Zeta potential determinations and microflotation tests (with starch, sodium oleate and flotigan EDA-B) versus pH, pCa and pMg were performed with apatite and typical silicate minerals that occur in Brazilian phosphate ores: schorlomite, diopside, quartz and micas. Unlike quartz and micas, schorlomite and diopside were depressed by cornstarch during anionic flotation with sodium oleate (pH 1 9). The selectivity of the separation apatite/quartz and apatite/micas by flotation with sodium oleate was adversely affected by the presence of calcium (pCa) and magnesium (pMg) in flotation pulp. Solubility/cation exchange capacity of micas is an important source of dissolved calcium and magnesium in the system.

Based on the concept of slope-stability analysis, a formula for determining an important parameter required in the mathematical model for the prediction of mining subsidence in hilly terrain is proposed. The slope geometry and the physical and mechanical properties of the soil at the surface of the natural slope can all be considered in the formula. Incorporation of this new formula into an existing mathematical model provides an integrated approach for the study of ground movement in hilly regions.

INTRODUCTION Insofar as I am aware, the term rock mechanics was not in the English dictionary in 1930 when I started my graduate program at West Virginia University. Hence, I never thought that I was undertaking studies in rock mechanics when I undertook to write a thesis on the physical properties of West Virginia coal. In this case, the subject was primarily concerned with the compressive strength of coal, the elasticity of the coal, the physical weathering properties of the coal and its friability. These days investigations of rocks pertaining to such properties are included in the term "rock mechanics". Other than this aspect, the principle interest in this part of my program was that I became interested in the strength of coal from the standpoint of structural purposes, and also became cognizant of its elastic properties as well as its energy storing properties. This research also tied in with a remark that Professor Lawall made in a Mining Methods class in 1928 when he remarked that a peculiar thing was happening in the southern part of West Virginia, namely, in the Pocahontas coal field. His remarks were to the effect that pillars were blowing up in the mines and when asked why he replied the cause was not known. The failure of three-inch coal specimens, especially those in stronger coal, in non-hydraulic actuated testing machines was reminiscent of his description of those pillar bursts or bumps.

Equipment capital operating costs represent a significant portion of the total cost of most mining operations, and a variety of computerized methods have been developed to assist in the selection and effective use of this equipment. The questions to be answered and the tools available to answer these questions vary with the type of mine to be analyzed, the stage of development of the mining venture, the size of the operation, the details required, and the technical or economic objectives to be reached. Even though a majority of publications are directed towards open pit mining operations, the underground environment is not neglected. In the early planning stages of a mining venture, equipment selection is the problem to be solved. The simplest computer systems are designed to' automate time consuming manual tasks. A data base is supplied to and maintained by the user, which describes the technical and economic characteristics of available equipment. The user specifies the physical environment within which the equipment will be used and chooses from the data base a combination of loading and transport equipment. The role of the computer is to detemine the production which will be likely reached, the associated costs, and other relevant statistics. This approach is most helpful when modeling small operations or isolated parts of larger operations.

[This paper summarizes the more popular mineral valuation techniques being used by the dining industry, and attempts to demonstrate how they are Interrelated and where some are in error when compared to modern methods of financial analysis. The academic community and the larger and more sophisticated raining companies, have largely rejected the older valuation methods such as the, Hoskold and Morkill concepts and replaced them with "discounted cash flow" (DCF) techniques. The relevancy and usefulness of the older methods have been questioned primarily on the basis of their underlying assumptions that mining companies do not have numerous alternative investments and must use sinking funds deposited at market or ?safe" rates of return to recover the purchase price of mineral reserves. The ability to reinvest In numerous (often non-mining} alternative business ventures, the changing purchasing power of the dollar, corporate income and other taxes, depreciation and depletion allowances, and modern financial management practice, all mitigate against the continued use of the older valuation methods, especially for the larger mining companies. Snail mining companies and Individuals still use these methods largely out of habit and familiarity. With most of the mining industry emerging from the deepest business recession in 50 years, primary attention must be given to surviving in a business climate where dominant foreign competition, depressed prices, and potential overcapacity hang heavy over much of the industry. While already shackled with regulatory constraints, restrictive work rules, and high labor costs, mine operators are faced with the difficult task of reducing costs and improving productivity while operating at less than full capacity. To counter these nearly over-whelming factors, the mining industry must continue at the national level to seek regulatory relief and a rational policy toward foreign competition from government-controlled mines. In addition, dialogue with labor organizations must continue to minimize the impact of labor costs, cost escalators, and antiquated work practices. Although national and international actions have a tremendous impact on the future of domestic mining operations, local actions by mine operators to dramatically improve mining productivity will strengthen the industry's competitive stance. Before any substantial progress can be made, however, mine operators must recognize and define areas that depress productivity and establish goals and measures for improvement. Once problem areas are defined, a combination of technological and motivational concepts can be applied to improve productivity. Timing of Improvements While there is an immediate need for productivity improvements, only certain concepts offer near-term improvement potential while others must, of necessity, fit into a mid-range or long-range time frame. Near-term solutions (immediate to one year) likely will involve motivational concepts - work incentives and training - coupled with available technological concepts that require little capitalized development or site testing. Mid-range solutions (one to three years), by contrast, will include technological improvements in mining equipment, techniques, and systems automation. These concepts require a longer period of capitalized development and site testing before use. Long-range solutions (three years or more), which include adoption of new mining methods and computerized control systems, will appear only after prolonged research and capitalized development programs. For many years, the combined efforts of machinery manufacturers and mine operators have endeavored to achieve greater productivity from the men involved and the machinery and capital invested, by developing methods to drill blast holes more effectively. Obviously, this means much more than simply developing a drill that will drill a single hole faster. Considerable attention over these years has also been given to methods of carrying and positioning the drilling machine on versatile jumbos, whereby the man's time can he better utilized by the faster drilling machines. Likewise, the art of blasting to utilize the holes that were drilled to achieve the maximum amount of fragmented ore and the methods of moving the broken ore have also progressed. But each phase of the production cycle just described must be made to balance with the other phases of the work. Obviously, major breakthroughs in only one phase don't always generate more "rock in the box" per manshift. Yet, through the persistent effort of the machinery developers and the researchers, the progressive attitudes of mine managers, backed by corporate capital investments, and battle after battle at the operating level, progress is made. Then, if the innovated system is good enough to "stick", in a few years it becomes the system that the newer method must replace, after the same repeated struggle. This is the situation that many mine operators find themselves in today, Looking at their production cycle, which is assumed to be efficient and balanced between drilling, blasting and materials moving capabilities, they tend to guard any visable disruption of the balance of that day's production, and many would prefer to maintain the status quo indefinitely. Dust collectors for roof bolting machines generally use a dry box to collect the roof bolting material. Recently, an underground mining operation converted a dry box dust collector to a wet box dust collector with a unique exception from MSHA for testing purposes. Water is routed to the roof bolter from the main water line of the continuous miner. The wet box utilizes a water spray to wet the incoming material. Testing was conducted comparing the two different collector types. Respirable dust concentrations surrounding the roof bolter with the different collection boxes were similar. The main difference in respirable dust concentrations occurred when cleaning the dust boxes. The average respirable dust concentration during cleaning of the wet box was 0.475 mg/m3, and during the cleaning of the dry box the average respirable dust concentration was 1.188 mg/m3. The silica content of the roof material was high, ranging from 28.9% to 52.7% during this study. The results from this study indicate that using the wet box as a collector reduced exposure to respirable dust up to 60%when cleaning the collector boxes. INTRODUCTION Currently, the dry vacuum dust collection system is the standard dust collector on roof bolters in underground coal mining. It has been proven to be an effective dust control to prevent roof bolter operators’ overexposure to coal mine respirable silica dust during roof bolting operations [Potts eta l, 2011 and Colinet, 2013]. The dry collection system works as follows: drill cuttings are vacuumed into the precleaner. The precleaner dumps oversized material onto the mine floor while undersized material enters the dust box via vacuum airflow produced by a blower. The cuttings entering the dust box are either deposited on the floor of the dust box or into a dust collector bag. The vacuum airflow leaves the dust box through a final filter which removes any small particles from the airflow. Figure 1 shows the internal view of two dry collection system boxes; one that does not use the dust collector bags and another that uses the dust collector bags. Dust collectors that use dust collector bags to contain material inside the dust collector box have been shown to provide better protection to roof bolter operators than dust collectors that do not use the bags [Listak and Beck 2008]. The dry collectors are very efficient at reducing respirable coal mine dust exposure from roof bolting activities. Recently, Blue Mountain Energy’s Deserado underground coal mining operation, outside Rangely, CO, made a modification to the dry collector system to convert it to a wet collector system with a unique exception from the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) for testing purposes. The wet collector system still uses a vacuum system to pull material from the vertical roof bolt hole, but incorporates a water spray nozzle located inside the dust box to wet the incoming material. The flow through the nozzle ranges from 1.9–7.6 lpm (0.5–2.0 gpm) at 0.69 MPa (100 psi). The conversion to the wet collector system removes the precleaner and the cyclones inside the dust box. The wet material (sludge) then empties through a specialized valve in the bottom of the box. The final filter is still used to prevent respirable dust from leaving the dust box through the exhaust. During operation, the wet collector dust box is opened and hosed clean after roof bolting every place. After every two entries the final filter is changed out. Figure 2 shows the inside of the wet collector box.

Gold leaching of an auriferous pyrite ore from the Portovelo deposit in Ecuador indicates that noncyanide leaching systems, such as thiocyanate and thiourea, are not as effective as the traditional cyanide system. For example, whereas approximately 95% of the gold can be leached from the ore with cyanide, only about 50% gold dissolution can be achieved with a thiocyanate leaching system. Electrochemical measurements indicate that gold is not cathodically protected by pyrite in these systems. Based on the results of preliminary diagnostic experiments, it appears that gold dissolution in thiocyanate and thiourea systems is limited by passivation due to the formation of either elemental sulfur or sulfur compounds on the gold surface.

When one considers the advancements made during the 25 years prior to the late fifties, and compares these advances with the progress made in the past decade, the comparison is indeed startling. It was not until 1935 that trucks began to replace rail as a major hauling facility, Initially, the haulage capacity of end dump trucks was limited to 18 or 20 tons. "Straight stick" transmissions were utilized and the available horsepower was minimal. In the early forties single planetary axle 25 ton trucks were introduced, and shortly thereafter those were followed by 35 ton tandem axle units.

High-pressure grinding rolls subject the feed material to pressures of 200 N/mm? During this process considerable size reduction and the Formation of flakes occur. This paper describes the basic consideration For design and operating of this type of mill. It is also shown that the particle size distribution resulting from this process is typical for grinding processes but untypical for crushing processes. High pressure grinding rolls are designed in size of up to 2.8 m roll diameter allowing feed material top sizes of 250 mm. The rigid frame, bearing and drive - train design allows a broad application of the high-pressure grinding rolls operating the machine in open or semi-closed and closed circuit for dry and moist feed materials. Operating results show that capacity increases of up to 100 % can be accomplished with this technology. The high-pressure grinding roll also, allows for lower operating and maintenance costs due to energy savings of up to 20 L and reduction of wear to less than 1 76 for dry and less than 0.1 5 for wet grinding. Other advantages of the high-pressure grinding rolls are smaller equipment sizes than a ball or SAG-mill for a given capacity resulting in lower building sizes with reduced capital in- vestment costs.

This paper will deal with some of the considerations which, were involved in the design and construction of the uranium mills in the Elliot Lake area . These plants, eleven in number, range from 1500 to 6500 tons per day milling capacity. Most references are with respect to the seven plants in the Rio Tinto Group which have a combined milling capacity in excess of 20,000 tons per day. In dealing with such abroad subject as mill design, one has the choice, of covering a few specific problems in great detail, or else attempting to cover many subjects superficially and briefly. In preparing this presentation, an attempt has been made to compromise on these extremes, and to select some interesting illustrations which are of general interest in the field of mill design, and of value to persons concerned with mill design broadly, beyond the field of uranium mills.

This paper presents an analysis of mechanism of secondary fragmentation and respirable dust generation due to regrinding. In continuous miners, the recovered coal and uncleaned coal from the previous cutting cycle have to be transported through the circumference of the cutting drum, subjecting the coal to regrinding. Such regrinding comminutes the coal material utilizing kinetic energy, thus creating a great amount of respirable dust. The mechanism of a single particle subjected to regrinding is analyzed. A mathematical model is developed to describe regrinding in field conditions. The important factors influencing the comminution process are discussed in detail. Utilizing three types of coal seams, laboratory experiments are being carried out with an Automated Rotary Coal Cutting Simulator (ARCCS) to quantitatively evaluate the effects of some particular parameters, such as cutting velocity, depth of sump and properties of coal material, on breakage and on the amount of respirable dust generated. An orthogonal fractional factorial experimental arrangement is used to optimize experimental design. Preliminary experimental results are presented.

"INTRODUCTION Conventional steel bar reinforcement is used in many tunnel linings to provide high flexural and tensile load resistance. These Reinforced Concrete (RC) tunnel linings may suffer flexural cracking during service or, in the case of precast concrete segments, during production, handling, or installation. Cracks can lead to corrosion of steel reinforcement, so limits are placed on maximum acceptable crack widths to reduce the likelihood of corrosion during the intended design life (AFTES, 2013; MC2010, 2012). However, the relatively light level of reinforcement used in many applications can result in quite wide in-service crack widths, so either additional steel bar reinforcement is required to limit maximum crack widths, or fibers can be included to control crack widths. Numerous investigations have been undertaken into the efficacy of including steel fibers to reduce crack widths in conventionally reinforced members (Stang and Aarre, 1992; Abrishami and Mitchell, 1997; Bischoff, 2003; Dupont and Vandevalle, 2003; and Jansson et al, 2010), but steel fibers suffer the problem that they are at least as sensitive to corrosion at cracks as steel bars and therefore have similarly tight limits placed on acceptable crack widths (AFTES, 2013). An alternative means of maintaining narrow crack limits in RC members has therefore been sought. The current investigation was instigated following an observation that theories promoted as an explanation for the ability of steel fibers to reduce crack widths in reinforced concrete flexural members (Deluce et al, 2014) do not depend on the material composition of the fibers used but instead depend primarily on the tensile stress generated by the fibers across cracks. Since it is known that macro-synthetic fibers are capable of equaling the post-crack tensile capacity of steel fibers, it has been hypothesized that macro-synthetic fibers are also capable of reducing crack widths in reinforced concrete flexural members but with the added advantage that macro-synthetic fibers are completely immune to the effects of corrosion. Use of macro-synthetic fibers to reduce maximum crack widths in reinforced concrete flexural members subject to aggressive environmental exposure is more rational than use of steel fibers because steel fibers are very sensitive to the corrosive effects of environmental exposure at cracks. The current investigation was therefore undertaken to explore the potential use of macro-synthetic fibers to reduce maximum crack widths in reinforced concrete members subject to flexure. Barchip BC54 fibers were selected as they are one of the most widely used and competitive high performance macro-synthetic fibers currently available."

The integrated grouting method, as developed in the USSR, can be applied to multi-purpose operations that in¬clude the construction of shafts, drifts, and tunnels. In the USSR it has been used extensively for primary and final grouting of underground excavations in mining engineering and civil engineering projects. It has been applied in projects where the primary objective was waste contain¬ment. It has also been used to control subsidence beneath buildings located over mined out openings and to eliminate the flow of ground water beneath and around dams. This chapter considers several industrial applications in the form of case histories. The word integrated means that grouting activities were integrated with other activities. 9.1 CASE HISTORIES OF GROUTING FRACTURED ROCK WHEN SINKING VERTICAL SHAFTS The integrated grouting method has been applied most widely in the sinking of vertical shafts in fractured, satu¬rated rock. As explained previously herein, grouting oper¬ations preferably are carried out from the ground surface where they are integrated into the schedule of the setting up of the shaft excavation and construction equipment. Such integration reduces significantly the length of time required for preparation of shaft construction and the time required to sink the shaft. The increased efficiency is achieved by the elimination of cementing operations from the working face upon the penetration of each aquifer. Concomitantly, labor and energy consumption during shaft sinking are minimized because the more complicated and labor-intensive work is carried out at the surface section. Table 9.1 presents the essential parameters for the pri¬mary grouting of saturated fractured rock carried out by the integrated method when sinking vertical shafts. 9.1.1 NAGOL'CHANSK MINE NO. 1-2, VENTILATION SHAFT NO. 1 The integrated method of grouting saturated fractured rock through holes drilled from the surface was employed for the first time during the sinking of vertical shaft No. 1 at the Nagol'chansk mine No. 1-2 in the Don Basin. The shaft had an inside diameter of 6 m. The grouting operations commenced by using cement grout with a density of 1.7 to 1.8 g/cm3. Clay-based grout with cement and other addi¬tives was used only for grouting the aquifers where cement grout proved to be ineffective. By the time of the grouting of ventilation shaft No. 1, hydrodynamic analytical methods were well in hand and a preliminary method for designing isolation curtains had been developed. A method for designing and drilling ori¬ented directional drillholes whose natural curvature re¬flected the characteristics of the fracturing had been devel¬oped. The majority of the necessary equipment had been developed. Clay-based grouts were considered ready for the first industrial application. The hydrogeologic environment at the Nagol'chansk mine No. 1-2 contained many prolific aquifers. According to monitored drillhole data, the total expected inflow into ventilation shaft No. 1 without grouting was 425 m3/hr. This large ground water inflow rate was supported by in¬formation obtained during the sinking of the main shaft and from the auxiliary shaft of the "Nagol'chansk" mine No. 1-2. The construction contractor at the site began sinking ventilation shaft No. 1 to a depth of 217 m by cement grouting from the working face of the shaft. As a result of the cement grouting operations, the inflow of water was reduced from 105.4 to 40 m3/hr over this 217 m interval. However the residual inflow rate caused the shaft to become functional at the depth of 217 m. At this point all grouting operations were transferred to SPETSTAMPONAZHGEOLOGIA (STG) in an effort to improve the operation. In order to carry out preliminary grouting from the sur¬face, seven drillholes were installed and designed for re¬ceiving grout. Drilling was implemented by the ZIF-1200A rig to the design depth of the shaft. The geometry of the principal fracture system that would be encountered by the shaft was estimated while breaking ground using informa¬tion from other shafts. The drillholes were arranged so that they cut through the aquifers uniformly around the shaft. Some preference was given to intercepting the aquifers that were located along the rock dip above the shaft bottom because it was established that the ground water in the aqui¬fers flowed downward along the dip into the cone of de¬pression of the shaft. Investigations in the drillholes using the DAU-3M flowmeter described in Chapter 3 showed that all of the nine aquifers were penetrated by the time a depth of 690 m had been reached. The flowmetric information showed that aquifer numbers [1 and 2], [4, 5, and 6], and [7 and 8] had practically identical hydrogeologic characteristics; so it was decided to connect them into combined stopes and inject the grout using five stopes instead of nine. Table 9.2 shows the results of the grout injection into the aquifers. The volume of grout pumped into the separate intervals through single holes varied from 204 to 15 m3. About 45% of the contaminated sites are dealing with heavy metal problems. Metals are spread in the environment by mining activities, surface treatment and non ferrous processing. As heavy metals can not be degraded, removal or immobilization (leading to bioavailability reduction) are the only risk reducing measures that exist. The currently best available technique for remediation of heavy metal contaminated groundwater is to pump the contaminated water and to treat it in a wastewater treatment plant installed on the surface. Next to this often used, but expensive, pump and treat technologies, heavy metals can be immobilized by inducing sulfate reducing bacteria (SRB) to transform the sulfates, that are very often present in the same groundwater (due to the metal mining or processing activities), into sulfides. These sulfides will precipitate the metals as insoluble metal sulfides. At the moment several studies have demonstrated the feasibility of this In Situ Bioprecipitation Process (ISBP) for the removal of heavy metals from ground-water as well at lab scale (batch and column tests) as at field scale. However, some questions arise concerning the continuation of the process, the efficiency and the sustainability of the precipitates. The presented study will try to answer these questions. The study is based on more than 10 different studies, all done by the same authors, on different groundwaters and aquifer samples. The presentation will give an overview of the guidelines necessary for a correct and successful bioprecipitation process with stable metal sulfide precipitates. An important question in the ISBP is related to the sustainability of the heavy metal precipitates. It could be observed that the interruption in the carbon source delivery also stopped the in situ bioprecipitation process. Depending on the metal also some release from the precipitate could be observed. It was shown that release can occur with Co and Ni. Aquifers, on which the metals precipitated during the ISBP, were treated in a sequential extraction process under an-aerobic and aerobic conditions. It could be shown that especially under the anaerobic conditions the Zn and Cd precipitates changed from the leachable and the exchangeable fraction to the organic or Fe-Mn fraction (i.e. from the unstable to the stable fraction). The same could be observed for Co and Ni but still some fraction was present under a more available form. On the other hand it could be shown that large differences were observed concerning the heavy metal speciation on the aquifer in function of the used carbon source during the ISBP. The molasses treated systems showed a much more available heavy metal fraction on the aquifer compared to the lactate or HRC® treated groundwater. The different speciation forms based on the use of different carbon sources will be discussed in detail. It will pay attention to the influence of the carbon source, the efficiency of the induction of the bioprecipitation process, the influence on the competence between sulfate reducers and methanogenic bacteria and the influence of low pH on the ISBP. It seems that acetate, which is also a degradation product of fermentation of some carbon sources, can inhibit some sulfate reducers. Also the relation between slow release compounds and immediately available compounds will be explained. Finally a pilot study will be presented showing the problems that can be encountered during this process. Focus will be put on the induction of the process, the keeping on of the process and the follow up of the process by the installation of in situ mesocosm socks. These results will allow the correct implementation of the ISBP with an eye on longevity and sustainability of the process and present the ISBP as a much more sustainable alternative to the pump and treat technology as measure for heavy metals contaminated groundwaters.

"A study has been undertaken at the Missouri University of Science and Technology (MS&T) limestone Experimental Mine to determine new fans set up and wiring options.to install additional mine ventilation capacity. Selection for main fans has been undertaken according to the mine’s required performance specifications and fan characteristics. Available fans for ventilating the mine are Joy and Alphair axial fans each of 24 kW each and two Spendrup booster fans of 12 kW each. The installation of main mine fans on the surface and underground entails numerous considerations. Design of a ventilation network for the Experimental Mine incorporating surface and booster fans has been accomplished using Ventsim Visual program software. The ventilation network has been separated into two segregated parts. A main surface fan and a booster fan have been used in each segregated part of the network. The mine has had a vane axial Joy fan in place for many years. The Alphair 4800 VAX 1800 full blade adjustable pitch vane axial fan was selected and installed as the other surface fan and eventual replacement for the Joy fan. Main surface fans have been connected individually to booster fans in series. The Alphair main surface fan has been installed vertically. Four different wiring options and related cost estimations for addition of the new main fans to the ventilation network have been considered. The analysis resulted in an innovative steel frame design used to allow the fans, when necessary, to be moved to the side of the shaft so that blast pressures do not damage the blades. INTRODUCTION Main fans are the heart of a mine’s ventilation network and play a key role in supplying required airflow (Haghighat, 2014). The Missouri S&T Experimental Mine has been developed in uniform limestone with few stratigraphic features. The mine floor is approximately horizontal and water drains well. A study has been carried out on MS&T Experimental Mine. Selection of main fans has been undertaken according to the mine’s required performance specifications and fan characteristics. Ventsim Visual computer simulation has been used to assist in design of the ventilation network. Wiring circuits, fan foundations and flexibility have been considered as the three main parameters for surface fan installation at the Experimental Mine. Two surface and two underground wiring options and three surface set up options and related cost estimates for the new surface fan system were investigated. Frequent use of explosives in the mine occurs throughout each year. Flexibility in changing the position of a surface fan is important. A number of options have been considered for the location of a vertical main fan positioned on the upcasting shaft. The mine is used for a variety of purposes and flexibility has a high priority amongst design considerations."

This paper exposes the reasons that led the Empresa Nacional Minera del Sahara, S.A. (ENMINSA) to the selection of a conveyor belt system for the transport of phosphate rock over a distance of 100 kilometers. ENMINSA was created in 1962, with the main objetive of the exploitation of phosphate rock deposits in the Spanish province of Sahara, in North West Africa. Poor grade outcrops were known previously. A detailed geological research carried over the province led ENMINSA to the discovery of deposits not exposed, and of much higher grade. The sector known as Bu-Craa was chosen as the most promising, and was explored by means of drill holing and shafting. The important amount of information obtained permitted a detailed evaluation of the capacity and grade of the rich ore contained in the Bu-Craa area. Simultaneously with the systematic reconnaissance of the Bu-Craa deposits, ENMINSA developped the study of the technical and economical problems required for the beneficiation of the rock, which comprised five main groups of projects: rock exploitation; beneficiation plant; rock transport from the mine site to the Atlantic coast; storage, handling and loading facilities by the sea- side, and power plant. Once determined the location of the marine loading facilities, which to date are in an advanced stage of construction (figs. 1 and 2), the studies conductive to the selection of the best transport system from the mine to the ocean, along 100 kms. distance were undertaken.

With the successful implementation of supervisory control on the Bagdad concentrator grinding circuits, steps have been taken to expand supervisory control to the flotation circuits. This paper discusses the design and installation of the slurry delivery systems, analyzing instruments, level control devices, reagent pumps and supervisory software. Emphasis is placed on the design and installation of a reliable slurry transport system to feed the Courier 30 online analyzing instruments. Total system availability has been measured at plus 95%. Phase 1 acceptance testing of the supervisory software indicates a notable increase in copper recovery with no significant change in final copper grade.
