The Environment Weipa is located at 12° south latitude on the west coast of Cape York Peninsula, North Queensland, Australia. The climate is tropical with most of the 1 600 mm. average annual rainfall falling between November and March. During the short winter months (May/ August) the weather is clear and pleasant, with temperatures seldom exceeding 27°C.Throughout the remainder of the year, conditions are frequently oppressive due to consistent high ambient temperatures accompanied by high humidity. The terrain is of low relief, and generally not more than 6 to 10m. above mean sea level adjacent to the coast. The coastline features numerous short estuaries which discharge run-off from the heavy rains collected by creeks and rivers. The whole area is covered by an open forest, the predominant species of which is Eucalyptus tetradonta. These eucalypts have only limited commercial value and are heavily infested with termites. Despite the fact that Weipa is close to the location of the first reported sighting of the Australian coastline by a European (William Janz - 1606), it remains very isolated. There is no developed road or rail connection to centres of population, so that transport of practically all products, personnel and materials to and from Weipa is by sea and air. The 2003 Rapid Excavation and Tunneling Conference (RETC) was held at the New Orleans Marriott, New Orleans, LA, June 15-18. The New Orleans conference was the 16th since the RETC was formed in 1971. This year’s conference was sponsored by the Society for Mining, Metallurgy, and Exploration, Inc.(SME), with co-sponsorship of the Construction Institute of ASCE. Attendance at the meeting was 1,178, a conference record. This was up significantly from the771 attendees at the 2001 meeting in San Diego, CA. The RETC was formed to “advance the engineering and scientific knowledge of rapid underground excavation and tunneling through interdisciplinary meetings, publications, technical-educational exhibitions and encouragement of research.” The RETC conferences are now held every other year. They provide an opportunity for individuals to meet with designers, contractors and manufacturers associated with the tunneling industry to share experiences in all phases of tunnel design and construction.

With the evolving landscape of gold mineral resource development and utilization, the easily treatable gold resources are continuously decreasing, while refractory gold minerals are becoming the most important resources in the field of gold extraction. In these original ores, most of the gold is encapsulated in the lattice of pyrite and arsenopyrite, resulting in difficulty of gold transfer into the solution during the leaching process. The most effective method to solve the problem of insufficient contact between gold particles and leaching reagent is oxidation pretreatment before leaching. Different from traditional high-temperature roasting, concentrated sulfuric acid was used as both an oxidant and leaching agent in a sulfideencapsulated refractory gold ore to decompose the pyrite in the curing environment to expose the gold and improve the leaching efficiency. The experimental results showed that under the conditions of liquid solid ratio 3:1, curing temperature 240 °C and the reaction time 1.5 h, the weight loss rate and iron removal rate of the ore sample reached the highest value of 60.01% and 99.68%, respectively. The main phase of curing residue was Fe2( SO4)3, and silica was nearly the only phase after washing. At the same time, by combining the sodium thiosulfate system gold leaching method, the gold leaching rate increased from 3.67% to 81.30% before and after pretreatment with concentrated sulfuric acid.

"GENERAL PROJECT DATA The Sparvo Tunnel belongs to “Variante di Valico” project, a new 65 km highway link between Bologna and Florence, designed to renew the existing A1 route and to connect in a faster way Bologna and Flor-ence. It is composed of a 2,5 km twin tunnel excavated in a complex geological context, characterized by the presence of a series of surface landslides and methane gas. The gradient is 2.6 % and the minimum radius is 1’400 m. The internal diameter of the precast seg-ment lining, equivalent to the final section of the tunnel, is 13.6 m. MAIN TBM SPECIFICATIONS TBM Earth Pressure Balanced S-574 “Martina”, manufactured by Herrenknecht, has a theoretical excava-tion diameter of 15’615 mm. It is equipped with a conical shield 12.2 m long and four back-up gantries. The total length of the machine is approximately 130 m, weighing approximately 4’500 tons. The total installed power is 16’800 kW. The main drive has a diameter of 8’700 mm and has a triple axis roller type bearing equipped with a labyrinth system including 4 sealing lips. TIME SCHEDULE OF INITIAL TBM DRIVE A time schedule of the initial TBM drive is presented in the following list: •,August 25, 2011: start of the excavation of the 1st drive of the Sparvo tunnel •,October 29,2011: stop of the advance of the TBM for gear oil contamination and clogging •,October 29 to December 20, 2011: repair works on the main drive system and modifications on the conditioning system •,December 20,2011 to July 25, 2012: restart excavation of the 1st drive (north tunnel) and its breakthrough •,July 25 to November 29, 2012: 180° turning of the TBM, detailed check of the main drive seal-ing system and fixing problems on gear boxes, race ring, clamping ring and cutting wheel •,November 29,2012 to July 24, 2013: excavation of the 2nd drive (south tunnel) and its break-through •,August 2013 to July 31, 2014: disassembly of the TBM (first 4 months) and standstill of the jobsite for structural issues on precast concrete lining of the tunnel •,July 31, 2014 to March 10, 2015: inspection, dismantling and packaging of each part of the main drive (flange ring, gear box housing and main bearing). With the increasing demand for minerals and the decline in the quality of ore reserves, technologies to maximize recovery are critical to a mine?s economic success. Many mining waters exhibit the potential to form hardness-based inorganic scales, which inhibit effective mineral recovery. Often, a continuously-fed chemical deposit control program is implemented by the mine site to inhibit these scales. The use of retractable scale coupons is the current industry standard for monitoring these programs; however, a key drawback to their use is the limited, and sometimes untimely amount of information they provide. A proprietary fouling analyzer has been developed that can be used to continuously monitor the formation of inorganic scales in mining process streams. Consequently, it can be used to continually, and more effectively, communicate the efficacy of an antiscalant program, thereby providing the ability to compare different scale control programs and to optimize their feedrates. Case studies presented validate the applicability of this technology to help optimize mineral recovery.

"The Office of Mine Safety and Health Research (NIOSH-OMSHR) currently is leading an effort in the development of the next-generation self-escape apparatus as part of the research imperative directed by the MINER Act of 2006. A multifaceted contract program over the past 3 years delivered key components and base breathing modules to form the basis for developing backpack and vest-style versions of dockable self-contained (closed-circuit) self-escape respirators with hoods (CCMERs). This paper outlines the current status in developing the CCMER that incorporates a docking and switch-over valve (DSOV) for seamless transfer from one breathing device to another, and a hood with an inner mask and speech diaphragm (HMC) for ease of donning, ease of use, and communication ability. Three versions of the CCMER are being pursued, namely: the CCMER-B, which can be worn as a backpack and incorporates the features of a miner’s belt; the CCMER-V, which is worn similar to a miner’s vest and attaches to a miner’s belt; and the CCMER-C, a breathing module cached along the escape route that can be docked to the -B and -V versions. Human factors considerations are a key element in the CCMER design, as it is to be continually worn by the miner while underground, and must be readily accessible for deployment when needed. The CCMERs are designed to be capable of being certified to 42 CFR part 84 standards, including sub-part O for mine use, and to meet MSHA permissibility regulations for use in underground mines. They are sized for sufficient oxygen capacities (Cap 2 and Cap 3 as defined in sub-part O) to yield a duration that is of practical use in a mine escape scenario. INTRODUCTION The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) Office of Mine Safety and Health Research (OMSHR) is leading the development of self-escape apparatuses to provide breathing gas to mining personnel operating in the event of an emergency in various capacities underground in environments containing hazardous gas components. The Mine Improvement and New Emergency Response Act of 2006 (also known as the MINER Act) and input from the mining community called for the need to move Self-Contained Self-Rescuer (SCSR) technology to a next-generation status. In response to this need, NIOSH’s Office of Mine Safety and Health Research (OMSHR) established a strategic plan to develop key components and devices with help from external experts knowledgeable in breathing apparatus designs. The US Navy was identified as a key expert in this field through its extensive experience in diving apparatus and life support systems, and development work commenced through Inter-Agency Agreements with OMSHR. A contracts program was also launched with industry experts specializing in this field. This paper outlines the current status in developing the Next-Generation Closed-Circuit Mine Escape Respirators (CCMERs) that could be used for surviving and escaping from a mine following an emergency that renders the mine atmosphere irrespirable."

The 31st annual American Hall of Fame Awards Banquet and Fundraiser sponsored by the Mining Foundation of the Southwest (MFSW) will be held at the JW Marriott Tucson Starr Pass Resort on Saturday, Dec. 7, 2013. Each year, one living inductee, two Medal of Merit recipients, honorees from mining?s past, an industry partnership award, as well as a special citation, are recognized by the MFSW for their respective contributions to the mining industry. James D. Toole, past president and chief executive officer of Southwest Energy LLC, will be the Hall of Fame inductee, guest of honor, and featured speaker at the awards banquet. Toole founded Southwest Energy LLC in 1973 and is credited with introducing innovative explosive technology, providing even greater value to its mining customers. Medals of Merit will be awarded to Joseph M. Keane, principal metallurgical engineer for SGS Metcon Research/KD Engineering, and Sean D. Dessureault, associate professor at the University of Arizona. Keane is recognized for his metallurgical expertise, especially in design development and pollution abatement. Dessureault is recognized for his advanced mining research, with more than 25 journal publications, and his entrepreneurship as the founder and chief executive officer of two mineral-related companies. To honor mining?s past, the hall of fame will induct Bartolomé de Medina for his invention of the patio process for recovering silver; Ben Williams for his management of the Copper Queen Mine in Bisbee, AZ; Charles E. Mills for his contributions at Morenci and Inspiration Copper and founding Apache Powder Co. and The Valley National Bank; John S. Finlay and Edwin B. Royle for their invention of the mucking machine; and Louis Caryl Graton for his ore deposits research and teaching economic geology at Harvard University.

The Morenci In-pit Crusher and Conveyor System has been designed with safe production and cost savings in mind. Large open pit mines around the world have been installing semi-mobile crushers and linking them with a pit conveyor system to lower unit cost. At Morenci two 60/89 in. gyratory crushers are incorporated into the semi-mobile crushing plants. The ore is reduced to -8 in. and transported out of the mine on a 60 in. steel cable belt. This paper includes an overview of the Morenci In-pit Crusher and Conveyor System from the drawing board to open pit installation and finally a discussion on operating and repair considerations.

The expansion in gold production in the Carlin 'Trend over the last few years has been one of staggering proportion. To increase gold production while minimizing capital requirements and providing for the safe and efficient mining and processing of ores has required a tremendous effort by the Mine Engineering group at Newmont Gold. This paper discusses the organizational changes implemented to effectively deal with a full range of engineering problems and how the Newmont Gold Mine Engineering group dealt with these problems. Specially developed computer software and their applications will be explained. Improvements in the techniques used in converting geologic resources into reserves, and in scheduling the mining of multiple pits to feed multiple processing facilities, as well as ore control procedures are presented. Current mine engineering practices are discussed.

Copper smelter flue dusts containing arsenic are hazardous materials requiring environmentally accept-able disposal, preferably with re-source recovery under the RCRA and CRCLA regulations. However, the known resource recovery processes entail capital and operating costs greater than can be justified by the revenue of the recovered metal. Consequently, the smelting industry is tending to forego resource recovery in favor of encapsulation and storage in a certified class I hazardous waste site, or in a dedicated facility located at the source Superfund site. Order of magnitude costs for this option with portland cement encapsulation are estimated at $100 per ton, not including transportation. Industrial adoption of a new resource recovery process re-quires that its cost, including capital amortization, exceed the cost of encapsulation and storage only by the amount of the offsetting revenue from sale of metal. The lime-roast/ammoniacal leaching process is expected to meet this goal.

The stable domestic supply of gallium, indium, and germanium has been identified as a critical need for the United States. Electric arc furnace dusts, processed to recover zinc, produce a residue that could be a potential source of these critical materials. An industrial zinc leach residue was characterized to determine its particle size, chemical composition, and predominant mineral phases. Heated, atmospheric, agitated leaching using sulfuric acid and hydrochloric acid was examined to determine the extractions of gallium, indium, and germanium as a function of concentration and temperature. Extractions of gallium were found to be similar to iron in all experiments. The maximum percentage of Ga, Ge, and In leached into solution were 71%, 63%, and 48%, respectively.

Stationary air pollutant sources established prior to the New Source Performance Standard (NSPS) are not, at present, subject to federal emissions regulations. However, proposed legislation could require many existing stationary sources to reduce emissions. This paper will report upon the laboratory work undertaken to date by B&W to commercialize a limestone system for sulfur capture both in pulverized coal and cyclone coal-fired utility boilers. Updates will be provided on the US EPA/State of Ohio/Ohio Edison/B&W sponsored pulverized coal full-scale limestone injection demonstration, and on the EPRI/Baltimore Gas 8 Electric, Atlantic Electric/B&W sponsored laboratory-scale cyclone coal limestone injection investigations.

Much has been said and written about the world's, and particularly the united states of America's, energy crisis. The relative changes between cost components of production have altered because the days of cheap energy have now gone. Decisions that made capital investment reduction attractive to treat large tonnage lower grade ore bodies appear to be no longer valid because average energy costs for comminution that were less than 1 cent per kilowatt hour in 1972, are now more than 3 cents and will shortly become 6 cents according to some projections. Increased capital investment to improve processing energy efficiencies are certainly going to be pursued. Energy today is the largest cost component in the average mineral production facility. It takes more than 12000 kilowatt hours to produce one ton of finished steel and more than 60000 kilowatt hours for each ton of copper and aluminum.

In a systematic study, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) evaluated seat designs in low- and mid-seam shuttle cars during production operations at two underground coal mines in southern West Virginia. The purpose was to support, with additional data, earlier findings that NIOSH ergonomic seat designs (featuring viscoelastic foam padding and lower-back support) may help reduce health risks to operators of coal mine shuttle cars. Eight shuttle car operators evaluated seven seat designs (one already in use in each vehicle and five NIOSH designs) relative to perceived and measured whole-body vibration (WBV) exposure (including vehicle jarring/jolting) and discomfort. Operators’ perceptions using a visual analog scale (VAS) and questionnaire ratings were compared with International Standards Organization (ISO) 2631-1:1985 fatigue-decreased proficiency (FDP) limits and measured WBV levels on low- and mid-seam shuttle cars. Objective and subjective data results indicated that NIOSH seat designs (with added adjustability, lower-back support and improved seat padding) performed better to reduce vehicle jarring/jolting levels and that shuttle car operators favored them over existing seat designs. The NIOSH low- and mid-seam shuttle car seats showed 45 to 77 percent better performance in FDP and 9 to 60 percent better performance overall in operators’ ratings. Considering the VAS results for low- and mid-seam shuttle cars under no-load conditions, operators rated the level of jarring/jolting 18 to 89 percent lower with the NIOSH seats. Reductions in measured vehicle jarring/jolting were 19 to 46 percent for the three-directional vector sum accelerations relative to the existing seats on the low- and mid-seam shuttle cars. Questionnaire responses indicated that operators for both shuttle car models rated NIOSH seat designs as more comfortable overall. Vehicle operators most frequently suggested adding armrests to improve the seats on the mid-seam shuttle car. A suggested improvement for the low-seam shuttle car was to make the seat a better fit for the operator compartment, which would enhance clearance between the operator and vehicle controls and allow for better seat adjustment and operator visibility.

The Coeur d'Alene Mining District of northern Idaho is remarkable for its number of large ore bodies and for the amount of its historical production of lead, zinc and silver (Fig. 1). Since veins were first discovered in 1884, more than 127 Mt (140 million st) of ore have been produced from narrow, high-grade veins. Mining continues at the Lucky Friday, Galena and Sunshine mines (Fig. 2). All have been in production for decades. At these mines, more efficient mining and exploration techniques have reduced costs while adding significant new reserves. Even the old Bunker Hill Mine, where ore was first found in 1875, continues operation on a limited basis, partly involving production of world-class pyromorphite specimens. Until recently, the Coeur Mine was also a profitable silver producer. Other large producers have included the Star-Morning, Hecla, Page, Standard-Mammoth, Hercules and Gold Hunter mines (Fig. 2). The first deposits were discovered by prospectors who spilled over from the Murray gold mining district, 24 km (15 miles) to the north. The Bunker Hill Mine was founded the year after the first veins were discovered. Bunker Hill has now operated for more than 100 years. Production includes 2.3 Mt (2.6 million st) of lead, 1.1 Mt (1.2 million st) of zinc and 4.1 kt (132 million oz) of silver. Total district production through 1996 (Springer, 1997) amounted to 7.3 Mt (8.1 million st) of lead, 3 Mt (3.3 million st) of zinc, and 34.5 kt (1.109 billion oz) of silver. This record establishes the district as the largest recorded producer of silver in the world, while also yielding major quantities of lead and zinc. Only Potosi, Bolivia, may have produced more silver, although records are unclear. Despite the district's longevity, historic production and current activity, the published literature on the district lags behind with regard to recent concepts of district geology. The most recent comprehensive US Geological Sur- vey (USGS) bulletins (Hobbs et al., 1965; Fryklund, 1964) are dated. Much research in the last half century has been short-lived or geographically restricted because the district is large and its geology is complex - and even this research tends to remain unpublished. Geometallurgical assessment of orebodies in the mining industry typically relies on bench-scale or lab-based characterization techniques. In this study, we investigate drone- and tripod-based field hyperspectral imaging as a potential addition to the geometallurgy toolkit in multiple applications. This pilot study tests hyperspectral imaging for largescale mineral mapping in and around the active Lisbon Valley copper mine, including natural exposures, previously producing U-V mines, highwalls, dumps, and leaching sites. Tests include different (supervised and unsupervised) mineral data classification methods, varying mineral spectral reference libraries, comparison with ground-truth geological and spectroscopic mapping and sampling, and integration with LiDAR data. The results show that hyperspectral scans can produce spatially registered maps of the distribution of different spectrally active mineral types over dumps, highwalls, leach pads, and natural outcrops. Clays, other phyllosilicates, carbonates, and sulfates showed up particularly well. The sensor was also able to distinguish dry from lixiviant-saturated areas and map different clay types on the leach pads, and shows promise for differentiating types and health of vegetation. These results suggest that hyperspectral imaging, if coupled with robust ground-truthing, can be a useful complement to existing geometallurgical techniques in the mining industry, such as geological mapping, blast hole sampling and automated mineralogy identifications, and handheld spectrometry. In particular, hyperspectral imaging has promise for mapping the distribution of acid-consuming minerals; mapping the distribution of swelling, sliming, and heap-blinding clays; and pinpointing problem areas on heap leach pad surfaces.

An investigation into the source mechanism of mining-induced seismic activity plays a vital role in understanding the various modes of failure observed in the underground deep-level South African mining environment. The seismic events data for this study was captured by the mine-wide seismic system operating at Kloof Gold Mine. This system comprises 40 4.5 Hz tri-axial geophones sampling at 6 kHz installed at locations that surround the stopes mining the Ventersdorp Contact Reef (VCR), Main Reef (MR) and Kloof Reef (KR). A set of 103,753 mining-related seismic events (-3.0≤ ML ≤2.7) that occurred during 2017 and 2018 was selected for this study. The mining depth of these seismic events ranges from 1600 – 4200 m; most located close to stopes mining the VCR ore body. The main criteria used to select a subset of events for detailed analysis were the number of stations that recorded the seismic event and the azimuthal distribution of the sensors.

The Work Crew Performance Model (WCPM) is a method for designing, implementing, and evaluating? performance improvement strategies for machine operators and other mining personnel. The WCPM offers a practical approach for measuring job proficiency and identifying costly behaviors. It enables interventions aimed at performance improvement, especially training, to be assessed monetarily. Two interrelated elements of the WCPM are emphasized: observational techniques for establishing performance baselines and measuring performance outcomes and cost linkages between job competencies and measures related to profitability. Inter-and intra-subject differences in performance-related behaviors of regular and incidental shuttle car operators were detected during field validation of the WCPM. Downtime data were used as outcome measures to test linkages between performance error rates and cost consequences. Use of a simulation program for analyzing continuous mining face operations showed how common shuttle car operating parameters (e.g., payload, tram rate) can be used as cost-conscious indicators of performance variability and therefore as targets for performance improvement.
