Multiphase flow in the widely used Vanyukov furnace was numerically studied. An unsteady three-dimensional and three-phase flow model was firstly built using the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) software ANSYS FLUENT®, and then solved with the volume of fluid (VOF) and k - ??model. The results showed that the proposed model could be used to predict the multiphase movement, the slag/air fluctuation, the vortex formation, and effects of structural and operational parameters. By fast Fourier transform (FFT), the dominant frequency of density with time signal was calculated as 0.29 Hz. The analysis of different injection flow rates of enriched air indicated that this variable has a major effect on the mean slag velocity. The peak mean velocity increased from 2.17 to 4.99 m/s while the flow rate of enriched air varied from 70 to 160 m/s. The proposed model provides a method to optimize the furnace structure and operating conditions for the best furnace performance and lowest energy consumption.

This paper describes an investigation into the prereduction of hematite fines in a fluidized-bed reactor as a means by which they can be prepared for direct smelting in a transfered-arc plasma furnace. A single-stage fixed fluidized bed reactor using the in situ gasification of coal was employed. It is shown that the hematite is reduced to magnetite at 1000 QC, the degree of reduction being limited by the inherent shortcomings of a single-stage reactor in which both the gasification and the reduction reactions have to occur. Methods by which the degree of reduction can be increased are suggested. The gasification process was studied in some detail, and three different reducing agents are compared. The dominating effect of the Boudouard reaction on the behaviour of the fluidized bed is clearly illustrated. Non-coking coals of high reactivity are best suited to this process, a finding that would complement the trend away from coke as a metallurgical reducing agent.

"Coal seam gas problems can adversely affect the safety and productivity of underground coal mines, leading to fatalities and financial losses. Conventional gas management technologies using ventilation and gas drainage are unable to deal with the high and irregular gas emissions associated with high-production longwall mining. New technologies need to be developed to supplement the traditional gas management techniques to minimize the hazard of coal seam gas. Thin spray-on liners (TSLs) have gained some success for rock surface support since their introduction to the mining industry. Due to their relatively low permeability and appropriate mechanical properties, TSLs also show potential to be used as a gas management tool in underground coal mines.In this paper we review the current gas management challenges and discuss the potential use of TSLs as a gas management tool in underground coal mines. This may involve reducing gas migration into the excavations/roadways, enhancing in-seam gas drainage, and preventing spontaneous combustion. Some potential areas for future research work are identified. IntroductionWhen a coal seam is influenced by mining activities, gas stored inside is liberated into the underground ventilation system. Gas emissions have created serious difficulties for the coal mining industry around the world. Therefore, coal mines have to develop effective strategies to control the gas concentration below the threshold value to meet statutory requirements. Ventilation has been the first solution in gas management for underground coal mining. When the emitted gas cannot be effectively diluted by ventilated air, gas drainage using pre- and/or post-drainage has to be introduced. However, even with ventilation and gas drainage, irregular gas emissions usually increase the gas concentration in roadways and slow down the development rate, thus causing significant economic loss to the coal mining industry (Thakur, 2006). Therefore, new technologies need to be developed to address this issue and mitigate the explosion risk."

The mine production scheduling problem (MPSP) has been studied since the 1960s, and remains an active area of computational research. In extending the concepts of the MPSP, the automated mine may now be regarded as a hierarchical intelligent agent in which the bottom layer consists of distributed robotic equipment, while strategic functionality occupies the higher layers. Here we present a disambiguation of artificial intelligence, machine learning, computational optimization, and automation within the mining context. Specifically, the Q-learning algorithm has been adapted to generate the initial solutions for a high-performing strategic mine planning algorithm, originally developed by Lamghari, Dimitrakopoulos and Ferland, based on the variable neighbourhood descent (VND) metaheuristic. The hierarchical intelligent agent is presented as an integrative conceptual platform, defining the interaction between our new Q-learning adaptation and Lamghari’s VND, and potentially other hierarchically controlled components of an artificially intelligent mine, having various degrees of automation. Sample computations involving Q-learning and VND are presented.

Recent studies on the physico-chemical properties of molten slags and oxide solid solutions of interest is reviewed. The review covers redox and phase equilibria in slags, viscosity, diffusivity, electrical conductivity, kinetics of interfacial reactions between slags and CO-CO2, interfacial properties and phenomena. Some highlights from ongoing work on modelling phase diagrams, component activity, viscosity and electrical conductivity of multi-component slags will be presented and results compared with published experimental data on slags with or without suspended solid phases.

In 1992, a paper was compiled highlighting a common-sense approach to electric smelting at Impala Platinum. Since then, the smelter complex has undergone considerable changes. Mineral economics, UG2 exploitation, and changing environmental legislation have enforced numerous process upgrades, yet a common-sense approach has always been adopted. This document details the major changes in the smelter complex at Mineral Processes (Minpro) over the past 15 years, and provides the rationale for the changes. Ausmelt top entry submerged lance technology offers a cost-effective means of carrying out a range of base metal smelting operations with minimum impact on the environment. The system is capable of using a range of fuels depending upon local costs. Due to the intense, localised reaction zone, high energy efficiency is obtained and the physical size of the plant is relatively small compared to that of most competing technologies. Capital cost can thereby be minimised. The furnace is well enclosed, such that fugitive emissions and ingress of diluting air to the gas stream are both minimised. The oxygen potential in the slag can be varied over a wide range such that the system can be applied in both oxidising and reducing duties. Following a general description of the technology, the paper discusses Ausmelt plants already in operation. The application of the technology for the provision of additional smelting capacity, for the improvement of converting operations and for slag cleaning is then described. A brief explanation of how these processes could be applied at southern African smelters is given and the paper closes with an assessment of novel Ausmelt applications for this geographical region, such as zinc recovery from sulphides.

Pyrite (FeS2), chalcopyrite (CuFeS2), sphalerite (ZnS) and galena (PbS) generate hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) when placed in water, with pyrite generating the most amount of H2O2. The order of these minerals for generating H2O2 in water is: pyrite > chalcopyrite > sphalerite > galena. In previous research, the methods of generation of H2O2 in the grinding mill were studied. In this study, data from experiments were included by using MODDE 9 software for six parameters composed of water, grinding media, particle size; adding collector to the grinding, and adding depressant and pH. Finally the optimal condition was achieved. According to the results, most of the recovery is related to the particle 75 μ size and when using processed water, adding 100% collector and without depressant and pH 10. The most recovery of lead in the case of the use of fresh water is in the case of 100% collector, without depressant, pH 10 and 150 μ particle size. Maximum recovery in fraction size 45 μ in the case of water process is 100% collector, without depressant and pH 10. "An ideal procedure to determine the limits of flotation-based separation, as is the case with washability analysis for density separation, does not exist. Therefore, a procedure called release analysis, considered to be the counterpart of the washability process in density separation, was developed to evaluate the flotation characteristics of coal fines. Since flotation is a complex process it is necessary to know the maximum recoverable yield that could be achieved at a target ash level and what could be obtained by release analysis. Due to a number of limitations in the initial procedures, modifications were recommended by various researchers to generate an optimum separation curve. This paper presents a review of, and a discussion on, the chronological evolution of release analysis methodology over the decades. Notwithstanding the availability of a standardized release analysis procedure, such as BS 7530, the paper highlights the critical parameters involved in the procedures, such as coal type, feed characteristics, choice of reagents and dosage, operator bias, and design features of the flotation cell IntroductionCoal is a heterogeneous substance consisting of various combustible constituents (macerals) and associated mineral matter. The kind and abundance of the various macerals present in the coal, such as vitrinite, semivitrinite, exinite, and inertinite, determine the type of coal. As macerals are formed by biological degradation of different parts of the plant material, they have different properties based on their original composition. Coal cleaning processes are dependent on the differences in physical properties between the coal components (the macerals) and also between the macerals and the mineral matter. Thus the cleaning characteristics of the coal might vary from one type to the next. The cleaning processes influence the distribution and the concentration of macerals in the various size and density fractions of the cleaned product."

Owing to decreasing high-grade ore reserves, there is a need for better understanding of the jigging process to improve the recovery efficiency of finer, lower grade material. The use of positron emission particle tracking (PEPT) was examined as a technique to study the motion of iron ore particles inside a laboratory batch jig. PEPT is a non-invasive method that can provide three-dimensional kinetic data on a particle in laboratory-scale processing units and has been successfully used to study mills, hydrocyclones, and flotation. Experiments were conducted to determine whether PEPT would be a viable technique to study iron ore jigging and what valuable information could be obtained. The results indicated that detailed information on the stratification rate of a particle could be obtained, with adequate resolution to track the particle?s movement through an individual jig pulse.

A finite element model was generated of a Søderberg electrode in a ferromanganese smelter. In this model, the casing and fins were modelled explicitly, and temperature-dependent material properties were included. A two-stage analysis procedure was used, the first part being a coupled thermal-electrical analysis using an applied DC current. As the casing material was non-magnetic, the DC current was deemed sufficiently accurate for this initial analysis. The proximity effect was not considered. Thermal boundary conditions based on assumed temperature distributions in the furnace were applied. Calculated temperatures agreed well with measured values. The joule heat calculated in this step was applied as a load to a coupled thermalstress analysis. The model was applied to a comparative study of alternative materials for the casing and fins. A number of different combinations of materials for the casing and fins were evaluated in a comparative study. The position of the baking zone was used as the criterion for evaluating the potential of each material combination. Based on this analysis, some material combinations were discarded as being entirely unsuitable, whilst the two most suitable combinations will be tested experimentally in the furnace. The stress analysis was performed on the most suitable option. The practical advantage of this analysis was that a number of what-if scenarios could be evaluated and discarded prior to embarking on expensive experimental work, thus limiting the amount of experimental effort required. A mathematical model allows for the comparison of options under controlled conditions, where parameters of interest can be varied individually, with all other parameters remaining the same, a condition which is difficult to achieve in an operating furnace.

The Discrete Element Method (DEM) is a model that is used to simulate the motion of the media in a grinding mill. The sum of the energy that is lost in inter-media and media-wall collisions represents the power drawn by the mill. The fact that the DEM predicts the power drawn by grinding mills over a large range of diameters has been used to show the validity of the DEM. However, the power drawn by a mill is a function only of the sum of forces of the load on the shell liners. A more accurate and detailed validation of the DEM would be to measure these forces as a function of angular position as the liner moves under the load, and to compare these measurements with predictions generated using the DEM. An experimental mill has been developed to reproduce exactly what the 2-dimensional DEM simulates. The 0,55 m diameter mill has a length of 0,023 m, which is fractionally larger than the diameter of the media used in the mill. One of the lifters in the mill has been instrumented so that the forces on the lifter can be measured as the mill rotates. The DEM simulation will be used to predict these forces. This will give experimental evidence of the validity of the DEM for modelling load behaviour in rotating grinding mills.

"This study examines the problems faced by open pit mine superintendents who make choices about how to direct their materials, either to the waste dump or to the mill. The paper explores the effects of introducing a 10% sampling error and a 0.9-times to 1.1-times sampling bias on positively skewed distributions for precious and base metals, negatively skewed distributions in the case of bulk commodities, and normal distributions as is the case for coal deposits. Parent distributions for each commodity were created on a 25 x 25 m grid using transformations of gold, iron ore, and coal data-sets, spatially based on a nonconditional Gaussian simulation. Ordinary kriging of grades for the three commodities into a 10 x 10 m grid provided the reference case against which the distributions with the sampling error and sampling bias for the commodities were compared. Imposing cut-off grades on the actual-versus-estimated scatterplots of the three commodities allowed the distributions to be classified into components of waste, dilution, ore, and lost ore. Ordinary kriging of values for each deposit type acted as the reference data-set against which the effects and influence of 10% sampling error and 0.9-times to 1.1-times sampling bias are measured in each deposit type. Indications are that the influence of error and bias is not as significant in gold deposits as it is in iron ore and coal deposits, where the introduction of small amounts of error and bias can severely affect the deposit value.IntroductionThe effects of poor sampling and the financial implications for mining companies, traders in mineral assets, and sellers of metal as dore or commodities is documented in a number of studies, the most notable of which is that by Carasco (2004). He examined the financial impact of poor sampling practices in the Chilean copper industry and found that finacial losses due to poor sampling amounted to hundreds of millions of dollars over the life of a mining operation. Holmes (2004) examined the effects of correct sampling and measurement as the foundations of metallurgical balances, and found that revenues from the sales of large iron ore shipments may be profoundly affected by poor sampling practices. In South Africa the way in which sampling of in situ gold-bearing reefs affects the mine call factor has been an ongoing study since the disparity between the estimation of gold in the reef and the actual gold bullion produced was noted by early investigators such as Beringer (1938), Jackson (1946), Sichel (1947), Harrison (1952), and a number of others."

The development of 3D multi-parametric models facilitate the provision of resource information well in advance of the mining face. Using the model, one can evaluate mining areas not only for grade and tonnage predictions but also for predictions of rock mass quality. Blast design and milling requirements can be derived from the rock mass quality predictions. This information can be used for overall mine planning and evaluation, costing, production optimization and slope design. This allows the full range of mining activities and costs to be interconnected, thereby lowering costs and improving efficiencies through the application of the multi-parametric model. Feasibility studies for new projects require an expected budget expenditure estimate to within 5% of actual costs. This level of accuracy is expected by mining companies and investors but cannot be achieved without a sound knowledge of the rock mass variability. By developing a 3D multi-parametric model as part of the feasibility study and using the same geological model exploration boreholes, a significantly better understanding of the rock mass conditions can be obtained. This rock mass information can be used for equipment selection, economic pit layouts, processing plant design, underground mining layouts and support requirements, to name but a few design parameters that depend on rock mass conditions. The initiative at Anglo Platinums, Potgietersrust Platinum Ltd.?s (PPRust) operation, has delivered significant results showing improvements across the mine to mill value chain. These include increased loading rates, reduced electricity and crushing consumables, as well as higher plant throughput. The ore reserve model has gained international acceptance as an invaluable tool for a mining operation. Certainly most financial organizations will not invest in a mining project that does not have an ore reserve model. There is the potential for multi-parametric models to be recognized as vital tools in the mining process, as is the case with ore reserve models.

"SynopsisOver the last decade in South Africa, there has been a significant increase in the number of mining operations, both open pit and underground, which use independent contractors to carry out mining activities. Often mine owners will choose the contractor option without fully understanding the consequences of undertaking this option. Traditionally, contract mining has come at a cost premium of about 15% to 20% compared to an owner mining scenario. However, due to the large number of junior mining companies entering the mining arena in South Africa contract mining rates have increased, with cost premiums as high as 50% being reported. This paper looks at the merits of owner mining versus contract mining and describes under what conditions it may be favourable to select the one option over the other. In addition, the methodology of entering into contract negotiations with the objective of establishing a fair and sustainable relationship is discussed.IntroductionOver the last decade in South Africa, there has been a significant increase in the number of mining operations, both open pit and underground, which use independent contractors to carry out mining activities. Surface mining, for example, may use contractors to conduct drilling and blasting operations or load and haul operations. Discussion J. de V. Lambrechts (Fellow): The author's paper is a brilliant follow-up of an earlier paper by Starfield and Dickson.1 I have no quarrel with Dr Starfield's computerization of a complex problem, but I do not believe that he is getting quite the right answers from his programme. My impression is that his predictions about wet bulb temperature increases in very deep mines are over optimistic; in other words, that it will be hotter than Dr Starfield predicts. This is putting my views in a nutshell. This is not the occasion on which to indulge in lengthy argument about the original paper by Starfield and Dickson, but the present paper is, after all, based directly on that earlier paper and if the one fails, the other cannot succeed. I did level certain criticisms at the first paper and cannot say that the authors' replies were very convincing. I do not think it is a sin to admit that I belong to the old school which believes in thorough field experimentation and practical trials and no amount of mathematical manipulation or physical theorizing, no matter how excellent, can make up for inadequate practical confirmation. This, as I see it, is still the crux of the matter. The original paper by Starfield and Dickson still rests on somewhat scanty practical evidence and I would be much happier if Dr Starfield's computer programme, based on the Starfield-Dickson model, had been checked against a large mass of observations in the practical mining situation. This is what both Wiles2 and myself3 had tried to do previously. What we lacked in mathematics and/or computer aids, I think the present paper by Dr Starfield lacks in practical substantiation. This is no condemnation of the author's paper which, taken by itself, is excellent but I think the final stage is still lacking, namely the bringing together of theory and empiricism in a manner acceptable to all. This may be wishful thinking on my part but I hope, within the next year or so, to come up with a modified Starfield-Dickson model in such a way that the computer answers will agree in the majority of cases with the few hundred field observations which are already on record. Hemp (Visitor): Dr Starfield's paper has very effectively rounded off one particular aspect of the general problem of heat flow in mines. The ease with which this computer programme can be used to calculate temperature increases in horizontal airways must lead to its wider use in ventilation planning and, in developing this rapid method, Dr Starfield has indeed rendered a valuable service to the mining industry. One could consider further instances of heat flow in airways in which the availability of a rapid computer method would be desirable, e.g. the flow of air down a shaft, where there is an increase in temperature due to adiabatic compression, as well as an increase in virgin rock temperature as the depth increases. However, this particular case would not present any new problems and would merely require an extension of the exisitng work. I should like in this contribution to talk about an aspect of environmental control in mines which, I think, will become more important in the future. It is well known that wet bulb temperatures are subject to fluctuations underground. In some instances, particularly in stopes, the fluctuations, both with time and position, can be considerable. The theoretical work which has been carried out on temperature increases has been aimed at the prediction of mean temperatures, and no account has been taken of fluctuations around this mean. It is questionable whether this approach will, on its own, be sufficient, particularly when temperature increases in stopes are considered. The fluctuations in air temperatures underground arise from two causes. The first of these would be the fluctuations in surface conditions, and here one could list random, diurnal and seasonal fluctuations. The second cause is the multitude of things which vary in a mine and here one could list variations in air flow quantity, sources of evaporation, heat transfer from pump and compressed air columns and, particularly in the stope, variations in air flow patterns. Fluctuations arising from surface temperature variations should be amenable to calculation, and here one envisages figures relating the decay of temperature variation with distance to factors such as air flow quantity. Fluctuations resulting from changes in the mine are perhaps more difficult to tackle theoretically and the best approach could well be to analyse underground observations. In this connection, there is a good case to be made for the increased use of statistical methods in the analysis of underground temperature measurements, and it might be of value to look at current air-conditioning practice. The origins of mine closure practice have influenced the way in which it is implemented by companies and regulators. Mine closure practices essentially started developing in the 1970s in countries with advanced economies and mature mining industries. In these settings, the emphasis was justifiably placed on restoration of the landscape and an attempt was made to return to the ?natural? pre-mining land cover. These practices continued to evolve and incorporated socio-economic and cultural aspects, especially after the Brundtland Report in 1987 and the subsequent Earth Summit in 1992. Today mining is increasingly occurring in remote parts of developing countries where there may be significant need for infrastructure such as roads, clinics, and schools. The costs of returning land to low (economic) value pre-mining use may be far greater than establishing a viable postmining land use that could potentially add value to the community and take pressure off sites for greenfield development elsewhere. Furthermore, natural resource limitations (such as topsoil availability) may limit the degree to which the historical land cover can be re-established. Establishing post-mining land uses may aid in mitigating the loss of employment that is inevitable when mines close. Stakeholder participation in establishing post-mining land cover and land use options is critical for long-term success. Similarly, third parties must be identified to support the development of the post-mining land use This paper draws on the experience of the authors in several developing countries and presents a case for maximizing re-use of mining infrastructure. The paper does not advocate the adoption of poor rehabilitation standards, nor or the wholesale destruction of land capability, but rather leaving key infrastructure in place for post-mining use that may support sustainable development.

Since the first application of solvent extraction as part of the hydrometallurgical processing of copper, several studies have been carried out to optimize extractant formulations. In 2006, Solvay developed the ACORGA® OPT series of solvent-extraction reagents to optimize copper transfer by use of a blended formulation containing both aldoxime and ketoxime as well as selected modifiers. The incorporation of selected modifiers in these blended reagents resulted in increased copper transfer, due to the interaction between the modifier and oximes within the blend. By changing the ketoxime concentration and ratio of modifier to aldoxime, the strength of the formulation was optimized to enhance copper transfer and improve Cu:Fe selectivity. This formulation is well known in the African region under the ACORGA® OPT5540 name and provides the best performance at the conditions of agitated leach plants with pregnant leach solutions that fluctuate in Cu grade and pH. Performance measurements of large-diameter circular saws were conducted on eight different carbonate rocks in marble factories located in some areas of Turkey. Rock samples were collected from these factories for laboratory tests. Uniaxial compressive strength, tensile strength and impact strength were determined in the laboratory. The brittleness of B3 (the ratio of compressive strength minus tensile strength to compressive strength plus tensile strength), the brittleness of B5 (the product of percentage fines in the impact strength test and compressive strength) and the brittleness of B8 (half of the product of compressive strength and tensile strength) were calculated from the test results. Hourly slab productions were correlated with brittleness indexes. It was concluded that sawability of carbonate rocks can best be predicted from the brittleness of B8.

G. H. HENDERSON INTRODUCTION It is a pleasure to have read Mr Schuman's wide ranging and highly informative paper and also to congratulate him. Before proceeding to give views on the use and preservation of coal in South Africa, it is perhaps apposite to look at the South African scene on the world canvas. Mr Schuman's figures in his Table I are highly revealing. The Table shows expected consumption, export and import demand in the year 1980 by the continents of the world. The Republic of South Africa is shown as one of only four exporting countries at that date, although in the interim, Australia has become an exporter and will continue to grow as an exporter of coal. Huge fields have been proved in recent years. There is reason to think that for some years, coal and its economical uses have been under-estimated. The importation of oil carries a constant question mark and the exciting possibilities expressed in the uses of Dranium a decade ago for power generation, appear to have met with some setback. Present indications are that breederreactors will be delayed until about 1990. The capital cost of such reactors, too, is enormous. By 1980 it has been estimated that 20 per cent of the energy required by the leading ten nations of the world will come from nuclear power, but 80 per cent would then remain for fossil fuels and hydro generation. COAL DEMAND AND USAGE It is of interest to record that coal production in all the countries of Europe has declined markedly in the last 25 years. This is due to competition from oil, gas and nuclear power and also for sociological reasons; but there are signs that efforts will be made to resuscitate, at least in some measure, the mining of coking coals for which there is a strong and growing demand. Possibly all hard coal now mined in Germany has coking properties and that country is self-sufficient in this commodity. Germany might perhaps consider selling coking coal to her neighbours and importing additional coal for power-raising purposes. It has been frequently stated in American publications that the coal reserves of the D.S.A. are sufficient for 1 000 years. What that means, I do not know, but it is at least an indication that America has huge reserves of coal. Domestic and export demand in the U.S.A. in 1968 exceeded production for the first time. In 1969, the United States' output amounted to some 556 million tons, an increase of less than 2 per cent on the previous year. The output achieved fell short of demand, domestic and export, by more than 7 000 000 tons. This has caused and is continuing to cause anxiety in the U.S.A. In many countries young men for a number of reasons, largely environmental and social, are not coming forward in sufficient numbers for mining requirements and the same pattern has revealed itself in the Republic. This is, indeed, alarming because mining men in large numbers will be required to meet the estimated tonnage requirements set out in the following Table: It is difficult to visualise the replacement of these coal requirements either by oil or by nuclear fuels. The coal must be mined and men are required for the purpose. Unless a greater section of the population is allowed to participate in the more responsible aspects of mining, there is a serious likelihood that demand will not be matched by output. In addition to local demand, a lively export trade is possible. Exports are dependent on the future capacity of the South African Railways and Harbours and on Government policy. An export figure of 10000000 tons per year during the decade can be visualised and this figure would raise total estimated sales production to a figure of over 100 000 000 tons in 1980.
