A variety of processing technologies exist for recovery from both primary and secondary sources of rhenium. Currently, there are no known primary rhenium deposits, thus, the method in which primary rhenium is produced is dependent on the commodity of which it is a byproduct, e.g., copper, molybdenum, uranium, etc. In addition, focus on the recovery of rhenium from secondary sources, such as alloy scraps and catalysts, is continually growing. "The Netherlands has major resources of sand, gravel and clay, exploited mainly for construction works and the building materials industry. As in most western countries, mineral extraction meets with considerable societal resistance. To this end, Dutch minerals policy aims to prevent extraction by promoting economical use of materials, and the use of alternative (secondary or renewable) materials. Up till recently, it also included a system of production planning to sustain supplies of regionally scarce materials. Dutch policy development is reviewed and discussed in terms of pitfalls and possibilities for mineral planning in general. Promoting secondary substitution has been quite successful, and presents an example. In contrast, the production planning system has been controversial from the start and ineffective as a result, mainly because it attempted to solve supply problems without properly addressing the underlying resistance. In order to effectively model subsidence caused by underground openings, a two-dimensional computer code has been developed which couples near- and far-field response. The near-field is simulated by a discrete element block code and a finite difference code represents the continuum region in the far-field. The explicit equations allow rapid and inexpensive solutions to geometries which may lead to subsidence. Two sample problems are presented which illustrate the important features of the code.

There has been a steady increase in shiploading capacities in the last 20 years. One of the reasons has been the general increase in ship sizes, with the largest vessels currently around 280,000 DWT in the bulk trades. Obviously, the large vessels can accept loads faster and their economic utilization justifies higher loading rates, up to a point. The high capacity facilities have loading rates far beyond this point. The economic logic of these facilities is based on the fact that for a given annual throughput the capital and operating cost of a single high capacity system is less than that of two smaller systems. Thus, where the projected throughputs are large, there is a great incentive to reduce capital costs by maximizing capacity. Tubarao, in Brazil, designed for a 100 million ton per year throughput with one finger pier and one high capacity berth is a successful demonstration of this approach. In the current state of the art, the high capacity systems have shiploading capacities in the range of 10,000 - 16,000 TPH, for annual throughputs of 20 million tons and larger per loading berth.

One of the greatest environmental issues related to the development of the mining activity is the generation of Acid Mine Drainage (AMD). Many methods have been developed for AMD treatment, being wetlands a good option for heavy metal removal. In this sense, the implementation of artificial wetlands for the treatment of mining effluents would seem to be an environmentally friendly alternative. In this paper, we present the results on the elimination of heavy metals (Cu, Zn, Pb and Fe) using two Peruvian native species such as Schoenoplectus californicus (C.A. Mey.) and Phragmites australis (Cav.) Trin. Ex Steud. The results show that Schoenoplectus californicus preferentially removes copper (82 and 90%), lead (88 and 92%) and iron (28 and 69%), whereas Phragmites australis removes copper (68 and 87%) and zinc (53 and 95%). Likewise, it is observed that the Schoenoplectus californicus mainly retains the ions in its root, copper (89%), zinc (84%) and iron (76%). While the Phragmites australis accumulates iron (62%) and copper (74%) in the steam and root part respectively

INTRODUCTION Koolyanobbing is an open cut iron ore mine, which is located in Yilgarn region of Western Australia. To prevent the operators from suffering silicosis diseases and protect the air from being polluted, a series of dust control measures have been taken. These measures include ventilation and dust control system for sample preparation shed, dust collecting system for drill rig, dust suppression system for ore processing plant, dust control for haul road. The details related to individual dust control measure are dealt as follows. SAMPLE PREPARATION SHED DUST CONTROL The sample preparation is one of the major dust sources at Koolyanobbing. The activity is being carried out at the sample preparation shed. It typically needs to go through the following stages, that is, crushing, splitting, drying and pulverising. The amount of dust generated from crushing and splitting is mainly determined by the moisture content contained in the pre- pared sample. A significant amount of dust is generated at the sample pulverising stage due to cleaning sample bowl with com- pressed air. To protect the sample preparing personnel's health and make the dust level in the air meet the requirement from the health and safety authority, a central ventilation and dust control system has been installed at the sample preparation shed. As shown in Fig. l, the system consists of suction heads, suction lines, dust collector and vacuum fan. The fan creates vacuum environment in the system, therefore the dust is drawn into the dust collector through the suction heads and suction lines. The dust collector is of fabric filter. When the dusty air comes to the filter, the dust in the air is collected and retained on the surface of the filter while the clean air passes through and enters the atmosphere. The retained dust is blowed out by the pressured air pulses and deposits into the dust bin underneath the filter. A time relay device is used to control the cleaning time and the cleaning interval. DRILL RIG DUST CONTROL A hydraulic percussion drill is used to drill blast holes. To carry out the drilling operation properly and efficiently, the cut- tings are being flushed out of the hole by the compressed air. In order to prevent from the fine particles in the cuttings escaping to the air, a dust collector is attached to the drill. The collector mainly consists of suction head, cyclone and bag filter. Refer to Fig. 2. The suction head is installed at the lower end of the feed beams and is movable. The moving range is up to 250 mm. It is not only used to restrict the cuttings, but also used to prevent water from entering the filters when drilling wet hole. A 406 mm diameter primary cyclone is used to separate the heaviest particles in the cuttings. It is also used as blast holes sampling equipment. One part of the dust particles are collected by a sample bag through a splitter attached to the end of the cy- clone. The rest of the particles fall down to the ground through the closing rubber. The bag filter is driven by a hydraulic motor (1). It is used to collect the lighter particles in the cuttings. The filtering area is 16 m2 and the dust separation efficiency is up to 99.9%. The working principle of the filter is demonstrated in Fig. 3. When the rock drill (9) flushing is turned on, the pressurised air from the compressor is directed to the rock drill and to the pres- sure switch (10). The pressured air will open the pressure switch to de-energise and close the solenoid valve (4) The pressure affecting the cut-off cylinder (5) keeps the exhaust port flap open. When the flushing valve (8) is closed, the pressure affecting the cut-off cylinder disappears and the internal intake opening flap is closed by a spring. The pressure also ceases to affect the pressure switch and the spring switches the contact to the point 2. The time relay (11) is now activated and gives a 0.5 second current impulse to the solenoid valve and keeps the current cut off for approx 8 seconds. When the solenoid valve is live, it opens and lets an impulse of pressured air to the filters (2). These impulses will clean the filters.

Multiple seam mining is predominant throughout the central Pennsylvania Appalachian coal fields. Wide ranges in individual seam thickness, coal quality, and overburden characteristics are common throughout the region. On typical mining permits, ranging from 404 x 103 to 2023 x 103 m2 (100 to 500 acres), often as many as eight seams are concurrently mined, with each interburden requiring unique economic and environmental consideration in the mine plan. Specifically, this paper presents several planning tools and operational guidelines developed in response to current regulations for the special handling of potentially acid-forming materials as they are related to development and operation of multiple seam mines.

As part of the 3RPORT and NEBT Projects, 5-mile Combined Sewer Overflow Tunnels were excavated with a 19 ft diameter Slurry and 26 ft diameter EPB Tunnel Boring Machines. Due to the difficult geological and hydrogeological conditions, both tunnels were excavated maintaining a ground support pressure between 2 and 5.5 bar imposing significant challenges to the projects. The first part of the paper describes the general characteristics of both projects while the second part focuses on the challenges and technical details of the pressurized breakthroughs that took place in deep shafts excavated in urban environment as part of the projects.

Dumper operators are frequently exposed to whole body vibration (WBV) in surface mines. Surface mining activities involve the amalgamation of comparatively high intensity of vibration and extended exposure durations. Efficient risk reduction mandates knowing of important phases of a task that poses a threat to health of dumper operators. So far in India very limited studies have been reported on WBV exposure with regard to surface mines. This paper evaluates WBV of dumper operators based on ISO 2631-1:1997 Standards and European Union (EU) Directive 2002 for different phases of job cycle. Six dumpers were considered for this study and the vibration measurements were made for all the four phases of the job cycle by placing the triaxial accelerometer on the operator’s seat-surface and at the seat-back, independently. The findings of the study revealed that the haulage task (loaded travel and empty travel) remains the chief contributor to vibration exposure according to seat-surface and seat-back measurements. Maximum frequency weighted root mean square (RMS) of 1.12 m/s2 and 1.09 m/s2 were reported for empty travel task for seat-surface and seat-back measurements, respectively. For seat-surface measurements based on RMS, Z axis remains as the dominant axis of vibration for all the dumpers during haulage task, whereas for seat-back measurements, the dominant axis varies between X and Y. Exposure action value (EAV) based on RMS has exceeded the threshold value of 0.5 m/s2 for all the dumpers during loaded travel and empty travel for seat-surface as well as for seat-back measurements.

The terms environment and environmental control, when used in today's context, generally imply to the average individual, something to do with pollution and pollution control. These latter terms, likewise, impart visions of fouled air and dirty water attributable largely to the industrial segment of American society. We have been conditioned, by various means, over the past ten years to equate environ¬mental control with pollution control. We have been trained to think of industrial environmental control programs as efforts conceived only to comply with one or more of the recently imposed pollution control regulations. Almost automatically we; approach consideration of environmental control with a degree of pessimism that is we assume that pollution prompted the control program. It is the purpose of this discussion to demonstrate that environmental control. at least as it exists and has existed within the crushed stone industry, involves far more than simply control or reduction of air and water pollution. It involves a dedication to the enhancement of each of the several "mini-environments" which together comprise the total world surrounding any given crushed stone operation. Environmental control, exercised properly, is an optimistic, constructive, forward-looking, enhancing type of activity. It is a function which has been, and should continue to be, willingly and expectantly undertaken by informed management personnel. In short, environmental control. is an activity from which both industry and society can and should benefit.

Introduction Technological advances in mining and processing have started the domestic mining and mineral industry back on the road to competitiveness. A massive trade deficit, however, coupled with foreign competition and more government regulations threaten to slow this recovery. So say mining executives in Colorado and Minnesota. These industry decision-makers agree that their challenge is to continue the technical innovations of their industry. The journey back to profitability and competitiveness means improved products, they say, but at lower production costs. At separate gatherings in January, officials in both states said that they believe their industry is up to the challenge. Worker attitudes will have to change, they understand, and management styles will need adjusting. And, while they are willing to make the necessary adjustments, they are going to need some help. Or, at the very least, less interference from the federal government. Foreign markets, all but closed to American products, must be opened up on a reciprocal basis. The nation's $170 billion trade deficit is a priority item that can no longer be ignored. And, closer to home, federal and state environmental regulations concerning mineral production must themselves be monitored. 1987 in Colorado While Colorado's service and trade industries should have a fairly good 1987, the state's mining industry can expect another disappointing year filled with layoffs and declining profits, according to the Colorado Mining Association. Once again, foreign competition and government regulations are seen as the main reasons for the mineral industry's woes. And state mining officials see little relief until at least the 1990s. Speaking to a group of reporters at its annual press briefing in Denver, CMA officials said Colorado's overall nonfuel mineral production is expected to fluctuate between a flat and declining growth trend. Mining employment in the state is expected to fall by 400 people this year, to about 7500. In 1981, Colorado mines employed as many as 17,800 people. During the 1970s and early 1980s, the employment rate in mining in the state grew by 12% annually, according to a summary report compiled by the CMA. Last year, worldwide molybdenum production continued to exceed demand US moly producers, therefore, were forced to continue their familiar path of production cutbacks, as well as workforce reductions. And some molybdenum mines in the US closed altogether, the CMA report stated. In Colorado, Amax's Climax and Henderson molybdenum mines operated at about 50% of combined capacity. Climax employed about 200 people at the beginning of 1987, producing about 5.4 kt/d (6000 stpd) or ore. Henderson employed about 700 people, producing about 24.5 kt/d (27,000 stpd) of ore. In coal, the number of licensed coal mines in Colorado has declined from 124 in 1960 to 43 in 1986, of which only 23 were producing. Once a stable source of employment and production, the metallurgical coal industry in the state has only one surviving metallurgical coal mine, Mid-Continent's Orchard Valley mine. High production and transportation costs, weakness in the US steel industry, and a weak market position have contributed to the decline, the summary reported. Magnetic surveying and map production is well established in land based mineral exploration. Magnetic data are routinely used to map geology in covered terrains, to estimate the depth to basement in overburden covered areas, and to identify altered zones, mineralization, bedding attitudes, and fault networks both regionally in map view, and through interpretation to depth in 3D. Best practices for magnetic survey methods and magnetic interpretation exist in all areas of land based geophysical survey methodology - mineral exploration, hydrocarbon exploration, geological mapping, archeological mapping, and in military applications. At sea, and particularly under the sea, sophisticated magnetic surveys are being done, but it can be argued that these are primarily in niche applications, for example in naval mine-hunting and UXO applications. Magnetic data is not normally collected on AUVs and ROVs conducting mapping and hydrographic survey operations. OFG has developed physical and mathematical calibration routines so that magnetometers can be mounted directly onto AUV and ROV bodies where significant heading errors and magnetic gradients exist. This simplifies the routine deployment of magnetometers on AUVs and ROVs for mineral exploration and other magnetic survey applications without the need for towed bodies, ungainly mounting frames, or degaussing of the survey equipment. Our experience shows that magnetometers can be operated routinely on AUVs and ROVs and that with careful processing useful maps can be produced routinely at low cost.

In 1950 Kaiser Steel Corporation acquired control of the Utah Fuel Company, a pioneer Utah coal concern owning large reserves of high volatile coking coal near Sunnyside, Utah. The mines at Sunnyside have been producing high quality coking coal since the late 1890's. Kaiser Steel acquired the coal deposits at Sunnyside in order to supply the necessary coke for its steel plant at Fontana, California. The Sunnyside coal deposits are made up of two mineable beds, the upper and lower Sunnyside seams. Both seams outcrop along the southward facing escarpment of the Book Cliffs. The coal seams dip under the massive sandstones of the Book Cliffs to the northeast at 5 to 22 pct., with the steepest-part being near the outcrop. Mining at Sunnyside up to 1961 had been carried on with room and pillar methods. The deep cover and rotten roof conditions, along with the need of increased tonnage, required a change of mining technique. Numerous ideas were presented, discussed, and economically analyzed. Several people involved in these discussions, with the aid of W.W. II, had been introduced to the European methods of coal mining, namely the longwall technique. The European mines had long been plagued with near similar conditions as those at Sunnyside, particularly the deep cover problem. The longwall method seemed to be working very well under these conditions, and with the extensive studies given longwalling by the Kaiser Steel mining officials, it was decided to give longwalling a try.

The Bureau of Mines investigated technologies for determining the integrity of in situ leach mining wells. A self-contained trailer-mounted well integrity testing system (WITS) was designed and built to enable rapid testing of well casings for leaks as required by environmental regulations. The WITS utilizes two inflatable packers to seal off the entire casing length or any portion thereof. Water pressure is built between the packers to the desired test pressure, and the presence or absence of casing leaks is determined by monitoring the pressure drop between the packers. A winch and steel cable are used to run the packers in and out of the well. The WITS underwent an industry field test at the Irigaray in situ uranium leaching mine near Buffalo, WY. A total of 37 wells with an average depth of 225 ft (69 m) were tested at an average rate of four wells per 8-h shift with a two-person operating crew. This represents a 75-pct time savings and an 83-pct labor savings compared to the rigid-pipe method previously used at the mine, with which a three-person crew tested an average of one well per shift.

Pneumatic, triboelectrostatic processing of physical mixtures containing fine (-200 mesh) particulate may have significant application potential in the mining and energy industries. Such dry processing methods, especially for finely comminuted materials, have not been examined in as much detail as wet processing methods nor have been part of the training or education of mining and process engineers. We have examined fundamental and applied physical and engineering factors controlling triboelectrostatic beneficiation of fine-sized physical mixtures, one of which -combustion fly ash -has size, heterogeneity and mineral concentrations typical of those expected in mined minerals. The applicability of dry processing, however, cannot be readily evaluated because of the unavailability of standard procedures for process assessment.

Mining represents the first industry in the United States to have federally mandated training for its workers. Although the topics to be covered are specified in 30 CFR 48, course content is left to the discretion of the individual mine operators. Unfortunately, certain topics to be covered, such as prevention of accidents, are usually mine specific, making it very difficult to use the same course content in every mine. Further, training requirements may change from one mine to another, due to changes in the demographic characteristics of the workers, or changes in job and organizational characteristics. Therefore, if the intention of safety training is to modify the behavior of workers, it is expected that there should be some changes in the content of safety training programs in order to address the specific requirements of individual mines, or at least mines of similar worker and job characteristics. This study has been directed towards the development of a systems-based procedure for conducting a needs analysis. A special effort was made to understand the psychology of worker behavior by analyzing worker reactions to various organizational and job characteristics.

Design of the Bajo de la Alumbrera Project started in June 1995 and concentrate production commenced early in the Third Quarter of 1997. The project is situated in North-Western Argentina and is being developed by Minera Alumbrera Limited which is owned by MIM Holdings Limited of Australia (50%), North Limited of Australia (25%) and Rio Algom Limited of Canada (25%). This paper outlines the key features that were incorporated in the design from both process and plant layout perspectives. It explains the background of flowsheet and equipment selection for the plant. A feature of the flowsheet is that it incorporates gravity gold circuits in both primary and regrind circuits for recovery of gold to dore as well as in the copper concentrate product.

St. Peter sandstone is very different from the minerals and rocks that have been studied extensively in mining. On the one hand, it is brittle as characterized by an unusually high friction angle and steeply curved failure envelopes. On the other hand, it is friable, possessing extremely low, and in most cases zero cohesion. The scarcity of the ground control techniques for this particular mining environment has created many difficulties for the mine operators. In order to resolve these problems, the geotechnical properties of the St. Peter sandstones were investigated through a comprehensive research program, which included uniaxial test, triaxial test, porosity test, thin section, X-ray diffraction (XRD), and scanning electron microscope (SEM). The specimens used for the uniaxial and triaxial tests were specially prepared because of the highly friable nature of the St. Peter sandstone. Thin section, XRD and SEM were utilized to examine the effect of the microstructure of the St. Peter sandstones on its strength characteristics.

The Park City District, one of three major mining districts in Utah, is located approximately 20 miles southeast of Salt Lake City on the eastern slope of the Wasatch Mountains. The district has been in near continuous production since 1869. Production has been sustained from exceptionally long bedded replacement ore bodies in the Thaynes, Park City, and Humbug formations and also from several major veins.
