Fine-coal screening can be one of the most critical operations in a modern coal-cleaning plant. The yield and quality of clean coal produced in fine-coal circuits is controlled as much by how efficiently 0.15 mm (100 mesh) particles are sized as on the performance traits of the fine-coal cleaning device itself. In addition, the increased interest in effective fine-coal sizing operations indicates that many operators have also discovered its importance in affecting the quality and yield of clean coal produced in fine-coal circuits. This paper describes the three most prevalently used fine-coal screening technologies and discusses their sizing mechanism, performance, and application.

"Since the adoption of the Rio-Declaration in 1992 the concept of sustainable development is raising more and more awareness in public perception. The World Commission on Economic Development WCED has defined sustainable development as the concept that "meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of the future generations to meet their own needs". The concept requires the integration of economic, environmental and social considerations into all decision making, fostering intra-generational equity through the alleviation of poverty by concentrating the benefits of development in lesser developed areas; and considering the needs of future generations to ensure that inter-generation equity exists. This paper is devoted to give a review of the current status quo of the discussion. It describes the achievements of the mineral industries on their progress towards sustainable development since the Milos Conference (SDIMI 2003), but also discusses future challenges and obstacles."

The problems of toxic, noxious, and explo¬sive atmospheres caused by gases and dusts are certain special environmental considerations in underground mining. Some other problems unique to underground mining are design of stable structures in the strata and their support, lighting the workings, and control of noise in confined spaces. These affect the health and safety of the workmen and deserve critical analyses. Some of the most important environmental parameters of underground mining are summarized in Table 1. The list is not exhaustive but illustrates the scope of environmental planning in underground mining. This chapter will discuss the use of computers and computer models in mine atmospheric environmental planning.

Experimental investigations of single particle and interparticle breakage show that the microprocess in mills demands an energy input between 1 J/g and 10 J/g, if particles below 100 pm have to be comminuted. A system analysis of grinding media and roller mills is given in respect to the energy supply to the microprocess and the influence of the back stream caused by the compression of the material inside the active volume. The back stream diminishes the probability for capturing the particles in very fine grinding processes. Some possibilities are discussed how to solve this problem.

The Superconducting Super Collider (SSC) features two 20 TeV counter rotating proton beams which will be housed in 87 km (54 miles) of tunnel. Four additional lower energy particle accelerators will be housed in 26 km (16 miles) of tunnel and underground structures. Physics experiments will be conducted in two underground detector halls approximately 67 m (220 feet) deep with footprints measuring about 30 m (100 feet) by 100 m (330 feet). Definition and design of underground facilities is advanced with construction of approximately one-third of the SSC program underway. This paper presents an overview and status of the SSC project.

What does the information age mean to mining companies? The perception of greatly increased access to information is based on modern communications through ‘smart’ fax machines and computer networks. Computer media allow us to `talk' to the President or to a sister in Australia. If we need data to help put together a mining permit, we can find that data somewhere on computer media. The vast amount of easily accessible information quickly overwhelms us. To avoid `information burnout,' we must learn to target searches and be able to discriminate between dross and information that is useful to our goals. If you watch commercial TV, you have learned to screen out most product commercials. A similar screening process must be applied to computerized information sources. You may need to sort through a lot of irrelevant information before finding the pearls you are looking for. ‘Smart’ fax machines can send information with no direct human intervention. MINES FaxBac, for example, from the US Bureau of Mines instructs you to enter four-digit numbers to have particular reports sent directly to your fax machine. Software vendors use a similar system to supply information about their products. You select an item by number, and the related brochure is faxed to your machine. To compete, the industry must maintain access to as many information sources as possible. The availability of computers and software for almost every conceivable application allows us to accomplish work faster than we ever thought possible, even as recently as 10 years ago. Most mining companies have become aware that doing geology, reserves, mine planning and other technical tasks completely by hand is much too slow. The world moves faster, drilling happens faster, mining happens faster, all related activities happen faster. We no longer have the manpower or time to keep all maps. calculations and records up to date.

INTRODUCTION The rapidity of onset, rate of increase, and magni¬tude of loads in an underground support system can be measured using load cells or pressure cells, whichever is appropriate to the type of support. These instruments should be installed at the various instrumented station locations immediately after excavation. If the loading of a member is of interest, the load should be measured, whereas if the deflection or strain of a member is of interest, the strain should be mea¬sured. It makes as little sense to use a load cell to allow computation of strain as it does to measure the strain and then back calculate the load. Tunnel steel set de¬signers today invariably rely on the early work of Karl Terzaghi, the basis for which is load, so load measure¬ment should be the main concern. The current trend of using strain gages on steel sup¬port systems stems from the inability by some to eval¬uate unusual loading conditions caused by uneven block¬ing. In fact, uneven blocking will obscure almost any attempt (whether with load cells or strain gages) to properly evaluate support performance. The load curve in Fig. I shows the development of a characteristic early peak load sometimes called the "rear abutment load" seen in many underground open¬ings. It is thought that the peak reflects the coupling of the rock and the support system, and that the magnitude will increase until some yielding, or minor failure, of the support system occurs. At that time, the slight deforma¬tion of the support system promotes the formation of minute shears in the opening walls, and these shears tend to distribute stress between the support system and the adjacent rock in proportion to the relative rigidity of the support elements and the rock. In normal rock, as a result of this stress redistribu¬tion, subsequent load magnitudes generally do not reach the magnitude of the early peak load. In physically unstable (squeezing) or chemically un¬stable (swelling) rock, however, the loads experienced after passage of the early peak load may in fact show a slow, continuous increase. One of the very important purposes of load instrumentation is to provide the means for recognizing such long-term adverse trends, thus enabling the proper remedial steps to be taken. Another purpose of load instrumentation is to pro¬vide a comparison between the magnitudes of the early peak load and the subsequent stable load. The ratio of these two loads is analogous to a safety factor, and may be used to evaluate the efficiency and economy of the support system design. Aside from considerations of economy, it may be well to design support systems which do not have excessively high ratios of early peak load to subsequent stable load. Should these ratios be exces¬sively high, the support system may be so rigid that the yield or failure associated with stress redistribution may occur with explosive violence. Load cells for use in mines, tunnels, and on con¬struction projects come in many forms. Almost all, however, employ the same procedures for installation, readout, etc. Therefore the following comments are almost universal in application. LOAD CELL INSTALLATION Load cells should be installed with bases parallel to the surfaces against which they bear. Care must be taken to orient the cells so that their signal cables are protected from accidental damage as a result of con¬struction, maintenance, or cleanup activities. Most electronic load cells are compensated for tem¬perature variations likely to be encountered during nor¬mal operations. However, if a large difference is an¬ticipated between the calibration temperature [21°C (70°F)] and the average operating temperature, the cells should be conditioned to the operating temperature for at least 8 hr prior to installation. This is to insure that the initial reading, made under no-load conditions prior to installation, provides a stable value to which subse¬quent measurements can be referred. Hydraulic load cells tend to be temperature sensitive and should be used with that in mind. Also, hydraulic load cells tend to be soft compared to electronic types and will sometimes allow movement to take place in a system intended to be semirigid. Furthermore, hydrau¬lic load cells tend to be difficult to read remotely. Care must be taken to use bearing plates on both sides of load cells which are sufficiently rigid and of high enough bearing capacity to prevent bending and crush¬ing under load. This is very important with tieback load cells (basically a ring of steel) which can easily dig into bearing plates. MAINTENANCE AND TROUBLESHOOTING Except for a direct hit by a miner's axe or flyrock from a blast, most hydraulic load cells are nearly in¬destructible and require little, if any, maintenance. Hy¬draulic oil on the bearing plates is a good indication of a leak and the need for corrective action. Field maintenance of electronic load cells involves protecting the instrument and signal cable from mechani¬cal damage and from unnecessary exposure to dirt and moisture, and recognizing and correcting damage and the effects of normal wear and tear.

Power generation systems that promote energy security and environmental benefits are highly desired and pursued by a number of government and industry programs. Gasification of coal, other fossil fuels, or biomass has the technical promise of high efficiency and low or zero emission. Gasification for the purpose of electrical power generation has been researched, developed and demonstrated over the last 20 years, but for many reasons is not viewed as economically competitive. This paper describes a coal-based gasification technology well suited to mid and long-term goals of secure, environmentally clean energy. The technology should be adaptable for use with other carbon-based fuels including biomass and a full range of fossil fuels. The new zero emission gasification process is sponsored by ZECA Corporation, a continuation of the Zero Emission Coal Alliance (ZECA). ZECA has completed process design and engineering to assess the viability of a concept originated at Los Alamos National Laboratory, and the creation of a business plan to define paths for advancing the technology toward a near-term goal pilot plant. The zero emission carbon (ZEC) technology includes hydrogasification, the production of hydrogen and the carbonation of lime with CO2. For the power generation base case, the hydrogen is used in high temperature coal compatible fuel cells to produce electricity and the carbonate is calcined to produce a pure stream of CO2for sequestration. This paper provides the status of work with the ZEC technology and the availability of crucial equipment, materials and required testing. Discussions are presented for future actions to accelerate the technology assessment, testing and demonstration of a ZEC plant. Brief remarks are provided on complementary projects dealing withCO2separation and gasification costs.

INTRODUCTION Metal electrodeposition processes are of fundamental technological importance to a number of fields. Electrorefining, electrowinning, electroplating, and electrogalvanizing have all been the subject of intense study for over a century. More recently, electrochem- ical deposition has played a critical role in advances in microelectronics and lately has been an enabling technology for the production of certain nanostructured materials. Electrometallurgists have most frequently been concerned with the structure and morphology of massive deposits. For example, in metal recovery steps such as electrorefining and electrowinning, deposits demonstrating adherent coarse-grained characteristics are most desirable. In the case of electroplating, a bright fine-grained, tenacious and strongly adherent deposit is required. The fabrication of microelectronic devices and the production of nanoscale structures such as nanoparticles, nanowires, and nanorods requires a keen understanding of early stage deposition effects. The initial stages of metal deposition, usually referred to as electroclystallization, are fundamentally linked to nucleation and growth phenomena. Early stage deposits are typically very ordered. Whereas, bulk metal deposition structures are much more ran- dom. "The Freeport-McMoRan Sierrita Crystal Plant produces Copper (II) Sulfate Pentahydrate (CuSO4·5H2O) through a series of cooling crystallizers. In this process, high supersaturation and unwanted spontaneous nucleation promote fine crystals. Seeding through recycled crystal classification can manipulate the crystal size distribution (CSD) for larger crystals. Proper selection of the crystallizer for seeding can prevent spontaneous nucleation and promote final crystal size. This study shows when seeding temperature is closer to the crystallizer temperature, suspension densities in the crystallizers are promoted and overall CSD shifts to a larger size of crystals. INTRODUCTION Figure 1 shows an overview of the crystallization process. The in-plant feed flow, called Pregnant Mother Liquor (PML), enters the first crystallizer and is subsequently cooled through a series of four crystallizers. Specific temperatures are targeted for each crystallizer to ensure the crystallization process is operating within the metastable zone (MSZ). The discharged flow from crystallizer #5 then enters two cyclones. The overflow from the cyclones contains smaller crystals providing seed crystals for crystallizer #5. The underflow from the cyclones begins the drying process. The overflow from crystallizer #5 enters cyclone #3 for removal of fine crystals and seeding purposes. The underflow from cyclone #3 has the capability to provide seed crystals for crystallizer #1 or crystallizer #2. The overflow leaves the system as Spent Mother Liquor (SML). Undersize crystals dissolve into the PML and return back to crystallizer #1.THEORIES AND METALLURGICAL TESTS Seeding requires an understanding of the crystal size, solution temperature and amount of crystals that enter the crystallizers (1). For the seed crystal size, classified crystal seeds can prevent fine crystals returning back into the system which eventually leads to excessive agglomeration (2). Proper selection of the crystallizer can ensure seeding at an appropriate temperature. Seeding at a temperature much lower or higher than the saturation temperature promotes spontaneous nucleation. Typically, seeding between 4-5°F below the saturation temperature is acceptable (5). A general rule of thumb is to add the seed crystals at the temperature between the solubility curve and the metastable zone. An experiment conducted by Mettler-Toledo AutoChem, Inc. indicates seeding close to the solubility curve rather than the metastable zone promotes a lower supersaturation and nucleation rate but yields a higher growth rate and a greater number of larger crystals (1). The amount of seed crystals can not only change the suspension density but also narrows the width of the MSZ in the crystallizers. An experiment conducted by Jaroslav Nyvlt reports with the crystals absent, the maximum allowable undercooling is 6.3 degrees at a cooling rate, 5°C/hour. With the presence of crystals, it narrows the MSZ width to 2.2 degrees (4). Industrial crystallizers normally operate at suspension densities between 15% and 25% by mass. When suspension densities are lower than 15%, it increases the risk of primary nucleation and the probability of incrustations; on the other hand, if the suspension densities are greater than 25%, it can cause a greater attrition rate and increase the probability of deposits (6). Moreover, operating suspension densities between 15% and 25% are also sufficient to minimize supersaturation rate which promotes crystal growth over nucleation (2, 6)."

The relationship between bauxite and energy has two distinct aspects. On the one hand, since virtually all of the bauxite that is mined winds up as aluminum metal, the economic health and future of the bauxite industry and of the bauxite-producing countries depend on the continuing vigour and competitiveness of aluminum against alternative metals and materials. The price of aluminum is, in turn, particularly dependent on the price of energy. Hence, the need for bauxite is ultimately affected by the price of energy. The second aspect relates to location of the bauxite industry. There is no shortage of bauxite resources in the world. For various reasons, as we shall see, there is a growing tendency toward the integration of bauxite mining, bauxite refining and aluminum smelting in those countries that have the resources both of bauxite and of energy necessary to support the entire production chain. Thus, the availability of attractive energy supplies will increasingly favour development of bauxite mining: the traditional export of bauxite as a simple raw material is likely to diminish in relative terms. In short, both the amount of bauxite mined and where this mining will take place are related to energy considerations. Let us first have a brief look at the four basic activities that are involved in our integrated operations: A. The bauxite is mined and moved to an ore plant. This step does not require more than relatively modest amounts of energy normally associated with excavation, loading and shipping of any bulk material. We need about four or five tonnes of bauxite for every tonne of metal produced.

The term shortwall mining is somewhat of a mis¬nomer. It may infer a longwall mining system, but of much shorter face length. Actually, continuous pillar mining is a more descriptive term. Coal is mined using a continuous miner as would be done in pillar extrac¬tion, but with the addition of roof supports to control the caving. Face length on such a system typically is 46 to 61 m (150 to 200 ft). The coal is cut in front of the roof supports in the same direction as with a long¬wall shearing machine or plow, but it is mined with a continuous miner and shuttle cars of the same type as used in continuous mining. ROOF SUPPORTS Roof supports for shortwall mining must be con¬siderably larger than those used for longwall mining because of the additional roof to be supported by the wider 2.6- to 3.4-m (81/2- to 11-ft) cut of the continuous miner. Capacities of shortwall chocks in current use vary from about 454 to 726 t (500 to 800 st). The higher capacity as compared to longwall roof supports is needed primarily because of (1) the greater support length, hence more roof weight, and (2) the presence of draw slate in the eastern coal seams, where shortwall is being used. The most popular shortwall support currently used is the four-leg 590 t (650 st) model. This support is shown in Fig. 1. The price of this support is approxi¬mately $25,000 each. As shown in Fig. 1, the shortwall chock incorporates an unusually long forward bar that has an additional hydraulically operated extension bar to provide face support for the wide miner cut. METHOD OF OPERATION Mining Sequence In shortwall mining, two or three (depending upon the chock design) move up cycles of the chock are needed because of the miner cut width. Development of the flotation reagent scheme at Climax Molybdenum Company's mine at Climax Colorado is reviewed. Features of the mineralogy, milling practice and background of reagent changes are outlined. Special attention is given to the hitherto unpublished details of the application of depressants for copper and lead impurities. The present rougher flotation reagent scheme utilizes a neutral hydrocarbon oil, low in unsaturates and wax, as collector with a sulfated coconut oil emulsifier and pine oil frother. Lime and sodium silicate are used as rougher conditioning and slime dispersant agents. Chalcopyrite and galena impurities are de- pressed in both rougher and cleaner plants by stage addition of Nokes reagent and sodium cyanide to yield a metallurgical grade molybdenite concentrate containing greater than 90% molybdenite and less than 0.5%, 0.1% and 0.05% iron, copper and lead impurities, respectively.

Introduction Amidst the apparent chaos of the final push to complete a major construction project, a small group of specialists works with great intensity. Armed with yellow "in test" and green "turned over to operations" tags, these startup engineers follow detailed preoperational test procedures to confirm that a plant is ready to operate. They follow a test schedule designed to complete individual process system in the order they will be needed by operations. After extensive preliminary testing, the startup engineers begin the truly exciting part of their work - initial operations. The thrill of engaging the clutch for the first time on a 10,000 horsepower grinding mill makes all the long hours worthwhile. Preoperational testing and startup are of critical importance to the success of a project. No other aspect of a construction project allows such opportunities for success or failure, and no other aspect is so critically influenced by careful planning. At Bechtel, the tasks of preoperational testing and startup are among the responsibilities of the Mine and Plant Operations group. The Preoperational Testing Process Preoperational testing is the transition phase between constructon and startup on a new plant. It includes the preparation of detailed test schedules and procedures. The schedules are used to coordinate construction completion activities, so that systems are available for startup and operations in a rational sequence. The procedures form the basis for performing the testing and documenting its completion. Tests include instrument calibration, wire insulation tests, wire termination verification, mechanical alignments and inspections, and system cleaning and flushing. Where possible, the systems are then operated on water and their performance recorded. Normally, either the construction contractor or a team of specialists has the responsibility to perform preoperational testing. Witnesses to the testing may be owner operations and maintenance personnel, engineers from the design firm, or specialists assigned to the project who provide assistance and guidance to the contractor in addition to witnesing the work.

Three Federal programs exist for identifying significant environmental chemicals, including minerals, that should be tested for toxicological effects. Two programs are mandated by law and can lead to industry-funded studies; they are administered by the Environmental Protection Agency and the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry, respectively. The third is the National Toxicology Program, a Federally-funded testing initiative. This paper summarizes the three programs, describes their similarities and differences, and discusses their applicability to minerals.

Off-highway tire costs represent a significant portion of the total mining costs in openpit, truck-shovel operations. To extend the lives of tires, the site-specific factors influencing tire life should be investigated Valuable data can be obtained by combining historical operational data captured by a mine dispatch system with detailed tire and maintenance histories. Assuming that failure counts satisfy a Poisson distribution, F-tests can be applied to determine significant deviations from desired or target counts. The methodology developed in this paper can be used to identify the haul routes and loading and dumping zones that have significantly higher incidences of tire failure. Corrective action can then be targeted at these zones by modifying the shovel or truck operator practices; changing the haul route maintenance and clean up practices; or altering the bench, ramp or waste dump design parameters. An example is given of the correlation of tire separation and tire impact failures with haul routes for a fleet of nine Caterpillar 793C trucks in operation at the Chuquicamata Mine in northern Chile. A high incidence of impact failures was observed for the ex pit ore crusher and for tires installed in the left outer rear position on the trucks. The latter was postulated to be due to a preference for drivers to execute right-hand turns prior to dumping. Recommendations were made to revise crusher and dump cleanup practices and investigate the feasibility of super-elevating the surface of dumping zones to reduce ground pressure on the left rear tires.

Equipment capital operating costs represent a significant portion of the total cost of most mining operations, and a variety of computerized methods have been developed to assist in the selection and effective use of this equipment. The questions to be answered and the tools available to answer these questions vary with the type of mine to be analyzed, the stage of development of the mining venture, the size of the operation, the details required, and the technical or economic objectives to be reached. Even though a majority of publications are directed towards open pit mining operations, the underground environment is not neglected. In the early planning stages of a mining venture, equipment selection is the problem to be solved. The simplest computer systems are designed to' automate time consuming manual tasks. A data base is supplied to and maintained by the user, which describes the technical and economic characteristics of available equipment. The user specifies the physical environment within which the equipment will be used and chooses from the data base a combination of loading and transport equipment. The role of the computer is to detemine the production which will be likely reached, the associated costs, and other relevant statistics. This approach is most helpful when modeling small operations or isolated parts of larger operations.

This paper presents some results obtained from research on long-term subsidence over and near chain pillar systems - the area available to long-term subsidence in longwall operations. Although the long-term subsidence for most longwall operations is insignificant, it does exist in some cases. In the cases that showed significant long-term subsidence, it was found that the development process could be expressed by an exponential decaying function. The stability factor of the chain pillar system and the potential for long-term subsidence are the two most important factors that control the magnitude and development characteristics of the long-term subsidence process.

High operating costs and environmental restrictions have combined to increase smelting costs for precious metals to a level where many mining companies cannot afford to operate. The need for a hydro-metallurgical process to produce bullion with an efficient, economical and environmentally safe method is well recognized by the industry. This paper describes the research and development program conducted by Behrent Engineering Company in its investigation of the use of an acidic solution of thiourea for the extraction of precious metals from concentrates and high-grade ores. The areas discussed are: process design parameters, health and environmental aspects and economics of the process. The scope of this paper includes the leaching process, the recovery of precious metals from pregnant solutions and the production of dore'. Thiourea leaching offers a complete alternative to smelting and cyanidization for those concentrates and ores amenable to this process.
