, include the assessment of hazards and risks. 2 International law Great emphasis has been placed in the Western world on the prevention of occupational diseases and injuries. Detailed statutes and regulations govern specific industries in many countries. See, e.g. the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations of the United Kingdom and various regulations applicable to the use of asbestos and lead, fire protection, mines and quarries, petroleum, etc. Risk management is an important part of managing health and safety. In the United Kingdom, the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations, 1999, require every employer to make a ?suitable and sufficient assessment of the risks to health and safety of his employees to which they are exposed whilst they are at work?. The particularity of the assessment is determined by the risk in question.
