Introduction My first contact with industrial milling was during the time I worked in the electricity generating industry in the United Kingdom. In visits to power stations to investigate either deposits in the boiler furnaces or polluting deposits settling around the stacks. I had to check the performance of the vertical coal pulverizers, since poor pulverization aggravated both problems. Naturally, then, when I came to the USA in 1957 to take a PhD in fuel technology at Penn State, I was put to work to review the science of coal pulverization. After this reviewing, I was completely confused. On one hand, there was a well-developed understanding of stress-strain equations, and a rap- idly developing knowledge of how stressed, brittle solids fractured, based on the Griffith crack theory. On the other hand, reading in the grinding literature gave me: • Kick's Law, which was clearly not correct in the light of modern fracture theory; • Rittinger's Law, which was also clearly not correct; • Bond's Third Law of Comminution, which was claimed to have something to do with the Griffith crack theory, but where the connection between the two was made by intuitive pseudo- scientific reasoning I could not accept; • the choice of mill motor power for the most common type of coal mill, the Raymond pulverizer, was calculated from the fan power required to move air through the mill. Although I could accept the empirical connection between the two, it made no sense from the point of view of fracture energy. Even today, most books or review chapters on size reduction start from these laws. incorrect statements abound in the literature, such as “the Hardgrove Index is based on Rittinger's Law," which it is not, "The Bond theory states that work input is proportional to new crack tip length produced in particle breakage," which is not true, etc. My own test work showed that these "laws" did not fit the data for grinding of coal. At about this time, Epstein (1 948) and Broadbent and Callcott (1 956), following the original work by R.L. Brown (1941) at the British Coal Utilization Research Association, proposed describing breakage as a series of fracture stages. I took their concepts and developed the basic differential equation for a batch grinding process continuous in time, analogous to a batch chemical reactor. Robin Gardner then joined the project and did his PhD on treating batch grinding in the same way as a batch chemical reactor. He found that the basic equation had already been partially derived by Sedlatschek and Bass (1 953) in Germany. We confirmed experimentally the validity of the equations for describing batch grinding (1 962) and formulated the equation describing steady-state continuous grinding in a fully-mixed mill. At about the time this work was published, Gaudin and Meloy (1962) and Filippov (1961) independently published essentially the same equations, but without experimental proof of the validity of the concepts. I will give a brief overview of what these beginnings had led to in the design of mills for size and power, and show some of the results of this more detailed understanding of grinding processes. Concepts of Fracture Mills such as tumbling ball, rod, pebble and autogenous mills and vertical mills such as the Raymond, and E-type apply compressive stress to lumps or particles relatively slowly. Compressive stress applied to a particle of an elastic brittle solid imparts overall strain energy to the solid and produces local regions of tensile stress, (Fig. 1) (Berenbaum and Brodie, 1959). Irwin (1949) showed from solution of the stress-strain solutions that a small hole in a region of tensile stress reduces stress concentration at the hole, that is, the tensile stress at the tip of a crack or flaw in a solid is much higher than the general tensile stress in the region. The longer the crack, the higher the stress concentration. Griffith (1920) hypothesized that when the regional tensile stress is large enough, then the chemical bonds at a preexisting crack tip are stretched to breaking point, as illustrated in Fig. 2. When the bonds break, the crack becomes longer, the tensile stress concentration increases, the situation is unstable and a crack opens up (propagates) a surface of tensile stress, creating its own tensile stress at the leading edge. Stored strain energy is converted to the kinetic energy of the moving stress field, which is analogous to sound propagation through the solid, so the crack tip accelerates to velocities approaching those of sound. The moving crack will pass through regions that were previously under regional compressive stress. Traditionally, secant piles have been utilized to provide temporary support during excavation for shafts and cut-and-cover tunnels. As an alternative, the secant piles can be included into the permanent structure, where they serve as the envelope sustaining the lateral loads and gravity of the permanent structure in addition to supporting the excavation during construction. This has several benets, such as shorter building times and lower excavation costs. Recent construction of an approach structure and an underground station as part of Montréal, Canada’s Réseau Express Métropolitain (REM), one of the biggest transit systems in North America, was completed with remarkable success using this. In this paper, a case study based on a project that employed secant piles as the permanent liner is presented. Techniques to guarantee a watertight construction with over a century of service life are described, along with a variety of structural and waterproong methods applied to create an economical design.

Carbonaceous sedimentary rocks are abundant in the upper part of the caldera or maar that hosts the Puebio Viejo Au-Ag district, and much of the Moore sulfide zone is in these rocks. These rocks are thinly layered and contain scattered plant remains and variable amounts of volcaniclastic debris and pyrite. The carbonaceous matter in the sediments yields no X-ray diffraction pattern and is not graphite. It has C/N ratios of 4 to 10, and &13C values of about -25 per mil, which indicate that it is dominantly of marine organic origin and partly degraded. Atomic S/C ratios in the unmineralized part of the carbonaceous rocks have a median of about 1.2, much higher than most similar unmineralized rocks, reflecting not only the abundance of pyrite in the sediments, but also the fact that the organic material contains several percent sulfur. Extracts from the organic material indicate that it is thermally mature and that it reacted with the hydrothermal solutions. Atomic S/C ratios in the mineralized carbonaceous rocks are generally higher than those in unmineralized carbonaceous rocks, ranging to values of 5 and more. These differences indicate that significant amounts of carbon were consumed by the reduction of sulfate and metal chloride complexes in the mineralizing fluids as they passed through the carbonaceous sediments. Direct reaction between organic material and ferrous chloride-bearing, acid-sulfate hydrothermal solutions probably caused continuous deposition of pyrite during this period. Intermittent deposition of gold from chloride complexes by the same reaction was probably facilitated by boiling or C02 effervescence.

Swelling clays, such as montmorillonite, contribute significantly to the poor dewatering and consolidation behavior of the Florida phosphate clay wastes. Understanding and to a degree, control of the forces which cause the swelling behavior may aid in supplying a solution to this problem. The technical feasibility of utilizing control- led dispersion for aiding dewatering of phosphatic slimes was investigated. This technique is based upon inhibition of swelling and self-dispersing tendencies of the montmorillonite clays by dispersing the solids in electrolyte solutions. Through this process, significant improvements in settling rates and sediment solids content were achieved in both pure clay systems and on simulated phosphate slimes.

Electrostatic and/or high tension separation has been used for the separation of rare metal bearing minerals, foods, industrial wastes and so on. Since the separation is achieved by the difference mainly in surface conductivity of particles, the efficiency in humid circumstances is very low, and then, the applicability is considerably limited. We applied the following two-stage pretreatment technique to the separation process, which involves (1) adjustment of surface wettability by adsorbing surfactant on the particle surface and (2) control of the surface conductivity by spraying with electrolyte aqueous solution. The addition of this pretreatment technique has been found to have a great advantage over conventional methods. Separation efficiency is achieved even in humid circumstances and selectivity can also be obtained between insulator minerals. The selectivity is very similar to that of flotation in wet process. This separation technique will be applied not only to mineral processing but the processing of industrial waste such as electric and electronic waste materials.

The Stillwater Mining Company, a partnership of Pittsburg & Midway Coal Mining Co. and Manville Corporation, operates a precious metals smelter at Columbus, Montana to further up-grade concentrates from its platinum/palladium mine. The smelter began operation in the summer of 1990. The gas cleaning system in the facility utilizes "oxidation/dilute mode" dual-alkali scrubbing technology to capture sulfur oxide gases from the process gas streams. This paper describes the rationale for selecting the dilute mode dual-alkali system and summarizes design parameters. Start-up problems and their solutions are also discussed.

The existing methods for recycling lithium-ion batteries present initial hurdles related to the safe handling and preparation of the batteries to avert potential explosions. Submerging batteries in sodium chloride (NaCl) solution has become an acceptable industrial practice. However, the use of NaCl to discharge lithium-ion batteries rusts the batteries’ cases and releases metals which impacts the downstream processes that involve selective recovery of Li. This study aimed to determine the optimal concentrations and pH range of NaCl for the discharge of lithium-ion batteries for the purpose of minimizing the leach of Al, Co, Cu, Fe, Li, and Ni.

This paper presents the results of a study of case histories of projects on which sinking caissons were used to construct shafts for tunnel construction and other underground works. Design methodologies are reviewed with respect to the impact of soil and groundwater conditions on the performance and constructability of sinking caissons. Factors which have led to success or failure are reviewed and evaluated, and recommendations for future investigation, design and construction activities are presented. Cost data for five recent projects are reviewed and compared to the cost of shaft installation by other means.

Arch Mineral has developed several computer programs that aid the surface mine planning function. These programs are utilized to perform long term projections for various area or semi-area stripping operations. The program generated reports include yardage, tonnage, quality and ratio information for the user-specified time periods. The projections are used to anticipate the annual budget, to compare alternative mine plans and to analyze acquisition candidates. The programs are user friendly, fast and accurate. Geological Grid File Two data files must be set-up and used in conjunction with the mine planning programs. These are a geological data file and a general input file.

Peabody's Camoy mining system is a truly continuous conceptual method of underground mining of coal. The system solves the three factors which limit coal from being mined continuously. Camoy's principal features are improved productivity and increased recovery. A conservative retreat production rate of 2 1/2 times normal continuous miner room-and-pillar mining rates are projected for a 6-7' seam. Overall mine productivity will be 2 times normal, with a potential for considerably higher rates. Major incremental production increases can be achieved by partial implementation of the system. Total mine recoveries of 75% are expected. The system includes both advance and retreat mining. The retreat half of the approach encompasses many of the features of short wall mining. A central panel is prepared for retreat mining by driving entries using room-and-pillar mining to the left and right of it. The room-and-pillar mining encompasses the advance features of Camoy. In the retreat phase, the roof of the face is supported by self advancing chocks or shields. All mining is done under the chocks by a continuous miner. As the miner advances the chocks continuously move forward behind it. Thus, as in a typical short wall system, continuous roof support is attained. Ventilation is unidirectional, another characteristic of short-wall type systems. Fresh air is brought in and passed over the working personnel. It moves to the face where the continuous miner is operating, picks up the generated dust and released methane, and is exhausted away from all personnel. Exposure to respirable dust and ignition hazards due to methane build-ups are almost totally eliminated. Thus, the second limiting factor is overcome and continuous ventilation is attained. Coal mined with the continuous miner is passed to a surge car and then to a Serpentix conveyor. The Serpentix, a Peabody invention, is a flexible conveyor capable of going around corners.

The paper discusses the legislative and practical approach adopted to problems of management of environment in relation to coal mining in a very sensitive area of the south coast of New South Wales. The environmental problems are complicated in this area due to multiple and very often conflicting land usages. The environmental approach in relation to water quality maintenance, noise control and air quality is discussed and methods adopted meet stringent requirements. Requirements of New South Wales Regulations on Environmental Impact Statements (EIS) are described.

One of the main objectives while planning ventilation systems for mines with multiple fans is minimization of the total airpower consumption of the mine. Solution of this problem by conventional ventilation network analysis programs is tedious and time consuming, and may not yield optimum results in all the cases. The paper presents an algorithm for solving multiple fan networks by finding optimum combination of fan operating points for required airflow distribution in the ventilation system.

This paper is concerned with subsidence prediction methods and in particular with two techniques, one based on profile functions and the other on influence functions. Profile function methods provide a tool for a fast calculation of subsidence on a line across a mine panel. Influence function methods, on the other hand, allow for a more detailed calculation of ground movements, in any mode and at any depth, on a grid or at any specific point. In more detail, the hyperbolic tangent profile function, as developed by VPI&SU from field data pertaining to the eastern U.S. coalfields, and an influence function method currently being adapted for the same region, are presented and discussed. The applicability, advantages and limitations of these techniques are examined and comparisons are presented with field measurements. Computer software developed for the application of these prediction methods, for two widely used personal computer systems, are also discussed and a number of examples are presented demonstrating the potential of such programs.

The Zagros long tunnel is one of the main components of Sirvan water transfer project in western Iran. It is approximately 48 km in length and consisted of two lots. The second 26 km lot of this tunnel is under construction by a 6.73 m diameter double shield (DS) TBM. The tunnel passes through several formations with wide range rock mass qualities. During the tunnel alignment, changes in rock quality were highly frequent from poor to very good. The encountered geological conditions required TBM operation to change frequently from hard rock to soft, dry to flowing, sticky to nonsticky ground (and vice versa), more often than expected. In the course of tunneling, the machine has encountered nearly many adverse geologic conditions. The most important problems have been sudden high volume water inflow into the tunnel, sticky ground, and gas seepage, all of which resulted in reduced TBM advance rates. This study will high-light two difficult ground conditions including large water ingress and sticky ground and also the related problems encountered by the TBM along 8 km of excavated tunnel. In sticky grounds, cleaning of the clogged cutter head caused many delays and contributed to additional downtime. Application of some operational modifications, including decreased TBM thrust showed satisfactory results in such cases. While reduced thrust resulted in reduced penetration rate, but the overall TBM advance was greatly improved by the increase utilization rate and elimination of down time related to cleaning of the head. To cope with high water inflow, application of preventive measures such as pre-grouting has proved to be a more efficientsolution. The sealing of ground water inflow also decreased seepage of dangerous H2S gas and other chemicals such as hydrocarbons accompanying the groundwater.

Environmental conflict management approaches and procedures have been used to successfully address and resolve a variety of issues, problems, and conflicts related to the extraction of natural resources. Companies in the mining industry have been involved in a range of controversies over planning, siting, permitting, environmental, and enforcement issues. Through the use of conflict resolution case studies, this paper will present approaches and procedures that can help companies and other involved parties to successfully manage and resolve differences in a mutually acceptable manner.

In 1973, the United States production of marketable phosphate rock set a record in excess of 42 million tons. This production rate is expected to continue to increase, due to the growing international requirement for fertilizer, at a rate exceeding 5% per year well into 1977. This trend contrasts sharply with the reduced phosphate rock production levels of the 1966 - 1971 period. The natural consequence of this growing phosphate rock market is an evaluation of the variety of means whereby plant capacity can be most effectively increased. One approach toward increased plant production capacity is through large capacity flotation cells provided they can be successfully applied to the recovery of the relatively coarse product which is characteristic of the phosphate rock feed. This paper will summarize the results of a nine month evaluation test program, conducted at the Haynesworth Mine at Bradley, Florida in which the flotation circuit "specific capacity" (tons feed/ft.2 floor space) and "specific input power" (Hp/ton feed) were determined, and the feasibility of achieving economically acceptable concentrate grade and recovery levels was demonstrated, using large, high capacity, flotation cells.

Hilltop Interceptor Contract G is one of the segments of the wastewater control system in the greater Cleveland area. The tunnel is a relief interceptor constructed by the Northeast Ohio Regional Sewer District to minimize combined sewer overflows in the Easterly Service Area. The design study identified the need for a 3.35 m (132 in) diameter, 3.35 km (11,000 ft)in-line storage conveyance tunnel to be constructed at depths of 30 to 70 m (100 to 230 ft).Six structures for access, future flow drop, work shafts and overflow control were required to complete the system. The interceptor reduced the design peak flow from 12.5 m3/s(285 mgd) to 6.1 m3/s (140 mgd) by detaining in line 22,800 m3 (six million gallons) of wastewater.

This paper presents sulfur isotope data obtained for the deposits and country rocks of the Bailadores and Aroa Mining District, Venezuela. The study is a part of an extensive geochemical investigation of the mineralized belts that has as their aim the elucidation of the genesis of ores. The Bailadores deposits are located at about 600 Km. west-southwest of Caracas, or about 10 Km. southeast of the Town of Bailadores, Merida State (Fig. 1). The mine concession is held by the Ministry of Mines and Hydrocarbons (De Lima I, De Lima II and La Cascade areas). In a straight distance the mine is about 90 Km. southwest of Merida, the capital of Mérida State. From Mérida to Bailadores, through La Victoria and Tovar, it takes 3 hour by car. From Bailadores to the mine site it is about 40 minutes by jeep. The Aroa deposits are located at 4 Km. east of Aroa Village, Yaracuy State, about 220 Km. west of Caracas. It is 83 Km. from San Felipe, the capital of Yaracuy State to the mine (Fig.2). The mine is about 600 m above sea level, situated on the northern foot of the E-W trending Andes. The topography of the mine are shows a mature stage and is somewhat rugged. As the climate is warm and humid, the area is thicky covered with jungle.

The sulfur content of United States coal can be assessed by using a variety of approaches. The sulfur content may be expressed in terms of total sulfur in the coal, pounds of sulfur per million Btu, or sulfur remaining after reduction by coal preparation. In addition, the sulfur content may be applied to the demonstrated reserve base or to coal resource estimates. Unfortunately current data bases do not allow for an integrated assessment at the National level. Although classification of coal resources and reserves according to sulfur content is arbitrary, preferential production of low-sulfur reserves will positively skew the total sulfur of the remaining coal resource.
