Field sampling was conducted in Lake Junin, Peru in order to assess the post-depositional reactivity of the highly contaminated lake sediments. High resolution profiles of dissolved Fe, Mn, SO42- and H2S across the sediment-water interface illustrate that the organic-rich sediments in the main basin become anoxic within several millimetres of the sediment-water interface. These permanently submerged deposits in the main basin serve as a diffusive sink for dissolved Zn and Cu. Conversely, the periodically unsaturated deposits in shallow areas are characterized by the remobilization of Zn and Cu in the deep acidic (pH < 4) pore waters, resulting in the release of these metals to the overlying water column.

Are safety concerns justified regarding the potential for a gas explosion due to recirculation when a scrubber is used on a continuous miner? The role of a respirable dust scrubber on a continuous miner section using blowing face ventilation is examined in this paper and the above question answered. Methane control using high efficiency scrubbers coupled with blowing face ventilation is promoted.

Smallbore tunnels in urban environments often present more technical and managerial problems than major large diameter schemes carried out for transportion, water supply and hydro-electric facilities. The 1.8 km Bath scheme was designed for construction in tunnel using the pipe jacking system. Unforeseen ground conditions meant other techniques were needed during construction. The paper describes the problems encountered and how they were overcome.

Gentlemen, I am pleased to address this gathering of engineers and operation managers representing a large and important segment of the metal and nonmetallic mining industry. Since you know from the printed program that the theme of my paper is the furthering of safety in open pit mines, perhaps you will have guessed that I will also comment upon the image created in the public mind by the industry&apos;s safety record and the potential consequences thereof in national health and safety legislation. Operators of surface mines have some cause to congratulate themselves on the basis of figures issued by the national safety council which show that lost-time accidents per-million-man-hours in surface mining (11.18), is lower than that of all other mining. Moreover, the accident frequency in surface mining is only slightly above the median accident rate for all American industry (8.87). That is a good record.

The Endeavour Colliery is operated by Powercoal Pty Ltd. It is located in the Central Coast of New South Wales, Australia. The mine has been in operation for about 30 years, producing around 600,000 tons of export coal annually from two production sections. On June 28. 1995, an explosion occurred underground in the 300 Panel at approximately 9:50 a.m.. There were thirty miners underground at the time of the explosion, all of whom were safely evacuated. From June 29 through July 10, personnel did not enter the mine. However, gas samples of the mine atmosphere were obtained from underground monitoring stations and analyzed. Samples were also obtained from boreholes that were drilled from an adjacent mine. On July 10, the atmosphere at the underground monitoring locations and at the boreholes appeared stable with minimal risk of combustion occurring underground. Plans were developed to begin the recovery of the underground workings. The recovery of the underground workings was completed on July 13. The underground investigation of the explosion began on July 14. The investigation was conducted by the New South Wales Department of Mineral Resources. Technical assistance was pro- vided by the United States Department of Labor&apos;s Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA).

In spite of the progress made by geostatistical theory over the years, evaluation of low grade open pit gold deposits continues to be challenging. Many Carlin type deposits are modelled from exploration drilling spaced on 10C foot centers. From these drill holes, 50 by 50 by 20 foot blocks containing about 4000 tons of material are estimated. The block size is a compromise between being large enough for a good geostatistical estimation and being small enough for practical pit limit analysis and mine planning. Most of these gold deposits are highly variable and include ore and waste zones that are too small to be properly defined from exploration drilling information. Because of this, selective mining is controlled by sampling closely spaced blast holes where the density can be as high as 50 blast holes per exploration drill hole intercept. Figure 1 illustrates an example of the ore/waste contact definition before and after blast hole sampling. With exploration information only, a tentative ore/waste contact can be drawn between the exploration blocks.

Pará Pigmentos S.A. (PPSA) is an association between the Brazilian companies CVRD and CADAM, Mitsubishi Corporation of Japan, and the IFC (World Bank) created in 1992 in order to recover kaolin from Rio Capim deposit, northern Brazil. Commercial production at PPSA started in August 1996 using a process comprising mining and beneficiation at the mine site, pumping through a pipeline and drying/loading at the port site on the Amazon river estuary. Presently, all PPSA production is concentrated on 82% <2um, high-brightness coating clay shipped in bulk. In this paper, a detailed description of the development of PPSA beneficiation process is presented. The results of laboratory and pilot plant studies under- taken to develop alternative grades of clay, such as delaminated and calcined kaolins, are also discussed.

The recovery of gold from a high grade telluride/sulphide flotation concentrate was investigated. Conventional cyanidation resulted in very slow rates of gold extraction. Historically, the refractory nature of tellurides has been overcome by fine grinding, the use of excess lime and long leach times. In some instances, pre­oxidation of the tellurides has also been necessary, to render the gold soluble in cyanide solutions. The former conditions did improve the rate of gold extraction from the present sample, but final recovery was still unacceptable. Chemical oxidation of the tellurides and leaching with oxygen improved gold recovery further. However, it was found that simple modifications to the cyanidation conditions overcame the detrimental effects of the complex chemistry involved in leaching a telluride concentrate. The incorporation of a solution change, or the application of a carbon-in-leach procedure increased the recovery of gold to over 97 percent in 96 hours. In every case, leaching was enhanced by the addition of lead salts.

The extraction of gold from chloride solutions by ion exchange is examined. It is shown that at initial gold concentrations between 1 - 5 ppm, 20 g/l C1- and pH 5, the kinetics of loading on weak base resins are slightly slower than those observed with activated charcoal. Equilibrium loading of auric chloride varies considerably as a function of pH from one resin to another. For all of the resins studied, nearly complete gold extraction was achieved between pH 2 and pH 6.5. Sodium hypochlorite was found to exhibit a slight effect on the equilibrium loading of gold chloride.

A novel liquid-liquid separation for the recovery of free or liberated gold from mixtures of fine particles was evaluated. The separation, conducted at ambient temperature and a pressure of about 1000 psi a, was based on the difference in wettability of precious metals and minerals. Contact angle results indicated that in the presence of water and liquid CO2, gold, platinum and silver had intermediate wettability. Minerals such as quartz and magnetite, however, were hydrophilic. Therefore fine gold particles. -325 mesh, that were mixed with water and liquid CO2 dispersed in the CO2 or agglomerated at the H2O-CO2 interface while the minerals tended to remain in the aqueous phase. Best results were obtained when these fine gold particles were liberated, were not agglomerated in slimes, were not adhering to minerals, and were not coated with minerals.

Wet magnetic separation methods for the recovery of hematite and chromite fines and ultrafines were investigated. These methods included wet high-intensity and high-gradient magnetic separation, carrier or "piggy-hack" magnetic separation, magnetic field-induced aggregation and magnetic seeding. This investigation indicated that wet magnetic separation is more efficient for fines and ultrafines. This investigation also indicated that other methods can be used to enhance the particle aggregation and/or the magnetic response. The magnetic behavior of these minerals with respect to the magnetizing field, temperature and particle size is also presented.

A study of some variables affecting the recovery of molybdenum from oxidized molybdenum minerals was made. The effects of variations in contact time, temperature, pulp density, particle size, and solvent concentration on the recovery of molybdenum using acid and alkaline solvents were investigated. Chemical analyses, screen analyses and microscopic examinations were made and the presence of important elements determined. A hydrometallurgical method was developed to recover the molybdenum from the oxidized molybdenum ore by simultaneous dissolution of the molybdenum with sulfuric acid, adsorption on activated charcoal and flotation of the charcoal. The molybdenum was extracted from the activated charcoal with sodium hydroxide, precipitated with calcium hydroxide as calcium molybdate and this regenerated sodium hydroxide for additional stripping. A solvent extraction method, using mines, was also studied to recover molybdenum from both alkaline and acid molybdenum solutions. Satisfactory results were obtained.

The population growth, urban and industry development cause the increased pollution with different substances, which contain phosphorus. It contributes to the increased demand for its compounds, increasing the use of its natural resources, which is considered to be the most accessible source. The forecasts regarding the world natural reserves of phosphorus deposits are saying that more than 50% of resources used currently will be exhausted within next 60-70 years (Steen, 1998). European Union formulated its goals regarding the waste management in 1990. Its main rules include prevention of waste generation, recycling, reuse of waste as the raw materials in technological processes, separate collection and optimization of final removal. The phosphorus recovery from waste is realized currently in many ways: directly from the waste water stream in sewage-treatment plant, from the sewage sludge, from animal waste, industrial waste and other emissions from industry (Przewrocki et al., 2004). According to the rules of cleaner production the waste should be treated as the source of resources for the production of products with full value (Kowalski, 1998).

A patent-applied-for process has been developed in which zinc chloride is extracted by tributyl phosphate in kerosine, and stripped with ethylene glycol or ammoniated ethylene glycol. The anhydrous zinc chloride is precipitated from the glycol as the ammine and zinc chloride is prepared by thermal decomposition with recycle of ammonia. The process permits the production of high grade zinc from scraps and drosses. Its applicability to the recycling of zinc will be illustrated.

INTRODUCTION Construction of tunnels in urban areas, especially reclaimed areas, pose many problems. The Red Hook Intercepting Sewer Tunnel, Contract 1A is a portion of the Red Hook Water Pollution Control Project located along the Brooklyn waterfront in New York City. This contract required the construction of a 2620 meter long (8600 L.F.), 3 meter (10-foot) diameter soft ground tunnel, eight Tunnel Manholes, nine Regulator structures, four Diversion and Tidegate structures and 765 meters (2500 L.F.) of branch intercepting sewers of diameters between .30 meters (12 inches) and 1.8 meters (72 inches). The construction contract bid price was $62 million with a duration of three years. The tunnel route crosses over five sets of operational twin cast iron subway tubes with clearances ranging from 4.3 meters (14 feet) to as small as 0.35 meters (14 inches). The route of the tunnel traverses historically interesting areas which have been reclaimed over the last 200 years. This paper is a case history describing the contractor&apos;s methods utilized to successfully advance the work through the above problem areas. Modern microprocessor systems make it possible to use several variables to anticipate changes in the process and to react with responses before upsets can be magnified by the process or by control action. Through tighter control, "insurance" can be eliminated from process set points without affecting product quality. In actual operation with a traveling grate furnace this control philosophy has produced savings of up to 20% in fuel consumption and 8% in fan power usage while producing a more consistent quality product.

A research project supported by the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources and the Iron Ore Cooperative Research Committee was undertaken to reduce the dissolution of fluoride into process water during taconite processing. Leach tests were conducted using rod mill feed samples and water containing varying concentrations of calcium and sodium. Laboratory liberation grinds were performed to evaluate fluoride rejection during grinding and magnetic separation. Tube furnace tests were conducted to evaluate fluoride volatilization during pellet induration. The results indicate that fluoride concentration of process water is a function of both calcium and sodium concentration in process water. It appears that less than 1 percent of the fluoride present in rod mill feed will dissolve in process water during grinding. More than 90 percent of the fluoride present in rod mill feed is rejected with tailings during size reduction and magnetic separation. The furnace tests demonstrate that bentonite and fluxstone (calcite and dolomite) addition to taconite concentrate during pellet production increases the amount of fluoride that volatilizes during induration. Lime hydrate addition to pellets decreases the amount of fluoride that volatilizes during pellet induration. During acid pellet production approximately three times more fluoride enters the water during induration-off-gas scrubbing than during grinding. When fluxed pellets are produced three to eight times more fluoride enters the water during off-gas scrubbing than during taconite grinding.
