Today, aggregate producers in the Denver Metropolitan area, herein defined as Denver and surrounding communities in Adams, Arapahoe, Boulder, Douglas and Jefferson Counties, are scrambling to secure their future reserves. The Denver market is somewhat unique among the larger metropolitan markets in that the source of needed aggregate for the future is very much undecided. 2. Present Aggregate Resources Presently, the annual consumption of aggregate resources in the Denver Metropolitan area amounts to approximately 16 million tons of sand, gravel and crushed stone of which the later accounts for about 20%. Based on population growth projections for the front range, by the year 2000 the annual rate of consumption for aggregate in the Denver Metro area could be in the 25+ million ton range.

During 1996, US mines produced 319 t (10.26 million or) of gold metal valued at $4 billion. At yearend, mine reserves were estimated to be 4.7 kt (151 million oz) of gold metal. Almost all of the production was from western states. Nevada accounted for about 68% of national production. Information for this article was obtained through annual reports of mining companies, US Geological Survey (USGS) databases and other public sources. Table 1 shows production and reserves by mine. It divides the mines into two categories. These are producing mines whose primary product is gold, and producing mines for which gold is a byproduct or coproduct. The mines listed in Table 1 accounted for more than 98% of US gold production during 1996. Except the Daisy Mine, the table does not include mines that produced less than 31 kg/a (1,000 oz/year). In practice, frothers are selected following general guidenlies and verification by laboratory and/or plant flotation tests. The terms “powerful” or “selective,” which are commonly used to characetrize frothers, have intuitive rather than scientific meaning. A research program has been set out to study fundamental properties of the flotation frothers and to identify the tests which can provide information needed to characterize and classify such flotation agents.

As part of a cooperative effort between the US Bureau of Mines and the Florida Institute of Phosphate Research (FIPR), with input from the phosphate industry, the conversion of phosphogypsum to sulfur is being investigated. The proposed process incorporates a thermal reduction of phosphogypsum to calcium sulfide (CaS) and a hydrometallurgical treatment to convert calcium sulfide to ammonium bisulfide (NH4SH), which is then oxidized using a catalyst to produce elemental sulfur. The paper summarizes the results of continuing laboratory studies using an activated carbon catalyst which was loaded with sulfur through oxidation of ammonium bisulfide solution. The extraction of the sulfur that forms in situ on the catalyst is a key area in the development of the sulfur recovery process. Two approaches for removing the sulfur are being investigated: (1) thermal treatment to volatilize sulfur. and (2) leaching the sulfur using liquid anhydrous ammonia. The research has shown that it is technically feasible to recover over 90% of the sulfur from the carbon by either volatilization or ammonia leaching. Locked cycle testing has demonstrated that the carbon has the potential to be recycled after ammonia leaching.

The persistent requirement for methods and equipment capable of detecting hazardous anomalies in advance of underground mining has led to the development by the U.S. Bureau of Mines of a directional radar probe. The probe operates from boreholes drilled from the surface into the underground region to be mined. The engineering model radar was completed in early 1982 and field demonstration tests were performed in May of that year at a selected coal mine. Preliminary in-situ electromagnetic tests were performed at several candidate coal mines to evaluate the radio-frequency characteristics of the coal. A coal mine in New Mexico was selected on the basis of low EM propagation losses in the coal and the presence of an extensive coal seam displacing fault as a radar target. The borehole radar was operated in two vertical boreholes which intersected the coal seam at approximately 25 and 40 feet from the fault interface. Radar reflections from the coal/ rock interface were detected in both tests. Underground tests in a horizontal borehole in the coal were less successful because of interfering reflections. Additional borehole-to-borehole tests were performed with a separate ground penetrating electromagnetic system to obtain radar range calibration data. The coal was found to be bounded by very lossy roof and floor sandstone and shale while propagation through the coal seam was obtained at distances up to 175 feet between test boreholes. Coal seam continuity was indicated by the hole-to-hole experiments through a section of the seam previously thought to be completely cut off by the fault.

Object-oriented technologies have been developed to more closely model the way we think about the world and our natural approach to solving problems. Higher levels of abstraction, generalization and classification are benefits of an object-oriented approach. Object-oriented programming, design, and expert systems are part of this technology which is shaping the future of real-time supervisory control. Goals of real-time supervisory control systems include: minimizing variations in process operations, improving efficiency, maximizing production, and implementing procedures for starting and stopping the process. Incorporating object-oriented technology in design, development and implementation of real-time supervisory control systems provides new opportunities for these tasks. "The U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has been researching refuge alternatives (RAs) since 2007. RAs typically have built-in pressure relief valves (PRVs) to prevent the unit from reaching unsafe pressures. The U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration requires that these valves vent the chamber at a maximum pressure of 1.25 kPa (0.18 psi, 5.0 in. H2O), or as specified by the manufacturer, above mine atmospheric pressure in the RA. To facilitate PRV testing, an instrumented benchtop test fixture was developed using an off-the-shelf centrifugal blower and ductwork. Relief pressures and flow characteristics were measured for three units: (1) a modified polyvinyl chloride check valve, (2) an off-the-shelf brass/cast-iron butterfly check valve and (3) a commercially available valve that was designed specifically for one manufacturer’s steel prefabricated RAs and had been adapted for use in one mine operator’s built-in-place RA. PRVs used in tent-style RAs were not investigated. The units were tested with different modifications and configurations in order to check compliance with Title 30 Code of Federal Regulations, or 30 CFR, regulations. The commercially available relief valve did not meet the 30 CFR relief pressure specification but may meet the manufacturer’s specification. Alternative valve designs were modified to meet the 30 CFR relief pressure specification, but all valve designs will need further design research to examine survivability in the event of a 103 kPa (15.0 psi) impulse overpressure during a disaster. BackgroundThe Mine Improvement and New Emergency Response Act of 2006, known as the Miner Act (U.S. Department of Labor, 2006), was enacted in the wake of three mine accidents involving explosions or fire that claimed 19 lives that year. Intended to help improve underground coal mine accident preparedness, the Miner Act includes provisions that target mine safety issues in areas such as emergency response planning; adoption of new technology; training and education; and mine safety standards enforcement. Section 13 of the Miner Act specifically directed the U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) to provide for research into the effectiveness and viability of refuge alternatives (RAs) for underground coal mines, and the U.S. Department of Labor to act on the results of such research, as appropriate. These mandates culminated in the 2009 adoption of changes to the Title 30 Code of Federal Regulations, or 30 CFR, mining health and safety regulations (U.S. Department of Labor, 2008), requiring underground coal mines to supply mine emergency RAs and associated components so as to provide a life-sustaining environment for persons trapped underground. Such RAs can be either selfcontained mobile units or built-in-place facilities. The regulatory changes also include provisions establishing requirements for the approval of RAs and their components by the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA), among which are numerous criteria for providing a safe breathable atmosphere under positive pressure within the RAs. One criterion for maintaining a safe RA atmosphere is the inclusion of an air pressure relief valve that will activate at a maximum of 1.25 kPa (specified as 0.18 psi, or approximately 5.0 in. H2O), or as specified by the RA manufacturer, above mine atmospheric pressure in the RA (U.S. Department of Labor, 2008)."

The United States on a daily basis no consumes about 15MM barrels (2.38 x 106m3) of oil; 5MM (0.79 x 106 m3) of this is imported. This compares tai a daily consumption of 18MM (2.86 x 106 m3) in 1980 when we imported 8MM (1.27 x 106 m3). We are producing the 10MM barrels (1.59 x 106 m3 ) of conventional oil at home from what amounts to just 2% of our domestic energy reserves. Nearly 90% of our total domestic energy reserves occurs in solid forms such as coal, oil shale, and tar sands; this is more than enough to meet our needs for the next 100 years. Worldwide, oil shale is second only to coal as a potential source of energy and the U.S. has approximately one-half of the world oil shale reserves which average over 25 gallons per ton (10.43 x 10-2 L/kg). Since the United States has immense oil shale resources, including some of the richest in the world, and since oil shale produces a superior transportation fuel, it would seem logical that the U.S. would be prudently developing this domestic resource. Unfortunately, despite over 50 years of research and a number of false starts, there is not a commercial shale oil industry in place today. There are a number of recurring roadblocks which have hindered private industry's efforts to develop oil shale and we will look at some of these.

The Coteau Properties Company's Freedom Mine is a surface lignite mining operation utilizing large draglines, trucks and shovels, tractor-scrapers, and bulldozers to uncover a single coal seam. In 1989, a work order system was instituted to record data by equipment type, cost, productivity, and distance, and to provide historical information for planning the most efficient and economic use of each equipment type in the mining operation. This report explains how the work order system was initiated, what data is tracked, and how the data is utilized for equipment and project scheduling.

This paper presents the development of ultrasonic grinding technology for material and mineral processing. The principles underlying this new technology, as well as their implementation in two laboratory scale devices are described in detail. Ultrasonic grinding experiment results are discussed with respect to operating variables and the achieved product sizes. Special attention has been given to the electrical energy consumption of the grinder, and an attempt to compare its efficiency with tumbling mills has been made. A mechanical system capable of measuring the specific grinding energy is also described.

With the increasing need to exercise better control over mill circuits has come a requirement to develop rapid, accurate means of measuring circuit parameters. One of the most important parameters is the assay of the material in the circuit (or about to be introduced to the circuit). To date, most on-stream analysis has been performed using X-ray fluorescence equipment. Neutron activation offers an alternative method in certain circumstances, and one which has several interesting advantages. Recognizing the need for a simple, safe neutron activation unit suitable for on-stream analysis in the mineral industries, Atomic Energy of Canada Limited has designed, built and tested the SHERLOCK system. One prototype (SHERLOCK I) is located in Ottawa and is now used primarily in research. A second prototype (SHERLOCK III) is located in Vancouver at the laboratories of B.C. Research. This unit is being used for some development research and for evaluating the unit in specific applications. Most of the work completed to date has been aimed at proving the technique and in developing some of the parameters needed to design systems for a milling plant. Funding for the work has been through research grants and through sponsor¬ship by interested companies.

Reagents of biological origin are becoming more and more important in the field of metallurgy, especially in the areas of mineral processing and hydrometallurgy. The advantage of lower operating cost over physical and chemical processes and the capacity to operate with low grade ores make the microbial processes further attractive. In this paper, the role of microbes directly as a reagent and microbially produced reagents or secreted metabolites in mineral processing and hydrometallurgy will be discussed. Adhesion of microbes to surfaces is known to alter the hydrophobicity of minerals. Applications include surface modification to impart hydrophobicity or hydrophilicity on sulfide or non-sulfide minerals and dissolution of precious metals. Microbes can also perform the role of flocculating agents. Biosorption of toxic and heavy metal ions by microbes are finding application in treating tailing ponds. Mechanisms associated with the use for microbially produced reagents are discussed along with some recent results.

Location Xiaolangdi is located in the Henan province of the People’s Republic of China. The distance between Xiaolangdi and the capital of Henan, Zhengzhou, is about200 km. Xiaolangdi is located on the Yellow River at the end of its big characteristic knee. It can be easily found on the map by locating Luoyang. The closest big city to Xiaolangdi is Luoyang (about 45 km). This city has about1 million inhabitants and is well known also to foreigners for its famous historical past. It has been the capital of China through 10 dynasties in former times. Overview The Xiaolangdi Multipurpose Dam Project is located at the last gorge of the middle reach of the Yellow River. The main purposes of the project are: -flood control, - ice jam control, - sediment control, - irrigation, - water supply, - hydroelectric power generation. The project consists of many structures, these are 10 intake towers, 9 flood &sediment tunnels, 6 power tunnels, 1 underground powerhouse, and 1 zone dearth and rockfill dam with a sloping impervious core, 154m high, with a crest length of 1317m. The powerhouse mainly features 6 turbine and generator units of 300 MW, totalling installed capacity of 1800 MW and annual energy output of5.1 GWH. The total storage capacity of the reservoir is 12.65 billion m³ of which 5.1billion m³ is live storage. Of the Yellow River drainage basin, 694,000 km2 or 92,3percent is located upstream of Xiaolangdi Dam Site. Xiaolangdi is located in a key position for flood and sediment control of the Yellow River. Upon completion, Xiaolangdi Dam and Reservoir will effectively mitigate catastrophic floods, the control level will be increased from the present less than 100-year return period up to 10,000 years. A presentation of this project was given previously at the SHE Annual Meeting, Denver Colorado February 23-27, 1987. The project concerns the development of in situ recovery of borate products from a deep-seated colemanite deposit in California. The deposit contains some 147 million tons of borate ore containing 6.4% boron oxide (B2O3). This paper involves the numerous changes in the process that has taken place since that first presentation. This paper further explains the reasons for these changes which are primarily environmentally based and secondarily capital requirements related.

It was shown previously that chalcopyrite could be floated without using a collector when the ore samples were treated with small amounts of sodium sulfide (Na2S). The role of this reducing agent was considered to be one of a cleaning agent to remove the hydrophilic surface oxidation products. It was later found, however, that the collectorless flotation could be obtained only under slightly oxidizing conditions. This might suggest that collectorless flotation is not due to the clean surface but to the elemental sulfur which may be present as an incipient oxidation product. Therefore, a search for the presence of elemental sulfur has been made by means of ESCA, mass spectrometry, and solvent extraction followed by W spectrophotometric analysis. On the basis of these results, the mechanisms of collectorless flotation are discussed.

The 2-D code FIDHELM has been used to simulate conditions in piles of pyritic material with vertical dimensions of 20 to 70 m and a horizontal dimension of 500m. Those properties of the pile and its external environment (wind, temperature) important in determining the time and space dependence of sulfide oxidation, have been identified. A prescription to evaluate the overall sulfide oxidation rate in a pile of known volume but variable geometry has been developed.

Mountain Top Removal (MTR) mining started in West Virginia nearly thirty years ago. This surface mining method can extract multiple coal seams as thin as a few inches thick with total recovery and minimum rock dilution in very steep mountainous terrain. It is highly efficient even if coal seams are in close proximity and small in aerial extent. Consequently, MTR has been widely used in the Central Appalachian Coalfield (mainly Kentucky, Tennessee, Virginia and West Virginia) for the past thirty years with great success. In that respect, there has been no demand for research and little scientific research has been performed to investigate its impacts on the surroundings in the history of MTR mining. However, in the past two years the debate over the MTR mining has grown quickly and in times become very intensely. This paper describes chronologically the issues raised by various parties, legal actions, its impacts on mining permit application and research projects developed to address the issues.

Leo-potpourri, was selected as the title to this paper for several reasons. First, it is a fascinating word--not looking like it sounds or sounding like it looks. It also allows for a great degree of flexibility in designing a presentation around it. Further, it has become popular to use this eco hyphen something pattern. We hear of eco-mania, eco-hysteria and the like. Lastly, in this era of intense environmental concern, two of the principle elements on which the integrity of our efforts must be equated are ecology and economics. Accordingly, the term "Eco-potpourris" allows me to roam at will through the great number of considerations that make up this environmental issue. Whereas only a few years ago the subject of environment and environmental control had low visibility with the public, today it competes as the focus of attention with the many other popular social issues of our time. The program content here at this meeting, for example, is liberally represented by papers dealing with one or more aspects of environmental concern. If one would look at the 1964 program, in contrast, I would expect that no more than possibly one or two papers covered this subject and even then that those papers dealt principally with the environmental aspect of occupational health. It is gratifying that the program at this meeting demonstrates a serious awareness to a broad spectrum of environmental concerns. It would be a mistake, of course, to believe that this clamor for a quality environment is a "flash in the pan" that will soon subside. "This article describes, through the presentation of five cases-history, technological advances that the Authors together with Tunneling Contractors devised for coping with adverse geotechnical conditions. It is believed that by introducing these new elements in a method that has proven its value in Italy and abroad for the last 40 years, the umbrella arch method, due to its versatility and simplicity, can become a universal method for conventional tunneling in very poor ground conditions. After a description of common faults and mistakes in applying the method, 5 projects are presented which demonstrate that self-drilling pipes give excellent results in terms of performance a zero volume loss, while, function of the ground conditions the various grouting mixtures used, such as expansive jet-injected cement-base grouts and bi-component resins, extend the use of the umbrella-arch in variety of grounds even in presence of water-bearing lenses. The case-histories provide successful applications in different conditions.BASIC FEATURES OF UMBRELLA ARCH METHODThe umbrella arch method provides a short support of the tunnel vault just ahead of the excavation face. The method foresees the drilling and installation of peripheral, sub-horizontal steel pipes in the ground, followed by their grouting. The umbrella arch method is also known as forepoling, steel pipe umbrella, reinforced protective umbrella or simply “umbrella”. The umbrella arch method does not have a static function because the immediate stabilization of tunnel section is entrusted to the internal shell of steel ribs and shotcrete. The “umbrella” provides a pre-support of the excavation which has to be stable for an adequate length and duration permitting the installation of the next steel rib and shotcrete under conditions of safety (Figure 1).The umbrella-arch provides pre-reinforcement of poor ground around the tunnel perimeter in a simple and flexible manner that is adaptable to different ground conditions. In fact, it is possible to vary the number and length of pipes, the distance between them, their diameter and thickness as well as the overlapping length of two succeeding umbrella arches. The versatility of the umbrella arch technique allows its application to: clay deposits, granular alluvial deposits, moraine and debris materials even when containing large blocks, heavily jointed, foliated and tectonically disturbed rock masses."
