The use of Dynamic Analysis techniques in the design of conveyor systems is extremely limited. The most frequent use of the technique is in large and expensive systems where the emphasis is on insurance against failure caused by catastrophic tension waves. This paper sets out to illustrate a much wider range of applications where dynamic analysis has been successfully employed. The examples chosen deal with identification and correction of dynamic low tension problems, the variability in take-up movement as other system parameters change, the requirement for proper tuning of starting controls and finally the absolute necessity for a complete understanding of the entire system when specifying brakes for critical applications. The intent of the paper is to get designers to view a conveyor as a system of interacting flexible components rather than as a single rigid body.

Rather than attempting to present a summary of the many and highly varied papers that have been presented at this symposium on sampling and grade control, I will attempt to extract the general philosophy of analysis and approach, and attempt to identify the trend of future developments. First, the term "sampling" is used with its broadest connotations. A sample consists of a representative portion of a larger mass, and must represent the mass not only in the grade of contained metals or minerals, but also in all other respects in terms of mineralogy and mineral quality (1, 5), deleterious materials, recoverability of economic components, physical behavior, geophysical response (1), and even archaeological and environmental aspects (7, 11). The sample must be taken from a locality and in such a manner and quantity that it is representative of the larger rock mass. This calls for complete and accurate geological control and an understanding of the nature and distribution of the contained chemical and physical elements and a record of the effectiveness of the different sampling methods. Second, value of a given mass of ore material is based upon its profitability - the difference between recoverable value and costs to achieve recovery, beneficiation and sale. There is a strong movement in mining geology control toward more complete analysis in determining cutoff grades and in grade control, as illustrated by the kriging of metallurgical recovery factors as well as grade at the Mercur Mine (8). To achieve a "profitability factor" as a guide for economic mining practice requires further integration of: 1) the value of contained metal or mineral, 2) percentage recovery of values, 3) dilution of ore with waste rock, 4) addition to, or loss of value as a consequence of by-product materials or deleterious components, 5) cost of producing a saleable product plus minimum profit to justify the effort (cutoff), and 6) cost of land restoration (7, 11). All these parameters vary with the rock type, rock structure, mineralogy, depth, geometry, mining and metallurgical methods, but they must be sampled and analyzed if sampling and grade control are to reflect profitability. A wide variety of deposits has been presented at this symposium; each deposit with its own problems and special solutions. Deposits containing high unit-value components, e.g. precious metals and diamonds, present special problems in the obtaining of accurate samples and generally require statistical analysis control methods or may disregard or modify occasional high or occasional low values, based upon experience (12). Grade control may be accurate for the long term but may vary for the short term. Bulk sampling is always essential. Deposits containing metals or minerals with low unit value are very sensitive to transport costs, and they are often very sensitive to small amounts of deleterious components or differences in physical or chemical behavior. Problems of sampling and grade control change with the genetic type of deposit, with the stage of deposit development and with the size of the information base. Precious metal epithermal deposits (2, 6, 8), because of rapid vertical zonation and erratic lateral distribution of values, have always been difficult to evaluate and maintain grade control and ore reserves. On the other hand, evaluation and grade control are relatively easy in bulk-lowgrade deposits (4, 13). However, these deposits generally have a low margin of profit and are sensitive to mining and beneficiaton costs, price fluctuations and political costs. Industrial mineral deposits (5) often must be evaluated on the basis of their behavior, rather than by chemical analysis. Environmental impact generally increases with the scale of the operation, but certain elements or minerals have especially high impact effects (7, 11). In the exploration phase there is no production control of sampling procedures and careful geological observations are particularly essential. The greatest number of problems is related to the oxidized outcrop where the chemical environment of the ore body has changed and the contained values may have been enriched, depleted or values left unchanged (2, 6). Present evidence suggests that gold values may be very mobile under certain conditions (2, 6) and stable under others. Everything must be sampled in detail. Principal values and by-product or deleterious elements may vary dependent upon their position within the soil profile. Such factors as geomorphic position, erosion rate, vegetation, climate, etc., may affect the interpretation (1, 3). Mineral resources comprise of metallic, non-metallic, and fossil fuels. Our civilization, and the associated economic and industrial developments are inherently dependent on the availability and use of minerals. This is evident from historical development and identification of civilization eras throughout human history: the stone age, the iron age, the bronze age, and the current computer age. This paper deals with the depletable fossil fuel sector of minerals; this is represented by crude oil, natural gas, and coal. Fossil fuels provide approximately 80% of total global primary energy supply; the rest being provided by renewables (wind, hydrothermal, solar), nuclear, and biomass. Economic, industrial, and population growth will, inevitably, lead to an increase in demand for energy. In general, per capita energy consumption is correlated with per capita income, with the US showing the highest energy use per capita, and South Asia having the lowest. This paper examines the underlying interrelated issues (factors) of energy reserves, production, scarcity, depletion, economic, and technological factors and impact on long term availability and thus sustainability. Is it possible to extend the time to economic depletion of these resources? This will have an impact, direct or otherwise on total energy availability, and the inter-temporal allocation of the resource. Specific economic and physical parameters relevant to mineral supply and their respective impact on depletion, and inter-temporal welfare are investigated. These variables include own price, substitute price, population, income, technical innovation-both on supply as well demand, and resource substitution.

The scale effect on rock properties has been discussed and studied since the introduction of the weakest-link idea by Weibull (1939). In this study, the capabilities of a dynamic lattice network model to simulate failure of rock under uniaxial tension is utilized. A number of randomly distributed microcracks that contribute to the development of uneven stressfields are introduced. In addition, each unit element in the model is assigned a random value representing its strength properties. Each application creates a randomly created specimen that is subjected to uniaxial tension. The specimens are grouped into three sets according to their size. The results of the study show that the scale effect is present in a statistical sense, i.e., the observed statistical distributions of strength for each specimen group is distinctly separate, and they follow the expected inverse relationship between strength and size. The observed probability distribution for each group of specimens give rise to the estimation of a different set of parameters. In this paper, the potential relationships among these parameters as a function of specimen size is investigated.

More efficient classification with a single hydrocyclone through equipment and/or operating design changes does not appear possible. However, improvement in classification efficiency by increasing the sharpness index and decreasing the apparent by-passing while changing the cut size is possible through proper staging of inefficient hydrocyclones. But feasible multistaging requires achieving the necessary material balances around the units. Because of the interactions among the units, these balances require extensive iterations. The final step before commerical installation should be a laboratory demonstration, in order to define the control algorithm required to maintain stability. However, eventually a sufficient knowledge base should be developed that will permit simulation in place of laboratory testing as well as the incorporation of a feed forward strategy.

The recent recession has severely impacted the performance and results of virtually all of our natural resource companies. The depressing climate continues to linger and recovery maybe sometime away. Problems remain for resource companies in the steel and petroleum industries as well as the mining business. In February, at the AIME Annual Meeting in New York, an All-Institute session presented a variety of views on the situation. A. T. Yu, chairman of ORBA Corp., Mountain Lakes, NJ, organized presentations by top management personnel of four natural resource companies. This well attended session heard management strategems for the present and views for the future. A compilation and synthesis of these presentations, gathered by Dr. Yu, are presented here for ME readers. Leading off will be William A. Griffith, president and chief executive officer of Hecla Mining Co., Wallace, ID. Other speakers presented here include Wilfred P. Schmoe, executive vice president of Du Pont Co., Wilmington, DE; Frank W. Luerssen, chairman and chief executive officer of Inland Steel Co., Chicago, IL; and Adam H. Zimmerman, president and chief operating officer of Noranda Mines Ltd., Toronto, Ontario. First, then Griffith's remarks. Introduction The key to successfully managing a natural resource company in austere times is good management in good times. In other words, position the company during prosperous times to survive the times when the well dries up. Although we know how to manage properly, for various reasons we sometimes do not do it. We forget the lessons of history. We allow ourselves to be carried away by our egos. We fail to position our companies properly in good times. As a result, in bad times we find ourselves in deep trouble. We need constant reeducation in the things we already know. In the natural resource industries, proper positioning in good times involves becoming a low-cost producer, retaining the flexibility to pull in our horns, developing a lean and effective organization, and maintaining a healthy balance sheet. Nothing improves the chance of survival during austere times as much as being able to produce at a lower cost than your competitors. In our business, that means having low-cost mines - low cost because the ore bodies are high grade or favorably located, and because they are efficiently operated. It also means recognizing the competition. The key numbers are the cost to produce an ounce of silver or gold. Nothing else really counts. And our competition is every other precious metal mine in the world. Flexibility is important when one gets stuck with a high-cost operation, often because things do not work out as we expect. It is important to be able to shut down an operation quickly and easily, without high holding costs, and without disrupting the corporate organization. A lean and mean, effective organization of competent people is vital during bad times. A company will not have that if it is not developed and maintained during good times. INTRODUCTION Denmark is a small country with a population of about 5.5 million in the north of Europe. A substantial part of Denmark consists of islands, and the Danes have been familiar with ferry links between their islands for ages. However, their wish for fixed links has resulted in the con¬struction of bridges between most of Denmark's islands in this century. (Fig. 1) A fixed link across the Store Belt or Great Belt, Denmark's most important waterway bet¬ween the island of Fyn and main island of Sjaelland, on which the capital of Copenhagen is situated, has remained to be constructed hitherto. In 1987, the Danish government decided that the Great Belt should be crossed by a fixed link, incorporating a two-track railway line and four-lane motorway. The Storebaelt Forbindelsen AS, a joint stock company in the sole ownership of the Dan¬ish state, has been established for the purpose of planning, constructing and operating the Great Belt Link. The company will refinance the construction project by charging toll to the motorway users and fees to the state railway. Here it should be mentioned that Denmark and Sweden are about to jointly realize the fixed rail and road link across the Øresund or The Sound between Denmark and Sweden on the basis of the realization model of the Great Belt link. At present, the project is at the com¬petitive tendering or contract awarding stage. In the near future, also the third fixed link of comparable extent, that is the crossing of the Fehmarn Belt between Denmark and Germany, will go into the decisive projecting stage prob¬ably in conformity with the aforementioned pattern. Going back to the Great Belt, it should be noted that this fixed link involves three exten¬sive sections and has been under construction since December 1988.

In 1962 a computerized data processing system was first installed and programmed for the grading of direct-shipping iron ore from the Sept-Iles terminal of the Iron Ore Company of Canada. Over the years several changes and improvements have been incorporated into this system. It is the purpose of this paper to describe its present operation and features. Sept-Iles is located on the north shore of the St. Lawrence River, 500 miles north east of Montreal. The direct-shipping ore is received by railroad from Schefferville, 320 miles to the north in the Knob Lake Iron Range of New Quebec and Labrador. The shipping season extends from mid-March to December. The maximum tonnage handled in this period being 13,045,000 long tons in 1959. Crude ore receipts for 1974 amounted to 6,568,000 tons of direct-shipping and 4,700,000 tons of plant feed material from Schefferville. This was augmented by 4,447,000 tons of concentrate and 7,572,000 tons of pellets from Labrador City 200 miles north of Sept-Iles. The direct-shipping ore has come from as many as ten mines, and grade variations, even-within the same mines, have been sufficient to require blending for uniform, acceptable cargos. Shipments of low phosphorous, non bessemer and manganiforous iron ore are made, to Canada, the United States, Europe and Japan with grade variations to meet customers requirements.

Most of the bauxite deposits in Europe belong to the karst type. They are located mainly ill Southern Europe along the Mediterranean Sea and in the Ural Mountains. Lateritic bauxite deposits occur on the Russian Platform, in Poland, Northern Ireland and in Turkey. Tikhvin-type deposits arc found on the Russian Platform. Bauxite formation in Europe started in the Middle Devonian. The main bauxite forming period was the Upper Cretaceous. Very few bauxites are younger than Eocene. Most deposits are covered by overburden of up to 1000 m. Prospecting is carried out by drilling. Several geophysical methods are used to detect the hidden deposits. Geostatistical methods were introduced in several countries for evaluation of the reserves and the geometry of the deposits. Data on bauxite production are given for 1982 and since the beginning of mining in Europe.

INTRODUCTION The Tunnel and Reservoir Plan (TARP), commonly known as the Deep Tunnel Project, is the daring and unique concept developed by the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago (MWRDGC) as a two-phase solution to the problem of waterway pollution and basement flooding due to sewer system backups created by the combined sewer over-flows (CSOs). Phase I, primarily for pollution control, includes the tunnels, shafts, connecting sewers and structures. These Phase I facilities intercept, during wet weather events, the CSOs within the MWRDGC TARP service area. The tunnels and shafts provide temporary storage of the CSOs for subsequent treatment at Water Reclamation Plants (WRP) before discharging into waterways. Ultimately, upon completion of Phase II, the tunnels, located from 45 m(150 ft) to 100 m (330 ft) below ground, will convey the CSOs to reservoirs for storage until WRP capacity is available. Phase II, which includes the reservoirs, pumping facilities, additional tunnels and shafts, has been planned to serve a dual purpose. The reservoirs provide storage of excess flows during wet weather events, those beyond the WRP capacity. Following the wet weather events, the stored flows can be conveyed, at controlled rates, to the WRPs for full treatment. These excess flows previously would have resulted in both overflows into the waterways and eventually backups in the local sewer systems. The storage capacity of the reservoirs also will promote the full utilization of the conveyance capacity of the tunnels and shafts, which in turn results in optimizing the conveyance capacity of the existing sewer systems. Therefore pollution control is further enhanced by allowing for capture of a greater volume of CSOs and greatly minimizing backups in the local sewer systems. The TARP project consists of four systems: O’Hare, Mainstream, Des Plaines, and Calumet, covering a total area of 971 km2 (375 mi2) and serving the City of Chicago and 51neighboring communities as shown in Figure1. With only two contracts left before completion of the Phase I tunnels, the 12.7km (7.9mi) Torrence Avenue leg, to be awarded in 1997, and the 12.4km (7.7mi) Little Calumet leg unfunded as of yet, both part of the Calumet System, the pollution control phase of the project is now 86% complete (Table 1).

The Crandall Canyon accident investigation included an interesting and unexplained observation by rescuers that the ?barrier rib had shifted northward as a unit, as much as 10 feet.? This is not the first mention of such a movement, although such reports are rare. Historical accounts describe unusual movement and displacement of intact coal, cribs and timbers. Two movements of particular interest are the creation of gaps above coal pillars and falling of standing support elements without apparent damage. A dynamic boundary element program was used to explore movements induced by slip on geologic features removed from the affected panel. While the resulting models are much too simple to fully replicate these observations, they do show that the types of phenomena observed are possible. They can also provide insight into the types of motions that ground support elements are subjected to during large bump events. This was demonstrated for the case of a large bump in a Book Cliffs coal mine. Seismic information suggested the source mechanism to be normal slip on a fault. A model of that source showed initial dilation of the panel followed by dynamic compression and rebound ? consistent with underground observations. The initial dilation is important as it may allow slender standing support to shift or fall.

During the induration of fluxed taconite pellets, alkali salts deposit on the grate support bars, causing severe corrosive degradation of these alloys. To determine the source of these deposits and to understand the mechanism by which the salts are conveyed to the grate bars, a study of the reactions between fluxed pellets and combustion gas was carried out. The study focused on the thermodynamics and kinetics of several processes associated with induration; namely, oxidation of magnetite, calcination of flux, and the formation and gaseous transport of various alkali salt species. Both theoretical and experimental techniques were used. It was concluded that the principal source of alkali salt deposits is alkali chlorides, which are present as contaminants in the flux and/or residue from contaminated washwater. The pathway from pellet to grate bar involves the following steps: evaporation of chloride salts within the pellet; diffusion of salt vapor out of the pellet, aided by the outflow of CO2 from calcination of the flux; convective transport by the combustion gas with concurrent (partial) conversion to alkali sulfates by reaction with residual SOX in the combustion gas; and condensation of salts on the grate bars.

A common belief is that autogenous grinding suits itself only to certain oretypes. It is shown that properly designed autogenous grinding can be used even with very difficult ores with energy consumptions which are equal or lower than obtained with rod-ball mill grinding. The basic feature in the design is the large port grate developed by Outokumpu. The scale-up of the mills can be done on the basis of the base mill concept. It enables to compare different mill sizes and types. Simple scale-up equations are presented based on actual mill data and experimental work.

Porphyry-type deposits are characterized by mineralization in, as well as adjacent to, an igneous body, usually a porphyritic stock. One deposit style includes both mineral dissemination and mineralized veinlets, and both porphyry copper and porphyry molybdenum deposits are characterized by dissemination and veinlet control of ore minerals. Those gold deposits that occur in stocks, with gold occur- ring in veinlets and disseminations within the stock, clearly are can- didates for consideration as porphyry gold type. Porphyry copper and porphyry molybdenum deposits are also characterized by potassic, phyllic, argillic, orpropyllitic alteration or some combination of these alteration types. Where two or more alteration zones are present, these are arranged in a sequential outcrop pattern. Gold occurring in dissemination and in veinlets in as well as adjacent to stocks, and which also occur in typical pervasive porphyry alteration suits, constitute a clearly defined class of deposit that fits the definition of a porphyry gold type. Porphyry copper deposits may carry appreciable gold. Porphyry copper-gold deposits are known from all porphyry copper provinces. This chapter is intended to cover porphyry gold occurrences that may have little or no copper or molybdenum as economic concentrations.

Long-term coal mining plans are often based on attainment of an average cost of coal. This is achieved by blending low- and high-cost coal production. Coal that is beyond the economic limit of the reserve is mined in a misguided effort to improve reserve recovery. Long-term contracts should be least cost-based and generate the best net present value from the economic reserve within the context of a rational mine plan. The selected economic reserve should he mined on a low- to high-cost basis to benefit from the time value of money.

Mineral exploration decision problems involve the economic evaluation of upgraded geological information and the costs of obtaining it. This paper presents a valuation theory of risky projects applicable to the analysis of exploration investments. The valuation model is predicated on the Capital Asset Pricing Model (CAPM) from financial economics; its parameters can be objectively measured from publicly available information. Geostatistics is used to derive simplified random cash flow models which incorporate the impact of improved deposit knowledge in terms of reduced estimation variance. The application of the theory is illustrated by means of hypothetical exploration optimization examples.

The Central City district is one of several adjacent mining areas in the Front Range, Colorado, that contain precious metal-bearing sulfide veins of Laramide (Late Cretaceous and early Tertiary) age. The districts are in the Front Range segment of the Colorado mineral belt, and are characterized by porphyritic igneous rocks of intermediate composition that have intruded Precambrian crystalline rocks in the core of the Front Range. The veins and minor stockworks that constitute the ore deposits in the district were formed largely as fracture fillings. The veins range from simple fissures to complex, branching lodes, and commonly range from less than 0.5 to about 1 m in width. The principal values are in gold and silver. The common metallic minerals are pyrite, sphalerite, chalcopyrite, tennantite, and galena; minor minerals are enargite, pitchblende, and gold tellurides. Quartz, cryptocrystalline silica, carbonates, fluorite, and barite compose the gangue. The ore deposits have a well-defined concentric zonal arrangement. A core of pyrite veins (central zone) is surrounded by a peripheral zone of galena-sphalerite vein with gold and silver. An intermediate zone contains transitional veins that have minerals characteristic of both the central and peripheral zones. The minerals were deposited in three stages during a single period of mineralization: uranium; pyrite; base metals, gold and silver. The wall rocks were altered primarily during pyrite-stage mineralization. Sericite envelopes developed adjacent to fractures, and were succeeded outward by zones of argillized rock. The valuable ore minerals were deposited in ore shoots localized by several types of structural controls, principally vein intersections, the physical nature and structure of the wall rocks, and irregularities along the fractures themselves. During supergene alteration, gold was concentrated in the upper, oxidized parts of the veins, commonly to depths of 50 m. The precious metal-bearing sulfide ore deposits are closely associated in space and time with the Laramide porphyritic igneous rocks and are believed to have been derived from hydrothermal fluids related to the magmatic activity. The ore deposits have mesothermal aspects and apparently formed in the temperature range 200°-320°C.

Economic operation of a mine ventilation system must include some means by which operating costs can be quantified and evaluated periodically. Current practice at most mines relies upon the best judgement of foremen, engineers and managers to identify high cost or problem areas in the system and to estimate potential costs and benefits of work proposed to reduce inefficiencies. The problem with this is that significant savings can be overlooked or sub-economic projects may be undertaken when sufficient attention is not paid to the interrelationship between airflow characteristics and corporate financial criteria. In order to accurately determine costs and benefits it is necessary to view the solution of each potential ventilation problem as a separate economic opportunity.

Lake stone is a term currently applied to chemical and metallurgical grade limestone or dolomite that is brought down Lakes Michigan and Huron by large cargo vessels, mostly self-unloaders. This stone comes from 5 quarries, all in Michigan and all steel company owned. The volume in 1973 was over 34 million tons. The primary reasons for the large volume are the quantity and quality of the stone available, and the low delivery costs to lower lakes markets. The source rocks are Silurian and Devonian limestones and dolomites of exceptional purity. The regional dip of these formations is 50 to 60 feet per mile southerly toward the lowest point in the Michigan structural basin, which is near the center of the Southern Peninsula. Two of the 5 quarries, both high calcium limestone sources, are on Lake Huron in the northeastern part of the Southern Peninsula. The other three are in the Northern Peninsula; one at the northern end of Lake Michigan, and two on northern Lake Huron. The western quarry is in limestone, the other two in dolomite.

Efficient transport of bulk materials by belt conveyor systems is an important engineering design issue, especially as conveyors become longer and power requirements increase. It is well known within the industry that the parasitic energy loss of a belt conveyor, due to the indentation of the idlers into the belt backing material can be upwards of half the total energy required to drive it on a horizontal flight. Other loss sources includes the rolling resistance of the idlers, belt/roller misalignments, material trampling, frictional and acceleration losses on loading, etc., but energy absorbed by indentation of the belt backing as it passes over each successive idler is the dominant power consuming factor. INDENTATION LOSS MODELS Models to predict the rolling resistance of a cylinder (idler) on a viscoelastic foundation (backing material) have been available for some time. As a contact problem, it is nonlinear (contact length or indentation depth is a dependent on the load and vice versa) in load/deformation response. Rubber backing material is generally assumed to behave as a linear viscoelastic solid, even though it is known that most rubber compounds retain linearity only at very low strains. Because completely general solutions are impossible, practical solutions require simplifying assumptions. Those assumptions relate naturally to two separate pans of any analytical model: I. The deformation model-aspects of the problem relating to the geometry, boundary conditions and kinematics of how the material deforms. 2. The material model-aspects of the problem relating to the material properties, or constitutive relationships, i.e., the stress/strain relationships.
