The Code for Environmental Management of Marine Mining (the Code) was adopted in 2001 by the International Marine Minerals Society (IMMS) following extensive and wide-ranging consultation, and updated in 2002. The Code provides a framework and benchmarks for development and implementation of an environmental program for a marine exploration or extraction site by marine mining companies, and for stakeholders in governments, NGOs and communities in evaluating actual and proposed applications of environmental programs at marine mining sites. The Code provides for its review by IMMS after five years, with a focus toward possible modifications based on experience with its implementation and in light of developments in the field of marine mining and associated environmental practices, in consultation with the marine mining industry and with other stakeholders at marine mining operations. As the review of the Code is now due, to begin the process, this paper will present an analysis of the Code and initial suggestions for its modification. Experiments using an optically polished Pyrex disk and aqueous dodecylammonium acetate (DAA) films showed that the velocity with which the films recede increases markedly if the runs are repeated at short time intervals, where equilibrium cannot be reattained. This results from DAA molecules being desorbed from the disappearing liquid-air interface and being deposited on the solid-air interface being formed. Controlled experiments with Pyrex particles in a modified Hallimond tube showed a similar increase in flotation rate, again due to excess adsorption of DAA molecules that were transferred to the solid-air interface from the bubble on contact.

In recent years, much work has been done to explain the nature of the gold-carbon adsorption mechanism. The benefits of a sound theoretical basis has the obvious application to gold adsorption and elution industrial processes. Unfortunately, the lack of a clear agreement on the mechanism has provided no clear direction towards process innovation and optimization. Jones' (1989) work has gone a long way towards clarifying the specie of gold adsorbed (and thus the chemistry required to remove it). Since the development of hot caustic and cyanide elution, the kinetics have been accelerated by the application of pressure to increase elution temperatures beyond the boiling point at atmospheric pressure. However, the traditional reagent content of 15 g/L NaOH and 5-10g/L NaCN has remained largely unchanged. This is in spite of work that has shown that the presence of cyanide is not required for the elution process to take place (Adams, 1986; Adams; 1989; Jones, 1989). Adams (1989) has also compared NaOH elution rates with and without cyanide. He found improvement with the use of cyanide and a synergistic effect with the use of both. Dupont has successfully incorporated a Floatex Density Separator into its wet-gravity operations for the recovery of zircon from titanium tailings. Results indicate that the Floatex achieved a zircon recovery of approximately 95% while rejecting similar amounts of quartz and other gangue minerals. Additionally, a unit capacity approaching 16 tonnes/hr/m2 was achieved. Results also show that the alumino-silicates can be separated into other product streams that will further improve process economics and minimize waste material. The improved plant feed grade provided by the Floatex has allowed for either an increase in overall plant capacity and/or final product grade. This paper will present the findings from the in-plant study.

An algorithm used by the US Coast Guard to find lost objects is utilized to optimally allocate exploration efforts during initial stages of an exploration program. Based on classical search theory, the algorithm assumes a target probability distribution function, a detection func¬tion, and a cost function. The three Junctions are analogous to delineating areas of possible mineralization, choice of exploration methods, and exploration budget. Application of the algorithm is shown for a hypothetical target distribution. Using the maximum number of field days available as the cost function, the optimal allocation of effort is shown for different exploration methods, e.g. electromagnetic survey and induced polarization. The adaption of the algorithm for the exploration process is discussed.

The E h potential during of a iron reducing bacteria such as Aquaspirillum Magnetotacticum (A.M.) can be predicted by a growth model. It also reflects the adsorption of Fe+2 Cu+2 and Mn +2 ions, that can be incorporated into magnetic material called magnetosomes. The Ferric ion concentration during controlled growth of Thiobacillus Ferrooxidans (T.F.) is a function of the bacteria population curve, while A. M. ferrous ion concentration is a function of the integral of the population curve. Charting of the redox potential of T.F. during batch oxidation of refractory ores such as pyrite and pyrrhotite can be helpful to establishing onset and rate the bulk bio-oxidation rate. The onset of biooxidation is marked by an increase in Fe +3 ions that can be correlated with increased growth due to adsorbed electrons.

A survey of 1250 surface and underground coal mines across the United States was made according to a stratified sampling technique based on national coal districts. A total of 171 responses (13.7% response rate) have been returned and summarized, giving a picture of computer usage in the coal industry. Overall, 63.5% of the respondents use computers, but the percent varied from 100% for large mines to only 44.1% for small mines. As expected, a proliferation of microcomputers has pervaded the industry. Importantly, in spite of the high usage of computers in the industry, sophisticated engineering applications have not yet burgeoned.

I am not a member of AIME, and this is my first annual meeting. As a lifelong member of the non-ferrous metals industry I have enjoyed listening today to speakers point with pride and view with alarm the public relations activity or lack thereof in the halls of government, as well as at the grass roots. There is much to be alarmed about, to be sure, but also some accomplish¬ments to be viewed with pride. Other speakers have given a broad overview of our industry's relations with their several publics. I will be specific about two incidents in which The Anaconda Company faced the loss of confidence of a large portion of its publics: the nationalization of our properties in Chile in 1971 and the closing of our under¬ground mines in Butte, which was announced last October. If I have a minute left over, I will speak about our concern for the loss of confidence in business institutions which has been re¬vealed in recent public opinion polls.

Kimberlite contains a unique assemblage of minerals and exhibits a characteristic pattern of spectral reflectance in the visible and near-infrared wavelength region. This spectral pattern is readily discerned in well-exposed kimberlite outcrops, but becomes increasingly difficult to identify when outcrops are partially covered by vegetation or soils derived from non-kiaberlitic materials. Detection of poorly exposed kimberlite diatremes is possible using multispectral imaging techniques in which spectral bands are chosen to optimize contrast between he kimberlitic soils, non-kimberlitic soils and vegetation. Careful processing of the multi-spectral data is also essential in order to separate the spectral signature of kimberlite from the signatures of other components of the scene.

I consider it a distinct privilege to be afforded the opportunity of discussing the program of the Office of Coal Research. The principal activities I will be discussing are concerned with projects that fall in the utilization area. I will, to be sure, touch on other activities of the Office of Coal Research but am not equipped to discuss these activities in great detail. Research activities of the Office of Coal Research are conducted on a contract basis with commercial, academic, and non-profit institutions. We do not operate any laboratories of our own but we do maintain a very small staff for technical and administrative supervision of our contractors. We have consistently attempted to interest outstanding, creative, and practical research organizations in our program. We are constantly seeking the imaginative new idea that will materially reduce the cost of mining coal, transporting it, or will process it into a more convenient and useable form. In assessing proposals and in developing our program, we search for the improvements that will develop large-scale new uses for coal or coal products or those that support these new uses.

The planning of an underground mine for successful extraction of a bedded deposit in sedimentary rocks requires the integrated evaluation of many interdependent problems. The development and coordination of feasible solutions are the responsibility of the mining engineer. One of these problems will be discussed herein; this is the design and .layout of mine workings to secure effective control of the strata above and below the deposit. The objective is the simplest possible repetitive system permitting safe maximum recovery at optimum cost. Mining conditions to be encountered must be predictable. The best mining equipment is ineffective unless strata are controlled. Conversely, a mining layout is only of academic interest, if equipment can not be adapted to work it with adequate provision for ventilation, compliance with mining laws, proper ingress and egress and other practical requirements. Strata control, then, is but one of the mining engineer's problems, and the solutions must be worked out concurrently with solutions to other problems. Dr. Karl F. Fetters in his introductory remarks before the Fourth International Conference on Strata Control and Rock Mechanics at Columbia University said that mining engineering ?has come from the stage of empiricism backed by intuitive reasoning, to where it is based on fundamental scientific and engineering principles?. The standard curriculum in mining engineering now reflects such a change. In common with other branches of engineering education, less and less emphasis is placed on practical skills and more and more on broad scientific education. Science, research and the quest for basic truth are stressed, while descriptive courses and the teaching of specific skills are limited.

"The analysis of the mining laws of the different European States reveals big diversities and, often, remarkable complications. This is due, firstly, to the history and culture of different States and, secondly, to the assets of natural resources. It is therefore difficult to find a common line between the text of the various mining laws, but it can be observed that nearly all the States distinguish the mining resources in two categories: the materials whose importance is considered strategic belong to the first category; in the second category the materials whose importance (above all economic) is mainly local are comprised. The paper, analysing in detail the planning procedures in some important Countries, investigates the possible perspectives of arranging some guide-lines for a correct approach to the sustainable exploitation planning/programming of mineral resources (with particular reference to "quarry" materials, such as aggregates), considering both the environment protection and the production needs."

For small precious metals mining to show a comeback a different perspective must be taken than that of larger mining companies. This perspective must be much the same as that of past successful smaller mining enterprises such as when the US had a need for Uranium. Abandoned mines and environmental concerns in older mining districts have discouraged many from entering with the attitudes of why try there if so many unsuccessful mines exist. A small mining venture can be successful there but must have a "think smart'' attitude. There must be a thorough understanding of deposits, utilization of advanced technology and a properly managed mining operation. "THINK SMART" MINING The small mine operator is usually looking for small high grade deposits, consequently, long term success depends on a series of small successful mining operations. The small miner must succeed right-off or credibility and future project funding will suffer. No veteran of even a few years in the mining industry needs to be told that a dollar spent on production today fails to yield as much as it once did. More efficient equipment and techniques have helped soften the problem, but there is little likelihood that a mining company can do much to control inflation, wages, regulations, or grade. That leaves the small miner to "think smart" as one area where operating dollars can still be stretched to produce more than they presently do (Gardner. 1981). In the planning stage of a mining venture, when most options are still open, the main controllable elements are market timing, deposit selection, cutoff grade, mining method, mine design, mining sequence, rate of production build up, process design, project financing structure, project management, and project ownership structure. During planning, optimum criteria can be established for each of these. Once a mine is in production, these options are foreclosed or at least severely constrained. The more thought given to a mining program using all information available the less the risk of encountering disabling surprises. Thus the intent of this paper is to suggest the "think smart" attitude most small mine operations use for long term success. If one looks at a number of successful mining ventures, whether large or small, there is a general logic most have followed to be successful. They have used proven exploration, mining and processing techniques along with economic evaluation and experienced personnel to improve their odds. LOGIC IN DEVELOPING A FEASIBLE VENTURE Most successful small mine ventures achieve positive cash flow as quickly as possible by seeking out those deposits which require the least time and expense on activities leading up to production. To do this they look for deposits that are the most accessible, easily investigated, mined and processed with the cheapest fundamental methods. The general sequence of events starting with district selection are deposit selection, preliminary feasibility, exploration, detailed economic feasibility, mine planning, development and production. Each successive step becomes more costly requiring intermediate decisions along the way. District Selection Small operations should look for known deposits which favor the occurrence of the type deposit sought rather than efforts in unproductive areas. Known deposits in developed areas have some advantages over remote areas: 1. More alternative methods of transportation are available. 2. A larger stable work force is available. 3. The area is usually more pro-mining. 4. Power, water, housing, technical services, skilled services, schools, recreation and shopping are available.

The production of premium coal-based fuels (<3% ash) and ultra clean coals (<1% ash) using the process of selective agglomeration requires proper selection of raw coal, rough preparation procedures, milling equipment, product coal size distribution, water purity, agglomerants, agglomeration equipment and operational procedures. Each of the variables can contribute a small fraction to the impurity load in the product coal or limit the ability of the process to separate mineral matter-free coal. Each of the variables and their importance will be examined from data produced at the bench by batch and continuous agglomeratons as well as the results from pilot plant and tonnage production units. The results are discussed which have indicated that some standard commercial coals can be produced with ash contents as low as 0.2 % ash (batch/bench) and several tonnage lots of 0.6% ash in as 200 lb/hr pilot plant. In most cases iron pyrite released from the coal matrix and with proper pH control is rejected from the product coal agglomerates.

If you have ever driven on the Autobahns of Western Germany, you are well acquainted with the "fast lane." There is no speed limit; there are only two lanes in the direction you are going, and if you choose to drive in the fast lane, you had better be prepared to drive faster than anyone or someone will tailgate you with a constant screeching horn until you move to the "slow lane." The prize for this mastery of the fast lane is some kind of a "macho" feeling and getting to your destination sooner than your competitor. This has some comparisons with today Is liquid-sol id separation. We&apos;ve certainly had our moments in the fast lane but we&apos;ve also had other countries forcing us into the slow lane at times. It can be very embarassing when someone almost runs over your back and then shakes a fist at you as you shakily scatter to the much slower and overcrowded lane. Because of necessity, there will be many new improvements and added requirements in the next decades into the 21st century and beyond. Those countries and industries that can maintain the pace in the fast lane will be successful while the others may well be relegated to the non-competitive lane. Before considering what will be the challenges in the future for competitive liquid-sol id separation performance, it would be wise to review progress over the past forty years in this area. The author has to admit his ancient age and believes he can act as an evaluator of these many advances. Mica is a generic term that applies to a group of complex aluminosilicate minerals that have a sheet or plate-like structure and with different chemical compositions and physical properties. All micas form flat six-sided monoclinic crystals with remarkable cleavage parallel to the direction of the large surfaces, which permits them to be split into optically flat films; as thin as 1µm in thickness in some cases (Rajgarhia, 1987). Some micas are more easily split than others. For example, muscovite mica found in pegmatites is more easily split into thin films than is phlogopite. Mica found in mica schist is not as easily delaminated as mica found in weathered pegmatites. According to Dawson (1 949), the commercially important mica minerals are: Muscovite-potassium mica (colorless to pale green and ruby) Biotite-magnesium-iron mica (dark brown to black) Phlogopite-magnesium mica (pale yellow to dark brown) Vermiculite-hydrated biotite or magnesium-iron-mica (bronze yellow flakes) Lepidolite-potassium-lithium mica (pale lilac to deep purple) Some micas of less importance are: Zinnwaldite-lithium-iron mica (gray to smoky brown) Roscoelite-vanadium-potassium-magnesium mica (various shades of green and brown) Mica, principally muscovite, is widely used for industrial applications because of its exceptional physical, chemical, electrical, thermal, and mechanical properties (Table 1). Phlogopite and vermiculite follow muscovite in importance. Biotite finds very little commercial application at the present time. Commercially, mica is used in a number of forms. These forms and their description follow: Sheet mica refers to books of mica either mined from hard rock (pegmatites) or from loosely consolidated clayey material formed from the weathering of pegmatites and alaskites. These books can be readily split into thin film or splittings with specific thicknesses ranging from 0.0031 to 0.10 mm (Davis, 1985). Quality sheet mica is graded into 10 quality classifications (Tables 2 and 3). Books of mica that are flawed with excess inclusions, cracks, or folds (A mica) are called scrap mica and are either ground into commercial products by a dry or wet process. Built-up mica was developed in 1894 as a result of the cost and scarcity of sheet mica, and because many satisfactory electrical parts could be made from it (Preston, 1971). This type mica is formed by layering pieces of mica splittings upon one another and binding them together with inorganic or organic binders. These sheets are then pressed together under high temperature. Mica for this process is produced from pieces of sheet mica too small to be punched into electrical parts (Davis, 1985). Reconstituted mica is mica paper produced by forming a mat of very thin delaminated flakes of scrap mica. This mat is usually impregnated with an organic binder, but is also available unimpregnated. It is dried at 110°C. The mica for this process is either produced from the trimmings of a sheet mica operation or from blocks of A type mica (Davis, 1985, Chapman, 1983). Ground mica constitutes by far the largest use of mica, both quantitatively and application wise. It is produced by grinding and sizing scrap mica (also mica concentrate) obtained from five sources, 1) trimming from sheet mica, 2) A type mica blocks, 3) as a byproduct of spodumene and feldspar mining, 4) weathered pegmatites and alaskites, and 5) metamorphic schists. Synthetic mica is produced by crystal growth in a slowly cooled melt of accurately proportioned chemical oxides. Extended cooling times at a specific viscosity result in larger crystals. Many different micas have been formed by this process; however, fluorophlogopite is the most common.

In underground coal mining, one of the biggest challenges is spontaneous combustion, which will not only present safety hazards but result in reserve losses as a result of burnt coal. The released heat coupled with other combustible gases commonly encountered underground will significantly increase the risk of explosion. In this paper, three-phase foam as an environment-friendly fire fighting agent composed of nitrogen, water and fly ash is introduced. The nitrogen facilitates inertization of the fire zone; the water helps cool down the fire and the fly ash can closely cover the coal to isolate the oxygen. What&apos;s more, the fly ash and the foaming agent are good free radical absorption. The comprehensive merits mentioned above make three-phase foam quite effective in quenching spontaneous combustion. Experiments indicate that three-phase foam can significantly slow down the temperature rise of coal during oxidation. The comparison between slurry and three-phase foam shows that the latter one is capable of flowing upward in the porous media so as to extinguish the high-point fire and concealed fire.

The conventional beneficiation scheme for Florida phosphates involves reverse flotation with an intermediatory acid scrubbing step. A single reagent flotation process, using fatty acids or amine as the collector, would eliminate the scrubbing step along with the other flotation step. This can not only simplify the process flowsheet, but also result in reduced reagent costs. The potential of single reagent flotation of Florida phosphates using fatty acids as the collector was examined in this study.
