This paper describes the Boroo Gold Company (BGC) ore processing plant which is the first CIL/CIP plant in Mongolia. BGC is the first foreign investment in Mongolia since 1990 and follows the highest safety and environmental standards. Commissioning of the plant commenced in October 2003 and commercial production began in March 2004. Gold recovery is by gravity and conventional leaching and carbon adsorption. Detoxification of the leach tails is by the SO2/Air method before discharging the tails to the tailings pond. Ore types treated at Boroo are predominantly oxide with some transition ore as mining reaches the lower sulphide zone. There are several interesting technological issues and projects ongoing at Boroo which will also be discussed.

Coal cleaning can be effected by the bacterium Sulfolobus acidocaldarius, which in oxidizing sulfur and dissolving mineral matter requires carbon dioxide and oxygen; carbon dioxide as a carbon source and oxygen as an electron acceptor. The desulfurization of coal by thermophilic bacteria under elevated partial pressures of carbon dioxide and oxygen was studied at a total pressure of 1 atm. The partial pressure of carbon dioxide was varied over the range 0.00032 to 0.33 atm (0.00032, 0.007, 0.10, 0.33 atm), and the partial pressure of oxygen was varied over the range 0.14 to 0.40 atm (0.14, 0.21, 0.30, 0.40 atm). The maximum rate of coal desulfurization increased by 32%, from 9.0 to 11.9 mg S/1 hr, as air was enriched in carbon dioxide from its atmospheric level of 0.00032 atm to 0.10 atm. Enrichment with carbon dioxide up to 0.10 atm, at constant oxygen partial pressures, increased the desulfurization rate, but enrichment to 0.33 atm caused the rate to decrease. At constant carbon dioxide partial pressures, the desulfurization rate was maximum at oxygen partial pressures of 0.21 and 0.30 atm. At higher (0.40 atm) and lower (0.14 atm) oxygen partial pressures the rate decreaed by 9 to 20%. The desulfurization rate decreased by 58X, from 9.0 to 3.8 mg S/1 hr, when the air pressure was increased from 1 atm to 3 atm. The effects justify an economic analysis during design and operation of a commercial air feed in a process to desulfurize coal by microbial action.

Introduction The successful performance of a mine-wide fire detection system depends upon its ability to detect the presence of a fire rapidly and reliably. It should be sufficiently rapid so that there remains enough time to either safely evacuate a mine or successfully extinguish and control the fire or both. It should be reliable so that false alarms are minimized without sacrificing sensitivity or time response. Systems should also be durable enough to withstand the mine environment over long periods of time while maintaining a high degree of re1iability. Maintenance and calibration of the system should be simp1 e and not require the expenditure of excessive time and manpower to keep it operational. Sensitivity, reliability, and durability of mine fire sensors and their electronic support systems have been the subject of significant Bureau research within recent years. The bulk of this type of information, along with the reports from which the remainder of this paper is derived, can be found in the Bibliography. It suffices to say that there exist commercially available systems for use in mines. This paper addresses a strategy for the use of such sensors and systems. Many factors influence the design of a mine-wide fire detection system, such as the potential sources and modes of ignition, the types of combustibles involved and the quantities avai1able for fire growth and flame spread. Mine air ventilation influences the growth and spread of a fire and also serves to transport the products-of-combustion to other areas of a mine remote from the fire. Fire sensor alarm thresholds place limits on the sizes of fires that can be detected. The time to respond to a detected fire, either in terms of evacuation or control and extinguishment, place additional time constraints on the design of fire detection systems. These factors interact with each other, often in complex ways, and it is the definition and understanding of these factors and their interactions that hold the key to the design of adequate and re1iable fire detection systems. Our level of understanding of the problem has increased dramatically within recent years and it is the intent of this paper to discuss the progress that has been made and how the information can best be used to improve the level of fire detection in underground mines.

In November 1980 a combined airborne electro-magnetic (INPUT.) and magnetometer survey was conducted by Questor Surveys Limited in the State Line Area, Colorado-Wyoming. The survey was the result of discussions over a prolonged period between the authors and various investigators of the State kimberlite occurrences. As a result of these discussions and literature studies, it was decided that airborne geophysical methods would be potentially useful in the exploration for new kimberlite occurrences. The survey was designed by Paterson, Grant and Watson Limited and conducted by Questor Surveys Limited over an area in which more than 15 kimberlite bodies were known and on some of which ground geophysical surveys had been conducted. The survey was designed primarily to determine the airborne electromagnetic and magnetic responses of the known occurrences and to deter- mine whether these responses would be detectable under similar conditions in other parts of the State Line District and elsewhere.

Fujiwara Quarry had been operated by the "Glory-hole Benchcut" mining system. But because it became difficult to meet the expanding demand by this system, "Central- shaft MCP" mining system was introduced in 1979. This MCP is equipped with a hydraulic walking system manufactured for the first time in Japan. Nowadays "Central-shaft" mining is the common method at limestone quarry in Japan. In this method crushing facilities are usually installed at the bottom of the shaft. But at this quarry, MCP was adopted and installed on the quarry surface. Many MCPs are operated in foreign countries, but in Japan few examples exist. Normally, Japanese limestone deposits lie in high mountains, which is obviously inconvenient for MCP to walk in and around the quarry. This difficulty, however, was overcome at this quarry, and MCP has been operated satisfactorily and efficiently for about 2 years after it was installed. In order to overcome the difficulty, in "Cen¬tral-shaft MCP" mining system, two mining methods are employed, the one is "SLICE-DOWN" mining method, and the other is "BLOCK-CUT" mining method.

Three dimensional surface approximations are important means of evaluating physical and environmental factors that affect surface coal mining and reclamation. Computer approximated surfaces are projected as an array of square grid cells where individual cells define each parameter value respective to locations on the grid. Grid surfaces or grid cells within a surface can be compared or modified through application of standard mathematical functions. Surface approximations can be used to define the quantity and quality of marketable coal and to evaluate thickness and quality of overburden. Surface approximations also can be used to evaluate overburden swell factors wherein changes in post-mine topographic relief are related to expansion of unconsolidated materials in the backfill. Application of computer approximated surface to analysis of approximate original contour (AOC) standards allows an assessment of the quantity and geographical displacement of overburden and the distribution and numerical level of slope.

Mine fires have always been of great concern to mining engineers and their behavior has been studied for a long time. Although an abundance of observations exist, no satisfactory mathematical model for their interpretation and extrapolation has become known. The paper presented here tries to close this gap, making use of the laws of chemical kinetics, energy and momentum conservation. To overcome the mathematical difficulties, the fire zone is axially divided into segments and radially into sections, each one with an extension of only a few inches. Conditions in segments and sections are updated in time intervals of one second or less. To solve the large number of resulting equations, a numerical solution is performed. The model has so far been tried on timber fires. It confirms experimental observations on the ignition phases and equilibria of these fires.

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) is responsible for siting and constructing a licensed geologic repository for commercially generated high-level nuclear waste. Within DOE, the Office of Civilian Radioactive Waste Management (OCRWM) Program has this responsibility. To accomplish this mission, the OCRWM Program is engaged in a multidisciplined effort to identify, qualify, and develop repository sites. The current strategy of the OCRWM Program is to identify candidate repository sites in basalt, tuff, and salt and to develop exploratory shafts at those sites. Within OCRWM, the Salt Repository Project Office (SRPO) identified the salt site for the development of exploratory shafts. The proposed Exploratory Shaft Facility (ESF) in salt will have several primary purposes. The shafts will provide access to the reference repository horizon to permit in situ testing of the salt horizons in order to satisfy the following data acquisition needs: • Verification of the salt repository design parameters and validation of performance assessment models • Demonstration of the constructibility • Capability to adequately seal penetrations into the salt An exploratory shaft is required by 10 CFR Part 60 for the conduct of in situ testing at depth prior to submittal of a license application for construction authorization of a repository. Therefore, construction of an ESF will also facilitate the licensing process.

"Social License, the consent of the neighbors and community to develop and operate a mine, has received little attention until recently. Though social license is intangible, not having this relationship with the community carries operational and economic risk to a project, potentially including future impairment of the asset. Acquiring and maintaining social license is a long term personal relationship. It requires communication, commitment, consistency, and transparency. This presentation will review the building blocks to acquire and maintain a social license based on experiences with mining projects in Mexico. INTRODUCTION Mining has been a source of controversy for at least 500 years. “Since there has always been the greatest disagreement amongst men concerning metals and mining, some praising, others utterly condemning them” (Agricola 1556). In 2015 it is widely recognized that mineral resources and reserves must give due regard to the social license in order to operate. “Most commonly, the SLO is understood to refer to ‘the ongoing acceptance and approval of a [project] by local community members and other stakeholders that can affect its profitability’ (Moffat 2014).” “Social License to Operate has gained traction, in part, because it is also a concept which – while remaining poorly, technically defined – is generally easily and widely understood by community stakeholders.” (Bice 2014) A generation ago I learned that mining is based on a stable platform supported by three pillars, geology, mining and metallurgy. The three legged stool is a very stable structure.In 2015 it seems that we have added some other legs to the stool. The JORC code addresses “social, and governmental factors” (JORC 2012), and refers specifically to social license in Section 4 of the Report Template “Estimation and Reporting of Ore Reserves”. The Canadian CIM Guidelines refer to “environmental, legal and social data” (CIM 2003).Compared to these the 2014 SME Guide is positively verbose stating “a discussion of any potential social or community related requirements and plans for the project and the status of any negotiations or agreements with local communities,” (SME 2014) although in all cases the scope of this disclosure is left at the discretion of the Competent Person."

Approximately 50 percent of the uranium resource of the Free World is in deposits of Precambrian age, principally in lower Proterozoic conglomerates in Canada and South Africa (Uranium Resources, Joint Report, ENEA and IAEA, 1967). Most of the uranium resource of the United States is in Mesozoic and Cenozoic continental clastic sedimentary rocks that fill intracratonic basins. The Atomic Energy Commission is investigating the distribution of uranium and thorium in the Precambrian of the Western United States and the relationship of, time-space-facies patterns of uranium and thorium enrichment in the Precambrian to the major resources of uranium in the Mesozoic and Cenozoic host sedimentary rocks. This paper summarizes the results of preliminary studies of the Precambrian in the Southwestern United States including New Mexico, Arizona, southern Nevada, and southern California (Fig. 1). The host rock provenances for the major uranium resources in epigenetic deposits of Mesozoic and Cenozoic age in the Western United States were in areas of extensive Precambrian exposure along the eastern margin of the Phanerozoic geosynclinal belt (Fig. 2). Mesozoic continental clastic sediments in the Colorado Plateau contain about two-thirds of the uranium resource of the United States. These sediments formed from detritus derived from the Mogollon highland in the Southwestern United States where the Precambrian was extensively exposed (Stewart, et al., 19593 McKee, et al., 1959; McKee, et al., 1956; Craig, et al., 1955) (Fig. 2). A genetic relationship may exist between this provenance and the major uranium deposits of the Colorado Plateau. The Precambrian might be equally important in the genesis of uranium deposits whether the most important process in the formation of these deposits was the leaching of low-order intrinsic amounts of uranium from Precambrian granite or from Mesozoic pyroclastics derived from syntexis of the Precambrian basement rocks (Malan, 1968).

Kobe Steel, Ltd. improved the quality of iron ore pellets for blast furnace burdens when it enlarged its blast furnaces. However. there still remained room to increase reducibility at high temperatures for better blast furnace operation. In particular, it was still necessary to lessen the reduction retardation above 1200?C. In the last few years, by employing iron ore and additives of optimum size structure, large pore pellets with a high porosity have been obtained. By using this method. Kobe Steel. Ltd. has accomplished the technology to produce pellets with remarkably high reducibility.

Utah statute defines sovereign lands as "those lands lying below the ordinary high water mark of navigable bodies of water at the date of statehood, and owned by the state by virtue of its sovereignty." The lands within the bed of Great Salt Lake (GSL) are, by this definition, sovereign lands, acquired at statehood in 1896 in accordance with the "equal footing" doctrine, granting each state control and ownership of navigable waters and the lands underneath those waters within its borders. Under public trust doctrine, the state, as trustee for the people, bears responsibility for preserving and protecting the right of the public to use of the waters for navigation, commerce, fishing, recreation, and wildlife habitat. Also by statute, sovereign lands are defined as "state lands," to be managed by "multiple use sustained-yield principles." The Division of Forestry, Fire and State Lands is given management authority for sovereign lands and, as manager, has responsibility to prepare comprehensive plans, initiate studies of the lake and its resources, implement comprehensive plans through state and local entities, and coordinate the activities of various divisions within the Department of Natural Resources (DNR). The Division of Forestry, Fire and State Lands also has responsibility for management of mineral leasing on sovereign lands. The many resources on the lake--water, minerals, wildlife, recreation, archeological and historical values--are managed by as many state agencies which occasionally creates conflicts. The brines of GSL contain several ions that crystalize into valuable minerals during evaporation. The major ions in the lake are, in order of relative abundance, chloride, sodium, sulfate, magnesium, and potassium. Mineral products which are currently extracted from lake brines are sodium chloride, magnesium chloride brine which can be sold as flake magnesium chloride or further processed into magnesium and chlorine gas, and potassium sulfate. Mineral products which have potential for extraction include gypsum, sodium sulfate, and trace amounts of lithium, boron, and bromine. The GSL contained an estimated 4.3 billion short tons (st) (3.9 billion metric tons [mt]) of dissolved salts in 1998. Utah Geological Survey (UGS) estimates of the dissolved salt content in GSL have fluctuated from 4.0 to 5.5 billion st (3.6 to 5.0 billion mt) due to the dynamic conditions in the lake as salts are precipitated and redissolved, and due to the diversion of brines from GSL, such as the West Desert Pumping Project. The lake has four areas of varying salinity, separated by dikes or other man-made structures: north arm and Stansbury Bay brines at near saturation (25 to 27 percent total dissolved solids [TDS]); the main body of the south arm with concentrations ranging from 7 to 15 percent TDS as lake elevations fluctuate; the waters in Farmington Bay at approximately 3 to 5 percent TDS; and Bear River Bay at <1 to 7 percent TDS. The percent TDS in Bear River Bay fluctuates with lake level, and changes in Bear River inflow. The transfer of salts from the south arm to the north arm has raised questions about the viability of the mineral and brine shrimp industries. The UGS and the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) continue to monitor salinities at designated sites on the lake to document changing lake salinity. A recurrent theme is that placement of dikes and diversions can have significant and rapid impacts on various conditions in the lake. Hydrocarbon resources on the lake are significant, but presently undeveloped. The hydrocarbons are low gravity (4 to 9 degree API) and tar-like, contain high nitrogen concentrations, and up to 12 percent sulfur. The unusual characteristics of the oil have been the subject of studies by chemists at Weber State University and University Louis Pasteur de Strasbourg. However, these resources are difficult, and at present, uneconomic to extract using current technology because of the nature of the hydrocarbons, and production in "an offshore, highly saline environment." Oolitic sand deposits make up many of the beaches and shorelines around the lake. Because of their high calcium carbonate content, oolites have been used by Magnesium Corporation of America (MagCorp) and its predecessors for acid neutralization and dike construction. Oolites are also used in very minor amounts in flower drying. The Utah Division of Oil, Gas and Mining reports up to 130,000 st (118,000 mt) mined annually by MagCorp from U.S. Bureau of Land Management (BLM) lands adjacent to GSL. Currently, there are twelve producing mineral leases which generated slightly more than $1,000,000 in royalties during calendar year 1998. IMC Kalium Ogden Corp. (IMC Kalium) produces potassium sulfate and magnesium chloride from brines concentrated through solar evaporation in Bear River Bay and Clyman Bay. By-product sodium chloride is transferred to IMC Salt, which packages and sells the salt. MagCorp produces magnesium metal from brines concentrated in Stansbury Bay. Cargill Salt produces sodium chloride from brines provided by MagCorp under a lease agreement. Morton Salt produces salt at the southeast end of Stansbury Island. Lastly, North Shore Limited produces cocentrated brines for use in dietary and mineral/vitamin supplements near Spring Bay in the north arm of the lake. Producers of magnesium, potash, and salt from GSL contribute significantly to the value of metals and industrial minerals in Utah. Together these companies contribute approximately $240 million in gross value, or 18 percent of the value of the state&apos;s nonfuel mineral production. Most of this production is exported.

In this paper, the authors attempt to develop engineering based approaches for estimating safety factors against pillar and floor failures and predicting likelihood of subsidence events over abandoned coal mines in Illinois. There are two critical problems involved in the analysis: determination of geotechnical properties, and consideration of time effect. The authors attempt to solve the problems by generating hypotheses, which are used to modify existing engineering models for estimating pillar and floor safety factors. The modified models are validated using data from two well established databases of subsidence events over active and abandoned mines in Illinois. The data analysis suggests that most of the trough type subsidence events in Illinois were caused by floor failures rather than pillar failures. The subsidence incubation period seems to be directly related to initial floor safety factors at the time of mining. This correlation can be used to predict the likelihood of subsidence and to assess subsidence risks within both spatial and temporal contexts where detailed mine maps are available.

Simulation modeling of portions of two platinum mines using General Purpose Simulation Software (GPSS/H™) is presented in this paper. Both mines, located in the Bushveld Igneous Complex PIC) of South Africa, exploit Merensky and UG2 reef horizons, which are processed separately and therefore handled individually from the stope face to surface, requiring duplication of storage arrangements and batch operation of transport facilities. The first simulation assignment concerns the upgrading of a shaft system operating exclusively on Merensky ore, to hoist UG2 ore and increase production. The second assignment comprises a simulation of rock flow from the stope face to surface by way of tramming, inclined conveying and vertical hoisting. Development ends and stope boxholes were modeled down to individual hoppers (cars) demonstrating the versatility of the GPSS/H™ language.

The STG integrated method of grouting can be divided into the several phases as outlined in preceding chapters. For convenience in describing technical procedures, they can be grouped as: 1. Investigations in non-geotechnical, exploration bore¬holes. 2. Drilling the holes necessary for geotechnical investiga¬tions and for grouting. 3. Conducting appropriate hydrogeologic tests in those holes and consequent calculations. 4. The preparation of a clay mortar. 5. The preparation of a clay-cement grout with additives. 6. The injection of the grout. 7. Checking the quality of the grout curtain. Items 2, 4, 5 and 6 are discussed below. These activities contain the procedural aspects of grouting. 7.1 DRILLING GROUT HOLES Grout holes belong to a very select class of drillholes. The necessary drilling equipment must enable the operator to drill the holes in inclined, twisting directions. In addi¬tion, the equipment must permit drilling under structurally and hydrogeologically complex conditions. The equipment must permit the operator to conduct specific testing activi¬ties in the drillholes. These activities include hydrodynamic analyses, flowmetric analysis, and the installation and re¬moval of deflectors, packers, grouting plugs, casings, lin¬ers, pumping facilities and other work. As explained in Chapters 5 and 6, the grouting of sat¬urated rock is conducted both through holes drilled from the surface and through holes drilled from the face of a shaft, drift, or tunnel. The drilling of grout holes from the surface can be carried out by an aggregate of equipment that can be the same equipment used for drilling exploration boreholes. Depending on the projected depth of the holes, the STG ZIF- 1200MR and ZIF-650 drilling rigs (or modifications of them) are used. The SKB-4, SKB-5 and SKB-7 high-output drilling rigs (workover rigs) have been used in recent years. The STG BMP-24 drilling rigs are used for carrying out the descent-lifting operations for drilling holes from the sur¬face. In a number of cases, the UKB-500C, URB-3AM and URB-2A power-fed drilling equipment is used for drilling holes from the surface. It should be noted that the drilling of grout holes usually requires an electric drive assembly. Drilling with diesel drive assemblies would be used only to preclude the possi¬bility of losing electric power during drilling operations. Turbine drilling would be used only for appropriate techni¬cal-economic reasons. The selection of the grout hole design is determined by the hydrogeological and structural geological conditions at the site as interpreted in Chapters 2 and 3. The design of grout holes must be as simple as possible in order to min¬imize costs. Hole design guidelines can be adopted as a basis for this purpose, unless site-specific conditions require otherwise. The mouth of the drillhole must be outfitted with a guide-pipe having a length of at least 2 m and an outside diameter from 219 to 234 mm. The upper part of the hole must be attached by a jig consisting of borehole casing that has a diameter ranging from 108 to 146 mm. The length of the jig h is determined by the equation [ ] where k = 1.1 to 1.2 is the load factor; P,, is the injection pressure of the grout into the mouth of the drillhole; D is the external diameter of the jig pipe; m = 0.6 to 0.7 is the work condition factor; T[ ].1 MPa is the bonding value of the rock cemented to the jig. The grout hole is drilled from the jig shoe to the de¬signed depth using a rock-crushing bit with a diameter of 93 mm or more. However in complex hydrogeological condi¬tions when the shaft intersects unstable rock, other hole designs can be used. The diameter of grout holes must permit an aggregate of investigations to be conducted in them using down-hole borehole geophysical and flowmetric logging instruments. It is necessary to cement the casing strings reliably in the grout holes, thereby permitting the injection of the grout under high pressure through the pres¬sure tight mouth of the borehole. Technological details for drilling grout holes such as the rotational rate of the drill bit, the axial load on the rock¬crushing bit, and the drilling fluid flow rate are optimized for the specific rock-hydrogeological conditions largely by experience. The hole diameter and type of rock crushing bit are important variables in these details of drilling. It is advisable to drill holes using water as the drilling fluid. However in those cases where the hole walls are unstable or under very high ground water pressure, the use of a well¬ engineered drilling mud should not be precluded. Unfortu¬nately, drilling mud can influence test results. When steeply dipping fractures with inclination angles of more than 60 to 70° are encountered, it is necessary to drill guided, inclined grout holes. The Prospectors and Developers Association of Canada (PDAC) was established in 1932 in response to proposed regulations that would have threatened prospectors in Ontario. From there, the association grew to represent the interests of Canada?s mineral exploration and development industry. The PDAC?s mission statement reads: ?The PDAC exists to protect and promote the interests of the Canadian mineral exploration sector and to ensure a robust mining industry in Canada. The PDAC will encourage the highest standards of technical, environment, safety and social practices in Canada and internationally. ?Today, the PDAC?s 6,000 individual members include prospectors, developers, geoscientists, consultants, mining executives and students. In addition, the association?s membership includes 950 corporate members, representing senior, mid-sized and junior mining companies in addition to organizations that provide services and equipment to the mining industry. In 2010, the PDAC adopted its e3 Plus principles, a framework to guide its membership in responsible exploration.

When Dick Robbins asked me to give a keynote address, I felt it might be in order to review some of the practices and techniques used in tunneling and work up to some of the concepts now used to mine and construct tunnels. Needless to say, there have been many changes in tunneling technology and also many changes in the Safety Codes controling them. An example of this latter change was the fact that in 1931, my father excavated the Owyhee Tunnel No.5 with gas locomotives. He was able to do it because there was no natural gas in the rock and the ventilation system was designed to free the tunnel atmosphere from powder and exhaust fumes. Today OSHA rules would never permit gas locomotives underground, although there were no incidents on this particular project. One of my first tunnels, as Project Manager, was the Clear Creek Tunnel for the Bureau of Reclamation. Our method of handling muck was the Conway Muckers. This unit was a valuable improvement to the hand mucking of previous generations. The Conway was also used in our Navajo Project, in New Mexico. Unlike the Clear Creek project, where water was one of our main problems - up to 7,200 gallons per minute, at a pressure of 395 pounds per square inch - in the Navajo Tunnel, we had a mixed face which caused a major problem with our support system. In one of the Navajo Tunnels, there was a major cave-in, when the squeezing shale came in during an attempt to strengthen the support system. Although moving shale was not a constant problem, there were areas where the shale was five to six feet above the spring line.

The evaluation of Abandoned Mined Lands can involve the investigation of very large areas of land. Often, the locations of critical areas or impending problems are unknown, and are not easily identified from the surface. Microseismic monitoring has been demonstrated to be effective in identifying potential instabilities and active movement in mines from distances of several kilometers. By placing sensors in proximity to, or in contact with, a high acoustic conductance layer close to the mined zone, large areas can be monitored for potential problems with a minimum of sensors and drillholes. As part of a U.S. Bureau of Mines contract, a prototype system was developed to identify and locate potential instability problems over wide areas of land. Once a problem area has been located, the system can be used to analyze the type of the problem, its size, relative degree of instability, and potential for damage. Continued monitoring after application of remedial measures can effectively determine the efficacy of those measures.

The RockVision3D™ seismic tomographic system, developed by NSA Engineering, Inc., offers substantial benefits over conventional geologic/stress-detection methods and has been used successfully in coal mines worldwide. Tomographic images, produced economically and in near-real time, are easy to interpret, allowing mine operators to deal with potential hazards on a day-to-day basis.
