When gold plant residues are cycloned for producing a coarse product for backfilling the gold and uranium values are upgraded in the backfill product. Gravity concentration, wet high intensity magnetic separation and froth flotation were investigated as first-stage recovery processes to recover these economic values from backfill prior to placement underground. This paper addresses the recovery of values from flotation concentrates and also details the economic feasibility of a treatment route including flotation, followed by roasting of flotation concentrate to liberate gold entrapped in pyrite and reverse gold leaching of the calcine so produced.

Some years ago, the authors developed an analysis of non-Newtonian pipe flow based on enhanced turbulent microscale and associated sub-layer thickening. This analysis, which can be used for various rheologic modelling equations, has in the past been applied to smooth-walled pipes. The present paper extends the analysis to rough walls, using the popular Bingham plastic equation as a representative rheological behaviour in order to prepare friction-factor plots for comparison with measured results. The conditions for laminar-turbulent transition for both smooth and rough walls are also considered, and comparisons are made with earlier correlations and with experimental data.

Paper written on project work carried out in partial fulfilment of B. sc. Eng (Mining Engineering) The purpose of this investigation was to assess the mining strategy for steep reefs at Mine A mine in 2005 and 2006. Reefs steeper than 35° were discovered when production commenced at the mine. At that time reefs steeper than 35° were not popular in South African tabular gold mines, therefore new techniques of mining them had to be developed. The underhand mining method was chosen for this purpose. The project was about assessing ventilation, support costs, local support cycles, adherence to the mine?s support standards, mine planning and efficiencies of the underhand mining method. The project work was covered by doing a literature research for underhand mining methods and performing a literature review of the mining methods, support methods, ventilation standards at Mine A. Underground visits were conducted at Mine A mine for data collection, and Mine B was visited to obtain information on support costs and efficiencies. During the investigation it was realized that the underhand mining method was an appropriate method for mining steep reefs; however, there were some challenges related to ventilation and support installation. Efficiencies could be realized with the underhand mining method and planning and scheduling were not different from breast mining.

During pillar extraction, sidewall fracturing and spalling at some collieries constitute a severe stratacontrol problem. In order to obtain a better understanding of this phenomenon, a survey of pillar corner conditions before and during pillar extraction was conducted at one particular site. For the various successive mining steps, the vertical stresses on the pillar corners were calculated by use of a three-dimensional boundary element program. A significant correlation was found between the calculated vertical stress prior to the extraction of the panel and the sidewall conditions. During the extraction of the panel, a significant deterioration of the sidewall conditions at a pillar occurred only when the adjacent pillar was mined, causing an increase in vertical stress on the remaining pillar.

This paper reports the results of a literature review carried out on nitrogen-alloyed austenitic stainless steels and their properties. It was found that a large volume of work has been carried out on the subject, particularly with regard to the more common stainless steels such as types 304 and 316. No work appears to have been conducted on the highly alloyed steels such as type 310S. Nitrogen has been found to increase the stability of the austenite in stainless steels and to impart significant improvements in the mechanical and corrosion properties of these alloys. Importantly, nitrogen appears to increase both the ductility and the strength of austenitic stainless steels over a wide range of temperatures.

During the period October 2003 to June 2004, a containerized optical sorting pilot plant was operated at Kloof Gold Mine on a waste rock dump. In this paper, we describe the test work and its results leading to the decision to operate this pilot plant. This paper presents the operational data and financial figures achieved during this project, in particular, for the month of June 2004 when the plant was run at full capacity on three shifts, 24 hour operation. These results are also extrapolated and presented to show the profitability of such an operation at today?s gold price levels and cost structure.

The International Solvent Extraction Conference takes place every three years, under the auspices of the international Solvent Extraction Committee. ISEC '96 held in Melbourne, Australia, in March 1996, was attended by delegates from 34 countries. South Africa was well represented, with delegates from Amplats, De Beers, Mintek, Western Platinum Refinery, and independent consultant Phillip Lloyd (who represents South Africa on the International Committee). The theme of this year's conference was 'Value Adding through Solvent Extraction'. Five plenary lectures were presented. Dr E. Blass of Germany gave the opening presentation entitled 'Solvent extraction-a historical review', which traced evidence for the use of solvent extraction (SX) from the time of the ancient Egyptians, through the Middle Ages and Renaissance, to the Industrial Revolution.

Arthur Robert Owen Wiliams died on 18th May, 1989, at the age of 84. ARO, as he was known, was educated at Malvern in England, and graduated from the Royal School of Mines in 1926. He went to South Africa as a Learner Miner with Consolidated Gold Fields at Robinson Deep.

Fracturing of the rock caused considerable difficulties during the boring of a deep-level tunnel in hard rock. A pilot bore was suggested as a possible means of reducing the effect of the fracturing, and this possibility was investigated theoretically by means of a three-dimensional elastic stress analysis. Failure criteria were applied to the results of this analysis, and it was found that fractures predicted by the use of a simple criterion of limiting tensile macrostrain criterion agreed remarkably well with in situ observation. It was concluded that fracture could not be avoided and that a pilot bore was likely to aggravate tunnelling conditions.

Professor Miklos Salamon, Research Adviser to the Chamber of Mines of South Africa, has won the Rock Mechanics Award for 1983 of the American Institute of Mining, Metallurgical and Petroleum Engineers 'for applications of analysis to many varied practical mine design problems’. PRESENT Minutes of the Annual General Meeting, held on Friday the 20th August, 1971, at 7.45 p.m. in the Boulevard Hotel, Witbank. Mr J. Meintjies in the Chair, 15 Fellows, 7 Members, 2 Associate Members and 10 Visitors. Mr Meintjies extended a welcome to all the members and their wives, and the many visitors and their wives. A special welcome to Mr Robinson the outgoing President of the Institute and Prof. Howat the President Elect and Mrs Howat. The minutes were read and adopted. The Chairman read his Report for the past year and also the Financial Statement. Mr E. Jackson proposed the acceptance of the Financial Statement and Mr Winship seconded it. Mr Meintjies thanked Mr Vic Robinson for all the help he had given throughout the past year. He also thanked the outgoing Committee for their support, and the Secretary for arranging the function. Mr Meintjies congratulated Mr Alex Bain on his election as Chairman and asked him to continue with the meeting. Mr Bain thanked Mr Meintjies for the good work which he had done in the past year and then announced the names of the Committee for the ensuing year. A. Bain Chairman G. Carlyon Vice Chairman J. Introduction Although months have passed since APCOM 87, held from 19th to 23rd September, 1987, the vivid memories of all aspects of its activities remain as clear in one's mind as if it all happened only yesterday. The Symposium, which was held at the Johannesburg Sun Hotel, was organized by The South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy in collaboration with the Council for Mineral Technology (Mintek), supported by The Geostatistical Association of South Africa, The Operations Research Society of South Africa, and the Computer Society of South Africa, and was backed financially by the Chamber of Mines of South Africa. The total number of registrants amounted to 375 delegates and 50 affiliates: 100 of the delegates were from outside the Republic of South Africa and represented 15 countries, namely Australia, Brazil, Canada, Chile, France, Great Britain, Greece, Italy, Namibia, Phillipines, Sweden, Turkey, United States of America, West Germany, and Zimbabwe.

The President: "It gives me great pleasure to call on Professor Howat to present the paper written jointly with P. R. Jochens and C. W. Wolhuter entitled, 'Utilisation of slags for the manufacture of cement.' After the presentation of the paper the President said: "Thank you, Professor Howat, for so ably introducing the paper prepared by yourself, Dr Jochens and Mr Wolhuter. Once again we are deeply indebted to you for bringing to our attention a new development in the metallurgical field, this time a technique for assessing the suitability of slags for the production of slag cement, and thereby providing a means of turning a waste material into a valuable asset. May we hope that this will lead to an end to unsightly slag dumps and, at the same time, to some conservation of our local limestone resources. Discussion within this Institute on the problems of cement manufacture, has of recent years been all too infrequent, and we thank you for bringing this interesting and important subject again to our notice. We are doubly grateful to you and your co-authors. May I now call on Dr Stutterheim, Deputy Director of the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research, to contribute to your paper, and to tell us something about the Conference on the Chemistry of Cement which he attended in Tokyo towards the end of last year." (Applause.) Dr N. Stutterheim, Mr B. F. van der Merwe and Dr F. S. Fulton then contributed to the paper. (These contributions will appear in a later issue of the Journal.)
