INTRODUCTION The radon problem concerns the radiation exposure from inhaled short-lived radon daughters and the associated risk for the induction or promotion of lung cancer. In several groups of miners which were exposed in the past to relative high radon levels during their underground work, an excess lung cancer frequency has been observed. On the basis of these findings it has to be stated that the inhalation of radon daughters is the most important radiation hazard in mining. Involved in this radon problem in mines are the difficulties to measure the individual radon daughter exposure of miners and to estimate the dose to critical cells and target tissues in the lung from inhaled radon daughters. And finally the reduction of radon levels in mines confronts us with special technical problems which are difficult to solve. Thus the setting of annual limits for the radon daughter exposure of miners alone is not sufficient to guarantee an appropriate standard of radiation safety. Of same importance are the improvement of air monitoring and the optimization of technical protection measures in mines. This has to be kept in mind for the following considerations on exposure limits. The ICRP has recommended in 1959 for the first time a maximum permissible concentration (MPC) for the occupational exposure to radon and its short-lived daughters (ICRP, 1959). This MPC in air was derived from a maximum permissible dose equivalent of 0.15 Sv (15 rem) per year to the epithelium of the large bronchi which was regarded as the "critical tissue". This old MPC-value was derived using a simplified lung model which paid main attention to the dose contribution from the inhalation of unattached 218Po(RaA) atoms. Since this time more realistic dosimetric models for radon daughters have been developed; some of these models will be presented in special papers on this conference. Furthermore in the last 10 - 20 years substantial epidemiological information on the lung cancer risk among several groups of Rn-exposed miners has become available. Taking into account these epidemiological and new dosimetric findings the ICRP has adopted in March this year new recommendations on occupational limits for inhalation of 222Rn, 22ORn and theirshort-lived daughters. This report will be published this year as ICRP Publication 32 (ICRP 1981). The recommended limits for radon daughters were derived from the basic dose and risk limits as they were proposed by ICRP in its new basic recommendations (ICRP Publ. 26, 1977). In the following this basic system of dose limitation is shortly outlined before the special recommendations for radon daughters are described. [BASIC CONCEPTS AND LIMITS] The new basic recommendation of ICRP (Publ. 26, 1977) proceed from the assumption that in the dose range which is relevant for radiation protection, the risk RT of so-called stochastic radiation effects (carcinogenic and genetic effects) in a target tissue T increases proportionally with the mean dose equivalent HT in this tissue: RT = aT HT. If several target tissues are irradiated the total individual (stochastic) risk is given by the sum of risks in these tissues: [R = ?TRT = ? T aT HT]. Thus this concept of individual health detriment takes into account the risk contribution from each relevant tissue. It replaces the old concept of the critical tissue, which neglected the exposure of other tissues. Applying this new concept a dose quantity can be defined which is proportional to the total individual radiation risk from stochastic effects. This so-called "effective dose equivalent (HE)" is given by the sum of the weighted dose equivalents in the relevant tissues: [HE = E wT HT with E wT = 1 T '1] The weighting factor wT of each tissues follows to wT = aT/awB, where awB is the total stochastic risk coefficient for a uniform irradiation of the whole body. For the lung as a single organ comprising several target tissues, the ICRP recommends a total weighting factor w = 0.12 (ICRP 1977/79). This concept of risk or detriment, respectively, has important consequences. To meet the objectives of radiation protection the new ICRP-system of dose limitation is based on the following three principles: 1) The justification of practices involving radiation exposures; no pratice shall be adopted unless it produces a net benefit. 2) The ALARA-principle that all exposures shall be kept as low as reasonably achievable; this requires the optimization of the level of protection. 3) The limitation of individual exposure (annual dose limits). It is important to note that the dose limits for individuals are only one part of this system of dose limitation. Furthermore, these limits cannot be regarded as a boundary between safe and unsafe. They have to be interpreted as the lower boundary of an unacceptable exposure region. This means that in addition to the observance of these basic dose limits it is demanded to optimize the level of protection. Increasing conveyor capacity and reliability is a common goal for many underground mines. This task is especially challenging when you must work with existing structure, belt, etc. Meeting this challenge, The Pittsburgh & Midway Coal Mining Co. North River Mine switched from constant fill to actively controlled fluid couplings, realizing a capacity increase from 2,100 tons per hour (2,300 stph) to 2,550 tons per hour (2,800 stph), with improved reliability. This paper will present a case study of The Pittsburgh & Midway Coal Mining Co.'s North River Mine underground conveyor haulage system. These conveyors included the main line conveyors as well as a tension controlled tripper booster panel conveyor. Characteristics and performance of the coupling and control system will be illustrated, demonstrating the systems controllability, simplicity, and dependability.

Mine ventilation, requires electricity to operate the fans and fossil fuel for heating. Typically, this accounts for approximately 40% of the overall underground energy consumption. This is considerable, and one of the major causes of this expense is that most mine ventilation systems are designed for the "worst-case-scenario" with respect to ventilation demand, which is commonly dictated by diesel equipment usage. Once designed, mines tend to operate their ventilation system at this peak level despite their exceeding day-to-day development and production needs due to lack of appropriate ventilation controls. In underground metal mines, TeleminingTM, which includes the tele-remote operation of mobile development and production equipment from surface, will change the mine design criteria including its support infrastructure such as the ventilation system. With the removal of machine operators to surface control rooms, conventional ventilation systems designed to dilute and remove pollutants can become redundant. Depending on the ultimate need for ventilation, its cost in automated mines with tele-remote equipment operated from surface will be lower than the cost of ventilation in conventional mines. These cost savings, which could be significant, would not only come from the ability to reduce the amount of ventilation in the mine, but also through the capacity to automate its distribution. This paper provides an indication of the new airflow requirements in stopes and dead-end developments for the tele-remote and automated mining processes based on climatic modelling. Furthermore, this paper makes a cost benefit analysis by comparing the ventilation system operating cost of a conventional underground metal mine based on the mobile diesel powered equipment design criteria with the newly redesigned ventilation system operating cost of an automated mine based on the "heat management" design criteria.

The effect of discontinuities on the fracturing and mechanical behavior of shale has been extensively investigated on a laboratory scale in previous works. It is well agreed that the lamination properties, including discontinuity and lamina properties, affect the behavior of shale. However, it is still unclear how the lamination properties are affecting the stability of the shale roof in an underground coal mine entry. This paper investigated the effect of lamination properties using the discrete element method on a mine-scale entry model as an extension to the previous work conducted on laboratory scale models.

Microscopic evaluation of trace quantities of metalliferous phases in flotation products requires counting large numbers of particles. Particle counts of many thousands may be required for precision, but not obtained practically by conventional microscopic techniques. A less tedious microscopic method for evaluating trace sulfides in mill tailings was developed for the O'okiep Mining Company in South Africa. Hundreds of thousands of particles were evaluated by this method called "gross-counting." Gross-counting consists of counting microscopic fields rather than point-counting individual particles. Total counts are calculated by multiplying the average number of particles per field by the total number of fields examined over the entire mount. Total gross-counts range from about 20,000 particles for +200 to 100,000 or more for -400 mesh size material in lucite mounts. Sulfides and metallic particles in each field are identified and tallied along with field counts. Totals for each type of metallic particle are divided by the total gross-count to give volume percent which is corrected to weight percent by specific gravity factors.

The removal of gangue minerals from three different graphite ores (Inebolu, Akdag?madeni and Çoraklidere) from Turkey by acid leaching was studied. Acid leaching experiments were applied to the flotation bulk concentrates, which were obtained in determined optimum conditions after preliminary flotation tests. The effects of acid type, acid concentration, leaching temperature and leaching time on the dissolution of gangue minerals were studied. The most suitable leaching conditions were determined to be 20% HCl + 4% HF for acid type and concentration, 85 ºC for leaching temperature and 4 hours for leaching time. After removing the gangue minerals at these optimum conditions, the total carbon contents of the samples from Inebolu, Akdag?madeni and Çoraklidere increased from 23.51% to 40.07%, from 37.93 to 60.47% and from 42.28 to 59.47%, respectively.

The aim of this paper is to describe and analyze the ground treatment performed between January and May 2002 in order to increase safety during excavation and reduce instability problems along 180 m of tunnel, during the construction works associated with line 10 extension to the Madrid Metro. The tunnel was excavated using the traditional Madrid Method and in the section considered in this paper layers of sand were detected around the tunnel crown area with a significant presence of water, the in?ow of which needed to be controlled with a minimum impact on the surrounding environment.

The Yankee Gulch sodium minerals project (YGP) is a solution mining project operated by American Soda. The mine operates on a federal lease administered by the U.S. Bureau of Land Management (BLM). Commercial operations began in November2000. In 1964, Irv Nielsen discovered nahcolite mineralization where the YGP pilot plant is now located near the Piceance Creek in Rio Blanco County, Colorado (Nielsen, 1969).Development of the project accelerated after Williams Corp., of Tulsa, OK, joined with American Alkali in1996 to form American Soda. Pilot testing by American Soda led to commercial permitting, plant design, construction and startup. Figure 1 shows the location of the Yankee Gulch leases and the location of the upper and lower plant sites.

Fluorapatite is an important constituent of the greater part of the basic and ultra-basic rock members of the Complex. The evidence for and role of primary magmatic processes in the development of concentric zones of dunite, pyroxenite, syenite and carbonatite and its consequent bearing on the distribution of apatite are discussed. The presence of at least two generations of each of the latter three rock types indicates the cyclical nature of magmatic activity. Pegmatitic-metasomatic phases corresponding to the major magmatic cycles resulted in emplacement of pegmatoidal assemblages. The abundance of apatite in the pegmatoid can be traced to the composition of its parent magma and its cooling history. Approximately 2.5 million tonnes of phosphate concentrate are produced annually from ores containing from 10 percent to 25 percent apatite.

With the advent of faster micro-processors, the use of numerical methods to simulate complex fluid dynamic phenomena in three dimensions for use in design has become prevalent in the automotive, and turbo-machinery industries. The Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) method divides the region of interest into small control volumes which form the mesh representing the physical characteristics of the problem, and uses the finite volume method to intergrate the equations for the conservation of mass, momentum, energy and species over each control volume. Recent developments in CFD software expedite mesh generation, and enable the use of unstructured grids, comprised of tetrahedral volumes in three dimensions and triangular areas in two. CFD more accurately represents complex geometries and allows for relative movement of meshes enabling simulation of multiple moving bodies. 'ibis paper presents two examples of how CFD simulation can be used to assess mine and tunnel ventilation problems formerly addressed by application of analytical solutions which were developed assuming ideal incompressible conditions. CFD simulation is used to evaluate the impact of varying the airflow in a descentionally ventilated airway on the layering along the roof of smoke and hot gases resulting from a vehicle fire. Control of the smoke layer is required to enable safe egress from the vehicle, particularly if the vehicle is for personnel transport, and to ensure control of the fire contaminants throughout the ventilation system. The airflow required to prevent layering against the ventilation direction, calculated from the Bakke and Leach relations (Bakke and Leach, 1962), is compared with the CFD simulation results. An evaluation of the pressures, generated as a vehicle enters a tunnel portal, using CFD simulation, is also presented for unflared and flared portal configurations. These simulation results are compared with predictions derived using an analytical method which assumes one-dimensional and incompressible flow. Results of the CFD simulation are presented in an animated video format. SIMULATION OF BACKLAYERING In designing a ventilation system for a transit tunnel, the ability of the ventilating air to control and prevent backlayering of smoke and hot gases resulting from a vehicle fire is of prime concern. The buoyant nature of hot smoke causes it to rise relative to the colder, fresh air provided by the ventilation system. If the vehicle fire occurs in a descentionally ventilated tunnel, the smoke may tend to move upgrade in a layer above the incoming ventilation airflow. The layer may become thick enough to engulf a substatntial part of the tunnel cross-section upgrade of the incident that comprises the evacuation route. This effect is termed "backlayering' and it is similar to the development of methane layers in mines for which most studies related to backlayering have been done. Prediction Techniques Analytical A number of studies have been conducted (Bakke and Leach, 1962) to define the characteristics of this phenomena and as a result have produced relations which are used both in the mine and transit ventilation fields to define the air velocities required to control layering. In the transit industry the air velocity required to prevent the backlayering phenomena from occuring during a vehicle fire is called the "critical velocity" (Associated Engineers, 1975) and is dependent upon a number of factors: tunnel height, cross-sectional area and grade; ambient air temperature and density; and the heat release rate of the fire. Common practice in transit ventilation design is to provide an airflow which meets or exceeds the critical velocity. In order to determine whether or not the critical velocity can be achieved with a particular ventilation system, a one-dimensional simulation of the tunnel network is typically performed using programs such as the Subway Environment Simulation program (SES) originally developed in the late 1970's (Associated Engineers, 1980). The results obtained from SES are compared to the critical velocity to determine the adequacy of the ventilation system. Computational Fluid Dynamics For the backlayering simulations, a commercial CFD code which has been used successfully in a wide variety of engineering applications, was used. It provides numerous options for modeling laminar and turbulent flows, multiple turbulence models, definition of multiple species and chemical reactions between them, a variety of boundary conditions (including constant pressure and constant velocity inlets) and the ability to apply user-defined FORTRAN subroutines. It includes the ability to model conductive, convective, and radiative heat transfer. FLUENT also permits the use of "body-fitted coordinates" to match the computational mesh or grid to complex real-world geometries. Computational Fluid Dynamics Model The model developed to simulate the backlayering phenomena is comprised of an airway of rectangular cross-section, 4 meters wide, 4.5 meters high, and 200 meters long. The upgrading project for two hydropower plants in Slovenia, Europe, requires two new pressure tunnels: Plave II (5.9 km Flysch) and Doblar II (3.6 km Limestone). It is the worldwide largest application of the Double-Shield TBM technology combined with an extremely thin-walled monoshell honeycomb lining system. The first drive has been completed by end of June 2000 achieving best performances of 50m/d and almost 1,100m/mth. In September 2000 the TBM started the second tunnel without any required adjustments due to geological or other reasons. Another 52m/d have been bored already within one production day of two 8 h shifts achieving a maximum penetration rate of more than 6m/h. The completion of the Doblar drive can be expected by February 2001.

Geostatistical estimation techniques were customized to enable forecast of production figures at the Silver Bell uranium mine (Uravan District). Surface drill hole data were used to provide a block model of kriged estimators of average uranium grades. The recoverable figures, such as ore-waste ratio and ore grade, are then deduced from regressive curves previously obtained from underground information and production data. Cross-validations of the entire model were performed and were found positive.

A closed grinding circuit, typified by a ball mill-cyclone combination, is often required to treat a feed comprised of a variety of minerals of differing properties. Usually, the individual behaviour of the minerals is not assessed, a procedure which requires sizing and metal or mineralogical assaying of each size fraction. Further, sizing is frequently by screening to perhaps 325 mesh meaning that detail on the important -44 um fraction is unavailable. It is well appreciated that minerals can exhibit both individual classifying and grinding behaviour. Recognizing that cyclone classification results from differential centrifugal settling and acceleration rates, then minerals of differing specific gravity will exhibit individual mineral cyclone performance curves. If the minerals have differing grindabilities, then individual mineral rates of breakage may be expected. When treating an ore containing minerals of a range in specific gravity and/or grindability, individual mineral behaviour in the closed-circuit grind could be notable and perhaps important to the overall concentrator performance. An example is a lead-zinc ore, as shown by Kelsall et al.(1,2) This paper describes the individual mineral cyclone performance curves at sizes down to ti 10 um for the four major minerals at two lead-zinc concentrators; the Sullivan concentrator at Kimberley, British Columbia, and the Pine Point Mines concentrator at Pine Point, North West Territories, both operated by Cominco Ltd. In addition, individual mineral grinding behaviour for the four major minerals at the Sullivan concentrator is presented.

Silver-bearing, bulk sulfide concentrates from several Peruvian mines were autoclaved in a l9-L (5gal) laboratory autoclave in Lima, Peru. Cyanidation of autoclaved concentrates, following a hot lime jarosite destruction step, extracted more than 98% of the silver and more than 95% of the gold. Autoclave operating parameters, such as time, temperature, pulp density and autoclaved solids recycle, were investigated and reaction rates determined. The problems of excessive heat generation, silver solubility during autoclaving and formation of pellets containing unreacted sulfides were addressed. The data presented will be used to design a continuous autoclave pilot plant to provide reliable scale-up data for a 50 to 100 t/d (55 to 110 stpd) facility.

The 12,710-m (41,720-ft) Riverside Badlands Tunnel is located between the most active faults—San Andreas and San Jacinto—in Southern California. To accomplish the impervious final lining design and to accommodate the effects of earthquake ground motions, a new approach was developed and is prescribed in this paper. Two final lining options, welded steel pipe and prestressed concrete cylinder pipe, are considered for the tunnel, which will be excavated under groundwater and ground conditions from soft rock to hardrock at depths exceeding 244 m (800 ft). The buckling strength, serviceability, and structural integrity under seismic effects and other loads were considered in the design.

Microseismic monitoring and evaluation is one aspect of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) research program. Roof falls are often preceded by a period of elevated microseismic activity, but not all periods of elevated activity result in a roof fall, nor do all roof falls occur after some amount of elevated activity. The objective of this study is to review periods of elevated microseismic activity and determine whether fracture activity rate can be used to anticipate the initiation of roof falls. The study was carried out at an underground limestone mine where major roof falls are associated with excessive horizontal stress. The progression of roof falls was detected by the microseismic signature produced by the rock falling from the mine roof onto the mine floor, which is termed a roof fall impact event. A total of nine elevated fracture activity periods that resulted in seven major roof falls were examined. It was observed that elevated fracture activity preceded the initial roof fall impact event in three out of four major roof falls. The initial impact event was not identified for the remaining three roof falls. Fracture event rates were analyzed and a roof fall alarm trigger of five fracture events in a ten minute time period was established for this test case. The fall alarm trigger was tested against six of the elevated activity periods. Four roof falls occurred in the six periods of elevated activity, and two would have triggered the alarm before the roof fall occurred, while two false alarms were generated. The results show that limited success would have been achieved by the microseismic system as a roof fall alarm trigger. However, the trigger would have been successful at warning of the onset of elevated activity, allowing mine employees to respond appropriately. The study highlighted some issues with implementing such a system in an operating mine, including the need for real time identification of fracture related microseismic signals among mining induced signals, and accurate location and identification of fracture clustering.

Mine fires and/or explosions continue to occur. While these are unusual events, they comprise emergency situations. Whenever one of these events occurs, the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) responds with specially trained teams, mine fire experts, sophisticated scientific instrumentation, and trained instrument operators. In order to analyze mine air samples on-site, because time is of the essence, MSHA has a Mobile Gas Laboratory. The laboratory, which is stored near Pittsburgh, is totally self-contained. Sending air samples to a laboratory would take too long. Mine fire experts need the results of the latest analyses as soon as they are finished. The mobile laboratory is housed in the box of a diesel truck. Benches line both sides of the laboratory. Gas chromatographs are mounted on the benches. There is sufficient bench space for multiple bench top gas chromatographs. These instruments and their controllers are shock and vibration isolated to protect them during transit. The mobile laboratory can operate using on board diesel generators or line power. An uninterrupted power supply (UPS) supplies power to the instruments while switching from generator to line power or visa versa. Therefore, analysis of samples can proceed without interruption if a power failure would occur. In the rear of the mobile laboratory are racks that hold compressed gas cylinders. These cylinders contain carrier gas and compressed air. An air compressor is housed under the laboratory to operate the gas chromatograph actuators. Within several hours after arriving at a mine the instruments have stabilized and have been calibrated. The mobile laboratory is ready to begin analyzing air samples. The mobile laboratory has proved itself at many mine fires and explosions since its purchase.

Reliable ore reserve estimates for deposits with highly skewed grade disributions are difficult tasks to perform. Although some recent geostatistical techniques are available to handle problems with these estimations, ordinary kriging or conventional interpolation methods are still widely used to estimate the ore reserves for such deposits. The estimation results can be very sensitive to the search parameters used during the interpolation of grades with these methods. This paper compares the ore reserve estimates from ordinary kriging using several cases in which certain search parameters are varied. The comparisons are extended to different mineralizations to show the changing effects of these parameters.

Central America is graduating this year into large scale mining with the start up of Inco's multi-million dollar nickel laterite processing plant in Guatemala. In the other extreme of the Isthmus in Panama Texas Gulf Sulphur is doing check diamond drilling and foundation test drilling at the Cerro Colorado copper porphyry. The higher price of gold and silver has spurred development and exploration of several small precious metal mines. The purpose of this presentation is to make a brief resumé of the most important mines operating in the area and a list of significant exploration projects. Also, tables will be shown to compare mining codes and taxes. Unfortunately these tables lack information on Panama. Before starting I like to express my appreciation to Kennecott Copper who permitted the use of some of the data compiled by the author on their behalf during the year 1975. Other persons which did not want to be named also have my gratitude.

Todays End of Life vehicles are shredded and their metal components recovered and recycled by standard methods. The remaining non-metallic fraction is shredder residue, and contains vast amounts of high value engineering plastics. None are today recovered. Discussed are the developmental approaches used in the first process to recover these valuable plastics. Examined are initial laboratory studies, pilot plant design and construction, product development, results, and flowchart explanations.
