The extended weakness of dollar-denominated commodity prices during the past four years has often been attributed to, among other factors, the strong rise in the value of the dollar, and many U. S. producers have hoped for a recovery in metals and minerals prices once the dollar weakened in foreign exchange markets. The recent turnaround in dollar strength may put this view to the test quite soon. Hence a review of the role of exchange rate changes in the determination of the prices of world-traded metals and minerals may be timely. This paper has three parts. Part I reviews the recent summary record of price movements in commodity and foreign exchange markets. Part 11 reviews the distinct ways in which exchange rate changes influence the supply and demand sides of a representative commodity market. Part III then more closely examines copper and aluminum prices to highlight the potential differences in the effects of exchange rate changes for commodities whose production is dominated by geology and commodities which are processing-dominated. The paper also contemplates the likely implications of these differences for commodity prices in the case of a decline in the trade-weighted dollar. The evidence suggests that the degree of recovery for dollar- measured commodity prices may be very different for differing goods. And it may be the case that some commodities whose prices appear to have been most affected by exchange rate influences may show the least recovery in response to a fall in the trade- weighted dollar.

Rapidly rising gas and oil prices and the falling quality of coal is forcing energy users in many parts of the world to consider the application of low grade fuel, particularly coal, for steam raising and power generation. However, the use of such low grade coal is normally resisted by the consumer because of operational problems associated with high ash content, sulfur emission and, in some instances, slagging problems caused by low melting temperature constituents in the ash. Recently developed technology involving 'fluidized bed combustion' offers a potential solution to these operational problems. Much of the early work was conducted in Britain, where rig tests were commenced during the early 1960's. This has led on to the successful conversion and operation of a fluidized bed fired industrial boiler at the Renfrew works of Babcock & Wilcox Ltd. Orders for the first commercial boilers incorporating this technology have recently been announced. Significant development work on fluidized combustion is now being undertaken in various parts of the world, in particular North America, Germany and Japan, and the first large scale units are under construction or being commissioned. This paper concentrates on the development of the technology in Britain, outlines the reasons for applying fluidized bed combustion and de-scribes its application at atmospheric pressure for steam raising and at elevated pressure for power generation . Coal Processing Consultants is a Partnership between the National Coal Board and Babcock & Wilcox Ltd. of Britain and has been established in order to provide technical advice and economic evaluations on all aspects of coal processing and utilization. A review of the evolution of the North American sulfur market's structure serves to dramatize the kinds of changes that the market is undergoing at the present time. In 1970, the U.S. accounted for 23 percent of world sulfur production. This share has not declined dramatically--to 21 percent in 1993--but the U.S. developed into a substantial net importer of sulfur in the past 25 years. U.S. output was based on large deposits of native sulfur in the western part of the Gulf Coast region with production by the Frasch mining process. Producers of Frasch, or on-purpose sulfur, have historically absorbed cyclical fluctuations in sulfur demand. Two major changes in the North American market from that time to now have been the introduction of increasingly large quantities of by-product sulfur from petroleum refining and natural gas processing operations in the U.S. and Canada, and that Canadian producers have become the marginal supply source for U.S. sulfur consumers.

This is a summary of what has happened to the domestic production of two industrial minerals vital to a healthy US economy: fluorspar and barite. A few years ago we were self-sufficient in both minerals and good ore reserves still exist. FLUORSPAR Some 9% of the fluorspar presently being consumed in the US is imported, whereas the use of fluorspar has not declined proportionately. Several factors can be mentioned.

This paper is presented from the viewpoint of the mill operator and maintenance supervisor. Its purpose is to highlight the things that have been accomplished by the mill designers to lighten the load for the maintenance superintendent and to reduce the overall costs for the plant operator. The complexity of plant design, the civil and structural engineering problems encountered when the satisfactory maintenance layout is accomplished are appreciated, and the writer is fully aware of the complexities of these problems. However, it is not the purpose of this particular paper to dwell upon these problems, nor to emphasize or de-emphasize the problems of the civil, mechanical and electrical engineers. It is simply that the paper will attempt to review what these people have accomplished in spite of the many technical problems. This paper then is prepared with the operator and maintenance people?s viewpoint. What is their definition of design for maintenance? It is the writer's interpretation that the various design concepts which mean improved maintenance are such items as (I) maintenance areas, (2) laydown space for maintenance materials in specific maintenance jobs, (3) the inclusion of bridge cranes in the plant and specific design of the craneways to accomplish flexibilities for the cranes, and (4) the location of the piece of equipment to allow maintenance people to work around the equipment - - - this specifically includes the orientation of the particular piece of equipment.

Microwave pretreatment is one of the emerging technologies which have been reported as having potential economic benefits for the processing of amenable ores. The application of microwave pretreatment to the processing of refractory and finely disseminated ores is of great interest as the technology can potentially reduce high comminution costs and improve mineral liberation. Sized ore samples were subjected to microwave irradiation at power levels varying from 1 to 5 kW over exposure times of between 1 and 6minutes in order to determine the influence of heating rate on mineral transformation, ground product size distribution and mineral liberation. The microwave irradiated samples were ground and subsequently floated. A comparison is made with non-microwave treated samples. Flotation grade and recovery show a strong dependence on the microwave absorption characteristics of the mineral components of the ore, in the following decreasing order -sphalerite, galena, and lastly chalcopyrite.

In order to provide a reference framework for discussing the applicability of drilling technology to shaft construction in coal mining ventures, it is meaningful to review the history and nature of United States coal mines relative to shafting. Coal mining in the United States is characterized by shallow depths relative to most of the coal mining world. While the trend is toward deeper and deeper mines, many new mines have shaft depth less than 800 feet, and a large number of operating mines are drift or outcrop mines utilizing shafts for ventilation and portals. In the past, shafts of 200-300 feet have been commonly constructed. The use of conventionally sunk shafts at present and in the past is due in part to the shallow shaft length required, favoring conventionally sunk shafts. Another factor is that large shafts are required for multipurpose and production shafts. A third has been the practice of utilizing shaft construction contractors who had been until recently very competitive with raise drilled shafts at shallow to moderate depths. Recently, however, the costs of conventionally sunk shafts have skyrocketed. Too, more shafts are being required. Several factors are responsible among which are: (1) The increasing depth of shaft required for new mines and for shafts in advance of old mines. This significantly affects unit costs, e.g. $/yd3,of conventionally sunk shafts. Moreover, more gas is encountered in the shaft sinking operation.

The processes involved in the concentration of magnetite ore with process water as the aqueous medium can have a strong influence on the surface properties of the magnetite particles. In this study, different leaching methods, as well as zeta potential measurements, were used to examine the major easily accessible ions on the particle surfaces and their effect on the surface charge. The results show that the enrichment of elements on the surface of the particles appears early in the refinement process. Ca was enriched up to 15 times and Si up to 50 times compared to what pore water alone would have given. The leaching experiments also showed that the addition of water glass increased the surface enrichment of Si and that the collector might hinder desorption of Ca. An alkali leaching method was evaluated, which showed that Si was much more enriched than S and Cl. Zeta potential measurements on synthetic magnetite particles showed that process water resulted in zeta potentials different from the potentials measured for these particles in aqueous calcium and silicate solutions. Therefore, it is important to consider the complexity of the process water when making predictions about the properties of the particle surfaces in the final magnetite concentrate, which most studies do not. Zeta potential measurements were also used to rule out a strong influence from organic matter in the process water on the magnetite zeta potential.

"A fundamental understanding of flame propagation characteristics through and around obstacles is needed to accurately model methane driven longwall coal mine explosions originating or propagating in the gob. Experimental investigations of methane flames in horizontal cylindrical reactors with simulated gob (i.e. rock piles) were carried out alongside coupled Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) and combustion simulations. Stoichiometric methane-air mixtures were ignited in semi-open reactor vessels of 5cm, 9.5cm and 71cm diameter, all with a fixed length to diameter (L/D) ratio of 8.6. This was done both with empty reactors and also with a rock pile placed at the open end of the reactor. The rock pile length to reactor length ratio was fixed at 0.3, and the rock pile height to reactor diameter ratio was fixed at 0.33 for all reactors. The smaller two reactor experiments were modeled with ANSYS Fluent in 2D. Experimental results indicate that for this geometry a similar acceleration mode occurs across scales: that the flame speeds up an average of 40% as it passes over a rock pile with this profile. The model is able to capture several important features of the experimental results, including the significant increase in velocity, the speedup ahead of the rock pile, and the leveling off of the empty tube flame front propagation velocity. INTRODUCTION Explosions in underground coal mines are among the largest industrial explosions, known to result in the rapid combustion of 20m3 of fuel gas or more [1,2] Coal beds hold methane gas under pressure, and when the pressure is relieved through mining activity some of this methane is released. The methane then mixes with ventilation air and, if not sufficiently diluted, may form a combustible mixture, which may result in an explosion. Several large coal mine explosions have occurred around the world recently. These include the 2014 Soma Mine disaster in Turkey that killed 301 people [3], and the 2009 Heilongjiang Mine explosion in China that killed 108 [4]. Other recent mine explosions, including the 2010 disaster at the Upper Big Branch mine that caused 29 fatalities [5], have demonstrated that explosive gases can accumulate and ignite within and around the gob area of a longwall coal mine and then expand into the active mining face and nearby areas, endangering workers and equipment. If enough combustible gas is involved, the initial flame can accelerate, eventually transitioning from deflagration to detonation [6]. Researchers are developing a fundamental understanding of the evolution of the explosion process from the laminar kernel to the fully turbulent regime, and its propagation through obstacles such as those found in the gob. Researchers also studied the initial development of methane flames and the potential for the development of a detonation."

An examination was conducted on the impact of roof conditions and the mining cycle in determining a representative respirable mass concentration at the mid-shearer location on a longwall panel. Multiple personal gravimetric dust samplers, operated at a flow rate of 2.0 lpm, were used at different locations along the face to isolate the concentrations and variances associated with good and bad roof conditions under both the cutting and cleaning mode of operation. The number of samples needed to estimate the population variance at a given confidence level was analyzed. In addition, the statistical analysis showed that the coefficient of variation of dust concentrations at different locations and under different conditions ranged from 0.185 to 0.475, with an average value of 0.283. The estimates of the average dust concentration for a shift and the variance of the dust concentrations were calculated. A total of 48 data points were available for an [a x b] factorial ANOVA (analysis of variance). The estimates of the variance components were determined. The results from F-tests indicated that both the roof conditions and mining operations had a significant effect on the respirable dust concentration. There was no significant interaction effect between mining operations and roof conditions. In conclusion, this study shows that not only should sampling and analytical errors be considered in determining the required number of samples for a good estimate of the long-range exposures of miners, but also fluctuations of concentrations due to mining operations and geological conditions should be taken into account.

An analysis of screen design options on the operating efficiency of secondary crushing plants has been conducted using a dynamic computer model. The model allows for the simulation of a wide variety of crushing circuits and can be run on either a microcomputer (IBM PC/XT) or a large time-sharing mainframe computer. Size reduction and separation characteristics of crushers and screens are based on standard manufacturer design and performance data. Input/output routines are available in tabular, alarm or strip chart recorder modes to facilitate operation of the program. A number of alternate circuit designs are compared to show the influence of surge capacity, screen size and area, screen deck location, and closed side crusher settings on the operation of a 10,000 ton per day plant. The program is currently in use at Queen's University to teach plant operations and control. It has potential to be a valuable tool for operator training.

"This paper characterizes quarterly LME copper price fundamentals from 1995 to 2011 by analyzing the transformation of the market mechanism based on structural change perspective. Using chow test for structural change based on the least square multiple regression, we divide the price fluctuation into: Stable price period (1995Q3-1999Q2), Low stable price period (1999Q3 – 2003Q3) and Price fluctuation period (2003Q4 – 2011Q2). The results show the existence of structural breaks disproves the investigation of the full sample period as a whole. In different structural breakpoints the main drivers of copper prices changes and their impact are significantly different. Moreover, the paper examines the role of speculation in copper price fluctuations.Introduction The rise in commodities price volatility and financial and economic crisis have led to questions over the organisation of futures and physical commodities markets. Spikes in commodity prices and volatility have coincided with a surge in financial speculators in the commodity markets inspiring a polarised and hotly debate among academics and practitioners about the role of investors in the development of physical markets. In his seminal work Kaldor (1939) focused primarily on whether speculative activity in the futures markets reduces the variance of commodity spot prices. Yet, part of the literature finds that the introduction of futures contracts destabilizes the spot market. IMF (2006) studied commodities boom and its causes concluding that there is little support for the hypothesis that speculative activity affects either price levels over the long run or price swings in the short-run. The impact of speculative activity on commodity prices remains a highly contentious topic. Other market analysts take the view that the supply and demand for physical commodities remain the major determinants of market trends (Krugman 2008). It is the aim of this study to contribute to the literature by examining the drivers of copper price changes from a structural change perspective. In this context we are attempting to answer to: What are the main drivers leading to copper price fluctuations? Are these factors having the same effect in different periods or not? It is meaningful to understand drivers of copper prices and thereby, their fluctuations because it will help developing countries depending on copper export to anticipate market situation and avoid bad economic development challenges that can result from price fluctuations. Moreover, this can ensure sustainable mineral supply."

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), Spokane Research Laboratory (SRL), investigated a means to evaluate the potential impact of surface conditions above underground mines on emergency response activities. Recent events have highlighted the need to conduct critical emergency operations on the surface above underground work areas. Accessibility and usability of the surface, such as the ability to drill holes or deploy seismic monitoring or through the earth communications systems, are an important consideration for emergency response planning. This paper identifies critical surface conditions such as: surface waters, valley fill, highways, railroads and significant structures that must be considered in emergency response planning and in the conduct of emergency operations as they relate specifically to the seismic detection of trapped underground miners. Results of case studies indicate a need to consider the impact surface conditions may have on emergency response capabilities.

Coal, as one of the vital sources of energy in China, has raised widespread concerns regarding its safety issues amidst the country’s economic growth driven by coal. To address this concern, this study employed the Kuznets curve, multiple linear regression, and data envelopment analysis models to investigate the impact of Chinese coal economic development on coal mine deaths from 1992 to 2021. The findings revealed a clear correlation between the Chinese coal economy and coal mine deaths. Specifically, per capita coal output, the death rate per million coal tons, and the death rate per hundred thousand persons exhibited positive, negative, and negative correlations, respectively, with the growth of coal income over the past three decades. Moreover, when the coal workers and coal output factors remained unchanged, the income of coal demonstrated a negative correlation with future changes in coal mine deaths. Notably, with three decades of coal economy development, substantial improvements in coal mine safety have been observed in China. Consequently, this research provides valuable insights for formulating safety measures and policies in coal mines across different economic levels, as well as a useful framework for assessing safety development in the coal industry.

The European Economic Community (The Common Market) is now shifting from I a coal oriented to an oil oriented economy. The proportion of energy supplied by oil has increased from only 13% in 1950 to 38% in 1962, and will approach 50% by 1970. In the past five years Common Market petroleum demand has in- creased 15% per year compared with only 3% per year in the United States. This rapid shift to oil can be explained by looking at oil's competition, First; there is simply not enough other energy - European coal, natural gas and hydro-electric power - to meet the demand, Secondly, oil?s primary competing energy in the Common Market is coal, and Community coal is high-priced - it costs more than two and a half times as much as U. S, coal at the pithead. The third reason for the shift to oil is consumer preference for the ease of handling, convenience and cleanliness of liquid fuels. As these reasons suggest, much of the shift to oil and the resulting growth in demand would have occurred whether or not the Common Market organization had existed. On the other hand, the Common Market has stimulated the use of oil by causing a higher rate of energy consumption, and oil has been the beneficiary of most of this growth.

INTRODUCTION For overland conveyors of several kilometres length and as well as wide for conveyors designed for high mass flows, the cost for the conveyor belting share is 40% to 50% of the invested cost 173. The German Standard DIN 22101 is used for calculation and dimensioning of - conveyor belts and belt conveyor components. Developments in rubber technology and conveyor belt design required a revision of the standard released in 1982 121, which was published in August 2001 131. New research results and publications 16-9, 13-15] led to a better understanding of the material behaviour and their influences on conveyor belts. Test and calculation methods have been established to determine the most important parameters which are related to the performance of a conveyor belt line. These parameters are • The running resistance of the idlers • The indentation resistance of the belt • The dynamic splice efficiency • The distribution of belt load in the splices, transition zones and on pulleys. As a result, new rubber compounds with low indentation losses allow the use of reduced friction coefficients and thus lead to reduced power consumption, smaller drives and lower belt tensions. The deeper understanding of the flux of forces within belt splices led to both optimised splice design and optimised rubber compounds which significantly improve the dynamic splice efficiency. Therefore, in accordance with the standard, the benefits of these technologies and the better understanding of material behaviour allow a reduction of belt strength still maintaining sufficient safety factors. Thus engineers are enabled to calculate belt tensions more exactly and users are encouraged to pay more attention to starting and braking techniques. DETERMINATION OF DRIVE FORCE According to the DIN standards the resistance to motion generally has to be determined for each different section of the belt conveyor including upper and lower run separately. The necessary drive power P is calculated as [ ] with v as the conveying speed. The total of all resistances to motion of carry and return run can be determined as [ ] FHo and FHu are the primary resistances consisting of the running resistances of the idlers, the indentation resistance of the belt, the fulling of the conveyed material and the flexure of the belt. While indentation resistance and idler resistance are measurable, they have been deter- mined to be responsible for up to 70% of the primary resistances covered by FH. Further FN is the secondary resistance that covers, for example, the resistance of feeding points and scrapers. Fa are the total slope resistances and Fs is the total of all special resistances, resulting, for example, from belt steering devices. These three resistances should be neglected in the following discussion. For conveyors where a determination of the substantial parts of the resistances to motion is not possible, according to the new DIN standard [31 a determination of the drive power is acceptable by using the fictitious friction factor) [ ] In this formula the index i identifies the individual section of the conveyor, 1 is the length of the section and MR, MG and ML are the related masses of the idlers, the belt and the load in kg/m. Past EPA groundwater monitoring programs required that contamination not leave the boundaries of a disposal facility. New regulations under the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) require that once hazardous waste constituents are detected beyond the limits of the disposal area, a program to define the rate and extent of contaminant migration must be instituted. Future regulations are likely to include even more stringent groundwater protection criteria. The implications of both the existing and probable future groundwater protection and monitoring requirements in terms of using geologic containment as a means of disposing of hazardous waste are explored in this paper.

Hanford Reservation, in the State of Washington, with its deep basalt formations, is one of the three sites recommended by the Department of Energy for detailed investigations in order to select the first nuclear waste repository in the United States. Information obtained from several deep bore-holes drilled at Hanford indicates that the underground facility can be developed in one of the major basalt flows belonging to the Grande Ronde Formation in the Columbia Plateau, at depths greater than 3200 ft. One of the main concerns in the underground repository design is the achievement of acceptable environmental conditions during the development and the operation of the repository. For this, ventilation and air-conditioning are of prime importance and should be fully addressed. Besides the factors that determine the airflow requirements to meet the personnel and equipment operation needs, there are two major concerns that impact on the ventilation system design: the temperature of the in situ virgin basalt rock and the influx of groundwater. These two factors are related by the fact that the groundwater has the same temperature as the rock itself and they both constitute main sources of heat underground. Current information indicates that the temperature of the virgin rock at a depth of around 990 m (3250 ft) is 52°C (12S°F). However, there are some indications that the rock temperature at the selected horizon might be higher. This paper addresses the impact of the virgin rock temperature on the ventilation system and air-cooling requirements. Graphs with heat loads and cooling required for different rock temperatures have been prepared for a given model and network, using computer techniques for simulating the climatic parameters.

Factors such as percent sol- ids, addition and/or removal of fines, slurry mill filling level, specific material oriented breakage properties, chemical additions, etc. are discussed with a number of illustrating examples. This paper is specifically aimed at developing rheologically related operating guide- lines for plant engineers so that improved operating conditions can be selected.
