"Gold rush" is usually associated the western United States - California, Nevada, and Colorado. The southeast section of the nation is known more for its rice, textiles, tobacco, indigo, and cotton. This area, though, is where it all began with gold in this country. The United States' first gold rush, in fact, is said to have started with the discovery of a 7.7-kg (17-1b) nugget in the Piedmont section of the Carolinas in 1799, some 50 years before the rush to California. The Carolina gold rush continued intermittently through 1942 when the Federal Government shut down all gold operations. Strong gold prices throughout the early part of this decade and new extractive technologies spurred a small resurgence of gold operations in South Carolina. Mind you, this is not Nevada with its flood of geologists and mining companies. Nor are there any 7.7 kg (17 lb) nuggets being discovered. But Ridgeway Mining Co., a joint venture between Kennecott Corp. and Galactic Resources, has set about mining 51 Mt (56 million st) of low-grade ore containing an estimated 43.5 t (1.4 million oz) of recoverable gold. The open pit, carbon-in-leach operation is located near the town of Ridgeway in South Carolina, about 32 km (20 miles) north of Columbia. Carolina gold North and east of Ridgeway, Piedmont Mining Co. operates the historic Haile gold mine near Kershaw, SC. And Brewer Mining Co. operates the nearby Brewer deposit. Between 1829 and 1942, South Carolina gold mines produced 10 t (318,800 oz) of gold. It all began in 1799 when Conrad Reed, son of a German immigrant farmer, found the 7.7 kg (17 lb) nugget in Little Meadow Creek, NC. His father thought the rock was worthless and used it as a doorstop, so the story goes. It took nearly three years before Conrad's father decided his doorstop was indeed gold. Gold was later discovered in the Greenville district of South Carolina. And, in 1828, Benjamin Haile discovered gold in a stream that ran through his property in Lancaster County, SC. Haile's mine became South Carolina's most famous and most productive gold mine, producing more than 7.8 t (250,000 oz). At first, miners worked the stream beds of Haile's property. There is considerable variation in the types of coal flotation circuits in use in various parts of the world. For example, Russian plants frequently use scavenger flotation, while this is almost unheard of in the United States. The numerous circuit designs are intended to address specific problems in coal flotation, or to take advantage of the peculiarities of certain coal deposits. As a result, it can be difficult to decide which circuit is best for a given application. For this paper, coal flotation circuits were collected worldwide from many operating plants. These circuits include varying degrees of conditioning, and complexity ranging from simple rougher flotation to multi-stage split- stream processing. The design goals of each circuit are described, and the advantages and disadvantages of each are discussed. Extensive sampling campaigns were carried out in two plants with the most common types of coal flotation circuit (simple rougher, and rougher with deslimed feed). The performance of each plant was evaluated, and the benefits of more sophisticated processing in each case are described.

This report describes a process for tungsten recovery from Searles Lake brines and upgrading its concentration to useful levels. The method consists of a combination of a liquid-solid and liquid-liquid extraction step and results in a product stream containing more than l00g W03/1. This technique is also effective in substantially reducing the concentration of objectionable impurities in the tungsten product. An ion exchange extraction mechanism is postulated.

At the last Comminution Symposium a challenge (Meloy and Williams, 1992) was issued to "predict the typical straight-line, self similar" tumbling mill product size distributions using a population balance model (PBM). Implicit in this challenge is the assumption that the PBM is inadequate for predicting real world grinding performance. This response is presented in three parts: I. Theoretical analysis of the general PBM and its appropriateness for comminution system modeling. II. Examination of the accuracy of prediction of real world milling behavior using linear and nonlinear PBMs. III. Evidence from recent microscale comminution research. This paper concludes with recommendations concerning future research which will: 1. further elucidate mechanisms of particle destruction and creation as well as attrition and 2. increase the accuracy of model predictions in highly nonlinear situations

The Price Road Drain Tunnel in Tempe, Arizona is part of the drainage system constructed in conjunction with the Outer Loop Highway in metropolitan Phoenix. The Outer Loop Project is a part of a much larger expressway system that includes other large drainage tunnels such as the Papago Freeway Drain Tunnels. Large diameter downhole inspection borings were utilized to obtain subsurface data for the design of these tunnels. Subsurface data obtained from the large diameter borings resulted in the development of empirical parameters that were successfully incorporated into the Geotechnical Design Summary Report and which satisfactorily predicted ground behavior, formed the basis for improved geotechnical design criteria, and facilitated the cost effective assessment of third party risk. The purpose of this paper is to describe the subsurface exploration program performed for this project and to explain the methods used to evaluate underground construction procedures.

From the perspective of a large mining company the comminution circuit design is worth keeping within the boundaries of the organisation. The correct circuit design begins from the understanding of the role of grinding. Grinding is a link only in the long "comminution chain," starting from solid rock and ending at the concentrating stage. The final target in comminution is to take a part in the maximization of Net Smelter Return, which goal provides the simultaneous considering of capital costs, operating costs and the economic effect of process results. As a general rule there will be a single crushing stage only, ahead of the grinding process. Grinding does not use any metallic grinding media at all, and there will be fine crushing for critical material in the grinding circuit. Grinding has a minimum two stages, besides, at many concentrators middling products and quite often also tailings are reground.

Process choice for a refractory gold ore can become a controversial issue, especially at the early stages of a project. This happens since at preliminary stages, a simple economic comparison among the main process options is not possible as the differences are usually smaller than the precision of estimates. This paper presents a methodology to assess the suitability of each available technologies using a heuristic approach, were technical, economic, operational and environmental aspects are taken into account using a neural network methodology. This methodology is embedded in an expert system for gold ore process design, Intelligold, which is in the final stages of development.

A combined theoretical and laboratory test program is described with the purpose of providing a useful model of the multiple radial fracturing process. A non-quantitative conceptual model is developed as the basis for detailed mathematical modeling and test planning. The model includes borehole pressurization, flaw rupture, and gas- driven fracture propagation phases. The laboratory tests are carried out in blocks of scaled rock simulant loaded to a true three-dimension stress state and with miniature propellant/explosive charges in a wellbore as the fracturing energy source. No one involved in the contruction business wants litigation, except maybe some lawyers. Contractors rarely resort to litigation unless they have sustained econmic wounds that are serious or mortal. The major cause of serious contractor losses occur because of sub-surface conditions which cannot be defined with certainty in any practicable way except as shown during construction and prove during construction to be substantially worse and more expensive to cope with than anticipated during bidding. Building, Dam and Highway contractors are generally close in their estimates of cost after they get foundations excavated and are building above ground. Their main risk in bidding is the cost of getting out of the ground compared to their estimate. So maybe 10%, 20% or even 30% of their project represent high risk underground work. The tunneling and underground contractor is dealing with high risk work for virtually 100% of his project. He appreciates this risk and is willing to assume it up to a bearable limit. His costs are highly sensitive to relatively small variations of the ground in underground work. His work is unique in other respects. As contrasted with other types of construction where loads develop as construction progresses and do not reach ultimate until the project becomes operative, tunnel and underground construction requires the immediate structural support of ultimate loads that are there when he digs or very soon thereafter. Technical and managerial innovations in the minerals industry have allowed continuing mining activities in the United States, and elsewhere, as gold orebody quality has diminished or has become more refractory. Of course, world markets, permitting requirements, and political processes also have created a need for innovative practices that contribute to the survival of the mineral industry. The gold industry has been transformed, during the past approximately 40 years, from a predominantly underground mining and milling type of exploitation and extraction to the large-scale, relatively low-grade type of extraction that is common in the United States today. Indeed, with the introduction of gold heap-leaching technology and the development of mines that produce from large, relatively low-grade gold orebodies in the western United States, a "new" industry was born and continues to prosper today. It is worthwhile noting, however, that Dobra (1997) has reported that one of the major trends in the North American gold industry is a movement back toward underground developments.

The economic profitability of any mineral company is dependent upon maximizing mineral recoveries while minimizing costs. The effectiveness of any strategy to meet this objective is dependent upon firstly obtaining quantitative information concerning the steady-state metallurgical balance of the plant, and secondly, how efficiently this information is used to improve/optimize plant performance. This two-step approach can be designated as a "plant audit." Plant audits on a routine basis can be very expensive and time-consuming. Most plants have reduced staffs to cut costs. The remaining staff has to spend time to solve production/operation problems, thereby leaving limited resources (i.e., people, time, and money), for plant auditing. This paper briefly reviews plant auditing categories, and a systematic approach to auditing which has been successfully used at several operations. An example illustrating the use of this approach in gold operations is discussed in this paper.

High methane liberation and mining depth were two major factors which prompted the development of a high- capacity face ventilation system at Jim Walter Re- sources, Inc., No. 4 Mine. No. 4 Mine, one of four deep shaft mines presently under development, is located approximately 50 miles southwest of Birmingham, near Brookwood, Alabama (Figure 1). The coal seams under development are located in the Warrior Coal Field and include both the Blue Creek and Mary Lee Seams, Depth of cover averages 2000 ft. (610 m) with an average total mining height of 8 ft. C2.4 m). [ ] It is generally accepted that the methane content of a particular coal increases as the overburden depth is increased [l] ; experience to date has shown that the gas condition of the No. 4 Mine is no exception to the rule. To further compound the problem, the over- burden depth, coupled with the relatively soft nature of the Blue Creek coal, has resulted in an initial layout based upon 150 x 150 ft (45.7 x 45.7 m) centers. Considering the above-mentioned mining conditions, the means and the effectiveness of the face ventilation system becomes paramount where productivity is concerned.

Design of structures in rock based on ultimate limit states or strength criteria is unrealistic. The fracture process which inevitably occurs in rock around an underground structure is an energy release phenomenon. The development of fractures and associated displacements around a structure may therefore be more logically described using strain energy concepts and design may sensibly be based on serviceability limit states.

A century of experience with mechanical excavation machines is beginning to pay dividends to the mining industry. Mining is moving from mechanical excavators to mechanical miners. These mechanical mining systems are poised to make a significant impact on hard-rock mining, both underground and surface. Mechanical mining machines have had a long and successful career in coal and evaporites ("soft-rock") mining. Unlike most mechanical hard-rock mining, these systems actually mine ore. For example, the most productive underground method has been, arguably, longwall mining. Mechanical excavation machines are mostly used in civil tunneling or in driving mine openings such as vent shafts. Civil tunneling is a notable mechanical excavation success. Even with its high capital cost, a tunnel boring machine (TBM) can drive kilometers (miles) of tunnel at very low cost. In hard-rock mining, mechanical excavators bore tunnels, raises and shaft openings in the mine, but rarely mine ore. Like the soft-rock miners, their contribution to mining is important and their development must continue. Generally, they are used as excavators not miners. Current trends guarantee development of true general-purpose hard rock mechanical mining machines. Mechanical miners will become a complete mining system and will determine the design of the mine. Mechanical methods will reward the operator with lower costs and high productivity.

It is important to realize that lending institutions have a very different risk-profile from that of an equity investor. For bank financing, a feasibility study must address the concerns of the lender and these can be summarized under the four 'PI Is: Project, Performance, Product and People. Generally, feasibility studies focus on the measurable project risks associated with a new venture, but frequently insufficient emphasis is placed on key risk areas such as ore grade and metallurgical recovery. Before accepting full or even partial non-recourse risk, financial institutions will demand evidence that the project was constructed according to specifications and within budget and that its Performance within agreed limits has been demonstrated. Product risk should be discussed in detail in any feasibility study. For industrial minerals, penetration of the market can be critical to success and for commodities with volatile prices, the sensitivity of the cash flow to a range of prices should be carried out. Methods of reducing price risk such as long term contracts or, in the case of gold, forward selling should be carefully evaluated. The People risk is rarely discussed in feasibility studies, but can be a key element. Few projects turn out to be faithful copies of the study and the ability of the operator to identify

In recent years, diminishing supplies of high grade ores and increasing consumption of mineral and metal products have demanded high efficiencies in extraction processes. The rising cost of energy has influenced plant operating policies. Rather than merely processing as much ore as possible, other process factors are being considered in process analysis, with energy consumed per ton of product produced taking on increased importance. Alternate processes and more efficient plant design may satisfy part of the demand placed on the mineral processing industries. However it is expected that the improvement of existing operatives will be responsible for most of the gains in efficiency in the short term. Even slight improvements in process efficiency lead to significant cost saving. Grinding, for example, is an inherently energy-intensive process. Grinding circuit capital and operating costs are high and it is essential that circuits run as efficiently as possible. In flotation plants, low-grade ores demand optimum recovery of valuables to maintain overall metallurgical efficiency. The use of modern data, treatment methods and systems analysis provide the means to achieve many goals, previously beyond reach. The design of more efficient plants and the evaluation and. improvement of existing plant operations constitute the general area of process analysis. Process analysis can be used to identify the capacity available in a process unit in some cases. In other cases, the goal may be to investigate alternative equipment configurations for an existing plant for possible improvement in efficiency. This goal is virtually impossible to achieve using plant data alone. A simulator of the process units involved can provide an excellent basis for performing the required process analysis.

The use of rock simulators in rock mechanics research greatly expands the scope of the problems that can be investigated with physical models. However, the exact reproduction of full scale conditions, or absolute simulitude, is not obtainable on a small scale model. For this to be possible, the scales of length, time, and pressure (or mass) must be changed without altering the theoretical equations that describe the behavior of materials concerned. In using rock simulants for physical modeling of structures designed in rock, the geometry of full scale structure is reduced to a size suitable for the available testing machine. This will require the strength related properties to be scaled down. Simulation should be representative of the in situ conditions. Complete simulation will require that friction parameters and the stress ratios be matched exactly between prototype and model. The procedure involved in application of physical modeling for rock mechanics research is discussed in the following pages. Background, theoretical approach, and anticipated benefits to the research community are also elaborated.

This paper considers mining ventures occurring in rural communities in Galicia, Spain and Western Australia, Australia. It compares and contrasts the communities where mining is taking precedence over other industries, examining the potential land use conflicts and the future of both the communities and the mines currently operating there. The Galician case study, Trevinca, is located 200 km inland and was once a primary producing area, notable for its scenic alpine landscapes, which have since been developed for small scale tourism purposes. The Australian case study, Boddington is located 100 km inland in what has been a highly productive farming area. Mining was a marginal industry in the case study areas but due to the comparative devaluing of agriculture and tourism and the increased value of mining outputs, mining has increased in scale and economic importance. This paper will consider the environmental, social and economic impacts that have occurred in both the case study localities. Where there have been land use conflicts, strategies for minimising the adverse outcomes will be considered.
