The mining industry is constantly in a state of flux -boom or bust; mine openings and closings. Part of the reason is the nature of ore deposits -they are there or they are not. Once they are mined, they are reclaimed and the move is on to the next deposit. Risks are usually high, and payoffs can be great or not so great. Many factors go into making a property payoff, and mining companies are continually searching for ways to remain profitable as long as possible. Computers and the people who can make them work are one of the ways available to improve productivity and ensure this happens. Computers have been used in the mining industry for the last 30 years (and more in a few cases). During the past 10 years, the explosion of micro-computing has changed how many mining companies do their work.

Direct Production Costs for Solar Sa 1t approximate the trucking cost for 160 Km. Operations near markets appear unusually attractive at first look. However, many desert operations have been plagued by dust storms yielding salt too high in insolubles for most uses. This paper relates the history of a successful operation in a dust storm area. Saturated brine from the solution mining of LPG storage caverns is evaporated in solar ponds yielding 99.95% sodium chloride (dry basis). Purchased energy is one-eighth that of vacuum pan operations. Production scale tests have proved it works at another desert location using a more complex brine. A new approach for refining soluble salts at ambient temperatures is demonstrated by bench scale and pilot work. Again, savings in purchased energy exceed 80%, even when temperatures are raised to reduce refining time.

The Organic Act of 1910 established the Bureau of Mines and gave it authority and responsibility for conducting research on separation, recovery, and recycling of waste products and scrap generated by the mineral and metals industries and the consuming public.(1)1 It was apparent to our Nation's leaders even then that mineral resources, once mined, are irreplaceable and that the development of methods for recycling the values contained in wastes would be required to solve the problem of even¬tual scarcity, Estimates of the increase in per capita consumption of mineral resources in this country indicate that the consumption of metals, minerals, and fossil fuels by 1980 will be double that consumed in 1970 (2). The United States can expect to meet its future mineral needs in three basic ways: the first is through increased production of primary raw minerals; second by increasing imports from foreign sources; and third by recycling secondary materials and metals that were formerly discarded as waste. "Slope performance monitoring, dependable operational practices and ongoing collection of geologic data in openpit slopes all provide valuable information for quantifying potential steepening of subsequent slopes. Mining at the Goldstrike openpit has been ongoing since the early 1980s, having its share of slope instabilities. In areas where slopes have remained stable, consideration has been made for potential slope steepening of final walls.While technology can be efficient, interesting for collecting needed data, slope design fundamentals based on that data can be applied to create much added value.With the proper available equipment, steepening of bench face angles via presplit blasting is not an uncommon method for steepening of interramp slope angles. As an alternative at Goldstrike, the commonly used Modified Ritchie Criteria for empirical catch bench width has been adjusted, resulting in quantified, rock-specific formulas for bench width and rock fall berm placement. The result is an inter-ramp slope angle increase of 2° on a 305- m (1,000-ft) high slope, without the necessary purchases and procedural changes that would be required for presplit drilling and blasting. The result has shown significant net benefits through reduction in mined waste tons and an increase in gold reserves.LocationThe Goldstrike openpit is located in the Great Basin, on the northern end of the Carlin Trend gold belt in northeastern Nevada (Fig. 1). "Mine water generated from underground coal mining operations contains both dissolved and particulate solids. Dissolved solids primarily consist of sodium, calcium, magnesium, potassium, chlorides and sulfates. When discharged to a receiving stream without treatment, these constituents create a potentially toxic environment for aquatic life. A case study is presented to discuss how a centralized treatment plant treats mine water from six locations to meet discharge limitations for chlorides. Located in West Virginia, this facility consistently achieves less than the NPDES permit limitation of 218 mg/L chlorides in the discharge while generating almost zero liquid waste. The dissolved solids concentration in the influent ranges between 5,000 and 10,000 mg/L, with chloride concentrations of 1,000 to 2,000 mg/L and sulfate concentrations of 2,000 to 6,000 mg/L. The mine water is treated using advanced treatment technology to produce clean water for discharge or reuse. The treatment process comprises aeration, softening, filtration, reverse osmosis, RO reject softening, evaporation, crystallization, final effluent remineralization and sludge dewatering. The solid waste generated in the treatment process is landfilled on site. The leachate is sent back to the facility’s thermal treatment process. Because no liquid waste leaves the property, this plant is termed a “Zero Liquid Waste” (ZLW) facility. INTRODUCTION The advanced water treatment system was built to meet a new 218 mg/l regulatory limitation imposed by the West Virginia Department of Environmental Protection for chlorides discharged to surface waters. The system is designed to treat a maximum flow of approximately 5 million gallons per day (795 m3/h) of mine water. The treatment process utilizes reverse osmosis (RO) membrane treatment to achieve the effluent criteria, and evaporation and crystallization technology to manage the RO concentrate from the water treatment process. As a result, the system produces clean water for discharge while generating zero liquid waste. The effluent water can be used for industrial purposes or discharged to a receiving stream. A Water Impact Index (WIIx) study indicated that discharge of this high-quality water into the Monongahela River watershed may improve the water quality for downstream water users. The waste produced in the treatment process, including softening sludge and salt, is disposed of in an on-site landfill."

Flotation columns have been readily accepted for use in most sulfide flotation plants: however, recently columns are being used in many other areas. Recent improvements in design methodologies have overcome many operating problems and led to improvements in metallurgy. In addition. Physical improvements in column design have simplified their operation while leading to better control. The Turbo-Air External Bubble Generator has provided a method for bubble size control and variation in air holdup and carrying capacity. These have enabled commercial operations to improve grades and recoveries by optimizing performance.

The San Manuel Oxide Pit is located within the subsidence boundaries of Magma Copper Company's block caving operation. Ground conditions offer a constant blasting challenge and vary from hard, competent crystalline rock to widely spaced fracturing in a sedimentary conglomerate. A successful drilling and blasting program has undergone several changes since mining commenced in 1985 and continues to be developed. This paper discusses the site specific progress made with the drilling and blasting program from selection of feasibility parameters to current practice. Topics discussed include controlled blasting, use Of high energy blasting agents, charge decking, blast casting, as well as standard drill and blast techniques.

The Navajo Mine is exclusively a multiple seam surface coal mine located in the northwest corner of New Mexico, and entirely on the Navajo Indian Reservation (Figure 1). It is owned and operated by the Broken Hill Propriety Co., Ltd. of Melbourne, Australia. The mine began production in January 1963 with a long term fuel supply agreement with the Four Corners Power Plant. The 2175 MW nominal generating capacity of the Four Corners Power Plant consumes 8-8.5 mm tons of coal annually. With estimated reserves totaling 1.1 billion tons of strippable coal, only one third is presently committed to the generating station. As development has continued over the years, mining operations have advanced into more complex geologic areas to satisfy the utilities demand for coal.

In situ mining is emerging as a potential alternative to conventional surf ace and underground mining techniques. A major factor in determining recoveries by in situ mining is the proportion of ore minerals that can be contacted and solubilized by the leach solutions. To provide basic information on the processes occurring during in situ leaching, particularly at the microscopic scale, the Bureau of Mines has developed a geologic characterization research program. This includes laboratory experiments using leaching apparatus that can accommodate whole core samples. Whole core experiments result in higher leach solution-ore mineral contact ratios than packed column experiments, and also allow for the assessment of permeability changes taking place as the result of mineral dissolution, precipitation, and clay swelling within the flow channels in the rock. A nonreactive, reusable reaction cell has been designed and tested. The leaching apparatus can be used for constant-pressure or constant-flow experiments and allows for the control of flow rate, pressure, and temperature during the experiments, thus permitting studies on a wide variety of ore samples. Details of the experimental apparatus and design are presented, as well as preliminary results from the first series of experiments on an oxide copper ore from the Casa Grande, AZ, area.

The two types of dryers used in the drying of copper concentrates are the rotary dryer and the spray dryer. The rotary dryer has until recent history been the traditional drying method used, Although spray dryers have been used in the chemical field for many years it is only recently that they have been accepted for drying of copper concentrates. The comparison made here will apply in a narrower sense to the drying of copper concentrates as fed into the reverbatory furnaces of the Smelter. To compare a rotary dryer and a spray dryer, which are two totally different methods and pieces of equipment, it is best to view them as systems each made up of certain elements

"Respirable dust in underground coal mines has long been associated with lung diseases, and regular dust sampling is required for assessing occupational exposures. At present, respirable dust concentration and crystalline silica content are commonly determined, but considering recent and yet unexplained increases in the incidence of lung disease amongst miners in specific geographic regions, more information about specific dust characteristics is urgently needed. While particle-level dust analysis is ideal, it is impractical for large numbers of dust samples because it is both time and cost intensive. Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), however, is an alternative option, which offers the ability to determine the total coal to mineral mass ratio in a dust sample – analogous to proximate analysis of bulk coal samples for determining ash content. Here, preliminary development of a TGA method for this purpose is presented. The method is being developed to evaluate dust collected on mixed cellulose ester (MCE) filters using approved permissible sampling equipment. INTRODUCTION Based on the particle size, airborne mine dust can be classified in three categories: inhalable dust (< 100 µm in size), thoracic dust (< 25 µm in size), and respirable dust (< 5 µm in size) (Ramani et al., 2003). The World Health Organization (WHO, 1999) defines inhalable dust particles as those which can be breathed into the nose and mouth, and thoracic dust particles as those which can penetrate airways of the head and enter the airways of the lung. On the other hand, respirable dust particles can penetrate beyond the terminal bronchioles into the gas-exchange regions (alveoli) of the lungs (WHO, 1999). Hlavay (1992) reported that the seriousness of the damage in the lungs and respiratory tract is based on amount of dust remaining in these organs, and the amount of dust depends on the extent of dust exposure, the size distribution of the dust particles, and the capability of the body for dust elimination. Inhalation of respirable coal dust by miners can cause a disabling and potentially fatal lung disease which is called coal worker’s pneumoconiosis (CWP). Silicosis is another fatal lung disease caused by inhalation of respirable silica dust. In CWP and silicosis, dust particles deposit in the lungs, damage the lung tissue, and ultimately cause scarring which cannot be reversed (Colinet, 2010). While overall incidence occupation-related lung disease amongst coal miners in the US has been declining for over 40 years, it appears that there has been a recent increase in specific locations in Central Appalachia (CDC, 2006; Pollock et al. 2010; Suarthana et al., 2011). Although this trend is yet unexplained, one theory is that particular dust characteristics in these locations may be a factor (Hassan and Lau; Page & Oraniscak 2002). For example, several studies have indicated that different coals may generate different amounts of respirable dust (e.g., see Page, 1993 and Litton and Page, 1994), and the surrounding geology may also play a role in terms of the types of dust particles generated. Although respirable dust concentration and crystalline silica content are commonly determined as part of regulatory compliance sampling, more information about specific dust characteristics (e.g., size, shape and composition) is urgently needed."

A new radioactive tracer method to measure airflow in inaccessible airways has been developed for situations when studies of the mine ventilation system are not possible using conventional flowmeters (anemometers). The new method has been tested in the ventilation laboratory at the University of Kentucky and in the Experimental Underground Coal Mine at the U.S. Bureau of Mines. This new tracer method has been utilized in leakage, dilution and flow velocity measurements in laboratory and field (mine) experiments.

This paper presents a 20-year global account of tunneling in gassy ground demonstrating high probability of schedule delays, cost overruns, worker injuries and fatalities. Causes of these failures are systemic. Gas is seldom characterized in terms relevant to design of effective ventilation systems. Control measures deployed in tunnels are often based on outdated industrial safety codes. A change in approach is needed. This paper describes how to perform a desk study to determine if field investigation for gas is warranted, and lists the content of an effective characterization of gas in a geotechnical report.

The formation of scale is common in gold ore processing plants. A working definition of scale, applicable to the various scaling conditions found in gold ore processing plants, would be: "a hard, tightly adhering deposit formed in place by the precipitation of calcium-bearing mineral compounds from water". The most common scale found in gold processing plants is calcium carbonate (CaCO3) although calcium sulfate (CaSO4) is occasionally a problem.

The issue of miner safety in case of an underground mine fire has been extensively examined by both government and industry. These efforts have intensified in recent years following a number of fatal fires at underground coal mines. As a result, there is an increasing interest in the reliability of coal mine escapeways during a mine fire. This paper discusses the use of fault tree analysis for evaluating escapeway reliability. A fault tree is developed using standard logic formulations. It is later evaluated using commercially available software. The computer model uses Boolean reduction to obtain the minimal cut sets and minimal path sets of the tree. A brief analysis is also conducted to determine the occurrence probability of the TOP event. This study shows that fault tree analysis is a viable means of analyzing escapeway reliability. The cut and path sets reveal those event sequences leading to fatalities. Such information is useful in safety training and accident prevention. The probability of the TOP event shows the frequency of occurrence for fatalities in an underground mine fire. The usefulness of this value, however, is limited by the accuracy of the data for the initiating events. For mining events, the data is difficult to estimate precisely.

The Kubota surface melting system has been under development since 1975. It has found commercial application on the melting of municipal sludge, and ash from solid waste. The melted product has physical properties allowing its use as a substitute for aggregate in cement and asphaltic construction. The Star-Morning mine is a. 1000-ton-per-day lead-zinc producer located in the easterly part of the Coeur d&apos;Alene Mining District of North Idaho. The property includes both the Star and Morning mines which are located on the westerly and easterly portions of the same complex of veins. The mine is 70% owned by the Bunker Hill Company (Gulf Resources, Inc.) of Kellogg, Idaho, 30% owned by Hecla Mining Company, and operated by Hecla Mining Company with head-quarters in Wallace, Idaho. One of the characteristics of mines in the Coeur d&apos;Alene District is that many of the ore bodies extend to very great depths. The Star is no exception, but rather a leading example. The complex of near vertical veins and ore shoots extend some 7000 feet below the surface at present, with a maximum strike length of about 4000 feet. Ore has been mined on 20 separate veins and ore structures. More than 50 miles of headings have been driven and nearly 23 million tons of ore mined since the Morning mine started in.189S. The problems of mining at such depths are formidable temperature on the bottom level is 1100 F and high humidity problem. Pressure from the sheer weight of rock is as high foot. This paper will deal with providing a new access to the deeper levels of the mine and the installation of a hoist and related items to service these levels. By the time development had reached the 7100 level (Figure 1), it became apparent that a different &apos;hoisting system was going to be necessary if we were going to continue to mine at a profit. The main shaft extended to the 4000 level at which point a ?:3100"&apos;foot winze shaft provided access to the 7100 level. The two hoists were limited to handling 3-ton payloads at 1200 to 1500 feet per minute. Some ores are still produced from above the 4000 level but as these ore reserves become depleted the hoisting of the desired tonnage (1000+/day-) from the lower levels of the mine would exceed the capacity of the existing hoisting system. A decision was made to sink a new vertical shaft at a point well in the south wall of the ore bodies where strong rocks and a minimum of faulting was expected and to purchase and install a new hoist capable of hoisting over 7000 feet. This new&apos; shaft, designated as the No. 4 Shaft, was planned to reach 2000 feet below the 7100 level which was the deepest level at that time. The hoist would be in-stalled on the ,main 2000 Adit level which is used as an access and haulage level to the concentrator and surface plant in Burke.

Cable shovels are used for primary excavation in in-situ and/or pre-fragmented formations in surface mining operations. Poorly fragmented hard rock formations and random occurrence of hard boulders in soft formations cause extreme variability of material diggability, resulting in varying shovel stress loading. The stress loading of a shovel’s front-end assembly could result in fatigue failure. Conventional design process, which uses physical shovel simulation studies, is very costly and time consuming for achieving statistically significant results. In this paper, rigid and flexible multi-body dynamic theories are used to develop component stress loading and deformation models of the cable shovel, and solved in the ADAMS/NASTRAN/FLEX environments. Detailed simulation experiments are carried out to examine the performance, reliability, durability and efficiency of the P&H 4100A under varying in-situ formation conditions. The results show areas of high stress fields with a maximum stress of 313.31 MPa at node 441 within the hoist rope. The reliability of the results is confirmed by comparing existing test data. The study is significant because it provides a solid foundation for further study of failure life analysis of the cable shovel components.
