The principal geological and mineralogical characteristics of Chilean porphyry copper deposits are described. Elevated contents of fine grained ore and gangue material may cause copper losses and pose problems or render useless the flotation process. Examples of chalcopyrite and bornite size distributions are given. The state of the art of mineralogical and mineral chemical characterization in Chile is evaluated permitting analyses to lm and nm level by lacking the regular use of direct surface analysis.

The most valuable gem- quality red beryl comes from the Wah Wah Mountains of south-western Utah (Fig. 1). Red beryl occurs as a secondary mineral in topaz rhyolite. Marketable crystals from the Wah Wah Mountains have been produced from the Violet Mine, operated on a limited scale since 1976 under the ownership of the Harris family of Delta, UT. From 1989 to 1995, production from the mine amounted to more than $3 million with an inventory of several million dollars of unsold gems (Harris, 1995). In 1994, Kennecott Exploration leased the mine and surrounding claims to determine reserves and feasibility of gem recovery. Mining and exploration activity are continuing. Previous work on red beryl has dealt mainly with crystallographic, chemical and optical properties of the crystals (Shigley and Foord, 1984) with only general descriptions of the geology (Ream, 1979). However, the conditions needed for formation of red beryl have not been well constrained. It is generally proposed that beryl originates by precipitation in fractures and vugs from high-temperature gases as they are released from slowly cooled rhyolite lava. Dozens of topaz rhyolite flows and domes, similar in composition to the beryl-bearing flow in the Wah Wah Mountains, occur across the western United States (Christiansen et al., 1986). All of these flows devitrified to form vapor-phase topaz and locally other vapor-phase minerals such as bixbyite, garnet, hematite, pseudo-broo- kite and fluorite. But the occurrence of beryl is rare. Even within the rhyolite flow that hosts the red beryl, the productive open pits comprise only a small fraction of the surface area of the flow. Apparently, the conditions that favor the formation of red beryl are rarely achieved. Geologic setting The rhyolite flow that hosts the red beryl deposit lies along the eastern flank of the Wah Wah Mountains (Fig. 1). Prevolcanic rocks consist of Proterozoic, Paleozoic and Mesozoic sedimentary rocks that were folded and thrust to the east during the Sevier orogeny. Cenozoic volcanism began about 34 Ma. It consisted mostly of large volume dacitic ash flows and lesser volumes of low- silica rhyolite and andesitic lava flows. Beginning about 23 Ma, the style and composition of volcanism changed to smaller-volume, ash-flow and dome-forming eruptions of high-silica rhyolite and trachyandesitic lava. These rocks form the Blawn Formation of which the beryl-bearing rhyolite is one member (Best et al., 1987). Abbott et al. (1983) reported a K-Ar age of 22.1 + 0.8 Ma for this flow. It is probably the oldest topaz rhyolite flow in the Wah Wah Mountains. A subsequent episode (12 to 13 Ma) of bimodal magmatism produced the Steamboat Mountain Formation. The rhyolitic part of that is locally topaz-bearing. Displacement on the late Cenozoic extensional faults that formed the north-trending mountain ranges began about 22 Ma. Geology of the Violet Mine The rhyolite that hosts the red beryl deposit is part of a flowldome complex that overlies nonwelded tuff of cogenetic origin. This rhyolite is exposed over an area of about 9 km2 (3.5 sq miles) (Fig. 1). An unknown additional portion of the rhyolite is concealed beneath younger mafic lavas and sediments.

The Grasberg copper-gold deposit was discovered in the spring of 1988, one year before the planned closure of Freeport Indonesia's original Ertsberg openpit copper mine. In spite of Grasberg's remote location, 600 m (1968 ft) above the Ertsberg, atop a hitherto inaccessible mountain, Freeport-McMoRan brought its latest open-pit mine into production in the last week of 1989, less than two years after discovery. Freeport Indonesia's (FI) copper-gold mining operations are located in Irian Jaya, the easternmost province of Indonesia on the western side of the island of New Guinea. Fl's six ore deposits are all located within a 10- x 10-km' (3.9- x 3.9-sq mile) Contract of Work area. They are all between the elevations of 2900 and 4300 m (9515 and 14,100 ft) above sea level, some 96 km (60 miles) from the island's southern coast. A 118-km (74-mile) access route connects FT's port site of Amamapare on the Arafura Sea to the project area. The first section is an 18-km (11-mile) barge waterway. The final 100-km (63mile) is a two-lane gravel highway. The highway terminates 9 km (5.5 miles) beyond the FI townsite at the project's central mill, some 2850 m (9250 ft) above sea level. The mining areas are separated from the mill by a 780-m (2560-ft) sheer cliff face. The world's longest free span tramway system, with a total length of more than 1.6 km (1 mile), is the only means of access for men and materials between the mill and the surface mines. Weight restrictions for the tramway for equipment considered for the project are 15.4 t (17 st). The minimum clear width dimension of two tunnels along the portsite access road is 5.6 m (18.4 ft).

Gold has always fascinated mankind. From Tutankhamen's mask to the huge nuggets that have been found in the Australian outback, gold has quickened the pulse and fevered the eye. But in recent years, governments around the western world have shown a singular lack of interest in research into gold processing, with many programs being cut. There are some notable exceptions, fortunately, and this paper summarizes a large research effort that is well supported by the Australian government and the Australian gold industry. The AJ Parker Cooperative Research Centre for Hydrometallurgy is an unincorporated joint venture between the CSIRO Division of Minerals, Murdoch University, Curtin University of Technology and the Western Australian Department of Minerals and Energy. The Australian Mineral Industry Research Association (AMIRA) is the Parker Centre's broker for generic R&D contracts with industry. Each of the partners makes available staff, students and equipment to further the work of the Parker Centre, and the Australian Government provides additional funding. The Parker Centre is nearly five years old and has grown spectacularly in that time. There are now about 30 full-time-equivalents of effort from 50 scientists and engineers, as well as about 40 postgraduate and honours students. The fundamentals of the key operations in hydrometallurgy are studied in three programs: leaching (which includes pretreatment by roasting etc), precipitation (or crystallisation), and surface processes (which includes solid/liquid separation, adsorption, solvent extraction, etc). A large part of the Parker Centre's R&D is directed towards gold processing technology. In Australia, a dramatic increase in gold production, from about 30 to nearly 300 tonnes per year (1977-1997), has been made possible largely as a result of a brilliant metallurgical innovation, the carbon-in-pulp process. However, falling head grades eg 2.56 to 1.84 g(Au)/t over the last 10 years, and environmental concerns, are squeezing profit margins. There is increasing pressure to reduce costs, and the Parker Centre program is focussed on providing the scientific understanding required to do this. A selection of research highlights will be given, to indicate the depth and breadth of the R&D at the Parker Centre.

The sandstone type Devladivske uranium deposit is located within the limits of Eocene pale-ovalley filled with alluvial sediments. Mineralization with uranium content up to 0.1% forms several ore beds divided by redox barriers. In the period 1962-1983 the deposit has been exploited over an area of 918000m2 by in situ leaching (ISL) using drillholes with a depth between 35 and 100m. During mining operation about 200,000 t of H2SO4, 6,300 t of HNO3, and 15,000 t of NH4NO3, have been pumped in the ore body. In 1983, the groundwater pollution aureole had a length of 4.5 km and a width of 400-600 m. There is a hydraulic connection between the uranium-bearing aquifer and both the upper and lower ones. The technological solutions used for ISL caused partial contamination of these horizons. After mining completion, dilution of the residual technological solutions with "pure" natural waters took place through gaps in impermeable sediments between aquifer horizons. Calculation of self-purification process kinetics shows that the sulfate ion pollution aureole will disappear approximately after 120-150 years at a distance up to 2.0-2.5 km from the western margin of the deposit. This means that there is no risk for contamination of the river Saksagan? that flows at a distance of 17km from the deposit.

The major cost in comminution is energy consumption, which can be as high as 50% of the operating cost. Improvements in plant operations have resulted in up to a 15% reduction in energy usage (kw-hr/t). These improvements have been made through the optimization of grinding efficiency and the use of expert model-based control systems. Optimization involves the determination of the levels of the critical-operating conditions that result in the most efficient breakage of ore in the mill. These optimal levels are identified through plant/laboratory test work and through computer simulation using advanced process models. Model-based expert control achieves the maximum performance from the grinding circuit by identifying the characteristics of the ore in the mill with an optimal on-line estimator. Using this information, the control system dynamically determines the operating point that will yield the optimal performance. Two industrial applications of grinding-circuit optimization and model-based control are presented to demonstrate the power of this new technology.

The Bannockburn gold prospect is a new discovery in Ontario's oldest gold camp at Eldorado, eastern Ontario. Mono Gold Mines Inc. of Vancouver, British Columbia, acquired the property in 1980 and in 1984 discovered a previously unreported gold bearing quartz vein system to the northeast of the old Bannockburn Mine. Extensive diamond drilling carried out since 1985 defined a quartz vein system over 475 m (1 ,500 ft) of strike to a depth of over 105 m (350 ft). Limited underground exploration by decline to the 22.9 m (75 ft) level in 1988 confirmed the continuity and tenor of the quartz veins. Gold occurs as native metal with minor sulphides and bismuth tellurides in a quartz carbonate vein system within metasedimentary and metavolcanic rocks of the Grenville Province. Metallurgical test work on a surface bulk sample was favourable. Estimates of drill indicated reserves have been made as well as reserves based on the limited underground exploration.

Transporting goods from producers to consumers is a fundamental part of the US economy. The demand for transportation closely reflects the economic health and well-being of the nation's industrial, commercial, and agricultural sectors. The inland waterway barge industry has traditionally played a key role in transporting needed commodities to industries on an economical basis. Barges account for 10% of the domestic intercity tonnage carried by all transportation modes. Water carriers operating on inland waterways hauled more than 450 Mt (500 million st) of cargo in 1980-up from 428 Mt (472 million st) in 1970. Inland Waterway Shipments Metallic and nonmetallic minerals comprise one of the largest commodity groups moved on inland waterways. As illustrated in Table 1, metallic and nonmetallic mineral shipments accounted for more than 69 Mt (77 million st), or nearly 15% of all commodities shipped in 1980. Putting this tonnage in perspective, coal and petroleum represent the two largest commodities moved on inland waterways. In 1980, petroleum and petroleum products accounted for 138 Mt (152 million st), or 28% of all commodities shipped. Similarly, coal represented 120 Mt (132 million st), or 25% or all commodities shipped. Even though shipments of metallic and nonmetallic minerals are smaller than coal and petroleum, they still account for a sizeable portion transported. The inland barge industry moves a variety of metallic and nonmetallic minerals ranging from manganese ores to building cement. Minerals transported by barge include: • iron, copper, bauxite, and manganese ores for metal production; • lime and limestone for construction and electric utility scrubbers; • phosphate rock, natural fertilizers, and gypsum for agricultural needs; • sand, gravel and crushed rock, clay, asphalt, tar, and pitches, and building cement for construction purposes; and • a host of other minerals to meet industrial needs. A few mineral commodities are responsible for a large proportion of waterborne mineral shipments.

The trend in underground room-and-pillar coal mining is to employ remote-controlled, continuous-mining machines and extended cuts to depths of 12 m (40 ft) or more. This system of coal extraction, adopted by more than 435 mines, can create additional worker safety hazards. To address the ground-control-related safety hazards, a combination of statistical analysis and numerical modeling was used. Initially, the reported roof-fall incidents and fatalities were reviewed to delineate the ground-control hazards. Then, the application of the coal mine roof rating (CMRR) for estimating safe extended-cut depths was evaluated. Finally, computer modeling was completed to predict roof displacements during extended-cut mining. This paper describes the results of these studies and their impacts on the safety of extended-cut mining.

"A coal bump is characterized by the sudden failure of one or more pillars and an associated release of kinetic energy. Although the geologic conditions surrounding coal bumps are often similar, their occurrence and magnitude are difficult to predict. This paper presents the development of an approach to assess the potential for coal bumps in room and pillar mines through the use of energy concepts and special consideration of the interface properties between the coal and overlying rock. Back analyses were performed on the widespread collapse of a room and pillar mine with an associated 3.9 local magnitude seismic event. Pillar and mine-scale models were constructed using the distinct element method to simulate the mining stages leading up to the collapse. A variety of loading conditions, material properties, and interface properties were evaluated for their effect on unstable failure of single pillars, and the mine-scale model was used to study the evolution of failure during progressive mining. The extent of unstable failure was quantified in these models by calculating the total kinetic energy released during each mining stage. Through the parametric analysis of single pillar models, it was found that softening parameters in either the coal or the coal/rock interface can individually facilitate unstable failure of pillars, but the combination of the two in a single model produced a much higher release of energy during failure. The results of the mine-scale model further illustrated the trend as the combination of softening parameters in the coal and coal/rock interface produced a series of failures which most accurately reflected the collapse event at the mine. The method of room and pillar stability analysis demonstrated in this study effectively explores the potential for large coal bumps. INTRODUCTION The analysis of coal pillar behavior is challenging because natural variability in geologic conditions requires estimation of material strengths and predicted loads for a given mining situation. Large width-to-height (w/h) ratio pillars and deep overburden present an additional challenge, as the failure behavior of such pillars is more complex and may involve unstable, sudden collapse. Empirical methods have improved the success of coal pillar design for a wide range of conditions, but for deep cover and squat pillar geometries, less accuracy has been achieved in predicting pillar performance (Mark 2000). As with any empirical approach, more back analysis and the consideration of new variables may help improve understanding and accuracy of future designs. This paper presents a study of pillar stability through the back analysis of the Crandall Canyon Mine collapse, which occurred in August of 2007. Pillar-scale models are utilized for the calibration of material properties and assessment of potential instability under varying conditions, and mine-scale models are constructed in an attempt to reproduce widespread failure and correlate with observations at the mine. Special consideration is given to the properties of the coal and the coal/rock interface, and kinetic energy is calculated throughout the course of the simulations to gauge the level of instability when pillar failure occurs. Models were constructed using the Universal Distinct Element Code (UDEC) (Itasca, 2014)."

Introduction The art of ripping has been around since the Romans built the Appian Way, but only in the last decade has ripping emerged as a close competitor with drilling and blasting in breaking up heavy rock formations. That is not to say ripping is as effective in every case, or even applicable in all cases, but it does provide a cost efficient option in many situations-if the optimum ripping techniques are used. Originally designed only to loosen hard pan, the ripper has evolved into a powerful tool, its capability increasing as the weight and horsepower of tractors increased. The tractor-mounted ripper extended the range of ripping because of the additional weight it brought to bear on the ripper tooth. Tandem ripping added the weight and power of a second tractor, extending the rippability range even further. Of course, the use of ripping depends on the type of material to be ripped. Not all rock can be ripped. Determination of rippability-an art in itself-is often inconclusive but there are certain universal principles that can be considered in the first step toward optimizing ripping techniques. Each of the three basic rock types, igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic, exhibits characteristics that bear on rippability. Igneous rocks are the most difficult to rip because they lack the stratification and cleavage planes essential to ripping hard rock. Sedimentary rocks are generally the most easily ripped since they are built of layers differing in material, texture, color, and thickness. Metamorphic rocks vary in rippability with degree of lamination or cleavage caused by transformation from pre-existing rock. The condition of rock also affects its rippability. Although sedimentary rocks offer the best opportunity to rip and igneous and metamorphic the least, decomposed granite and other weathered igneous and metamorphic rock often can be ripped economically. Little or no trouble is encountered with hardpan, clays, shales, or cemented gravel. Likewise, highly stratified or laminated rocks offer good possibilities for ripping. However, thicklybedded rock formations generally must be drilled and blasted. The physical characteristics that favor ripping may be summarized as follows: • Fractures, faults, and planes of weakness of any kind; • Weathering, resulting from temperature and moisture changes; • Brittleness and crystalline nature; • High degree of stratification or lamination; • Large grain size; • Moisture permeated clay, shale, and rock formations; and • Low compressive strength. Ripper Types A second fundamental to optimal ripping is choosing the right equipment for a particular job. There are three types of rippers-the hinge, the parallelogram, and the adjustable parallelogram. In the hinge ripper the linkage carrying the beam and shank pivots on a fixed point at the rear of the tractor. The resulting arc from up and down movement causes up to 30° differential in the tip-ground angle. Thus, the tooth angle changes as it enters and proceeds to ripping depth. The parallelogram ripper's linkage maintains the same tip-ground angle regardless of tooth depth. This type of ripper has advantages over the hinge-type when ripping above maximum depth, but does not provide the aggressive tooth angle necessary for hard-to-penetrate materials. The adjustable parallelogram combines the benefits of both the hinge and the parallelogram rippers. It has the additional benefit of being able to vary the tip angle to the optimum angle of penetration. It can also be adjusted while moving, for the optimum ripping angle in any material. Several other factors that are important in selecting the right ripping equipment are down pressure available at the tip of the ripper, tractor flywheel horsepower, and the tractor's gross weight. Down pressure at the tip determines whether ripper penetration can be obtained and maintained. Flywheel horsepower rating determines whether the tractor has the power to advance the tip. The tractor's gross weight determines whether the tractor will have sufficient- to use the horsepower. The best ripping procedure depends on the job's actual conditions. While conditions, vary, it is still possible to apply certain proven techniques to a typical ripping situation. Caterpillar Tractor Co.'s Handbook on Ripping says optimum ripping efficiency can be realized if-before actual ripping begins-these questions and answers are considered.

This paper is based on two recently (2002) published reports: - "Breaking New Ground". Final report on the Mining, Minerals, and Sustainable Development Project (MMSD). - "2002 Sustainability Reporting Guidelines". Published by the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI). The GRI guidelines can be applied in all kinds of industries and other organizations, whereas the MMSD project report is sector specific. However, both reports center on the three pillars of sustainability. The performance indicators as they are presented in the GRI guidelines have been assessed and compared with the sector specific arguments in the MMSD report. Based on this evaluation, the paper points at some indicators that may be useful in the start-up phase of sustainability reporting, seen from the perspective of the aggregate industry in an industrialized North European country with increasing environmental awareness and pressure on natural resources.

OUTLINE Beginning in 1946, a careful geological survey was made of the Tsugaru Straits. In 1964, excavation of the exploratory tunnels were started to observe the characteristics of faults and rock formation directly, and to study construction methods of excavation and sealing water inflow. In March 1971, the investigation stages were over, and in April 1971, the construction project was authorized from the government. The geological features in the straits may be divided into three broad classes. One third consists of andesite on Honshu side. The other two thirds consists of tuff. The middle of the straits consists of tuff, so-called Kuromatsunai-layers. On Hokkaido side, it consists of tuff, called as Kunnui-layers. There are nine noteworthy faults on the route. Prior to the excavation of the main tunnel, the horizontal pilot tunnels and service tunnels are made. Exploratory borings are taken to confirm the geological conditions and the presence of gushing water. Groutings for sealing water inflow are carried out when necessary. In geologically bad conditioned sections such as disintegrated or fractured zones, special methods are applied. In geologically good zones, the tunnels are bored through using the same methods as for a mountain tunnel driving. The pilot tunnel being constructed at the sea bottom is under direct control of the Japan Railway Construction Public Corporation. The service tunnel and the main tunnel are being excavated by contractors.

A field inventory was made of the mineral, geologic, geothermal, and groundwater resources of three geologically recent lava fields in the desert of Oregon. The term "resource" was applied with care: a "resource" must have particular value or worth, although it need not be economically viable. The spectacular volcanic features of the area have particular scientific and general interest and thus constitute geologic resources. The mineral endowment, mostly occurrences of low unit value such as stone and cinders, in large part are not resources, due to market conditions, regulations, and other factors. These and other conclusions will be used by the Bureau of Land Management in its multiple land use planning process for the area.

As it becomes more and more apparent that our nation must place a great deal of reliance on coal as an energy source in the coming decades, prospecting for new reserves Un Missouri and other states in the Western Interior Region is increasing. As more and more of the known reserve becomes committed to existing or planned projects operators will be forced to look beyond the fringes of existing coal fields for additional reserves. Perplexing geologic problems invariably confront all prospectors and are particularly bothersome to those new to a particular area. It is the purpose of this paper to alert prospective operators to geologic problems likely to be encountered and to offer guidance in the recognition and solution of these problems. Particular emphasis is placed upon geologic structure and washouts. Other geologic problems have been discussed in a previous paper.

In this study, the formation of zeolites around Kizkapan and Karlikoy villages (Sothwest Kesan) were investigated. In this region, stratigrafically, Upper Eocene Kesan Formation, i.e. sandstone and rarely shale are observed at the bottom. Early Middle-Oligocene Yenimuhacir Formation is composed of sandstone, marl and tuffs. The zeolitisation is determined in the dasitic tuffs of the Yenimuhacir Formation. In this tuffs' zone, alteration had primarily resulted in zeolites, mainly mordenite, heulandite-clinoptiIolite. Silicification and alteration to clay minerals are also common. The Miocene-Pliocene Ergene Formation and alluvium deposits are the top units in the area. In the studied area, zeolite occurences have economic importance. The results show that successively rapid and short term periods are responsible for the clinoptilolite-heuylandite formations. The homogene chemistry of the solutions may be evaluated for a possible successive zeolitisation period. Multi-periodic vocanic activity and also circulation of thermal water had resulted in a continous dissolution of volcanic glass; moreover, resulted in the formation of suitable conditions of zeolite formation. The mineral crystallization sequences and alteration products as zeolites within the wall-rock, circulated solution reaction depends on a serie of parameters such as chemical composition of both initial materials and volcanic solutions during rock¬solution interaction period. The previous researches and the chemical studies support our results and observations in the studied area. The aim of this study is to investigate the presence of zeolitisation and to explain the formation steps of zeolitisation in Kesan Area by considering the content and distribution of major and minor elements determined in zeolite bearing tuffs. The chemical structures of both zeolite bearing volcanics and zeolite minerals are compared to the results of previous studies. Two dimentional behaviours of major and minor elements were discussed in order to caracterize zeolitisation development and to postulate a probable formation type of zeolitic alteration.

"The ways of the world be many and most of the ways be tried, you follow in the footsteps of others till you come to the great divide". These words, written by Robert Service a long time ago, come to mind when I think of our original attitude upon entering into a contract with the International Nickel Company to sink the deepest shaft in the world outside of the Union of South Africa. This shaft was to be sunk to a depth of 7,137 feet from surface, and while it was recognized by all concerned to be a somewhat unusual undertaking in our part of the world, the fact that quite a few shafts had already been sunk to this depth in South Africa probably gave us the feeling that we were following in the footsteps of others. In retrospect, because this shaft was being sunk under entirely different conditions than those existing in South Africa, we were in fact venturing into an entirely new area of endeavour without properly recognizing this fact. It has occurred to me that others considering a similar type of job could benefit from our experience, especially in an assessment of the risks involved and how they compare to those encountered in an ordinary shaft. For comparison purposes, I would define an ordinary shaft as being sunk to a depth of 5,000 ft or less, and a deep shaft as one being sunk to a depth of between 5,000 ft and 8,000 ft. HISTORICAL REVIEW OF BOARD OPERATIONS The Ontario Worker's Compensation Board was established in law enacted by the legislature of the Province of Ontario in 1915. It was designed to pay insurance benefits to injured workers, and at the same time to protect employers from legal suit. It was based upon an enquiry system rather than an adversary system such as that used in the courts process. Initially, the system was designed to pay compensation benefits and subsequently, to pay for the cost of medical treatment and pensions for disability and disease resultant from the effects of traumatic injury. In 1947, the Act was changed to include industrial or occupational generated diseases, not specifically related to traumatology. Such occupational diseases were therefore accepted and benefits paid subsequent to that date. As will be discussed in several minutes, even today the vast preponderance of compensation claims with the Ontario Board continues to be related to the effects of trauma. HISTORICAL REVIEW OF EXPOSURE TO RADON GAS DECAY PRODUCTS In some areas of Ontario, especially in Northern Ontario, there is a natural leaching of radon gas from the underlying rock formation. This constitutes very low levels of radon gas decay product radiation exposure to those persons coming in contact and inhaling these substances. This paper however is designed to discuss the occupational generated types of radon gas exposures. For many years dating back to the 1930's, partially refined ores were being shipped from Northern Canada to a refinery located at Port Hope, Ontario, still in operation and currently operated by Eldorado Nuclear Limited of Canada. Initially, the purpose for the operation was extraction of radium to be sold on world markets for medical treatment purposes. With the advent of World War II, this market collapsed. Subsequent to World War II, the availability of other sources of radiation for medical radio-therapy generally replaced the requirements for radium. During World War II, a new market opened up for the Port Hope refinery however as work into nuclear chain reactions and the development of the atomic bomb identified the need for uranium and enriched uranium. During the period of operations where radium was being extracted at the Port Hope refinery, it is now known that an identifiable radon gas hazard did exist. This hazard disappeared when the production line for extraction of radium ceased operations. In 1954, uranium mining operations opened up in Ontario at two locations, Bancroft and Elliot Lake. At the peak of operations, 16 mines were operational and 11,000 workers were employed in these mining operations. A high level of mining activity continued over a 10 year interval with the Bancroft Mines closing permanently in 1964 following a 10 year life of operation. The other mines in Elliot Lake closed about the same time with the exception of two uranium mine operations which have continued to be operational up to the present time. By 1965, due to a dramatic drop in world demand for uranium, the total work force had fallen to 1/10 of the peak work force, and approximately 1,300 workers remained in employment. It is of interest to note that one significant difference in the work environment between Elliot Lake and Bancroft was the high silica content of the Elliot Lake ore. This gave rise to a number of cases of silicosis developing in relatively short intervals of time in the Elliot Lake miner population. No cases of silicosis were identified from the Bancroft operations. Based upon the experience in investigating and evaluating actual cases of lung cancer in the uranium miners over the years, the medical staff at the Ontario Board also developed the impression that radiation levels were much higher in the Bancroft operations, especially in the earlier years of operation, than at Elliot Lake. This resulted in accumulation of higher levels of Working Level Months (WLM), usually over a shorter exposure interval in many of the cases. This aspect will be further evaluated in this presentation. Subsequent to 1965, the work force remained quite static in numbers until 1975. At that time, there began to develop an increase in the work force, and this increase is continuing at a moderate rate up to the present. INITIAL METHOD OF HANDLING LUNG CANCER CLAIMS The first lung cancer claims in Ontario from uranium mining operations were accepted on the perceived cause-effect relationship. This relationship was based upon the data from the Colorado observations and the Czechoslovakia data. Initially, a series of regression equations on mortality were developed and used to estimate the effect of exposure to low cumulative doses of radon daughters as it might relate to the frequency of occurrence of lung cancer at any particular cumulative exposure level. A probability of cancer being radiation induced as against it being caused from other factors was calculated. This method was discontinued subsequent to 1972 due to problems encountered in carrying out this complex evaluation. Thereafter, each case was dealt with on an individual basis, being based upon whether or not the tumour was of the oat cell type, a cumulative exposure in excess of 120 WLM; latency periods in excess of 10 years, commencement of mining prior to

This ratio measures the efficiency of converting a ray material into final products. The material composition of product has shown steady and persistent declines over time for most metals and materials. This tendency demonstrates the continued improvements in manufacturing technology, resulting from substitutions of other materials and improvements in production efficiency. The purpose of this paper is to study trends in the material composition of product to reveal the impact of advanced materials on the use of traditional metals.

This paper covers several points of interest to mine engineers and planners involved in evaluating or conducting geostatistical coal reserve estimates. In particular, the ability to optimize borehole drilling locations and minimize drilling costs is addressed. Also discussed is the concept of confidence intervals for estimated coal characteristics obtained through geostatistical estimates and their importance in decision-making for mine planners. Finally, a discussion is presented on how geostatistics enables identification of invalid data points and actually forces strict attention to data editing and proper geologic interpretation.
