Real-time monitoring makes it possible to detect any disturbance occurring in production, while decision instruments can efficiently assist decision-makers to optimize production, reduce iterative workload, obtain better solutions, and preview possible results. Technologies for the above already exist and have been proven in the process industry, i.e. refining and smelting. Optimization is also essential for profitable and stable mining production. Real-time monitoring has already taken hold in mining operations, especially in surface mining, while optimization techniques have also been widely used in underground mining, particularly for planning and scheduling. This review is limited to the hard-rock mining production of metallic ores such as gold and copper. It reviews optimization techniques developed for mine planning and scheduling, and communication technologies suitable for underground applications. It also presents control features for individual operation units, and discusses the technical viability of a mining production real-time optimization (MPRTO) system for underground mines, with possible benefits and challenges. Operational disturbances always occur in mine production. An MPRTO system can be useful to maintain operational effectiveness and efficiency by allowing quick changes to short-term plans. This paper briefly describes the MPRTO system, including the input, output, and basic algorithms. The technical prerequisites for the system specified here are already available. A study of the dissolution of gold from a pyrite concentrate and from various calcines is reported. The percentage extraction of gold was found to decrease with increasing sulphur content in the material leached because of the porosity of the materials, and particularly because of the passivation of the anodic dissolution of gold when the gold was In contact with other conducting minerals. This is explained in terms of the current-potential curves for the oxidation of gold and the reduction of dissolved oxygen.

Discussion: T. L. Gibbs,* (Honorary Vice-President and Fellow): In terms of the Pneumoconiosis Compensation Act of 1962, a Pneumoconiosis Risk Committee was established whose function it is to estimate (by whatever means the committee deems fit) in respect of every controlled mine the pneumoconiosis risk to which persons employed in a dusty atmosphere at that mine are exposed. In estimating such risk the committee may estimate different risks in respect of individual mines or parts of mines or classes or groups of mines or occupations or localities at mines. The pneumoconiosis risk may be reviewed and re-estimated at any time. The Act provides further that the General Council for Pneumoconiosis Compensation shall apportion the levy imposed on owners of controlled mines on the basis of the pneumoconiosis risk determined by the risk committee and the numbers of persons employed in a dusty atmosphere. The task of the risk committee is a most responsible one and also a very difficult and complex one in view of the many different types of mines, rock formations, dust conditions, etc. Quite obviously, comparisons between mines cannot be made on dust concentrations alone as different mineral dusts have different toxicity or pneumoconiosis response factors. However, with its present knowledge, the risk committee is satisfied that the risk at mines, other than coal mines, is related to the mean quartz-equivalent dust concentration to which persons are exposed and the estimation of risks is based on this relationship. From the above, it will be clear that the work done by Dr du Toit on the problem of basing the current rate of levies to provide for pneumoconiosis compensation on the current dust hazard at mines has been of immense value to the risk committee. Up to now the risk committee has not been able to obtain complete and accurate information on the dust exposure of persons at all mines - and, in fact, it is doubtful whether it will be economic or practicable to obtain this in the foreseeable future - but reasonable assessments have been possible from routine dust sampling in some cases and from periodic comprehensive dust surveys in others. As a temporary measure the risks of some mines were estimated initially on a group basis relating to average dust conditions and the type of rock and mineral mined, but as more information became available, differentiation between individual mines became possible. It is the aim of the risk committee to eventually apply such a differentiation in all cases and to ensure that within the bounds of practicability each mine pays for its risk and for its risk only. In this connection, the relationship between the levies and the amounts actually paid out in compensation are examined regularly. In conclusion, I wish to add my congratulations to the author on his excellent paper. His findings will assist materially in the just administration of that very important piece of beneficial legislation, the Pneumoconiosis Compensation Act. G. K. Sluis Cremer MD (Visitor): Dr du Toit has made a valiant attempt to relate dust hazard and the rate of collecting funds for the purpose of paying compensation for Pneumoconiosis. In doing so he has had to make a number of assumptious, some of which touch on the medical aspects of pneumoconiosis. It is worth discussing whether these assumptions are justifiable. Pneumoconiosis is defined in our Pneumoconiosis Act as permanent disease of the cardio-respiratory organs which is caused by the inhalation of mineral dust. To a non-medical person this definition has probably a clear cut meaning. The doctors however have to deal with such conditions as silicosis and asbestosis where there is a well defined dose response relationship to the inhalation of quartz and asbestos respectively and on the other hand chronic bronchitis where the relationship to dust inhalation is poorly defined and where certainly no clear dose response relationship has emerged after many investigations in this country and overseas. Nevertheless since 1953 about half of our certifications for Pneumoconiosis are on the grounds of chronic bronchitis i.e. the X-rays show no evidence of silicosis, asbestosis or other relevant disease. This fact must affect Dr du Toit's computations. The next assumption we should examine is the manner in which toxicity factors have been allocated to the various mineral species. These allocations have in part been based on a restricted number of animal experiments carried out overseas but mostly in South Africa by Webster at the Pneumoconiosis Research Unit. To extrapolate the findings in a relatively small number of animal experiments to the expected reactious in man is a notoriously dangerous exercise. Furthermore the bracketing together of all silicates (except asbestos) and the insoluble metal oxides is entirely unacceptable. Talc (a hydrated silicate of magnesium) and muscovite mica (a silicate of aluminium and potassium) cause pneumoconiosis in their own right. On the other hand

The kinetic leaching behaviour of a low-grade surface gold ore and a high-grade reef ore were evaluated to determine the achievable gold recovery from these ores and particularly mixtures of these ores. The reef ore material has a head grade of 13.40 g/t with a relative standard deviation of 3%, and the unprocessed surface ore material a head grade of 0.43 g/t with a relative standard deviation of 15.6%. It is concluded that the kinetic leaching behaviour of these free milling gold ores during cyanidation, is not influenced by mixing of reef and surface ore material. No statistically significant relationship exists between the achievable recovery by direct cyanidation and the head grade of the material fed. No ideal ratio of surface ore to reef ore could be established. It is recommended that these materials should be processed simultaneously to minimize the costs, security risks, and losses incurred in transportation.

For many years rockbursts have plagued the mining industry. Although much research has gone into studying this phenomenon only a small proportion of it has been on the actual source mechanism. A study was recently carried out to compliment the previous work done on the micro-structure of these features and to compare it to the micro-structures seen on shatter cones, from meteorite impacts. Both optical and electron-microscopy were used during the study. Samples were collected from rockburst sites by the CSIR Miningtek Rockburst Investigation Unit, and from the collar of the Vredefort Impact Crater. In the optical-microscopy study, the pinnate fractures observed in previous studies were seen in the shatter cones, through all the material. In the rockburst samples, the fractures were observed only in the quartz grains. Quartz micro-crystals were present in the rockburst samples and appeared to be the product of comminution rather than crystallisation. Cataclasite was present on rockburst and shatter cone fracture surfaces. The observations of the shatter cone surfaces with the scanning electron microscope are in agreement with previous work, including the observed presence of melt features, spherules and spheroidal material. The deformation in the rockburst samples is concentrated in the quartz grains, highly complicated with brittle features like sub-conchoidal structures and step structures present. A quartz spherule was identified on one rockburst sample and rhombic-dodecahedra type micro-crystals were present and seen fracturing off quartz grains. It is clear that the rockburst and shatter cone fracture surfaces are quite different; the shatter cone deformation is equally distributed across the sample and involves plastic-deformation, while the deformation in the rockburst material is concentrated in the quartz grains and, with the exception of spherule formation, is brittle. This study agreed with the current explanation for the formation of the rhombic-dodecahedra, and disproved the possibility of it being coesite or fine-grained meta-chert. Although there is no definite evidence of the mechanism of formation of the spherule, it is believed to be the product of vaporization and condensation, and the presence of this material indicates the extreme conditions under which this event occurred.

Modern soil mechanics is generally considered to have begun in 1925, when Karl Terzaghi published his book Erdbaumechanik auf bodenphysikalischer Grundlage (Earthwork Mechanics based on the Physics of Soils). These theories were applied to rocks more than 20 years later and the science of rock mechanics became established. Methods of analysis and design have been introduced and applied, and have evolved over time. More recently, the rapid growth in computing power has resulted in more sophisticated analyses, and together with improved monitoring techniques, our understanding of geomechanics has grown considerably. Despite this, geotechnical failures with major consequences still do occur. This is partly due to failure to transfer and apply the knowledge that has been gained, but also there are aspects of geomechanics that are not well understood.

The Institute revived a valuable tradition when, on the 19th of March, 1983, it held its first 'annual' banquet in some fifteen years. It was such a sparkling success that it is sure to be held more frequently in future. The success of the occasion was borne out by the fact that the main banqueting hall at the Wanderers Club was filled to capacity, with over four hundred members and guests.

The meteorological conditions in South Africa are not conducive to the effective dispersion of air pollutants. In the light of this, and because of the magnitude, concentration, and future growth potential of the metallurgical industry, control of air pollution is essential. Methods of abatement are discussed for each branch of the metallurgical Industry, as well as for open-cast mining and bulk ore storage. Some recommendations are made regarding potentially rewarding research and development.

Titanium is an exciting structural material that can offer significant strength-to-weight advantages over currently used alloys. However, its Achilles? heel is its costly, energy-intensive production process that effectively eliminates it from competing with aluminium and high-strength steels, apart from critical applications where titanium forms only a small component of the total cost. Current attempts are being made to reduce the cost of titanium products and these recognize the importance of minimizing the costs over the total production chain. Powder metallurgy (PM) technologies play a crucial role within this, as the output of the existing and potential primary metal production methods is in the form of sponge or powder. By using PM, costly remelting and forming operations can then be avoided, except in the manufacture of large components. Metal injection moulding (MIM) is an effective process for producing complex net-shape components in large volumes from metal powders. Nevertheless, the commercial use of titanium powders in this process is still in its infancy. The only major supplier of feedstock utilizes a polyacetal-based binder. This gives good green strength but requires a catalytic nitric acid process to remove most of the binder prior to thermal treatment. As this involves additional and expensive equipment and is a potentially hazardous process, there is interest in finding an alternative binder system that can be debound either purely thermally or that involves a less hazardous, more environmentally friendly solvent. This paper describes the use of capillary rheometry to characterize the influence of temperature and shear rates on the flow behaviour of potential binder systems for titanium MIM feedstock. During the past ten years there has been an upsurge of interest in the development of selective ion exchange resins and solvents, and of ion-exchange and solvent extraction equipment tailored to the special requirements of mineral-processing circuits. It is therefore not surprising that the recent Symposium on Ion Exchange and Solvent Extraction in Mineral Processing, held at the National Institute for Metallurgy (NIM) on 7th and 8th February, 1980, was a resounding success. This Symposium, organized jointly by NIM. Charcoal is an interesting reducing agent because it is produced from growing wood which is renewable and does not contribute to global warming, provided that there is a balance between the felling of timber and growth of trees. In the biocarbon project the possibilities for using charcoal is investigated as well as other biological based and renewable reductants for ferroalloy production. The background for the project is that the Norwegian ferroalloy producers wish to contribute to reduction of CO2- emissions. This paper focuses on the use of charcoal instead of coke for the production of manganese alloys, and the consequences of doing so. Results from practical SiMn smelting experiments on a pilot scale have previously been reported, where only 12-14 % Si in the metal was obtained when charcoal was used. Recently we have attained satisfactory 18 %Si also for charcoal, but good results are indeed dependant on good furnace performance. There is no tradition for using charcoal for manganese production in Norway. A change from using mainly coke to the use of some charcoal will demand new routines for furnace operation, raw material and off-gas handling. Hence, characteristic properties of charcoal, which may cause change of furnace operation, have been measured and are compared to coke. The following results are presented: ?Thermal abrasion strength together with CO2- reactivity; important parameters for the performance of the upper part of the furnace. ?Coke-bed resistance; it will increase with the use of charcoal (a review of new results). ?Slag reactivity; a relevant method for testing slag reactivity of industrial reductants is of interest. The suggested method can serve for comparing slag reactivities towards graphite.

A large body of work exists discussing the impact of grinding media on mineral flotation. Generally, the work indicates that a change to a less electrochemically active grinding environment has positive benefits on downstream processing. There is a fear, however, that these benefits may not be realized when treating low sulphide containing ores, typified by UG2 style deposits. A series of experiments was developed to test the flotation response of UG2 ores using the Magotteaux Mill® to determine if measurable differences in the pulp chemistry could be discerned using a range of grinding media types. Further, the flotation responses of the contained sulphides (chalcopyrite, pentlandite and pyrrhotite) were determined. The data collected provided strong evidence that the grinding environment can significantly influence the pulp chemistry and flotation characteristics of all sulphide minerals, even when the ore contains less than 0.5 per cent total sulphide. The results show that the change to an inert media type produced a substantial improvement in the flotation rate of all sulphide minerals, as well as the PGMs.

Results from a study undertaken at a Transvaal colliery on the feasibility of undermining an urban development by conventional bord-and-pillar mining operations in the No. 4 Seam of the Highveld Coalfield are discussed. Surface ground vibrations above production sections were measured, analysed, and then compared with well-accepted guidelines so that the expected effects of vibration on inhabitants and surface structures could be determined. The measurement and scaling of ground vibration from blasting are outlined, and the effects on humans and structures are discussed. It is concluded that residential areas can be safely undermined by conventional drilling and blasting techniques provided certain simple guidelines are followed.

Premier of the North-West Province, Mr Molefe, foreign dignitaries and guests, ladies and gentlemen. It is a pleasure and also a special honour for me to have been invited here this morning to make this address. The xv Congress of the Council of Mining and Metallurgical Institutions is, by its very nature, an extremely important event for the international minerals industry. But I believe that this specific Congress assumes an even greater significance because of the profound and far-reaching changes that have taken place in South Africa this year. These are exhilarating times, a period when so much in our country has altered and when so much has to be done so quickly to build positively on our bold political decisions.

In this study, the development of a new method for investigating the diffusion of metal cations in multi-component slag systems, using microprobe analysis is discussed. This method allows the analysis of the diffusion of multiple species within a single system. This project has focused on the diffusion characteristics of manganese, iron, calcium and silicon in silicate slags, in order to simulate industrial steel and ferromanganese production. The diffusion behaviour of transition metals is of particular interest because of the effects of their variable valence. This study identified the variation in diffusivity of slag components with changes in composition and temperature of multi-component slag systems. The molecular structure of the experimental calcium-aluminosilicate slags was investigated to determine the chemical and physical properties that influence diffusion behaviour. This experimental data was used to develop predictive models for diffusivity. These models enable the estimation of the diffusivity of many slag components in complex slags, over a range of compositions.

The Hydraulic Institute has completed the task of developing a new ANSI/HI standard 12.1-12.6 (2005) for rotodynamic (centrifugal) slurry pumps covering nomenclature, definitions, applications, and operation. The standard provides examples of the different slurry pump types and contains an extensive section on pump and slurry definitions. The effect of slurry on pump performance is covered along with the pumping of froth. Reference is also made to ANSI/HI standard 9.6.7 (2004), which contains anew method for pump performance correction when handling viscous fluids. Classification of slurry services is established and then is used to determine limitations on velocities and total head per pump in order to obtain acceptable wear performance. The new service class, head per stage and other limits are directly related to capital and other cost considerations that will affect solids transport system economics. The writers review the contents of the new standard, highlight the main points, and discuss the reason for the slurry classification, corresponding limits and expected implications, particularly with respect to operating costs of the pumps in solids transport systems.

The practice of leaving barrier pillars between adjacent longwall panels at The Durban Navigation Collieries (Pty) Ltd (Dumacol) has resulted in a considerable loss of coal reserves. Dumacol has now modified the layout of its longwall panels to allow the concurrent mining of barri9f pillars and the extraction of the longwalls. The Implementation of the new panel layout has increased the percentage extraction of reserves and will result in an extension in the life of the mine. The method of extracting barrier pillars between adjacent longwall panels is described in this paper.

Contribution by G. Narsimhan It was with much pleasure that I went through D.F. Malan's excellent paper. The following explanatory and critical note has been the result of my deep study of the paper. Although by qualifications and experience I have been a chemical engineer, involved over four decades with problems in the modeling and simulation of transport-limited (heat and mass) chemical reactions in multi-phase systems, I have of and on interested myself in challenging problems in extractive metallurgy. This is the first time I have veered of to continuum mechanics, at the age of 71! Author's reply. I thank Professor Narsimhan for his extensive contribution to the paper. It provided me with the stimulus to derive an extended model. However, there are some inaccuracies in his arguments that need further discussion. Professor Narsimhan's main concern is that there is not a good enough fit between the derived viscoelastic Kelvin model and the experimental data supplied by Güler1 (see Figure l1 on page 218 of my paper). I will therefore explain the choice of a viscoelastic model in more detail and also make specific comments on the arguments given in his contribution.

A vehicle proximity warning–collision avoidance system is being developed using GPS and wireless local area networks to improve safety of off-highway trucks in open pit mines. After two-and a-half years of research, software development, and laboratory testing, field tests were carried out at operating limestone quarries and open pit mining operations to evaluate GPS accuracy and overall system effectiveness under rugged operating conditions. This article describes the progress made on this NIOSH-funded project and discusses the GPS accuracy tests and overall system tests that were carried out during the year 2001 at the Colorado School of Mines Survey Field and at the Morenci open pit copper mine in Arizona.
