Harima Works is operating as the zinc and lead simultaneous smelter utilizing the imperial Smelting Process. The smelter commenced its operation in 1966 with designed capacities of 3500 t/M of zinc and 1500 t/M of lead. After that, owing to the results of progressive developments and improvements in operating efficiency and equipments, it has doubled its production figure. This report reviews our recent developments carried out from 1983 to 1985. Firstly, the furnace bottom design was modified for the purpose of reducing carbon consumption ratio. As a result, shaft operating condition has been satisfactory and carbon consumption ratio was improved by 2%, in addition, furnace zinc production was increased by about 8%. Secondly, the oxygen enriched operation at sintering machine was tested from July 1984 to June 1985, in order to increase the sinter productivity, and to solve the capacity imbalance between sinter plant and ISF. As the test result, it was found out that sulfur elimination rate was increased by approx 10% with the oxygen enrichment of 500 Nm3/hr.

The literature of mine ventilation is very diverse in nature, widely interdisciplinary, and extremely international in scope. Important references are found in indexes, abstracts, government documents, technical reports, journals, conference and symposia proceedings, and monographs. In this decade computer searches of the literature have greatly aided researchers in finding needed items. There is, however, no convenient summary of recent English language literature in coal and non-coal mine ventilation. This paper attempts to fill that gap in the literature. Because of the worldwide provenance of the subject and the attendant publication deluge, this paper covers only current English language publications on ventilation. The writers have examined the field's English language abstracts, indexes, bibliographies, periodicals, technical reports, books, and symposia and conference, proceedings. The survey also considers the field's most important bibliographic data bases. It should be noted that addresses for many of the literature sources listed in the paper are given in the section on literature and data base information sources.

The North American-based mining engineer needs to understand the differences that exist between mechanical mining or boring machines built on this continent and those built in Europe. The differences Ere most clearly seen when machines for large-sized openings--about 15 feet high-are considered. This report will focus on the innovations of European origin. The rock-breaking tool, drag bit, or roller cone that is efficient for a particular project is related directly to the strength of the rock involved. This strength is generally stated in reference to the rock's unconfined compressivee strength in pounds per square inch (psi) although it is well recognized that a rock's shear strength is also important. Compressive strength has been adopted because it is simple to test for and provides a convenient comparison. Table 1 relates cutter type to compressive strength and indicates the general nature of the machine innovation devel¬oped in Europe.

The recently completed In-Pit Crushing and Conveying Project at Phelps Dodge's Morenci Mine is rated among the world's leading materials handling projects. The operation involves the crushing and transport of more than 109,000 tonnes per day of copper ore, utilizing regenerative conveyors capable of providing over 5.5 megawatts (7,000 hp) of equivalent electrical energy. INTRODUCTION The City of Oslo together with the neighbor municipalities, Baerum and Asker, are presently building a jointly owned sewage treatment plant located on the west side of the inner Oslofjord. The project is scheduled for completion late 1981. Because the location of the treatment plant is at a distance of about 20 miles (30 km) from the city center, a discharge of more than 13 yds 3/sec (10 m3/sec.) of sewage and storm water will have to be transported over considerable distances. The topography of the area and the geological conditions early indicated that the only realistic transport method had to be through tunnels. As planning proceeded, full face tunnel boring emerged more and more as a favorable alternative to conventional drill and blast medhods. Today the scheme comprises nearly 25 miles (40 km) of tunnels being excavated by full face tunnel borers. In addition a number of access tunnels and cross cuts are to be excavated by conventional methods.

Work done by Foster-Miller Associates under a Bureau of Mines research contract has developed methods to increase significantly the amount of fresh air that reaches the front of a continuous-mining machine. The emphasis was on removing methane build- ups that occur at the cutterhead. Using a full-scale plywood mockup of a coal mine working face area, the study showed that in many instances only about 20 pct of the fresh air heading towards an exhaust brattice or tubing actually gets to within 1 ft (0.3m) of the face. The key to providing more air at the face is to enhance and move forward the natural airflow pattern. This change in the natural airflow pattern can be accomplished by taking advantage of the air-moving abilities of the conventional water spray. It was discovered that if all the water sprays on the machine were realigned, then ventilation efficiencies of 70 pct or more were achieved regularly. This meant that if 9,000 cfm (4.2 m3/s) was entering the brattice, at least 6,300 cfm (3.0 m3/s) of this was reaching to within 1 ft (0.3m) of the face. This water spray realignment consists of placing a few nozzles on the side of the machine opposite the curtain and also tilting the front sprays slightly towards the curtain side. Recently, two underground tests and two additional independent laboratory tests of the water "Spray Fan" have been completed. In general, they have confirmed the performance of the Spray Fan system, but they also have provided useful information as to its difficulties and limitations.

The Larox Power PF Pressure Filter has been developed to meet the challenges of ever increasing output tonnages demanded by the minerals processing industry. This paper will highlight recent experiences at the Rudna Copper Concentrator in Poland, the Escondida Copper Concentrator in Chile and some large zinc concentrators in Australia. Detailed maintenance and operating cost information will be disclosed. Emphasis will be placed on economics on scale gained from higher machine throughputs.

Recent investigations conducted by Federal, State, and industry organizations suggest that significant coalbed gas resources may exist in the Cretaceous and Paleocene-Eocene coal beds of the Gulf of Mexico Coastal Plain. Exploration efforts have focused on three areas which are in south Texas, north-central Louisiana, and south-central Mississippi (Figure 1). Coal-bed gas production is currently underway in south Texas and in north-central Louisiana. In Mississippi, several test wells have been drilled but no data are available on their production potential.

INTRODUCTION In a discussion of South American exploration, it is difficult to know how much area to cover, as there has been such intense exploration for many years in all of the South American countries. Therefore, I have decided to discuss only Argentina, Bolivia and Peru in this paper, since I am most familiar with these three countries. This familiarity has been gained during my last 12 years of nearly continual exploration and mine development. Furthermore, these three countries form a contiguous block straddling the Andes Mountain chain for 2,200 miles in length N-S. Although Chile is part of this block, I excluded that country because it has had the longest recent history in South American exploration, and it is now in a mature stage where new important mines are being placed in production every year. Exploration must progress a lot for the other three countries to attain the stature of Chile. However, major exploration successes such as Yavacocha and Pieriva in Peru, Kori Khollu in Bolivia and Bajo Alumbrera, Agua Rica and Cerro Vanguardia in Argentina certainly indicates that these countries are rapidly accelerating in exploration successes and the resulting new mine developments. Also, by concentrating on three countries, I have avoided making this paper too lengthy. This paper will cover activities of both junior and senior mining companies, both of whom are making significant contributions to exploration. The junior companies often make the initial discovery, develop it further and then bring in a major company when large capital is required. Since most exploration is for gold and copper or combinations of these, most descriptions will cover these types. However, there are significant new exploration successes for zinc and for silver-lead-zinc, and they will be covered, as well. After descriptions of the various properties, there is included a discussion of the governmental policies of Argentina, Bolivia and Peru, as to how they are affecting exploration activities and budgets. Some of these problems could have a major negative affect on the future exploration plans of many companies. I have intended to cover what I think are significant exploration developments in each country, and if a company project is omitted, there was no intention to slight anyone. Explosions and fires are without a doubt two of the most feared occurrences in modern underground mines. When they result in loss of life or substantial property damage, they usually gain world-wide media attention and have, on occasion, provided the impetus for legislative action. The very involvement of the Federal Government in mining was the result of a series of explosions which resulted in the loss of hundreds of lives. Fortunately, explosions of this magnitude are rare. Fires and explosions of lesser consequence are, however, more common and their severity may be more a matter of luck than anything else. The publicity which these events receive is usually restricted to the area immediately surrounding the mine and a1 though MSHA and sometimes the state prepare reports of their investigations, the general mining community is quite often aware of the circumstances surrounding these occurrences. This paper will discuss some of these "lesser" explosions which have occurred recently. These explosions have sometimes occurred in sealed or otherwise inaccessible areas of the mine involved, where conventional ignition sources such as electrical power were not present.

Labor costs, which have rapidly increased in the industrial countries for several years, have forced the mining industry to develop new methods and cost saving systems. Also, because mining is basic to meeting the increasing requirements for raw materials, the mining industry is guaranteed a key position in cost cutting efforts. Although this report aims to describe major recent developments in the Federal Republic of Germany, it is restricted to a limited number of them in view of the wide variety of current innovations. The most important mining activities in West Germany are concentrated in the coal mines on the Rhine, Ruhr and Saar, in the lignite open-cast mines west of Cologne and in the potash and salt mining region in Lower Saxony and Hesse. This report will only discuss developments in the underground coal mines and the potash and salt mines, and focuses on projects of Salzgitter Maschinen and Anlagen AG (SMAG). HYDRAULIC DRILLS Drilling strata of varying strength One special difficulty faced in European coal mines is the varying of compressive strength of strata that occurs even over a few meters. The strata associated with the coal measures ranges from hard and tough sandstone or conglomerate to very soft carboniferous shale. It is often difficult to use continuous miners or roadheaders so that drifting by blasting still predominates. But the varying compressive strengths of the strata makes it difficult to choose the best method to drill the rock. For example, it is best to penetrate hard sandstone or conglomerate with heavy percussion drills. The soft carboniferous shale on the other hand, should be penetrated by high speed rotary drilling to obtain optimum performance.

Traditionally,relatively large gold mines in developing countries have relied on imported process plant engineering, design, pro­ject management and advisory skills. In 1995, there was a significant departure from this in Zimbabwe, when a locally based engineering company under­took and completed the construction of a one hundred and twen­ty thousand tonne per month capacity gold extraction plant for the treatment of sands/slimes residues integrated with run of mine ore. This paper describes the challenges of designing, construct­ing and commissioning a Carbon in Leach (CIL) gold extraction plant in a developing country, and discusses the various con­straints associated with it. In addition, the paper reviews the application of technology which is innovative to Zimbabwe, including the use of dewatering cyclone clusters, and two and a half tonne capacity elution/electrowinning convection units.

These are exciting times for those of us involved in the discovery, development, beneficiation, sales and end uses of industrial minerals. The known sources of traditional raw materials are rapidly being consumed or covered up with highways and urban developments. We would never knowingly cover up a source of gold, silver, diamonds, or even base metals with a shopping center, but it has been difficult to justify not locating construction atop a limestone, granite, or sand dune deposit. During the last ten or so years most of the users of significant amounts of industrial minerals have established task forces made up of geologists, mining engineers, beneficiation experts, ceramic and refractory scientists, and senior members of their purchasing departments whose duty it is to determine where the raw materials for their particular finished products will come from now and farther down the road, like 20 years from now. Likewise, these same ceramic and refractory scientists are developing new materials which require a never ending change into different raw materials and the traditional materials must be refined by selective mining, exotic beneficiation practices and expensive but necessary post-beneficiation treatments to produce minerals for commercial use that were either theoretical minerals or at best showcase specimens when most of us here today were in school studiously acquiring a vocabulary which included Calcite, Magnesite, Dolomite , Feldspar, (Labradorite had the play of colors the prof could see but which I rarely focused on) Wollastonite, Celestite, Chromite, Olivine, Barite and Lepidolite to name a few.

Milling has traditionally been considered more art than science. In the last 10 years, significant improvements in process equipment have been made and we are finally taking significant steps toward approaching grinding as a science. Two machines have been at the center of this development. These are the roll press and the high efficiency separator. The former can be considered as a new technology or adaptation of existing i.e. roller mill. The latter is clearly an improvement of existing technology. Other machines have been introduced to a lesser degree and later. Among these are the CKP and Horomill. The purpose of this paper is to provide an over- view of the currently available modifications for operating systems and options for new milling circuits with some comments on their application and history.

It allows transient state ventilation simulation and features mass based flow rates, natural ventilation, air recirculation, fan curve fitting, airflow reversal and product of combustion tracking. MFIRE was designed to accommodate the needs of the mining industry for routine ventilation calculations and mine emergency planning. This paper describes recent work by the Bureau and MTU to improve MFIRE by incorporating humidity in the mass flow and heat exchange calculations, a data file preparation program and variable reference density in the network calculations. Recent bug fixes are also discussed.

Prompted by the need to conserve energy and reduce operating costs, Agrico Mining Company has made two significant improvements in the transportation of phosphate ore from the mine to the beneficiation plant. One improvement involves a change in a slurry pipeline system which substantially reduced pumping energy, and the other improvement is a major innovation for the phosphate mining industry which involves the transportation of the ore by railroad. Ontario has a diverse industrial mineral resource base including abundant resources of structural industrial minerals such as sand and gravel, crushed stone, building stone, clay, shale, limestone and dolostone. These resources are used in the production of aggregates, brick, metallurgical stone, fillers, lime, cement and other construction materials. The majority of the operations are in deposits of Paleozoic and Quaternary age in southern Ontario, close to the major markets. Province-wide, there were over 140 million metric tonnes of aggregates produced in 1985, approximately 115 million tonnes of which was produced in southern Ontario with the remainder being largely from Crown land in northern Ontario. The structural industrial minerals account for over 80% of the value of total industrial mineral production, with the remaining 20% of the value king accounted for by the non-structural minerals being led by salt which is produced in southwestern Ontario. A host of other non-structural industrial minerals are known but production is currently restricted to calcite, gypsum, quartz, talc, nepheline syenite and by-product metallurgical sulphur products (Fig. 1). Location and Market Area Major production is in the area closest to the large markets of urbanized southern Ontario and the northeastern and north-central United States. In general, with the abundant variety and widespread resources of industrial minerals and the large population within 400 miles of most deposits, the market offers great potential. Ontario's 9 million population accounts for about 35% of the entire gross domestic product of Canada of $476.361 billion dollars in 1985. This equates to about 113 of the nation's buying power being within a 200 km (125 miles) radius of Toronto. This major concentration of industrial and economic activity has resulted in a well developed industrial minerals industry fulfilling most of the structural industrial minerals demand in Ontario, as well as a subsidiary demand in neighbouring provinces and states.
