Hedges Gold Pty. Ltd. mines and processes a lateritic gold orebody approximately 120 km south east of Perth in the Darling plateau. The operation is approximately 26 km from the town of Boddington and 31 km from the town of Dwellingup. Hedges operates under The Western Australian Environmental Protection Act, Licence Number 3183. Presently, nine Limitations and Conditions are applicable to the tailings dam. These conditions apply to maximum discharge/disposal quantity permitted. Hedges mine is located in state Forest within the eastern, low rainfall section of the Darling Range and within the waler catchment area of the Murray River. Ore is carted by 120 tonne haulpacks to the plant. The plant and tailings dam is on private farm land some six kms from the mine.

The examination of relatively well behaved distributions subject to truncation by a cutoff grade in the mine clearly demonstrates that a bias is inevitably introduced when the selection is based on the results of samples which are subject to even the most idealised error distribution. The idealised error used in this paper is assumed to be normally distributed with a mean of zero and is thus unbiased. The bias introduced can be minimised but it cannot be eradicated. A better understanding of the bias can lead to improved procedures for mine sampling, sample preparation, assaying and estimation of selection units which will not only reduce the discrepancy but more significantly will increase the efficiency of mining selection and hence profitability.

John Ferguson of Phelps Dodge provides us with a case study of how his company approaches its computing and hardware decisions. Senior management is the target audience for this contribution which discusses computer employment strategy at Phelps Dodge and how it may differ from the practices followed by other companies. The computer professional is well advised to read this subsection also to gain insight into the way in which management looks at computers in support of company operations. The following pages take us through a progression of developments and expectations brought about by the computer: the tremendous versatility of this new tool and its swift development; the widespread changes and problems it introduced; the new and revolutionary management theories it prompted and the widely supported centralized service concept it introduced to information processing. It continues with a discussion of Phelps Dodge's early experience, its ,operating environment, and its strategy development-attention to operating units and later headquarters with stress on service needs of users. It concludes that for computing to be effective it must fit in with the bay in which the company operates and must be sensitive to the needs of the people it serves.

In 1989, for the third consecutive year, both the production and consumption of coal in the United States reached record levels. Domestic coal consumption totaled 806.5 Mt (889 million st) in 1989, a 5.4 Mt (6 million st) increase from the year before (Table 1). US coal exporters also had a banner year. For the first time since 1982, exports ex¬ceeded 91 Mt (100 million st). US coal production in 1989 rose by a surprising 27.3 Mt (30 million st), reaching 889 Mt (980 million st) for the year. To a certain extent, the sizable difference between production and demand growth was due to smaller consumer stock withdrawals. Coal consumers withdrew only 12.7 Mt (14 million st) of coal from their stocks in 1989, com¬pared to 22.7 Mt (25 million st) in 1988. Despite strengthening coal consumption, exports, and production, coal prices to all domestic sectors declined slightly during the year. That essentially continued the trend of the past several years. On the labor front, the United Mine Workers of America struck the Pittston Coal Group in 1989. It was a bitter work stoppage that was not settled until February of 1990. This was the first major coal strike since 1985. The strike also precipitated a series of wildcat outages by UMWA members in June and July. At their peak, more than 40,000 UMWA members participated in the wildcat strikes. Except at Pittston, however, most miners were back to work by August. It is estimated that perhaps 4.5 to 9.1 Mt (5 to 10 million st) of coal production was lost due to the Pittston and associated wildcat strikes. However, some of this production may have been recouped by other coal companies not affected by the wildcat strikes, and by the affected companies after the strikes ended.

In support of the Conceptual Design of a Nuclear Waste Repository in Salt, a confined core pillar design method developed by others was reviewed. The method, which was developed for applications in coal, represents the confined strength of the pillar material in terms of a linear failure criterion. However, triaxial compression strength tests conducted on salt samples indicate that a non-linear strength criterion is more appropriate for salt. The rationale behind the confined core method is reviewed. A rederivation of the confined core method is then presented that incorporates a non-linear strength criterion. Benefits of the modified method are that the strength of the confined pillar core can be more accurately represented, and that two contributors of pillar strength, rather than one, can be addressed.

Relationships among mining industry, society and environment have been historically complex due to its environmental impacts. In the Chilean mining industry, repetitive and small spills of fuel during maintenance of machinery have been adsorbed by desert soils and sawdust to control environmental pollution. The froth flotation is the main technology to recover specific mineralogical species from sulphide ores. Flotation reagents are expensive and representing an environmental risks due to its physics properties. Our objective was to investigate the feasibility of applying bioremediation as a cost-effective alternative technology to physical-chemical treatments and to evaluate the efficacy of biosolids as foaming agents. Our results show that the bioremediation is feasible by use of the autochthonous microbial communities and biosolids could be used as new environmental-friendly organic reagents. This research discloses a sustainable bioremediation process and industrial ecology model based on these two successful cases.

Rend Lake is an Army Corps of Engineers reservoir located in Franklin and Jefferson Counties in south-central Illinois. The lake consists of 20,000 acres of water and 19,000 acres of public access land. The site attracts over two million visitors a year and is surrounded by campgrounds and other recreational facilities. The lake overlies the largest tonnage of low sulfur coal in the state. Coal is being removed beneath the lake from five mines operated by three coal companies. Currently high extraction mining operations are approaching low-lying, environmentally sensitive, and high-use recreational areas. Advanced planning to maximize coal extraction and minimize potential effects of subsidence requires the development of procedures to assess the impact of high-extraction mining on the land use of the area. The Bureau of Mines, the Corps of Engineers, and the coal companies have initiated research to assess the following proposed planning steps to ensure the maximum recovery of the coal resources while minimizing impacts to surface land use: 1) Establish a dialogue between the surface and mineral owners; 2) develop a geographic information system to aid in assessing existing land use and potential changes; 3) assess the potential effects of subsidence on drainage, wildlife habitats, and changes in land use prior to mining; 4) coordinate the mining displacements with surface activities to minimize disruption; and 5) develop appropriate mitigation plans before mining occurs.

Certain health and safety hazards occur entirely unexpectedly in some subterranean excavations. Although ground support is not the subject of this paper, ground failure can result in large and often uncontrolled flow of fluids into an excavation. Even when there is no ground failure, the disturbance of nature's equilibrium between rock or unconsolidated alluvium or rubble and the contained fluids poses severe problems to a well planned operation. Optimum conditions for safe operation cannot be the sole criterion for site selection. Some mineral deposits form in zones of structural weakness, others form where hydrothermal alteration substantially weakens the enclosing rock, and tabular deposits such as coal and evaporites inevitably undermine large areas. Excavation to acquire mineral values cannot be relocated. The same is often true for tunnels driven to connect distant points by the most direct route. Rivers and mountains cannot he avoided, and the cost of lengthening a tunnel--by even a fraction of a percent--must be strongly justified. No responsible engineer will knowingly select a dangerous route for excavation, but to what extent do engineers attempt to assess the health and safety hazards that may be reasonably expected? How, specifically, can methane explosions, water and sand flooding, dangerous dusts, toxic gases, thermal shock and radar poisoning be eliminated or minimized through systematic advance planning?

On the basis of tonnage, the sand and gravel industry is the second largest nonfuel mineral industry in the United States. In 1990, the production of sand and gravel was 927 Mt valued at $3.4 billion. California, which leads the nation with more than 126 Mt, together with Texas, Washington, Michigan, and Ohio, account for 36% of the total production in the nation (Table 1). In commercial usage, sand applies to rock or mineral fragments ranging in size from particles retained on a No. 200 Sieve (0.074 mm openings) to those passing a No. 4 Sieve (4.76 mm openings). Gravel consists of rock or mineral fragments larger than 4.76 mm, ranging up to 88.9 mm maximum size. The construction industry consumes 97% of the sand and gravel produced; the remainder is sand used for specialized products such as glass (see chapter on Industrial Sand and Sandstone and Glass Raw Materials). Utilization The building industry uses sand and gravel chiefly as aggregate in portland cement concrete, mortar, and plaster; the paving industry uses sand and gravel in both asphaltic mixtures and portland cement concrete. Aggregate is commonly designated as the inert fragmental material that is bound into a conglomerate mass by a cementing material such as portland cement, asphalt, or gypsum plaster. Sand and gravel is also used as construction fill, road base and subbase, and decorative material. Portland Cement Concrete Aggregates: Portland cement concrete consists of sand and gravel surrounded and held together by hardened portland cement paste. Concrete mixes commonly contain 15 to 20% water, 7 to 14% cement, and66 to 78% aggregate. Sand and gravel used as concrete aggregate have to meet many requirements (Goldman and Reining, 1983). Premature deterioration of concrete has been traced in many instances to the use of unsuitable aggregates. Asphaltic Aggregate: Asphaltic mixtures used predominantly for paving consist of combinations of sand, gravel, and mineral filler (material finer than 0.076 mm), uniformly coated and mixed with asphalt produced in the refining of petroleum. Sand and gravel used as asphaltic aggregate must meet the same general physical requirements as materials used for portland cement aggregate. GEOLOGY General Requirements of Aggregates Construction aggregate has many requirements that are difficult to meet if only unprocessed material from natural deposits is used. Suitable material is composed of clean, uncoated, properly shaped particles that are sound and durable. Soundness and durability are terms used to denote the ability of aggregates to retain a uniform physical and chemical state over a long period of time so as not to disintegrate when exposed to weathering and other destructive processes. Individual particles must be tough and firm, possessing the strength to resist physical stresses and chemical and physical changes, that may cause swelling, cracking, softening, and leaching. The aggregate should not be contaminated by excessive clayey material, silt, mica, organic matter, chemical salts, and surface coatings. Physical Properties: The quality of aggregate depends upon its physical and chemical properties. These, in turn, may be inherent mineralogical and textural features of the rock or may be the effects of later changes such as tectonics, mechanical or chemical weathering, or incrustations. The physical properties most significant for concrete use are: 1) abundance and nature of fractures and pores, 2) particle shape and surface texture, and 3) volume changes which may occur because of freezing and thawing or wetting and drying. An aggregate is considered to be physically sound if it is adequately strong and capable of resisting the agencies of weathering without disruption or decomposition. Minerals or rock particles that are physically weak, extremely water absorptive, and easily cleavable are susceptible to breakdown. The use of such materials in concrete reduces strength or leads to early deterioration by promoting weak bond between cement and aggregate, or by inducing cracking, spalling, or popouts. Severely weathered, soft, micaceous, or porous materials may cause localized stresses to develop in concrete by swelling and shrinking during wetting and drying or freezing and thawing cycles. Physical Suitability of the Various Rock Types. Sedimentary rocks have a wide range in physical and chemical qualities. Sand- stones and limestones, if hard and dense, are ordinarily satisfactory, but many sandstones are friable and excessively porous and commonly are clay-bearing. Shales generally make poor aggregate material, being soft, weak, and absorptive. Most igneous rocks are satisfactory, being normally hard, tough, and dense. Tuffs and certain flow rocks may be extremely porous and have high water absorption and low strength. Metamorphic rocks differ in character. Most quartzites are massive, tough, and dense. Fine-grained marbles are usually durable, but coarse-grained marbles have low abrasion resistance. Gneisses are ordinarily very tough and durable. Some schists contain micaceous minerals that are undesirable because they are soft, laminated, and absorptive. Micaceous minerals are susceptible to splitting along cleavage planes and thereby impair particle strength and durability. Some schists and slates in particular are thinly laminated and tend to assume flat slabby shapes that lack strength-and do not pack well. Any or all of these rock types may be rendered undesirable because of harmful exterior coatings. Weathering processes, particularly the action of ground waters, deposit these coatings. The most common coatings are calcium carbonate, clay, silt, opal, chalcedony, iron oxide, manganese oxide, and gypsum. Particles with these coatings are undesirable as aggregates because the bond between particle and coating may be weak, and decreasing the strength of the aggregate-cement bond.

The world-class Kramer sodium borate deposit is being developed by modern open pit operations near Boron, California. The deposit is a bedded, lenticular sedimentary sequence of borax and kernite crystals together with claystone. The borates dip south into a structural basin-bounding fault and were formed in the bottom muds of a permanent shallow lake. The lake was fed boron and sodium-rich solutions from a thermal spring source of volcanic origin. In addition to deposit geology, present day geotechnical concerns such as groundwater and slope stability will be discussed.

Wide variation in the nature of the coal seams and the surrounding rock mass of the Indian coalfields and very little information about the associated stress fields were observed to be the major hurdles in the straight forward application of a continuous miner (CM) based mechanised depillaring approach. Due to various techno-economic reasons, a considerably large number of coal seams have been developed and are standing on pillars in India. The development of pillars is done as per Indian coal mines regulation, which results in pillars of relatively large size. In fact, the large size of the pillars provides stiff natural support to control caving of the massive overlying strata. However, the size of these pillars is not conducive for the single pass pillar stripping technique and, therefore, there is a need for pillar splitting before pillar extraction/retreating. Splitting of the pillar may reduce the competency/stiffness of the pillar, which creates a chance of overriding during final extraction below a massive roof stratum. This paper first discusses the existing coal mining scenario in India followed by a brief presentation of geo-technical details of pillar extraction at the three sites where a CM has been introduced for depillaring/pillar retreating in the country to date. Based on past rock mechanics experiences with conventional depillaring faces, stability issues of the pillars, fenders, and stumps in and around the depillaring face are discussed. This may prove to be an important factor in the success of future CM faces. It is recognized that the application of the modern strata movement monitoring techniques may improve operation safety by providing valuable qualitative and quantitative information that can be used to improve the design of modern concepts like roof bolt based breaker line support during pillaring.

A major question in the design and permitting of a tailings storage facility is the quality and quantity of seepage which will occur from the base of the tailings facility into the underlying foundation and groundwater regime. A corollary to this is what liner system, if any, is necessary to protect the groundwater regime from unacceptable contamination. Modern tailings storage facilities are generally designed as drained tailings deposits whereby all free water is removed from the facility by decant, drainage and evaporation. This removes the source of on­going seepage and allows for efficient and timely reclamation of the facilities. Quantifying the residual seepage from the base of the tailings deposit is complicated due to the following factors:

The beneficiation of barite has been the subject of many investigations at CANMET, thus reflecting barite's importance as an industrial mineral. Fifty-one studies relating to various aspects of beneficiation were conducted between 1920 and 1986, and a review of some of the more important studies is presented. The information, including mineralogy, beneficiation methods and results, flotation parameters, and reagent concentration data, is presented in tabular form. By so arranging the principal data, the research worker and production metallurgist will be assisted in the evaluation of barite ores from a variety of origins.

Conventional straight-radial SAG mill pulp lifters suffer from incomplete discharge of the rock portion of the charge. The resulting backflow of undischarged rock limits pulp lifter performance and is the major source of wear in pulp lifters. Backflow is increased in pulp discharge cone systems where multiple channels converge towards the central diversion cone. This paper covers recent experience with pulp lifter and discharge cone design supported by a single particle motion model that illustrates the discharge and backflow characteristics of pulp lifters, including the impact of discharge cone configuration.

Introduction Flotation is a recovery process that utilizes natural or chemically-introduced hydrophobicity of minerals to separate ore from gangue by attaching the ore particles to bubbles. Flotation has been known since 1906, when it was patented by E. L. Sulman, H. G. K. Pickard and John Ballot. Flotation's first documented plant use was in 1911, when it was used on gravity tailings from a zinc plant. Cyanide leaching was first patented in 1887. Most early precious metals flotation was linked to lead or copper concentrates. Most precious metal flotation is linked to sulfide recovery and utilizes such reagents as xanthates, dithiophosphates and thiocarbanilides. But the involvement of flotation in precious metals recovery does not have to be limited to active flotation of the gold and silver bearing minerals. Flotation can be used to remove interfering minerals, such as carbon, or cyanicides, such as copper, arsenic bearing minerals or other cyanide complexing minerals. Cyanide Leaching The use of cyanide to recover precious metals is the backbone of the industry. The various recovery processes that use cyanide are: 1. Leaching-Counter Current Decantation(CCD) Merrill-Crowe 2. Carbon-in-pulp (CIP) 3. Carbon-in-leach (CIL) 4. Vat leaching 5. Heap leaching These processes are selected depending on ore grade, ore leaching characteristics, reserve size and capital limitations. Ore grade is used as the first criteria to determine the type of cyanide plant required. However, the reserve size can determine whether a ground ore alternative is used. The ore leaching characteristics may indicate that the higher recovery, associated with a process that employs grinding, is the only economic recovery alternative. There are some extremely large leaching plants with grades that would be non-economic for some existing heap leach plants. Many factors, such as strip ratios, metal recovery and reserve size, determine what the ultimate plant design will be. The exact processing scheme that is used, is a multifaceted decision matrix, which gives the process metallurgist some job security. Precious Metal Recovery Using Flotation Flotation recovery can conceivably be used on any ore that has been ground. Many operations utilize gravity separation on the ore to remove native gold from the ore prior to sending it to cyanide leaching. INTRODUCTION A two-dimensional approach for modeling narrow-vein deposits using the TECHBASE® software was implemented at Sunshine Mining for its use in the evaluation of mineral properties. This 2-D approach prevents the overestimation of high-grade tons typically associated with the use of fixed 3-D blocks and reduces the size of the model in computer memory. The method consists of constructing a two-dimensional model oriented along the average plane of the mineralized structure. This approach works well for single, multiple and intersecting veins with the condition that each vein is roughly planar with variation in dip or strike less than 30" in order to maintain a reasonable resolution in the process of projecting data onto a plane (Figure 1). Also, a precise identification of the hanging-wall and foot-wall location is critical in ensuring an accurate representation of the vein. By using various modeling techniques, the two-dimensional model estimates metal content, thickness, tonnage, economic and dilution parameters which will be ultimately used in the identification of minable reserves. The following is a generic description of the steps involved in modeling a steeply dipping vein. DATA ENTRY A typical project database consists of drillhole coordinates, survey information, assay data and any other quantitative or qualitative data. This database can be created inside the software or imported from any spreadsheet. TECHBASE® utilizes the concept of "fields" and "records" (columns and rows) for storing data. The use of "calculated fields" enables the user to expand on the manipulation of the database with minimum memory requirements. Another important feature of TECHBASE® is the ability to replicate the structure and format of the "tables" for its use in another project and the capability of running a series of repetitive tasks by means of batch and "runlog" files.

Geographic Information Systems (GIS) are becoming a more commonly used tool for resource estimation as they provide not only a database management platform, but also the graphical capabilities to visualize resource characteristics. Interpolation methods used commonly in these resource studies do not typically provide a quantitative answer to the question: "How accurate is the estimate?" By comparing localized measurements at several locations to the interpolated thickness distribution used in a resource estimate, a quantitative analysis of accuracy can be obtained. The technique is demonstrated with a case study from Central Appalachia.

Introduction Trying to synthesize innovations occurring in gold processing is not simple. At present, this technology is exploding, brought about by the high price of gold. This price has compelled the mining industry, as a matter of survival, to produce gold. The frantic search for gold deposits continues, from glacial areas to tropical jungles. The search has been fruitful. New exploration techniques have helped to locate deposits. Some are amenable to conventional processing techniques. Others are in unusual settings that challenge the ingenuity of extractive metallurgists. Ore deposits containing traces of invisible gold, refractory mineralization, and impurities and deleterious materials that previously defied treatment are now being profitably processed. Metallurgists have developed various processing methods and equipment for gold ore treatment that reflect differences in ore characteristics, grade, mineralogy, reserves, topography, climate, and location. These processes can be categorized as: • For nonrefractory or readily leachable gold ores - vat leaching, heap leaching, and agitation leaching. • For ores containing free gold - gravity concentration methods, followed by mercury amalgamation, and • For refractory gold ores - flotation, roasting, pressure oxidation, followed by cyanidation leaching. In actual practice, a combination of these processes may be required. This is because gold mineralization, although usually simple, may be associated with other mineral species or with clays that make the ore difficult to treat. Furthermore, after the gold has been solubilized to form a cyanide complex, one of two important processes must be applied to recover the gold. These ore zinc cementation (Merrill-Crow process) and Carbon adsorption, desorption, and electrowinning. New techniques for leaching and recovery are also advancing. These will become the bases for the next generation of gold processing plants. Nonrefractory Gold Ores Nonrefractory ores with readily leachable gold are among the .easiest to treat. Even so, non-refractory ores from epithermal deposits are likely to contain too much clay. When these ores are damp, they may clog the screens and cone crushers. Depending on the type of process, scrubbing the crushed ore is very effective in overcoming clay problems. After dewatering, the slimes enter the cyanidation process and the thickener overflow is stripped of gold values and recycled. Semiautogenous (SAG) mills are also gaining popularity due to lower capital costs and ability to treat wet, sticky ores. If properly sized, the secondary crushing and screening plants, together with a secondary ball mill, can be eliminated. When the ore is of such a low grade that it can not support fine grinding, vat or heap 'teaching may be applicable. These systems are being actively applied in the US and elsewhere. Rapid construction and low capital costs are important features of these plants. Vat leaching is ideally suited for fast leaching ores and small tonnage deposits located in areas with harsh winters or wet tropical climates. For effective vat leaching, the ore is crushed to less than 25 mm (1 in.), agglomerated with lime or cement to control fines, and leached with sodium cyanide solution (upflow or downflow). The Buchans mining district is located roughly at the center of the island of Newfoundland and contains some 18 separate mineral deposits. The first of these deposits was discovered in 1905, the latest discovery having been made in 1979. To the present (1983), some 16 Mt (17.7 million st) grading 1.33% Cu, 7.5% Pb, 14.5% Zn, 115 g/ t (3.7 oz per ton) Ag, and 1.4 g/t (0.04 oz per ton) Au have been mined. Mining operations are now largely terminated, but a few hundred thousand tons of economically marginal reserves may be mined in a salvage operation. The Geological Association of Canada Special Paper No. 22, "The Buchans Orebodies, 50 years of Mining and Exploration," contains papers which describe the history, geology, and the application of evolving geological concepts in exploration. Papers by Neary, Swanson, and Thurlow and Swanson in that volume are topical to the present discussion. Successful exploration techniques at Buchans included physical prospecting, utilization of the state-of-the-art geophysical techniques, saturation diamond drilling which was made possible by the high gross value of the existing ore, and, since 1955, diamond drilling directed by fairly well understood geological parameters. The record of discovery started in 1905 when the Buchans River deposit was found by Matty Mitchell, a prospector employed by the Anglo- Newfoundland Development Co., a British company which owned mineral rights over a very large area in the Red Indian Lake-Exploits River drainage system.
