During the past decade, a general awareness of the need for and subsequent development of increased safety in United States coal mines has taken place. Government and industry alike were stimulated into accelerating their actions through unacceptable accident statistics and costs (in terms of human misery dollar values). Those of us who work in the United States coal industry are aware of the development of governmental controls on nine safety. Both Federal and State regulations have placed increased responsibility upon mine owners and operators to insure a safe working environment and to provide training for miners. No other industrial group of workers has received such attention or, in our opinion, deserves it more.

Arafertil's oxidized ore presents barite grades that oscillate between 5 and 12%. The barite separation plays a major role in the production of apatite concentrates for the manufacturing of phosphate fertilizers. The selectivity, via flotation, in the system barite-apatite is inherently difficult due to the similarity of the physical/chemical characteristics of these minerals. The evaluation of the relevant aspects of this separation was performed based on the determinations of the electrical surface charge of barite and apatite, the abstraction isotherms of cetyl-stearyl sodium sulfate and fatty acids soaps for barite and apatite, microflotation in a modified Hallimond tube, and flotation tests in a batch column. The results showed that the adsorption of cetyl- stearyl sodium sulfate occurs preferentially onto barite, in comparison with apatite. On the other hand, the rice bran oil soap presents similar adsorption levels onto both barite and apatite. The cetyl-stearyl sodium sulfate was selective as a barite collector in the presence of apatite, a fact that was not observed in the case of rice bran oil soap.

"INTRODUCTION This past year commodity prices continued their dip with increased volatility causing market values to slide another 16% putting increased pressure on even the largest companies to improve their free cash flow.[1] Without a recovery in commodity prices in sight, companies must find a sustainable method to improve returns in the current economic climate. In an effort to improve plant sustainability, the mineral processing industry is investing in advanced automation technologies and innovative processing methods that are both more reliable and more efficient than ever before. One such breakthrough technology is Heap Leaching (HL). This method of extraction has certain advantages over traditional metallurgical methods making previously unsustainable operations economically feasible. While HL is already seeing use in the gold and copper industries among others, recent developments may allow for the use of HL to process primary sulfide ores which make up about 80% of today’s ores.[2] For this reason, this emerging technology is poised for exciting growth. Unfortunately, as with any process change, the implementation of HL projects requires significant training on both the control system as well as the underlying process, and further, due to the complex nature of the HL process, this can be a particularly difficult task. DEMOGRAPHIC TIME BOMB Even before the implementation of these new technologies, the availability of the skilled workforce has already become a significant problem for the mining and mineral processing industries. From a survey of 912 mining professionals, Stratum International found that a mere 0.4% of senior level candidates were between the ages of 25 and 34 and a similar proportion aged over 75 years.[3] This indicates that there is both a deficiency of young skilled workers and a skilled workforce that is retiring earlier than the previous generation. Combined with data published by the US Department of Labor stating that the median age of the mining workforce is approaching 50 years old, research suggests that up to 50% of skilled mining and mineral process professionals are expected to retire in the next 5 years, leaving with their irreplaceable knowledge and experience.[4] While it is projected that the labor pool will be sufficient to fill open positions, the real question is if this young workforce will have necessary skill sets and experiences. In addition to a rapidly aging workforce and an inexperienced labor pool, a study done by the Oil and Gas Journal showed that it takes about 7 years, on average, for new workers to achieve a level of competency that permits them to assess risks and appropriately make decisions.[5] Not only is this figure is in direct conflict with the typical tenure of 5 years in one position meaning that the thinly spread skilled labor will be required to become senior staff before they are able to achieve competency in their current role, this also means that these millennials are not given the opportunity to become competent in their role before the retirement of the more experienced workforce."

This study summarizes the results of various numerical and laboratory experiments per-formed to study the effect of airflow recirculation on gas concentration. The numerical exercises were carried out on a simulated mine ventilation net-work. The laboratory experiments were conducted at the Mackay School of Mines' airflow monitoring system in Reno, Nevada. In both cases, the airflow was recirculated through the system by means of a main fan and a set of booster fans. The booster fans were positioned to produce two types of recirculation: In line and Cross-cut. For each type, various recirculation conditions were generated by changing the booster fan pressure. During each test, the gas emission rate at the simulated working face was kept constant. The study illustrates the conditions under which controlled airflow recirculation may be used to solve a district ventilation problem.

Previous research developed guide- lines to restrict the placement of air velocity sensors to areas of Low turbulence in underground nines. Even though these guidelines are theoretically correct, and may be easy to follow in underground coal mines, their application in small underground metal mines is difficult. As a result, study was undertaken at the Colorado School of Mines Experimental Mine to determine if an air velocity sensor could be placed in other locations with acceptable results. It was found chat by applying a variable calibration function to correct for changes in amounts of turbulence, instead of the previously used calibration factor multiplication, the sensor could be used successfully in areas of moderate turbulence.

9.1 INTRODUCTION Precious metals in a leach solution are extracted, concentrated, and purified to complete the process begun in the heap and to produce an end product which will provide an economic payback to the mine developer/operator. Several different processes are required to convert the dissolved precious metals into pure metal bars. This chapter discusses the actual production of metal once it has been recovered from the pregnant leach solutions by the zinc cementation (Merrill -Crowe) or carbon adsorption processes. Metal production is generally taken to mean the production of a fairly pure "dore" bar. This chapter also reiterates some information from Chapter 8 in a slightly different context, since the focus of Chapter 8 was a fairly detailed description of the two actual recovery processes, whereas the focus of this chapter is metal production. The sale of an intermediate precious metal product is possible (as opposed to the production of dore bars at the mine site); however, the value of the precious metals is reduced by the various charges and risks associated with precious metal processing. For this reason, most operators choose to produce the most refined metal possible in order to maximize project economics. Precious metals may be extracted from the leach solution by both conventional and unconventional processes. The conventional processes are activated carbon/electrowinning (ACE) and zinc precipitation (ZIP). The unconventional processes are resin ion exchange, solvent extraction, and direct electrowinning. A typical ACE process has two circulating loops. The first loop adsorbs the cyanide-metal complexes from the dilute leach solution onto the activated carbon. A second, separate solution loop removes the cyanide-metal complexes from the activated carbon into a strong solution, the electrowinning electrolyte. Activated carbon is transferred from one fluid loop to the other. The operating cost of the ACE process is directly proportional to the quantity of carbon stripped and thus to the quantity of precious metal produced. A typical ZIP process contains a single circulating loop. The solution is filtered, deaerated, contacted with zinc, and filtered again. The barren leach solution is then returned to the heap. Induction times for a variety of minerals have been measured at a particle bed. Electrostatic repulsive forces between bubble and particle generally are of secondary importance in determining the hydrophobic state; nevertheless, the shortest induction times are measured at the isoelectric point of the solid. More importantly, the study shows that the film-rupture mechanism at a polished surface might be different from that at a particle bed. The induction time measured at a particle bed, besides being dependent on the surface chemistry of the system, shows a definite relationship to particle size and density. Theoretical analysis suggests that such a measured induction time at a particle bed should properly be defined as an attachment time which consists of the induction time and the film-displacement time. Thus one portion of the measured attachment time is the induction time, the time required to thin the water film between the particle surface and the gas bubble to a critical thickness so that rupture of the film takes place ('1)' The other portion of the measured attachment time is the time required for the film to be displaced to such an extent that the attachment is stabilized with respect to the upward motion of the bubble and the downward gravitational force acting on the particle ('2)' Further, the present study illustrates that '2 is related to the hydrophobic character of the surface, the rate of film displacement after rupture, the upward velocity of the captive bubble, and, most importantly, the particle size and density.

In September of 1988, the United States Environmental Protection Agency (US EPA) published final regulations that effect owners and operators of underground storage tanks (USTs). These regulation include stringent technical requirements for owners and operators of USTs containing petroleum and certain hazardous substances. The technical requirements effect both new (those installed after December 1988) and existing USTs and include notification; performance and operating standards; release detection, reporting, investigation; release response and corrective action; and closure requirements for out-of-service USTs. The USEPA also published final regulations regarding financial responsibility requirements for owners or operators of petroleum USTs in October of 1988. These regulations require owners or operators of petroleum USTs to demonstrate financial responsibility for the costs of corrective action and compensating third parties for bodily injury or property damage caused by releases from petroleum USTs. Like thousands of other industries, the mining industry must become thoroughly familiar with these new regulations in order to properly manage their UST systems, ensure compliance, and understand other ramifications imposed by these regulations.

To accommodate growth in air service and to follow the Master Plan for long-term airport development, the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority established thed2 Development Program at Washington Dulles International Airport. A sub-surface Automated People Mover (APM) System is under construction to replace the Mobile Lounges as the primary people mover system at Dulles. To minimize disruption to airport operations the majority of the APM System’s crossings of Taxi lanes will be undertaken using Tunnel Boring Machines (TBM) or the New Austrian Tunneling Method (NATM). This paper explores the planning and design of these shallow tunnel segments for future generation aircraft loads, within the constraints of minimal construction access under post 9/11 security requirements and the context of the overall airport expansion program.

When Ralph Banks called and asked if I would agree to present a paper on environmental health in the coal industry, I was reluctant because I have not been actively involved in coal mine dust control on a day-to-day basis for a number of years. Ralph reminded me that I am one of the few industry people with an industrial health background who remembers the pre-1969 Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety era. This marks the second time within the past year that I have had a similar request based on the same basic reasons. While I was pleased to have been remembered, I'm beginning to feel like the football player who has played one too many games. In responding to Ralph's request to present an overview of the past, present and future of environmental health in the coal industry, I have attempted to take the broad approach of someone who, having been intimately involved in an area of endeavor for a number of years and then leaves, has an opportunity to revisit that area at a later date to see what has changed and what remains the same, what have been the successes and the failures. Since none of us can foresee the future, trying to project too far ahead is fraught with frivolity, except that unless one is foolish enough to accept a future invitation to review those predictions compared to actual events, no one will recall how accurate or inaccurate those projections might have been. I can assure you that I will not ask to accept that challenge, so you can rest comfortably that five years from today you will not be asked to sit through a similar presentation by me - and that's a promise.

Earl C. Herkenhoff Publication of the article "The Flotation Behavior of Digested Asphalt Ridge Tar Sands" by R.J. Smith and J.D. Miller has confirmed and again spotlighted a most significant and important development in the field of tar sand and heavy oil mining. This is the ability to recover 95 % of the bitumen in dry tar sands by a hot water process. The initial investigation by Miller and Sepulveda in early 1978, "Separation of Bitumen from Dry Tar Sands," was the first blockbuter. It is disappointing that there has been so little scientific and industry ackowledgement that the authors laid to rest the long entrenched belief that the sand grains had to be "water wetted" for a hot water process to be applicable. Dr. Miller and his researchers at the University of Utah used slightly different mineral dressing terminology in describing their process but it is essentially the old, established technique of high solids attrition scrubbing at elevated temperatures with a conditioner or modifier, followed by dilution and froth flotation. Similar techniques were described in detail for other nonmetallic minerals in the mid-1940s by Stuart Falconer of American Cyanamid Co. The authors used a 15-minute "scrub" period (or in their terminology "digester step") at 73% solids and 95°C (203°F) in a 0.3 m solution of sodium carbonate -about 4 kg/t (8 lb per st) of tar sand. Flotation was at 10% solids. Obviously, the scrub is an expensive step with respect to energy input but the high recovery of bitumen appears to justify it. Two basic questions then arise: • What are the effects of shorter scrubbing time, lower temperature, and less sodium carbonate? • Would a two-stage approach be advantageous? That is, could you get the major proportion of the bitumen with a mild scrub and apply the high power and temperature only to the refractory portion? These variables should be evaluated. Apparently, all results were only for rougher flotation. What would the grade and recovery of bitumen be if multiple cleaner flotation steps were employed? We must concede that a 60-62% grade of bitumen leaves considerable room for upgrading. Finally, it should be noted by all executives who approve funds for heavy oil recovery schemes, most of which are variations of in-situ methods, that mining can yield a 95% recovery of bitumen. That is correct, 95%. Imagine what that does to the total barrels recovered from a heavy oil resource compared with the scrawny 30-35% maximum recovery we are getting now. Miller We, too, share Mr. Herkenhoff s enthusiasm for the mining of tar sands-heavy oil and continue the development of related processing technology. Specifically, it will be noted that by appropriate control of bitumen viscosity in the feed (probably the most important variable for successful separation) the recovery can be accomplished at low digestion temperature and low addition of alkali. A 91 t/d (100 stpd) pilot plant based on our technology is now being operated by Enercor in Salt Lake City (Hatfield, Oblad, and Miller, 1982). In these same pilot facilities, rougher concentrates containing more than 80% bitumen on a dry basis are being produced from Asphalt Ridge Feed. However, the processing of certain other tar sands results in incomplete digestion of bitumen/sand aggregates as discussed elsewhere (Miller and Misra, 1982). Such undigested aggregates are shown in Fig. 1. In this regard, it is intended that a recycle stream will be installed in the pilot plant to provide for redigestion of middling products. A study was made of frictional ignitions in the underground coal mining industry from 1980 to 1992. The population of frictional ignitions was correlated to a variety of potential contributing factors including the mined coalbed, geographic location, mine production, methane gas emissions, and the type of mining equipment in use. The number of frictional ignitions reported in 1991 and 1992 surpassed the annual totals in all previous years included in the study. Most frictional ignitions occur during cutting operations at a coal face by a continuous miner. The average coal production of mines experiencing frictional ignitions is greater than the average of all underground coal mines throughout the survey period. Methane drainage may have produced a drop in the ratio of gas emissions to coal production (E/P) in mines experiencing frictional ignitions.

University of Idaho scientists research under U.S. Bureau of Mines Cooperative Agreement C0278001 constitutes a complex hydrogeological, hydrochemical and metallurgical mine waste management project at an existing Superfund site. Technologies that may prove useful for the extraction of dissolved metals from acid mine water and solid wastes include lixiviation and biosorption. Acid mine water is the major, long-term problem in the valley. We are attempting to delineate the major sources of ground water recharge which feed the acid mine drainage and their hydraulic properties. Grouting of recharge areas may facilitate minimizing the production of acid mine drainage if recharge pathways can be identified.

The Marysvale volcanic field of west-central Utah contains large areas of argillically altered rocks (fig. 1) that, in turn, enclose smaller areas of fine-grained, medium-grade, replacement alunite deposits and coarsely crystalline, high-grade vein-type alunite deposits. The largest replacement alunite deposits are [ ] located peripheral to a 23-m.y.-old monzonite stock called the Central Intrusive (fig. 1). The deposits formed in near-surface, highly oxidizing environments at the tops of hydrothermal plumes that were spaced irregularly around the stock. The deposits are horizontally zoned from alunitic cores through kaolinitic to propylitic envelopes. Vertically, characteristic alteration minerals progress from a pyrite-propylitic alteration assemblage at the base, upward through alunitic, jarositic, and hematitic assemblages to a flooded silica cap as shown on figure 2. The silica caps are cut by hydrothermal explosion breccias. d34Sso4 values of + 11.5 to + 15.4 permil indicate that sulfur in the hydrothermal plume was derived from underlying Mesozoic evaporites. The sharp upward transition from pyrite- propylite to alunite probably marks the paleowater table, and the top of the flooded silica cap represents the paleoground surface. Basin-Range extensional tectonism began shortly after alteration, and buried the replacement alunite deposits in basins beneath sediments eroded from uplands. The deposits were only recently exhumed.

The Päijänne Tunnel is being constructed to conduct raw water from Lake Päijänne to the Helsinki Metropolitan Area. The length of the tunnel will be 120 km and the cross-sectional area is 15.5 sq m. Excavation started in 1973 and will be completed in 1982. 94 km of the tunnel have been constructed from Lake Päijänne towards Helsinki. The construction has advanced according to plan, and due to Finland's hard bedrock there have not been any great surprises. When completed, the tunnel will meet the water requirements of the Helsinki Metropolitan Area for a long time in the future because, with a free fall of 36 m, 9.6 cu m/s of water can be conducted through the tunnel from Lake Päijänne to the Helsinki Area. With pumping it will be possible to obtain a flow of 15 cu m/s, although at first the discharge will only be 5 cu m/s. The tunnel was partly taken into service as early as March 1979 when it was possible to conduct water to the municipalities north of the Helsinki Area. It is already possible now to conduct water to Helsinki, too, but from the Korpimäki pumping station onwards it must be done through the River Vantaa, which is polluted. When the tunnel is completed in 1982, good quality water can be conducted from Lake Päijänne to the Helsinki Metropolitan Area through a continuous rock tunnel. The cost estimate in 1973 was $ 88 million while it is now $ 90 million notwithstanding high inflation. AREAS NEEDED FOR CONSTRUCTION The areas needed for construction were bought through voluntary deals. Areas of 4 - 5 hectares were bought along the tunnel line at about 5 km intervals. The excavation of access tunnels was started from these places, and the crushed rock from the main tunnel was also transported there. However, it was not necessary to buy the area

German manufacturer DBT signed a contract to supply a sixth automated-plow long-wall system to Shenyang Coal in Liaoning province in northeastern China. This most recent order occurred just weeks after DBT signed a contract to deliver a fifth automated-plow longwall system to Datong Coal in Shanxi province. The plow will go into service at Shenyang Coal’s Hongyang Mine. Mining conditions at the mine, coupled with DBT’s advanced automated-plow technology, means that the system has the potential to become one of the world’s most productive thin-seam longwalls.

The paper by Lewis and Braun l presents experimental and calculational evidence that primary chalcopyrite ores are rapidly oxidized by warm oxygen-bearing water. Resulting solutions contained copper sulfate products of the matrix rock decomposition such as magnesium sulfate and sulphuric acid. Iron was oxidized to insoluble hematite and hydrous iron sulfates. Oxygen injection near the base of a broken and permeable flooded ore deposit was calculated to cause circulation of oxidizing solutions to the entire permeable region. The rate of dissolution of copper and degree of oxygen saturation for given oxygen injection rates were presented. Their work suggests that in-situ recovery of deep, disseminate primary copper deposits is technically feasible. The actual feasibility depends on economics and environmental safety as well, and it is the purpose of this paper to address these two aspects.

"Coal dust in an underground mining environment has always been a health and safety issue, especially with longwall faces. Efforts to integrate a flooded bed scrubber within a longwall shearer are underway at the University of Kentucky (UK) in order to reduce worker exposure. Small scale physical modeling, along with numerical modeling and full-scale experimentation, are engineering tools being used by the authors for simulating operating conditions underground. Recent advances in affordable 3D printers offer a means for fabricating accurate, scale models for obtaining timely insights prior to building large, expensive test setups. Comparing scale-model results with those of numerical modeling, such as computational fluid dynamics (CFD), lends guidance and confidence in a proposed design. This paper discusses the small scale physical modeling of a longwall shearer with an incorporated flooded-bed dust scrubber in its operating environment. A tracer gas was used in the model in lieu of dust to measure dust-capture efficiency. Results obtained from the physical model are presented and compared with those of CFD model. The small scale model and the CFD results demonstrate good agreement. Dust capture results show the usefulness of the approach in advance of actual design implementation. INTRODUCTION Dust generation is an undesirable, but innate, byproduct of all mining processes. It is particularly problematic in underground coal mining, where coal dust poses potential hazards from two fronts – health and safety. Coal workers’ pneumoconiosis (CWP), commonly referred to as black lung, is a chronic lung disease that results from the long-term overexposure to respirable coal dust. Although the prevalence of CWP has steadily and significantly declined over the three decades following the Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969, a study by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH, 2008) indicates that significant health hazards associated with respirable dust still exist within the coal mining industry. In addition to being a health hazard, coal dust can also create a potentially catastrophic safety hazard. Dust that is not captured or removed at its source is suspended and transported throughout a mine by the ventilation airstream. This float dust is subsequently deposited on all mine surfaces along its travel path. Without adequate application of rock dust to these surfaces, forces from a localized methane ignition can reintroduce settled coal dust into the airstream creating an explosive mixture. Therefore, capturing and removing coal dust at its source mitigates the probability of two major hazards that continue to plague the mining industry."

The minerals sector plays a significant role in the development of many Southern African economies. In the Southern Africa region, as in other developing regions, economic development is seen as the key contributor to poverty alleviation and social upliftment. The significant economic contribution of the minerals sector may be reduced by negative impacts on the biophysical environment and on the communities where mines operate. A critical variable in determining the net contribution of mining companies to SD is the degree of transparency with which the companies operate. Transparency is increasingly emphasised as an essential aspect of good governance and SD, but it is also difficult to establish, and is a sensitive issue for mining companies as they compete with each other for minerals sales. Transparent reporting could ensure that the interests of all stakeholders are addressed as company data is subject to informal ‘auditing’ by any interested party. This paper assesses published reports of five companies over a number of years to establish whether it is possible to make an assessment of the companies’ contribution to SD.

The potential for methane and coal dust explosions in underground coal mining operations has increased in recent years with the introduction of fast coal-cutting machines. Dust explosions usually follow accidental ignition of a methane pocket. The dynamics of the explosion may be strong enough to pick up and disperse coal dust deposited on mine surfaces and ignite the mixture. A self-sustaining dust explosion can then develop and propagate at large distances. Ignition of dusts can result in a fire, and this may also lead to a dust explosion if the burning dust becomes airborne. Entrainment of dust and the resulting dust concentration in the gas stream are some factors which determine the features of the subsequent explosion and flame propagation. A model of coal dust transport in the gas stream due to the initial explosion is presented. In this model, equations for the conservation of mass, momentum and energy are coupled with the convective-diffusive model of dust transport. The system of equations is solved numerically to obtain dust concentration, convective velocity and gas pressure profiles.
